Giving Gators fulfill students’ holiday wish lists PAGE 2

JANUARY 18, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

The nonprofit Giving Gators, Miami Lakes councilmembers, Miami-Dade County Public School officials and sponsors joined forces to bring in the spirit of the holidays to local schools. Giving Gators collected Wish Lists from students in grades Pre-K to 12 who were asking to receive much needed articles including laptops, bicycles, and sneakers.

With the assistance of the community, and local business sponsors, the effort was able to raise over $2,800 in contributions to make the wish lists come true. “The students smiles were priceless when opening their gifts,” said Daylin Garcia of Giving Gators. “We are appreciative of all the sponsors and volunteers who made this event happen.”

To ensure a safe learning environment and violent-free learning place, the Miami-Dade County School Board adopted a newly-revised Code of Student Conduct (COSC), which is aligned to recent local, state and federal mandates with an emphasis on promoting a safe learning environment to ensure academic success. The COSC sets the standards of conduct expected of students in a purposeful safe learning environment in which the principles of care, courtesy and respect for the rights of others is valued. The move was a state requirement for public schools in Florida in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting massacre in Parkland where confused killer Nikolas Cruz killed 17 students and teachers and injured 17 others last year on Valentine Day’s

After the shooting, state lawmakers imposed new laws to ensure safety among students and teachers and programs for students battling mental health issues. To prevent violence at schools, Miami-Dade County Public Schools revised the COSC in hopes of easing the fears of parents, students, administrators and teachers. Most of the COSC revisions focus on the following: • Scope of Authority • Values Matter Recognition • Behaviors and Range of Corrective Strategies • Bullying and Harassment • Off-campus conduct • Threat of Violence • Under the Influence • Use of Technology and Computer-related offenses • Zero Tolerance Policy • Assignment to an Alternative Education Setting • Denial of Participating in Social and Extracurricular Activities • Denial of Bus Privileges • Manifestation Determination Procedures • Mental Health Services • New Glossary Terms The COSC highlights that threats and other behaviors committed on or off the school campus may be violations of the COSC and Florida law. Any violations may result in disciplinary actions imposed by local law enforcement authorities, in addition to those of the school/district. Now, parents/guardians, students, teachers, school site administrators can access the COSC by visiting http://ehandbooks.dadeschools.net/policies/90/index.htm. In addition, schools will be sending all parents/guardians a letter regarding the newly adopted COSC along with a copy of the Acknowledgement of Receipt and Review.

M.L. Chamber hosts new and retiring managers THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Before joining the ranks of the fire department, Edward Pidermann was a certified mortician, conducting the preparation of a deceased person for funeral and burial arrangements. “I found it not to be inspirational, Pidermann quipped. “I made a career change and with the help of a friend, I spent 30 years as a Miami firefighter. Pidermann’s three decade public service career meticulously prepared him for his new role as the new town manager for Miami Lakes. The Town Council tapped Pidermann, who previously was an assistant chief of management service for Broward County’s fire department, to replace Alex Rey, who’s retiring to take advantage of the government Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP). Rey passed the torch on to his successor at last week’s Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce membership meeting at Don Shula’s Hotel, where the two were the guest speakers for the event. Pidermann’s official start date is Monday, February 4, and Rey agreed to stay on as a consultant until March. Pidermann, 56, was conceived in Cuba but born in Miami. He said his mother and father were unaware she was pregnant when they left the communist country. “I was made in Cuba and born in Miami, Pidermann said. Pidermann said he was raised in Hialeah and moved to Miami Lakes in 1992. He graduated from Monsignor Edward Pace High School, Miami Dade College and St. Thomas University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He earned his Master’s in public administration from Florida International University. Pidermann said he initially retired as a firefighter following

a 30-year career, but accepted a friend’s job offer to join him as his assistant chief in Broward County. “I came out of retirement after a friend was appointed the fire chief and I accepted it, he said. Since he moved to Miami Lakes, Pidermann has been active in the community, serving as coach at the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes, where he coached his kids in baseball, softball and basketball. He was the first member of the Miami Lakes Youth Activity Task Force and served on the original Miami Lakes Charter Committee, which crafted out the town’s own constitution. As the new town manager, Pidermann said customer service is his top priority. “The industry that I came from, customer service was No. 1, he said. “I want to make it the top priority here. Whatever we can do to help our customers, we will do it. Pidermann also said the residents’ participation is a big part of his vision in moving the town forward. “I want residents to be very involved with participating in our town’s affairs, he said. “Decisions involving people, they should be involved in the decision-making process because that produces the best results. Rey, the town manager for more than 16 years, said Pidermann is up to the challenge to keep Miami Lakes moving in the right direction. “I think he will work real hard to make the community a success, Rey said. Rey highlighted the town’s accomplishments during his tenure as town manager. He said the entire stormwater drainage system, and other infrastructure built as part of the

