Flood mitigation is a priority of the Town of Miami Lakes and is included in the Town’s Stormwater Master Plan and Strategic Plan. To mitigate localized flooding, the Town submitted a proposal to the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FEMA) under the FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant Program for the West Lakes Drainage Improvements Project. The Town was awarded full funding of over $1.462 million. The FMA program provides resources to assist government agencies in their efforts to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage insurable under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA selected the highest ranked eligible proposals and applicants which benefited communities with high participation and favorable standing in the NFIP. The Town’s award-winning proposal required multiple lev-

els of agency coordination, including the Miami-Dade County (MDC) Office of Emergency Management, MDC Archaeologist, MDC Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, Florida Department of Transportation, US Army Corps of Engineers, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service South Florida Ecological Services Field Office. The grant award was announced by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio who helped secure the funding which would reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage in an area where 236 homes would be spared from flooding. Town officials expressed appreciation to the efforts of Town staff including Public Works director Carlos Acosta; Carmen Olazabel, chief of CIP and Special Services; Lourdes M. Rodriguez, Building and Zoning manager; and Renée N. Wilson, Grants administrator, FLORIDA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE Gwen Graham took time out from her “Welcome who all worked diligently on the Home” event at Picnic Park West to visit with students from the Bob Graham Education proposal. THE MIAMI LAKER

While most kids are on summer break from school, the students from the Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) spend their summer reading, researching and meet-

ing with their teachers to prepare for the upcoming school year. Their most recent meeting was on July 25 at the Mary Collins Community Center. As he has done on several occa-

Future Force Personnel Services (Future Force), located in the Miami Lakes Commerce Center at 15800 N.W. 57 Avenue, recently earned the Safety Standard of Excellence Mark. The Safety Standard of Excellence program, developed by the American Staffing Association and the National Safety Council, promotes staffing industry-wide safety standards through a uniform national program. Participants access resources and tools to assist in preparing for on-site visits and assessments by program consultants, as well as best practice resources for ongoing improvement.

Since Future Force first opened its doors in 1992, the company has made a commitment to keep employee safety a priority. Future Force has worked very hard with clients, candidates and dedicated staff to provide the proper training and to ensure that the necessary safety standards are implemented and adhered to at every level. The collective of Future Force is very proud and honored to have earned this award, and will continue to build on the principles that made this recognition possible. sions in the past, Senator Bob Graham surprised the students and spoke with them about the work they are doing in the CEA. Graham enjoys meeting with the students, as he takes great joy in seeing civic education taught in an interactive manner. He provided an overview of his experience in government and congratulated the students for their efforts in understanding the government better and encouraged them to continue learning and staying engaged. “As aways, Senator Graham is so gracious with his time with these students. His insights pro-

vide them with an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience, and to hear it directly from the namesake of their school is amazing,” said Ramiro Inguanzo, a parent of three students in the CEA. After their meeting, several students walked to the nearby Picnic Park West where candidate for Florida Governor Gwen Graham, Bob Graham’s daughter, was meeting with local residents during a “Grilling with the Grahams” event where they could ask questions about issues impacting the State. Just as gracious with her time

as her father, Graham spoke with the students and shared with them her thoughts on various important issues. The CEA has won many local, state and national competitions over the past few years. Most recently, the incoming eighth grade students participated in the 2018 Project Citizen Showcase, where they came in first place, and the incoming seventh graders and the incoming sixth graders each won second place in their respective Miami-Dade County district competitions.

Residents pack Town Hall with blasting concerns PAGE 4

AUGUST 3, 2018

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff In 2000, the state stripped Miami-Dade County of its power to regulate the rock mining industry’s blasting near Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North, Miramar and Southwest Ranches in Broward County. As a result, city officials and residents felt helpless as the blasting allegedly caused years of damages to their homes, driveways and swimming pools, even after turning to the state’s Fire Marshall Office, which regulates and monitors blasting, for help. But while Florida is putting the finishing touches on a new study to try to resolve the problem, Miami Lakes residents learned about a county resolution which allows Miami-Dade and local cities affected by the explosions to take some action. At the July 17 Miami Lakes Town Council Meeting, residents packed Town Hall and called out council members for knowing about the resolution but instead blamed the state for allowing the rock miners to blast at higher rates with seismic consequences. “We have been lied to,” one resident said, who spent thousands of dollars for repairs to her home. According to the county’s resolution, which was sponsored by Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. in 2016, the Miami-Dade County mayor was directed to order the study on the effects caused by the

