‘Feed the Homeless Meters’ now installed at 5 locations in town

On June 21, five “Feed the Homeless Meters,” to benefit the homeless in Miami-Dade County, were unveiled throughout various locations in Miami Lakes – one on Main Street, and the others at the Town’s main public parks. The installation of these meters are a result of work done by 7th grade students of the Civic Engagement Academy (CEA at Bob Graham Education Center. During the past school year, these students researched issues impacting local, state and national communities. One of these areas is homelessness and affordable housing. In November, the students were hosted by Camillus House CEO Hilda Fernandez on a tour where they saw first-hand issues related to homelessness. In January, the students spoke with Ron Book, chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, who became a mentor to them. As a result, they lobbied state legislators on expanding affordable housing opportunities throughout Florida as well as proactively seeking ways to help the homeless in local communities. The students became aware of Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust’s Feed the Homeless Meter program that had been in place for many years in various locations throughout the county, but not in Miami Lakes. The program takes repurposed former parking meters

The item supporting placement of one meter in each of the four main Town parks passed unanimously. Then, they met with Graham Companies officials, Andrea

Town receives $3.6 million grant to complete extension of N.W. 59 Avenue roadway The Town of Miami Lakes is a big winner for a multi-million dollar grant to complete a roadway extension project to connect commercial and industrial areas as well as build bike lanes and sidewalks. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) awarded Miami Lakes the County Incentive Grant Program for $3.6 million to help finance the N.W. 59 Avenue Roadway Extension and Redevelopment Project. Last year, the Town budgeted $4.2 million for the project which also may include RV and boat storage yards for residents. The program was created to provide grants to municipalities to improve transportation facility including transit, which is located on the State Highway System (SHS) or which relieves traffic congestion on the SHS. The N.W. 59 Avenue Project provides greater interconnectivity within the town’s boundaries and presents an opportunity to reposition the N.W. 151/153 streets corridor as a hub of

commercial activity. In addition, the project proposes a complete street network that will provide the muchneeded bike lanes and sidewalks that will allow school students to be able to safely access their schools through alternative modes of transportation. Miami Lakes thanked staff members Carmen Olazabal, chief of Capital Improvement Projects and Special Services’ Michelle Gonzalez, Senior Transportation Planner;, and Renee N. Jean, Grants Administrator; who all worked diligently on the grant proposal. “This is yet another example of why it's vitally important to foster good intergovernmental relations with all stakeholders,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “Thank you town staff for working hard on the grant application and presentation. Our entire transportation program is very close to being fully funded. Kudos to the entire Town Council for always staying focused on achieving our strategic goals.”

Rechichi and Anne Little, who were supportive of the project and agreed to a meter placement at the heavily trafficked area near the Main Street fountain. All five meters are now in place and ready to accept donations and the students will continue to work with the MiamiDade County Homeless Trust on the maintenance of the meters and collection of the funds raised. Community leaders and CEA students participated in the meter unveiling on June 21 including Cid, Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, Councilmembers Ceasar Mestre and Nelson Rodriguez, Ron Book, Hilda Fernandez, Andrea Rechichi, and Anne Little, as well as BGEC CEA teacher Jackie Hernandez and Bobcat Law Society president Ramiro Inguanzo. The Feed the Homeless meters are located at the playground areas at Royal Oaks Park, Picnic Park West, Optimist Park, the Spot Youth Censer, and near the Main Street foun- N.W. 59 AVENUE roadway extension project and surrounding projects are outlined in red above, made possible with the tain. $3.6 million grant received from FDOT.

