Manager Selection Committee lists preferences for candidates By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The next town manager for Miami Lakes must have at least five years experience in government or the private sector, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or a law degree, and be effective in carrying out the town’s strategic plan and operating a budget between $15 and $30 million. The candidate preferably is bilingual and may be asked to move to Miami Lakes to share the everyday experience of residents. The Miami Lakes Town Manager Selection Committee laid out the criteria for candi-

dates applying for the top position, hoping to initially narrow the list to 15 then selecting the top 7 candidates for the current and new council members to interview to determine the best person for the job. In addition, the next top town administrator must be responsive to the needs of elected officials and residents, possess good project management skills, a good public speaker, creative, a mediator, a community leader with an outgoing personality and able to handle difficult situations. Candidates also can have a law degree or experience in business and public administra-

tion, accounting and finance and education. At the committee’s meeting last week, the members also recommended a point system to further evaluate the candidates during the interview process and determine if they are ethical. Candidates who score a total of 50 points (25 points for experience) would qualify for the next round of the town manager job search. “We will be looking for those with bachelor’s degrees,” said committee chairman Ramiro Inguanzo. “But I have many successful people who don’t (Please see Page 2)

Deputy Town Manager Andrea Agha new Manager for Village of Key Biscayne

Andrea Agha, who began her career with the Town of Miami Lakes in 2010, and has served as the Deputy Town Manager since 2014, has accepted the position of Village Manager for the Village of Key Biscayne. In an email to Town Manager Alex Rey, Agha said, “I am deeply appreciative of the support and warmth I have received from the Miami Lakes Town Council, staff and community. Miami Lakes has been instrumental in developing my knowledge, skills, and abilities to be an effective municipal administrator.” Agha’s resignation is effective July 6. During her Miami Lakes career, Agha implemented the Town’s permitting, financial and Geographic Information Systems, served as chair of the Town’s Brand Steering Committee which established the tag line “Growing Beautifully,” and

developed the Lien Amnesty Program. Among other achievements, Agha was responsible for the implementation of the Town’s 2025 Strategic Plan with 63 percent of the initiatives completed or underway. “Andrea Agha has a great career in front of her and she will do great things in Key Biscayne. They are very lucky to have her,” said Rey. At a farewell reception at Anacapri, joined by family, colleagues, and town residents, Mayor Manny Cid presented Agha with a Proclamation declaring July 6, 2018, as Andrea Agha Day in the Town of Miami Lakes. “The Town Council and I commend Andrea Agha for her outstanding skills, work, and initiatives and exceptional commitment to the Town of Miami Lakes while serving our community,” Cid said.

Education is important but not as important as the job experience they have working in government or the private sector.” “The point system would be great interview questions,” said committee member Dr. Richard Pulido. International City Manager Association credentials, which includes at least 4 years experience in government and tests for skills in key areas, is also among the qualifications. Inguanzo, an assistant village manager for Bal Harbour, said he has ICMA credentials as a town manager and some members of the organization are not. He said some chose not to become ICMA credentialed mangers. According to Town Attorney Raul Gastesi, among the 70 applicants, 33 of them met the town’s minimum requirements for the job and seven were “on the fence.” “Some of them have the experience but managed a budget less than Miami Lakes,” he said. The committee’s $20,000 budget includes attorney fees, advertising the position and background checks. Gastesi said he would need

council’s approval for additional fees if the budget runs out. The town may also spend more money on candidates’ travel and hotel expenses. Pulido said one candidate who lives in North Florida asked the town to pay for her flight and hotel stay. “She can stay at Shula’s Hotel at night but do we have the dollars for that,” Pulido said. “I have not seen a budget to debate the areas where the dollars are spent.” The selection committee has until October 1 to complete its portion of the job search. The committee selected July 24 to August 28 to narrow the list of candidates to 7 and interview them before sending them before the current and new council members. With a November election, the Town Council will see three new faces as Council members Tim Daubert and Ceasar Mestre reached their term limits and Vice Mayor Frank Mingo is vacating his seat to run for the state senate. The new council members will ultimately select the new town manger to replace the retiring Alex Rey, who will have served as town manager for more than 14 years.

