MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

NOVEMBER 16, 2018

The Main Street Merchants and The Graham Companies are inviting the South Florida community to join them for the 34th Annual Main Street Festival of Lights from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 24. The holiday festivity will take place along two blocks in Miami Lakes Town Center and will celebrate the beginning of the 2018 holiday season by creating memories for families, friends and loved ones as Main Street lights up with a series of holiday-themed performances. Residents and guests can experience the Lighting of Main Street, a live DJ, photo stations, performances by students from local schools, characters, and lots of complimentary surprises for children, courtesy of presenting sponsors The Graham

Companies and Main Street Merchants, along with supporting sponsor Publix Super Markets. Renown journalist and radio personality GiGi Diaz will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. Media partners include The Miami Herald, Y100 Miami’s #1 Hit Music Station, and 93.9 MIA, Variety of the 80s, 90s, and Today. Shoppers who arrive early before the Festival of Lights begins will have an opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping as the Main Street Merchants will offer amazing sales in honor of Small Business Saturday, a day to celebrate and support small businesses in the community. Santa will be stopping by to help light up Main Street at 6:30

p.m. on the Main Stage, and will then welcome young visitors to the Santa House where photos will be available and proceeds from photo sales will help fund Miami Lakes Boy Scout Troop 247. Miami-Dade County Animal Services will be on hand to host pet adoptions. “We are thrilled to be able to carry on this fun-filled, family tradition on Main Street,” said Andrea Graham Rechichi, vice president of Corporate and Customer Relations at The Graham Companies. “Along with the Main Street Merchants, we love that the Festival of Lights brings together so many generations to enjoy such a heartwarming celebration,” she added. SANTA CLAUS will arrive on Main Street during the Festival of Lights to throw the giant light switch which will illuminate Miami Lakes Town Center. Children are invited to visit Santa with their wish lists in the Santa House.

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff With two open seats to be filled on the Miami Lakes Town Council, area voters elected a pair of political neophytes over two hopefuls who previously ran for political office. Attorney Jeffrey Rodriguez and charter school principal Carlos O. Alvarez won Seat 2 and Seat 6, respectively, during last week’s November 6 midterm elections, which saw the closet races in history for the U.S. Senate and Florida governor that appeared to be heading to a mandatory recount. With 55 percent (6,105) of the votes, Rodriguez defeated Xiomara Pazos, who gained 45 percent (4,979). Pazos, owner of a non-emergency transportation company, unsuccessfully ran in 2014 and 2016 against Councilmember Ceasar Mestre and Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, respectively. Alvarez defeated retired government administrator Esther

CARLOS O. ALVAREZ Colon, as he mustered 63 percent (7,188) of the votes, while his opponent collected 36 percent (4,085). Colon unsuccessfully ran two years ago against Councilmember Luis Collazo. Rodriguez, 35, replaces Tim Daubert who was term-limited, and Alvarez, 41, takes over for Mestre, who’s eight-year term also came to an end. Councilmmember-elect Joshua

JEFFREY RODRIGUEZ Dieguez automatically won Seat 4 on the Town Council in August when he ran unopposed, as the attorney is replacing Vice Mayor Frank Mingo, who vacated his seat to run for State Representative. Rodriguez and Alvarez reportedly were Mayor Manny Cid’s slate of candidates, as he campaigned for them, as well as Our Lady of the Lakes Fashion Show student models includCollazo, Mestre, Daubert, and ed (front to back) Maya Welch, Elise Cueli, Andrea Luna and (See story, more photos on Page 5.) The new council members will be sworn into office at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 27 at Miami Lakes Town Hall. “I’m happy with the hard work we put in and I’m proud of my family and friends who volunteered to get us where we are, said Rodriguez. “It was great for everybody, the volunteers and supporters, and a lot of fun and an emotional night. Rodriguez said he’s focused on the issues that got him elected including a better response time for fire rescue, placing speed bumps in residential areas to reduce speeding, blasting, traffic congestion and maintaining the town’s parks. “Those are the issues we need to focus on, he said. Alvarez said the encouragement from his wife, Hazel Alvarez, family and friends

