Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church (OLL) will be hosting its 45th annual Spring Festival on the school's grounds at 15801 N.W. 67 Avenue from March 7 through 10. Families looking for a funfilled day can stroll through the main section and play games. Local businesses will also be participating with exhibits for carnival attendees to stop by for dinner. The food court features an array of the best international food booths including Latin, Cuban, Mexican, Italian, Jamaican, Colombian, Filipino, BBQ, American, Spanish Tapas and much more. “Due to its well-earned reputation, increasing numbers of people attend the festival to eat some of the most diverse and incredibly delicious food made fresh especially for attendees,” said food booth chairperson Diane Pantaleon. More than 20 popular carnival rides and attractions will thrill people of all ages, including toddlers in the special kiddy ride section. Carnival-goers can see Miami Lakes from the top of

the Giant Ferris Wheel, listen to loud music at high speeds on The Orbiter and experience the thrill on the Kamikaze. Young people can scramble through fun houses, climb aboard a pirate ship and play carnival games. “If you come to our Festival, you are guaranteed to have a great time!” said Father Jose Alvarez. The main stage is full of different live shows and performances throughout the weekend. Music will fill the nights with live bands and DJs. On Sunday afternoon, which is family day, the children’s talent show will take place with performances from dance studios in the area. The Miami Lakes Planning and Zoning Board last week approved an ordinance to amend the town’s land development code to post human trafficking awareness signs in commercial areas, hotels, apartment buildings and parks and recreation centers in the town. The measure is to help law enforcement crack down on Human Trafficking which has become a growing problem in Florida. Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker. Many of the victims are teenagers, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

According to Miami Lakes town attorney Lorenzo Coibella, a human trafficking ring was operating in the town several years ago and was shut down following a federal investigation which resulted in multiple arrests and saved many of the victims from further exploitation. Miami Lakes’ new ordinance calls for human trafficking awareness signs to be placed around commercial areas, hotels, motels, non-transient apartments, transient apartments, night clubs, massage pallors, and parks and recreation facilities. All signs will be printed in English and Spanish. The awareness signs will be placed where they can be easily seen by business employees, residents and visitors, and they are urged to report any signs of human trafficking. The town’s Code Compliance department, in conjunction with the police, will enforce the provisions of the new code and upon conviction of such offense violators will be punished with a fine not to exceed $500. A continued violation for each day shall be considered a separate offense, the ordinance says. Human trafficking should be reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888, or text INFO or HELP to 233-733, or call the local police.

Theatre Review:

Main Street Players present RACE now to March 17 By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff RACE debuted February 22 at Main Street Playhouse located at 6766 Main Street. The cast took on a topic that most people struggle with in America, race. David Mamet’s RACE, directed by Lowell Williams, opened to enthusiastic audiences. The play exploits the lies people tell themselves about race. Three lawyers, two black, one white have the chance to represent a wealthy white man that is accused of a crime against a young black woman. In a series of events it becomes clear that it is not so much about the wealthy white man anymore. Everyone has an idea in their mind, even before meeting someone, if they’re going to like them or not based on their race. The play showcases this in a way that some of the characters didn’t realize this was happening to them. Many people tend to jump to conclusions based simply on race. “I use theatre to change and affect people on controversial

topics”, said Williams. The play did a great job bringing to light topics that are touchy but need to be spoken of. Sometimes one thinks they are immune to certain issues because they’ve made up that idea in their mind, until another person makes them see things through their perspective. Jack Lawson is portrayed by Christopher Dreeson, Henry Borwn is portrayed by Keith Oliver, Charles Strickland is portrayed by Brian McCormack and Susan is portrayed by Trittney Huzzie. (Warning: This play contains strong language and mature subject matter.) RACE runs through March 17 with shows Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students, seniors and military personnel. Theatre League and Industry tickets are $20 with I.D. at the door. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.mainstreetplayers.com, or at the door an hour before show time.

Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) and the Miami Lakes community are rallying to the aid of 16-year-old Danny Quesada, who’s in dire need of a double lung transplant to stay alive. Danny suffers from a lung disease that affects the tubes that carry oxygen and other gases to and out of the lungs and causes scarring of lung tissue which results from prolonged exposure to asbestos. COTA, a non-profit organization which helps children and young adults who need a lifesaving transplant by providing fundraising assistance, has teamed up with the Town of Miami Lakes to raise at least $250,000 for Danny’s surgery and other expenses and alleviate the financial burden of his family. So far, the organization has raised $150,000 through the Running with Danny fundraising program. The money also covers expenses for post-operative care such as transportation, a ventilator and pain medications while recovering from a lung transplant.

Eye Candy is ‘sweet addition’ to Main Street PAGE 8

MARCH 1, 2019

THE MIAMI LAKER

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Eye Candy, located at 6807 Main Street, opened its doors on June 1 last year. The facility is not your average optometry office, it is a boutique-style optometry office and a candy store. When you walk into Eye Candy you may not realize there is eye equipment in there somewhere because your eyes are drawn to the amazing display of candy and cute eyewear. Dr. Gianne Castellanos, owner and optometrist, first had the idea of the Eye Candy concept when she was pregnant, she wanted to eat sweets but couldn’t enjoy as much. Castellanos then thought about combining her two loves, sweets and vision and that’s when Eye Candy was born. Castellanos wanted to make eye exams fun for children and adults, patients are given candy during their examinations. Castellanos has been an optometrist for 10 years after graduating from Florida EYE CANDY is located in the heart of Miami Lakes on Main International University and Nova Southeastern University. Street

She has another practice in Miami Lakes located at 8660 N.W. 155 Street that has been open for about five years. Many visitors come in simply for candy and don’t realize they can get eye exams. Many people are drawn in by the decor and fun candies they offer. It pays to go in because each customer is greeted with a candy sample. Castellanos wants people to know “this isn’t just a cute store”. “I want people to experience what great vision truly is. I have always wanted to be an optometrist and I love being an eye doctor. At Eye Candy you'll have the sweetest experience” says Castellanos. Eye Candy offers candy from all over the world, as well as prescription eye glasses and sunglasses. They carry top brands such as RayBan, Jimmy Choo and Betsey Johnson. They also offer affordable frames and even have their own line of frames called Eye Candy - Eye Craze. Castellanos prides herself in being the “sweetest doctor in

town” as many of her clients refer to her that way. She also feels they offer some of the best eye care in town. Eye Candy is not just a place to buy cute frames or sweets, they do full eye exams, including checking for eye diseases and checking for Orthokeratology which can eliminate contacts and eye glass wear throughout the day for some patients. Many of Eye Candy’s patients are young children which Castellanos loves. She believes she is making an impact in their life by helping them with their vision at such a young age. Miami Lakes resident is Principal for the Day at Spanish Lake Long time Miami Lakes resident Maria Elena Arias, real estate broker, empire builder, business consultant, and business greatness coach though she wore many hats until she accepted the invitation to serve as Spanish Lake Elementary’s (SLE) Principal for Today. She never realized the enormous task and responsibilities of a school principal. Her day began with an early morning parent conference and leadership meeting. At 8:35 a.m., it was upstairs to morning announcements honoring “Values Matter” students of the month, honor roll recipients, Science Fair and SECME awards before 8:50 a.m. She returned to the principal’s office for preparation and assistance with emergency drills. Then she proceeded to classroom visits with participation in many learning experiences. By 11 a.m., she was ready to return to her “world”, but she truly appreciated the role of school principal. Arias gave praises to Jacqueline Arias-Gonzalez, SLE’s school principal, for her diligent management of school operations and inspiration to others as a leader. She wit-

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff For more than five years 360 TechGroup located at 13980 N.W. 58 Court, has been providing IT, copier, telecom, marketing solutions and much more to the tricounty area. 360 TechGroup started out with just three employees, Maribel Suarez, director of new business; Ernie Suarez, president and managing director and Agustin Barrios, director of business technology and they were called SpeedyIT. For about two years they focused on IT services. Today 360 TechGroup has 22 employees and they handle much more than IT. tions and services, they have CopyTech360 which is South Florida’s authorized full line Sharp dealer. They also have WireBeast which takes care of structured cabling and low voltage solutions. What sets 360 TechGroup apart from the rest is that the owners are always in the office and available to their clients, then don’t stop working at 5 p.m. on a Friday like most companies do. They make themselves available by giving their cell phone number to clients in case something comes up over the weekend. They always put their clients needs first. Copier companies are limited to the brands they can sell and sometimes the client needs a specific machine which that brand doesn’t offer. Although 360 TechGroup is an authorized Shape dealer they also sell other brands. They provide clients what they need and what works