Larry Nienaber, a 28-year veteran construction manager for The Graham Companies, was honored by his fellow employees on June 29 as he “hung up his boots” and officially retired. Unofficially, he can still be found on the third floor of The Graham Companies office where he is briefing other commercial construction managers on ongoing projects, and the history of those he has priced, designed, and constructed during his watch. Among the many major projects Nienaber managed during his career were all four of the Parkside office buildings in Business Park West, Laurel Court and Promenade office buildings in Town Center, Lakeside A and B commercial buildings in Business Park

West, conversion of the former American Express building for Walgreen’s and Alorica in Business Park West, the Attorney’s Title, Delta, and Schering Merck buildings in Business Park West, the Leroy Collins office building in Business Park West, Ana Mendez University, the Eagle Nest Center office and retail building in Town Center, and the renovations and expansion of the Cypress Village Shopping Center. Those projects, along with hundreds of renovations to existing buildings and offices, and many more tenant improvement projects, were successfully managed and completed within budgets by Nienaber during his extensive Miami Lakes career. Best wishes to a really nice guy and a true professional!

Family Dentistry and Orthodontics in M. Lakes PAGE 4

JULY 20, 2018

Dr. Nury Zurbano started practicing dentistry in Hialeah in 1978, but moved to the Town of Miami Lakes two decades ago to continue her passion. Zurbano married her husband in 1979 at Our Lady of the Lakes. Dr. Victor Christoph had met Zurbano while practicing in the late 70’s on Lincoln Road at Miami Beach. Fast forward to 2018, they both own and operate their own practice, Family Dentistry and Orthodontics of Miami Lakes located in the Cypress Village Professional Building at 7480 Fairway Drive, Suite 103. In addition to the husbandwife team, their daughter Dr. Kristina Marie Christoph recently joined the practice after her residency in Dallas. The family of dentists have roots all throughout Miami Lakes. Which is why, after eight years of being apart from her family and the town, the youngest Christoph decided to come back home.

THE MIAMI LAKER

“It’s wonderful to be back in the town that I hold near and dear to my heart,â€? Christoph said. “I have many childhood memories in Miami Lakes, like going to see movies in the summer at Main Street, then eating at Johnny Rockets, going trickor-treating at Main Street, shopping for the holidays‌.I also love the family-oriented, small town feel of Miami Lakes.â€? The Council of Scientific Affairs (COSA) of the American Association of Orthodontists recently awarded Christoph the Thomas M. Graber Award of Special Merit on May 6 at the annual meeting hosted in Washington D.C. The award is only given to four orthodontists each year from all around the country. The award was given to Christoph for her research in understanding better methods to improve the bone’s response to tooth movement. “This award embodies our practice’s mission,â€? explained

Christoph. “To provide our patients with the latest, highest standard of treatment based on sound research evidence. We strive to provide our patients with the very best care possible, and this requires either staying current or participating in the latest research. In addition to being a Dade Christian alum and operating a business in Miami Lakes, Christoph and her family also participate in local events. They’ve served as sponsors for the Our Lady of the Lakes Spring Festival as well as the Miami Lakes Spring Fling. They were one of the sponsors of the town’s Ice Cream Social in July, and are active members in the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce. Preview of July 17 Council meeting Full primary ballot facing By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff At its July 17 regular meeting, the Miami Lakes Town Council was expected to approve two ordinances, a host of resolutions and several new business items. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to complete the buildout of the town’s sidewalks network, requiring the repair of existing sidewalks damaged by construction work. The ordinance also calls for future sidewalks to be developed consistent with the town’s adopted Complete Streets plan. • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance to adopt and ratify the non ad-valorem special roll and special assessment district rates for the town’s Special Taxing Districts for Security Guard Gates and Lake Maintenance. The final assessments must be approved no later than September 15. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to tentatively keep the same rate for property taxes, 2.3353 mills, for the next fiscal year. The proposed rate is projected to generate at least $7.1 million in tax revenues. But the town may lose about

$350,000 if voters approve the additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption in November. However, a possible increase in property values may offset the lost of property tax revenues. Lawmakers will vote on a final tax rate and budget during two budget hearings scheduled for Tuesday, September 4 at 5:05 p.m. and Tuesday, September 18 at 6 p.m. at Miami Lakes Town Hall. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to adopt new initiatives, goals and revised priority of the 2025 Strategic Plan for Miami Lakes, which includes responding to the Parkland shooting massacre with reintroducing public safety a key component, revised an Achieve National Recognition as a model town for creativity, education, innovation and use of technology. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution requesting the county road impact fees accumulated by construction projects in Miami Lakes be used for the Palmetto Underpasses project. The project includes creating two new east-west connections at N.W. 146 Street and N.W. 159 Street under the Palmetto Expressway to enhance connectivity to mitigate gridlock along N.W. 154 Street.

