Mater Lakes Thespians present High School Musical By Jaily Gomez Special to The Miami Laker The Mater Lakes Academy Thespians have begun working on their winter musical, Disney’s High School Musical. After a successful run of their last production, The Wizard of Oz, the Thespians are eager to return to the stage with a much more modern show. High School Musical is a show many of MLA’s students will be familiar with, having grown up with the film. This stage adaptation carries the same tone as the original, with a few new fun surprises to keep audiences on their toes. Long time fans will recognize their favorites scenes, while first time viewers will be delighted by the high energy songs and dances. High School Musical tells a story everyone can relate to – the tale of high school cliques, and what it means to fit

in and be yourself. The lead roles of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez will be played by sophomore Lucas Menvielle and freshman Kaitlyn Gonzalez. Menvielle played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, making this his second performance with the MLA Thespians. This is Gonzalez’s first major role in a Mater Lakes dramatic production. Ryan and Sharpay Evans, the brother-and-sister antagonists of the show, will be portrayed by seniors Jorge Lopez and Andrea Burns. This will be the first show with Mater Lakes for both performers. High School Musical runs for three days, December 20 to 22, in the Lehman Theater at Miami Dade College North campus. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org.

Final weekend for Iphigenia in Aulis at the Main Street Playhouse

This is the final weekend, December 15-17, to enjoy the Main Street Players production of Iphigenia in Aulis which has been well received by audiences and critics alike. At the end of each performance, the talented cast of actors have been greeted with standing ovations and words of praise by those in attendance. “In Miami, a city that grows quickly on an artistic and cultural level, and to those who still proclaim it a ‘cultural wasteland,” that gives us so many options, at the same time that is difficult deciding which one to attend, it is not very common to enjoy classical Greek theater of the highest professional quality with magnificent actors. It is a unique opportunity that lovers of good theater should not waste,” wrote José Abreu Felippe, el Nuevo Herald. The show is directed by Isaac MATER LAKES THESPIANʼS cast for the High School Polanco with Danny Nieves as Musical include (from left) Robert Merkel, Isabella Orsolini, the production manager. Council settles Dunn lawsuit over road projects PAGE 2

DECEMBER 15, 2017

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Developer Lowell S. Dunn II sued the town of Miami Lakes for a breach of contract over a development agreement following a comment which suggested the developer was still responsible for making roadway improvements after his family sold the property to the Lennar Corporation. For the first time since he filed the lawsuit last year, Dunn appeared before council members last week to set the record straight on why the agreement was subject to litigation. Lawmakers approved a resolution following a second and final public hearing on amending the N.W. 87th Avenue Development Agreement, and settling several lawsuits against the town brought by the original developer of the 2011 accord. The agreement, which opened up N.W. 87th Avenue between N,W. 154 and 162 streets, was part of the Lowell Dunn family’s site plans to build residential housing units and a shop-

ping center west of the roadway, and obligated to make road improvements to mitigate any traffic concerns. The Lowell Dunn family sold the land to Lennar, which agreed to the option of paying the town a mobility fee instead of making the roadway improvements when the Town Council approved its rezoning plans last year. Dunn said he filed the lawsuit after he learned Lennar’s attorney, Juan Mayol, told council members during a zoning hearing the original developer was still responsible for some of the street upgrades to accommodate the additional traffic from the residential development. “The intent was the first permit that was pulled, whoever pulled it would do all of the improvements,” Dunn said. “That was part of the deal. When I heard about the mobility fee, the council asked Juan Mayol who will make the other improvements and he said the Dunns.” According to Town Manager

Alex Rey, some of the proposed improvements in the original agreement were no longer necessary to the town. The town settled the Dunn’s $88,000 legal bill. Mayor Manny Cid said he would have rather settled the issue outside of court. “My only request is the next time just call us and not get the attorneys involved,” he said. Lennar’s building plans that council members approved last year remain the same under the amended development agreement. In other Council actions: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to establish a new salary for Mayor Manny Cid, which would grow annually commensurate with the Consumer Price Index for South Florida. The CPI is used to adjust lawmakers’ reimbursements on a yearly basis. The mayor currently earns $18,000 a year, which hasn’t changed since the town incorporated in 2000. According to the town, as of August 2017, the index of 2.3 percent is the closet to the town’s previous fiscal year, which ended on September 30. The salary increase for the current year will be $414.00, giving the mayor a $18,414 a year salary. The increase of $414 amounts to $1.13 per day. • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to change the qualifying period for a special election in August

