Our Lady of the Lakes Spring Festival March 8-11

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church (OLOTL) will be hosting its 44th annual Spring Festival on the school's grounds at 15801 N.W. 67 Avenue from March 8 through 11. Families looking for a funfilled day can stroll through the main section and play games. Local businesses will also be participating with exhibits for carnival attendees to stop by for dinner. The food court features an array of the best international food booths with something for every taste, including Latin, Cuban, Mexican, Italian, Jamaican, Colombian, Filipino, BBQ, American, Spanish Tapas and much more. “Due to its well-earned reputation, increasing numbers of people attend the festival to eat some of the most diverse and incredibly delicious food made fresh especially for attendees,”

said food booth chairperson Diane Pantaleon. More than 20 popular carnival rides and attractions will thrill people of all ages, including toddlers in the special kiddy ride section. Carnival-goers can see Miami Lakes from the top of the giant ferris wheel, listen to loud music at high speeds on The Orbiter and experience the thrill of the Kamikaze. Young people can scramble through fun houses, climb aboard a pirate ship and play traditional carnival games. “If you come to our Festival, you are guaranteed to have a great time,” said Father Jose Alvarez. The main stage is full of different live shows and performances throughout the weekend. Music will fill the nights with live bands and DJs. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid reports “Great news from the Florida Department of Transportation...our proposed pedestrian-bicycle trail connecting Miami Lakes and Hialeah is moving forward.” Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said, “We’re taking it slow. That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The lawmakers were reacting to a letter to Cid from FDOT District Six secretary James Wolfe dated February 23 in response to a Town of Miami Lakes Resolution regarding a passive park on the N.W. 154 Street I-75 bridge. “FDOT encourages the Town to collaborate with Miami-Dade County to secure support for the proposed project. Since April 2016, the FDOT Right-of-Way Office has coordinated with the Town on the proposed use of the property.

“FDOT will circulate the request to surplus the right-ofway on the east side to the Town of Miami Lakes and to convey the property on the west side to the City of Hialeah. FDOT will retain all the right-of-way within the limited access to I-75.” Wolfe’s letter also states, “FDOT supports the use of the bridge as a pedestrian walkway only, and not as a passive park. All decorative items such as planters will need to be moveable for bridge inspections. FDOT does not support the use as an observation platform due to safety concerns. “The project may be eligible for Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding if it were part of a trail or trail system. FDOT will continue to work with the Town on this project.” Cid said, “This amenity will be a great asset for all of Northwest Miami-Dade.”

County approves Town proposal to upgrade 154 Street signalization The Miami-Dade County Commission last week approved an interlocal agreement with Miami Lakes which allows the town to upgrade six traffic signals located along N.W. 154 Street between N.W. 87 and N.W. 77 avenues. The project is located in Commission Chairman Esteban

Bovo’s District 13, where the town is responsible for all equipment, engineering and installation costs for the traffic signals upgrade that provides new technologies that allow the county to implement advanced traffic management tools such as adaptive traffic signals controls, traffic responsiveness and connected vehicle capabilities to improve traffic mobility. Miami Lakes, having reviewed the improvements to traffic along N.W. 36 Street, has a resolution to implement the

same technology and strategies at six signalized intersections along Miami Lakes Drive at 77 Avenue, the Palmetto Expressway South, N.W. 77 Court, N.W. 79 Avenue, N.W. 82 Avenue and N.W. 87 Avenue. The town will pay $18,000 for the purchase of CCTV, and a contract with Econolite/Aegis ITS in the amount of $152,000 for the purchase of ASCT technology with an allowance of $30,000.

Mayor visits MLK-8 Center

MAYOR MANNY CID paid a visit to the Miami Lakes K-8 Center Law Studies class. He spoke to students from Jennifer Simeonʼs 7th grade class about his career and daily life as mayor of the community. Students were able to ask Cid questions and get to know more about current events in the town. Students enjoyed this wonderful experience.