THE MIAMI LAKER

blasts, revising the timeframe for the requirement that a portion of the Miami-Dade County Lake Belt Mitigation Plan fees be used for the analysis. The resolution also called for the county to review mining activities and claims relating to blasting and include a review of the effects of the statewide ground vibration limit for construction material mining activities. If the explosions violate state regulations, Miami-Dade must notify state legislators and demand the rock miners be sanctioned. But the state places the cap on the strength of the rock miners’ blasts. According to the county, Bovo’s resolution was an urging in support of two proposed Legislature bills that would have provided for the study, however, both bills died and no further action was taken. For local action, State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., created a local blasting task force which includes Miami Lakes residents Josh Dieguez, Albert Aquiar and Daissys Estrada, Country Club of Miami Community Councilman Alex Rizo, Palm Springs North resident Mercy Sierra and Miramar resident Kate Tobon. The group will scrutinize the results of the state’s blasting study, which is scheduled to be finished by next month. On the other side of the spectrum, the rock miners argued they are blasting within state

regulations, and the fact the mines were there in West Miami-Dade before the nearby homes were built. The industry said some mine owners complained that the housing developments are encroaching on them, rather than vice versa. But the long-running blasting dispute that pits homeowners against the rock miners took a different turn when residents accused council members of overlooking the county’s resolution and alluded to the rock miners contributions to their political campaigns. “I ask you to take action despite taking money from the rock miners,” said Abel Fernandez, a retied firefighter. “Our homes are damaged and the blasts are affecting our kids in school who are distracted by the blasting. You have the ability and connections to take action.” Claudia Luces said council members should focus on residents’ pockets instead of the rock miners’ donations. “Taking about the quality of life, but let’s talk about something more important, and that is our four walls,” she said. “Residents’ homes are being destroyed and it costs a lot of money for repairs. Let’s be proactive about this. These are our homes.” Council members indicated they were unaware of the resolution but targeted the best source to address the problem, which is the state’s Chief Financial Officer Jim Patronis,

who paid a visit last year to survey the damages. Mayor Manny Cid, who has been affected by blasting since he was 8-years-old, said after the county’s efforts over the years and homeowners’ lawsuits failed, Miami Lakes took the fight to Tallahassee. He said it’s an uphill battle to mitigate the blasting, especially since the explosions create materials to build roads, parking lots and buildings for federal and state governments. “It was time for a change and we went to Tallahassee and talked to the governor and our state representative,” Cid said. “And look what we got done? It’s the first time in 20 years we got the first study on blasting done. We are with you. When the study comes out, we will look at the results and ask questions and keep fighting until we get something done.” Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a firefighter who’s also affected by the blasting, said the town can’t take the action it wants to regulate the explosions under the county’s resolution. “If there was something we can do, we would be ahead of the game,” said Rodriguez, whose pool and driveway have cracks. “It’s time to show strength in numbers and go to Tallahassee.” Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, who’s running for state representative, fought off an attack which accused him of accepting campaign contributions from rock miners’ lobbyists.

“I have lived in Miami Lakes since 1986 and my house has cracks,” he said. “I’m committed to do something about the blasting. I will make it work, you have my word.” Councilmember Ceasar Mestre said the town accomplished a lot in Tallahassee and believes the issue will finally get resolved. “Myself and Councilmember Tim Daubert sat up here for eight years, the longest on the council, and we sat in the conference room with the CFO and told him our concerns about the blasting issue,” he said. “We sat there and held his foot to the fire. Look how far we have gotten?” In other Council actions: • Council members approved a resolution to tentatively keep the same rate for property taxes, 2.3353 mills, for the next fiscal year. The proposed rate is projected to generate at least $7.1 million in tax revenues. But the town may have lose about $350,000 if voters approve the additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption in November. However, a possible increase in property values may offset the lost of property tax revenues. Lawmakers will vote on a final tax rate and budget during two budget hearings scheduled for Tuesday, September 4 at 5:05 p.m. and Tuesday, September 18 at 6 p.m. at Miami Lakes Town Hall.

AUGUST 3, 2018

MSP’s Five Women Wearing the Same Dress By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Main Street Players (MSP) located at 6766 Main Street, presents Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, running from now until August 12. The play is set in the bright pink childhood bedroom of Meredith, played by Lorena Estevez. It’s Meredith’s big sister’s wedding day, and she’s feeling suffocated from the festivities unfolding just outside her bedroom window. She barges in her room, frantically taking off her leather jacket that hides a hideous bridesmaid dress. Unbeknownst to her, Frances (played by Icela Marliese) is hiding under the bed, when just seconds before she was strolling around the bedroom, humming “Going to the Chapel of Love” by the Dixie Cups and daydreaming about what her big day might be like. They’re soon joined by Trisha, (played by Amanda-Lynn Williams) a seemingly put-together 30something with trust issues and a colorful past. Played by Thiana Berrick, Georgeanne stumbles through

the door, screaming obscenities at the ex-love-of-her-life, who probably didn’t hear a word she said. The groom’s sister, Mindy (played by Rei Capote) randomly walks in the room at one point, clinging to a plate-full of hors d’oeuvres, at the most inopportune moment. Tripp (played by Kevin Rubi) chimes in towards the end of the play, convincing Trisha to join him in a last-minute attempt to ditch the reception and have a “romantic” evening together. They all stay in the bedroom, mocking the seemingly perfectness of the couple getting married just a floor below them. Although each woman has their own personality, they all had the same disgust for the man Georgeanne was yelling at a moment before. Not only does this play tug on audience’s heart strings, but the laugh-out-loud dramedy gives a glimpse to what women really talk about behind closed doors. Authentic and charming, this play will make audiences feel like they’re there with the characters, donning the same gaudy dress.

