MONSIGNOR EDWARD PACEʼS flag football team won the district championship last week with a 28-0 shut out victory over Barbara Goleman. The Spartans defeated Miami Norland High, 26-0, in the district semifinal, and Mater Lakes Academy in the quarterfinals. A Look Inside:

By Daniel Gonzalez III Special to The Miami Laker Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) is the best magnet school in the country according to the Magnet Schools of America (MSA). Of the nearly 4,400 magnet schools across the country, MLEC received the top award at the annual National MSA Conference. “Winning the prestigious Magnet Schools of America award is another example of Miami-Dade’s belief that all children have the potential to soar to extraordinary academic heights when they are exposed to curriculum that is cuttingedge and robust,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. MSA is a non-profit organization that works with schools across the country to promote and encourage learning and equity including: Racial and economic diversity, immersion programming, civil rights and academic excellence. Each year, the organization honors the best schools, programs and educators in the country. A first for Miami-Dade County Public Schools “No

other school in the District has achieved this,” Dr. Robert Strickland, administrative director of Choice and Parental Options told the group of administrators, teachers and students present at the School Board building to celebrate the award. MLEC is the first school in Miami-Dade County to have earned the most prestigious award, the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Magnet School of Merit award. The award highlights the quality of a magnet school’s foundational pillars: Academic standards, curriculum innovation, parent and community involvement, specialized teaching and diversity. “We focus on all the pillars,” said assistant principal Michael Windisch. “For example, one of the main pillars of a magnet school is diversity and we make sure our school attracts students of different cultures, socioeconomic statuses and varying abilities.” In fact, MLEC’s students originate from over 33 countries and speak over 11 different languages at home. They commute every morning from as far north as Broward County and as far south as Homestead from 17 different zip codes for the chance to earn industry certifications, obtain career and technical training while also taking Advanced Placement and Cambridge courses. “We have 23 unique career pathways that allow students to earn over 32 industry certifications.” said Beatriz Sears, vice principal. “Almost every student graduates from MLEC with not only a highschool diploma, but an industry certification and the skills needed to be successful in their chosen college and career.” Success is a team effort.

“This outstanding achievement honors and celebrates the dedication of MLEC’s teachers and administrators who provide students with a rigorous, wellplanned education in a field of their choice, aptly preparing them for college and career,” said School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman. MLEC underwent a lengthy application process, and advanced through several rounds. Before the ultimate test, a school-site visit. “The team walked the halls of MLEC, they visited classrooms across campus. They met with parents, community partners and students and saw firsthand what MLEC does every day,” said principal Lourdes Diaz. “This award validates the hard work and dedication of our teachers and 1,200 students.”

107 Taste brings Asian-fusion style dining now on Main Street By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff For months many have wondered what the orange sign of “107 Taste” meant and when it was opening. On March 27 the restaurant made its soft opening followed by a ribbon cutting on April 24, joined by Mayor Manny Cid. Located at 6705 Main Street, 107 Taste brings a unique Asian-fusion style to The Town of Miami Lakes. There is nothing else like this around town. Husband and wife owners Tingjun Lei and Yu Bi first came up with this concept in 2016 when they opened their first location near Florida International University (FIU). The name comes from their location by FIU which is on 107 Avenue. Asian-fusion is a mix of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Asian food. Bi is very creative and comes up with different twists on traditional food items. The trendy and tasty food items are all made in house as well as homemade desserts. Some menu options can only be found at 107 Taste. Apart from their unique menu, 107 Taste is not just a regular restaurant where you eat and leave. They want guests to truly enjoy their time there and make it an experience. They hope people go in and order their

