Council approves assigning two town officers for BGEC, MLK-8

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The police chief for MiamiDade County Public Schools ensured Miami Lakes council members that a school resource officer will be placed at each public school by next year to ensure the safety of students in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High shooting massacre that took the lives of 17 students and teachers. Police Chief Ian Moffett also told the town’s elected voices that his department investigates all social media and personal threats among students, and monitors school cameras to stop any imminent crisis. With $400 million of state money for all Florida public schools, Moffett said his department can beef up security to

shield more than 10,000 students at the town’s schools, but the 100 school resource officers won’t finish their training, including dealing with school shootings and mental health issues, through the police academy until next year. “The proper training takes time,” Moffett said at the April 3 Town Council meeting. “It takes 6 to 12 months to hire, train and deploy the officers. The town can help us with its schools until we get our officers there.” The gap left Miami Lakes reassigning two of its own police officers at Miami Lakes K-8 Center and Bob Graham Education Center, the two schools without police protection for 3,000 students for $35,000 until the end of the

school year. The town is using the police overtime budget for the two officers. However, Miami Lakes’ Police Commander Javier Ruiz said the officers at the two schools for five to seven hours a day could have an effect on law enforcement services. He said less officers would be used for bike patrol and community policing, and the town could experience a slight spike in commercial and residential burglaries and traffic infractions. But Ruiz supports the move as a temporary solution. “It would affect our ability to police but I fully support putting officers there to do that function,” he said. (Please see Page 2)

School officials assure town their student safety efforts are working (Continued from Page 1) Councilmember Marilyn Ruano, however, was concerned over less police officers fighting crime and offered to move $35,000 from the town’s litigation reserves to the police overtime budget. “$35,000 is not a lot of money for the safety of 3,000 kids,” she said. But her idea was rejected. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre said the long-running lawsuit which former mayor Michael Pizzi filed against the town for attorney fees is escalating. “I’m hesitant to take money from the litigation reserves at this point,” he said. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said the Northwest Police District can assist the town if there’s a shortage of officers to respond to emergencies. “We would be covered,” he said. Since the Parkland shooting massacre in February, area residents have been scrambling for solutions to protect their kids while they are learning in school.

North Region Superintendent Jose Bueno told council members the school district added extra security measures to enhance their safety. He said students, teachers and administrators are now required to wear identification badges to make sure they belong on school grounds, and limit access to the facilities following dismissal time. “The steps we are taking we didn’t do in the past,” he said. Bueno said threats that are made among students are reported to schools police and Moffett and his officers subsequently investigate the perils to determine if they warrant criminal charges. “Each threat made at our schools channels over to the police chief and the officers do what they have to do,” Bueno said. Moffett, a police officer for more than 25 years, said after school treats are reported to his department, he collaborates with Miami-Dade police, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security and obtains search warrants to enter a students’ home as part of the probe. He said the proactive approach and resources can stop any threats from occurring. “Every single threat, we follow up on no matter if it’s day or at night,” he said. “The

secret to success is the followup the next day.” Reportedly, several school treats were made in the town but Moffett didn’t want to elaborate since they are still under investigation. Moffett said he’s seeking the right school resource officers to place at the schools. Part of their duties include mental health evaluation, counseling and educating students, and building a relationship with their parents as well. “Being in the classrooms, they tell kids what to do and what not to do,” he said. Councilmember Luis Collazo, who attended the schools police strategic mapping and mental health meetings, said he’s impressed over the district’s plan to prevent threats from occurring. “I’m convinced you’re taking care of your customers,” he said. In other Town Council news: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to allow the Town Manager Selection Committee more flexibility in their decision-making process in narrowing their list to seven applicants for lawmakers to consider for the job. Miami Lakes unveiled the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places project at the Town’s Youth Center (The Spot) on March 10 at 6075 Miami Lakes Drive. Art in Public Places is a program of Miami-Dade’s Department of Cultural Affairs and serves the community through the implementation of art installations dedicated to enriching the public environment and to preserving and enhancing the artistic and civic pride of the county. The Art in Public Places ordinance established allocating 1.5 percent of construction cost of new public buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks. The Youth Center’s Art in Public Places project is a colorful 3-dimensional suspended sculpture floating through the building’s breezeway. Its oval shape fills the space and offers

