Editorial

Hello and welcome to the May issue of the SA4 Mag. As I write this, shops, gyms, pubs etc are starting to reopen. It has been a tough year for everyone, and I am sure that it’s going to continue to be for many unfortunately, so where possible let’s all try and support the local businesses in the coming weeks and months.

these people dishing it out would be quite so quick to do it face to face with these 16 or 17 stone rugby players. I was absolutely gutted that Wales did not win the Grand Slam but I think it’s fair to say the rugby players would have been a little disappointed as well. What some people fail to see is professional rugby players and footballers, yes earn good money and have a nice lifestyle but that I am not a big gambler but every year I put £10 on Wales does not give us the right to abuse them for getting to win the Grand Slam in the rugby and this year I was something wrong in a game of football or rugby – or even seconds away from getting £500 back and a Welsh grand just being unlucky. slam. I do not think I have ever been so gutted as when France sneaked the game in the last minutes and put a People also won’t see the work that goes in behind the very harsh abrupt end to Wales winning the Grand Slam scenes with these players. It’s like when someone gets a (and myself getting £500 in the process). It was another tradesman around and says they were expensive as they level of disappointment but as an adult I did not feel the were only here an hour. That person has spent most of need to go online and give a load of abuse to the Welsh their life learning that trade that you’re paying them rugby players for losing the game. I remember thinking because you haven’t got the skills to do it. Players do not that some of these players may never win a Grand Slam or just turn up and pass a ball around for 80 minutes and if they have, may never again Or may never play for their hope for the best. They’ve put a lot more in to that game country again. Imagine the disappointment for them and than sitting in front of a tv with a beer in hand as you and then certain people think it’s ok to go online and abuse I do. I think if you are one of these people who sits in front the same players who the week later when Wales won the of a computer all day and abuses people online you really 6 nations they would be celebrating. need to have a hard look at yourself. I don’t think I would get on a bus and tell the bus driver for the duration of the Racial abuse is something that’s been seen more and journey that they were the worst bus driver I have ever more online. So much so that Swansea City took a stand seen, nor go on Twitter to do the same thing. The sad a couple of weeks back by not posting anything online for thing is these same people will be asking Welsh players a week as a way of protest. I genuinely can’t understand for photos when they see them out and about and the mindset of those people who post abuse. The world wonder why they are not in the best of moods…… has changed with the internet and will continue to do so but grown adults thinking its ok to go online and give the abuse they do is unbelievable. I do not think many of

SA4 PEOPLE Andrew Gazzi

Have you always lived in Gorseinon? I was born in Gorseinon Hospital and I went to Gorseinon Infant & Junior Schools, and then Penyrheol Comprehensive. We were the first new year when Penyrheol Comprehensive school opened. I have a saying for you ; “Gorseinon born, Gorseinon bred, Andrew Gazzi will always be a red”. Have you ever fancied moving anywhere else or was Gorseinon always where you wanted to stay? I have always been a home bird; I have been very lucky to have travelled the world,to play and watch rugby but I am always very happy & glad to come back to Gorseinon because this where my Family,Church,Rugby club and all my friends are.