Their concept doesn’t include “fixed” menu times because they want guests to come in and truly enjoy themselves without feeling rushed. Tingjun and Bi saw the need for a restaurant of this type in Miami Lakes. “I believe Miami Lakes needs better food, the people deserve better tasting food” explained Tingjun. This made Miami Lakes an ideal

location for their next restaurant. They plan on opening another 107 Taste location in Plantation by the end of this year. 107 Taste will be open seven days a week, Monday Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sundays noon - 10:30 p.m. They will offer Ubereats as well as Postmates. Local business A&P Air Conditioning (A&P) announced on April 18 that the company’s officers have established a $25,000 endowment in perpetuity for Florida International University’s (FIU) College of Engineering and Computing for first-generation students majoring in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering. All scholarships awarded will be matched by the State of Florida’s First-Generation Matching Grant Program. Both A&P’s president, Adrian Gonzalez and vice president, Meyer Sarshalom are first-generation graduates of FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing. They have both been residents of Miami Lakes for over 30 years. The A&P First Generation Scholarship for Future Engineers Endowment was signed by A&P and FIU Dean John L. Volakis at the school’s 2019 Spring Senior Design Showcase where both Gonzalez and Sarshalom served as judges. “We originally planned to support one scholarship to give a future engineer in our commu-

nity the same opportunity we had to be the first generation in our families to attend college” said Sarshalom. “Then we learned that by establishing an endowment instead, our contribution would remain in perpetuity, be matched by the state, and help so many more students. We never imagined that a small, local business like ours could make this kind of impact.” Gonzalez added, “We say my father founded A&P on his family values. Fifty years ago at the age of 14, his parents placed him on a plane alone from Cuba hoping for a better opportunity for him. Although he never attended college, he ensured that each of his four children did. “We’re all FIU Golden Panthers. We dedicate this endowment to our dad, Ino Gonzalez and our grandparents for all their hard work and sacrifice, to our families and children that they may continue to support education and the community we call home, and to the many scholars to come through this program.”

Salata Salad Kitchen kicks off at grand opening THE MIAMI LAKER

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Salata Salad Kitchen, located at 7491 Miami Lakes Drive in the Cypress Village Shopping Center, celebrated its grand opening on April 25. Joined by hundreds of guests including Mayor Manny Cid and Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez. This is the first Salata restaurant in Miami and just the second in Florida. Salata first began in Texas. Founders Berge Simonian and Tony Kyoumjian saw that people were very interested in salads and that is when Salata was born. Salata is not your average salad bar, it is a new concept salad bar where you build your own salad and customize it with over 50 toppings to choose from. All of the dressings are signature, they can’t be bought anywhere. Salata doesn’t have a set menu, it has a display that shows the different prices in sizes and add-ons. The restaurant offer salads and wraps with so many options for protein as well. There is also have a “tea tap” section which looks interesting because it looks like beer on tap, instead it has different teas as well as lemonades. The Salata team takes pride in the way they present themselves. Everything is measured to a tee and you can expect that at any Salata you visit. They have carefully created an atmos-

phere like no other. Everything that goes out is made daily, employees arrive early each morning to cook everything. They have separate work stations so that there is no cross contamination between the gluten free food and non gluten free foods. The team allows customers to sample everything because they want to make sure the customer likes what they’re eating. Each item has the name and calorie count, it also displays whether it is vegan or gluten free. They have a large see-through glass that allows customers to see each product without being able to touch it or talk over it, to prevent contamination. For many employees, Salata is a family. They love going to work and truly feel like their job is in a family style environment. Franchise owner Nabeel Ansaari plans on opening 20 more Salata’s in Florida. He choose Miami Lakes because it is a growing community and he thought it would fit in with the people around town. Twenty-five percent of the profits from the grand opening were donated to The Education Fund. There was also an appearance from representatives of the Orange Bowl and the Orange Bowl mascot, Obie. Salata in Miami Lakes is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information call (305) 631-2378.