different views from different angles. Energetic yellow and red hues make the sculpture the center’s visual highlight. During the day, light is filtered through the transparent panels onto the breezeway walls and floor. At night, the effects of it are dramatically different through the illumination by the upward and downward lighting. The shape of the sculpture resembles an alien space ship. The breezeway marks the functional intersection of the building and the sculpture literally embodies the nickname “The Spot” in its center. The sculpture is made of multiple hand colored acrylic glass panels, mounted on light weight trusses and measures approximately 8 feet by 12 feet. For more information about the Spot, visit www.miamilakes-fl.gov/thespot.

New Florida budget includes $1 million for two M. Lakes capital projects

The Town of Miami Lakes was a big winner for state funding, as Florida Governor Rick Scott approved $1 million for two major capital improvement projects requested by two State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr., and Jose Oliva and State Senator Rene Garcia. The Miami Lakes and Hialeah Representatives secured the funding during the 60-day Legislative Session, $500,000 for phase III of the West Lakes Drainage Improvements and $500,000 for the Royal Oaks Drainage Improvement projects, and Scott subsequently signed off on them last week. “This budget is significant for the residents of Miami Lakes,” said Diaz. “The drainage projects are also very important, because they will help avoid flooding, prevent erosion and protect public and private property. I’m always aware that behind the budget numbers are actual people whose lives are impacted by what we do during session, and I believe our communities will benefit from these dollars being put to work for us.” The two projects were identified as important in improving Miami Lakes’ infrastructure for the town’s Stormwater Management and Flood Mitigation Plan, according to a 2014 Miami Lakes survey. Both communities have repetitive loss properties, according to FEMA. The West Lakes community in the southwestern portion of the Town of Miami Lakes, continues to be adversely impacted by flooding events and is addressed as a priority project in the Stormwater Master Plan. This project will reduce flooding for Miami Lakes residents living in the area. The Royal Oaks community in the northwestern portion of the Town, suffers numerous flooding events during heavy rainfall and storms, resulting in inadequate drainage, flooding on residential roads, and unsafe transportation conditions. Both projects will benefit the Town by reducing flooding, improving drainage capacity, eliminating standing rain and stormwater, protecting residential property, reducing the possibility of mosquito-transmitted diseases to the public, and improving the quality of lives of the Miami Lakes community and constituents. The Town extended thanks to Governor Rick Scott, State Senator Rene Garcia, and Representatives Manny Diaz Jr., and Jose Oliva.

Due to the county’s miscalculations of fees for the guard gate district, Miami Lakes owes Miami-Dade about $50,000 if they want to proceed to regulate the district. Council members refused to pay the county since they blame the officials for the mistake. To try to solve the problem, Rey said the residents changed to a less expensive vendor which would generate a savings of $20,000 starting next year to pay off the debt. He said the town plans to look at the numbers from 2015 to determine if they are accurate.

Relaxed, Soothing, Comfortable & Affordable!

2018 is a historic year for Cub Scout Pack 660 which is celebrating 50 years of service to the community fostering “Leadership through Fun” in young boys from Miami Lakes and the greater North Dade community. Chartered to Miami Lakes United Methodist Church and affiliated with Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Pack 660 has always worked with boys in grades 1 to 5 to teach them citizenship, outdoorsmanship, confidence, and character. “Our Pack’s long history in Miami Lakes is substantive,” said Cub Master Sean Schwinghammer, who has worked with the Pack for 16 years. “Whenever people from the community meet boys from our

Pack, they share memories of when their children and grandchildren were in the Pack. Pack 660 has been a main stay in the community and has been blessed with thousands of wonderful boys and families,” he said. The Pack marked the start of its 50th anniversary year at its annual Blue and Gold Banquet in February celebrating the birthday of Cub Scouting. At the event, Pack 660 Scouts hosted its own Pine Wood Derby car race and earned many awards. In addition, six boys earned their Arrow of Light Award, the highest award in Cub Scouting. The Webelo Scouts earned the award under the leadership of their Den Leader Rebecca Correa.

