Com. Bovo endorses 154th Street Bridge Park Vol. 45, No. 6

305-817-4078

MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes’ efforts to build a bridge park over N.W. 154 Street just got a major boost from Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. Bovo endorsed the town’s proposed project despite talks the county is planning to place an I-75 interchange at Miami Lakes Drive to alleviate traffic congestion for Hialeah residents. Miami Lakes threatened legal action against the county if it proceeds with any plans to open up the bridge without its input since the town and Hialeah have a legal binding agreement to keep the roadway closed. The agreement stemmed from Hialeah’s successful quest to annex a large piece of land west of Miami Lakes in 2004. During a press conference near the site of the proposed project, Bovo said the town has his full support for the bridge park. “As county commissioner

serving this area, I commit to the council and mayor that I will be supportive of their efforts to make a park here for resident to use and enjoy,” said Bovo, who was flanked by Mayor Manny Cid, Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez, Councilmembers Josh Dieguez and Carlos Alvarez, Town Manager Edward Pidermann and Deputy Town Manager Tony Lopez. “I’m hoping that something will be here for generations to come.” Bovo, who’s rumored to be running for county mayor in 2020, acknowledged Rodriguez, who’s the brainchild for the bridge park. “It was something he saw in another community and basically recreated it here,” Bovo said. “I will be supporting the town’s effort to make a park here.” Cid said Bovo’s support is a big victory for Miami Lakes. “Today is a great day for the Town of Miami Lakes as this project continues to move forward,” Cid said. “The entire

The 5th annual Miami Lakes Cars for Cure which raises cancer awareness and money to help fight the deadly disease is scheduled for Sunday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Main Street. With Hialeah Park Racing and Casino as a new partner, the event features a concert at the park at 7 p.m., Friday, April 5. Scheduled to perform are 1980s and 1990s music legends Erotic Exotic, Man Trap, Coro, Angel A-Love and D.J. Santana. More than 250 classic cars will be on display on Main Street for the classic car show as participants will enjoy live entertainment and food, while honoring Miami Lakes’ first Vice Mayor, Roberto Alonso who brought the event to the

town before he succumbed to cancer. All the proceeds from the event benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Roberto Alonso Jr., the event’s organizer, said bringing two families and two communities together for a “great” cause is something he envisioned for a long time. The Graham family developed Miami Lakes and the Brunetti family owns the park and casino. Since the event started, Alonso said the Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure has raised about $100,000, all of it going to the cancer center. This year, he’s hoping to raise more money than before.

A Look Inside:

town council has always been behind this and having the commissioner’s support means a lot because it will change this whole area in Northwest Miami-Dade. “It’s a true game changer.” Cid, too, commended Rodriguez for his efforts to build a bridge park over N.W. 154 Street. “Vice Mayor Rodriguez saw similar projects in Ocala and other cities and how converting regional parks adds value to the communities,” Cid said, as he pointed to a rendering of the proposed bridge park. “This is what the park will look like in the future, which will connect to the western portion of Hialeah.” “A few years ago, I had the idea of turning the 154 Street bridge over 1-75 into a linear park,” Rodriguez said. “A big thanks goes to our present and previous council members as well as to our town staff who have never given up on this project. And a big thanks to

Breakfast crowd happy that Mayor’s Cafe is open PAGE 2

MARCH 15, 2019

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff The highly anticipated Mayor’s Cafe located at 15478 N.W. 77 Court in the Royal Oaks Shopping Center has announced its grand opening for April 1. The Cafe began with a soft opening for family and word quickly got out. With so many people hearing about it they decided to extend their soft opening from Monday - Friday for the time being. Starting April 1, the Cafe will be opening seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mayor’s Cafe is a family friendly environment and that is exactly what the owners intended. Mayor Manny Cid, Miami Lakes Councilmember Jeffrey Rodriguez and Danny Delgado have all known each other for many years and partnering together was an easy choice,