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker Staff For Karla Acosta, Miami Lakes is not just a town, it’s family. Acosta first came to Miami Lakes in 2012. As a single mother, she wanted to give her then two-year-old son the chance to attend a good school. Without a car, Acosta made the most of the resources Miami Lakes had to offer, and she used the town’s bus to travel around. Because of financial hardships, Acosta found it difficult to take her son out to the movies or other family activities. The town provided free entertainment on weekends for the community, and gave Acosta the opportunity to spend quality time with her son without having to spend a dime. “It’s been a blessing,” Acosta said, holding back tears. “When I moved, I didn’t have a car or job. The only resource I had for transportation was the bus. Everything I needed was in Miami Lakes. I met so many people, and it’s like a huge family. When I moved I was going through a divorce, and it was a very tough time for me. Our Lady of the Lakes school and church was there for me. It wasn’t easy.” Fast forward to 2018, Acosta

KARLA ACOSTA plays a role in the community that had helped her when she needed it most. In addition to being a member of Miami Lakes’ Cultural Affairs Committee, she’s volunteered at Memorial West Children’s Emergency Room as well as His House Children’s Home. She’s also a volunteer at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where she teaches Religious Education on Saturdays’s and was a Homeroom Representative and coach for her son’s baseball team. “It helps me help others. You see people from different situations, and you want to keep giv-

ing back to the community that gave back to you when you had nothing. You look back and you’re like, I was there once, I know the feeling,” remarked Acosta when asked about being an active member in the town. She’s currently working towards her Business Associates Degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in psychology and criminal justice at Keiser University. Her end goal is to work for the town, or her passion in social work. “If you were to ask Karla which hat, out of the many that she wears, is her favorite I am sure that she would say being a mother,” explained Acosta’s sister-in-law, Natyia Jimenez. “You can find Karla in Miami Lakes, or at just about any city event, volunteering and doing her part as a Miami Lakes resident to make a difference in her community.” Community members like Acosta are the reason why Miami Lakes keeps growing beautifully. If you know someone like Acosta who has shaped the community for the better, call 305-817-4078 or email kayleenp@miamilaker.com.

Principal Joaquin Hernandez retires after 25 years THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Surrounded by years of awards and photos with family and students, principal Joaquin Hernandez sits in his office awaiting retirement. After two decades of being part of the public school system, he is now ready to take a break and enjoy the rest of what life has to offer outside of classrooms and busy hallways.

Popular Ice Cream Social scheduled for Saturday, July 14 at Park West

Ice Cream Social is back and it’s sweeter than ever! Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force announced the 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social to celebrate National Ice Cream Month to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. Thanks to the efforts of Miami Lakes resident and previous Mayor for a Day, Ellica Quintero, this has now become a Miami Lakes summer tradition. This year’s creamy event is sponsored by Miami Lakes AutoMall, Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, and Karate America. The event includes a rock climbing wall, inflatable slide, photo booth, music and more. Ice cream vendors include Ice Cream Distributors of Florida and Blue Bunny. Before becoming principal of Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGSHS) in 2011, Hernandez was principal at Miami Lakes Middle School since 2005. He was also assistant principal at BGSHS in 1995 and Braddock in 1994. For 25 years, Hernandez has been part of educating the students of Miami Lakes. In fact, everywhere he goes, Hernandez is constantly reminded of the affect he’s had on student’s lives. “There are very few places that I travel to here in the United States that I would not be able to meet at least one alumni or a parent of alumni,” Hernandez said. “Some years ago, I was at a regional airport in Alabama, and there was a girl taking tickets at the door, and she said ‘Mr. Hernandez! How are you?’ it’s just an example of how blessed I’ve been.” Hernandez believes that his impact has not only been within the campus walls, but out in the community as well. In fact, for his last graduating class as principal, students earned up to 62,000 hours of community service as a group. “Ive learned to be thankful and cognizant of other peoples needs, and to do everything you can possibly do to achieve what others think is impossible to achieve,” Hernandez explained. “And in the process, help others in your community. I believe the greatest gift an individual can have is humility and an open spirit to help those in need.”

