Mayor Cid stresses need for committed candidates while speaking at Chamber lunch

Popular Jazz Concert in the Park scheduled for Saturday, January 27

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff This year, the Miami Lakes Town Council and residents will make perhaps the biggest decisions for the town’s future, choosing a new town manager and a field of candidates to fill four council seats. But Mayor Manny Cid is hoping they share the same vision as most constituents in an effort to enhance their quality of living. Cid said a unified council and Town Manager Alex Rey’s legislative abilities to accomplish the goals and objectives for Miami Lakes’ Strategic and Master plans in 2017 should serve as a model for the future. Rey is retiring in 2019 following a 30-plus-year government MAYOR MANNY CID spoke career to take advantage of the at Miami Lakes Chamber of DROP program, and the town Commerce January meeting. has begun the search for his should live in Miami Lakes and replacement. (Continued from Page 1) priorities for 2018. “That person should have a vested interest in Miami Lakes. That individual should share our vision and live through it as well. With four council seats up for grabs in August and November, Cid cautioned residents to vote for candidates with the best interest of the town instead of engaging in politics. Marilyn Ruano, who Cid appointed to replace former council member Tony Lama until the county’s August election, is running to retain her seat, while Joshua Dieguez, Carlos O. Alvarez, Jeffrey Rodriguez and former council member Robert Meador are running for three open seats due to term limits in November. Cid praised Ruano for making a fast transition from a community activist to council member. Mitigating the traffic congestion is among Miami Lakes’ top priorities for 2018. The town will experience more mobility for N.W. 59 Avenue and N.W. 79 Court after the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization’s governing board approved $2 mil-

lion for the project, which includes new sidewalks, safe pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, pedestrian scaled lighting, and accessible pedestrian signals along N.W. 59 Avenue between N.W. 154 and 176 streets. In addition, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) decided to include $1.5 million for the N.W. 87 Avenue extension to I-75 and the Gratigny Expressway in its transportation improvement plans. Cid said the ground breaking for the project should begin sometime this year. Another traffic enhancement project, adding a lane near the Windmill Gate community on N.W. 67 Avenue to connect to the Palmetto Expressway, should reduce traffic gridlock by 50 percent. The mayor said solutions are in place to improve mobility throughout the town but funding is a major road block. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, who organized the first Traffic Summit with FDOT and county officials, said he was surprised when he discovered the agencies hardly spoke to each other over the traffic con-

ditions. “It was shocking how they don’t talk to each other, Rodriguez said at the Chamber event. “But we are pushing and pushing it through. Let’s see how it works. For a lighter solution for traffic relief, Miami Lakes has partnered with SPIN, a bicyclesharing company that operates a station-less system, which residents use a mobile app for reservations, and launched Freebee, a golf cart-like mini bus to transport residents around town. Cid said Miami Lakes is focusing on completing the master plan for Miami Lakes Optimist Park in an effort to win back residents, who use the parks and recreation facilities in Doral, Weston and Pembroke Pines. The town initially proposed borrowing the money but many residents shot down the idea. While the town is seeking other options, Cid indicated it’s a do or die issue since the competition is stealing “our kids away. “These are our competitors and if we don’t develop the park we will be left far behind, Cid said. “We must bring back our kids. It’s now or never.

Goleman senior Gabriel Hernandez receives $1,500 JetStream Credit Union grant JetStream Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Miami Lakes, awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Gabriel Hernandez, a senior at Barbara Goleman High School. As a Juntos Avanzamos credit union, JetStream partnered with Coopera to identify a local Hispanic high school senior who was a deserving scholarship recipient. Students that participate in the Finance Academy at Barbara Goleman were asked to submit essays that described why they should be considered for the grant. Certain pre-requisites had to be met including grade point average, considering a career in business, and community involvement. Various essays were submit-

ted, but Hernandez’s definitely stood out. He is a scholar athlete. He plays football and soccer, for which he serves as team captain. A member of the National Honor Society, he maintains a weighted GPA of 4.8. He also finds time to volunteer in the community with over 200 hours of community service including tutoring for immigrant students. His goal is to become an accountant/financial advisor. “At JetStream Federal, we feel the need to help the professionals of tomorrow by providing them with the tools they need today to build a better future, said Vanessa Miranda, manager of HR and Community Outreach.