MLK-8 Center students visit Palm Springs Villas PAGE 14

APRIL 6, 2018

Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK-8) educator Ada Romeu is the middle school chairperson as well as the teacher for MLK8’s Pre-Law class, which is the first of its kind in their law studies program. Romeu’s class is on the Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program, which inspires students to serve the

community. Several projects are currently being implemented in conjunction to this program. Sixth graders Sabrina Pena, Alyssa Galarza and Sofia Rodriguez set out to raise awareness and funds from the school community to purchase fuzzy socks for the senior citizens at Palm Springs Villas in

Hialeah. Their goal was to “warm their feet and warm their hearts,” which was translated to Spanish for the residents native tongues. They attached that special message to the socks with a ribbon, purchased some pastries and brought the special items to the facility with smiles and car-

ing words on February 19. This was their first time at the home, and students were both nervous and excited to meet their new friends. The seniors were so grateful to have students from MLK-8 visiting them, and they were quick to invite them back. “I was very proud of my students and their parents,” Romeu said. “They attended the event too.” The students worked together as they crafted an action plan and eventually completed their project, bringing smiles to the community and letting them

know that MLK-8 truly cares. This project that started as a vision several weeks ago is now complete, with students completing about 25 hours in community service. Now these students are excited to take on a new project and eventually return to visit Palm Springs Villas. “It's a beautiful thing to watch how these children grow as they are faced with challenges throughout the full process,” Romeu explained. “It’s amazing how happy they are to help the community.”

SENIOR RESIDENTS at Palm Springs Villas welcomed a group of Miami Lakes K-8 Pre-Law students recently during a Lead2Feed visit.

American looks to face Gables with three standout senior players

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff There’s no love lost between American High and Coral Gables High’s softball teams. The Patriots and Cavaliers clashed in the regionals the past four years, but American got the short end of the stick last season and is hoping for a rematch. Though the post season doesn’t start until later this month, American players have reached a foregone conclusion that the two teams will meet again, and if so, the anticipated match-up places a lot of pressure on senior standouts, pitchers Ashley Alfonso, Erika Castroman and shortstop Tyenna Colon. “For us seniors, it’s nerve racking but it’s exciting for the other players,” said Castroman, who accepted an offer to attend Lynn University in the fall. AMERICAN HIGHʼS trio of senior standouts include (from “Our last high school game left) shortstop Tyenna Colon, pitcher Ashley Alfonso and could be against Coral Gables.” pitcher Erika Castroman. The Patriots (9-4), who are on pace to win their eighth consecutive district championship, have dominated most of their opponents during the regular season, winning by an average You r V isio n i s my P rio rity margin of 10 runs per game. Head coach David Fernandez said he has created a culture among his players to keep them Wedding Officiant focused on winning including a Covering all South Florida cultivating locker room and working hard in practice. “I’ve seen a lot of teams fall apart late in the season,” he said. “We’ve kept ourselves together through the culture.” Fernandez said the loss against the Cavaliers was devastating, especially for the seniors. He watched tears streaming down the visages of some of his players, which broke his heart. “As a man, it’s hard to show your true emotions but for the girls, they let it all out,” he said. “I felt we were the better team even though we lost. We just didn’t play up to our potential that day.” But on the other hand, he has seen tears of joy, the culmination of dedication to the sport and hard work. “I always said let’s best prepare ourselves to play the game at the highest level,” he said. “If you play without fear and give everything you got, you have no reason to live with regret.” Fernandez said the team is banking on Alfonso, an AllDade player last season and leaning toward Miami-Dade College and the College of Central Florida. “She remembers Coral Gables and a lot of pressure is on her shoulders,” Fernandez said.