helped him prevail to victory. “I just continued to believe in myself and showing my work ethics by connecting with residents, knocking door-to-door, attending council meetings and having the drive and dedication, he said. “The margin of victory was a testament of all the hard work they put in that helped motivate me, he said. Alvarez said his wife was the backbone for his campaign, as she sacrificed herself to help her husband get elected. “She embraced it and was able to balance her career as a manager, wife and mother to our kids while getting involved in my campaign, especially during early voting, he said. Alvarez said he’s ready to be a passionate leader and tackling the major issues such as traffic, blasting and school safety. Pazos, 61, and Colon, 65, could not be reached for comments by press time.

Fundraising could have played a role in the town’s election results. Alvarez raised $30,475 for his campaign, Rodriguez with $29,625, Colon drew $10,802, and Pazos had $1,180 in the bank. In a prepared statement, Cid congratulated all the candidates for running clean campaigns, and the town is ready to move forward with the new council members. “The election results solidify that our town is heading in the right direction," stated Cid. “With several departing council members, newly elected Councilmember Alvarez brings much needed leadership to the Town Council as he's a proven leader being a nationally recognized high school principal. As a town that outsources many of our services via contracts, Councilmember-elect Jeffrey Rodriguez is considered a top contract law attorney who will bring a wealth of contractural experience and negotiating skills that's needed at Town Hall. Cid said Dieguez brings proven leadership to the dais. “Councilmember-elect Dieguez, who was born and raised in Miami Lakes, brings a wealth of experience from managing several council campaigns to serving as chair of the Miami Lakes Neighborhood Improvement Committee and the town’s Charter Review Commission, Cid said.

Martinez family creates ‘running shoe’ charity drive PAGE 4

NOVEMBER 16, 2018

THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Orestes Martinez is an avid runner who has participated in many races both in South Florida and internationally. However, while running the Marabana race in Cuba last year with his mother Georgina Martinez, they both noticed there seemed to be something missing for Cuban citizens. “They run right next to you and say ‘how are you doing?’ In this broken English, and then eventually the conversation always lead back to ‘can I have your shoes today or after the race?’ And I would tell them the same thing my mom told them, which is I don’t have shoes with me,” explained Martinez. “It PICTURED (from left) Georgina Martinez, Patricia “Speedy” inspired me because I realized Barry and Orestes Martinez Jr. sporting their PSN there was a need here. It hit us Roadrunners T-shirts at the Marabana race in Cuba. both at the same time, like let’s do this.” Let Us Help You Lower Martinez’s father passed away on Valentine’s Day in Your Insurance 2010 due to complications from Premiums Peripheral Artery Disease. Before his passing, Orestes Auto • Home • Flood Martinez Sr. needed to amputate Commercial • Water Craft everything below his left knee. Orestes was influenced by his 6175 NW 153rd Street • Suite 100 Miami Lakes, FL 33014 father when naming his charity, El Pie de Papá (Papa’s foot, in Spanish.) The idea for the nonprofit www.globalinsurancefla.com came to Martinez during the Emmaus retreat in April. There,

he realized how he can help both the people of Cuba and honor his father’s memory. By July, Martinez was in the beginning stages of starting his charity. However, it wasn’t until his father’s birthday on September third that he, his mother and Patricia “Speedy” Barry founded El Pie de Papá Running Ministries. Martinez used to coach the Runners Club at Palm Springs North Elementary School alongside Barry. When Martinez left to teach at West Hialeah Gardens Elementary School, Barry took over as head coach and renamed the team the PSN Roadrunners. The team was very successful until this past year when she retired. In addition to being second vice president to El Pie de Papá Running Ministries, she is also a world traveler. Which in turn, lead her to run with the Martinezes at the Marabana race that started it all. Martinez was also inspired by Miami Lakes K-8 teacher, Alexis Garcia. The educator ran across Cuba in 2015, documenting his adventures and donating hundreds of shoes to needy Cuban children. “I had no idea about the need there is in Cuba for shoes or running shoes. He’d (Garcia) tell me, and say ‘I’m going to take some shoes’ and I was like