original Miami Lakes community, has been all upgraded. Rey said Miami Lakes took over the streets and recreational parks, and the special taxing districts for street lighting, pocket and picnic parks, security guard gates and lake maintenance from Miami-Dade, and developed a relationship with the town’s committees, the Miami Lakes Optimist Club and Miami Lakes United Soccer Club that created recreation programs for more than 1,000 kids and 100 town events for residents. He said the Veteran’s Day Parade, the Fourth of July celebration and the new Food and Wine Festival Tasting are popular among residents and visitors. “The community participation has been amazing, Rey said. Rey said the town completed its upgrade projects at Royal Oaks Park, and the facility was so impressive that Club Atletico Penarol, the 127 year-old Uruguayan soccer team, which is ranked among the top 50 greatest soccer club teams in the world, has decided to make the recreation facility its practice home. Under Rey, the town renovated the Mary Collins Community Center and built a basketball court at the park, and built two new facilities, the Youth Center at Picnic Park East and the clubhouse for the Optimist Club. “Is the job done? No, Rey said. “Are we moving in the right direction? I think so. Pidermann praised Rey for a job well done and plans to establish a similar but different administration to help accomplish his goals. “It’ll be a little different from Alex Rey but produce the same results, Pidermann said.

By Aileen Delgado Special to The Miami Laker When Andrea Graham-Rechichi’s great-grandfather went to his father and said, “Dad, don’t sell the land, let’s develop it,” he had a vision for what Miami Lakes could be. Three generations later, Graham-Rechichi is working to maintain that dream, to “carry out a legacy,” continue building a town that feels like home. “My grandfather, made this company a community. I have watched this community around me develop throughout the years, and the people make this their home,” she said. She knows what that means. Graham-Rechichi grew up in Miami Lakes, attending both Miami Lakes Elementary and Miami Lakes Middle School. Graham-Rechichi recently visited Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). She was given the opportunity to take charge, as well as a time to shine as she became “Principal of the Day” for MLEC students. She toured every classroom and every hallway, visiting our labs and getting a feel for what it’s like to live and learn at MLEC. She also had the opportunity to visit The Harbinger

newsroom and share her vision for the town, as well as her own history with the town that her family founded. Graham-Rechichi attended the University of ColoradoBoulder for her undergraduate studies. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up,” she said. But she soon realized that she was passionate about history and politics. Ultimately, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and went on to join AmeriCorps, where she worked with children and closing the digital divide. “I don’t think that where a person is born should determine who they can become,” said Graham-Rechichi. Her work with children inspired her to do more, to see education as a way to help communities thrive. It inspired her to earn a master’s degree in non-profit management from The New School for Public Engagement in New York City. When she returned home to Miami Lakes, she spent some time as a program director at Honeyshine inc., where she was able to mentor young girls in building life skills for a stable future. She was working non-stop.

Then, one particularly busy holiday season, at a family dinner, her aunt helped her realize that she was the perfect fit for the family company. She could use her skills and her passion for community building right here, at home. Soon after, she became Vice President of Customer and Corporate Relations for The Graham Companies and began revamping the company’s community relations. She has launched the town’s social media accounts and continued to grow the town’s annual Festival of Lights, which has continued to grow since she took charge of it five years ago. Now, it’s a place where you see “everyone, from old to young, dancing around the fountain,” she said. This was, she said, always the goal of the festival, a place to bring the community together. “My father always instilled in me to do something that I was passionate about and that I loved,” she said. “I am passionate about education. I’m an activist and my work allows me to continue my family’s legacy and to also give time to causes and organizations that I love,” she said.

