Rep. Manny Diaz Jr. names local area citizens to newly formed Blasting Task Force

A legislative task force was recently created to assist the state’s Fire Marshall Office in its efforts to find some solutions to the blasting which is allegedly causing damages to homes in the Northwest Miami-Dade area and the City of Miramar. Miami Lakes residents Josh Dieguez, Albert Aguiar and Daissys Estrada, Country Club of Miami Community Councilman Alex Rizo, Palm Springs North Civic Association board member Mercy Sierra and Miramar resident Kate Tobon will review the findings of the state’s blasting study and help State Representative Manny MIAMI LAKES student artists whose creative works were selected as overall winners in the Diaz Jr. craft ideas, solutions, ideally for legislation, clarifying Main Street Banner Art Contest celebrated at a special exhibit and unveiling on April 4. Diaz and State Senator Rene Garcia secured $300,000 last year for the blasting study after

residents complained about the rock miners’ explosions allegedly destroying their properties. The study would include measures to reduce the blasting intensity and frequency; move blasting zones further from residential areas; and require compensation for property owners for damages. Diaz indicated the study is not aimed at slowing down the rock mining industry’s blasting activities or hurting concrete business but making sure “we can find a middle ground between quality of life for residents near blasting zones and concrete production for the state.” “We have been fighting this for years, and it’s time to get a resolution that finally addresses all concerns,” Diaz said. “Palm Springs North, Miami Lakes, Northwest Miami-Dade, (Please see Page 2)

Local business owners should create a safe and security plan for their employees to respond to emergencies such as a burglary and armed robbery or a disgruntled person intent on harming people with gun violence. Miami Lakes Police Commander Major Javier Ruiz said drafting such a plan is crucial to react to critical incidents until the police and fire rescue arrive on the scene. As the guest speaker for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting last week at Shula’s Hotel, Ruiz said he would recommend the Run, Hide or Fight concept, which is frequently used by most businesses in South Florida. “The first key element is to run,” he said. “If something is wrong, identify where’s the best place to exit your business.” Ruiz said employees should evacuate the building and run to a safe location and call the police. “Grab who you can and run,” he said. “Get yourself to a safe location first and then dial 911.” The Hide concept is another safe and secure procedure. Ruiz said if there’s a possible threat outside a business, employees should first lock and block before hiding in a safe place, then call the police. Ruiz said employees may not have any other alternatives than to use the Fight concept.

Over 100 family, friends and supporters were in attendance and many of the ladies donned Graham for Governor dresses they wore when Bob Graham ran for the state’s top leadership position. As the daughter of the former Florida governor and U.S. Senator, Gwen Graham has adopted her father’s famous “Graham Workdays” during her state-wide campaign where she spends an entire shift working alongside Floridians, whether it be working on farms, teaching in public schools, or even training with the U.S. Air Force in a T-38 jet. In 2014, she successfully won a seat in Congress representing a conservative north Florida district and was one of just two Democrats in the entire country to defeat an incumbent Republican. She pledged to those attending the fundraiser that she would be a Governor for the voters, and not special interests.

Vets Committee’s annual Tree Dedication Ceremony honors Diego Hernandez Miami Lakes Veterans Committee memorialized veterans and Vice-Admiral Diego Hernandez at their annual Tree Dedication Ceremony on March 22 at Picnic Park West. Hernandez’s wife, Sherry, attended the ceremony and shared some memorable anecdotes about Diego “Duke” Hernandez, a longtime Miami Lakes resident and former chairman of the Veterans Committee. Hernandez was the first Hispanic American to be named Vice Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command, and commanded the Navy’s Third Fleet. After

receiving a Navy ROTC scholarship, he earned a degree in psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1955. After graduation, Hernandez went into Navy flight training. His military career spanned from 1955 to 1991. He led 147 combat missions in Vietnam and, in 1966, led the first strike conducted against two surfaceto-air missile sites in North Vietnam. He was shot down twice in the span of five months, and earned the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross. After a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, Hernandez passed last year at the age of 83.