THE MIAMI LAKER

they wanted to keep this within the family. Mayor’s Cafe is decorated with a comfortable home-style feel and with pictures of their families located in the Mayor’s Corner. Mayor’s Cafe wants to make every patron feel welcome and make their experience an enjoyable one. Although there is a Mayor’s Cafe in Pembroke Pines, this one is completely different. The idea for Mayor’s Cafe first came in 2017 and has been in the works since then. The owners saw the need for a breakfast place in The Town of Miami Lakes because there is no other place like this around town. The location was an easy choice as it is essentially in the “middle” of Miami Lakes and has easy access to the highways nearby. “What better way to bring a

community together than to break bread” explained Cid. Their goal is to keep residents in Miami Lakes instead of having them travel to a breakfast destination. Delgado came on board a few months ago as he and his wife brought many new ideas and energy to the table including design. The location was completely redesigned inside, with the addition of a brick wall with their logo which was hand painted by artists Chalk & Brush. Overall this has been a team effort on everyone’s part, the owners see each other equally and rely heavily on the help and support of their families. They like to see Mayor’s Cafe as an extension of their own family. “I value the people I am going into business with” said Delgado. The owners are eager to help as soon as they walk in, they greet patrons and get behind the counter to serve drinks, take orders, anything it takes to help out. They consider themselves as a team and family with their employees. Mayor’s Cafe is unique and isn’t just another restaurant, they’re truly a family. environment. The Autism Soccer Walk comes on the heels of a historic development in Florida’s autism awareness movement. A bill proposed by state senator Annette Taddeo recently passed, officially recognizing April 1-7 as Autism Soccer Awareness Week in Florida. During the week, Floridians are encouraged to support children with autism to engage in sports, including soccer, in order to emphasize the value of teamwork and to help them build self-confidence. “All is needed is love, patience and compassion to create room for those whose abilities might be a little different than ours” said Oscar Amuz, founder and president of Autism Soccer Foundation when asked about his motivation to organize the Autism Soccer Walk. Council adopts Blasting Committee suggestions THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Wasting no time since the group was formed two weeks ago, the Miami Lakes Blasting Advisory Committee hammered out a list of solutions the town hopes Florida legislators will consider in an effort to control the blasting. For years, area residents have complained the rock mining industry’s explosions to make materials to build and repair roads and expressways caused damages to their homes and outside properties. Miami Lakes elected voices and other residents shared their gut wrenching stories to state lawmakers but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Now, Miami Lakes may have an advantage this year, as Speaker of the House Jose Olivia is a Miami Lakes resident who may be affected by the blasting as well. Armed with committee’s recommendations, council members are preparing to travel to Tallahassee along with a group of residents and lobby state lawmakers to make changes to the blasting regulations. At a special meeting last week, the Town Council adopt-

ed the blasting committee’s recommendations and added a few of their own to present during the 60-day Legislative Session. The committee suggested placing mining monitoring devices in multiple sites throughout the town; reduce the legal limit of energy waves created by blasting to 7 inches/seconds.; transfer the authority from the state’s Fire Marshall office to local municipalities within the five areas of the state; and ask the state to extend the statutes of limitation to 36 months. The committee also recommended to expand homeowners insurance coverage to include damages caused by the blasting. Council members added several recommendations of their own including opposing any bill that would increase the rates of homeowners insurance if coverage is expanded for blasting, and reinstated a bus trip to the State Capitol which was canceled due to lack of participation. Claudia Luces, a member of the Blasting Advisory Committee, said only 24 residents registered for the bus trip, which was not enough to voice their concerns to lawmakers. “Canceling the bus trip was

the wrong thing to do,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “We have worked on this to get residents inside the House. “I’ll be going on the bus trip because that’s a promise I made.” Councilmember Joshua Dieguez said the bus trip is important to lobby legislators on an important issue. “Most of the legislators who sit on the committees live in North Florida and are not affected by the blasting damages,” he said. “They need to hear from us talking about the damages so they can understand it.” Councilmember Luis Collazo said Olivia may share the same blasting experience as a resident and he’s the best shot to control the blasting. ”I think he knows how important this issue is to us,” he said. Collazo said the purpose of the bus trip wasn’t clear enough when Miami Lakes initially sought residents to travel to Tallahassee. “The most effective weapon is getting residents there in the faces of our legislators,” he said. “If we storm the Capitol, then good. But let’s make sure we know the purpose of the trip.”