Preview of January 15 Town Council meeting THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council was expected to approve three ordinances on first reading, several resolutions including awarding contracts for capital improvement projects and council members’ new business proposals during the January 15 regular Town Council meeting. • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance which would protect tree canopy throughout the town and adopt the town’s Beautification Master Plan. The proposed measure would ensure the integrity of the town signature appeal, its tree canopy, is property maintained, restored in areas where it has been diminished and replanted with appropriate materials (right tree right place). • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance which would establish a restricted long-term infrastructure renewal and replacement fund to renew or replace depreciating or decaying general fund assets, excluding routine repairs and maintenance or new construction. If it becomes law, the ordi-

nance would establish a $150,000 annual fund contribution from the general fund, which may increase as needed through the budget process. • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s budget to carry over the prior year’s estimated surplus to fund several projects that includes funding for one-time operating and or capital improvement expenditures, and adjusted amounts from grants and donations for town’s events. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to prioritize funding from the State Legislative Session including $2 million for Phase 2 of Royal Oaks Drainage project, $6 million for the Miami Lakes Business Park Northeast Resilient Transportation Infrastructure, and $853,000 for the Miami Lakes Business Park Southeast Resilient Transportation Infrastructure. • Council members were expected to approve three separate but seemly-related resolutions to create three advisory committees from residents of the Royal Oaks East, Royal Oaks Section One and Miami Lakes Section One Special Taxing Districts for the purpos-

es of reviewing the yearly budget for each respective special taxing district and to promulgate recommendations to the Town Council and staff for adjustments to the level of service, budget or any other related matters. • Council members were expected to authorize the town manager to execute a contract with Southeastern Engineering Contractors for the N.W. 67 Avenue widening project in an amount not to exceed $602,000. The scope of the work includes traffic improvements at the intersection of Ludlum Road and N.W. 167 Street, including widening the roadway to incorporate an additional through lane for northbound traffic at the south leg of the intersection. • Council members were expected to authoriz the town manager to execute a contract with Arbor Tree and Land for Canal Bank Stabilization Phase II project in an amount not to exceed $1 million. • Council members were expected to approve Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez’s idea for a public transportation and traffic summit with the town’s neighboring cities and communities. Rodriguez said the summit is

JANUARY 18, 2019

needed since the county has proposed six major public transit routes known as SMART Plan which doesn’t include Northwest Miami-Dade such as Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North and Hialeah Gardens. • Council members were expected to discuss Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to amend the town attorney’s contract and assign Assistant Town Attorney Lorenzo Cobiella to full-time with the town. Cobiella is a member of the law firm of Gastesi and Associates. Raul Gastesi is currently the town attorney on a full-time basis. • Council members were expected to discuss Councilmember Jeffrey Rodriguez’s proposal to install the first Little Free Library at Picnic Park West, which is a non-profit organization that enables the exchange of millions of books in neighborhoods through donations. • Council members were expected to discuss Councilmember Josh Dieguez’s pro-

PAGE 5

posal to direct the town manager to take all steps to form Complete Count Committees (CCC) as one step to position Miami Lakes for a successful census count. • Council members were expected to discuss Cid’s proposal for a 2025 Strategic Plan for a friendly, open, innovative, effective and efficient government for its residents and businesses. Cid wants the plan to be open and transparent and solicit as much input as possible from the town’s stakeholders. • Council members were expected to discuss Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal to set a date as soon as possible for the town’s new blasting advisory committee to meet with the town’s state legislative representatives as well as with any new state representatives that may have changed committee assignments. The proposal also includes the town manager working along with the committee as the liaison with assistance of outside consultants.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart files legislation for third time for Town’s Zip Code U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Florida) introduced yet another bill that would designate the United State Postal Service to create an independent zip code for the Town of Miami Lakes. Congress passed DiazBalart’s two similar bills but the Senate never took up the issue on both of those occasions. With a new Congress, DiazBalart filed another bill hoping to finally get the Senate’s approval this year. “For nearly a decade, I have been working alongside Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and the Town of Miami Lakes to create a unique zip code for the town,” Diaz-Balart said in statement after introducing the bill. “Legislation that I introduced in the past two Congresses have overwhelmingly passed in the House but unfortunately were not even considered in the Senate. The impact a unique zip code would have on Miami Lakes residents cannot be understated.” Diaz-Balart added that from higher insurance rates to election and census confusion to branding and economic development, lack of a unique zip code has been a costly and burdensome issue for his constituents. “That’s why I will not relent until Miami Lakes and its residents are granted the relief they need, and why I am introducing

REP. MARIO DIAZ-BALART similar legislation again this Congress,” he said. “I will continue to work with my House and Senate colleagues to get this bill to the president’s desk and am hopeful that Cid and the town will be granted the unique zip code they do desperately need.” The Congressman thanked Cid for leading the charge on such an important issue. “He has been a great partner to work with and continues to be Miami Lakes’ strongest advocate,” he said. “Whether in Washington D.C. or in Florida, he has spent countless hours presenting the town’s case for a unique zip code and I am grateful for his support. Together, I am confident that we will get this bill signed into law.”

