Gala Grand Opening for Miami Lakes 7-Eleven convenience store Vol. 44, No 17

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff The long-awaited 7-Eleven store finally opened its doors August 17 at the corner of Miami Lakes Drive and Fairway Drive. New customers were greeted by tents from the Florida Lottery and the radio station Hits 97.3. Free Slurpees as well as complimentary Monster Energy drinks or Coca-Cola products were also given to event-goers. Mayor Manny Cid was also in attendance at the grand opening along with his two sons, who were also enjoying the Slurpees to beat the summer heat. “It was the largest grand opening that I’ve experienced, and actually I think it was the largest that we’ve had in Miami,” said district manager and field consultant for Miami-Dade 7Eleven stores, Edison Ingram. “We had one of the largest crowds, we had over 1,000 customers come in our store and make a purchase.” The new store has many firsts for a 7-Eleven in South Florida. In addition to an innovative

open ‘coffin-like’ freezer for ice cream, the store is the first in the area to have polished concrete floors, wood grain paneling and subway tiles to create a more modern look. A coffee bar is located next to the freezer with a variety of options including the traditional cup of joe and iced brews. “You won’t find another 7Eleven like this in Miami or anywhere in South Florida. It has the skylights for a more contemporary style. We’re also the first store in Miami with the company digital TV menu board. So come take a look at your beautiful 7-eleven!” chuckled Ingram. A new self-serve roller grill with hot dogs and taquitos has also been introduced to the store. Starting September 26, the store will also be launching a new way to order through their 7-Now App. Healthier options are also available in their ‘better for you’ sandwich case that offers healthier alternatives like salads or protein packs. The 7-Eleven will also be

making positive impacts to the community of Miami Lakes. “We do school programs as far as grants. We’re really big into academics and sports, so the store will be donating as we build relationships with schools. We’ve actually reached out to schools within a two or five mile radius of the store, we used to grant up to $711, but we changed that, and now we can grant up to $2,000,” explained Ingram. “We’re glad to be in the community, and we’re looking forward to a great partnership,” concluded Ingram.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes is once again flirting with the idea of borrowing money to complete the master plan for Miami Lakes Optimist Park, which has been delayed for 15 years, as the town’s pay-as-you-go plan is not working. Keeping the same rate for property taxes at 2.3353 mills, Miami Lakes released its esti-

mated $25 million budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, which earmarks $2 million for the park, leaving the town $2.5 million short to finish the muchneeded improvements. The $4.5 million price tag calls for building new basketball and tennis courts, an airnasium, walking and bike trails and replacing the park’s lighting system. Parks improvements impact

fees ($835,000), a portion of the town’s property tax revenues ($7.1 million), cell phone tower revenues ($30,000) and capitalization of electrical savings ($60,000) will fund the park’s improvements for next year. But Miami Lakes needs $2.5 million to try to win back residents whose kids play in parks and recreation facilities in Doral, Weston and Pembroke Pines since the town’s oldest park is not up to par. During a recent budget workshop, council members got an overview of the proposed spending plan, which calls for a mail-in ballot election to allow residents to decide if the town should take out a short term loan. Council members will make the decision on rather to send out the mail-in ballots during the town’s two budget hearings this month. Last year, Miami Lakes was planning to borrow money for the park but residents quickly shoot down the idea before

town officials could even ask them to do so. In the town’s pay-as-you-go plan for capital improvement projects, Miami Lakes Optimist Park, which was built in 1969, had to share $15.7 million with other parks and recreation facilities for the past 15 years. According to Town Manager Alex Rey, Royal Oaks Park and the Roberto Alonso Community Center got $7.2 million; $2.4 million for Miami Lakes Optimist Park; $1.8 million for Miami Lakes Park West; $1.5 million for Miami Lakes Park East and the town’s youth center; and $1.5 million for mini parks enhancements. Miami Lakes has decided to keep the existing rate for property taxes, which is expected to generate about $7.1 million in ad valorem revenues, and additional revenues are budgeted for the General Fund operating expenses of $17.7 million. The budget amount also includes a projection of revenues estimated at $4.8 million

