(Continued from Page 1) As a member of the Dolphins, he played in two Super Bowls and after nine seasons, finished with over 7,000 all-purpose yards and 32 touchdowns. He also served as a coach at FIU under former coach Don Strock. Rodriguez played high school football locally at Monsignor Pace before earning a scholarship to the University of Miami. There, he was a member of the 2001 National Championship team. He was a two-year starter for the Hurricanes and after a brief stint in the NFL, he transitioned into coaching. After spending time at Mississippi as a graduate assistant, he would coach at Bryant College and Fordham University, and has been back at the University of Miami since 2015, where he currently serves as director of Player Development for the defense, and he is the keeper of the famed “Turnover Chain.” Graham was known as a pioneer in Miami Lakes in the sports of golf, badminton, horseback riding and girls’ athletics of all ranges. He was a longtime resident of Miami Lakes and was a member of the 1942 State of Florida Championship basketball team at Miami Senior High. other year. Graham was also credited with promoting golf to youth, high school and college levels and also was responsible for providing the youth of Miami Lakes with the chance to learn how to ride horses early in the inception of the town. Graham died in 2009 at 84. Sidner played volleyball locally at Hialeah Miami Lakes high school and attended the University of Florida, where she led the Gators to the NCAA Final Four in volleyball. She was a member of regional championship teams in high school and once served out a 150 game before the volleyball scoring changed in high school, which was a rare feat. Since graduating she has been a valued member of CNN News covering numerous national and international stories including reporting from war zones. Through it all she still identifies Miami Lakes as her hometown. Hamilton is a longtime resident and member of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club. He has dedicated most of his life to helping kids excel in sports and in the classroom. Since joining the Optimists in 1973, he has held every position including president, vice-president, board member, commissioner, and coach. All this while helping the club reach its goals by offering kids a chance to play sports, while their parents and other spectators cheer for them and improve their academics. His devotion to his volunteer work, and his lifelong dedication has earned him the highest honor in recreation and sports.

Zoning approved for American Dream, Graham projects PAGE 4

JUNE 1, 2018

After three years of review by the Miami Dade County Planning Staff and 13 other agencies, including the South Florida Regional Planning Council, and a nine hour hearing, The American Dream Miami (ADM) entertainment and retail project to be located just east of the Turnpike, west of I-75 and north of N.W. 180 Street, was approved by the Miami Dade Board of County Commissioners by an 11-1 vote. The approval entailed a change in the Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP) designation from Industrial and Office to Business and Office and the adoption of the Retail Entertainment District Planned Area Development (REDPAD) zoning district. This unique development, estimated to cost over $4 billion, is being proposed by the owners of the Mall of America on 174 acres. The project is planned for 3.5 million square feet of retail, 1.5 million of entertainment and 2,000 hotel rooms. The entertainment portion of ADM will include a theme park, an indoor ski slope, and ice climbing wall, an indoor water park, observation wheel, a submarine lake with sea life, an art deco village with performance halls, bowling alley,

an 80,000 square foot KidZania, and a lake in the center surrounded by 75-100 restaurants. While legally committed to bring at least 7,500 permanent jobs, the potential for direct and indirect employment is closer to 25,000. The project is slated to be completed by 2023. Concerned about the project’s impact on the local roadway network, Commissioners Pepe Diaz and Commission Chair Esteban Bovo Jr. pressed hard for assurance that all impacts will be addressed and that all roadway and transit improvements required be in place before the project is permitted to open. In addition to the extensive list of staff recommended roadways to be improved, the Commission also added the expansion of Miami Gardens Drive to six lanes from I-75 to N.W. 57 Avenue and the inclusion of a dedicated transit lane to connect to the proposed Smart Plan corridor. “With the amendment’s approval, the Board of County Commissioners took steps toward not repeating the sins of the past and demanding real solutions that will make our County a community in the future” Bovo said. The developers will be responsible for approximately