JULY 6, 2018

PAGE 5

His influence did not go unnoticed by town residents as well. When invited to Town Hall to meet with Mayor Manny Cid, he was surprised to hear the school’s band playing outside in the distance. When he turned around, Hernandez was greeted by students and alumni alike, all shaking his hand and thanking him for guiding students at BGSHS. “That was the biggest surprise of my life. We had students there, we had parents there, we had the town there. My wife was part of the deception, because she knew all along!” Hernandez laughed. “It was the biggest surprise. It was amazing. The mayor gave me a proclamation and a plaque, and I had a beautiful evening. It was quite impacting.” After 14 years of being a teacher and 12 as a principal, Hernandez always had two remaining constants. In fact, the ideals were so definite, they were written on post-its on his desktop. One sticky note read ‘Darwin’ to remind him to continue adapting and learning new Joaquin Hernandez sporting his typical BGSHS ways when it came to leading gear. BGSHS, and the other was marked ‘Thankful.’ Do you have a family member or friend that needs “I am so very proud of you,” daily activities, exercises, socialization and care? Hernandez remarked to the collective of BGSHS. “I’m so proud of all the folks that have come through our hallways, and the things they accomplish and the things they are going to “Miami Lakes Only Adult Day Service” accomplish. It has been truly a humbling experience to have been given the opportunity to be at this school.”

$55 million bond proposal a concern for Council THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff A $55 million bond referendum proposal to complete the master plan for Miami Lakes Optimist Park and purchase open green space left Town Council members and residents miffed over an attempt to rush a vote for the November ballot during the midterm elections. At a special meeting last week, most residents criticized the timing of Mayor Manny Cid’s idea to ask voters for their approval to borrow money to finish a wish list of projects that are included in the town’s strategic plan. Most lawmakers alluded to learning about the special meeting just days before the conference and didn’t have enough time to study the proposal and prepare questions for town staff. “I don’t know what my questions are,” said Councilmember Ceaser Mestre. “Did land owners approach us? It seems like we are putting the cart before the horse. I appreciate your passion but it looks bad.” The $55 million bond referendum would finance the renovation project for Miami Lakes Optimist Park ($5 million); improvements to Royal Oaks Park and the Mary Collins Community Center; purchase Madden’s Hammock and the Par 3 Golf Course ($ 7 million) and preserve them as passive parks; $20 million for green space acquisition; and build a bridge park ($2.5 million) on the N.W. 154 Street I-75 over-

pass to keep the road closed to outside traffic. But residents said the issue should’ve initially been discussed at a workshop instead of asking council members to vote on ballot language, and determine if Miami Lakes can afford the debt since the town may receive less in tax revenues if voters approve the additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption. “We are concerned about the budget and cuts,” said Maria Kramer. “With the additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption, which most likely will get approved, how much will the town lose? An issue this big without input from residents is an insult.” Council members agreed to workshop the issue but Cid’s colleagues and residents chastised him for rushing an issue of this magnitude for the ballot in November. Vice Mayor Frank Mingo was vocal about his objections to rushing the ballot, saying he’s “very” disappointed the town’s protocol had not been followed. “I learned of the meeting just days before,” he said. “This should be discussed as a new business item then discussed during several workshops. This is the biggest decision for the this town since incorporation.” Cid defended his position, indicating his only intention was to discuss the proposal and determine the town’s direction on possibly borrowing money to speed up the capital improve-

ment projects. He said the land acquisition fund was his idea since his office has been flooded with phone calls from constituents asking the town to preserve land to prevent over development. “People ask me about these issues and when the special meeting was called, I put the items on the agenda to see where we can go from there,” Cid said. “My phone has been bombarded with calls from residents about let’s do something about preserving land. I say let’s put our money where our month is. Let’s buy land and preserve it forever.” Cid said reality is the town isn’t able to compete the parks renovations without borrowing money since the pay-as-you go plan has failed. “We have to be honest with the residents, if we don’t do anything about it, it’s not going to happen,” he said. He said Miami Lakes kids travel to Weston, Pembroke Pines and Doral to play at their park facilities since the field conditions at the town’s parks are not safe. Cid said upon his request, Town Manager Alex Rey furnished him a list of under-funded and unfinished projects in Miami Lakes’ strategic plan. With 19 on the wish list, town staff estimated the costs at $55 million or more to complete them all. “I will keep dreaming big as mayor and I don’t care who criticizes me,” Cid said. “I won’t