of 2018 for Seat 3. Former vice mayor Tony Lama resigned with two years left on his term after he accepted a new job in Seattle, Washington. Cid appointed Marilyn Murano to the chair until the county’s next scheduled election with the winning candidate serving out the remainder of Lama’s term. • Council members approved a resolution to adopt the town’s Complete Streets Program, which is among the goals in the Strategic Plan. The program was designed to enhance mobility for easier vehicular and non-vehicular transportation by requiring streets to be planned, designed, operated and maintained to enable safe, convenient and comfortable travel and access for users of all people of ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation. In 2016, the town received grant funding in the amount of $40,000 from Miami-Dade County’s Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) for the creation of Complete Street Program with a Town match of $10,000. Kimley Horn and Associates was contracted to develop the Program. • Council members approved a resolution authorizing the town manager to enter into a local funding agreement with FDOT for the design of N.W. 146 Street and N.W. 159 Street

underpasses for an amount not to exceed $555,000. The project is funded with the town’s mobility fee and People’s Transportation funding. • Council members approved a resolution to authorize the town manager to execute a contract with Rodriguez Trueba and Company, CPA for independent auditing services in an amount not to exceed $250,000. • Council members approved a resolution authorizing the town manager to apply for an FDOT grant for the town’s Safe Routes to School program. The program offers to remove barriers that prevent children and parents from walking or biking to and from school safely, to assist in funding the Miami Lakeway North and South Project, constructing a shared use path, tree removal and installation and signal modification. The Bob Graham Education Center, located at 15901 N.W. 79 Avenue in Miami Lakes, serves Miami Lakes students in grades K through 8. Traffic congestion occurs during drop off and dismissal peak times on N.W. 79 Avenue, a two-lane access road located adjacent to the school and numerous residential homes. This roadway provides limited access for students, teachers, and parents. The grant will focus on improv(Please see Page 3)

Summary of actions during December 5 Council meeting (Continued from Page 2) ing and enhancing pedestrian infrastructure on N.W. 79 Avenue, including widening sidewalks, installing curb ramps, and updating crosswalks, inviting students and parents to walk and bicycle to and from this school safely. • Council members approved a resolution to adopt the proposed update to the Title VI Plan for Miami Lakes, which is required by federal law, to receive a grant for $864,000 to purchase two buses to expand the town’s transit system. • Council members approved a resolution authorizing the town manager to execute a contract with Metro Express for construction of the N.W. 82 Avenue and Oak Lane reconfiguration project which is estimated at $72,000. • Council members approved six joint resolutions to transfer the various special taxing districts from Miami-Dade to Miami Lakes. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal for his colleagues and town staff to look into the possibility of expanding westbound Miami Lakes Drive underneath the Palmetto Expressway to alleviate traffic congestion until the construction on the expressway expansion project is done. Rodriguez, who organized the

first traffic summit in the town with state and county officials and offered solutions to the traffic problems, said the plan would extend the left turn lane onto southbound traffic. Rodriguez wanted to isolate his idea from the town’s Strategic Plan for traffic solutions to expedite the project but his colleagues wanted to stick with the Strategic Plan, which was praised by FDOT officials for not aggressively pushing any traffic issues. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to direct town staff to work with the Neighborhood Improvement Committee to include the town’s bike sharing program, SPIN, in the town’s Neighborhood Matching Grant program. The matching grant program could be utilized to assist communities wanting to provide the SPIN program in additional points of distribution closer to neighborhoods. • Lawmakers approved Collazo’s proposal for town staff to look into the Older American Act Funding and Elderly Affairs Programming to help fund Miami Lakes’ Elderly Affairs Committee Lunch Bunch, which is an opportunity for senior citizens to meet and enjoy a meal and engage in activities together.

Chestnut was originally from Nassau, came to the United States as a teen, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. He spent his retirement years working in and enjoying the Bahamas. PAUL F. CHESTNUT SR. and husband Kenny, and Debbie Jadusingh. He is also survived by his stepchildren Jenise Fitzgereald and Brian Nelson, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life to share stories will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, at Nob Hill Hall, 10400 Sunset Strip in Sunrise, Florida.