$218 million in offsite roadway improvements in addition to the estimated $58 million in road impact fees that must be paid. The added capacity will actually exceed the additional traffic impacts. Busses and facilities for expanded transit service will also be required, to be funded by the developer. The project will also generate approximately $8 million per year for the Dade County Public School District. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and Town Manager Alex Rey attended the meeting and expressed their concerns about how this project could impact Miami Lakes and insisted that the significant road impact fee dollars raised be spent locally and specifically on several projects planned in Miami Lakes. After the meeting, Cid said “I expressed the Town’s concern over the impact this project will have on our roadways. We are currently working with MiamiDade County to implement road impact fees derived from this project in our community that will enhance our current infrastructure.” The second approval by a 91 vote was to change the Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP) from Industrial and Office to Business and Office and the adop-

tion of the Employment Center Planned Area Development (ECPAD) zoning district on the 337 acre parcel owned by The Graham Companies located south of N.W. 180 street, east of the Turnpike, west of I-75 and north of N.W. 170 street. This change will allow the development of a mixed use community that will consist of approximately 3 million square feet of business and office, 1 million square feet of retail and 2,000 rental units. This is a change from the previous plans for this property to be devel-

oped as a large scale industrial park. This development will be completed over a long period of time and not commence until a new interchange has been completed at N.W. 170 street and the Turnpike, and the surrounding adjacent roadways are in place. Representatives of The Graham Companies have said they look forward to creating a special place that will benefit from the lessons learned in Miami Lakes.

Garcia brothers report successful ‘Give a Ball, Spread Love’ drive

Carlos and Kevin Garcia are life-long Miami Lakes residents who have a passion for basketball and helping others. The Give a Ball, Spread the Love campaign started in 2013 to give back to the community by collecting basketballs for the kids at the Overtown Youth Center. The Garcia brothers, who both play for basketball teams, felt that spreading their love of basketball and keeping kids busy and active was all-around positive for the children. This year, they reached out to classmates, family, friends and local businesses and coordinated drop boxes at their school and the Town of Miami Lakes. Together with the support of the community, they were successful in collecting over 100 new basketballs in 2018. “The outpouring of support towards this cause is greatly appreciated,” said Gloria Garcia, the boys’ mother. “We are very humbled by all who helped make this small effort to give back a success.” On April 28, along with some classmates, the boys delivered and donated the basketballs at the Overtown Youth Center and had an opportunity to play a game with some of the children in the program. This was by far the most rewarding part of the campaign, it was a wonderful experience to see the kids interact and come

Charlie DeLucca Jr., the ‘godfather’ of Fla. Junior Golf By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff At 76 years-old, Charlie DeLucca Jr., spent most of his entire life teaching kids how to play golf and life-learning skills for children with special needs. He welcomed kids who were chased off other golf courses and started the Dade Amateur Golf Association’s junior program at the former Miami Lakes Country Club (now Shula’s Golf Club) in 1967. “Kids were not allowed to play golf because most courses were private,” said DeLucca. “We had 152 kids from Palm Beach to Monroe counties when we started the program. It was a different time back in those days. But we built a junior golf program which was probably the best ever.” On May 11, DeLucca perhaps received the epitome of a public service honor when he received the Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award during the Orange Bowl Food and Wine Celebration at the Broward County Convention Center. The award recognizes an

individual who has made extraordinary efforts to promote and enhance social conditions around them in uncharted ways, and whose contributions have been outstanding, unique and significantly impacted the South Florida Community. “I was tremendously honored,” DeLucca said. “I didn’t expect it at all, and to compare myself to Keith Dribble, that’s an honor itself.” Called the godfather of South Florida junior golf and a longtime champion of people with disabilities including the Special Olympics, DeLucca organized the first Doral Public Junior tournament more than 30 years ago as a tuneup for the Orange Bowl Junior Golf Invitation. Junior golfers, boys and girls from ages 4 to 18 from 36 nations, compete annually in the event at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. The long time Miami Lakes resident has been manager and operator of International Links at the City of Miami MelReese Golf Course since 2004, and named the junior golf program the First Tee Miami.