‘okay, cool’ but I didn’t realize what was going on until I went there,” explained Martinez. Although Martinez and his family currently live in Sunrise, his mother is a Miami Lakes resident of 17 years. Additionally, Martinez keeps tabs on the town while participating in the local running group, Miami Fit. “I talked to Katrina and Eddie Vera, and they allowed me to tell the entire group,” he recalled. “The next time I went running I came back with like 10 pairs of shoes. That was amazing.” Along with shoes donated by teachers at his current school, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and donations from Runners Depot and Foot Works, El Pie de Papá Running Ministries now holds 50 donated shoes in their inventory, and hopes to grow that number once their website goes live. Martinez plans on distributing the shoes personally to runners in this year’s Marabana race in November. He also hopes to establish a connection with La Inmaculada Catholic Church in Cuba to house and distribute the shoes as well. In the meantime, anyone interested in donating are asked to contact Martinez at (305)5055637 or email KTPO70@ aol.com.

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School’s 22nd annual Children’s Fashion Show and luncheon, “An Evening in Morocco,” was a stylish fundraising success. The show was held October 20 at the Doubletree Miami Airport Convention Center. It featured 130 student models, from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and drew more than 600 guests. The event is the largest fundraiser for the first half of the school year. Money raised goes towards the “Lend-a-Hand Scholarship Program” that provides tuition assistance to families in need and the educational needs of the school. Students performed to a variety of music and dance choreographed by Teresita Miranda of Miranda Productions which showcased the students’ special talents. The MC for the evening was Roxanne Vargas, Entertainment host and reporter for NBC 6 South Florida. School administrators expressed their appreciation to school staff and teachers, the ladies of the Fashion Show committee, and the backstage helpers. The success of the fundraiser was due to commitments by sponsors lead by Grand Sponsor BLACC Boutique, Main Street and the Farah family. Diamond sponsors included the Kunkel family, Simply Healthcare Plans, Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, Tasco Plumbing Mechanical Services, and Urvan X Architects. Clothes modeled by the students were provided by Macy’s Dadeland, Zayas Men’s Shop and Tuxedos, Zayas Quinceañeras, Step by Step, Ranee’s and Warm Hearts. Many businesses and individuals donated items for the event’s Chinese raffle and door prizes.

Public Safety Committee’s Lock It or Lose It campaign

Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee is encouraging the community to be sure to lock vehicles and remove any valuables during the holiday season. Removing gifts and shopping bags from cars, and locking doors, may seem simple enough, but many residents simply forget or get sidetracked due to the stress of the holidays. The theft of a purse, wallet,

or documents with sensitive information can also result in identity theft. These crimes can be prevented by simply locking homes, garage doors, windows and vehicles. If anyone sees something or someone suspicious, report incidents at any time to the Town of Miami Lakes Police non-emergency line at 305-476-5423.

Miami Lakes Toy Drive will aid U.S. Marines Toys for Tots

The Town of Miami Lakes is hosting a Toy Drive to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign. Residents are encouraged to brighten a child’s spirits during the holiday season by dropping off toy donations at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street, through Friday, December 14. The mission of Toys for Tots is to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas, and to play an active role in the development of the nation’s most valuable resources – its children.