In 2006, then-Governor Jeb Bush appointed Lagoa to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge David Levy on a Miami appeals court. Prior to joining the bench, Lagoa, 52, practiced in both civil and criminal arenas. In 2003, she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Barbara Goleman High’s senior defensive tackle Kamal Barnes was selected to the Miami-Dade County All-Star Team, which lost to Broward County 35-0 in the Miami Dolphins All-Star Game last Friday at Traz Powell Stadium. Kamal has been a four-year starter and is one of the school’s all-time leaders in games played, sacks, tackles and three blocked punts this season. The 5-10, 230-pound player recorded eight tackles (4 solo) and 2 sacks for the Gators and is expected to announce his college choice next month. But sports take a back seat as academics is Kamal’s No. 1 priority in high school and college. “My goal for college is to major in engineering and to keep my GPA higher than a 3.5 and my second goal is to become a member of the football program and become a powerful asset to the team.,” he said. “I also plan on training hard

After leading the Panther’s offensive line in a 35-32 victory in the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl, Florida International University’s graduate senior Jordan Budwig was named to the Associated Press All-Bowl Team, the organization announced following the game. Budwig is the only offensive lineman from Conference USA named to the list, while being just one of four league players overall given the prestigious honor. Budwig shielded junior quarterback Christian Alexander, who was making his first career start in the bowl game in place of injured C-USA Newcomer of the Year junior quarterback James Morgan. Alexander passed for a FIU bowl record 209 yards, while running back Anthony Jones rushed for a bowl record three touchdowns. The Panthers rushed for 236 yards overall against the Rockets. The start at left guard

JORDAN BUDWIG for Budwig was his 50thstraight overall, which is a career best at FIU. The Fort Lauderdale native didn't allow a sack all season, anchoring an FIU offensive line that only gave up eight sacks for the entire 2018 season. The eight sacks is an all-time season low for FIU, while ranking third-best in the NCAA this season.

Florida International University third baseman Austin Shenton has been named the 2018 Perfect Game/Rawlings Summer Collegiate Player of the Year for the 2018 season. Shenton, who played for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League, was the Cape Cod championship series MVP, as the Gatemen won the summer title. Shenton hit .349 with four home runs and 30 RBI during

the 2018 Cape Cod Baseball League regular season. The 30 RBI were second most in the Cape season. In the playoffs, Shenton hit .522 and drove in 12 runs over six postseason games. Last season at FIU, Shenton hit .344 to lead the Panthers. The left-handed hitter belted nine home runs and had 29 RBI. Shenton added 11 doubles and led FIU in runs (49), hits (73), and total bases (111).

FIU soccer star Santiago Patino invited to 2019 Major League Soccer Combine

Florida International University’s men’s soccer standout Santiago Patino has been invited to the 2019 Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine in Orlando this month. Patino is the third Panthers player to be invited and the second-consecutive, following Paul Marie who took part in the 2018 Combine. Patino is one of 60 players from universities in the United States and Canada to be invited and one of only two from Conference USA. “We are very happy for Santi on being invited to the MLS Combine,” said FIU men’s soccer head coach Kevin Nylen. “This is deserving and we are excited for him to showcase himself and to represent FIU.” Prospective selections in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft had an opportunity to play scrimmages for scouts of all MLS teams, as well as go through various tests and speak to interested teams ahead of the SuperDraft, which was scheduled for January 11, at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. Patino appeared in 16 games for the Panthers during the 2018 campaign, starting in all 16 and playing 1,294 minutes. He logged 90-or-more minutes eight times during the season. He was recently named to the United Soccer Coaches AllSoutheast Region Second Team, was also named the C-USA Golden Boot Award recipient – given to the top goal scorer in CUSA play – while also earning First Team All-Conference honors. Patino finished his exceptional FIU career having played in 69 games with 51 starts and recorded 83 points on 37 goals and nine assists. He ends his collegiate career ranked seventh on the Panthers' all-time scoring list.