In a recent Facebook posting and press release, Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid announced he has sold his ownership interest in Always At Your Side Adult Day Care and indicated he would be opening a new Cafe in the town. “The past three Christmas mornings, I would travel to Pembroke Pines to eat breakfast at Mayor’s Cafe, which is owned by Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis,” explained Cid. “I then ran into childhood friends, Luis Marquez and Jeffrey Rodriguez (both Miami

Lakes residents), at the Mayor’s Cafe. That chance meeting led to a discussion of how great it would be to have a Mayor’s Cafe in Miami Lakes.” Cid explained they approached Ortis about the possibility of franchising and Ortis agreed.

Marquez, Rodriguez and Cid have partnered to bring the second Mayor’s Cafe location to Miami Lakes at the old Brothers of Brooklyn site in the Royal Oaks Shopping Plaza. The restaurant is slated to open in the first quarter of 2018.

Two students at Hialeah Gardens Middle School, Kiara Llaugert and Gabriela Faedo, are making the Christmas brighter for those who are in need. Kiara Llaugert is an 8th-grade student and president of the DFYIT Club (Peer Counselors). For the past 2 years she has rallied the school to participate in Operation Christmas Child, a project she took on as her own. She registered, bought 100 boxes and most of the supplies herself, and packed all 100 boxes making sure every child will be happy. The outpouring of help from the school student body was over-

whelming. The 100 boxes were filled in no time. Kiara with the help of her Mother Nelva, then transported the 100 boxes to a local church where she negotiated a deal for the church to pay for the shipping cost. These boxes are shipped throughout the world to the most needed children out there. Gabriela Faedo is an 8thgrade student and is vice president of the DFYIT Club (Peer Counselors). For the past two years, she presented to DFYIT a project to help the children living in The Village South whose parents are currently in recovery. Gaby recruited 20 peer counselors to adopt a child.

Each member bought the child a toy, blanket and an outfit suited to their age. In December, the peer counselors went to the daycare center bearing Christmas gifts for all of the children currently living there and were able to spend the day playing with the children. This has been one of the most powerful hands-on community service event that the group has participated in. Gabie was named Do The Right Thing Top winner for the month of January 2017 and won a trip to Washington DC which she just went on last month.

Optimist Club’s 6U Chicago Cubs receive gifts marking perfect season

THE MIAMI LAKER

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker stuff The Miami Lakes Optimist Club’s 6-and-under baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, celebrated an undefeated season for 2017 and a surprise gift by the owner of the Chicago Cubs’ baseball team, Tom Ricketts. Team coach Abel Exclusa and his wife Zoila Simmons hail from Chicago and are fans of the Chicago Cubs. During her free time away from her work as a police officer, Simmons reached out to the Cubs and they responded with a handwritten letter noting that they are “so proud” to have the Miami Lakes kids as part of the Cubs family. “If you try your very best, play together as a team, and have fun, no matter the outcome

of the games, you all will be champions, too! We’ll be rooting for you from Chicago. Fly the W in Florida,” read the letter.” The team also sent the little players the W towels given away at the 2016 World Series game, along with stickers. Kids and parents alike were in awe for the investment and time the World Series champions spent on the gift. The stickers and towels must have energized the team for the remainder of the season as they went on to have an undefeated record. The penultimate game of the season against the Rays was a nail-biter to watch as the team narrowly earned a tie after having the lead for the first three innings before a miraculous comeback for the Rays that

Following the inning the Cubs scored 9 runs updating the score to 24 to 19 before the Rays came back one more time to settle with a tie at 24 to 24 with the last out and men still on base. The 6-and-under teammates on the Optimist Club’s Chicago Cubs were Exclusa’s son Alexander, along with Joaquin Falcon, Jacob Medina, Ryan Camacho, Riley Garcia, Dante McKay, Xavier Hernandez, Anthony Robles, Vince Guttierez, Daniel Quinn, Jeremy Marin, Jonathan Fuentes, and Terry Wallace. Exclusa, Simmons and assistant coach Joaquin Medina, all congratulated the team on their efforts and achievements. Exclusa has coached various sports in other counties but when his son showed interest in baseball, Exclusa jumped at the offer to help train him by becoming team coach. “The parents play a huge part, and that was a big reason for our success, parents that were there for practices and games, so we are grateful to have them and to our sponsor Kaufman Lynn Construction,” said Exclusa.