Councilman Nelson Rodriguez proposes new Schools Safety law By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Some teachers are mulling quitting their jobs in fear for their safety in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting massacre which took the lives of 17 students and teachers, according to Miami Lakes Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez. But local police and state lawmakers are stepping up efforts to ensure the safety of teachers, students and school administrators and probe all threats to harm anyone on campus. The Parkland massacre, the second deadliest school shooting in U.S history, has sparked the shooting victims’ families,

teachers and activists to call for stricter gun laws that would prevent certain people from purchasing guns. Even though there have been no reports of shootings at Miami Lakes’ area schools, Rodriguez is not taking any chances since the shooting massacre, is and calling on local, state and federal elected officials to sponsor a bill which would ensure school safety. According to a memo to his colleagues and Miami Lakes residents, Rodriguez is requesting a Schools Safety and Security Bill which would provide two school resource officers at every school campus in Florida, additional funding for

school psychologists and counselors and protection to school teachers, counselors and administrations during and after school hours. He indicated some teachers might leave the profession if nothing is done to protect them and students from gun violence in public schools. Rodriguez also informed federal and state lawmakers who represent Miami Lakes and the surrounding areas, of his proposal for heightened security at Florida schools, especially in the Miami Lakes area. State Senator Rene Garcia, who chairs the Children, Family and Elder Affairs Committee, asked Senate President Joe Negron to form a task force to find comprehensive solutions to protect “our” students and teachers from gun violence. Garcia also suggested hiring former military and police officers to protect Florida schools. The shooting massacre opened the floodgates of emotions for Miami Lakes as well, where some residents’ kids knew some of the victims. Mayor Manny Cid said the town is taking all the necessary steps to increase security measures at local schools. “We are elevating the coalition between law enforcement and our schools,” Cid said. “Some schools may witness enhanced police presence and additional security. We also plan to take proactive measures to develop a crisis response plan in collaboration with the MiamiDade School Police.” The town organized a peaceful vigil last week in memory of the shooting victims at Picnic Park West, where parents expressed a concern over their kids’ safety while learning in school. “The parents are concerned when they drop off their kids to school,” Cid said. Miami Lakes Town Police Commander Major Javier Ruiz said the Miami-Dade Police Department is working with schools police to ensure a safe and secure environment for “our kids.” “But parents can help us by talking to our kids about this type of situation and what to do and how to handle them and always following the teachers’ orders” Ruiz said. “We all are heartbroken over the tragedy but we are lifting ourselves up and getting the work done on providing a safe environment for our kids.”

Lakes resident Christopher McCready wins in National Young Arts contest By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Christopher McCready was born with the talent of visual art. The 17-year-old has already won an award for his craft. In the National Young Arts Competition (NYAC), he nabbed a finalist spot in the visual arts category for his original artwork in painting sculpture and mixed media. McCready won the highest possible achievement alongside 25 other Florida finalists out of the 757 students who participated nationwide. Finalists received $1,000 and an opportunity to compete for the U.S. CHRISTOPHER MCCREADY Presidential Scholar in the Arts. poses in front of one of his art YoungArts Week is also a chance for finalists to attend an works.

intensive workshop of performance and study. Students are able to work with the national selection panel and take classes with trained and accomplished artists from around the world. The Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK-8) alumnus is currently attending Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) while enrolled in the fashion design strand. The McCready family has been residents of Miami Lakes since 1989. Marianne McCready, Christopher’s mother, attests to her son’s blossoming talent to his time spent at MLK-8. “He started to develop his artistic talent in earnest when he enrolled in Maria Ordaz’s art class in middle school at MLK8,” explained McCready. “While MLK-8 was not classified as an art magnet school, the art education there was on par with art magnet programs.” McCready has been applying to various prestigious art schools and has received scholarships to institutions like the School of the Art Institute Chicago, Maryland Institute College of Art and Florida International University. His dream is to become a creative director for a fashion label while breaking down the walls of gender conformity. The young McCready focuses his artwork on the fluidity of androgyny and all possible forms of gender expression. “It is my belief that by balancing the masculine and the feminine, you reach a perfect harmony,” McCready said. “My goal is to spark thought, raise awareness and encourage conversation on the changing landscape of gender normality.” This was McCready’s first time competing for the award. For more information about the competition and its participants, visit www.youngarts.org/winners.