from building permits for the new Senior Village and Assisted Living Facility; Lennar townhouses; Bob Graham/Elevate/ Crescent; and N.W. 57-59 Avenues development and $2.5 million in carryover funds from 2017-2018. The police budget increased five percent, as the town budgeted $8.7 million for public safety services, which is 49 percent of the spending plan for next year. For other capital improvement projects, Miami Lakes is projected to spend $3.8 million for stormwater drainage improvements including $1.9 million for the Third Phase of roads in West Lake (N.W. 148 Terrace/N.W. 148 Street/N.W. 149 Terrace; $1 million for Phase One of the Royal Oaks roadway and drainage project; and $837,000 for the second portion of the town’s canal bank stabilization. For transportation capital improvements, the town allocated $5 million for projects that include $2.3 million for N.W. 59 Avenue extension and boat storage yard; $1.1 million for Miami Lakes Business Park East (N.W. 60 Avenue); $685,000 for a safe routes to school project; and $441,747 for a project to widen the Palmetto Expressway and Ludlam Road. For public safety impact fees, Miami Lakes budgeted $430,597 for the town’s license plate recognition software, and a mobile speed radar. The license plate recognition software could help police track down vehicles that are suspected in a crime. Miami Lakes has an $800,000 budget surplus, and each year, reserves 10 percent of the budget for emergency expenditures including hurricane clears-up and recovery efforts. Miami Lakes held its first of two scheduled budget hearings on Tuesday, September 4. The second and final budget hearing will be held on Tuesday, September 18 at 6 p.m. at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street.

Miami Lakes Garden Club adopts Marian Center project By MaryLou Ruiz and Audrey Valhuerdi Special to The Miami Laker The Miami Lakes Garden Club adopted a community project this year at the Marian Center in Opa-Locka. The Marian Center offers services for people with intellectual disabilities, which includes a fullyaccredited school for students ages six to 21, an adult daytraining and work program as well as a full time residential facility for women. At the Marian Center, Garden Club members work with adults at the facility to plant vegetables, herbs or decorative plants. Work includes organizing a green house, planting a rock garden and replanting a butterfly garden. The focus of the project is to foster a respect for, and love of, gardening and nature among participants. Additionally, the project also provides the opportunity to put acquired knowl-

edge to work for Garden Club members who completed the National Garden Clubs’ Gardening Schools Course. All materials and plants for the project are either already on site, or are donated by the Garden Club members and friends from the community. Vegetable seedlings were kindly donated by Moses Kashem, who is a local organic farmer. As the rock garden neared completion, it became apparent that mulch was needed to prevent weed growth and enhance the beauty of the site. A helpful hand was extended from members of the Thunder and Lightning Motorcycle Club in the form of hardwood mulch. The project energizes Garden Club members, and is beneficial to residents of the The Marian Center, who have an opportunity to connect with the beautiful bounty of the horticulture of South Florida.

Humans of Miami Lakes: Virnalis Martinez-Arvelo THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Virnalis Martinez-Arvelo was born and raised in Miami Lakes and has been serving the community she loves in every way she can. Not only is Arvelo a dedicated wife and mother of two, but she is a hard-working teacher at Miami Lakes K-8 (MLK8) and vivacious instructor at Shula’s Athletic Club. For ten years, Arvelo has been an aerobics instructor and Zumba teacher at the Athletic Club. “I took my first Zumba class 12 years ago, and I discovered it was a fun way to help me get back in shape and lose weight. It just feels like you’re at a club,” Arvelo smiled. Zumba is a high-energy aerobic dance class Arvelo first started practicing when she began her weight-loss journey. On one fateful day, the Zumba instructor for a class she was attending had to use the bathroom, and left Arvelo alone to teach the class. It turned on a switch for Arvelo, and she discovered that her passion for the exercise didn’t just stop at being a dancer. “She (the instructor) knew that I knew the choreography, and she said ‘Go! Just do it, fol-

low her!’ and she just kind of put me on the spot. I loved it, and other instructors would do the same thing, and I developed a passion for it and everyone was just encouraging me to get certified,” explained Arvelo. However, believing she was still too over-weight to teach such an active class, she was proven wrong by the creator of Zumba, Beto Perez. Since then, Arvelo dedicated herself to teaching Zumba at the Athletic Club to not only lose weight and stay active, but to motivate others into doing the same. “They (the community) tell me I inspire them because they can identify with me and my journey. But what they don’t realize is that they inspire me to keep going on my journey,” Arvelo said. For eight years, Arvelo has also been teaching at MLK8. Not only does she specialize in teaching eighth grade language arts, but she also spearheaded the first Zumba elective in the school. Separate from the typical physical education course, Zumba is an elective taught at the very end of the day. “I’ve done it before as a club after school, I’ve also done it for the teachers as well. But just