Council recognizes retiring MDFR Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez

At the December 5 Town Council meeting, Chief Abel Fernandez, Battalion Chief of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64 in Miami Lakes, was recognized due to his upcoming retirement. He was commended for his commitment to serve the community for the last three years. Twenty years ago, Fernandez began his career as a firefighter in Liberty City, where he gained invaluable experience as a fire paramedic. Later, he retained the title of Fire Lieutenant under the 11th Battalion which oversaw special operations. There he learned how to deal with haz-

ardous materials and how to be an excellent ASVAB technician. Fernandez then earned the rank of Captain where he dedicated his efforts in the coordination of a world-class fire marine operations group for MiamiDade County. For the past three years, Fernandez has not only been a dedicated Miami Lakes resident, but has been instrumental in ensuring the safety and preventive care of the community. Along with council members, he began a stroke prevention campaign called “Know Your Pulse” as well as the “R.A.M.P. It Up” campaign to encourage

residents to have vital medical information written down in anticipation of an emergency for First Responders. Also, Mayor Manny Cid and councilmembers proclaimed December 5 as “Zonta says ‘No” To Violence Against Women Day.” The Zonta Club of Miami Lakes is the local chapter of Zonta International and on November 25, the organization kicked off its “16 Days of Activism,” an international campaign to raise awareness and increase actions to end violence against women and girls locally and around the world.

MIAMI-DADE Battalion Fire Chief Abel Fernandez and his wife (center) are congratulated on his upcoming retirement by the Town Council (from left) Councilmembers Tim Daubert, Ceasar Mestre and Luis Collazo, Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, Councilmember Marilyn Ruano, Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez and Mayor Manny Cid.

Southeast Computer Solutions owner has decor skills THE MIAMI LAKER

Many years ago, Sonia Ferrera, the owner and founder of Southeast Computer Solutions, started decorating her office for Halloween since it coincided with her birthday. The occasion called for decorations, a ghoulish lunch and costume party with the office turned into a haunted house. Seeing the impact the decor had on her employees, Ferrera decided to decorate the offices for Thanksgiving with a pumpkin patch complete with crows, scarecrows and pilgrims.

Miami Dade College has state’s best newspaper

Naturally, Ferrera extended her decoration skills to Christmas and turned the offices into a winter wonderland with more and more decorations added from year to year. Today, at their Miami Lakes location, 15165 N.W. 77 Avenue, Suite 2009, the challenge now is “running out of room. “The office is truly spectacular, “ said Ferrera, one of the newest members of the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce. “Pictures do not do it justice as the panoramic view is key.

We have five Christmas trees, polar bears, penguins and much more. Every inch is filled with the Christmas spirit. We have our own version of the Rockefeller trees as it hits our ceiling. “The office is full of joy and the employees come in everyday and look for something new like a child on Christmas morning, she added. “We have presents for employees, gifts for their children, and even their pets. The joy and love that we feel is priceless.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Florida College System Publications Association (FSCPA) has named Miami Dade College’s student newspaper, The Reporter, the top college newspapers in the state. The publication was recognized for winning six first place awards and winning 12 among 18 individual categories during a recent FCSPA awards banquet in Orlando. The Reporter has amassed 100 awards from the FSCPA in the last seven years including 58 first-place honors. In addition to placing first in overall excellence, individuals won first place honors for InDepth Reporting by Maria Vizcanino and Riane Roldan; News Story by Diane Roldan; Humor Column by Katherine SOUTHEAST COMPUTER SOLUTIONS owner Sonia FerWallace-Fernandez; Picture rera transforms her Miami Lakes office into a Winter WonStory by Omar Negrin and Sebastian Ballestas; Editorial derland for employees to enjoy. Cartoon by Enio Acosta Jr., and Design by the Reporter’s staff. “I am so grateful for having such a supportive and hardworking staff, said Maria Vizcaino, The Reporter’s editor-in-chief. “We were blessed to have been part of the paper. The real accomplishments are the experiences we had and the friends we made. The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a biweekly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle and is supplemented by a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the Kendall, North and Wolfson campuses.

Shula’s Athletic Club hosted “Glo For The Cure” in October to raise funds for the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative through fitness classes held under black lights. Participants were encouraged to wear white or neon colors, victims and survivors of cancers, and to share in the hashtag #GLOForTheCure. After counting the funds the Athletic Club raised $3,000 for the local organization and did its part in the search for a cure. Shula’s Athletic Club staff presented a check to Andrea Ivory, founder of WBHI.