“She can take the team as far as it can go.” But Alfonso, who is 6-1, also remembers Palmetto from last season. She pitched a near perfect game, as the Patriots bounced the then-top ranked team when the odds were stacked against them. The game was the impetus for her All-Dade performance throughout last season. “Palmetto said they would beat us but we proved them wrong and beat them,” she said. “That was the best game of my life.” Alfonso, who won 14 games and recorded 137 strikeouts last season, acknowledged she is nervous during big games but her teammates help her relax to pitch a good game. “They always have my back,” she said. “When I get nervous, they calm me down.” Colon, who earned All-State First Team honors in 2016 and plans to enroll at Southeastern Nova University, said they are ready for the post season, especially should American and Coral Gables cross paths again. “One team is going to end the other’s season,” she said.

Pace’s Frank Pelegri considers Carolyna Bellon a career highlight THE MIAMI LAKER

In his 22 seasons as Pace High’s wrestling coach, Frank Pelegri has sent at least one student-athlete to the state championships in each of those years. But Carolyna Bellon is perhaps the highlight of his coaching legacy, as the ninth-grade student was ranked the No. 1 seed for girls in the state tournament this season, registering an undefeated mark during the regular season, district and regional playoffs before she lost her first match at the state competition. She finished with a 2-2 record in the 126-pound division, which Pelegri calls a major feat for a ninth grader competing in a male-dominated sport. “Winning two matches as a freshmen in a tough competition deserves high praise,” said Pelegri, who’s a member of the Florida chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “She has developed into an amazing talent, working very hard to get where she is today. She has attributes to be successful. You couldn’t ask for a better studentathlete than Carolyna.” Bellon, who also competes in Judo, said combining the two sports helped her reach the state championships.

CAROLYNA BELLON “While doing Judo outside of school, wrestling just caught my attention,” she said. “The two sports are different but compliment each other. It was hard the entire season, with a lot of hard work, practicing with the guys, training and dieting. I didn’t do anything different than the guys.” Bellon admitted she was nervous competing in her first state tournament but excited she made it that far. She credits Pelegri for helping her prepare for high school’s biggest stage. “Coach Pelegri is one of the best,” she said. “Though I’m a

girl, he treats me the same as the guys.” Pelegri also guided four boys’ to the state championships this season, applauding them for grappling with an arduous task of bringing back a championship for the Spartans. The stellar performances of sophomore James Guerrier (113 pounds), senior Tivvon Cruickshank (160 pounds), sophomore Ray Lugo (220 pounds), and junior Max Benjamin, a heavyweight, added to the lore of Spartans’ wrestling. Pelegri said wrestling is a tough sport and he and his players rely on their faith to reach the state tournament. “You can’t take it for granted because it’s not easy getting a kid there each year,” he said. “By the grace of God, these student-athletes qualified for the state tournament. “I am extremely happy with this season, winning 17 matches and watching these great kids get better as students, athletes and people outside of school.” Pelegri said Bellon and his players for 2018 are on pace to win state titles next season. “I’m looking forward and excited to be coaching them again next year,” Pelegri said.

PACE HIGH SCHOOLʼS track team literally ran away with top awards during the recent Westminster Invitational meet in Lauderdale Lakes.

ML Educational Ctr. names three for Silver Knight THE MIAMI LAKER

Students Alexandra Reboredo, Dru Barcelo and Katherine Duarte are this year’s Silver Knight Award nominees from Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). While Reboredo is nominated in the New Media category, her classmate Barcelo is nominated in the Speech category and Duarte is nominated for Social Sciences. Reboredo has an unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 3.83 and has volunteered over 250 hours. Academically, Reboredo has been part of the