Marcel Navarro named Teacher of the Year at Monsignor Pace By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker After an all school mass prior to Thanksgiving at Monsignor Edward Pace High School (PACE) students, faculty and staff cheered enthusiastically as principal Garcia announced that “Teacher of the Year” had been awarded to long time fine arts teacher, Marcel Navarro. For Navarro, who has been a member of PACE’S faculty since 1999, art has always been a part of who he is and he attributes this to several individuals throughout his life. His initial introduction to art was by his mother, who he can recall spent much of his childhood making creative birthday piñatas and Halloween costumes for the entire family. He remembers sitting at the dining room table to draw with his brothers as his mother always encouraged his love of art while he discovered his own unique talents. Another person who had a significant influence on his future ambitions was Osvaldo Gutierrez, a self-taught artist and friend of Navarro’s parents from their native Cuba. Navarro recalls being a young boy living on S.W. 8 street and occasionally visiting Gutierrez with his family. “He would always give my brothers and I paint brushes and paper. It was awesome!” Two of Gutierrez’s original pen works hung in his family’s home for years. Navarro stated “those images still appear in my mind, and have influenced many of the works I have created throughout the years.” Navarro gives much credit to his drawing teacher and Cuban artist, Ana Guerra. She taught him how to look at things differently and in a way that sparked his creativity. Her approach to seeing and inter-

MARCEL NAVARRO preting art has greatly inspired Navarro not only as an artist, but as an educator. “I always push my students to look at things from a new angle, and with art, the possibilities are endless.” Navarro attended Southwest Senior High School and received the first and only Presidential Scholarship award by Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. During that time he took a wide range of classes including printmaking, etching and photography. However, his longtime preference of medium has always been graphite and color pencils. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Drawing and Mixed Media. After graduation Navarro returned to South Florida, where he obtained his Florida Teacher Certification in art and began his career as a substitute teacher at Glades Junior High

School. In 1999, he met PACE’S current principal Ana Garcia, who at the time was assistant principal of curriculum and instruction. Understanding his vast gift and the value it would bring to the students at PACE, Garcia encouraged him to apply for an available teaching position for the following school year. He followed through and was hired. As an artist, Navarro has been involved with multiple exhibitions throughout South Florida such as the Teacher’s Choice Exhibition and the Miami International University of Art & Design. At PACE he has also offered his talents in numerous ways. Navarro is responsible for the design of a sponsor tree sculpture in the chapel and also designed the school’s 50th Anniversary cross. After nearly two decades teaching Spartans, Navarro, feels at home at PACE and confesses that he could not see himself anywhere else. “I enjoy connecting with my students through a medium that we mutually enjoy, yet we all perceive in a very unique and personal way.” Navarro says that the greatest part of having a long history at PACE, is when his former students who have decided to pursue careers in art, contact him for advice. He is humbled knowing that similar to his own mentors and teachers, he has also influenced their view of art and has inspired them beyond the classroom. Navarro admits, “As an educator, that’s the best compliment I could ever ask for.”

JANUARY 18, 2019

The “values matter for the month” of December at Spanish Lake Elementary School featured citizenship. Sharon Wallen’s fifth grade students went caroling and visited each class throughout the school singing Bob Marley’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” and Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World”. During daily morning announcements students shared the duties, obligations and functions of a citizen. They recited The Preamble to The Constitution and shared its meaning. They discussed dreams for a peaceful today and a better tomorrow featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech “I Have A Dream” and talked about The Statue of Liberty and her torch opening our doors to others. For her 17th year in the spirit of good citizenship Wallen’s class is participating in the 24th annual H.O.P.E. contest which is sponsored to help overcome pet euthanasia and help pets every day. This year the contest focuses on making pet owner-

ship less expensive and to ensure pets get the love and care they need. Students answer packet questions, develop a multimedia project for community awareness and often do a collection of food for animals and pet supplies for a local shelter. The contest is sponsored by The Humane Society of Greater Miami, Adopt-A-Pet and Miami Dade County Animal Services. Several students’ comments demonstrate the consciousness that was raised by the contest. Frankie Jackson said, “It has made me more empathetic towards life. Put yourself in the animal’s place. The animal cruelty could be a human being. I must be a part of stopping it.” Roselyn Riveras said, “Lessons learned have made us more aware of what’s happening in our community and I can now do something to make a difference.” “These are lifelong lessons for our community and the world to care for animals and treat them humanely,” said Justine Lahor.