MDC since “Annie” in May 2017. This timeless tale will feature beautiful music and hilarious comedy. For the first time in the MLA thespian’s history, the actors will be raised on wires, flying above the stage. The show will be directed by MLA art teacher Xierra Itayem, who has previously directed the plays “Scenes from a Dance” and “I Hate Shakespeare” which were performed at Mater Lakes. However, she believes this will be unlike any show the Thespian Society has put on before. “I think with every show we do we try to top ourselves, and I think that’s important especially with the MDC partnership,” Itayem said. “They have given us so many resources to keep growing, so we have to make sure that with every show we’re pushing ourselves and challenging ourselves to do more and do better.” Sophomore Jaily Gomez, who will be playing the titular role of Peter Pan, and who has been a Thespian since late 2016, has expressed her excitement to perform aerial acrobatics. She also mentioned her increased preparation for this role, including her experience with gymnastics and ballet. “Rehearsals have been running on the set schedule and it seems like Ms. Itayem has everything in order,” Gomez said. “I think all the cast is very talented. We're on schedule to do great things and we have a lot of time to work on this show so we can really perfect anything that goes wrong in the early stages.” Playing Wendy in the show is sophomore Veronica Ginzo, who has had a very recent streak of success after her leading role as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz”, Humbly, she said she was surprised to see her name beside her role on the cast list. “It was very unexpected because I did not expect the position of Wendy at all. I went in expecting to be an extra and not a lead, so I was very excited,” Ginzo said. Lastly, for senior Robert Merkel, this show will mark his swansong for the drama club with a role of the play’s main antagonist, Captain Hook. This comes after four years of impressive performances from Merkel. “I really want to knock it out of the park,” Merkel said. “I really want to make sure everyone enjoys it and go out with a bang.” Tickets for the show are $10 at the door. Miami Lakes vocalist Mercedes Ferreira-Dias sings on The Voice By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Mercedes Ferreira-Dias is a 16-year-old Miami Lakes resident and junior at Mater Lakes Academy (MLA). She’s been a singer since she was six years old, a passion sparked by the movie adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, “Phantom of the Opera.” Dias was entranced by the movie, and would watch it religiously for the music. Dias was only eight when she began songwriting, and the rest was history. Dias has been performing in her school as well as locally in Miami Lakes. Her first performance outside of school was for Miami Lakes’ Fourth of July celebration when she was 11. She also attributes her teachers at MLA for motivating her and encouraging her to pursue her dreams. Dias plans on attending college, but is unsure about her major. “The future is scary!” Dias said. “Of course my dream is to be able to sing professionally, making a living while doing the thing that I love the most. But whatever my life unfolds, music is something I want to remain a constant in my life. I will never abandon that.”

FERREIRA-DIAS Just recently, Dias made her professional debut on the popular singing competition show, The Voice. Judges hold a “blind audition” to make sure the singer is judged for their talent, and not their looks. If the singer is picked, they must choose a team if there is more than one judge that turned around. There’s an entire process beforehand, but luckily Dias made it to the callbacks and was able to participate in the auditions. With her sister and parents alongside her, Dias was

able to strut onto the stage and give it her all. “They were beyond excited, and I am so grateful for that because it allowed me to feed off of the energy,” explained Dias. “My biggest fans are probably my parents. They really try to support me in any way they can!” Dias’s rendition of “All I Ask” by Adele was soulful and passionate, but unfortunately no judge turned their chair around to choose her. Although Kelly Clarkson was an inch away from turning around, she hesitated at the last second. This did not stop Dias, and she is determined to come back and earn her spot on The Voice. “I feel like I have improved a lot since then, gaining more confidence in my abilities as a singer and in myself as a person,” Dias described. “I feel like last time was not my time, and what happened was meant to happen.” With Dias’s strong voice and determined personality, there is no doubt she will make it through and make Miami Lakes proud. In fact, Dias has already been recognized by the Town which gave her her humble beginnings back in 2013.

He’s also an American Senior High School alumni. In addition to the boxing room, Artiles has been implementing new exercise machines and youth programs. “The one thing we’re looking at is how to enhance and be able to let members enjoy all the services that we offer. There’s a big difference between an athletic club and a gym,” said Artiles. “We cater to so many different segments of our member base.” Shula’s has been a community staple since its opening back in 1982. Artiles emphasizes that in his new role as general manager, he doesn’t plan on making too many changes. “Some of our younger members (from past summer camps) are now coming back with their families. They came here since they were about 13 something years old, and now they’re bringing their kids for summer camp,” Artiles said.

HML softball team preps for district meet

Hialeah Miami Lakes High softball team defeated district rival North Miami Beach in back-to-back games last week, crushing the Chargers 19-0 in their first meet and claimed victory in the second contest. The Trojans (9-4, 9-4 in district play), are preparing for the conference tournament champi-

onship, which starts next week, but face some tough competition. The Trojans are seeking vengeance if they face the Goleman Gators, who defeated HML twice in district play, and Jackson, Carol City and Mourning also stand in their way.