Town announces changes in landscape maintenance to restrict use of glyphosate

All landscape maintenance vendors at Town of Miami Lakes park properties, right of ways, medians, cul de sacs and landscape areas are no longer utilizing products containing glyphosate as of April 1, according to a news release from the town. An initiative proposed by Councilmember Jeffrey Rodriguez to restrict the use of this product due to the evidence about the dangerous exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides was discussed at the December 2018 council meeting. The vendors, properties managed and new products being used include: • Superior Landscape (pocket parks, right of ways and medi-

ans) has transitioned to Tribune. • SFM (beach parks) has transitioned to Tribune. • VisualScape (Miami Lakes Picnic Park West and East) has transitioned to Tribune. • BrightView (Miami Lakes Optimist Park and Landscape/ Cul De Sac areas) has transitioned to Finale. • Greensource (Royal Oaks Park) has transitioned to Scythe (AI-Pelargonic Acid). The fiscal impact for this town-wide transition is approximately $3,000 annually. The town plans to incorporate language in future contracts restricting the use of Glyphosatebased produces for any future solicitations for landscape maintenance areas.

Neat Streets $37K grant will aid new West Lake trees

In an effort to expand MiamiDade County’s tree canopy by leveraging local resources, Neat Streets Miami awarded the Town of Miami Lakes a Street Tree Matching Grant in the amount of $37,422.55 for the Miami Lakes West Lake Reforestation Phase 3 Project. In its fourth year, Neat Streets Miami’s street tree program awarded 15 organizations matching grants to advance the Million Trees initiative, a community-wide effort to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy for the

county. Utilizing previous Neat Streets Matching Grants, Miami Lakes completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 West Lakes Reforestation projects. The Phase 3 area now has a mix of canopy including palms, invasive and exotic trees that are not consistent with the tree canopy throughout the town. The Phase 3 goal is to plant an estimated 114 trees from a variety of species and incorporating a tree planting and removal program to add a uniform canopy to an area that needs canopy trees.

Miami Lakes Chamber hosts Carlos Garrido at May 8 luncheon

To reserve contact Marta Diaz at 305-556-2212, or email mdiaz@miamilakeschamber.com. Deadline to reserve a table is Friday, May 3, at noon. 6766 Main Street. Part of the crowd was the play writer himself, Michael McKeever. 37 Postcards is not just a funny show about a family that seems to be losing their minds during the past eight years. The show reveals so much more than meets the eye. Upon Avery’s return home, nothing is as he remembers. Although he is certain his family is crazy, he soon realizes why they’re acting the way they are. Through several turns of events and some realization the craziness of Avery’s family actually seems to be normal. All families have their “normal” even if it doesn’t appear that way to others as Avery’s fiancé

soon realizes. Sometimes you just need to go home and everything will work itself out. The cast of 37 Postcards seemed like a real family on and off stage. Their chemistry translated well through their performance on stage. 37 Postcards runs through May 19, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students, seniors and military personnel. Theatre League and Industry tickets are $20 with I.D. at the door. Tickets may be purchased in AVERY (middle) is attempting to demonstrate to his mother advance at www.mainstreet- (left) that the house is titled while his fiancé Gillian (right) has players.com, or at the door an had enough of the craziness. hour before show time. Town’s P&Z Board addresses overnight parking THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Planning and Zoning Board approved an ordinance which prohibits overnight street parking for commercial vehicles within the town’s rights-of-way adjacent to residential neighborhoods, parks and government buildings, indicating they create hazardous conditions by blocking visibility for other motorists and encroach onto travel lanes and sidewalks. At last month’s Planning and Zoning hearing, the board gave its unanimous consent for the proposed measure following Councilmember Marylin Ruano’s concern that large commercial vehicles were parking overnight in residential areas and near recreational facilities

and causing problems for residents. The town initially allowed a few overnight parking spots for commercial vehicles in residential areas and near the parks until town officials can create a long term solution like a storage area, but the parking escalated to the point where residents took matters into their own hands by calling a tow truck. The ordinance bans parking in any right-of-way abutting either a residential district or a government facility that contains a park, public playground, library, fire station and police station. The proposed ordinance will go before Miami Lakes council members for their initial approval on May 14. In other action, the Planning