stop until this town is at the level where it needs to be.” But council members said the money for 19 projects is too high for the town’s budget to cover over a number of years. Council members will prioritize some of the projects at the workshop to put before Miami Lakes voters in November or next year during a special election. Council members said the master plan for the 47-year-old Miami Lakes Optimist Park, which includes a gymnasium, and the N.W. 154 Street bridge park should be the town’s top

priorities if they were placed on a ballot. A bridge park would keep the roadway closed to traffic since the county is pursuing to opening up the bridge in the future. Rodriguez said the 13 yearold pay-as-you-go plan is not working to complete the master plan for the park. “Our parks need serious rehab,” he said. “I wan’t my kids to enjoy playing the in the park and hope my grandkids can enjoy it was well.” (Please see Page 11)

Main St. Players offer Five Women Wearing The Same Dress THE MIAMI LAKER

Five Women Wearing the Same Dress opens July 20 at Main Street Playhouse (MSP) located at 6766 Main Street. The young and talented cast of five women and one man have been rehearsing six days a week to bring this hilarious and touching comedy to life. Auditions were held in late March, the show was cast and scripts were distributed to the cast while the director TatyanaMarie Carlo, who is attending Brown University on a scholarship for an MFA in Directing, was in town for spring break.

With the beginning of summer break, rehearsals began June 25, and the cast and crew are working as a well-oiled machine to open the show. Working alongside director Tatyana-Marie Carlo is the production manager Patty Fernandez. The cast consists of Icela Marliese as Frances, Lorena Estevez as Meredith, AmandaLynn Williams as Trisha, Thiana Berrick as Georgeanne, Rei Capote as Mindy and Kevin Rubi as Tripp. Five Women Wearing The

Rodriguez said he doesn’t mind borrowing money. “Everyone has debt,” he said. “I have a debt and you have a debt. If I didn’t have a debt I couldn’t afford to buy a house or car because I don’t have the cash. I don’t mind floating a bond to see if residents want to borrow the money to help out our parks.” Other residents shared his sentiments.

Terry Murphy, a government consultant and former aide to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natasha Seijas, said he would vote in favor of the bond referendum. “I would be happy to vote for the projects, especially the bridge park,” he said. “I would like to see some of the these get done before I go.” Alex Sanchez said the parks should be competed before his kids go off to college. “Our kids are grown now and

ARNOLD SELTZER

Long time Miami Lakes resident, community leader and educational activist Arnold F. Seltzer passed away on April 6 surrounded by his immediate family in Stuart, Florida. He had turned 93 in January. Seltzer was born in Brooklyn and later lived with his grandparents in Yardville, New Jersey. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Marsh as a QuarterMaster First Class in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during WWII. Seltzer enrolled at the University of Miami in 1947 where he met his future bride, Mary. They were married in 1950 after he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. They settled in Hialeah in 1951 where he eventually founded Jackson Outdoor Advertising Company in 1954. His largest client, Dade Federal Savings and Loan, offered him an opportunity as a branch manager in one of their troubled locations, and then a second branch location. In each instance, Seltzer changed the culture of the business model and turned both locations into successful offices. Ultimately, Dade Federal promoted him to its main Downtown Miami location where he was eventually promoted to Senior Vice President and assistant to the President, a position he held until 1970 when he retired from the institution. While raising three children in Hialeah, Seltzer was active in the Miami Jaycees, served as