getting it as part of the actual school day is what makes it so exciting, because kids actually look forward to this class where it’s just fun, but it’s the last period of the day, so they can dress out and leave all nice and sweaty when the bell rings,” Arvelo laughed. “It’s a nice alternative for kids who don’t like P.E. or don’t like sports. For the most part, it gives them a nice opportunity to do something different.” In addition to keeping the Miami Lakes community in shape, Arvelo also dedicates her time to four charity events a year. The Zumba community alone has raised thousands of dollars at Zumbathons for organizations like American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Toys for Tots, Big Brothers Big Sister and more. Arvelo says her passion for the exercise wouldn’t have flourished if it wasn’t for her supportive family. Her high school sweetheart and husband, Angel Arvelo, helps with the kids after school alongside Arvelo’s mother. “He’s been so supportive. He’s loved me at 300 pounds, and he loves me now, and he just supports me in everything

My mom helps as well because she lives with us, so it’s the three of us chauffeuring the kids around because they’re in so many after school activities, so if I didn’t have them I wouldn’t be able to do this.” Arvelo teaches Zumba at Shula’s Athletic Club Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m. On October 6, Arvelo will conduct

If elected Diaz, Mingo propose blasting legislation THE MIAMI LAKER

State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. (R-Miami), and Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Frank Mingo have announced that if elected in November to the State Senate and House, the first piece of legislation both members would file in their respective chambers will be to address the rock mining blasting near Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North, Miramar and Southwest Ranches in Broward County. While serving in the Florida House, Diaz and State Senator Rene Garcia (R-Hialeah) secured funds with the help of Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis to conduct a blasting

study with the purpose to reduce the blasting intensity and frequency move blasting zones further from residential areas, and require compensation for citizens for blasting damage. The study has been completed. The Legislative Task Force will review the findings of the study, and help craft legislation. “Balancing our residents’ quality of life with the need for concrete production is an important issue that must be addressed at the state level, and I plan to hit the ground running to do so,” said Diaz, who is running for Senate District 36, which includes part of Miami-

Our residents deserve relief and I am committed to ensuring our property structure and values remain unharmed.” “Manny has my full support in the Senate to propose legislation that will address this issue,” said Senate Presidentdesignate Bill Galvano (RBradenton). “He has shared with me the effects the blasting has caused in his community, while also relaying the importance of having available concrete for the needs of our state. “I look forward to working with him on this issue during the legislative session and have asked him to take the lead on this issue when he is elected to the Florida Senate.” “Working together is crucial to bringing change and solution,” said House Speaker-designate Jose Oliva (R-Hialeah). “I, too, have asked Frank

Miami Lakes Garden Club hosts the ‘Edible Gardening Gal’ on Sept. 24

The Miami Lakes Garden Club invites residents of the town to a presentation given by Karin Fields, an urban gardening specialist. Before she became ‘the Edible Gardening Gal’ and an urban farming guru, Fields was a professional singer. The singing career left her with a lot of free time during the daylight hours, which lead to her passion for gardening and growing food. The passion was so strong, that she decided to drop singing professionally to focus on teaching people, improving the world and making a difference.

These days, Fields is living that dream, giving frequent public and private lectures on the basics of home and urban gardening. The season is almost here, so to get a good solid start, the Miami Lakes Garden Club has invited ‘the Edible Gardening Gal’ herself to speak at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue, on September 24, at 7 p.m. Admission is free to the general public, and all guests will receive a packet of gardening information.