• Council members were expected to approve a resolution instructing the town manager to apply for the Enterprise Florida Inc., and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Florida Job Growth Grant Fund Public Infrastructure Grant for the Miami Lakes Business Park East Infrastructure and Economic Development project. • Lawmakers were expected to authorize the town manager authorize the town manger to execute Federally Funded Subaward and Grant Agreements for FEMA’s Public Assistance Program for returning a disaster area to pre-disaster conditions. As part of the agreements, at least 75 percent of eligible cost is provided to primarily address the repair and restoration of public facilities and infrastructure which have been damaged or destroyed. For new business, Council members were expected to discuss and approve Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to look into adding a fire rescue unit at Miami-Dade Station 64 without any costs to residents; and Councilmember Tim Daubert’s request to change the designated council parking space at Town Hall to a Purple Heart space.

voters on Tuesday, Aug. 28 Next month, voters will head to the polls for Miami-Dade County’s primary election to choose candidates running for the U.S. Senate, Florida Governor, State Senate, Florida House of Representatives as well as positions in the Florida Cabinet. The winners in August will represent their respective parties in November’s general election in a showdown, as the Democrats try to gain control in Congress and the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee. The most closely watched race in November will be the U.S. Senate battle between Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott and incumbent Bill Nelson D-Florida, as the GOP and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committees are expected to spend the most money in history for a senate seat. But Scott must first get pass Rocky De La Fuente, an American businessman and exReform Party candidate for president in 2016, for the Republican nomination. For Florida Governor, U.S. Congressman Ron DeSantis and Agricultural Commissioner Adam Putnam are seeking the Republican nod in August to challenge Democratic candi-

dates vying for the seat including former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, former Miami Beach mayor Phillip Levine, billionaire businessman Jeff Greene, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gullum and businessman Chris King. For Florida House of Representatives, Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, a Republican, is vacating his seat to run in District 103, as he ran unopposed in the primary and faces either Democrats Cindy Polo or Rick Tapaia in November. State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., who is term limited, is running for the State Senate, as he ran unopposed in the primary and seeks the District 36 seat where he faces either David Perez or Imtiaz Ahmad Mohammad. Miami Lakes State Representative Jose Olivia, a Republican, drew no challengers and retains his seat for another term in Tallahassee, where he’s expected to become the next House speaker following the elections in November. Other State races, all contested include Agricultural Commissioner, Attorney General and Chief Financial Officer

Humans of Miami Lakes:

Yoga leader Claire Zovko By Megan Medina The Miami Laker Staff Back in the early 2000’s, Claire Zovko took her first yoga class while visiting her aunt in New York City. Zovko fell in love with yoga immediately. “It blew my mind,” explained Zovko. Zovko was always an athlete, and played basketball in college. As she was nearing the end of college, she knew her career in basketball was coming to an end. As fate would have it, yoga quickly became her new adventure. She loved the physical aspect yoga brought as well as the mental exposure. In 2016, Zovko purchased a yoga studio in Miami Lakes. Her main focus was on connecting with the community. She knew there was something special about Miami Lakes. At a town meeting in 2017, Zovko immediately proposed the idea of teaching yoga at the park for free. They loved the idea and soon enough Yoga at the Park was born. Her idea was a big hit as community members from Miami Lakes flocked to yoga classes. Zovko hopes to inspire confidence in her pupils, and to have them bring out that newfound motivation in their everyday life. Not only does she want people to connect with