Clark Gable Slept Here opens on February 2 THE MIAMI LAKER

In February, The Main Street Players will present “Clark Gable Slept Here,” the second show of the 2017-2018 season. This dark comedy by local playwright Michael McKeever, is two steps short of a farce. The fast-paced play is a peek behind the curtain of life in the

Hollywood fast lane. The show takes place in a suite at the classic hotel Chateau Marmont on the night of the Golden Globe Awards. What transpires is a bleak, tragic and unapologetically hilarious look at what the movers and shakers of Tinsel Town are will-

NQC serves up classic Cuban comfort foods PAGE 4

JANUARY 19, 2018 THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Located behind the Marathon gas station at 6189 Miami Lakes Drive in the Lake Katharine Shopping Center, a small gem lies in place of what used to be a former Farm Stores. NQC is not the typical fast food place. Instead of dishing out day-old fries or an unhealthy burger, NQC serves up gourmet Cuban comfort food with healthy options as well as locally crafted beer. Mylo Gonzalez, owner and long-time Miami Lakes resident, was born into the restaurant business. With a retired chef as a mom, and even corunning El Pimiento with his family back in 2014, Gonzalez had years of experience. Not to mention many ideas that included some sort of quick-service that would have wholesome food and modern twists on traditional meals any South Floridian would recognize. The name NQC is an acronym with many definitions. At first,

Gonzalez and his wife decided on NQC to stand for “Natural Quality Cooking”, but after a comment from one of his regulars about his wife’s disdain for cooking, a light bulb went off, and thus “No Quiero Cocinar,” which means “I don’t want to cook” in Spanish, was born. Another denotation was later added as well. “With inspiration from the customer base here in Miami Lakes, I said you know what? I’m going to do some sort of comfort food, and I’m going to attach a healthy menu as well, and call it NQC, Not Quite Cuban.” Gonzalez said. Some of the mouth-watering items on the menu include a selection of “comfort bowls” complete with options of beef tenderloin mixed in with sweet plantains. Lunch isn’t the only grub they serve, breakfast burritos and an omelette with all the fixin’s are available for early birds as well. Talks about supper are also in the works. “In February we’re going to

open for dinner service. The fixed menu will be based on a chicken, fish, pork or a beef type of dish and every week the menu is going to change. We’re going to be open until 7 p.m.” Gonzalez said. Outside of the small cooking area, a small dock was built in what used to be a patch of trees and grass. Ornate with patio lights and vibrant colors, the dock is reserved for small, special events. “This used to be a dead space and I like to do hidden gems, but this place needed a lot of work. It was all trees and stuff,” Gonzalez explained. “We’re going to do a monthly food and beer tasting. We also have wedding books, and we have our first coming in February. They wanted something cool and different, and that’s what we have. We close the drive-through and put a platform so people can dance. It’s really nice and cozy.” To order from this unique watering hole, download the app, NQC Grub, on either the App Store for iPhone or Google Play on other devices. Movement Mortgage opens branch in Miami Lakes Town Center By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff In the middle of the 2008 economic crisis, ex-NFL player Casey Crawford and co-founder Toby Harris dreamt of creating a mortgage company that would center its ideals around God, family and community. Since its creation, Movement Mortgage has set up shop in 48 states and continues to grow and expand, passing Chase mortgage as the seventh largest purchase lender in the nation and the third largest growing company in The U.S. The company now has over 4,500 employees and holds several offices in Florida, with one of them residing in the Town of Miami Lakes. The new branch is located in Town Center at 15100 N.W. 67 Avenue Suite 403, in the Promenade Building. Orly Garcia, the branch’s market leader, remembers when the office first opened with no desks, chairs or even co-workers. Garcia sat in a corner of his office with nothing but an iPad and ham sandwich. He now runs the largest territory in Florida with operations from Daytona to The Keys. “I’m Cuban, and you need to know Miami to work in Miami. I chose Miami Lakes because it was easier for me, and also for our customers and borrowers to get to and from. You can access us from South Miami or Broward. It’s a central location,