Showtimes are on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students, seniors and military per-

sonnel. Theatre League members/Industry $20 with I.D. presented at door. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.mainstreetplayers.com, or

Remedy’s Nutrition to open in Cypress Village Shopping Ctr. PAGE 8

AUGUST 3, 2018

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff It’s so recurrent. If there’s a medication for one thing, it can start a chain reaction that will cause something else that wasn’t there before. A medication that can solve a headache may cause nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and stomach problems. But, at least there’s no more headache. Remedy’s Nutrition’s solution is a holistic approach to everyday ailments. If customers experience frequent headaches, there’s a vitamin for that. Trouble sleeping? There’s an oil for that. The benefits include no side effects, and no harsh chemicals or substances. “Holistic medicine is a branch of medicine that entitles and encompasses your whole body. What we try to do is place natural substances in your body and focus in on what’s wrong to make yourself complete,” explained Tony Mendez, owner of Remedy’s Nutrition in Miami Lakes. Remedy’s first began in Key Largo. Mendez was a pharmacist at the time, and decided to stop by the store. There, he met his future business partner Gene Lentz, a nutritionist. The rest is history, and since then Lentz and Mendez have planned to open stores around South Florida. With a new store opening up in Miami Lakes, they plan on expanding to Doral, Key West and eventually

Weston. “I’m going backwards, because as a pharmacist I’ve been doing this my whole life. We saw this company in the Keys, and I was looking at them and I said ‘wow, this stuff really works.’ We tried it and it works. I started thinking about it and the older you get, you want to start going natural,” explained Mendez. Miami Lakes was the first place that popped into Mendez’s mind when deciding on a new location. For 30 years, Mendez lived and worked in Miami Lakes, and he plans to continue serving the community that he’s been a part of for so long. After a trip to Italy, Mendez and his wife had a neardeath experience at a car wreck in Venice. Mendez recalled that it put into perspective what he does, and says it has inspired him to help the community more so. “I had a young lady that was hooked on Zanax, and she really wanted to get off it so I gave her some CBD oil, and she started with that, and she’s gotten off two of her meds,” said Mendez. “No more controlled substances. That’s the focus I

want to take, I want to help the people that have, I don’t want to say ‘addictions,’ but it’s so common place to use hard drugs to go to sleep, but you can take natural stuff and not wake up with a hangover.” That young lady was Grace Rodriguez, and besides her addiction to the sedative, she was also suffering from a pulmonary embolism that almost lead to her death back in March. With the help of Mendez, she was able to stop her suffering without the use of controlled substances. Doctors had told her it would take a year to go back to normal, but she bounced back in just a couple of months. “It really has worked for me,” Rodriguez said. “I went from zero to 60 as far as improvement.” Remedy’s Nutrition in Miami Lakes is located in the Cypress Village Shopping Center at 7331 Miami Lakes Drive. For more information, call (305)400-8920 or visit their website at www.remedysnutrition.com. “You go to Remedy’s to get your remedy,” Mendez chuckled.

At request of Miami-Dade Public School Board, a referendum for a tax hike to cover teacher raises will be on November ballot After recognizing that the Miami-Dade County Public School system is an A-rated school district for the first time and students are performing above the state’s rate, County Commissioners approved a resolution to propose a property tax increase on November’s ballot asking voters to give teachers a pay raise and increase school safety. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and the School Board requested the proposal on the ballot, which, if approved, homeowners would pay an additional 75 cents per thousand dollars of their taxable value to pay for higher teachers’ salaries from 2019 to 2023. The special tax would also pay for additional school resource officers at each school in Miami-Dade County following the Stoneman Douglas High massacre which took the lives of 17 students and teachers. County Commissioner Barbara Jordan, who requested the ballot measure for November 6,

said taxpayers would decide teachers’ fate on increasing their pay. “This will give Miami-Dade voters the opportunity to decide whether to tax themselves more to pay for teacher salary increases and increased safety,” she said at a recent County Commission meeting. Carvalho went before county commissioners to lobby them to approve the ballot proposal, mentioning an A-rated school district with no F schools, the highest graduation rates in history and students outperforming above the state’s rate, as the reasons teachers deserve a pay hike. Adding to the School Board’s plans to increase security through the proposed tax increase, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s proposed budget for 2018-2019, allocated $20 million to assign a police officer at more than 100 MiamiDade public schools, and funding new response teams and additional training for officers.