Two Pack 660 Cub Scouts do well in Pinewood Derby Every year the Cub Scouts of northwest Miami-Dade compete in a generations-old tradition, the Pinewood Derby. Each Cub Scout, grades 1 through 5, has the opportunity to turn blocks of wood and wheels into their own race car. The Derby was hosted this year at Hialeah High and over 100 cars were entered. Two Cub Scouts from Pack 660, chartered to Miami Lakes United Methodist Church and affiliated with Miami Lakes K-8 Center, achieved their goals. Aidan Schwinghammer’s “Cubstar,” designed to honor Scouting, won first place in the

largest racing division, the “Webelos Division” and earned him third place overall. Good friend, classmate and fellow Webelo Wilson Oliva’s car won third place in the “Best of Show” category for its unique Lego-inspired spaceship look. Pack 660 meets every Thursday at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church from 7 to 8 p.m. and all boys in grades 1 to 5 are invited to participate. For more information, contact Cub Master Sean Schwinghammer at 305-798-3724.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Mayor discusses town’s mobility To the Editor The Miami Laker The culture in our town is no longer built around focusing on the next week, or month, or election cycle. We’re focusing on future generations. It’s a bigpicture approach, and part of that change is adjusting the way we think about our town’s mobility. How do our residents go to work, drop off kids at school, pick up groceries, and do everyday activities without getting stuck in traffic? We cannot ignore these questions anymore, nor can the answers be the status quo. We need a simple and commonsense approach. What we’ve done for the past 30 years in Miami-Dade County doesn’t work. Stand at any intersection in Miami-Dade during rushhour traffic and you will be immediately convinced that we are failing. Miami Lakes is trying to find solutions. We’ve reformed the process by which new developments impacting traffic get put into effect. Previously, developers would submit traffic studies and negotiate development agreements that never mitigated the traffic impact – hence, why we have gridlock today.

Now, developers pay into a mobility fund that is exclusively utilized for transportation improvements throughout town. The list of mobility initiatives selected for funding were pinpointed via a transportation summit where all pertinent agencies, stakeholders, and the public attended. We’re not done. But we’re try-

ing. And we’re getting there – so you can get home faster. I applaud my colleagues for challenging the traffic congestion status quo of the past, and looking for innovative ways to combat traffic congestion in our community. Manny Cid Mayor Town of Miami Lakes

OLL’s boy’s volleyball team takes perfect season into semi-final loss

THE MIAMI LAKER

Mater Academy wins over HML in girl’s basketball

THE GIRLʼS basketball teams for Mater Academy and Pace High are off to a good start this season. Last week, Mater Academy crushed Hialeah Miami Lakes, 75-15, in a home district game against their cross-town rival (pictured above). Guards Ambar Ramirez and Annette Alicandu led the Lady Lions, who won two consecutive games. As of last week, Mater Academy is 3-2, 3-0 with games against Ft. Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (4-3, 1-0), Westland Hialeah (0-2) and Ronald Reagan (0-3, 0-1). Pace is 5-1, 2-0, and coming off a 29-28 lost to iMater Charter. Mater Academy and Pace clash on Monday, December 18, at Pace.

Last year, Our Lady of the Lakes varsity boys volleyball team finished the season with two losses, including a defeat in the All Catholic Conference semi-final game. In 2017, there was a new focus and a new mission for the Cheetahs, making school history by playing in the Championship game. The team determination proved to be too much for their opponents during the regular season going undefeated with a record of 9-0, and they never lost a set going 18-0.

They were crowned the North Division Champions and awarded the No. 1 seed in the 4th Annual All Catholic Conference boys playoffs. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Epiphany, and for the second year in a row, they reached the semi-final game versus St. Thomas Catholic School. The Cheetahs were all business and defeated the Tornados in two straight sets and celebrated their first ever trip to the Championship game. Unfortunately, in the Cham-

pionship game, the Cheetahs faced a hot streaking team in the Wolverines of Belen Jesuit, and the Cheetahs suffered their first loss of the season. The boys made history by becoming the first OLL boys team to ever play in the championship game, and the Cheetahs were named the 2017 All Catholic Conference boys volleyball runner-ups. “It was a great season and a great ride. This team will forever have a special place in my heart,” said Coach John Garcia.