I grew up close by and used to come to Main Street all the time as a kid,” He reminisced. “It’s an easy sell for me, because it’s a beautiful location and we walk over to Main Street and have lunch. I had to be in Miami Lakes.” In addition to becoming a fast-growing company, Movement Mortgage focuses on the needs of the commonwealth. Almost 45 percent of their company is owned by the Movement Foundation – a cause created to give 45 cents from every dollar made to communities in need. They’ve built farms in Uganda so villagers can sustain themselves, another mission just recently came back from Haiti, and a group is expected to visit Puerto Rico in March. “So every quarter we do something, and we also have the foundation where every month we give away $10,000 to an organization of our liking. It’s all about the culture. We are obviously in a business, but it’s about family, God and how we operate,” he says. Besides their communal involvement and brief history, Movement Management is also technology driven – with rapidly changing new ways to help make loans easier for their customers. Their user-friendly app can be used to connect borrowers to local lenders and even help find quotes that match their budget.

“We’re like the Google of mortgages. Our headquarters is very sleek and innovative, and our technology is up there. Crawford wants to invest back in technology. We invest in our loan officers, community and realtors. That’s the difference between us and everybody else, and that’s why we’re the fastest growing lenders,” he says. With interest rates at an all time low and houses being cheaper than they were almost eight years ago, Garcia had some advice for prospective homeowners looking to buy in 2018. “Try to get into that home sooner rather than later. In 1994, Bunn spent a year in Los Angeles performing with several bands, and recorded with a prominent blues artist in the historic A&M records in Hollywood. He also had the privilege of hanging out with his long-time friend and mentor, Russell Ferrante, Grammy-win-

After a short stint in Los Angeles, Bunn's family moved to Miami where he recorded his original jazz project, The Jackson Bunn Group Chosen Path. They performed at nightclubs and festivals throughout South Florida including Fort Lauderdale's Sunday Jazz Brunch, City of Hollywood Art Circle Park, and he even opened for Bela Fleck at Sunfest West Palm Beach in 1998. He performed at the 2002 Atlanta Jazz Festival and opened for legendary drummer, Roy Haynes. In early 2003, Bunn joined the popular South Florida top 40 band, Pangea. They performed at weddings, corporate functions and nightclubs for the past 14 years. Having recently parted ways amicably with Pangea, Bunn is excited to announce that he will be performing with South Florida’s premier horn band The Brass Evolution. Bunn has also been a MiamiDade Public Schools music educator since 2003. He has taught elementary and middle school keyboard, orchestra, chorus, bucket drumming and guitar. He has four children, and he and his wife Ana are longtime residents of Miami Lakes. Bunn’s Chosen Path, and holiday jazz CD are available at www.cdbaby.com/jacksonbunn.

Preview of Town Council agenda The Miami Lakes Town Council was expected to discuss and vote on an agenda full of ordinances, resolutions and new business items during its January 16 regular meeting. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to amend the site plan review procedures and creating architectural review standards. The new ordinance addresses an active development cycle that brought to light concerns over quality design and compatibility of development. • Lawmakers were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to create the Town’s own franchise agreement with Florida Power and Light for 30 years. The town is expected to receive about $1.2. million a year during the duration of the agreement. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s code for a special election. The new measure addresses any vacancies on the town council that need to be filled during a special election, and the qualifying period should start on the first Monday after the Town Council schedules the special election. According to state law, the notice of a special election to fill a vacancy on the Town Council should be published two times, at least 10 days prior to the first day set for qualifying to run for political office. • Council members, on first reading, were expected to approve an ordinance to address a new state law that allows com-