There, he, his son, Charlie DeLucca III, and Carlos Rodriguez among other staff members, run about 20 programs a year for 5,000 kids including those with disabilities, not only for golf but educational programs including tutoring, college prep courses and workout programs. He said the Special Olympics kids are near and dear to his heart, even naming the Sandra DeLucca Development Center after his late daughter. He said 650 kids participate in the golf programs and compete to determine who advances to the state wide Special Olympics. Miami Lakes lawyer Phil Rarick hosts free seminars in June, July

Long time Miami Lakes attorney Phil Rarick announced that his law firm will be holding two free seminars for local business owners and professionals this summer. The first seminar on June 21 will focus on protecting families and businesses from court intervention in the event of a mental incapacity or death. The second seminar on July 26 will discuss advanced asset protection strategies for the professional. Both seminars will be held in the law firm’s offices from 7 to 8 p.m. at 6500 Cowpen Road, Suite 204, in Miami Lakes. “Small business owners must

try to grow their business in an often hostile legal environment,” Rarick said. “These owners need to take maximum advantage of Florida laws, and sometimes laws in other states, to protect them from personal liability. Such planning needs to be done now - before legal threats arise,” he added. Rarick said the statistics are alarming. For example, more than 60 percent of doctors over the age of 55 have been sued at least once, according to a new survey by the American Medical Association. “Regardless of how good a doctor you are, unfortunately, you need to plan for such a law-

suit,” he said. Rarick has been practicing as an estate planning attorney in Miami Lakes for over 25 years and is the founder of the law firm Rarick & Beskin. He is an advocate for helping small business owners grow, and is a frequent speaker on legal issues that may limit growth. Rarick is past president of the Miami Lakes Bar Association and active in local community events. Persons interested in attending the seminars may contact Christy at 305-556-5209, or by email at info@raricklaw.com.

Duke & Dutchess celebrates ‘Furrty’ years PAGE 14

THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Duke and Dutchess is celebrating 40 years of serving the furry residents of Miami Lakes. Best friends Lori Wetzel and Randi Rosenson currently own and operate the pet grooming salon located at 7345 Miami Lakes Drive in the Cypress Village Shopping Center. The salon first opened in 1977, long before Miami Lakes even became an incorporated town. It all started with Rosenson’s mother, Peggy. Since she was 12-years-old, Rosenson worked alongside her mother until she was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 1993. “My mom chose Miami Lakes because she wanted that DUKE & DUTCHESS PET SALON owners Randi Rosenson hometown feel, and she stuck (left), store greeter Nacho, and Lori Wetzel. with it. She didn’t want to open at Westland Mall and become part of that crowd, and she wanted to do her own thing,” explained Rosenson. “She got to know everybody.” Wetzel had known Rosenson through a mutual friend, and wanted to help her through this particularly difficult time. Wetzel officially bought the store from Rosenson in 1995, and the two friends have become inseparable ever since. They both have been through loss, marriages and the birth of

their children together. In fact, Wetzel even reconnected with an old flame from high school during a particularly busy day; The old high school sweethearts were eventually married. “God works in mysterious ways sometimes. We had our kids right around the same time of each other, we went through the baby stage together,” Rosenson said. “I lost my husband to cancer, she lost hers through divorce, so that bonded us! The ties are there,” Wetzel said. For being in business for 40 years, Wetzel and Rosenson have learned a lot. Although four decades have passed since the pet salon first opened, time has stood still in the walls of the business. In fact, there have been several constants through the years. “Personal attention,” Wetzel said. “And consistency,” added Rosenson. “We have Randi cutting hair, or I’ve been cutting the hair for 40 years. You’re not going to have someone else cutting hair,” explained Wetzel. “You’ll always see the same faces.” Rosenson concluded. When asked about what they’ve learned throughout their

time running the business, they both looked at each other and took a deep sigh. “A lot,” they both laughed. “Patience, and that sometimes old school is the best way,” Rosenson said. “We talk to you, fill out cards,” interjected Wetzel. “We have a personal relationship with our clients,” remarked Rosenson. Families have been coming to the salon for years with their fur babies, and it’s even come to the point where different generations have decided to take their pets over to Rosenson and Wetzel. “Clients who came here before had children, and now their children are having children, and they’re still coming here. It’s the coolest thing. you don’t see that anymore,” Rosenson said. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M. They are also open Saturdays from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M. and are closed Sundays. For more information about Duke and Duchess Pet Grooming, call (305)821-1542. “We are very lucky people,” Wetzel said. “Very lucky,” agreed Rosenson.