for them, they don’t focus on the products they sell, they focus on what their clients need to help their business function properly. Everything they sell is also available to finance which is helpful to many of their clients. 360 TechGroup has several techs available to assist clients in need, most companies only have one or two techs. 360 TechGroup has a call center with a team available for any needs, if they can’t assist over the phone they will dispatch to the location for further help. 360 TechGroup prides themselves in being an all-around company that truly does everything. They built the company around the client, not the product. “We manage your technology, so you can focus on your business” says Suarez. By Devin Dubon and Gabriella Licona Special to The Miami Laker Mayor Manny Cid visited Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) in January to discuss politics, town initiatives and his own career with The Harbinger staff. A lot has changed in the last 20 years. Here, in Miami Lakes, those changes include more parks, recreational facilities and

more opportunities for community involvement, said Cid who fittingly is one of the youngest mayors of one of the youngest cities in Miami-Dade County. Cid was only 29 when he became vice mayor. “I was told not to question the status quo,” he said, “but, you have one opportunity to change the culture and the ways of city hall, and I took the risk to try and do that.” The mayor brought town hall meetings into people’s homes, streaming them live on social media and even having residents submit questions. He has worked to improve and renovate parks throughout the town as well as empowering residents, including local teenagers,

to get involved with the town and make their home better. Before his election to the town council, Cid worked as a legislative aide in Tallahassee. There, he gained experience, not just with laws, but with people, lobbyists and the political machine. The self-described “municipal nerd” immerses himself in city, town and municipal business. Because, he says, local government makes the greatest impact on people’s day to day lives. “It’s not as exciting as national politics, but far more impacting on our everyday lives – affecting our roads, drinking water and schools, just to name a few local issues.”

Miami Lakes Cars for Cure scheduled on April 7 THE MIAMI LAKER

In an effort to help increase cancer awareness and raise more money to fight the deadly disease, a local classic car show has landed a major partner. The 5th Miami Lakes Cars for Cure has teamed up with Hialeah Park Racing and Casino for this year’s event, which includes a concert at the Hialeah park in a prelude to the classic car showcase on Main Street in Miami Lakes. The concert, which features 1980s and 1990s music legends such as Erotic Exotic, Man Trap, Coro, Angel A-Love and D.J. Santana, is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, April 5, at the park’s northeast corner entrance at East 4 Avenue and 22 Street. Then, more than 250 classic

cars will be on display on Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 7, as participants will enjoy live entertainment and food, while honoring Miami Lakes’ first Vice Mayor, Roberto Alonso, who brought the event to the town before he succumbed to cancer. All the proceeds from the event benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Roberto Alonso Jr., the event’s organizer, said bringing two families and two communities together for a “great” cause is something he envisioned for a long time. The Graham family developed Miami Lakes and the Brunetti family owns the park

and casino. “It’s great for both communities who are affected by cancer,” he said. “It’s truly amazing when two families and two communities can come together to raise money and awareness for cancer.” The car show event features entertainment by local country singer Ricky Valido and Man Trap and Beer Garden’s $20 donation per car. Alonso said both events will reserve some time to remember those who died of cancer and honor cancer survivors. “This year, we have special moments to remember people who died of cancer and recognize people who have survived with the concert and car show,”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho was awarded the Miami City Ballet’s (MCB) Chairman’s Award for Leadership in Arts Education at the 2019 MCB Gala held at Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau Hotel last week. MCB Board Chair Kristi Jernigan introduced Carvalho and presented him with the

award. “Miami City Ballet has given a leg up to the youth of our community by showing them what classical dance is all about – even giving them a taste of what it is like to be a dancer – through challenging workshops and dynamic programs,” said Carvalho. “Since I began as Superintendent, we have forged partner-

ships to provide arts experiences for students.” MCB has collaborated with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as program innovators to share the ballet experience with kids who might not experience it otherwise. MCB’s Ballet Bus picks up students for classes as well as the opportunity for extended scholarships.