munications equipment to be installed in the town’s rights-ofway. In light of the new law, the town imposed a six month moratorium to thoroughly review the bill, evaluate its implication and prepare an ordinance that ensures the town’s code complies with state statutes. • Lawmakers, on first reading, were expected to approve an ordinance amending the town’s current budget to shift funds over legal fees, beautification projects, parks improvements and Hurricane Irma-related expenses. • Council members were expected to authorize the town manager to renew the interlocal agreement with Miami-Dade County Film office to permit for the use of town property and services. • Council members also were expected to authorize the town manager to execute a work order with Kimley-Horn and Associates to update the town’s stormwater master plan in an amount not to exceed $60,344. • Lawmakers were expected to authorize the town manager to execute a contract with Hartzell Construction to replace windows and doors at the Mary Collins Community Center in an amount not to exceed $56,000.

• Council members were expected to approve a waiver of the competitive solicitation process and authorize the town manager to execute a contract with La Perla Contractors for construction of an enclosure to house the Government Center’s emergency generator in an amount not to exceed $210,000. • Under new business, council members were expected to discuss a proposal by Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez and Ceaser Mestre to allow council members with a concealed weapon permit to carry a handgun on the dais, along with a separate request by Rodriguez to install metal detectors at Miami Lakes Town Hall. Also, council members were expected to discuss Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to direct town staff to calculate how much revenues are derived from Miami Lakes hotels through the county’s Tourist and Convention Development Taxes. The county has been collecting the tax but Miami Lakes has never realized its share of the revenues. Rodriguez is proposing a resolution to convert the overpass to a bridge park over I-75 at Miami Lakes Drive, which would allow the expansion of the Town’s trails and green space master plan.

In fact, her classroom is her largest mosaic. Her passion for her career as well as the wellbeing for “her kids” has granted her the honor of Teacher of the Year at Miami Lakes Educational Center. Students walk into her classroom and become immediately immersed in living, breathing art, in bright vibrant colors or even in muted pastels or ink blots and advertising campaigns. There is a sense of orderly chaos. Everywhere there are students drawing, either by hand or using drawing software. Tables are covered in

Correction: Father Murphy overlooked in recent article

In the article commemorating the 50th anniversary of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, which appeared in the January 5 issue, one of the prominent religious leaders was inadvertently overlooked. Father James Murphy served as the church pastor and played a very influential role in the Miami Lakes community for 15 years prior to his death. The Town of Miami Lakes renamed a section of Miami Lakeway North in his honor.

Before joining the MLEC family in 2004, she taught graphic design at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School and before that she worked at Warner Brothers. wellbeing and assurance of knowing that I have expectations that they are successful in my classroom so they can leave and graduate with a sense of achievement, but also knowing that they have abilities, skills, and talents in life.” To Soto, her students are “her kids,” not just students. She does not just teach them how to master Photoshop and Illustrator, she does not only teach them about public relations and advertising or mass marketing and audience analytics. Odalis Soto teaches her kids to “be professional” and to believe in themselves while proving to them that she believes in their ability to succeed. She has left her mark on countless students, but she has permanently left a mark on Miami Lakes Educational Center. In 2011 she and her students created a mosaic, the vivid colored tiles were broken, smoothed and later painstakingly rearranged to create the Jaguar, the school’s mascot, under the school’s name. Reminding us all that we, like this beautiful art piece, are a mosaic.

Bob Graham Education Center’s (BGEC) two top teachers for 2017-18 are Lusila Garcia, who was named Teacher of the Year, and Tabitha Stanley Williams, who was named Rookie Teacher of the Year. Garcia is a fourth- and fifthgrade teacher of the gifted program at BGEC. She graduated from FIU in 1995 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and began her teaching career at Poinciana Park Elementary in Liberty City. She taught there for eight years, and in 2004 she joined the BGEC family. She is the oldest of three siblings. Her parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic in 1969 looking for a better life. In their mind the means to that end, was an education. From an

early age, they instilled the importance and the value of an education. The purpose of that was not just to be financially independent and successful, but to be able to make a positive impact in society. One by one, all of her siblings graduated college and went on to be contributing members of society and enriched their parent’s legacy. This became the basis of her educational philosophy. This was one of the two reasons she became a teacher. She believes in the power behind an educated person and the decisions they make that can influence generations. The second reason she became a teacher was because she wanted to make a difference in the life of a child. When Garcia started teaching