Residents are hoping the committee’s recommendations would be included in any blasting bill State Senator Manny Diaz may sponsor this year. Most residents thanked Councilmember Marilyn Ruano who sponsored legislation to create the Blasting Advisory Committee. Abel Fernandez said Ruano listened to their concerns and acted right away. “During a meet and greet she

listened to our problems and championed the issue,” he said. “And the movement is growing.” Ruano said to her surprise blasting was the top concern among residents while she campaigned for political office. “I knew the top issues were traffic and schools but the most important issue was blasting,” she said. “We needed a committee to address this important issue.”

Angela Medina leads local Stuttering Assoc. chapter THE MIAMI LAKER

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Angela Medina, who currently resides in Miami Lakes, was born and raised in Palm Springs North. While doing her Masters she had the chance to work with children who have autism, she then stumbled upon the field of speech pathology. When she was finishing up her Masters she was able to do a Ph.D program in Louisiana where she was able to do research and earn her certification in speech pathology. While in Louisiana her research was focused on autism, however she met an 18 year old bilingual who stuttered and that totally changed her path, she felt it was her calling in life. Medina then moved back to Miami Lakes and became a professor at Florida International University (FIU). She works in the Communications and Sciences Disorder Department with a focus on bilinguals who stutter. Medina wanted to do more, she started researching and looking for places where people who stutter meet. In 2013 the closest place was in Boca Raton. When she visited, she

noticed most people were from Miami. She quickly realized that there was a need for a place for people who stutter in Miami-Dade County. By the time she started working at FIU she found the Miami Chapter of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) which at the time was lead by a gentleman in Wynwood and eventually Medina took over. Since November 2015, Medina has been running the program and this is the only one in Miami-Dade County. Medina created an enviroment for people who stutter where they can come and talk together once a month about what is going on in their lives, what they did that past month and most importantly be a support system for each other. The group meets at FIU’s main campus on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m, for ages 18 and older. “I hope to change their lives, I love seeing the change in them from one meeting to five months later, the condfidence built, said Medina. She is very passionate about what she does and absolutely loves it. For more information on meetings

Freebee service replaces Town’s Moover buses starting April 1

The Town of Miami Lakes announced that effective April 1, the Moover bus service will be replaced by all Freebee service. The changes include: • Switching from Fixed Route service to full on-demand ridesharing service. • Adding a new ADA accessible larger vehicle to the Freebee fleet that holds up to 10 passengers allowing the Town to have 3 Freebees circulating. • The larger Freebee will be able to access the parts of the town that are currently not serviced due to speed limit restric-

tions. These areas include N.W. 67 Avenue north of Miami Lakeway to N.W. 167 Street, and the northeast business district near Costco and Miami Lakes Educational Center. • New hours will be Monday to Friday, 6:15 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. • Rides can be requested via the RideFreebee app or by calling 305-901-9500. The Moover buses are aging and experiencing more frequent breakdowns causing interruptions to the service. Miami Lakes has experienced a loss in

ridership on the Moover since residents are beginning to use the Freebee as they are more reliable. All of the Freebee cars are new and all electric which provides an environmental benefit and electric vehicles do not require the amount of maintenance that combustion engines need and operate more efficiently. Shula’s Athletic Club starts renovation project PAGE 8

MARCH 15, 2019

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Shula’s Athletic Club, located at 15150 Bull Run Road, recently renovated some areas of the club. It’s been over 20 years since they’ve had such a large renovation. Members and newcomers can now walk into a revamped cardio section featuring new flooring, painting, wallpaper and brand new 80 inch televisions. A complete new visual audio system is also in place. The second floor of the gym has also been re-painted and there is new strength training equipment with future plans for more upgrades. The club also offers its own line of merchandise, located in the main level. Shula’s Athletic Club welcomes anyone to join even if they’re part of another gym, with their “let’s trade” promotion which waives the initiation fee. They have their own app that is quick and easy to use, members can easily scan themselves in, check class schedules and even set reminders. Six Cub Scouts earn Arrow of Light as Pack 660 marks 50th year As Miami Lakes Cub Scout Pack 660 celebrates its 50th anniversary, six of the pack’s longtime members have earned Cub Scouting’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light. The scouts are all fifth graders who have been with the pack for a number of years. During that time, they have learned and perfected camping skills, knots, Scouting lore, first aid, citizenship requirements, physical fitness, community service and much more. This has prepared them for a Board of Review in which they had to individually demonstrate their knowledge and defend their ideas in front of a governing board of adults. In describing his journey to the Arrow of Light, Aidan Schwinghammer said, “It was incredibly hard but worth it!” Den leader Sean Schwinghammer made it clear: “Boys need to be challenged when they are young so they can more easily take on larger challenges in the future. Achieving the Arrow of Light takes years and commitment and these boys were exemplary in earning the award and the praise that goes with it.” The achievements were cele-