HML swept Mourning and Jackson and split two games against Carol City. The Trojans are led by seniors Thalia Caro, Elliannis Santos and Karina Londono; and juniors Lailah Baez, Sujay Garcia and Carmen Pardo. The Trojans are ranked No. 172 in the state of Florida.

Lourdes Diaz nominated for Principal of the Year PAGE 16

THE MIAMI LAKER

By Alexandra Reboredo and Rozany Guzman Special to The Miami Laker From the moment they set foot on Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) campus, students and their teachers focus on the future. “High school is important, but that is not the goal. Students are here to prepare for tomorrow,” said Lourdes Diaz, principal of MLEC. Students are told that they will graduate and that they will be prepared to succeed, all with Diaz’s promise to help them every step along the way. Diaz is one of the best principals in the District. She is currently the North Region Principal of the Year, and is one of four principals competing for MIAMI LAKES EDUCATIONAL CENTER principal Lourdes the recognition of Miami-Dade Public Schools Diaz (left) is congratulated by Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid County and teacher Neyda Borges for being nominated as Miami- Principal of the Year. MLEC is a Title I school. Dade Public Schools Principal of the Year. Eighty-eight percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority are either first-generation or immigrants themselves, originating from over 33 countries. For many of these teens, knowing that their principal not only knows them, but believes in them, can make all the difference. “Mrs. Diaz had a personal connection with many students, and she’s invested in our success,” said Michael Samper, who attended Hialeah Middle School under Diaz’s tenure and is now a junior at the University of Florida. Diaz cares about her students

because she says she is like them. She is from South Florida, and her parents were Cuban immigrants that worked very hard to provide for their family. They instilled in her the value of hard work and dedication. It was their unwavering support that always propelled her. So after graduating from Miami High in 1989, she attended college at Brown University and majored in English, American Literature and Psychology. She was far from home, but home was never far from her thoughts. During her breaks from school, she returned to Miami and often worked at her old high school, volunteering and substituting. “I didn’t choose education, education chose me,” said Diaz. “I loved school, I loved to be around school. So (on breaks) I would help out the teachers, my old coaches.” Once she graduated, she came back home and was greeted with a new opportunity. “There was an opening when a teacher left on maternity leave, and my old principal offered me the job,” said Diaz. “I taught ninth grade all day that first year and it changed my life,” she said of her first teaching assignment. The following year, she moved to Barbara Goleman Senior High, a brand new high school, and became part of its inaugural faculty. There, she taught English and coached basketball and softball. After a few years of teaching, and after earning a degree in

Educational Leadership, Diaz became an assistant principal at Coral Park Senior High School. Over the next few years, she worked at several schools before becoming a principal. “She has always been focused and a team player. One well respected by students and colleagues, none of those qualities have changed,” said Charlesette Chavis, an English teacher at MLEC who taught with Diaz at BGSHS. Her past experiences as a teacher, coach and administrator led her to MLEC, an A school which has received numerous awards and recognitions over the last three years, including becoming a Nationally Accredited Magnet School of Excellence. She has worked to create an even greater sense of community, both in and out of school. During Hurricane Irma, MLEC served as a shelter. It was also one of the shelters that the Red Cross did not have the man power to assist, but Diaz was there. “I worked with the town to lend support and assistance, and we were happy to find that Diaz was here providing food, shelter and a sense of normalcy during the storm,” said Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid. Schools are not just buildings. They are an integral part of the community. And the people who walk the hallways, students, faculty and staff all have a hand in building the future. That responsibility and privilege is not lost on Diaz.

Pace’s Tajmara Antoine Pace High School Drama presents awarded prestigious Bring It On: The Musical in May AnBryce Scholarship THE MIAMI LAKER

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) senior Tajmara Antoine has been named the recipient of New York University’s (NYU) prestigious AnBryce Scholarship and will begin attending the university this fall. In a story of triumph after overcoming obstacles, the now 17-year-old was born in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after her birth, her parents made the decision to move back to their homeland of Haiti. It is there where she attended Catholic school. She was raised speaking both Creole and French until she was 9. While always excelling in both academics and fine arts, Antoine's fate changed on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, when the family was impacted by the notable earthquake that devastated the island nation. A portion of the family’s home was completely destroyed, and for a week they lived in a makeshift tent made by her father in a nearby field. Antoine, along with her mother, her older brother and 3 month old baby sister, took the journey to the United States aboard military planes and landed in Miami where they lived with her godmother. Some time later, the family was offered a helping hand by the priests and nuns at Saint Mary's Cathedral in Miami and were given uniforms, books and tuition assistance to attend Saint Mary's Cathedral School in Miami. During this time, Antoine’s parents would alternate their time between Miami and Haiti in 6 month increments in order to care for the children as they did not yet have their official U.S. residency. It was not until Antoine was in the eighth grade that her parents were finally granted residency and were able to proudly see their daughter graduate as the valedictorian of her class. Tajmara went on to Curley Notre Dame High School for