school’s Speech and Debate club. She also hosted a donation drive to His House Children’s Home, and she even planned a visit on behalf of MLEC’s National Honor Society (NHS). As part of her work with NHS, she also held college presentations and tutored fellow classmates. “Upon joining NHS, I worked closely with the officers on expanding outside of our school, and into the community,” Reboredo said. “We found His House Children's Home in Miami Gardens, and since then, MLEC’s NHS chapter has maintained a close relationship with them.” Barcelo has an unweighted GPA of 3.7, and has participated in voting registration drives,

and even volunteered as part of the democratic campaign canvassing for Tim Canova and Hillary Clinton. He’s a lead coordinator in the school’s Fight Apathy Campaign; an organization where students can discuss what needs to change politically in their school. “Civic engagement is something that I encourage my school chapter to do, making it a corner stone in what my service is centered around,” Barcelo said. Duarte’s 3.7 unweighted GPA and almost 600 volunteer hours has earned her spot as one of MLEC’s Silver Knights. She has also participated as a coordinator in Taking Action To End Child Abuse and Neglect (TAECAN). The two-part project

APRIL 6, 2018

involved raising awareness among all MLEC students about child abuse and neglect. Duarte’s goal in participating in TAECAN is to show fellow classmates that no one is too young to take action to help children in need.

“Not only was I able to spread awareness and prevention about child abuse and neglect to my fellow classmates, but I was also lucky enough to spend time with children that are working hard to rise above their circumstances,” explained Duarte.

BGEC student Brian Lopez in Honors Music Festival Brian Lopez, an 8th grader at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC), was one of only three students that were recommended by his band director to audition for the Annual Superintendent’s Honors Music Festival. He is the only student that was accepted to play at the concert. This is a great accomplishment, especially since Lopez has only been playing trumpet since the beginning of this school year. His advanced skill level can be attributed to his newly discovered love of music as well as his tenacity to improve his musical ability. Lopez will perform with the Honors Concert Band on April 21 at the Miami Senior High School auditorium. The BGEC family offered special thanks to his band teacher Carlos Perez, who has worked diligently to get him to this level.

Pace holds school wide prayer service for Parkland school victims

By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Following the tragic events that took the lives of 17 individuals in Parkland this past February, the students at Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) felt the call to join the local community as well as the nation, by holding a school-wide prayer service to remember the lives lost. On March 14, marking the one month anniversary of the tragedy, students who wanted to participate were invited to quietly walk out of their classrooms for the prayer service. As they arrived on the track surrounding the football field, the BRIAN LOPEZ accepted to students joined hands and play in annual Superinten- Campus Ministry director dent’s Honors Music Festival Andres Novela took time to address them with an emotional on April 21. call, saying “Today we walk out, we speak up and we stand. We stand in solidarity with the victims of gun violence and those affected by the tragedies

at Parkland. We stand with the youth, those whose voices are calling for justice, for change – echoed by the prophet Jeremiah, who heard the voice of God say, ‘Do not let anyone tell you you are too young’.” As a school community, the students, faculty and staff took part in a 17 minute assembly of prayer and reflection, one minute for each of the lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The atmosphere was solemn and respectful as Pace junior Jerusha Jean sang a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace.” At the center of the field, students held signs reading “MSD Strong,” “Take this time 2 take action!” and “#NeverAgain.” In a touching tribute to the victims, a group of students held photos and shared short stories about each of them aloud. “We are teenagers just like them and they lost their future. Those parents lost their kids and

these kids won’t be able to go to college,” said eleventh grader and Student Government president David Barbier. For students, the prayer service offered them the opportunity to reflect and unite in an effort to keep the conversation going. Barbier and the students were thankful to the administration for their support in letting them express themselves in this way. “It’s important for the kids to know that they can speak out and that they do have a voice. Part of our role is to help them become adults in our society who are not afraid to speak up and to talk about what is right and what is wrong,” acknowledged principal Ana Garcia. “This was a prayer service, and this was an opportunity to come together as a community and say we understand and we hurt as well. Today we pray together, so we can act together and create change together.”