over 20 years ago, she went into a second grade classroom armed with the latest educational trends and all the good intentions her small frame could hold. No child left behind, not on her watch. As the year progressed, she discovered that her children needed a hug just as desperately as they needed to learn their vocabulary. Her students needed to know they mattered just as badly as they needed to learn their multiplication facts. Over the years, Garcia has come to realize that what her students learned was just as important as how she made them feel while learning. BGEC’s Rookie Teacher of the Year is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) teacher. Williams said she is happy to

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Prior to the holiday break, the students of Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Mission Club held a holiday party to prepare special stocking stuffers for children of families in need at Christmas. The annual event held at Pace was sponsored by Stephen Pelzer, a

class of 2012 Pace alumnus and his family. It was 15 years ago when Pelzer, at just 8 years old, was filling Christmas food baskets with his family and realized something was missing, candy for the children’s stockings. Following a trip to the store with his mother, Pelzer was able to add candy into each of the

baskets that year and a tradition was born. Since then, it is estimated that Pelzer has given 3,000 candy stocking stuffer bags to various groups in the South Florida community. As a freshman at Pace in 2009, Pelzer decided to bring his annual tradition to his classmates in the Mission Club, and

this holiday season marked the ninth year in which students have participated. The group filled 180 bags of candy which were later distributed by the Pelzer Family to the Broward House, a homeless shelter and transitional residence in Fort Lauderdale as well as a halfway

house in the area. In the words of Pelzer, “Santa Claus is what you do, not who you are,” and the students at Monsignor Edward Pace High School hope to help him bring in holiday cheer and sweet treats to children for many more years to come.

Dade Christian School sets Lilian Gonzalez named Teacher of the Homecoming starting Jan. 29 Year at Lawton Chiles Middle School Celebrations did not end at the holiday season at Dade Christian School. Homecoming, a significant part of the school’s traditions, will be commemorated starting Monday, January 29. Although the school’s first graduating class was in 1967, Homecoming traditions didn’t start until the mid 70s. Students enjoy a whole week of dressing-down with a daily change in theme. This year, students will be able to dress up as their favorite Internet memes, along with a tacky tourist day and a day dedicated to dressing as a continent their grade was assigned to. “They absolutely love it and look forward to it every year,” Marketing director Rene Gonzalez said. The exciting events of the week end with a basketball game along with carnival-like game booths and bounce houses at night. Alumni are invited to the game with their own VIP tent and food spread. All grades even gather at the gym for their pep rally, where all students wear their game-ready homecoming shirts. Parents are also part of the fun. Not only do they help in their child’s elaborate dressdown day costumes, but they also hold a hallway decorating competition. Moms and dads are also invited to join the pep rally alongside students and staff. Of course, homecoming would not be complete without its king and queen. Homecom-

ing court and announcements are voted on during weekends leading up to the main event. The Alumni of the Year is also elected, and winners are announced on game day. A basketball all-star from seasons is Brock Stephenson, class of 2016, who now plays for University of Central Florida. Basketball isn’t Dade Christian’s only forte; other alumni that have continued their passion through college are Paul McIntosh, class of ’16 who now plays baseball for University of West Virginia and Ivan Arenas, another ’16 grad who plays soccer for Barry University. They’ve also been successful in Volleyball, winning the 2016 FCAA Volleyball State champions. “It is definitely about the game, but more than that, It’s about school spirit and being proud of the family we are and the mission our school practices.” Gonzalez said. Senior students are in charge of the whole ordeal, Coming up with the different themes and creating events that are planned in advance to have every grade involved. Middle schoolers and upperclassmen have the final decision as to which day hosts which theme. The basketball game will take place at the school’s gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. with games and booths starting at 4:30 p.m. on February 2. For more information, visit www.dadechristian.org/homecoming.