The team’s assistant coach, Rey Hernandez, said the kids are pumped up while preparing for the Disney tournament. “They are getting ready for the

The final score of the game was 108-85. Led by the number 3 scorer in Miami-Dade County, senior Cyrus Largie (24.3 ppg) was able to lead Mater Lakes to a three-peat. This season has taken the team across the country as well including California to face off against an elite high school competition. It was an excellent season with a rewarding ending for departing players including Hanley Poy, Cesar Linarez, Landon Martinez, Kamani Butler, Pablo Marchany and Jason Blanco. This is not the end for the Mater Lakes Bears as the future looks promising with young players such as Dominic Rivera and Julian Garcia to keep the success going for years to come.

MLEC honors Yordanka Mezawi as 2019 Teacher of the Year PAGE 16

MARCH 15, 2019

By Daniel Gonzalez III Special to The Miami Laker Although Yordanka Mezawi is an English teacher, she can usually be found doing much more than teaching. From preparing over 30 students for a national debate competition in Washington D.C., to helping and mentoring new and incoming teachers, she does it all. This year, Mezawi teaches advanced placement language and composition as well as ninth grade English literature. But in the 15 years that she has taught high school at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC), she’s taught just about every English, reading and literature course imaginable. In that time, this is the second time that teachers have nominated her as MLEC’s Teacher of the Year. “There’s just so much fierce competition,” she said. “This school is filled with amazing teachers that are all so selfless and talented, but to be named twice and win for the second time really validates what I do.” Every year, Mezawi coordinates a field trip for the Junior State of America (JSA) club to travel to Washington D.C. to compete in debate competitions with schools around the nation and every year it’s a success, as

THE MIAMI LAKER

YORDANKA MEZAWI evidenced by the numerous awards they come back with. “When Mezawi became the sponsor of JSA, she made it her mission to include as many students as possible, to show them how big the world really is and to introduce them to all the opportunities that are out there for them,” said Neyda Borges, English Department chair. “So many of our students have never travelled more than 10 miles from their homes. Some lack the resources or finances. Mezawi works hard to help kids earn scholarships, to show them just how much they can achieve.”

Mezawi has provided countless students with opportunities, not just to attend conferences and competitions, but to attend prestigious summer programs at some of the top colleges and universities in the country. “She is truly a selfless teacher” said Katheryne Mena, a sophomore in the IT academy. “She made learning fun and you could really tell she cared about us. I felt like she really understood us and went out of her way to make personal connections with each of us.” This dedication is evident. Step into her classroom as she helps her students dissect the rhetorical devices in a Martin Luther King, Jr. speech or understand the figurative language in Homer’s Odyssey and the passion for her work is palpable. Watch her cheer on her JSA students at debate competitions and her enthusiasm is contagious. “Whether she is teaching argumentation or Greek mythology, preparing students for the FSA or the AP exam, Mezawi works to help her students be the best version of themselves and more importantly to believe in the power of their dreams,” said Borges.

Lawton Chiles Middle School restarts its dormant band program for 2019

Lawton Chiles Middle School (LCMS) has a new band director, Harold Hankerson, who has helped the program really take off. A tremendous outpouring of support from parents and help from EESAC funding has made it possible to make much needed repairs to damaged instruments and purchase new uniforms for the students in preparation for their music performance assessment this spring. Band students have embraced the challenge of getting ready for band evaluation. They are reenergized and excited about going to band class. They walk into the band room every morn-

ing and a multitude of students are warming up on their instruments, playing their scales and rehearsing their parts. “It’s so cool to hear kids practicing in the school’s courtyard after school.” said principal Stephanie M. Tudor. The possibilities are endless for this once dwindling music program. “I really love seeing kids work together towards a common goal. Creating a sense of community is big part of the vision at LCMS and what better way to do it than through music,” remarked, Gisel Sanchez, Electives Department chair.