ML Educational Ctr. celebrates three Posse Scholars THE MIAMI LAKER

By Valeria Bula Special to The Miami Laker Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) is home to students who are among the most exceptional, hardworking and talented individuals nationwide. Every year, Jaguars leave the familiar teal walls of MLEC to pursue their dreams all around the world, and the sky is the limit. This year, the Class of 2018 celebrates three Posse scholars: Brianna Foster, Alexandra Reboredo, and Dawun Smith. Since 1989, the Posse Foundation has recruited over 8,000 extraordinary public high school students, granting fouryear full tuition leadership scholarships to prestigious partner colleges and universities. This year, this dream has come true for these three Jaguars. “I applied to Posse because I always wanted to attend an outof-state school for college, but I never knew how I was going to be able to afford going,” said Smith, who was accepted to Hamilton College. Hamilton was Smith’s first choice and now he has the opportunity to attend his dream school on a full scholarship. Not only does Posse award scholarships, but they offer students support throughout their studies. It’s a “posse” because students become members of a small network of students, a network and support group that is also linked to Posse alumni. “When I went to the University of Miami High School Careers in Medicine Workshop over the summer, one of the teacher assistants was a Posse Scholar and she’s the one who convinced me to do it. She inspired me to apply,” said Foster, who will be attending Davidson College. The application process for

Posse provides a very unique, yet rigorous, experience for its applicants as they go through three rounds, known as the Dynamic Assessment Process (DAP), before reaching the final interview. Because of this, even those most exceptional candidates faced difficulties along the way. “One of the biggest challenges for me was what they called, ‘trusting the process’ and that was because when we were there they had us do odd things during the DAP, such as walk around the room and pretend you’re one of Beyonce’s backup dancers,” said Reboredo, who will be attending Hamilton College in the fall. “They also had us do many team building activities that you wouldn’t really expect. It was more fun than an actual interview. That was hard for me because it made me wonder how they learned about me through the things we did,” explained Reboredo. “You have to connect with the other applicants and be a team player,” said Smith. “The most difficult part was me going up to random people and introducing myself and starting a conversation.” But behind these hardships, both in high school and throughout the application process, was years of personal motivation for each of our scholars, which allowed them to find the inspiration to apply.

“My grandmother was my inspiration for applying,” said Foster. “She was fully blind and yet she was able to raise my mom and uncle, come here to the U.S. and get a master’s degree. Now, she’s a social worker for the county.” Our Jaguars appreciate these opportunities, particularly and perhaps more poignantly, because of all of the sacrifices their families have made to help them each achieve their dreams. “The fact that no one in my family has done this or knows of the opportunities you can get here and being first generation, makes this almost a way of giving thanks to my parents for the journey they have been through so I can have my future,” said Reboredo. Our Jaguars all aspire to reach great heights: Foster plans to become a trauma surgeon, Smith a pediatric surgeon and Reboredo a lawyer. These students find themselves among the network of thousands of Posse scholars nationwide, but will always be Jaguars, no matter how far they go.

APRIL 6, 2018

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Pace High School (Pace) students competed at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Florida State Leadership Conference on March 16 through 19 at Orlando. The FBLA competition showcased a wide variety of business events in categories like accounting, advertising, entrepreneurship, coding and programming as well as community service. Some notable performers for Pace included junior Vanessa Perez-Robles who received 5th place in Public Speaking. In addition, a trio of freshman, Nicolas Macias, Eric Gonzalez

THE MIAMI LAKER

and Jonathan Reyes received 4th place in the category of Mobile Applications Development. “The FBLA state conference was a very fulfilling experience. Not only was I exposed to the limitless possibilities that the business world has to offer, but I was also able to meet people from all over Florida with the same drive and ambition that our club instills in our members,” stated Pace's FBLA Club president and senior Grace Li. The FBLA is an organization dedicated to helping high school students improve their leadership capabilities and achieve their academic goals. It is intended to help the youth

better understand American business enterprises and helps youth students build a future path for their college and career goals. “The state conference taught me how business can be used to our benefit for our future careers, no matter what they may be. I am truly appreciative for the opportunity to have attended as it was full of learning experiences that I know will help me in my future career,” Li said, who hopes to major in engineering. The Florida Chapter of FBLA currently has over 15,000 members across the state, making it one of the largest in the nation.