and Zoning board delayed a zoning variance for a tutoring and therapy facility for students with special needs at 15600 N.W. 67 Avenue until the owner can furnish expert testimony and letters from teachers and parents to support the idea that an indoor playground is adequate to the needs of the students as opposed to outdoor activities. The applicant, Jenny Espinosa, said Tutor Me provides education and therapy activities for 40 students with autism spectrum and other related disorders to be housed inside a 94,225 square foot lot between the intersections of N.W. 67th Avenue and Bull Run and New Barn Road. She said an outdoor playground constitutes an overstim-

The C-USA honorees, which were announced by the league office, were Naomi Ruele (Swimmer of the Year), Maha Gouda (Diver of the Year), Holly Shepherd (Freshman Swimmer of the Year) and Kaitlyn Fredericks (Freshman Diver of the Year). “I am very proud of this group of ladies. They represent FIU and our program well. The hard work and discipline it takes to excel in swimming and diving is immense and these four ladies are no exception,” said swimming head coach Randy Horner. It was another remarkable year for the FIU swimming and diving team. For the fifthstraight year, the Panthers were crowned conference champions making them the winningest program at FIU. FIU also closed out its season with a top three finish at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships. The diving program made history when Gouda became just the second All-American for the Panthers after finishing

eighth overall in the 1meter platform at the N C A A Championships. A fourth and final run for senior Ruele at the NCAA RUELE was punctuated with a new school record and the strongest run of her career. With the honor, Ruele has now tied the league record for winning GOUDA C - U S A Swimmer of the Year after picking it up for a third time. Reflecting on her Panther career, Ruele owns three individual school records in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke. In addition, she is a part of four record-holding relays: 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. A trio of freshmen also made the list and as described by Horner, there is an impressive strength in what those rookies can do. “The freshman class in gener-

al is a prog r a m strength. I love having three of them on the list, our future is looking very bright,” he said. Described SHEPHERD as perfectionist and a great teammate, Fredericks walks away from her freshman campaign being named C - U S A Freshman FREDERICKS Diver of the Year. “She is a quality diver and her personality and ability to adapt to change brings a fun dynamic to the team," said head diving coach Rio Ramirez. Last but not least, Shepherd the recipient of the C-USA Freshman Swimmer of the Year superlative as she made an impressive run during the final months of competition. Shepherd was a standout athlete at the C-USA Championships where she picked up three medals. “I am excited for all she will accomplish at FIU,” Horner added.

Goleman and American softball teams seek titles Barbara Goleman High’s softball team finished the regular season with a 19-1 overall record including 10-1 in district competition. The Gators are seeking to take a bite out of their opponents during the postseason. The Gators’ only loss came at the hands of Miami Springs, a 14-0 defeat in March as the Golden Hawks avenged their 43 season opener against Goleman in February. The two teams are preparing for the district tournament and

could face each other in the rubber match for the division championship. Another local high school team playing in a different district is also looking forward to the playoffs. American High’s softball team is 12-3, 7-0 in district, as the Patriots are seeking their fifth consecutive district championship. Hialeah Gardens, North Miami, Hialeah and Krop are standing in American’s way to claim the division title.

FIU’s Logan Allen named USA Conference Pitcher of the Week After being named to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List last week, Florida International University’s (FIU) Logan Allen was named Conference USA's Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced during a news conference. Allen recently had a career night striking out 13 Southern Miss batters over six innings of three-run ball in the 6-4 Panthers’ victory. The 13 strikeouts are a career-best. The midseason All-American has posted a 1.81 ERA on the season and 85 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched for a 13.99 strikeouts-per-nine-innings mark which ranks seventh in the country and betters the next best pitcher in C-USA by almost two strikeouts. April 17 in the Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) gymnasium. This is the third year that the HML community has celebrated academics with a fun, interactive family night and this year’s event was the largest yet. The Mathematics, Science, ELA, Social Studies, Technology, Robotics, Student Services and Fine Arts departments collaborated for a Harry Potter themed night. The event was free to all stu-

attending. The event consisted of 15 interactive stations hosted by HML teachers and provided participants with hands-on learning and innovative fun throughout the night. Stations included a Robotics Maze, Scavenger Hunt, Life Size Jenga Challenge, DNA and Anatomy Activities and a Chemistry demonstration that taught students the process of making ice cream using dry ice along with other ingredients.