Councilmember-Elect Josh Dieguez outlines his plans PAGE 8

NOVEMBER 16, 2018

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes resident Josh Dieguez was elected to the Miami Lakes Town Council in August when he ran unopposed for Seat 4 for the November 6 election, replacing Frank Mingo, who resigned to run for State Representative. At 29 years-old, the Councilmember-elect is the second youngest person in town history who will serve on the Miami Lakes Town Council for the next two years, and is projected to be a rising star in local government. Dieguez, who joins Councilmembers-elect Jeffrey Rodriguez and Carlos Alvarez as the town’s new elected voices, took time out of his busy schedule to do a Question and Answer interview with The Miami Laker, which focuses on his campaign, vision for Miami Lakes, the top issues residents want him to address, the search for a new town manager and his relationship with Mingo. Q. How long have you lived in Miami Lakes? A. I have lived in Miami Lakes since 1989 – 29 years. Q. What is your occupation? A. I am an attorney at my

THE MIAMI LAKER

family’s law firm, Dieguez & Associates, PLLC, which has been located in Miami Lakes since 2002. Q. Please list any civic and communities duties? A. I have been a member of the following boards: 2018- present, Florida Bar Association, Business Law Section; 2016-present, Miami Lakes Bar Association (Board Member, 2018-present); 2016, Charter Revision Commission; 2014-2018, Elderly Affairs Committee; 2013-2018, Neighborhood Improvement Committee (Chair, 2013-2016). Q. During your campaign, what were some of the top issues residents want you to address? A. The most common issues I would hear about as I went door to door can be grouped into two categories: traffic mitigation and beautification. Residents want us to focus on speeding up long promised traffic improvements and to ensure any new development occurs on our terms. They also variously spoke of the need for more frequent tree trimming, better code compliance efforts, and preserving our tree canopy. The third most common issue,

JOSH DIEGUEZ which primarily was found on the West side of town, is the need to address rock mining blasting, which is causing considerable property damage. Although I did not hear as much about it during my campaign, public safety has emerged as an increasingly important issue on websites and social media pages due to a consistent string of car break ins. I have also been approached to work on providing a new fire rescue truck dedicated to Miami Lakes to more appropriately handle local emergencies, par-

ticularly once the Senior Village is completed. Q. What is your vision for the Town of Miami Lakes? A. As someone who grew up in Miami Lakes from infancy to adulthood, I fully understand and appreciate its founding vision and the inevitable pressure on that vision because of changes not just here but also in the surrounding area. My vision of Miami Lakes, therefore, can best be described as one that adheres to the original plan but adapts it for the future based on the needs and desires of our residents. For me, the core of Miami Lakes is its relative quietness, its long-standing families, and great community events and programs for our kids and seniors. These characteristics can be protected by, among other things, remaining relentlessly focused on traffic mitigation efforts, keeping property taxes low, preserving existing events and programs as best as possible, and stepping up our efforts in the area of public safety. Q. You will be part of the council that picks the next town manager. In your opinion, what should the town manager's duties reflect?

A. There are a variety of town initiatives which are at a critical point, especially our transportation master plan. Therefore, I am looking for a candidate who is ready to go on day one and can leverage existing relationships at the county and state level to fast track our plans and who are aware of available funding sources to help us finance these initiatives independent of our own taxes and fees. I am also looking for someone who understands the unique nature of our town government and shares my desire to protect the original vision of the Town while updating it to meet today’s resident expectations. Finally, our next Town Manager is someone who must serve the Council and residents with competence, integrity, and fairness. Q. Any thoughts on replacing Vice Mayor Frank Mingo? A. Frank is a friend who I have known since I was in junior high where his son was my classmate. He has been an effective and fiscally conservative council member and I am proud to have played a part in helping him get elected to the Council in 2013.

Eagle Scout project freshens Optimist Park courts PAGE 10

NOVEMBER 16, 2018

By Daniel Gonzalez III Special to The Miami Laker The basketball courts at Optimist Park were not at all an optimistic sight. All the usage throughout the years changed the paint from a bright forest green to a dingy swampy gray

with patches of white cement peeking out from underneath. That is why Ricardo Santana, a 17-year-old Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) student, decided that painting the courts would be the last mission on his path to becoming an