Tisdol’s name was called and her heart began to race. The feeling was surreal. Tisdol said she is humbled to be recommended and voted as Teacher of the Year. It meant a lot to be recognized by her colleagues as one deserving of such an accolade. Tisdol hopes that her students become innovative risk takers that can think critically in order to synthesize information, solve problems and generate new ideas. Tisdol trusts that a love for learning is ignited in them, so they would continue to seek knowledge on their own throughout the rest of their lives, becoming lifelong learners.

Goleman alumni Sara Yanes named Teacher of the Year

As an alumni of the Barbara Goleman Senior High School graduating class of 2004, it's truly an honor to be recognized at her alma mater by her colleagues and be named as Teacher of the Year. Sara Yanes is humbled to be recognized for hard work and dedication in her career. To Yanes, it means that not only are her students aware of how hard they work in the classroom but her colleagues also see the dedication to her students academic achievements. Yanes would like for her students to remember her as someone who is always there to help them with whatever they need. As someone who never gives up on them and is as hard working as they are. As someone who is dedicated to their learning and academic success. As someone who understands that her students are human, they're going to make mistakes, there's no perfect student and that's okay. Yanes wants them to learn from their mistakes and grow as individuals from that, she wants them to continue to strive for excellence beyond their high

SARA YANES school years. Yanes also learns from her students, they have taught her that learning truly never stops. Through their class discussions, she learns something new every year and she’s learned to see literature from their perspective when they analyze it together. They've taught her to never give up on them! They surprise her all the time with their thoughts and writing. Yanes’s favorite part is seeing them become better writers and improve in their literature analysis as well as collaborations.

Irza Legra who has been named Teacher of the Year at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) is inspired by the wonder in children’s eyes. Whether it’s the first day of school or the last, each day students walk in wide-eyed, ready, expecting and writing. Legra has taught 14 years at BGEC which she considers a home. Legra is the department chair of Language Arts and teaches middle school. Legra believes if you show love, empathy, compassion and humility it will motivate students. It is important for her to be real and show students, that even though she might have been tested in many different ways, it has shaped her into the person she is today. Legra believes teaching children is a matter of the heart and she strides to inspire and motivate students every day.

Hialeah Miami Lakes seniors are ‘banking’ on a bright new future College bound high school seniors may be far from home and on their own in just a few short months. Many students worry about the need to be responsible for their own finances. Carmen Valdes shares, “Studying, working and paying for food and rent on my own is a scary prospect.” Fortunately, advanced placement US Government students at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School (HML) have an addi-

tional resource to help prepare them for the fall. HML has partnered with Wells Fargo’s Miami Lakes Branch and personal banker Liliana Henao to provide financial literacy workshops to these college bound students. The workshop series began with an introduction to banking in October, followed by a look at budgeting and savings in November. In February, students will

learn about establishing and responsibly using credit. In April, the series will conclude with a look at options and strategies to pay for college. According to Wells Fargo representative Henao, “It is a pleasure to educate students on finances the way I wish someone would have educated me at their age, because financial stability should always start early.”

JANUARY 18, 2019

Ana Mestre is in her second year as a Therapeutic Paraprofessional Assistant at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) and has been named as this year’s Paraprofessional of the Year. Mestre is currently assigned to a student that is visually impaired. Mestre feels that she is instrumental in preparing her student for life outside the school. She tries to make it as comfortable as possible for him while at the same time making sure he is treated like all the other students. Mestre truly believes in being positive in any circumstance and being able to leave a mark in the lives of others. Mestre has always had a passion to work with children and has truly fallen in love with her job.

Facelift underway for Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School

Construction funded by the Miami-Dade Public School’s General Obligation Bond, approved by Miami Dade County voters, is well under way at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML). HML was awarded $5,165,622 for interior and exterior renovations to the campus, originally opened in 1971. Groundbreaking began on October 12 of last year with a scope of work that includes new student restrooms, a gymnasium floor, a public announcement system, HVAC system and refurbished gymnasium bleachers inside the school. Exterior renovations include a resurfaced basketball court, new softball dugouts and a bus loop to improve traffic flow at peak times of the day. Principal Llisa Garcia makes the point that “with HML academics soaring, our students and staff will have a beautifully renovated school to match their amazing accomplishments.” The construction is scheduled for completion early in 2019.