The Miami Lakes K-8 (MLK8) Center Chess Club finished off a great year of strategic competition at the final District Chess Tourney on April 12 and narrowly missed placing among the county’s best schools. The Chess Club is composed of 17 players from second to eighth grade. The team coach and advisor is Oscar Badillo. The team meets to practice and hosts intra-school competitions twice a week and competes on weekends against schools throughout MiamiDade County through the 64 Squares Foundations which hosts competitions. All of the efforts and training cumulated in the last major

tournament of the year, a Grand Prix Tournament held at Divine Savior Academy in Doral. MLK-8 brought a team of seven students who all did well playing five games each in their respective categories. Best of the bunch was Michael Montoya III, a chess whiz who won county-wide accolades and will advance to state and national competitions. When asked why they train and push so hard at such a challenging game, one team member summarized it best saying, “I love chess because every game is new and I get better every time. It is really hard but I know it makes me think faster and smarter.”

ELIZABETH BERENGUER is a sophomore at Jose Marti MAST Academy. She recently attended the Florida Future Business Leaders of America state leadership conference and competition in Orlando from March 22 - 25. She earned first place in district and states for entrepreneurship which qualifies her for the 2019 National Leadership Conference which will take place in Texas from June 24 HIALEAH MIAMI LAKES math teacher Ismary Gondar (left), to July 2. MLEC’s National Honor Society members brought smiles to Children’s Hospital Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) National Honors Society (NHS) partnered with Children Battling Cancer (CBC) to support their Easter collection drive. The students organized a drive and collected small toys to go into Easter baskets that would be delivered to children at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, so that they could enjoy the holiday from their rooms. “I love to organize these donation drives because I know they are going to benefit people that deserve our help. It's also a great way to get students involved in something much greater than themselves,” said Kaylee Miranda, a senior in the Cambridge Academy and the NHS president. This is the third major drive that MLEC’s NHS sponsored this school year. Over the sum-

mer, they collected clothes, shoes and school supplies for children at His House, a residential and foster care for children in crisis. The group has also organized toy drives and food drives for the holiday season. “As Easter and Passover approached, Kaylee thought of the children who may not be well enough to celebrate the holidays. She was the one that connected us with CBC,” said Erica Evans-DeSimone, Cambridge Academy Leader and NHS sponsor at MLEC. CBC is a non-profit organization that supports families with children going through cancer treatment both financially and emotionally. The toys were all sorted, organized and delivered to the hospital in time for the holidays.

nationwide to invite middle and high school students to produce short documentaries about a subject of national importance. This year students addressed the theme “What does it mean to be American? Choose a constitutional right, national characteristic, or historic event and explain how it defines the American experience.” In response, a record 6,318 students from 48 states and Washington, D.C., participated. MLEC was one of only two high schools in Miami-Dade County to be recognized. In their film, the team explored the First Amendment and its role in American democracy. “All of us come from immigrant families,” said Mairena, who emigrated to the United States just three years ago. “In Nicaragua, freedom of speech does not exist.” As student journalists, the freedom of the press was already a topic that they’ve discussed, both in and out of class. “I love the First Amendment,” said Miami Lakes Mayor