I expect that same feeling with my current and new members. Not everyone can be selected into this organization, so it is definitely a great accomplishment to have.” The 48 new inductees were asked to stand during the ceremony and together, they recited the NHS induction pledge. Each student was then presented with their certificate and individual lighted candles, a traditional symbol of this distinguished honor. All the students ended the evening posing for photos with their new NHS peers.

In an initiative proposed by chairman Perla Tabares Hantman, the Miami-Dade School Board voted unanimously to promote and encourage participation in the 2018 Miami National College Fair, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on February 25, at the Doubletree Miami Mart Airport Hotel and Convention Center, 777 N.W. 72 Avenue. “The College Fair provides parents and students with excellent information about educational opportunities and choices,” said Hantman, who has cochaired the Fair’s local committee for 21 consecutive years. “It is a wonderful way for them to become informed and discover their options for post-secondary education.” Representatives from more than 200 colleges and universities will be at the Fair to provide information about admissions, financial aid, entrance exams and other related topics.

Spanish Lake Elementary’s Lesley Varas-Caraballo is Teacher of the Year

Lesley Varas-Caraballo has been honored as Spanish Lake Elementary’s Teacher of the Year and a selected District finalist. Teaching is embedded into her DNA, as her grandmother in Cuba, her mother, sister and brother are in education. Varas-Caraballo’s educational road began as a shy kindergarten student to immigrant parents. She was so introverted that the teacher didn’t think she understood English therefore was placed in an ESOL class. In grade two, she was placed in a Chapter 1 remedial class. She felt quite defeated until her teacher inspired her to believe in herself which led her to receive a district achievement award. From then on, she realized that one day, she could fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Varas-Caraballo continued her quest by graduating from the Miami-Dade Public School system completing an associates degree at Miami Dade College, and then graduating from FIU with honors on a full scholarship. Nothing would deter her from her goal. Despite working full time during college for a prominent ophthalmologist who did not agree with her field of study (elementary education), she knew she could make a difference in the lives of her students. Growing and learning for 17 years as an educator, she feels that we are not guaranteed tomorrow, and we must make the best of every situation. With great loss comes perseverance. Last year was the loss of her precious grandmother, her cherished friend who was also an educator, and a treasured student. Varas-Caraballo is a highly effective Nationally Board Certified educator. She is the recipient of numerous grants which have been instrumental in filling her classroom with items to enhance her student’s educational endeavors and her creative learning projects with them. She has earned numerous leadership positions at the school and within the community. Presently, she is dedicated to being the co-chairperson of Robotics and STEAM programs at Spanish Lake. A devoted wife, mother of three and a dedicated teacher, she has the privilege to help shape the minds of many children. She considers her students to be her own children for the little time the are in her class. Her goal is to inspire children to be kind-hearted and to think outside-of-the-box in order to change the world in a positive way.

The First Christmas

DECEMBER 15, 2017

By Rey Cruz, Campus Pastor New Testament Baptist Church Merry Christmas! These are words most people love to hear because it means that we are in the midst of a season full of hope and joy. From the wondrous expectations held by children, to the colorful lights that decorate our homes, and the delicious food that we share with friends and family; the Christmas season is certainly filled with joy and hope. Of course, all of it is made possible by the event by which the history of the world is measured…the birth of Jesus. I have often wondered if the original players of the Christmas story would recognize the modern North American Christmas season as somehow associated with the

THE MIAMI LAKER

event that they experienced that fist Christmas night. Would Joseph and Mary identify our celebration with REY CRUZ the birth of their firstborn baby boy? I am not too convinced they would. Christmas in our society has become so merchandized, stressful, and politically correct that there are only faint shadows of the manger in Bethlehem upon our minds during this time. So, let us remember that the first Christmas was as simple and as humble as it was glorious. The first Christmas was about a humble woman who, while yet a young virgin, bore the indignity of being pregnant out of wedlock.