Town of Miami Lakes’ first annual Food and Wine Festival has enjoyed overwhelming acceptance by residents and sponsors for the event scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at Miami Lakes Optimist Park and Marina. The festival will showcase something for every gourmand. Attendees can sip and savor for a great cause as all proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and donations will go to the Miami Lakes Town Foundation, Inc. which was established for charitable and educational purposes in the Town. Local business Miami Lakes Auto Mall has supported the event by becoming the main title sponsor while Specialized Investigations, Smack Tactical and Palmetto General Hospital are also contributing with sponsorships. Renowned restaurants and chefs from Miami Lakes and surrounding areas will be participating with their best presentations of food, wine and specialty beer. MARCH 2, 2018

Atemi-Ryu JuJitsu has been serving the Miami Lakes community since the early 1980s. Owner and Grand Master Philip “Doc” Chenique was a Miami Lakes resident for 12 to 15 years. Chenique first discovered his love of martial arts before he was even a teenager. At just 7-years-old, he was already training judo at a local YMCA in New York. He began practicing jujitsu six years later. His first job at 18 was folding cardboard boxes for Key Pharmaceutical in North Dade. At the end of a work day, Chenique already had 1,000 boxes folded and ready to go. His old manager was stunned, the most anyone had done was 500. By the next day, he folded 2,000. He was promoted to assistant manager and worked full-time for 13 years, teaching jujitsu all the while on the weekends. After being pitched a $10,000 raise at a competing company, he was let go just a year shortly after accepting the offer. His wife Rita did not waste time in offering her support and another job opportunity. “She said ‘you lost your job didn’t you? Now you can do martial arts for a living’,” expressed Chenique.

Tropical Letter Carrier Holding Corp. opens offices in M. Lakes By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff The Tropical Letter Carrier Holding Corporation has opened up temporary facilities in Miami Lakes Business Park West at 14361 Commerce Way. The corporation was first incorporated in the 1950s by labor union members of the United States Postal Service. The National Association of Letter Carriers, or NALC, represents nearly 300,000 working and retired city letter carriers nationwide. In South Florida, Branch 1071 represents 5,000 of these letter carriers from Lake Worth to Homestead (excluding Ft. Lauderdale, Dania and Davie.) The organization was established as an individual entity to provide facilities for the branch’s elected members to manage the business of the union, which included representing members, training union representatives and scheduling meetings. Mark Travers, president of the branch, serves as a consultant to the board of directors. He is also a member of Branch 1071. “The NALC is not a for-profit organization,” Travers says. “It’s rather a labor union negotiating a labor contract and representing its members in disputes with their employer, the Postal Service.” Since 1963, the Holding Corporation was stationed in Wynwood. However, in late 2015, the building was sold and

Pace dedicates newly named Delgado Stadium PAGE 18

MARCH 2, 2018

By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) recently celebrated the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the newly-named baseball field. The stadium now displays the name Delgado Stadium Spartan Field, a contribution made possible by the generosity of two Pace Alumni. Danny Delgado, a 1997 Pace graduate, was the pitcher of the Spartan varsity baseball team before joining the Seattle Mariners for 6 years. He eventually retired due to a shoulder injury and is now a thriving real estate investor. His wife, Kristina BergollaDelgado is also a Pace alumna from the class of 1998. She was the captain of the Pace cheerleading team, is a former attorney and now a successful health and fitness coach with Team Beachbody. In 2015, the high school sweethearts realized that together they wanted to begin a journey of philanthropy. They

decided that the best place to start would be at the place where their story and relationship began. They reached out to their high school alma mater and together with Pace’s Director of Development, Celia Rouco, the couple worked to achieve Delgado’s dream of leaving behind a legacy for future Spartans and their two young children, Marli and DJ. “It is a blessing to have alumni with a spirit of giving like Danny and Kristina who believe in Catholic education, and how they will be able to impact the lives of young students,” said Rouco. For months, they worked out the details and anxiously looked forward to finally seeing their name above the baseball stadium entrance. They did not stop there, as they felt it would be important to make sure they could provide the gift of Catholic education to future Spartans, and established an academic scholarship for deserving students.

On February 10, surrounded by family and friends, the school celebrated this proud moment with a ribbon cutting ceremony, coincidentally on Delgado’s 40th birthday. Making this day even more special was the presence of someone who watched Delgado’s career take flight, head coach Tom Duffin, who alongside the Pace baseball team in their pin-striped uniforms, were there to share in the joyful occasion. “I got to play on this field for four amazing years, some of the best years of my life,” said Delgado. “Under these lights is where it all made sense.” Following his injury that unfortunately ended his professional career, he felt a great void. Giving back to the place where he met his wife and propelled his career, Delgado said “Looking up and seeing my family’s last name, I know I will forever be linked to the game that I love.” He reminded young athletes that the game of baseball has a “shelf life,” whether that might be at the high school, collegiate or professional level. He encouraged them to enjoy each day while always playing their absolute best. The collective of Pace is grateful to know that they were able to share in this chapter of the Delgado family’s story and to have been able to witness the dream of leaving behind an indelible legacy for future Spartan generations.