Veterans Committee will host a Jingle Bell Jog on December 1

Though Nayib Hassan has never served in the U.S. military, he said America can do more to honor soldiers and veterans for putting their lives on the line each day for their country. After running in the Boston Marathon this year, the Miami Lakes resident broached an idea which allows residents to show their appreciation for soldiers stationed abroad and bring economic development to Miami Lakes as well. Hassan, chairman of the Miami Lakes Veterans Committee, is spearheading Miami Lakes Jingle Bell Jog, an 5K event which is scheduled for Saturday, December 1. The five-hour race and walk commences at 7:30 a.m., starting at Main Street and N.W. 67 Avenue, running through the Don Shula Golf Course and ending near Victoria’s Secrets at New Barn Road and Main Street. All participants will receive a Santa costume and finishers will be treated with a Holidaythemed medal. event is the signature recognition for veterans and soldiers who protect “our” country. “I can’t believe we don’t give enough thanks to the people who are giving their lives for this country,” he said. “These people fight for our liberty and freedom. I appreciate the military every single day.” Hassan, an attorney, said the Jingle Bell Jog is similar to the now defunct Jingle Down Main Street, which was hosted by the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce years ago. He said SplitSecond Timing agreed to host the event for the next three years. Hassan said the proceeds from Jingle Bell Jog will benefit Veterans causes, including treatment of PTSD, and sending out care packages to the military abroad. “Our residents will get the opportunity to draft letters to our military thanking them for their services as well as having a fun time in the 5K,” he said. “Children will have the opportunity to see Santa.” Hassan said his group agreed to split the proceeds with MPS Superkids, a foundation for children with Hunters disease. “We will split the proceeds for

one year to help them reach their goal,” he said. The holiday event is expected to bring new revenue to Miami Lakes, as participants and spectators will shop and dine on Main Street and other restaurants and shops in the area. During the Boston Marathon, Hassan said runners honored and raised money for the military and thought it would be good to bring a similar event to Miami Lakes. “I proposed it at our meeting and the Veterans Committee members agreed to it,” he said. “We’ve reached out to companies and individuals and they are also on board.” Hassan initially proposed the event the day following the town’s Veterans Day Parade but the profits were projected to be less. “The Jingle Down Main Street saw good returns so we decided on December for our event,” he said. “We’re hoping for not only individuals, but families, young and old, to run, jog or walk.” Jingle Bell Jog participants can register at www.active.com.

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Located at 5960 Miami Lakes Drive, Safari LTD. has been a family-owned toy company since 1982. Beginning with Bernard and Rosemarie Rubel, Safari was founded on the principal of providing children with “toys that teach.” Inherited by their daughter and then their grandchild, Safari has grown alongside the family that operates it. Rubel’s grandchild Alexandre Pariente and his wife Christina now run the business together as CEO and president respectively. “We are a third generation family company. It wasn’t meant to be, but we’re still here. It started with my grandfather and grandmother, then my mother came in and she worked here for 28 years. She was the owner for about five years,” explained patriarch Pariente. Safari sells educational figurines of animals, both mythical and existent, world-wide. Their purpose is to have children interact with life-like models of their favorite animals from the wild. Each sculpture is hand-painted and made to last with childfriendly components. Different sets offer various worlds of imagination for children ranging from toddlers to teens. Not only does Safari offer traditional animals like lions or elephants, but also storied creatures like dragons. They also

museums, aquariums or parks in addition to toy stores. Locally, Safari offers their statuettes in places like the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Science, Frost Museum, Miami Seaquarium, Zoo Miami and Lion Country Safari as well as Michaels and Hobby Lobby. The trinkets can be used for a variety of purposes like crafts and school projects. Safari distributes to over 25 countries, some of which have been in partnership with the business for over 20 years. “We have over 850 different items, and all of them are handpainted. The smallest one is about the size of your fingernail, and the biggest is about the size of your forearm. The process of selecting a figurine has many facets; customer demands, consumer demands, what we’re missing, competition and what we like to do,” elaborated Pariente. In addition to educational figures, Safari also makes it a point to teach about preservation and the importance of nature’s role in the lives of future generations. The company plays an active part in not only raising awareness, but also by participating in beach and park cleanups as well as fundraisers for local conservation efforts. By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker Staff Originally from Cuba, Nilo Ventura Sr. moved to New Jersey, then Palm Springs North and eventually made his way to Miami Lakes in 1977 with his wife Honorinda and two kids, Nilo Jr. and Hector Ventura. For over 40 years, Ventura Sr. has been an active member of the community. He began coaching in Optimist Park while his two sons were part of the baseball team, and he was also on the board for five years, working alongside Jack McCall. As a result, Ventura taught the youth of Miami Lakes about sportsmanship, team work and discipline. Additionally, Ventura built the batting cages which are still in use today. “That’s pretty cool, you know? Because the batting

cages are still there,” explained Ventura Jr. In the early 1990’s, Ventura had bought some land from The Graham Companies and built six homes on Cow Pen Road and four more in Royal Oaks. As a general contractor and real estate developer, he contributed to the development of Miami Lakes. Although Ventura has moved on four different occasions, he’s always stayed in the Miami Lakes area and currently lives in one of the houses he built in Royal Oaks. “He stays in the community. He plays dominoes in the community center, and he does Sunday mass at Our Lady of the Lakes,” said Ventura Jr. Now at 85-years-old, Ventura Sr. enjoys his retirement with his wife of 59 years and their six grandchildren.