the first male president of the Twin Lake PTA, was a member of Rotary Club International for many years, volunteered with Boy Scouts of America, and was active in numerous political campaigns for friends and colleagues seeking offices in city, state and federal governments. In 1969, the Seltzers moved to the newly developed Miami Lakes community where they lived until 2003 when they moved to Stuart to spend their winters. Seltzer was a major force in raising funds for, and creating what is now known as the Miami Lakes Educational Center. The main conference room at the school was named in his honor. He was the Committee Advisor and Liaison for the school where he donated the majority of his time after retirement. He was instrumental in expanding the Culinary Arts Department at the school and was a force in helping the school add a large room for the kitchen facilities which continues to be used today for community activities and school functions. Mary Seltzer was a native of Wisconsin and the couple spent their summers in Wausau, Wisconsin enjoying the lifestyle of the mid-west and the friendliness of their neighbors and shopkeepers. Seltzer is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary, his children Jackson (Brenda) of New Caney, Texas; Richard, of Houston, Texas; and Jane Beres (Steve) of Stuart. He leaves five grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

FIU softball standouts selected in ASBA Draft PAGE 18

JULY 6, 2018 THE MIAMI LAKER

Florida International University softball standouts Stephanie Texeira and Julia Gilbert were selected in the inaugural American Softball Association (ASBA) Draft two weeks ago, as the pair seek to continue their stellar playing careers on the field. Texeira was drafted 32nd

overall by Moh-BEEL! USA in the eighth round on Wednesday, while Gilbert was selected 75th overall by El Pro Ballers in the fifth on-call round. As an oncall selection, Gilbert will potentially be called up if draftees from the previous oncall rounds are unable to play. The ASBA is the newest pro

league in women's softball, joining the National Pro Fastpitch league. The 2018 ASBA season will run from the middle of June through the end of July, with all games being played in Mobile, Alabama. The league is comprised of four teams – Moh-BEEL! USA, Outkast, El Pro Ballers and

Future 1s – that will compete for a chance to play in the ASBA Championship, July 2731. Texeira was a four-time allconference honoree with the Panthers, while also winning the C-USA Freshman of the Year award in 2014. The Miami native graduated FIU as the program's all-time leader in batting average (.405), slugging percentage (.759), on-base (.543), runs (159), home runs (47), RBI (190), walks (147), total bases (420), defensive putouts (1,191), while second in doubles (45) and fifth in hits (224). Gilbert's career with FIU spanned two seasons after transferring from Indian River State College, serving as the Panthers' primary catcher. From behind-the-plate, Gilbert caught 19 runners stealing in back-toback seasons to lead the C-USA in both years.

M. Lakes Optimist Club seeks to revive dormant girls’ softbal program

The Optimist Club of Miami Lakes is seeking to restart its fall softball program, which has been dormant for two seasons for lack of girl's participation and volunteers. Longtime club member Jim Hamilton said the 58 year-old organization is calling on girls between the ages of 12 and 14 to sign up to play softball and help recruit their peers to join the program as well. The Optimist Club needs at

least 20 girls to resume the program and keep it running. The organization also is seeking coaches and volunteers and sponsors to help finance the program, including scholarships and other means of financial aid for kids whose parents can't afford the registration fees. The club wants parents to get involved with their kids’ softball, as the program offers to bring families together and making new friends. Mia Riobueno, an eighthgrade student at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, plays softball in Pembroke Pines but would love to play in Miami Lakes if the club can assemble the teams. She’s encouraging her peers to come out and play softball at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. “Softball can keep you very active and helps kids who are not sure about themselves do better in certain things,” she said. “Softball helps you achieve many things like becoming a faster runner and having quick reflexes. Softball can do it all for you.” Softball registration dates are on Saturdays, July 28, August 4 and August 11 at Miami Lakes Optimist Park, 6425 Miami Lakeway North. Registration fee is $160 per player and the organization is offering a family discount of $10. Softball practice begins in August and the regular season commences on Saturday, September 8. The Spartans defeated Jacksonville Bolles, 10-4, to win their seventh state title in baseball. MLEC’s Capstone projects based on four years of study, preparation By Roxana Casanueva and Devin Dubon Special to The Miami Laker Every year, Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) seniors of each academy and strand combine all the skills they’ve gained over their four years of high school into one big end-of-the-year project. These capstones are all different, with every student putting their own spin on their strand’s selected assignments. The engineers are tasked with making any type of original mechanism, digital arts students must complete a digital advertisement campaign as well as compile a portfolio of some of their best works throughout their four years, and journalists are asked to produce a product that relates to media or marketing. What all of these capstones have in common is that at the end of the year, each student must present their final product to a panel of judges who decide their grades. “Presenting in front of judges is pretty nerve racking. Standing up there feels like an eternity, and once they start talking it makes you feel even more anxious. But in the end, all the practice you did beforehand pays off and causes them to like it,” said Michael Burgos, an IT student enrolled in the Cisco strand. The work that these students do is up to them. Although some