The first Christmas was about a humble man who stayed by his fiancée’s side, even though he would probably be blamed by his contemporaries for not being able to wait until the marriage was official. The first Christmas was about this young couple who reached Bethlehem a little late for the census and found no room – or were given no room – at the local inn. The first Christmas was about this young couple having to seek out shelter for the night in what was tantamount to a barn. Most of all, the first Christmas was about Jesus, who Christians believe, and the Bible teaches, is God incarnate…the Savior of the world. He came to earth to bring peace between God and man. He came to offer forgiveness and eternal life as a free gift. Yet in spite of His divine credentials He was born in a manger in a tiny town on the outskirts of the vast Roman Empire. This “King of Glory” came not garbed in royal attire. There was no crown on His head that night. Instead He came in the form of a baby who was eventually swathed by old cloths in a simple manger. It was a scant beginning to the most fantastic life that has ever been lived. This Christmas as we busy ourselves with the hustle and bustle of putting everything together for the 24th and 25th of December, let us allow our minds to be taken back to the first Christmas and the real reason why we experience love, hope, and joy, during this season. It is because in a simple and humble manner, God offered mankind the greatest gift we could ever receive. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

‘Lamb for Chrismas’

By Rev. Pedro Rivera Sunrise Presbyterian Church Our cultural traditions dictate pretty much what we will eat for Christmas each year. For those of us growing up in a Puerto Rican family, it is Arroz con Gandules (rice with pigeon peas), Lechon “asao” (roast pork), and of course, the “Piece De Resistance” pasteles puertoriquenos (a kind of tamale made of green bananas stuffed with flavorful meat). Without these three staple dishes, there is no Christmas, at least, that is the sentiment for us Puerto Ricans. Now that we are older, wiser and people of faith, we realize that there would be no Christmas if God had not sent the “Lamb.” When Jesus is called the Lamb of God in John 1:29 and John 1:36, it is referring to Him as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. In order to understand who Christ was and what He did, we must begin with the Old Testament, which contains prophecies concerning the coming of Christ as a “guilt offering” (Isaiah 53:10). In fact, the whole sacrificial system established by God in the Old Testament set the stage for the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice God would provide as atonement for the sins of His people (Romans 8:3, Hebrews 10). It is not surprising to me now that I’ve been to the Holy Land, to understand who the Lamb is. I stood at the place called the “Shepherd’s Field.” At the birthplace of Jesus in nearby Bethlehem - the Shepherds would know Jesus because he would be the only newborn and as is well known from the often told Christmas story found in the Gospel of Luke 2, Mary wrapped her newborn son “in swaddling clothes” (Luke 2:7). What on earth were swaddling clothes, and why would Luke

REV. PEDRO RIVERA

have bothered to include this detail in his account of the birth of Jesus? Swaddling clothes are strips of cloth. This white linen was used to wrap the baby Jesus at the moment of His birth. The same swaddling clothes were used by the priests after they had bathed and cleaned the lambs that would be slaughtered at the temple in Jerusalem. The clothes were used to wipe dry and clean the lamb going to be sacrificed. The newborn Jesus is already clean and pure. Jesus would go to Jerusalem, 30 years later, to be slaughtered for all humankind that would accept Him as Lord and Savior. All Christendom believes that it is through His death on the cross as God’s perfect sacrifice for sin and His resurrection three days later that we can now have eternal life if we believe in Him. The fact that God himself has provided the offering that atones for our sin is part of the glorious good news of the gospel that is so clearly declared in Peter 1:18-21. “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.” I rejoice in saying Have a Very Merry Christmas and Praise God for the Lamb!

Time to celebrate the blessings!

By Father Jose Alvarez Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church Christmas is one of the most cherished times of the year! Throughout the world people anticipate its celebration with colorful festivities that take on varied expressions in different cultures.

It is a time in which the beautiful sounds of carols soothe our ears and hearts. It is a time in which our eyes are mesmerized by delightful decorations and the gleam of twinkling lights. It is a time in which all kinds of gifts are generously and joyfully exchanged. It is time of