Town holds School Safety community meeting THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Since the shooting massacre at Stoneman Douglas High School, which took the lives of 17 students and teachers in February, Miami Lakes’ elected voices and residents have been scrambling for solutions to prevent gun violence among students at area schools. And with the start of the new school year less than two weeks away, Miami-Dade Public Schools police and Miami Lakes police departments have developed a plan in an effort to keep students and teachers safe including dealing with mental illness incidents. At a recent School Safety Town Hall meeting at the Roberto Alonso Community Center, council members, town and schools police officers as well as Regional Superintendent Jose Bueno listened to the concerns of parents whose children attend both public and private schools in the area. Since the Parkland tragedy, parents were reluctant to drop off their kids at school, especially at Bob Graham Education Center and Miami Lakes K-8 Center, the only two schools in the town without a resource officer. The town used its own

resources to pay for two police officers at the schools estimated at $35,000 for 3,000 kids from April until the end of school in June. In the wake of the Stoneman Douglas tragedy, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law a bill which funds $400 million to place at least one resource officer at every school in the state and programs to address mental illness among students. Miami-Dade Public Schools recently swore-in nine new police officers as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which trains and deploys new officers at the schools. The new officers is the first step to keep students and teachers safe but more needs to be done to prevent a similar tragedy. “The Stoneman Douglas incident impacted us all,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “We will make sure our kids are protected no matter what.” Miami-Dade County Public Schools Deputy Police Chief Dermot Horgan said Chief Edwin Lopez and the department have stepped up efforts to prevent unwanted visitors on school grounds. When the new school year

commences, all educational facilities will have limited access and students must wear their ID badges at all time to determine who belongs on campus. In addition, the school police officers are trained to deal with mental illness among students and have undergone tactical training to handle an active shooter on school grounds. Miami Lakes Police Commander Major Javier Ruiz and Lt. Jose Gonzalez said their officers are prepared to assist resource officers in any emergency.

AUGUST 3, 2018

Horgan said his department will investigate any social media threats and Ruiz is encouraging students to report their peers if they intend to harm someone at school or off campus. “If you see something, say something,” Ruiz said. Regional Superintendent Bueno said all threat reports are investigated thoroughly including the police obtaining a warrant to search students’ homes. Students could be charged with a serious crime if the police collect enough evidence in any case.

PAGE 11

Parents whose kids are enrolled in private schools are seeking similar protection. “Whether it’s public school or private school, mental illness is mental illness period,” said resident Claudia Luces. For the new school year, parents would be notified of any incident at school and police placing the schools on lockdown thorough the town’s emergency alert, which parents can register for on the town’s website, www.miamilakes-fl. gov.

MIAMI LAKES COUNCILMEMBERS, along with representatives of the Town’s police department and Miami-Dade Public Schools police department, listen to residents’ concerns about school safety during a recent Town Hall at Roberto Alonso Community Center.

Early voting at Collins Center for August primary PAGE 12

AUGUST 3, 2018

Miami Lakes residents can vote early for Miami-Dade County’s primary election on August 28 at the Miami Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. According to Miami-Dade County’s Elections Department, registered voters can cast their ballots beginning Monday, August 13 through Friday, August 17 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, August 18 and

THE MIAMI LAKER

Sunday, August 19, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, August 20 through Friday, August 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents will be voting for candidates running for the U.S. Senate, Florida Governor, state House of Representatives, Senate and positions for the Florida Cabinet. The winners in August will

represent their respective parties in November’s general election in a showdown, as the Democrats try to gain control in Congress in Washington and the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee. The most closely watch race is the U.S. Senate will pit Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott against incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson in November, as the GOP and

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committees are expected to spend the most money is history for a senate seat. But Scott must first get past Rocky De La Fuente, a businessman and ex-Reform Party candidate for president in 2016, for the Republican nomination in August’s primary. For Florida Governor, U.S. Congressman Ron DeSantis and Agricultural Commissioner Adam Putnam are seeking the Republican nod in August to challenge Democratic candidates vying for the seat including former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, former Miami Beach mayor Phillip Levine, billionaire businessman Jeff Greene, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gullum and businessman Chris King. For Florida House of Representatives, Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, a Republican, is vacating his seat to run in District 103, as he ran unopposed in the primary and faces either Democrats Cindy Polo or Rick Tapaia in November. Polo was a communications manager and department head for Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, according to her webpage, and Tapia is a MiamiDade College professor. Polo has lived in the HialeahMiami Lakes area since she moved from Providence, Rhode Island. Tapia nabbed the United Teachers of Date endorsement shortly after he filed his papers to run for political office. State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., who is term limited, is running for the State Senate, as