Town Manager candidates narrowed to 5, 2 alternates

THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff A group of city managers, assistant city managers and former top city administrators were among the candidates interviewed for the town manager’s position for Miami Lakes, as a selection committee narrowed its picks down to five finalists and two alternates. Ana Garcia, city manager for the City of North Miami Beach; Howard Brown, a city manager for Bell City, California; Juan Jimenez, an assistant town manager for Bay Harbor Islands; Miami Lakes resident and veteran firefighter Edward Pidermann; and Miami Lakes’ Chief Financial Officer Ismael Diaz made the final cut. Wilmington, North Carolina interim City Manager John Bauer, and PGA West (California) General Manager Scott Randall were named alternates should any of the finalists drop out the running. The Town Council will interview the final cut of candidates sometime this year to determine the best person for the job. The Miami Lakes Selection Committee initially picked 17 candidates for the job but five of them withdrew their candidacy, leaving 12 job seekers to appear before the group during two days of interviews last week in person or via Skype. Garcia is the front-runner for the job, as the committee gave her the highest score on their score cards. During her interview, Garcia said she’s a good fit to manage

the 6.5 square-mile town, alluding to her achievements for the northeast city with a population of 45,000 residents and managing a $165 million budget. Brown was a former acting city manager for Opa-locka. In Bell City, he manages a $32 million budget and oversees more than 150 employees while serving 50,000 residents. In Bay Harbor Island, Jimenez, who has over 16 years of government experience, assists the town manger in overseeing the day-to-day operations of a government with 90 employees with a $23 million budget. A Miami Lakes resident, Diaz has been Miami Lakes’ chief financial officer for three years. His duties include supervising accounting practices, finance, investment program, risk management, bonds, payroll, FRS, cost recovery, financial reporting, special taxing districts and interaction with procurement operations. Pidermann, who worked in every operational division of the City of Miami Fire-Rescue Department during a 30-plus career, said he loves his hometown and wants to be the town manager. “This is not a stepping stone for another job, he said. “This would be my final job. Bauer said his 40 years of government experience would include learning the town’s challenges and immediately tackle them head on. Randall currently oversees a 3,000 household, gated golfing community.

Shula’s Steakhouse is named Team of the Year by Culinaire THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Shula’s Steakhouse was recently voted Team of the Year by Culinaire, an international food and beverage management company. General manager Anthony Rine and his team were honored with the award, as the 30 year anniversary of Shula’s Steakhouse draws near. “It’s been a pleasure, I have so many locals that are regulars that have helped contribute to what we are, and make us what we are,” explained Rine. “I definitely want to thank everyone in the community for making us who we are.” In addition to the anniversary, it’s also the first time the restaurant won the award. Thanks to beating the budget, increased sales, social media success and a low turnover rate, it made the steak house the perfect candidate for the award. With servers working at the restaurant for over 20 years, the steak house is not just a team, but a family.

We Stand Corrected

Miami Lakes resident Abel Fernandez noted he was misquoted about comments he made at a recent Town Council meeting. To correct the accounting, Fernandez stated that he had checked all the council members and none of them had taken monies from the miners. Furthermore, Fernandez stated that politicians in Tallahassee had received monies from the mining companies. We want to clarify any misunderstandings that were created. In the August 17 issue, captions for pictures of Town Council candidates were incorrect. The proper names for two of the candidates are Xiomara Pazos and Carlos Alvarez. A story reporting the appointment of Roberto Alonso Jr. to the Miami-Dade Planning and Zoning Board contained inaccurate information. Alonso, and his wife, Alexandra, are the owners of Always At Your Side Adult Day Care in Miami Lakes.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Monsignor Edward Pace High baseball coach Tom Duffin was named Florida Dairy Farmers 5A Coach of the Year after leading the Spartans to their seventh state championship last season. Enroute to the championship, Pace won 14 consecutive games and beat Jacksonville Bolles, 10-4, for the state title, avenging

a 2016 final loss and preventing Bolles from winning a third straight crown. Duffin was named the Miami Herald’s 6A-2A Coach of the Year in 2016. Pace calls him a true legacy to the Spartans athletic program for 23 years. Since 1992, the Florida Diary Farmers High School Sports

Awards program, which recognizes all 30-FHSAA-sanctioned and recognized sports, has honored more than 5,000 of the state’s top student-athletes and coaches. Past winners have gone on to star at the collegiate and professional levels, and some have even represented their country in the Olympic Games.