Eagle Scout, a national honor achieved by only four percent of Boy Scouts. “I know a lot of people use the courts, and painting them would bring new life to the park,” said Santana. “Plus, I was a student at Miami Lakes Middle School and I wanted to give back not just to the community, but to the school as well.” Throughout Miami, only about five percent of all scouts actually achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, but Santana’s troop (529) has managed to reach a 90 percent average of scouts reaching their final rank. Santana has been a Boy Scout ever since the first grade, and he’s always aspired to become an Eagle Scout. He had gotten the project approved and had people to help him, but he lacked the funds to actually pay for materials such as paint and rollers. “This was the hardest part of the project,” Santana said. “A lot of people loved the idea and would support you, but wouldn't donate to the project.” Santana had to put in countless hours of work doing car washes, sending letters, emails, calls and texts to all kinds of

companies and organizations. Even going so far as to go out to stores in full uniform to promote the project hoping someone would contribute. In the end, he was able to gather enough funds to paint two basketball courts, and the response from the community was all positive. “It’s really nice,” said Vermont Manning, a basketball enthusiast who frequents the courts. “I like the bright colors. It’s really helpful since now it’s going to be easier to see the court when playing at dark hours.”

Hilarious comedian and Miami Lakes resident Rich Purpura will bring magic and non-stop laughs back to the Main Street Playhouse on November 17, following his successful shows from September 27. Purpura has been leaving crowds howling with laughter for years, as evidenced by his many friends who were in the audience to lend their support, some of which came from out of town. Quite a few audience members had never seen him before, and good times were had by all. There will be a separate family magic and comedy show at 2 p.m. for kids from 5-12 years old. Rich performed this show

on the Disney Cruise Lines, and was voted Favorite Comedian for seven years in a row. Purpura is ready to expand his one-man show “The Joke Jukebox.” Audience members provide topics for Purpura to instantaneously come up with a joke. Audience members who stump “The Joke Jukebox” win a prize. The comedy show will be held at Main Street Playhouse on 6766 Main Street on Saturday, November 17. The kids magic show will be at 2 p.m., and tickets will be $10. The adult comedy show (18 years or older) will be at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and tickets will be $25, but includes $5 towards concessions.

Two Hialeah Miami Lakes swimmers MDC’s volleyball team seeks win championships in state contests third straight national title PAGE 14

NOVEMBER 16, 2018

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Two of Hialeah Miami Lakes High’s top swimmers won the state championships over the weekend. Junior Jocelyn Ruiz and senior Luis Salazar competed in the Class 3A swimming and diving state championships at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart, Florida. Ruiz won the Class 3A state championship in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Salazar won the Class 3A state title in the 100-yard butterfly. It was Ruiz’s third trip to the state tournament, while Salazar got his taste at state action. The victories come on the heels of Ruiz capturing regional championship in the 100-yard butterfly (59.58) and 100-yard backstroke (101.33). Salazar finished in third place at the regionals with a time of 54.63 which qualified him for the state meet. Their coach, Frank Rocha, said the two student-athletes are “great” swimmers and reaching the state tournament solidifies their place as among the top high-school swimmers in Florida. Salazar and Ruiz were among the 1,544 who qualified to compete in the districts, regionals and state championships.

For the second consecutive season, Miami Dade College’s women’s volleyball team captured the FCSAA State Volleyball Championship, and the Lady Sharks are on their way to defending their national championship this week in Hutchinson, Kansas. The team is seeking its third straight national title. The Lady Sharks (25-0) defeated Polk State College in the final match to win the state title, 23-25-25-20, 25-12, 25-21. Tiziano Baumrukova led the Miami Dade team with 50 assists, one ace and eight digs, while her teammate, Scherine Dauhoue recorded 12 digs, 16 kills and two blocks. Samaret Caraballo added 21 digs in the victory over Polk State.