Spanish Lake Elementary students and staff create tribute to Parkland victims After the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas's (MSD) tragedy on February 14, the staff at Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) knew they would be facing a sensitive and challenging situation in the days to come with students and their families. Through teamwork, courage, compassion, empathy and the support they found in one another, the staff reaffirmed that the world is a good place. The SLE family prides itself in doing everything possible to have systems in place to keep students safe. The SLE staff emphasizes that if a student sees something they must say something to a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator or parent. This includes bullying, harassment, exclusion, aggressive or hurtful behavior. A group of 3rd grade teachers decided to help turn this tragedy into a teachable

moment by uniting the school to a “pay it forward.” With the guidance from the ParentTeacher Association (PTA), they designed an #MSDStrong t-shirt. The PTA made the shirts available to students, staff and family members which are now worn proudly in support of MSD. SLE raised $4,700 in their honor. The shirts were first introduced on March 14, and will be worn on the 14 of each month in solidarity with the victims of Parkland. On March 14, the students took on a challenge from superintendent Alberto Carvalho and SLE principal Jacqueline AriasGonzalez to discuss 14 ways a student can be kind to another student and three ways to be kind to an adult to commemorate those who lost their lives at MSD.

Spanish Lake Elementary salutes school’s Science Fair award winners Spanish Lakes Elementary School (SLE) students participated in the South Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Miami-Dade College North. In doing so, they learned the importance of designing, testing, analyzing and displaying projects while using scientific methods and investigations to solve problems. As they stood by their projects and presented them, they felt their teacher’s support. Administrators who helped walk them through the inquirybased learning process was one of the most valuable tools in their success. In their classes they asked questions, conducted investigations and designed solutions as they saw how their scientific investigations come to life. Students placing in the district level this year included: Fourth grader Daniel Caraballo received a gold for “Let's Talk Driving: Will playing a driving simulated game and talking on the phone affect the completion rate of a lap?”

People being studied were observed while playing the video game Project Car. Those having a conversation were distracted, and ultimately took longer to complete their lap. Fifth graders Marissa and Vincent Vogel received a gold for their project “Droppings and Marigolds...Oh My!” They tested to see if adding rabbit droppings helped speed up the sprouting rate, and as a result, it did assist the growth of the flowers. Fifth grader Giovanni Cruz’s project “Blocking Wireless Connection” earned him the silver award. Finally, 4th grader Samantha Perez received a bronze award for her project titled “What Type of Water Filters Water Best?” The Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics and Enrichment (SECME) Club completed the mousetrap car, the water bottle rocket competition, the patch and essay and the school banner competitions, which earned them participation ribbons in each of these areas.

Miami Lakes K-8 Center student musicians earn superior ratings THE MIAMI LAKER

Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK8) musicians have been busy earning top ratings at district performance events. This is the first year MLK8 students have participated in the district music performance assessment. On March 1, the school orchestra performed at Coral Reef Senior High for the Concert Music Performance Assessment. This 23-member string orchestra performed Sword Dance, Finlandia, and Antagonist for three judges. Their overall rating was the highest possible score, a superior rating. Orchestra students performed at the Florida Orchestra

Association Solo and Ensemble event on February 3 at Braddock Senior High, and the Band students participated in the Florida Band Association’s event on Friday, February 23 at Coral Park Senior High. The purpose of the solo and ensemble events is to perform a prepared piece for a judge and receive constructive feedback and an overall rating based on musicianship skills. All participating students received a superior. Performers range from first to third year band and orchestra members: Nickolai Rushka, Natalie Drada, Alyssa Galarza, Brianna Saldarini, Sofia