By The Miami Laker staff Just before she earned her Bachelor’s degree at Florida International University, Lilian Gonzalez discovered her true calling while working alongside her trusted adviser as an intern – teaching art. “I had the opportunity to intern at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary under the guidance of one of the best art educators in the county, Mabel Morales,” Gonzalez said. “My mentor was inspiring and made me realize that art is a very important part of a child’s development. I was my mentor’s last intern and she now is my visual arts district supervisor.” Gonzalez has inspired her students through art and her colleagues painted her with a creative brush, awarding her Lawton Charles Middle School Teacher of the Year for 20172018. Gonzalez said she was elated when she learned about the honor and thanked her students and faculty staff for sharing her vision of making art a part of her students’ lives. “I am very excited and happy to be able to facilitate an outlet of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication for my students,” she said.

“My goal is for my students to be able to experience different mediums and creative avenues and that they find the artistic path they truly enjoy the most.” Gonzalez has been teaching at Lawton Chiles Middle School for two years but left her mark at Eugenia B. Thomas K8 Center where she taught art for 10 years. Besides sponsoring Art Club activities, Gonzalez is also involved in assisting in improving her school’s academics programs for students. She has been part of various committees that worked to organize and plan for the school’s improvement, and she’s a part of the leadership team that led the special areas

LILIAN GONZALEZ and electives groups. Gonzalez treats each school year as getting the best out of her students. “Together with cooperation of all, it will be another great artistic year,” she said.

Mistique Hernandez named ML Middle Rookie of Year

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Sixth- and seventh-grade Social Studies teacher, Mistique Hernandez, has been named Rookie Teacher of the Year at Miami Lakes Middle School. Hernandez earned her Associates degree at Miami-Dade College and finished her studies at Florida International University, acquiring her Bachelors and Masters degree. She started her profession at South Florida Autism Charter three years ago. Since then, she has transferred over to Miami Lakes Middle. “It feels nice to know that my colleagues support me and commend me for all of the time and hard work I put in on a daily basis,” said Hernandez. For as long as she can remem-

ber, Hernandez always wanted to be a teacher, she even dressed as one for career day in elementary school. “I remember being 7 years old and going to my grandmother’s house just to teach her English. I used to assign her alphabet homework,” Hernandez said. Hernandez’s main focus in her career are her students. By connecting with them and being understanding in any type of situation, Hernandez takes her time in learning her student’s interests to engage them in learning. “In my teaching philosophy, I believe that if students feel safe and accepted they become excited to learn,” Hernandez explained. “I also like to say ‘connecting with the student’.”

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker As the first academic semester came to an end, the students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School's Law Studies Academy experienced a real look at the judicial system as they were assigned with presenting mock trials for their final project. The students brought the courtroom to the Pace campus as they worked on a fictional assault and battery case of State v. Randall. In this assignment, the class was divided into teams where one was the prosecution and the other team played the role of the defense. Other students played the role of the case characters, the jury or the trial audience. In the weeks leading up to the mock trials, students worked closely with teacher John M. Rodriguez to refine their opening statements, direct examination, cross examination and closing arguments. As the students prepped, they received feedback that would be taken into account as they pieced it all together in the final trials. These mock trials were conducted as if the students were in a real courtroom. Students were also encouraged to dress professionally and conduct themselves like real trial lawyers. Lead teacher Rodriguez brings a highly experienced background to the Pace students after serving as a law enforcement officer and sergeant for eight years. He then left law enforcement to become a practicing attorney, where he worked for 25 years. Throughout his legal career, he tried hundreds of cases and served as Assistant State Attorney and Chief MISTIQUE HERNANDEZ was named Rookie Teacher of the Prosecutor of the Traffic Year at Miami Lakes Middle School. Division. The Academy for Law is a concentrated track of courses offered at Pace to help students explore their interest in lawrelated careers. The program l hoo offers Criminal Justice Operr Sc e t f A e ation courses, with a goal to aid Car students in providing insights on careers within the legal system such as attorneys, paralegals and law enforcement. For more information on Pace's Academy for Law Studies, contact Rodriguez at JRodriguez02@pacehs.com.