By Rev. Keith R. Scott Miami Lakes Congregational Church As we approach Christmas of 2017, my heart is heavy around the recent massacre of 305 Sufi Muslims, worshipping in a mosque, and 26 members of 1st Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, worshipping in church. I can’t help but be concerned about the state of affairs in the world today. There’s slavery in Libya, terrorism all over the world, and intimidation and threats of nuclear proliferation from North Korea. But sometimes it’s hard for us to concern ourselves with issues in nations far away, as we are overwhelmed with our own issues. Homelessness, hunger, unemployment, health care, taxes, sexual harassment, and violence, are just some of the issues we currently struggle with as a nation today. Where’s the “Good News?” The “Good News” came with the birth of a baby boy, more than 2000 years ago in a city called Bethlehem. A baby boy born in a stable, lying in a manger, born to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a man named Joseph. And the Holy Scriptures tell us… And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the

city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a KEITH manger. And sudSCOTT denly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:10-14 And as we celebrate Christmas this year, let us be reminded that Jesus is the “Good News.” Jesus is Immanuel “God with us.” In spite of all the darkness in the world today, Jesus is the light that gives us hope, peace, joy, and love. So, as we find ourselves in a world gone wrong, Christmas is a time of hope for the world. Christmas is a time of peace in the world. Christmas is a time of joy to the world. And during this season of gift giving, there’s no greater gift to us, than the birth of Jesus. Share the gift of Christmas this year by sharing the gift of love. There’s no greater gift that we can give than love. May you and your families have a joyous, peaceful, hopeful, and wonderful Christmas. May you and your families be filled with the gift of love.

beauty, unity and hope. For Christmas, the spirit of this time is particularly understandable since Christmas is a celebration of FATHER the birth of ALVAREZ Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus, the Word through whom all good things were made, took on flesh and came into the world to reveal the fullness of beauty, unity and hope which is always in our midst, but which our eyes are often clouded from seeing. Jesus came to shed light on the goodness of our existence. Consequently, Jesus is regarded as the light of the world! May the reality of Christmas therefore serve us well! As the light in the afternoon sky grows day by day beyond Christmas, may the lights of our vision also grow so we may all the more cherish the beauty, unity and hope we already know and allow the spirit of this time to enhance it. To people of all creeds, countries and cultures here in our local community, may this Christmas be for you, your loved ones and us all at a time of great light – a time to celebrate the blessings which are uniquely ours!

What the Angels have to say

By Al Pino, Pastor Palm Vista Community Church Angels. Some people love them; some could care less about them, yet the Bible is filled with references to them. We find in the Bible that angels, as God’s mighty messengers, play an important role in the Christmas story. They were sent by God to announce Christ’s birth. Imagine with me for a moment what the angels must have been thinking on that Christmas day… for, from the beginning of time, they watched in wonder at God's redemptive activity. They watched God create man in His image…They watched man rebel against his Creator...They watched God promise to send a Savior to redeem mankind. They watched God graciously keep His people throughout the Old Testament as a testimony to His promise to bring forth a Savior from those people, Israel. They then watched as the Father sent His Son, Jesus, born of a virgin. A multitude of them announced Christ’s birth and declared God’s glory …They watched Christ live the perfect life that man was supposed to live in obedience to God’s moral law…They watched in horror as Christ was beaten and

PASTOR AL PINO hung on a cross to die for the sins of God’s people who failed to obey that moral law…They watched God raise Christ from the dead for the forgiveness of our sins. So, here is what the angels have to say to us this Christmas: “Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior!” May you bow your knee and life to Christ as Your Lord and Savior this Christmas! May you know the peace that He brings as the Prince of Peace. This peace is defined as peace between you and God. This peace is firm and eternal assured for you by Christ’s death and resurrection. Please join us at Palm Vista Community Church’s Christmas Eve day service at 10:30 a.m. We meet in the Miami Lakes Middle School auditorium.

The Person of Christmas

By Pastor Matt Sanders North Palm Baptist Church The Person of Christmas, Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 2:1-20: But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken to the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and they shall call His name

PASTOR MATT SANDERS Immanuel (which means, God with us)” Matthew 1:20-23. 1) Jesus (God who saves”) She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21). Yeshua/Joshua: “God is Salvation.”

Miami Lakes Congregational Church has scheduled a concert and a special remembrance service to honor the holidays this month. “Angels we have heard on Christmas” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 17. The concert is free and everyone is welcome to support the community’s young generations of artists as they celebrate Christmas. A “Blue Christmas”, a service

of remembrance, comfort and hope, has been scheduled at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 18. Miami Lakes Congregational Church is located at 6701 Miami Lakeway South across from Miami Lakes K-8 Center. Many well-meaning people love the Idea of Christmas because they can keep Christ in the cradle – but he claims to be, King of Kings and Lord of Lords! The question is…Is Jesus your Savior! Is Jesus your Christ? Is Jesus your Lord?