By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker In March, Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s (Pace) Law Studies and Criminal Justice Operations classes were visited by members of the City of Miami Police Department’s Bomb Squad and Homeland Security Unit. Officer Robert Rodriguez, a 27 year veteran with the department, spoke candidly to the students in Pace’s Innovation Center about how he, as a Police Officer, decided to get

involved with the bomb squad. He also spoke to the students about the extensive training required to become a member of this specialized unit. Once the presentation was complete, Rodriguez headed out to show students the bomb squad truck and to introduce the class to Officers Jason Clifford and Ralph Muina. The two specialized officers are currently preparing to train with the FBI in the near future to become bomb technicians. They helped demonstrate the

unit’s specialized robotics equipment and the suit worn when they are called to a scene where there is the danger of a possible explosive device. The Law Studies and Criminal Justice Operations classes are just two of the classes Pace offers as part of the school’s Law Academy and serves as a launch pad for those students who are interested in pursuing careers in legal studies or law enforcement.

Mathnasium is making math easier for students

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff For Anand Pitre and his wife Priya, learning math was not about memorizing different equations, but rather understanding the concept to make life easier for the student and their teachers. Fifteen years ago, Mathnasium was created by Larry Martinek in Los Angeles. Martinek wanted to teach his son better math, but thought the concept of memorizing each step was too complicated. He came up with a certain curriculum, and the rest is history. Fast forward to 2018, and over 850 centers are open world-wide, now expanding to Europe and the United Kingdom. Pitre and his wife opened their first Mathnasium franchise in Doral, and just opened a new center in Miami Lakes. Their newest addition is located at Royal Oaks Plaza at 15410 N.W. 77 Court in Suite 10. Although the location is new, many students from local schools flock over to enhance their skills. Teachers at the center are chosen like Ivy League applicants, and have to learn a new set of teaching methods to make sure they are “making math sense.” Tutors even have to learn to write upside-down to make it easier when showing students their work. Although Mathnasium has its own proper way of teaching, they never stray from what’s actually being taught at school. Pitre gave an example to teach their methods. First, add 99 plus 99 plus 99. Most students get stumped when they see so many large numbers put together. But instead of adding each one-by-one, Pitre teaches a short-cut to keep students from doing unnecessarily lengthy addition. “When I tell a kid, when you see 99 what do you think? 100, right? So if I add 100 three times, what will it give me? 300, and how much would I have to take away? Three, so that would be 297. This is how we want to address the math,” Pitre explained. Mathnasium teaches the youngest possible student until they learn Calculus. They create a membership model like a gymtype contract. Come when you need to, or don’t. It’s set in a group setting with revolving tutors. Instead of having the same person teach you the same subject over and over again, several tutors teach you the same method in the same way. That way, there’s no confusion and no boring routine. For more information about Mathnasium, visit their website at mathnasium.com/miamilakes or call (844)588-6284.

HML marching band joins with local middle school bands for April 13 concert

For the first time in school history, the Hialeah Miami Lakes High marching band will perform with local middle school bands in an effort to recruit the students to attend the high school and march with the Trojans. The marching bands from Miami Lakes and Palm Springs Middle schools and Miami Lakes K-8 Center will perform with the Trojans marching band at Concert Under the Stars, which is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday, April 13, at 7977 West 12 Avenue. HML band director Kevin Segura said he created the event to give middle school students an opportunity to play with his band in hopes of convincing them to join one of the top ten marching bands in the state. “I think this is a great recruitment tool for the middle school students to meet and play with our marching band,” said Segura, who’s percussion section finished third overall in the state competition this year. “Our students are the best recruiters who can tell the kids this band is awesome and this is a good school to attend.” The event is $5 for admission with free food and drinks served to participants. Segura, who plays the French horn, said he anticipates about 300 people to be on hand to watch his band and about 100 middle school students perform. He said his students are serious about their top ten ranking and among the best bands in the state. “They are very passionate and are like a big family,” Segura said.