Eight area high school graduates making impact on STU team

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Eight St. Thomas University baseball players who graduated from Miami Lakes area high schools, are making a big impact for the Bobcats during their 2018 season. The Bobcats (11-2) are seeking a return to the NAIA College World Series, where they fell one inning short of winning the national championship in 2016. Last year, St. Thomas lost in the NAIA Championships as the No. 2 ranked team. Former American High pitchers Danger Guevara and Tyler Morales, Mater Lakes alumni Rene Arauz and former Barbara Goleman player Ramid Alvarez are among the aces for head coach Jorge Perez, giving the Bobcats depth at a position that will determine how far the No. 9 ranked NAIA team can advance. Facing Claflin University and YOUNG ATHLETES can compete in MLBʼs Pitch, Hit and Barry University last month, Arauz, a sophomore, fanned Run event at the Optimist Club on March 18. eight batters, while Morales struck out two hitters from Barry University and Nova Southeastern University. Arauz also gave up eight hits in the two games. contest before the Bobcats squandered a 10-0 lead. St. Thomas lost the game 1211 on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Former Barbara Goleman infielder Erick Delgado is also on the 2018 roster for St. Thomas. The University of North Georgia transfer recorded a .500 batting average with 17 hits and 12 runs scored against Florida Memorial University, a pair of double-headers against Claflin University and Barry University, and a showdown with Nova Southeastern University. Last week, he was the Golden Rake recipient of the game against Florida National University, batting 1-for-3 with a three run home run to lift his team to a 8-3 victory. Redshirt sophomore infielder Gus Guerra, who graduated from Pace, is expected to be used a lot this season for his speed and hitting, and he plays solid defense. Freshmen pitcher Michael Pope-Diaz, who graduated from American High, is ready when called upon to take the mound, and former Mater Academy outfielder Michael Sanchez, a junior, is solid with his bat and base running. In his 10th season as St. Thomas head coach, Perez is looking to guide the Bobcats to a 10th consecutive appearance in the Sun Conference Tournament and a seventh berth in the NAIA National Tournament.

Mater Lakes wrestling team finishes as runner-up to HML in District tournament Hialeah Miami Lakes High’s wrestling team won the 16-A District Championship, while Mater Lakes Academy was the Class 1A District runner-up and Dual Team district runner-up. The Bears also set a school record with five individual District champions. HML and Mater Lakes will compete in the regionals with a berth at the state championships at stake. For Mater Lakes, the Bears also qualified all 12 wrestlers to the regional tournament at Cardinal Gibbons High School. Cole Schwartzberg (three time district champion), Rafael Alvarez, Steven Altamirano, Haniel Suris, and David Alvarez all claimed individual district titles. Omar Armengol placed second losing an extremely tight bout with state contender

Darian Estevez from Somerset Academy Chapel Trail. Armengol and Estevez will likely meet in a highly anticipated Regional final matchup this weekend. Justin Zerbinati also placed second in his first ever District tournament. Douglas Boutemy and Gonzalo Perez finished third. Dylan Lanning, Jorge Rodriguez, and Ethan Vergara all placed fourth to advance to the Regional tournament. “I cannot wait to see the result for the Regional tournament because I know we will have several of our wrestlers place for state. We have five seniors on the team, and they will be greatly missed next season, but they have set a foundation for years to come at Mater Lakes,” exclaimed coach Brandon Neifeld.

Mater Lakes basketball team wins second consecutive District title THE MIAMI LAKER

After the boys’ basketball teams from Mater Lakes Academy, Mater Academy and Hialeah Gardens High won their district championships, only one team remains alive in the regional with a trip to the state championships on the line. Mater Academy (18-5) defeated Cooper City, 79-57, to advance to the regional semifinal to face McArthur (14-15). McArthur beat Hialeah Miami Lakes, 54-50, to earn the match-up with the Lions. Mater Lakes Academy (228), which won back-to-back district titles and went undefeated in district play for two consecutive seasons, wasn’t so lucky, as the Bears lost to Calvary Christian Academy, 60-50, in