STU head baseball coach Jorge Perez named Sun Conference Coach of Year

St. Thomas University head baseball coach Jorge Perez has been named the 2018 Sun Conference Baseball Coach of the Year during an on-field ceremony at The Sun Conference Championships at the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. Perez led the Bobcats to a school record 49 regular season wins and the best regular-season winning percentage (.907) in school history. The 49 wins breaks the previous record of 45 regular-season wins by the 1998 Bobcats that went on to set the school record for overall wins (54), including postseason. St. Thomas, under the leadership of Perez, went 22-2 in Sun Conference play to win the regular season conference championship and earn the number one seed at this weekend's Sun Conference Championship Tournament. The Bobcats were red hot down the stretch of the season, winning 36 of their last 38 games dating back to March 1st. The hot streak included a win streak of 18 games from March 23 to April 20. In his 10th season as head coach of the Bobcats, Perez currently holds a career record of 363-218. Earlier this season, Perez was named to the coaching staff of USA Baseball's 2018 Collegiate National Team where he will be an assistant coach and first base coach under

JORGE PEREZ LSU head coach and St. Thomas University Sports Hall of Famer Paul Mainieri. Perez has led the Bobcats to six appearances in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, including a runner up finish at the NAIA World Series in 2015 – the best finish in school history. With a 50-5 record, this year's team is currently ranked no. 2 nationally by Perfect Game and no. 3 in the NAIA Coaches Top-25 Poll. Perez headlined a banner day for Bobcat award winners as eight Bobcats received FirstTeam All-Conference honors highlighted by Sun Conference Player of the Year Nelson Mompierre. Three STU players were named Second-Team AllConference, while five studentathletes were named Academic All-Conference.

Pace Class of 2018 celebrates Baccalaureate Mass, graduation PAGE 22

JUNE 1, 2018

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School (Pace) celebrated the achievements of its Class of 2018 with the traditional Baccalaureate Mass held on May 20. Although initially planned to take place at Saint Bonaventure Catholic Church, the persistent rain caused flooding in the area and arrangements were quickly made to hold the mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Pace legacy was everpresent, as Reverend Paul Vuturo celebrated the afternoon service along with Father Bryan Garcia, a Class of 2006 Pace alumnus. With much pride, the two were joined by recently ordained priest and Class of 2009 Pace graduate, Father Matthew Gomez. Altar servers for the mass were Father Gomez’s siblings Alex Gomez (Class of 2011) and Mark Gomez (Class of 2013.) Each senior was presented with a baccalaureate medal by Reverend Vuturo and principal Ana Garcia. Members of the Class of 2018 brought up offertory gifts to the altar such as a Spartan helmet, cheerleading pompoms, a baseball glove and a cross to symbolize their time spent at Pace. Father Gomez gave a touching testimony to the class about how his journey at Pace pre-

pared him in every way for the road he chose in life. He reminded them that Pace would forever be their home and that as Spartans they would forever have a family in times of joy or in times of trouble. Senior class president, Grace Li addressed the class and acknowledged the members of the Pace family who offered their constant support throughout the four years of high school. As the celebrants processed out of the church, they took a moment to pose for a picture with the Class of 2018 and Garcia, a Class of 1980 Pace alumnae. As a closing for the day's events, the class and their families were able to enjoy a photo slideshow showcasing the cherished memories the graduates had created since their freshman

Goleman High recognized for student attendance score

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho recognized Barbara Goleman High for ranking third among 39 local high schools with a 93.79 percent for student attendance for the third grading period of the 2017-2018 school year. “This outstanding achievement is the result of your exemplary efforts, as well as those of your staff, your students, and your school community,” Carvalho said in a letter to Goleman’s principal Joaquin Hernandez. “Congratulations on a job well done. I encourage you to continue your efforts to promote outstanding student attendance at your school in the future.” Goleman High will be bigger and better for the 2018-2019

school year. The school will be converted to a Mega Magnet program thanks to Miami-Dade County Public School Board chairwoman Perla Tabares-Hantman. She said a $15 million federal grant over the next five years allows the school district to enhance education opportunities for students at the highest levels of academic achievement with Goleman leading the way with the Mega Magnet program. Unlike a traditional Magnet program, the Mega Magnet program teaches more than a set of skills, as students have a new way of looking at the work with a creative place where students feel safe and are enthusiastic about learning and participating in school activities.