HOPE youth group helps Mexico Beach repairs PAGE 26

MAY 3, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

Spring break for the 16 members of the Miami Lakes United Methodist Church Youth group this year was a life changing and heartwarming experience as they traveled almost 600 miles to lend a helping hand to the still broken and battered Mexico Beach community in northwest Florida. Five months after Hurricane Michael struck this quiet beach community located in the Florida panhandle, they are still cleaning up and rebuilding from the devastating storm. Fire Chief Sandy Walker said, “95 percent of the 1,000 or so houses, hotels and condos were either completely

destroyed or uninhabitable.” The devastation to property was overwhelming but the impact on the lives of those who came home to a shattered community was much worse. For many, there will be no rebuilding as the requirements for new construction will exceed whatever help the government will provide. For others the thought of starting over is just too much and they will construct another life in another place. Those who stayed have braced for the daunting task of cleaning up not only their homes, but their community as well. With so much to do and so

little help the arrival of the "JWalkers" youth group was a badly needed dose of HOPE for Mexico Beach. For many of these youth it was their first mission trip and before they set out they were told there would be one toilet, one sink, no showers and one room for the group and their adult chaperons to sleep in. Add to the mix a long ride and grueling work, it tested them in ways they had not previously experienced. Most teenagers would shy away from spending their spring break working so hard under such difficult circumstances, but this group of young

men and women proved to be very special. Pastor Stuart Bodin who led the mission trip said of the young people who participated, “I was amazed how much of their hearts they poured into the project and the incredible amount of joy they demonstrated over the four days we worked despite the rough conditions.” The group provided many hands to help with hurricane debris removal for two homes, but for the Mexico Beach United Methodist Church, not only did they help with the cleanup, they went one step further and also worked to rebuild the church which had been decimated both by the high winds and the hurricane storm surge that had flooded the church. The church was an important project for the group because it has in the pre-hurricane past provided help to the homeless in the area and had themselves led a mission trip each year to rebuild homes. Putting the church back together would reempower them to help many others in the community. Along with the massive amount of cleanup on the outside of the church the group also replaced furing strips, insulation and sheet rock. To accomplish this they had to learn new skills and work

with power tools. For many having the opportunity to actually build something was a highlight for the trip and they didn't want to quit until everything was completed. Julie, a junior at American High said, “When God wants to make you his tool, there is no limit on what you can fix.” Each young person experienced the mission project differently and Kade, a junior at Miami Lakes Educational Center, shared it was the worship on Sunday morning that was special for him because it was so hope filled and moving. He said, “Hearing the stories of the people who had been able to return to their church after five months and seeing their tears of joys really got to me.” Everyone agreed the mission was an incredible opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of many people and they felt a deeper connection with each other and with God. Erica, who is a senior at UCF and one of the adult chaperones said, “Being able to earnestly and thoroughly help someone is always a gift unto itself. Being able to share that gift with my home church and the youth group is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Our Lady of the Lakes celebrates ‘Spirit Day’ honoring Haiti school

On April 11 Our Lady of the Lakes’ (OLL) school community had an opportunity to offer prayers and support to their sister school in Haiti, Nan Palan. OLL students participated in a day of fun, while playing various student created games in the

school gym during Spirit Day. The games taught students different facts about Haiti and their sister school. All students wore red and white (the school colors of their sister school) to show their love and solidarity with them. The

day began and ended in prayer. At the end of the Spirit Day, faculty, staff and students celebrated the amount raised for their sister school which totaled $1,146. This included personal donations given by students.

Band students from Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK-8) performed solos during the Florida Bandmasters Association District 16 solo and ensemble event in February at Coral Reef Senior High. The solo and ensemble event is a part of the Music Performance Assessment for middle and high school students. Young musicians prepare a solo to perform with piano accompaniment in front of a judge. Judges comment on the musician’s performance regarding notes, rhythms, dynamics, tone and overall technique. MLK-8 soloists who earned a “Superior” rating were Nicholas Corea, clarinet; Sabrina Scavuzzo, trombone; Erik Guillen clarinet and Jayden Roche, trumpet.