he ran unopposed in the primary and seeks the District 36 seat when he faces either David Perez or Imtiaz Ahmad Mohammad. Perez, 48, is a Coral Gables firefighter lieutenant, and he was the spokesman for thenMiami-Dade County mayor Alex Penalas. Mohammad, who lives in Miramar, is CEO and publisher of the Asian Times USA. The winner in November replaces outgoing State Senator Rene Garcia, who’s also term limited. State Representative Jose Olivia of Miami Lakes, a Republican, drew no challengers and retains his seat for another term in Tallahassee, where he’s expected to become the next House speaker following the elections in November. For Agricultural Commissioner, seeking the Republican nomination to replace Putnam are State Representative Matt Caldwell, State Senator Denise Grimsley, Mike McCalister, a retired United States Army Colonel, and former State Representative Baxter Troutman. For the Democratic nomination, candidates include Homestead Mayor Jeff Porter, R. David Walker, president of the South Florida Audubon Society and attorney Nikki Fried. For Attorney General, candidates seeking the Republican nomination to replace term-limited Pam Bondi are former Circuit Court judge Ashley Moody and State Representative Frank White. For the Democratic Party, State Representative Sean Shaw and attorney Ryan Torrens will face off in the primary. Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, who Scott appointed to the position after Jeff Atwater resigned to become chief financial officer for Florida Atlantic University, is seeking his first full term when he faces Democrat Jeremy Ring, a former state senator.

In My Opinion:

‘It takes a village’ like M. Lakes By Sabine Joseph Special to The Miami Laker My Miami is not the metropolitan paradise lined with beaches that immediately comes to everyone’s mind when they think of “The 305.” My Miami is a little suburb where everything I need is no more than a short walk or a 15 minute drive away. I may want to live in the city later in life, but for now I love living in my little Town of Miami Lakes. “It takes a village to raise a child,” is a phrase that often comes to my mind when thinking of Miami Lakes. We really are like a village. Here, you know your neighbors and you’re bound to run into everyone you know at Main Street or Publix. We’d be happy to lend a helping hand or a cup of sugar. It’s just the way we are. And while I’ve always felt this way, I was reminded of it in a beautiful way on Sunday. Everything about Miami Lakes can be summed up in four words: Free ice cream social. It is just like the Miami Lakes community to think “It’s summer, it’s hot, it’s national ice cream day–let’s hand out ice cream!” It was a sight to see. The sun was shining, music was blasting

MDC head basketball coach Susan FIU’s Kaylee O’Hara attends Summons inducted in Hall of Fame Canadian U18 national camp Blazing the trail for women to play college basketball, Miami Dade College (MDC) head coach Susan Summons was honored, once again, as she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee. The recognition marks the sixth time Summons, who’s also a college professor and commu-

nity relations advocate, has been inducted into a Hall of Fame. Summons was selected as one of the Trailblazers and Pioneers of the Game in the Women’s Basketball League (WBL). According to MDC, more than 500 student athletes, who played for Summons during a

32-year tenure at the college, graduated and received her help in transferring to other universities. According to her bio, Summons is a former Women’s Pro with the WBL New Jersey Gems and New England Gulls. She is also an acclaimed motivational speaker and founder of the Best of the Rest Stars, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides a basketball training academy for girls and boys. She also worked with the USA Olympic basketball team on three different occasions, and has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sports. In addition, the Institute named Miami Dade College as an All-American Sportsmanship School.

Kaylee O'Hara, an incoming freshman for the FIU women's basketball team, has been selected as one of 20 athletes invited to the Canadian U18 women's national team tryouts and training camp, the organization announced last week. The training camp was held from July 14-28 at York University in Toronto. Following the end of the invitational tryouts and training period, the team departed for Mexico City, Mexico to begin their quest for a gold medal in

the FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship 2018. O'Hara, who signed with FIU late last spring, has already earned two Canadian Basketball player assessment camps in recent years. The forward was named to the Hooptown GTA Best in Prep Fab 48 in both 2016 and 2017, and was tabbed a 2018 Rose Classic Senior All-Star, while also earning the Mecca Game Most Valuable Player distinction.

FIU reliever Chandler Raiden signed a free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, pitcher Andres Nunez was drafted by the Kansas City Royals and FIU second baseman Eddie Silva signed a free agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. Raiden was a key cog of the Panthers bullpen the last two seasons. The senior led the Panthers’ pen with 25 appearances last season. He was 0-2 with a 4.72 ERA and had one save. Raiden made his only career start last April 25 against Miami in which he tossed two shutout innings. The Panthers defeated the Hurricanes 14-6 and swept the crosstown series.

Two M. Lakes residents compete at Youth Soccer Olympic program

Miami Lakes residents Arianna Vazquez and Jodi Smith recently competed at the Florida Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) for a chance to make the girls’ youth national teams. The two girls, who represent the Miami Lakes United Soccer Club, will take part in the selection process by competing in state, regional and national events, as the organization determines the best players from their age groups, as they train, play and compete against each other in a series of matches. Vazquez and Smith tested their skills before coaches, administrators and volunteers who were selected by the ODP and scored good points to be considered for the youth national teams.