the regional quarterfinal. The Bears’ top players for the season were Cyrus Largie with 20 PPG, Dominic Rivera and Julian Garciawith 12 PPG, and Craif Starks Jr. with 10 PPG and 8 rebounds per game. “We are extremely excited where our program is headed,” said coach Juan Urbina. “Seventy five percent of our season production and experience will return next season right in time for the grand opening of our new gym.” Christian Academy (15-12) faces University (29-1) in the semifinal after University, which is ranked No. 2 in the state, defeated Pace, 81-54, to advance to the next round. Hialeah Gardens High (19-8)

lost to Miramar, 85-57 in the first round of the regional tournament, ending the Gladiators’ season. In girls’ basketball, Pace lost to Cardinal Gibbons, (47-34) in the regional quarterfinal, ending the Spartans’ season. Current Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGSHS) seniors Carolina Machin, Kassandra Rodriguez, Ivelys Rodriguez, Lauren Toledo, Dayanis Oliva and Sergio Reyes are this year’s Silver Knight nominees. Carolina Machin has been named Journalism Student of the Year for the last two years. Additionally, she is the editorin-chief of the school’s yearbook and the Student Government (SGA) secretary. On top of having a 4.0 grade point average (GPA), she’s also taking 10 advanced placement (AP) classes and has completed a 24-page long research paper. “I am proud to represent my school and my Cuban heritage as the nominee in the World Language category,” Machin said. Ivelys Rodriguez’s passion has always been theatre, which has earned her the position of this year’s nominee in the Drama category. As a future freshman at Florida International University, Rodriguez’s goal is to become a professional stage manager. She has been actively chasing her dream at BGSHS. She’s been a vital part of their theatre community for the last four years. Lauren Toledo has an unweighted GPA of 4.0 with an impressive weighted amount of 5.264. She is the vice president of Science National Honor Society and she also participates in Beta Club, National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. She is the nominee in the Science category and is president and founder of the Youth Movement Against Alzheimer’s Club, which she created with her sister. The club is the first of its kind in Florida, and as a new chapter, they’ve accomplished raising $260 at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. They even made small crafts for an assisted living facility and created a “memory wall” which was an interactive board where other students can post their favorite memories on it. Dayanis Oliva is in the top five percent of the class and the Athletics category nominee. She is the historian for SGA and the treasurer of the Youth Move-

ment Against Alzheimers. She’s a varsity volleyball player and captain of the girl's varsity flag football team. She partnered with Don Shula’s Athletic Club as part of her service project, and in doing so, she helped younger children ages 6-12 become better athletes. She spent hours playing and practicing sports like soccer, volleyball, tennis and football with her group of pupils. Aside from teaching them the basic rules of the games, Oliva also taught her sport campers teamwork, commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and respect. In addition to athleticism, she also stressed the importance of a good education. She not only served as a coach, but as a teacher, care provider and friend. Sergio Reyes started attending BGSHS mid-way through his junior year of high school in search for a better baseball program. His personal project that earned him the nomination in the Athletics category was helping Little League baseball athletes. Reyes instilled fundamental skills, hardwork and dedication skills that would help them not only on the field, but in every other aspect of their future. “Baseball has taught me so much, and it’s best to pass down my knowledge to the next generation of athletes,” Reyes said. Kassandra Rodriguez was nominated for the Silver Knight Award because of her project titled Sonrisas del Corzon (smiles from the heart, in English). Because of her work, she is nominated in the Social Sciences category. She has been tirelessly raising money to donate to an orphanage in Honduras that takes care of HIV-affected children. Rodriguez first started fundraising in January 2016 and has successfully raised $2,000. Rodriguez is the class of 2018 SGA secretary, the Inspiration Yearbook lifestyle editor since May 2015, and she holds leadership positions in the Science National Honor Society and BETA club. She has also earned Best Editor and Breakthrough Designer awards for her work in the yearbook. She is the Summa Cum Laude for her class.

NBC 6 reporter Darryl Forges visits M. L. Educational Center PAGE 24

MARCH 2, 2018

By Gabriella Licona and Devin Dubon Special to The Miami Laker Darryl Forges, a reporter for NBC 6, visited Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) newsroom on January 25, and discussed journalism, work ethic and the 24-hour news cycle with students who run the school newspaper, The Harbinger. Forges’s news reel, a compilation of his latest work, ranging from crime scene coverage to a ‘punny’ segment of Zoo Miami’s yearly Zoo Doo event was testament to the unpredictability of a journalist’s day. “Every day is different,” said Forges, who may begin his day covering an accident on the Palmetto before driving to cover a mayor’s speech, then a protest, then a shooting. The only thing that he knows for sure when his alarm clock goes off at 2:30 a.m., is that he has no idea how the day will go. And it is exactly that creative chaos, and his newly discovered love of a Cuban Colada, that fuels him through those predawn hours. However, his adventure almost didn’t happen. After graduating from the University of West Georgia, Forges had trouble finding work. It took him seven months, he said, to land his first job. But, he worked through the selfdoubt and he eventually became