teachers may give some basic guidelines, it is up to the student to decide on what exactly they will do. Through these projects, students have to master the skills they’ve been taught before, as well as learn brand new skills that they may have previously had no experience with. When these students finally complete these projects, they’re able to present them in front of a panel of industry professionals who give the students feedback as well as constructive criticism. Journalism seniors Alexandra Reboredo and Daylin Delgado presented their capstones in front of two judges. Jose Otero, a representative from the yearbook printing company Herff Jones and Jennifer Bakeman, a journalist who has worked for Politico and WLRN, South Florida’s local National Public Radio (NPR) station. These two judges were amazed by their work, and could not have imagined doing

this college level project as high school students. “The students were so impressive, they were able to exercise so many different skills professionally. I was reviewing their portfolios and thought about how I wasn’t able to do anything of that level probably until I was a sophomore or junior in college,” said Bakeman. In addition to improving skills, these capstones serve to prepare these students for the future, not only in their strands or specific industry, but in any path of life they choose. “Many of my students are able to graduate and start entry-level positions because of the skills they’ve acquired, and because of their portfolio,” said communications academy head Odalis Soto. “Many students decide not to pursue college and become freelancers and entrepreneurs. The skills they’ve learned here helped them to accomplish this and become successful.”

unique community pantry The non-profit organization Giving Gators, along with the help of local business sponsors, school administration and community leaders, unveiled the Giving Gators Community Pantry in June. The goal is to bring food, gently used clothing, toiletries and school supplies to K-12 students and families in need within the community. “Without the proper nutrition and basic essentials, kids cannot concentrate or perform well in school,” said Daylin Garcia, the Giving Gators founder, speaking on behalf of the organization.

The Community Pantry is located at Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGHS) and has been dedicated to principal Joaquin Hernandez for his 28 years of lifetime service to Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The Pantry will be operating during the school year, but more importantly, during the most critical times when schools are not in session, afternoon, weekends and holidays. The Giving Gators encourages the community to get involved. Donations and contributions are always needed and much appreciated.

Pace High School inducts 15 new students into the Spanish Natl. Honor Society By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker On June 1, Monsignor Pace High School (Pace) held an induction ceremony for the new members of their National Spanish Honor Society (NSHS). Pace’s administration, faculty, staff and proud family members gathered as 11 of the 15 inductees were recognized for their hard work and dedication in their Spanish curriculum. The induction took place at the school’s Administration Building, and NSHS Moderator Francisco Soto spoke about the values of this club and the many

opportunities that it offers. During the ceremony, candles were distributed and lit as the inductees recited the NSHS pledge in unison where they promise to dedicate themselves academically to the study of the Spanish language and recognize the strong binding power languages have among people of various origins, races and religions. Each inductee was then presented with a certificate indicating that they are now part of the NSHS, and the group enjoyed a celebratory reception in their honor.

M. Lakes Educational Ctr. tops all previous test scores By Yasmine Mezawi Special to The Miami Laker Through trial and error, through countless restless nights of doing homework and projects, through the never-ending cycle of studying, Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) students have achieved yet another milestone. Even when the school has almost reached the summit of excellence, the students’ dedication always seems to surpass everyone’s expectations. The 2017-2018 Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) and End-of-course (EOC) assessment scores show a vast improvement in comparison to those of last year, further proving how dedicated MLEC’s students and faculty continue to be. “We had an 80 percent passing rate last year in the U.S. history EOC. To see it move up to an 84 percent, I mean that’s the kids, teachers, and administration. It’s a package deal. Teachers did all the heavy lifting and the students worked so hard. The dedication seen in not only my students, but those of other teachers, was incredible,” said History Department chair John Moffi. MLEC’s hard work is not only shown through these scores, but also amongst the school’s 99 percent graduation rate, where 96 percent are enrolled in college, and one percent are enlisted in the U.S. mil-