CLAIRE ZOVKO yoga, she also wants them to connect with one another. Zovko is always looking for new ways to learn and stay upto-date on yoga, and was recently in India with her own yoga teacher because of her desire to learn and bring back some of that knowledge to her clientele. The Miami Lakes studio was previously known as 305 Yoga and now goes by Lighthouse Yoga and Wellness. The studio is located at 6175 N.W. 153 Street in suite 329. dent and founding member of GM’s automative strategy board. Additionally, the degree recognizes his continuing support for SJU, including his endowing graduate level scholarships. After retiring, he became just one of eight individual executives to receive GM’s Chairmans Lifetime Achievement Award. SJU previously awarded him the Outstanding Achievement Award, followed in 2009 with the president’s medal, its highest non-degree award. Since relocating to Miami Lakes in late 1991, he has been a member of Our Lady Of The Lakes parish. Nerod and his wife, Mary Ellen, reside in the Loch Lomond area of Miami Lakes.

Pace’s Vanessa Perez-Robles at Yale University’s Young Global Scholars Program By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Miami Lakes resident and Pace High School (Pace) senior Vanessa Perez-Robles, has returned from a collegiate experience at Yale University’s Yale Young Global Scholars Program. The aspiring engineer was selected among 6,000 applicants to attend the twoweek intensive summer program held June 17 through 30 on Yale’s historic campus in New Haven. “I was able to work alongside exceptionally bright students from over 130 countries around the world and 50 U.S. states,” expressed Perez-Robles. “I attended incredible seminars and lectures led by renowned Yale faculty.” Similar to the experience of a Yale University student, she resided in one of their historic residential colleges during the two weeks and enjoyed meals at the university dining halls. Of the nearly 1,800 total attendees, Perez-Robles was one of only 250 attendees specifically selected to attend the Applied Science and Engineering session. During the session, intended for students who have an interest in exploring and applying physical sciences, computer sciences and engineering, she had the unique opportunity to use the university facilities to conduct research. Her small research group worked on

VANESSA PEREZ-ROBLES studying sustainable energy and infrastructure. The focus of the group’s project was on the innovations and improvements of harnessing and storing solar energy. Perez-Robles says she is extremely grateful for the experience which allowed her to “explore the different facilities that Yale had to offer and build global academic bridges with the others of incredible academic calibers.” The Spartan honor student believes the program helped give focus to her future path in engineering, and she looks forward to working on her college applications during the upcoming school year.

Pace students attend Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Two students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) spent a few days of their break traveling to Boston for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Pace junior and Miami Lakes resident Diana Cao and sophomore Ulysses Del Pino served as delegates for the event which took place June 25 through 27. The congress was created by the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to help solve the problem that many of America’s highest potential students never fulfill their dream of entering the medical profession due to a lack resources, direction, selfconfidence or guidance. During the congress, they heard from leaders and top researchers in the medical field about cutting-edge advances and the future of medicine and medical technology. They were given advice by deans of Ivy League and top medical schools on what to expect in medical school and also witnessed inspiring stories told by real patients who are living medical

In Memoriam:

Sir Speedy’s Reuven Kanner Reuven Kanner, the longtime owner of Sir Speedy Printers in Miami Lakes, died peacefully on Sunday, July 1. Kanner was born in 1943 in Focsani, Romania. The younger of two children, he grew up in the countryside where his father, Nathan, was the village dentist, and his mother, Miriam, was devoted to him and his sister Rene. As a teenager, he emigrated with his father and sister to Israel where he served in the Israeli Army in both the SixDay War and the Yom Kipper War, both of which shaped the type of person he was in life – a determined fighter. He met his wife, Susana Kanner, in 1976 in Cali, Columbia. They moved to the U.S. the same year and started

their small business of operating a franchise of Sir Speedy Printers which they owned in Miami Lakes for 39 years. Kanner was incredibly dedicated to his work and embodied the entrepreneurial spirit, waking up most days at 5 a.m. to be the first one in the office. He is survived by his wife, Susy; daughter Nicole Kanner, son-in-law Josh Childs, and granddaughters Emily and Lucy Childs of Boston; son Jonathan of Orlando; and his sister Rene Marcovici of Jerusalem. Funeral services were held on July 3 at Beth David Memorial Gardens in Hollywood. The family suggested donations in his name to Jewish Community Services of South Florida’s Help Seniors Live Better at https://jscfl.org/donate.