St. Thomas University launches football and marching band teams THE MIAMI LAKER

By Marlen Mursuli Special to The Miami Laker History was made last week at St. Thomas University (STU) as the school is launching a football team and marching band for the first time ever. South Florida's newest football team, the St. Thomas Bobcats, wil begin practice in Spring 2019, while building the capacity to play a full season beginning in Fall 2019. The addition of the football team will be the 15th sports program at the school, which competes in the NAIA. “We are coming off a very successful season in STU Athletics history, and I feel the addition of football is the next natural step for our athletics program, said STU president David A. Armstrong. “Football is more than a game. Football has taught me some of the most important lessons in my life – hard work, discipline, a positive attitud – which all lead to great team work and success. Those are all the things that can be taught and learned through programs like football and marching band. And all these things are things this country needs today. By adding football and marching band, STU hopes to add upwards of 20 students for foot-

The Bobcats, full-time members of The Sun Conference, will compete in the Mid-South Conference in football in The Sun Division. Eric Ward, commissioner of the Mid-South Conference, said he was honored and excited to have St. Thomas University join as the eighth football member in the Sun Division. “Not only will we increase our number to 23 teams in 2019, but

will also add to the overall quality of the schools in the conference, said Ward. “We expect that the STU Bobcats will be competitive quickly in the Sun Division, adding to the overall strength of schedule across the conference. Congratulations to President Armstrong and the university on their unanimous and enthusiastic acceptance by our Council of Presidents. Athletic director and STU alumnae, Laura Courtley-Todd, who has been with STU for 22 years, echoed the excitement on campus about football. “Adding football is a tremendous opportunity for South Florida high school students who want to continue playing football and stay close to home, said Courtley-Todd.

Last season, Largie bounced back from a leg injury and averaged 20 points, six rebounds and four assists per game, leading the Bears to the postseason. The highlight of the Bears’ season came when he scored 25 points and 15 rebounds against top-ranked Suncoast High, as the Bears rallied from a 15 point deficit to win 88-85. FIU volleyball teams recognized with Academic Team Award

Florida International University’s indoor and beach volleyball teams have been recognized with the 2017-18 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The indoor program was among 164 teams recognized, while the beach volleyball program is one of just 23 honored. The indoor team posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.34, for the year. Beach volleyball logged a grade point average of 3.56. “I am so proud of my teams for their academic accomplishments,” said Rita BuckCrockett, head coach of both programs. “This is an honor that is as demanding as competing in a championship. These ladies are continuously demonstrating that they are champions in life, as well as in the sports.” The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team gradepoint average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. This season, the beach volleyball program posted a 23-12 record, and a 7-3 mark in Coastal Collegiate Sports Association play, advancing to their first-ever NCAA Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Miami Lakes Educational Center acknowledges senior class as ‘Royalty’ By Luis Mila Special to The Miami Laker The Senior Class is royalty at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). After years of hard work and dedication, the upperclassmen don their crowns on the first day of school, signaling that this is their year. Upperclassmen plan and decorate their gear, often planning to coordinate with their friends. They mark the occasion with pomp, circumstance and the obligatory selfie on the senior throne. These crowns represent three stressful years, filled with laborious work, the sacrifice of a social life, summer programs and an infinite collection of memories created on campus. It’s a sign that ‘senioritis’ is about to strike, and that public

schooling has met its end. It may seem odd, but wearing the headgear seems to bring out a feeling of unison and a sense of family among the seniors who realize that this is it, their final year. “It’s always fun to see these once nervous and scared freshmen become confident young men and women, poised to take on the world, preparing to head off to college and the career world,” said John Moffi, student government sponsor and Social Studies department chair. “That really is what it’s all about, claiming the power to become the masters of their fate,” he added. It won’t be long before these crowns and senior sashes are replaced with graduation caps and gowns.

New Goleman principal is well known locally THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGSHS) recently welcomed Dr. Manuel Sanchez III as the new principal. Sanchez has 24 years of experience in education, with 12 of those years being in administration. He’s worked in Miami Lakes as well as surrounding areas. Most notably, he was principal at Miami Lakes Middle School and Palm Springs North Elementary School. He was also an assistant principal at Carol City Middle School and teacher at Miami Park Elementary School. “I taught students that were labelled severely or emotionally disturbed. It was fourth and fifth grade, and I taught math and science to those students,” Sanchez said. “It was awesome. It was tough, but very rewarding. Some of them are doing great, and one of them is actually working at the Publix here in Miami Lakes.” In addition to earning his doctorate degree at Barry University for special education with an area of concentration in leadership, Sanchez has received many honors and awards. In 2016, Sanchez was awarded Principal of the Year in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He was also Assistant Principal of the Year for middle school the same year his school was ranked the number one