NAF’s educational design ignites students’ passion for learning and gives businesses the opportunity to shape America’s future workforce by transforming the learning environment to include science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) infused industryspecific curricula and workbased learning experiences, including internships. Two of Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC)

A student’s advice on back-to-school preparations THE MIAMI LAKER

By Chika Ojukwu Special to The Miami Laker With school fast approaching, here are eight things students need to know before getting ready for the first day back. 1. Time Management. You just spent a whole summer mainly watching Netflix, eating and sleeping for 12 hours. Your time management might be a little warped by now, but school is not the time to test how long you can go playing Fortnite without stopping. School actually requires you to go to school for eight hours a day, and that comes with the ability to manage your time well. So go and spend your time wisely, because it can pay off in being able to do more for yourself in the long run.

2. Be prepared for ANYTHING, and I mean anything. In the first week of school, there could be a hurricane, a traveling circus, a surprise alien attack and goats magically raining from the sky. So, it is best to not procrastinate and wait until the last minute when your dog ate your homework. 3. Get your school supplies. No one wants to be that person on the first day of school who asks for a pencil. By the end of the year, you’ll be lucky if you find anyone remembering to wear their left sock, let alone be stocked with school supplies. But in the beginning of it all it is beneficial to actually have something to write with and supplies to show teachers you are prepared to work.

Miami-Dade County Public School Division of Academics held its annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Scholars Banquet in late May. Bob Graham Education Center students Alejandro Fernandez, Roberto Martinez and Valentin Velazco-Pryce were recognized for representing the district, state and country for their abilities in VEX IQ robotics. During the robotic season,

they won the Excellence Award, Skills Challenge Award, Teamwork Challenge Award and competed at the World’s VEX IQ Competition. The administration and community are extremely proud of all that they’ve accomplished in the two years they’ve participated in the Robocats Academy. Special recognition goes to their teacher and coach, Marilyn Dieppa.

BGEC students recognized at STEAM Scholars banquet

4. Work smarter, not harder. It’s no longer cool to stay up until 3 a.m. in the morning. Getting your required 7 to 8 hours of rest is the new cool. Burning yourself out studying for a test the next day has no benefit whatsoever, and is only detrimental to your health. Being an effective student is about studying every day at an easy-to-follow pace that doesn’t overload your body. 5. Know your true friends. There are so many different people at school, and it’s very important to open your doors to see what is out there. But make sure to keep your true friends close. School is a place to be happy and express yourself, but when there is a friend that prevents you from doing that, they are not a true friend. True friends have got your back and you have theirs. 6. Ask questions. It’s better to be informed than ignorant. When you are lost, have questions about homework or just need a helping hand, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Questions that can enlighten your views and educate those around you. No matter how young or old, ask teachers and other students whatever you need to improve on yourself. 7. Have a perfect soundtrack. Music is food for the

AUGUST 3, 2018

soul. Having the perfect soundtrack on the first day can lighten up your day. Music makes you smile, laugh and just gives you a better state of mind. 8. Most of all, just be yourself. Sounds cliché, but it’s true. School is the place you are going to be for the rest of the

PAGE 23

year, and you don’t want to pretend to be someone else. Your friends and your teachers are there to see the real you. School is what you make of it, so do your best and have fun. (Chika Ojukwu is a member of the newspaper staff at Barbara Goleman Senior High School.)

Miami Lakes K-8 Center recognized as an Everglades Champion School for 2018

Miami Lakes K-8 Center was among eight elementary schools from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Orange counties recognized as Everglades Champion Schools for 2018 by the Everglades Foundation. The school was chosen by the Foundation after teachers and students participated in a series of events including creating fundraising initiatives to Everglades-focused field trips and projects; encouraging Everglades-focused research for science fairs and participating in local, state and national green schools programs. The Foundation reviewed the evaluation criteria of Everglades Champion Schools Recognition program for Miami Lakes K-8 Center, which reflects the goal of the Foundation

of creating plans to save the Everglades and protect the county’s supply of drinking water for future generations. The Everglades Champion School Recognition Program is designed to showcase, recognize and model exceptional accomplishments of students, faculty and their schools. The goal of the program is to encourage schools to move beyond presenting the Everglades Literacy curriculum and toward making Everglades conservation a core value of the institution. The program also allows students and teachers to develop plans to protect the Everglades and educate generations on the effects of the complex ecosystem.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITYʼS Biscayne Bay campus recently hosted a multiagency emergency event highlighted by rescue efforts by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, where officials participated in an exercise, combining land, sea, and aviation activities and training. The event was an opportunity for public safety agencies to train and experiment with new technologies that can help save lives after a storm or watercraft accidents.