According to head coach Kiko Benoit, the season mirrors the team’s outstanding performance in previous years, when the Lady Sharks wrapped up a stellar undefeated post season by winning their ninth NJCAA Volleyball National Championship. Miami Dade College will have the opportunity to set a school record by bringing home three consecutive national titles. “I am very proud of our stellar student athletes,” said MDC president Dr. Eduardo J. Padron. “Thank you, Lady Sharks, for giving your all to your team and your college, and for your outstanding contribution to MDC’s long and successful history in collegiate sports.”

Bob Graham Edu. Center fields first two soccer teams

This was the first year that Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) has offered both girls and boys soccer. The season was a memorable one, with the middle school girls soccer team completing an undefeated season and making the playoffs.

The middle school boys soccer team also had a great season as well. Regardless of the scores or records, the overall goal of the program was to ensure that students taking part had fun while also learning the importance of sportsmanship.

Goleman quarterback Manny Reyes III has sterling season

DESPITE FINISHING THE SEASON 4-6, sophomore quarterback Manny Reyes III has orchestrated some bright moments for the Barbara Goleman High Gators. Inserted as the starter against district winner Doral Prep, Reyes threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns and was named Player of the Game. Reyes broke a school record throwing an 84 yard touchdown pass in the Gatorsʼ 41-30 loss to the Firebirds. He completed eight passes out of 14 attempts with a 46.8 passing yard average with no interceptions. Reyes, 5-11 and 135 pounds, finished the season with 13-38 for 243 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. According to his father, Manny Reyes II (pictured with him above), the younger Reyesʼ record breaking season has caught the attention of colleges, and he was asked to appear on the local TV show, Sports Stars of Tomorrow after the end of football season.

Castroman siblings oppose each other in softball match For the first time in their young athletic careers, Alexis and Erika Castroman found themselves on opposing teams as St. Thomas University and A.S.A. College clashed in a memorable softball match-up featuring the now sibling rivalry. Last month, Alexis Castroman, a senior at St. Thomas University, who has played her whole collegiate career there, faced off against her sister Erika Castroman, a freshmen at A.S.A. College. The Bobcats prevailed to victory. The sisters grew up playing playing softball for the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes. “This a dream come true for all of us,” said Alex Castroman, who coached both of his daughters who played on recreation travel teams for the Optimist Club. “It was an awesome sight to see both of your daughters playing college ball on the same diamond. It was an once in a lifetime experience needless to say.” Castroman said family and

friends attended the game, which was held at Bobcats Field, to support both sisters. “Although the Bobcats won the game, for us there were no losers,” said their mother Ivette Castroman. “They were both winners in our hearts. We have truly been blessed.”

Goleman AP honor students

FOUR Barbara Goleman Senior High School (Goleman) students earned a distinction as a National AP (Advanced Placement) Scholar. The distinction is given to these hardworking students by College Board, a nonprofit organization that helps connect students to opportunities and success on their road to a college education. In order to obtain a rank as a National AP Scholar, students must receive an average score of at least a four (five being the highest) on all AP exams taken. Additionally, students must earn scores of four or higher on eight or more of the exams. (Pictured from left to right: Melina Redondo, Emely Loscalzo, Justin Landrove and Gabriella Mestre.)

Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) announced that the school participated in the 2018 Jumpstart Read for the Record campaign on Thursday, October 25. This global campaign supports high-quality early learning, and highlights the importance of building children's vocabulary and promoting a love for reading. Children and adults worldwide were scheduled to take action by participating in the world's largest shared reading

experience by reading the same book on the same day. The 2018 campaign book, “Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell celebrates the magic that can happen when a community comes together to create something beautiful to bring about change. Principal Yecenia Martinez set aside time on that day to read this special book to the prekindergarten classes.

Students enrolled in his class can earn their learners permit and Drivers License after completing the graduating license procedure on campus. HML is one of the few schools that continue to offer a hands-on dri-

Success In Math Is Just The Beginning

SPANISH LAKE ELEMENTARY has opened a MakerSpace for students in the fifth grade level. A MakerSpace is an area that starts with inquiry. Students come for hands-on, creative ways to encourage them to design, experiment, build and invent. They are deeply engaged in science, engineering and tinkering. This area is filled with objects to enhance problem solving, critical thinking, and most importantly, cooperation. Thanks to Publix Charities, this area became a reality at SLE.