itary. Additionally, MLEC’s tireless work also helped to receive the status of being an “A” school for the eleventh time. “These preliminary results are a testament to the hard work and determination of our entire MLEC family. Despite all of the challenges and hardships that we encountered this year, including the devastation from Hurricane Irma, students made incredible learning gains,” said English department chair, Neyda Borges. “I am fortunate to work with focused, brilliant students and with talented and dedicated colleagues in a district that always puts education first.” Our top Jaguar, principal Lourdes Diaz, helped attain such academic prestige in every field that she could. She was committed to ensure the continued success of the school by staying after hours to assure that everything ran smoothly, and she also approached new methods of helping students and teachers. “We have an outstanding faculty here at MLEC. They are true professionals, dedicated to their craft and to the students they teach. We also have amazing students who are serious about their learning. When you combine those two elements, you can’t help but get terrific results,” said Diaz.

Barbara Goleman student Gabriella Mestre organizes fight against homelessness By Lupe Cabrera Special to The Miami Laker Barbara Goleman’s (BGHS) very own Gabriella Mestre created an organization to alleviate the homelessness issue in Miami-Dade by encouraging local teenagers to get involved and do more volunteer work, aptly named Teens Against Homelessness. According to Mestre, “Miami has a high standard of living and is flourishing economically. However, more than 1,000 people are on the streets. No one chooses to be homeless. This issue isn’t being addressed sufficiently and I want to change that.” Mestre and other teens often get together and volunteer at the Camillus House and other nonprofits. Although a lot of these centers don’t allow anyone below the age of 18 to volunteer, she persisted. She was able to get permission from these organizations to go in and volunteer with groups of teenagers

younger than 18. Besides volunteering with several organizations, Mestre has started collection drives on behalf of Teens Against Homelessness for clothes, food, and hygiene items at two schools. She has collected over 2,000 items and has donated it all to the Camillus House. Mestre has even bigger goals for her organization. Some aspirations include increasing community participation by creating her Teens Against Homelessness club at BGHS and helping the homeless acquire jobs by creating a GED program to meet necessary educational requirements. Mestre is providing the homeless with the support they never got through her organization. She is changing the world and helping anyone in need. She is among those in the younger generation to create a positive impact on society and she is just getting started.

MLK-8 Center announces staff, PTSA changes THE MIAMI LAKER

By Rene I. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker This school year witnessed a wave of change go through Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK8), leaving it much stronger as it continues to build on a long- standing tradition of excellence. With the leadership of new principal Yanelys Canales, and her assistant principals Veronika Sasturrias, Kelly Cabrera, and Dan Gangeri, the school achieved designation as a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) school by the MiamiDade County School district. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The administration is hopeful that the school will achieve Silver STEAM designation this school year. The new administration also implemented new enhanced security and access measures to ensure the students’ safety.

The wave of change also included a new Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Executive Board. The 20172018 MLK8 PTSA Board led by president Dianne Jauregui, vice president Yesenia Fernandez, treasurer Marisol Rodriguez Basulto, Jaclyn Cabrera, and René I. Basulto, worked closely with the new administration to provide and augment the tools teachers needed to better educate the students. With the help of dedicated parent volunteers and community sponsors, the MLK8 PTSA secured the necessary funds to provide programs and tools requested by the school’s administration and educational departments. The MLK8 PTSA provided $7,500 for new science text books, $2,000 for much-needed art supplies, and $6,500 for music supplies, satisfying the departments entire wish lists. The administration’s wish list included a technology cart with 25 laptops for student instruction. The PTSA was able to double the request with $28,000

towards the purchase of two technology carts with 50 laptops. These are in addition to other projects that were provided for the teachers and school beautification. Overall, the PTSA provided close to $80,000 in programs to improve education. The PTSA improved its online presence with an expanded online store for uniforms and fundraising programs, minimizing classroom interruptions. The most significant program in this area was the launch of the MLK8 PTSA Mobile App, which provides links and an essential communication portal for parents and students. The app, which currently has 1,300 users, can be downloaded for free in the App Store and Google Play Store. The 2018-2019 school year PTSA Executive Board was recently elected, and hopes to continue and build on this wave of change. “I am excited to see what next year will bring as we have turned over the board to a wonderful group of volunteers who