said Alonso, whose wife is a two-time cancer survivor. “Bringing together both communities is great strength in raising cancer awareness. We are encouraging families to come out and enjoy the day, as we continue our fight with cancer.” Alonso said he’s forever grateful for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center where doctors treated his father for cancer. He said doctors at Memorial Hospital told his father to start planning for his funeral because they couldn’t do anything to save his life. The doctors at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, however, allowed him to live a year and half longer than doctors projected. “That’s important,” Alonso said. “My father got to travel all over the world and enjoyed life. That was so important to him and my family.” Since the brith of the event, Alonso said the Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure has raised about $100,000, all of it going to the cancer center. This year, he’s hoping to raise more money than before. “The concert hopefully should raise about $50,000,” he said. “There

PAGE 13

ROBERTO ALONSO JR. are a lot of talented musicians who will be performing.” Alonso is also hoping the event helps unite Miami Lakes and Hialeah, as two communities have been divided for years. “We are all the same people fighting for the same cause.” Alonso said. “A lot of Hialeah residents spend money at Miami Lakes’ restaurants and shops. It doesn’t matter if you are from Miami Lakes, Hialeah or Opa-locka, we are in the same fight against cancer.”

MARCH 1, 2019

A week before Florida International University’s (FIU) softball season got underway, the Panthers and head coach Heather Gelbard announced the hiring of assistant coach Mia Hignojos. “I'm very excited to welcome Mia to the Panther Family,” Gelbard said. “Throughout the interview and hiring process, Mia’s open and honest communication really stood out. I expect that she will develop close relationships with our diverse roster of student-athletes, and be able to mentor them on and off the field.” Hignojos, who is an Odessa, Texas native, rounds out Gelbard's staff for the 2019 season. “I would like to thank the FIU administration and Coach Gelbard for this extraordinary opportunity,” Hignojos said. “The passion and commitment this administration and staff shows goes above and beyond. I’m excited to join this staff and continue the tradition of excellence that FIU softball has.” Hignojos graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2015 with a degree in Environmental Planning and Design. During her tenure as a Lobo, Hignojos emerged as a dynamic defensive infielder playing in 148 games, averaging a fielding percentage of .966, recording 295 putouts and 222 assists. Local schools hold vigil honoring BGEC’s fifth grade CEA win third place in Marj. Stoneman Douglas victims students ‘We the People’ competition PAGE 22

MARCH 1, 2019

On February 14 at 6:17 p.m. students from various Miami Lakes’ schools came together at Picnic Park West to pay tribute to the 17 people who lost their lives at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting last year. At the vigil, 17 students from fifth to tenth grades shared words, poetry and music focused on love, kindness and service. This vigil was initiated and led by the students themselves who coordinated the logistics and worked on the program. The idea came about from twin sisters Sophia and Susanna Inguanzo who a few weeks before started to think about a way to honor the victims of the Parkland tragedy. “We wanted to do something

THE MIAMI LAKER

that would honor their legacy – to love, be kind always and service to others”, said Sophia Inguanzo. They shared their idea with their classmates and other members of the student council at their school and began a social media campaign to invite students from all Miami Lakes area schools to attend the vigil. The outreach was successful as over 200 people attended, including Senator Bob Graham and his wife Adele, Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmembers Luis Collazo, Josh Dieguez and Marilyn Ruano, as well as various law enforcement officers from several jurisdictions. Senator Graham shared that it was “an inspirational evening led by young people in honor of

those who lost their lives so tragically last year – I am very proud of these students.” Miranda Cabarga, an eighth grade student at Bob Graham Education Center choose to read a poem written by a student who wrote it just two weeks before he passed away in Parkland. Nina Castro-Bosch, a tenth grade student at Barbara Goleman Senior High sang “Imagine” and dedicated the song to all who are victims due to gun violence. Susanna Inguanzo spoke the final words at the vigil and encouraged all students to “practice random acts of kindness often and daily and to serve others with honor.”