TAJMARA ANTOINE three years and was continuing to excel academically before transferring to Pace at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year following Curley’s closure. As a Pace Spartan, Antoine has been an active member in volleyball, track and soccer teams. She has also participated in drama and choir. Antoine and her brother Eudens will be the first in their family to attend college. When the time came to submit college applications, Antoine applied to numerous universities throughout the country including seven out of the eight Ivy League schools. In March, she received a letter stating that she was among the top 30 of 20,000 applicants who had applied to NYU who were being considered for the AnBryce Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to academically-motivated students who demonstrate financial need and, who like Antoine, are the first generation in their family to attend college. After a series of three interviews she was awarded with a full academic scholarship for her four years of undergraduate study at NYU. She has decided to pursue a double major in English and Business Management and she is excited to explore the vast opportunities that await her as she begins her college experience in New York’s “Big Apple” this Fall.

By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Pace High School’s (Pace) Drama program will present the latest spring production of Bring It On: the Musical this month under the guidance of Marianne Martinez, first year lead teacher for Pace’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Program. The musical is loosely based on the 2000 film “Bring It On” and focuses on the competitive world of cheerleading and overthe-top team rivalries. Music and lyrics for the show are written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mastermind behind the smash hit and record breaking Broadway musical, “Hamilton.” The cast for the show will be the largest in Pace’s theatre history and with the help of the Spartan Cheerleading team in the show, it will surely be a spirited production that should not be missed. Bring It On: The Musical will run May 25 to 27 at Pace’s Spartan Center located at 15600 N.W. 32 Avenue. Pre-sale general admission tickets are on sale for $12 with VIP tickets for $20. They will be sold by all mem-

bers of the drama club as well as the school’s main office. Tickets may be purchased at the door

Spanish Lake Elementary students create sustainable food growing system Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) and Julie Barreto-Tejero, SLE on-site teacher sponsor, are excited to be among the 51 schools in Miami-Dade County to have become a part of The Education Fund's Food Forest For Schools. SLE introduced a newly planted sustainable food growing system that is home to "gourmet crops found yearround nestled among winding paths.” Students, families and community members will now be able to work in the garden and attend gardening and healthy cooking workshops.

The goal of the garden is to produce enough harvest that students will be given bags filled with goodies to take home. Additionally, the fresh vegetables will also be used in the school cafeteria. A variety of some of the fresh organic goodies includes pale collard greens, fresh herbs, June plum, red bananas and rare treats such as cranberry hibiscus and Okinawa spinach. This sustainable learning lab will introduce students to nutritional knowledge that will last a lifetime.

Students and staff help to plant fruits and vegetables in Spanish Lake Elementary School’s new community garden.

BGEC Civic Engagement students participate in Lead2Feed program THE MIAMI LAKER

Each year, students that take part in Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) at Bob Graham Education Center participate in various competitions including Lead2Feed, a leadership program that nurtures a new generation of leaders working to meet a need through project management, decision-making and teamwork to alleviate hunger needs within the community. Project Citizen is a curricular program promoting competent and responsible participation in local and state government while learning how to monitor and influence public policy. Students also participate in mock trials, a simulated trial process highlighting the role of juries in the administration of justice and examining case materials aligned with the middle school civics benchmarks. Additionally, BGEC students also participate in programs like We the People, an instructional program that enhances students understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy. Students discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of judges.

BGEC Civic Engagement Academy students participate in Lead2Feed leadership program. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. This year, sixth grade students participated in Lead2Feed project by making “morning bags” for the homeless that visit Camillus House. Camillus House provides a day program for anyone that needs to freshen up and start their day in a positive way. The students wanted to enhance this program by providing “Sunny-Side Up Morning Bags” for anyone in the day center. They organized and conducted a collection of certain items to include in a re-usable bag. These bags included water, toothbrushes, toothpaste, wipes,

fresh socks, clean shirt with morning breakfast bars, cereal and snacks. The students also added personalized, hand-written notes to encourage and provide a positive message to someone that may be going through a challenging time. Sunny Side Up bags were delivered to Camillus House on March 21 and were given to anyone in need. Not only did the students help others in their community, they also learned how to work together to accomplish a goal. advertising