St. Thomas University catcher Nelson Mompierre was drafted in the 29th round (860th overall) by the New York Mets in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. Marrero became the second player from St. Thomas to be drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft joining fellow catcher Elih Marrero (8th round, Red Sox). Mompierre, hit .395 with 77 RBI and a team-best 15 home runs and 25 doubles in 2018. Mompierre ranked seventh in the nation in doubles, eighth in RBI, and ninth in slugging percentage (.754). Mompierre was part of a St. Thomas University team that led the NAIA statistically in batting average (.361), runs scored (652), hits (817) and doubles (197) in 2018. Erika Castroman plans to continue her homeless aid during Christmas holidays

For the second consecutive year, Erika Castroman’s initiative to help the homeless during the Christmas holidays was a huge success. On December 25, Castroman, a standout softball player and academic scholar at American High School, and her family distributed 100 drawstring bags full of non-perishable food items and toiletries to the homeless community in Downtown Miami. Castroman increased her goal to 100 bags from 50 bags which she had distributed in 2016. Her crusade to raise awareness of homelessness was made possible with the generous help of friends, family and businesses that helped by donating goods and contributing money to purchase the items needed. “It’s rewarding to see their faces light up and the gratitude they show us, especially when we join them on Christmas morning,” said Castroman. “Next year, I’m shooting for 150 to 200 bags. I’m sure I can reach that goal with everyone’s help.” Her mother, Ivette Castroman, echoed similar sentiments. “This is a wonderful campaign she started in 2016, which shows you’re never too young to help the less fortunate and

make a difference in our community,” she said. “We are so proud of her.” Castroman’s crusade caught the attention of the local TV media. WSVN-Channel 7 interviewed her for a news segment dubbed “Hope and Healing,” a news feature on South Floridians helping less fortunate people during holidays. The news crew paid a visit to Castroman’s home to interview her and filmed her filling up the bags with the items collected for the homeless. The segment aired a week before Christmas which helped spread the word about the charity event. “Erika wants to thank everyone who donated to her cause, including the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, and Jim and Rosalind Hamilton, owners of the Miami Lakes Sports Shop for offering their business as the drop-off site for the items,” said her father Alex Castroman. “The family, friends and local businesses also contributed to this very worthy cause. Erika plans to continue this campaign every year and hopes to bring joy to as many people as possible, one stocking filled with love at a time.”

Program founder Leigh-Ann Buchanan created The Nyah Project Fellowship organization in 2014. The organization seeks to offer diverse youth from underserved communities with opportunities to experience the world as they define their own life’s purpose. Nyah’s core belief is that “Travel Awakens Leaders,” and through journeys to international destinations like Ghana, Costa Rica, South Africa and Namibia they have done just that. Barbier is an active member of the Pace’s Black Student Alliance, Future Business Leaders of America and he is Student Government president for the upcoming school year. Throughout his time at Pace, Barbier has constantly stood out as a leader and has been involved in service projects both in and out of school. Miami-Dade County Public School Board Chairwoman Perla Tabares Hantman recently received an Honorary Degree in Public Service from Doral College during a commencement ceremony at the Wastco Center on the campus of the University of Miami. The Miami Lakes resident was recognized for her vision, leadership, determination and contributions to the community. The college said Hantman has been an articulate advocate for education and how it can create positive change in the communities. “She has championed initiatives that improve public safety, enhance educational opportunities, and promote bilingual education,” Doral College administrators said. Hantman said she’s honored for the recognition and will continue to serve the education community. “I am extremely honored to Doral College for conferring this honorary degree upon me,”

she said. “It was an honor to have the opportunity to express my words of appreciation to the leadership of the college, faculty and students.”