year. The Class of 2018 seniors finished their high school years at Pace’s 55th Annual Commencement Exercise on May 25 at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. Senior Rose Delva gave a light hearted and spirited farewell address to the class, reminiscing about the memories made, the lessons learned and the legacy they will leave among the walls of Monsignor Edward Pace High School for the future generations of Spartans. In an address by Garcia, she challenged the graduates to carry love, joy, compassion and gratitude along their future journeys. She also recognized the achievements of the class for having received an outstanding $14.6 million in combined aca- M-DCPS Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and teachers at demic scholarships. Bob Graham Edu. Center’s Autism Unit presents a ‘Friendship Show’ with all grade levels performing

The Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) Autism Unit students put on a heart-warming show for parents, teachers, administrators and friends. The show’s theme was “Friendship,” and it included thoughtful performances by grade levels Kindergarten through eighth grade. The show opened with Tabitha Stanley-William’s second and third grade class welcoming the audience with the “Hello” song. Tabitha Rodriguez’s Kindergarten class followed with their favorite morning meeting song, “I Like Potatoes.” Next in the program was Vivian Jerry’s first grade class singing “The Happy Song.” Yareli Dominguez’s students were next on stage with a very energetic interpretation of “Walking on Sunshine.”

Erika Hurtado's fifth grade class made the crowd laugh with a hilarious comedy segment. Finally, the show culminated with a heartfelt rendition of the song “Ben,” by Michael Jackson. Karina Marin’s third and fourth grade students and Hurtado’s class were joined on stage by Lusila Garcia’s fifth grade gifted students. The fifth grade gifted students had been working closely with the Autism Units throughout the school year to help increase social skill development and autism acceptance. It was an event that captivated parents and teachers alike with a great display of talent and a beautiful reminder that all students are deserving of friendship and an opportunity to shine.

Hialeah Miami Lakes Project Citizen team named state champs

Hialeah Miami Lakes High’s Project Citizen team was crowned state champions for 2018 during the We the People competition in Tallahassee, Florida, and is headed to the national championship on the West Coast. The team worked cooperatively to identify a public policy problem in the students’ community, researched it and evaluated alternative solutions in the form of a public policy. The students subject was on the rise of HIV/AIDS in Florida. According to the students, Miami-Dade County ranks No. 1 in the nation with new HIV infection rates followed by Broward County. Though the issue was controversial, the students felt compelled to address the issue, especially wondering that their age group (from 13 to early adulthood) make up the group of the highest rate of new infections. “As a result of this fact, along with months of research regarding policy solutions aimed at HIV’s prevalence, the students decided an Inclusive Health

Some of the fifth grade students at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) participated in the first ever “We the People” Competition in the elementary grades. This competition is usually offered at the middle and high school level, but this year the school district decided to have the first ever set of Mock Trail Hearings for elementary students. Fourth graders at Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) in a coteaching inclusion class led by teachers Gianinna Lombardi and Evelyn Garrastazu decided to enter a contest, the Above and “Bee"yond Teacher Essay Contest in Miami-Dade County to showcase their teachers. If they won, they would be rewarded $500 for needed classroom items, and their class would receive breakfast at Applebee's. It was a glorious day when these students found out that they were the winners, and they were even more excited when they attended the function. The

winning essay was written by Isabella Nordo. She embellished on how effectively structured and fun her class was. She also wrote about how she finally learned how to write an essay, and how the teachers have planned surprises for students throughout the year. The event was “Red Carpet” themed, and every student was truly a star as each of them were called up individually to receive their end-of-the-year awards. It was standing room only at Applebee's to teary-eyed parents, as each child was celebrated for achievements earned during the year.