middle school in Miami-Dade, and number one, Title One middle school in the state of Florida. He was named educator of the year, and has even earned a proclamation from the town of Miami Lakes. Starting from elementary school, Sanchez has experienced what student life is like every step of the way until middle school. Being administrator at BGSHS is his first time seeing students at a high school level. “I think the coolest thing is, I’ve been there from the beginning, I’ve been there for the middle, and now I kind of want to see the end. Certain kids we have here we’ve had since elementary school, they kind of followed me. It’s a neat thing,” Sanchez commented. With the new school year that began August 20, Sanchez already has big plans for the high school. In addition to growing their magnet program, Sanchez is also enforcing uniforms for students, opening the school library, adding security measures for student safety and adding more activities and events. Dual enrollment will also be modified. Instead of students going off campus for their college courses, Sanchez plans on teachers earning credentials to become professors for local universities, so students can stay in Miami Lakes and still earn college credits.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools unveiled new menu items for students starting school in the 2018-2019 school year. Although M-DCPS always offers vegetarian and vegan items, the menu has been

expanded to offer more variety. New options include plantbased vegan chili, cilantro and chipotle brown rice and more. Using locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, M-DCPS will still be offering free breakfast for students.

“I want to grow the magnet program and the school. I want to be state-of-the art in academics as well as activities. We get the best of both worlds,” he laughed as he hummed Hannah Montana’s hit song, ‘Best of Both Worlds.’ With all the years of experience under his belt however, one thing remains constant for Sanchez – first-day-of-school jitters. “I look forward to that first day of school. Seeing all the kids, and just sitting in the cafeteria, walking and meeting everyone. I looked forward to that,” remarked Sanchez. “When those kids come in, you don’t sleep on Sunday, because no matter how many years you do it, you’re nervous and anxious. It’s like the first day of school when you were a kid. It’s even more heightened because it’s a new school for me. MLEC’s junior class leaves their ‘PawPrint’ - a Jaguar tradition

By Sarah Lemos Special to The Miami Laker High school is only four years long, but it is monumental. The lessons learned, both in and out of the classroom, leave an imprint. In the case of Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) Jaguars, a paw print. Each year, the junior class solidifies its status as upperclassmen by the mark that the class will leave on the school. They celebrate this by designing and creating a paw that will hang on the wall of the main cafeteria. The class of 2020 revealed their mark during lunch on August 24. “I loved it,” said Genesis Perez, science teacher and the MLEC juniors of the class of 2020 posing with their mural. junior class sponsor, “Especially the scratches and the art work within the scratches. I love the details and all the artwork they put into it. It was a beautiful creative way of expressing themselves.” The class hoped to unveil a distinct design that would not only make them stand out, but also represent their class by presenting how they see themselves and how others perceive them as well. “We talked to the artists, and they had some ideas so all the officers and the artists came to an agreement. As the design came to be, we continued to make adjustments here and there,” said Natalia Reboredo, president of the class of 2020. “The scratches were something unique. The scratches are like looking into the future. The UFOs and the movie references of films that look into the future. There’s a billboard saying ‘taking the throne’ and that happened because we wanted something funny as well, and purple means royalty so it all went together.” The class of 2020 just became upperclassmen and they are wasting no time writing and designing their narrative.

This love of American politics was so strong, that it inspired him to dedicate his university senior thesis to the evolution of the Democratic and Republican parties' socioculturaland economic rhetoric at presidential nominating conventions from 1956-2016. Fernández says he owes much of that to the foundation he received during his high school years. “I know that Pace played an important role not only in getting me there (to Princeton,) but also in helping me thrive. By providing me with invaluable leadership skills, teaching me to truly love learning and strengthening my faith in God's grace and truth." Following graduation, Fernández returned back to South Florida. He has been actively working with various political campaigns for the recent midterm primary elections as well as for the upcoming general elections in November.