Florida’s Support Education license plate gets a fresh look PAGE 18

JANUARY 18, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

After 25 years and more than a million miles on Florida’s highways, the Support Education specialty license plate has a fresh look. While the design is new, the cause remains the same – when a Florida resident purchases or renews their Support Education specialty tag, $20 goes directly back to support schools, teachers and students in the county where the tag is registered. In Miami Dade County, the funds support the work of The Education Fund, a nonprofit headquartered in Miami Lakes that serves students and teachers in Miami Dade County public schools. The license plate proceeds underwrite programs that help teachers use best practices to excite students to learn, transform schoolyards into Food Forests, improving students’ science achievement, help students get on the path to college and career, provide free school supplies to classrooms, with more than $1 million in supplies provided last year alone. “We use the funds from the state license plate to support public school classrooms across Miami Dade County. Students love the hands-on classroom projects made possible. We hope everyone will purchase the new education plate and help our students succeed,” said Linda Lecht, president of The Education Fund. Since its introduction as

Florida’s second specialty license plate in 1994, over $13 million dollars has been raised through the collaborative efforts of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF) in Tallahassee and local education foundation members throughout the state. The new design promotes the importance of education in the Sunshine State and is among only a few specialty tags in Florida where the money goes directly back into the county where the tag was purchased or renewed. Florida’s K-12 local education foundations invest in classroom innovation, recognize excellence and provide targeted support beyond what tax dollars provide such as free school supplies for students who can’t afford them, classroom grants for teachers and after-school enrichment programs.

“The Support Education specialty tag is a powerful way for citizens to demonstrate their commitment to our public schools and provide needed, local support for teachers and students,” said Mary Chance, president of the CFEF. “We are so excited to debut the new design and hope more Florida drivers will support their local teachers and students with the purchase or renewal of the Support Education license tag.” The annual fee for the Support Education specialty license plate is $25. Local taxes and state fees may apply and first-time purchase price and fees may vary based on scheduled vehicle registration renewal date. The new Support Education tag design is available now and can be purchased in-person at the local tax collector office or online at LicenseToLearn.com.

Dade Christian School’s senior class raised money and collected toys to give to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital On December 6, the senior class at Dade Christian School presented Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with money they raised and toys they collected. This fundraiser started last year with the junior class so this is the second year they’ve been doing this. Early last year, the donation was monetary; however, this year they were able to give money as well as toys from the kindergarten and elementary students. They wanted to do something to help in the fight for a cure for cancer and they wanted to gear it towards children. They decided that during the month of

October, Cancer Awareness Month, they would fundraise for Joe DiMaggio. Dade Christian teaches its students that it is not about the incentive but about the willingness to give and help others. It is about having a servant's heart. Some students and parents gave without even taking the incentive that was offered to them. Their goal is to continue doing this fundraiser for years to come. “I believe it's always good to give back and to make a difference in this world “ said Mrs. Grant-Allen, secondary english teacher.

In Memoriam:

Our Lady of the Lakes longtime veteran teacher Irma Tejeda

Irma Tejeda, a teacher at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School for 31 years who touched the lives of her students throughout her career, died on December 27. She was 58. Born in Cuba, Tejeda moved to Miami with TEJEDA her parents when she was one year old in 1961. She graduated from Hialeah Miami Lakes High School, where she met her future husband, Jorge Tejeda. After earning her Bachelor’s Degree in music from the University of Miami, Irma Tejeda landed her first teaching job at Our Lady of the Lakes and taught there until her death. Jorge Tejeda said his wife had an impact on her students who went on to reach their career goals and incessantly thanked her for her dedication and commitment in the classroom. “Her former students would visit her and let her know the impact she had on their lives,” he said. “During the school’s annual carnival, her former students would run up to her and hug her. She gave 100 percent to her kids and that’s why she was loved by everybody.” After more than four decades, Tejeda loved the worship, fellowship and the signing of songs like “Water and the Spirit.” “It really feels like family,” she said. “It’s my home away from home. Tejeda was very active in the church and the community for years. Her favorite hobby was playing the guitar and singing, her husband said. She taught the couple’s three daughters how to play the instrument and water ski. “She loved to play and sing,” he said. The staff at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School and Church said Tejeda will be missed and she was angel on earth. “The parish community of Our Lady of the Lakes is grateful to Almighty God for having bestowed upon us the gift of having had Mrs. Irma Tejeda as a teacher at our school from its founding to the present,” the school said on its website. Tejeda is survived by her husband and three daughters.