Twelve Pace High seniors accepted by University of Florida for the fall semester

By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) announced that 12 of its Spartan seniors have been accepted to attend the University of Florida (UF) in the fall semester of 2018. The students accepted are Eudens Antoines, Tajmara Antoines, Myriam Dominique, Sharon Flores, Aleisha Fleurantine, Grace Li, Keanu Orfano, Alexander Pereda, Mikeiveka Sanon, Matthew Schaffer, Joshua Toledo and Nickolas Valdes. This group of well-rounded DARRYL FORGES, a reporter for NBC 6 in Miami, talks to students have not only excelled journalism students at Miami Lakes Educational Center. academically during their time a reporter for the CBS affiliate in Alabama, where he had the opportunity to report on several significant and historic events. “I had the opportunity to cover President Obama’s visit to Selma for the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, and the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott,” Forges said. Forges covered politics and tragedy. He was “threatened with a shotgun – more than once,” and he reported on stories of victory and loss. Before moving to Miami, Forges won several awards including an Alabama Broadcasters Association Award, as well as two

Associated Press Awards and had the amazing experience of rushing through a red carpet interview with John Legend to interview Oprah Winfrey. Early in his career, Forges tried to emulate other journalists, like Lester Holt. It was not until he embraced his own voice, that his career really began. “There are a lot of people in this world who don’t want to be themselves because they’re afraid of standing out. Find yourself, know who you are,” Forges said. His biggest advice? “Believe in yourself, and always listen to your teachers.”

at Pace, but they have also been involved in extracurricular activities like honor societies, clubs, athletics, and campus ministry. It is an exciting time for the Pace family as more college acceptance letters are expected to continue to come in over the next couple of months. Soon, students will begin to make final decisions about the next steps in their academic path. University of Florida is one of the state schools that Pace visited during the school’s annual Florida College tours. Pace College Tours will take place once again in the fall for juniors and seniors.

TWELVE STUDENTS from Pace High School have been accepted at the University of Florida, and will begin in the fall. Gabriella Mestre is a junior at Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGSHS) who is raising money for homeless awareness in her community. To combat these issues, she started an initiative in her school called Teens Against Homelessness (TAH). Mestre emphasizes the problem of homelessness across communities in South Florida, and believes that the problem could easily be eradicated if people come together to help one another. “In just Miami-Dade county, there are thousands of homeless people,” expressed Mestre. “I firmly believe that no one chooses to be homeless, sometimes people just have a problem and they need help to rise above it. I want to make a difference in the lives of these people.” GABRIELLA MESTRE pictured posing in front of Barbara Mestre hopes to spread this Goleman High Schoolʼs Gators mural. initiative to other high schools across the nation. Pace High School seniors participate in traditional class trip abroad to Canada By Raquel Edmundson Special to the Miami Laker Just before the President’s Day weekend, members of Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s (Pace) Class of 2018, participated in a highly anticipated annual tradition, the senior class trip to Canada. After months of planning and coordinating just the right winter attire, 54 seniors and seven chaperones made up of faculty and administrators, boarded a plane to Canada. For many, it was their very first time traveling out of the country to become immersed in French Canadian culture while enjoying some fun winter activities. It has been a part of Pace’s history for nearly 40 years. During the 4-day trip, the students stayed at the Edphy International Nature Center, better known as “Camp Edphy”, which is located at the foot of the Laurentians Mountains in Southern Quebec. Here the

group got to know their camp counselors, and embarked on a unique adventure while creating some fun, unforgettable memories. Students had a chance to try ice skating, skiing, snow tubing and had some good old fashioned snow ball fights. They shared meals, toured the cities of Montreal and Quebec, visited the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral and participated in Sunday mass at St. Norbert Catholic Church in Quebec before heading back to South Florida. For nearly four decades, this unique trip has not only served as an educational experience, but has also strengthened friendships and camaraderie among the Pace seniors as their final days of high school draw near. The school is proud of this tradition and plans on continuing the senior trip to Canada for many years to come.