The fifth grade Civics Engagement Academy (CEA) students from Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) won third place in the 20182019 ‘We the People’ Competition held at the North Campus of Miami Dade Community College on February 15. This competition is generally held for middle school students in eighth grade, yet this is the second year that Miami-Dade County has conducted an elementary version of the competition for fifth grade students. BGEC has now placed twice in the top three. The primary goal of the’ We the People’ Competition is to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary and secondary students. Participants hold a simulated congressional hearing

as the culminating activity for the We the People program. The students work in cooperative teams, prepare and present statements before a panel of community representatives who act as congressional committee members. Students then answer questions posed by the committee members. The format provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles. The fifth grade CEA students thanked teachers Mercedes Mendez and Lusila Garcia who worked with them relentlessly after school in order to prepare for this important endeavor. A well deserved congratulations goes out to these students that worked very hard for their well deserved placement.

Pace High School’s Drama Dept. presents ‘Sound of Music’ on March 7-9 at the Spartan Center By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s (PACE) drama program will present their spring production of “The Sound of Music” under the guidance of Marianne Martinez, lead teacher for PACE’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Program. The beloved musical tells the story of Maria Rainer, a kind and free-spirited candidate at the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria. She leaves the monastery and is dispatched to serve as a governess for the Von Trapp family, caring for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. The inspirational Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece features some of the most captivating songs in musical history and the motion picture version starring Julie Andrews, remains the most popular movie musical of all time. The students have been dedicating long hours to rehearsing for what will certainly be one of PACE’s most memorable productions. The cast is looking forward to performing some well known crowd favorites, as well as an intricate five part acapella harmony in Latin. Joining the Spartan cast are several students from Immaculate Conception Catholic School and Hialeah Gardens Elementary, who will be playing the youngest of the Von

Trapp children. “The Sound of Music” will run March 7 to 9 at PACE’s Spartan Center located at 15600 N.W. 32 Avenue. Presale general admission tickets are on sale for $12 with VIP tickets for $20 (limited quantities available).

efforts to ensure 100 percent of funds belonging to the State and Local Housing Trust Fund are not swept. The sweeping of these funds is a violation of the public's trust and the funds collected through taxes on deed stamps must be used according to the terms of the Sedowski Act. For 11 years, the State Legislature has been sweeping these funds to the detriment of local communities. This year, the students implore local governments to take action to secure the millions of dollars available to their cities through this trust fund, ask voters to hold their public servants accountable and stand with Governor Ron DeSantis to fund the Trust 100 percent. #LeadingALegacyofService.

HML student featured on NBC 6 SWAG series THE MIAMI LAKER

Hialeah Miami Lakes High School (HML) senior Denisse Pino is certainly a Student Working At Greatness (SWAG). She was recently featured in the education series of that name by NBC 6. Reporter Ari Odzer interviewed Pino regarding her life experiences and her plans for the future. It has been a very successful four years for Pino at HML. During that time, she has never missed a day of school, she has achieved a 4.99 weighted GPA, she has been inducted in to the school’s National Honor Society and she has served as captain of HML’s JROTC. What makes these accom-

plishments so significant is the fact that throughout her life, Pino and her mother have experienced extreme economic hardship, often having to move from one apartment to another, staying in shelters or temporarily staying with friends, while also dealing with limited funds for food and basic necessities. It was not until her senior year that Pino reached out to HML’s trust counselor Odalys Acosta about her situation. Since that time, Pino has discovered that there are programs available to help homeless students achieve success. MDCPS project upstart has provided funds for her senior

activities as well as clothing and even toiletries. HML maintains a food bank for students who may need to take food for the weekend. When asked how she was able to maintain such a level of success while dealing with such hardships, Pino states that “it was sheer will power and a desire for a better future.” Pino has been accepted to the engineering program at University of Central Florida (UCF), where her tuition fees will be waived. She has also earned the Bright Futures scholarship, which will assist with living expenses while at school. Additionally, she will enter UCF in the fall with 17 college courses already under her belt through a combination of advanced placement and dual enrollment classes taken at HML. Pino feels certain that her NBC 6 cameraman and reporter Ari Odzer are pictured with leadership experiences with the Denisse Pino and HML’s JROTC during her NBC 6 SWAG HML JROTC will help her get a interview. part time job during her college years, as well as provide for a solid professional foundation once she graduates.