MLEC students debate over Mater Academy High’s marching band midterm election candidates earned Superior rating at District contest THE MIAMI LAKER

By Samantha Jimenez Special to The Miami Laker Students at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) proved, once again, that young people are not the uninformed, apathetic generation people make them out to be. The student-run newspaper, The Harbinger and Junior State of America (JSA) hosted a mock gubernatorial debate and a mock senatorial debate four days before election day. The audience, composed of English and social studies classes, was more than intereste – they were involved. MLEC’s JSA and the journalism students teamed up to create this interactive event. Editor-inchief of The Harbinger and JSA president, Valeria Bula, moderated the event. Members of JSA represented the major candidates’ platforms in both the senatorial and gubernatorial race. It was an interactive debate. The candidates gave their opening remarks before answering the moderator’s questions, which ranged from the economy

and education to gun rights and the environment. Throughout the debate, students were encouraged to take to Twitter and post their questions using the hashtag #MLECdebates. Some of those questions were asked from the live Twitter desk. “The governor’s debate was very enthusiastic, relevant and interactive,” said JSA member Esther Alexandre, a senior in the Information Technology academy. “Matthew really brought out his A game as DeSantis. He was hitting all of the facts.” During lunch, students were encouraged to vote. Student government officers and journalism students were on hand to provide students with a ballot. In the end, voter turnout was 52 percent with 615 votes cast. MLEC students would have elected Andrew Gillum to be Florida’s next governor; he won 67 percent of the votes. Senator Bill Nelson won re-election with 63 percent of MLEC’s votes.

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Nearly 400 students from 11 middle schools across South Florida competed in Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s (Pace) 2018 Spartan Academic Olympics on November 2. The annual event celebrates the academic achievements of middle school students in multiple subject areas, such as English, math, foreign languages, art and science. Academic olympians arrived at the Pace campus early to register and take their exams in Pace classrooms. Olympians were divided into sixth, seventh and eighth grade groups for each subject and assessed by Pace teachers. While students took their exams, their parents were invited to stay for a Pace campus tour given by students and staff. After the tests were completed, results were tallied and students returned to the Spartan Center for an exciting presentation of the individual and overall

MIDDLE SCHOOL winners and participants of Paceʼs Academic Olympics. awards. The first, second and third place individual winners for each subject across the three grade levels were honored onstage with certificates and medals presented to each of them by principal Ana Garcia. For overall awards, the schools were awarded trophies in each of the small or large school categories. Annunciation Catholic School won first place among the small schools, followed by Saint John the Apostle Catholic School and Holy Cross Lutheran School. In the large school category,

Immaculate Conception Catholic School erupted into cheers as they took home the first place trophy, while St. Rose of Lima School and Saint James Catholic School were awarded second and third place respectively. Pace High School will be holding its high school entrance exam on December 1 at 8 a.m. For more information on enrollment, visit www.pacehs.com, email admissions@pacehs.com or call (305)923-7223, extention 203.

MDC receives $10 million grant for scholarships

Thanks to an anonymous $10 million donation, Miami Dade College is planning to expand its groundbreaking American Dream Scholarship program, which supports the college in its role as a pioneer in the national effort to provide access and affordability. The American Dream Scholarship, which was created in 2011, provides high-school graduates from Miami Dade County, the opportunity to get a college education without having to incur debt from student loans. The scholarship covers fees not already covered by financial aid, grants, the Florida Prepaid College Plan or other scholarships. The scholarship program covers up to 60 credits toward the completion of an associate in arts degree or an associate in science degree. Since its inception, more than 17,000 students have qualified for the American Dream Scholarship. About 55 percent of American Dream Scholars graduate within three years compared to the 25 percent national average for all community college students. In addition, 88 percent of American Dream Scholars re-enroll in the subsequent fall term.