Pace’s David Barbier returns from Ghana trip THE MIAMI LAKER

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s (Pace) senior David Barbier has returned home after a 12-day trip to West Africa’s Republic of Ghana with the Nyah Project Fellowship. The Nyah Project organization, whose core belief is that “Travel Awakens Leaders,” offered Barbier and 11 other diverse high school students from the South Florida area the opportunity to travel to Ghana in an effort to cultivate stronger leaders in the community, and to prepare them for their future endeavors beyond high school and college. Selection process for this fellowship began in August 2017 and consisted of an online application followed by a 16hour intensive seminar and an interview before a 12-member panel. In May, Barbier was excited to learn he had been selected as the first student from Pace to have been chosen for this expe-

rience. He then attended several training sessions where he and the other fellows learned about what to expect in their international journey to Ghana and once they arrived to their host town of Akatsi. During their trip, the fellows explored the land, learned about the culture and enjoyed meeting the people of Ghana. They witnessed how they could make an impact during their short stay while visiting local elementary, middle and high schools. They supplied the students with basic school supplies, assisted in teaching the younger children lessons in math and reading and enjoyed soccer games with them in the courtyard. An especially memorable moment for Barbier was when they had a chance to speak to a group of Ghanaian high school students. In addressing their questions, he was surprised to hear how aware the youth of Ghana was about the issues faced by today’s American teenagers such as gun violence,

education and the experience of living as black youth in America. During another emotional moment, the group met a mother who had lost her husband several years prior. Since then, she had not had the financial means to send her children back to school. The Nyah fellows worked together to gather a pool of their own personal spending money, making it possible for the chil-

dren to receive tutoring, return to school and continue their education. “This experience with the Nyah Project has inspired a new attitude within me to pay it forward,” expressed Barbier. “The flame within me to make a difference is burning stronger than ever, and I cannot ignore what’s happening in the world around us.” Barbier is an active member of Pace High School. He is

involved in various clubs and was elected by his peers as Student Government president for this upcoming school year. This life altering experience will be one that he will never forget, and the lessons learned will translate into his ability to be a stronger leader among Pace’s student body and across many other aspects of his daily life.

ence. During the week, the students resided on STU’s campus and explored college life through theological education, prayer, worship and hands-on service activities. The group participated in an ecological beach cleanup at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach where they learned about the park’s history and environmental issues. They also traveled north to Immokalee to engage with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, an internationally recognized organization that promotes the rights of immigrant farm workers. STU Impact was established in 2015 through a grant to the university, and it seeks to encourage young people to explore theological traditions, ask questions about contemporary moral issues and inspires them to examine how their faith calls them to lives of service.

Pace LIFE leaders attend Living in Faith youth camp By Melissa Sanchez Special to The Miami Laker One of the main focuses within the Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) community is to offer students a high school faith experience. To fulfill that purpose, Pace runs the Living in Faith Experience youth group (LIFE). The LIFE program provides students all over the world with opportunities to grow in their faith throughout student-led weekly meetings. This summer, six of the Pace LIFE leaders, Daniella Conde, Sade Rogers, Nathan Bonet, Teresa Macias, Joshua Dubon and Amayah Novela had the opportunity to attend the LIFE summer retreat program at Camp Tecaboca located in Mountain Home, Texas. Overall, the program consisted of a week-long experience where the LIFE leaders got to enjoy all kinds of activities including icebreakers, meditation sessions, ministry workshops, small group and large group discussions, sacraments and prayer.

They learned all about strengthening their faith-based communities through various team-building exercises, and were also able to participate in various self-reflection activities where they truly learned how to embrace both their strengths and weaknesses in carrying out their roles as leaders. “It’s one of those experiences that you will remember and use for the rest of your life,” said Rogers. In addition, Pace’s campus ministry director Andres Novela held workshops for all the students at Camp Tecaboca with topics including the call to action in carrying out commitment to faith, and social justice issues that relate to the world today. All week long, the Pace LIFE leaders were asked to create a mission statement. They committed to raise more awareness about the LIFE program, and to be innovative within their leadership positions. They hope to use this experience as a way to maintain Christ at the center of the Pace family.

Braman Family Foundation provides financial aid for Miami Dade College and Florida International students For Miami Dade College and Florida International University students who were seeking financial aid to continue their education, the Braman Family Foundation has come to the rescue again. The Foundation has renewed its commitment for $1 million in scholarships for another 1,000 students to complete their studies at the two colleges. The scholarships serve as an incentive for students to enroll full-time during their last year and accelerate completion. Last year, 500 MDC students and 500 FIU students benefited from the $1,000 scholarship. This year, another 1,000 senior students will be the recipients for the scholarship funds. “We are so proud to see our scholarship support have a posi-

tive impact on students at Miami Dade College and FIU this year,” said Debi Wechsler, director of the Braman Family Foundation. “It gives us great pleasure to renew our support and do all we can to ensure Miami students have ample opportunities to succeed.” MDC student Keionest Felder, who’s studying computer engineering, said the scholarship helps him accomplish his goal of owning his own technology company some day. “My completion scholarship helped pay for my tuition this year,” said Felder, who’s graduating this year with an associates degree. “We are incredibly grateful the Braman Family Foundation has renewed its support for next year,” added Dr. Lenore Rodicio, executive vice president and provost at MDC. “A gift of $500 per semester really goes a long way to helping our students make ends meet, and we have seen such great results in the first year of this scholarship support. It is giving our students the extra boost they need to graduate and confidently enter the workforce.”