LAWTON CHILES MIDDLE SCHOOL band director Hankerson is pictured with band students Nestor Acosta, Seon Betton, Izaiah Bracewell, Tyrell Bryant, Kevin Bustabad, Joel Cabrera, Kendrick Carmant, Darryl Cozier, Frank Del-Negro, Yovani Lamarche, Yandel Lazala, Glen Miller, Jonathon Ogando, Evan Rivas, Christopher Shaw, and Mykala Tucker.

STU’s Brandon Keller interns at the White House

St. Thomas University student Brandon Keller recently did an internship at The White House during his fall semester. Keller got the oppurtunity by committing himself to public service extensively. He first started by interning with the U.S. Treasury Department in Miami, becoming student president, interning for Senator Marco Rubio and volunteering to help struggling students at Carol City Middle School. The experience made

Keller want to pursue a career in politics and law because he saw first-hand how much policies from the U.S. Government affects individuals. Keller was one of the only Hispanic interns within the Office of Presidential Correspondence. There they received mail and emails and responded appropriately on behalf of the Administration. “It was a pretty surreal experience stated Keller.

GableStage brings Hamlet to life at M.L. Edu. Center By Samantha Jimenez Special to The Miami Laker One of the longest running and most highly acclaimed live theaters in South Florida, GableStage, brought Hamlet to life on March 6 at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). The play is one of Shakespeare’s most loved and well known tragedies. But this production was different. The GablesStage adaptation, titled “AKA Hamlet,: brought the 400 year old play into the 21 century. The original Hamlet is about a man that seeks revenge after his father’s death. Hamlet faces other challenges, such as his mother remarrying (his uncle) and his complicated relationship with Ophelia. “AKA Hamlet” takes the classic scenes and interrupts them, breaking the fourth wall and speaking with and to the audience, incorporating monologues that relate the story to younger generations. “They all have many conflicts just like us,” said Charles Sothers, the actor who played Hamlet. “Whether it’s a boyfriend or girlfriend, or friends, or death, we can all relate to it.” The actors themselves expressed why they and their director, Phillip M. Church, enjoy performing the play to high schoolers, teenagers can relate to Hamlet, to his struggles, to his suffering. “We can all relate to trusting a friend and it turns out that they’re untrust-

worthy,” said Erynn Chapman, who played Ophelia. “And we end up fighting these situations with all different sorts of violence.” After the play was over, the actors took a few questions from MLEC students. One of those questions was over the interpretation of the death of Ophelia. “I feel like she slips accidentally but I don’t think she fights the drowning,” said Chapman. “You don’t have to accept it as suicide or accidental. It takes us back to childhood and our own imagination and interpretation,” said Sothers, who stresses that it allows viewers and readers, to decide for themselves or, at least, to grapple with the possibilities. Jaguars agreed with the cast and crew, finding that “AKA Hamlet” applied to their own lives and found interest in the plot and its relevance. Besides the play itself, people were also intrigued by the changes that the GablesStage production made to the set design, modernizing the play. “It was very interesting to see how they incorporated technology into Shakespeare,” said Poveda. “That’s something I would’ve never thought about but it works really well together.” This twist on Hamlet brought to light the message of violence and pain and listening to others to avoid such irrational acts.

a vital tool that educates students for a higher level of learning and critical thinking. MCH students are taught through a Godly driven curriculum alongside the STEM program which includes Robotics and Spanish. As the students interact with robots in the classroom and make them perform various motions and tasks, their many different strengths start to shine. Assembling robots in teams and working solutions out in a group format allows for students to dig deep within themselves and discover new strengths and talents. Technology is changing the way people do things in early part of the world and the sector continues to expand. Educators must embrace the latest skills

and knowledge for effective teaching which is why MCH embraces robotics in learning methodologies. MCH is working on adding additional STEM-based programs for the next school year. The Montessori philosophy aligns with STEM by pursuing STEM goals and by maintaining a low student-to-teacher ratio in the classroom. Interested parents are invited to call and make arrangements to tour the school and visit the classrooms. Contact Elementary Directress Melissa M.