American and HML Adult Education Centers hold joint graduation ceremonies

American and Hialeah-Miami Lakes Adult Education centers recently celebrated their accomplishments during a graduation ceremony, where Miami-Dade County School Board Chair Perla Tabares-Hantman and Assistant Superintendent for School Operations Luis Diaz showed their admiration and support for the graduates. The centers also offer educational opportunities for students from American, Goleman, Carol City, Norland, Jose Marti MAST and 14 other locations serving senior learners and adults with disabilities across Hialeah and Miami Lakes. Some of the graduating students that evening were the Success Management Academy (SMA) students from HML Adult Education Center and Jose Martinez MAST SMA. The group represents a pro-

gram of choice for immigrants between the ages of 16-18. The students receive intensive English classes and preparation to earn their high school equivalency diploma. In addition, the SMA program provides them with career pathway orientations preparing them for transition to higher education as well as assimilation and acculturation to this country. Hantman is a strong support of educational opportunities for all students and has always been receptive to new programs that will assist in furthering accessibility of these opportunities. Dr. David Bennett, a dentist and Miami Lakes community activist, was the keynote speaker for the graduation ceremony, and he offered scholarships to four SMA graduates.

Miami-Dade Public Schools offers new programs and initiatives for 2018-2019 Miami-Dade County Public schools (M-DCPS) started the 2018-2019 school year with 90 programs and initiatives that builds on M-DCPS’s goals on providing classrooms with innovation, academic rigor and expanded student access. Over 60 programs were created or strengthened for the new school year. Local schools like American Senior high and Hialeah Gardens Senior High will be participating in course embedded virtual reality programs. Additionally, Lawton Chiles Middle School will take part in Project Lead The Way, a computer science-based learning approach. Thirty new initiatives have also been introduced for the benefit of students, parents, administration and teachers. M-DCPSafe is one of those initiatives launching in the fall. As part of the initiative, law enforcement will be present at every school, thanks to partner-

ships with Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. Additionally, the program will adhere to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. Other initiatives have been created to ensure child safety, such as the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Police Command Center and Vigilant Schools, a program that will increase school security and safeguards. Academic initiatives will include a Paid Academic Year Internship Program, SAT School Day, Pre-AP, iBot and more. Programs have also been created to benefit student mental health and social issues, such as “Don’t Stall, Just Call,” Be The Change, E(liminate)-Cigs Awareness Campaign and Single-Gender Educational Environments. Spanish Lake Elementary staff welcomes students on first day PAGE 28

SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

Spanish Lakes Elementary (SLE) is staying true to this year’s slogan of ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ with an "A" ranking, and continued learning gains for the 2018-19 school year. SLE emphasizes their two choice programs. Programs include Biso and Cambridge. Cambridge enhances the cur-

riculum to develop critical thinking skills and foster collaboration for students to meet global expectations. The initiative Biso provides language instruction for students to become bilingual and biliterate individuals. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's initiatives this year focus on safety and increasing

culture as well as academics, and the administration of SLE is focusing on each one. Safety is a priority at SLE, specifically when it comes to the uniform policy, which requires a current ID worn by each employee. Visitors must also pass through a single entrance Raptor system, with new dismissal systems in place as well. In SLE'S first year of seeking STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) designation, the school was awarded the silver designation. Additionally, SLE went up 10 points on the FSA (Florida Standards Assessments) science test. This year, SLE plans on going for the gold designation.

North Palm Baptist hosts ‘Jews for Jesus’ on Sept. 16

North Palm Baptist Church invites the community of Miami Lakes to hear a presentation given by Jews for Jesus on Sunday, September 16 at 10:30 a.m at 7801 N.W. 178 Street. The topic will be “Gospel in the feasts of Israel.” Jews for Jesus is an agency that proclaims that Jesus is the messiah of Israel and savior of the world. The late Dr. Moishe Rosen, a Jew who has believed in Jesus for over 35 years, founded the organization. However, Rosen was quick to point out that Jews for Jesus did not start with him. "Jews for Jesus began about 2,000 years ago, around 32 C.E., give or take a year. Jesus'

first disciples were Jewish, and there have been some Jewish people who have believed in him ever since,” Rosen said. To the group, believing in Jesus makes sense in light of the Jewish Bible, the Torah, and in light of their experiences as "believers." For those who argue that Christianity contradicts the meaning of Judaism, the Jews for Jesus say there are answers, which their representative will be happy to discuss after the presentation. Admission is free. For more information call (305) 558-2032 or visit www.northpalm baptist.org.