Are you still hoping after the pandemic to get back into it again next season? Being the President and helping the committee to run Gorseinon RFC perhaps my commitment will lay elsewhere. However it would be nice to play 1 or 2 games for Wales it is always said that the rugby club is the hub of the seconds if they need me for numbers. Its also becoming the community - do you think that is the case in Gorsei- much harder to sneak out of the house with my kit without non? my wife seeing me. Yes, it’s so important the rugby club, especially in these times of COVID-19 is the Hub of the community and we are hoping How strange has it been for you the last year, because that we can utilise the rugby club as a way of getting the since however long every Saturday you have been children back into sport (rugby),fitness and to become part watching rugby and probably having a couple of beers of the community again, an essential progression of the after, and for the last year obviously that has stopped? childrens development. It’s been a very, very strange year. The Gorseinon boys have all Have you always played for Gorseinion RFC? I have only played for Gorseinon at this level, however when playing first class, I played for Maesteg, Llanelli and SGIE, I played for Maesteg for 3 years, SGIE for 2 and had a couple of games down Llanelli before getting injured. So as a local side yes, I am very proud to say have only played for Gorseinon RFC. I don’t know how to put this delicately Andrew, but do you come across many people playing at your age still? No, it’s probably very stupid, when I played last year against Penclawdd and the the scrumhalf was 18, I could have been his grandfather! I am guessing you must have to keep pretty fit to be still playing: do you go for many runs and so on? What happened was my first employment after university was with Brisco Williams in Gorseinon for over 20 years and then I bought in to a business with my best mate called Diamond Holidays and after 10 years of trading, I lost the company & my best friend when the company went into administration. So it was a very hard time, going through depression and a breakdown but I used rugby and fitness to get out of that.I started training again at the age of 50 and have continued to do so ever since.I can recommend training as a way through this illness.

been talking about it,both the committee and players, can’t wait to get started again and get down the club and have a game, chat and a beer.Gorseinon RFC is a huge part of my life. Does it concern you at all that we might lose a generation of young players to Covid? I hope not, but as I said in another interview, we are looking to give the juniors free membership until at least next year, so they don’t have to pay membership, and hopefully this will encourage all the existing players to come back and new juniors to get more active into sport. Gorseinon RFC senior & junior committees are very progressive using rugby to get children into the sport of rugby, getting them active, creating lifelong friendships, and all being part of the Gorseinon rugby club family. Dan Biggar, Leigh Halfpenny, Eli Walker, Ross Moriarty and Sam Davies have all played for Gorseinon. They are all of similar ages did they all play together at the same time and did you see them coming through? Not all of them played together, Halfpenny and Dan Biggar played together in one side, Eli Walker another team with Ross and Sam playing for another team. Obviously, they contributed to the side massively because they were the best players on the pitch by far at the time.

FEBRUARY SPRING OFFER Can you see that when you have players like that coming through, I would imagine players like Biggar and Halfpenny would have really stood out? I wasn’t involved with the juniors when they were playing other coaches like Rob Steele,Rob Okelly( my brother in law) Jonathon Roberts ( another brother in law),Ian Murphy , Richard Davies coached them and they always have said these internationals had something different to the rest. I am now involved with the junior coaching, and you can definitely see players like Lee and Dan’s quality coming through. However todays rugby does not only require the X factor, dedication at a young age is hugely required. We have some lovely players now at 15, 16 and 17 years of age and a big part of their development is having the individual dedication to take it a step further .

What has been your best and worst memories for would like to play but it’s circumstances really. I am sure Leigh would love to play for Gors if he has the opportunity. Gorseinon in the rugby? The best as a player would be gaining promotion on two different occasions as captain in the old West Wales divisions. As a committee/Spectator this would be when most of the current side won the Division 2 West, gaining promotion to Division 1 West which they have been there for numerous years, a great achievement.

What’s your earliest rugby memory?

My worst would be when I coached the youth rugby to the Youth cup final at the Millenium Stadium. It was the first time Gorseinon youth had ever been to a cup final.( that day and our water boy then was Leigh Halfpenny), we lost in the final to a side that fielded 4 players that had not played for that side that year, brought in from outside their squad at the expense of the current players not playing. Not something Gorseinon Rfc would allow. It was a great achievement to get to the final and to play with all Gorseinon based players. And now at least half of the team that played that day are now playing for the firsts which is great.

I know you touched on mental health earlier on and it’s been a year now where people have not been able to play sport: how important do you think getting back in to sport with the physical and mental benefits that rugby can bring?

Leigh Halfpenny seems to be heavily involved at Gorseinon RFC: do you think he would like to finish his career playing for Gorseinon for a bit? He has always said, obviously depending on his professional career which I believe he still has a good few years left,he

My earliest rugby memory was the 1973 Barbarians game in Cardiff, and it was my first international that I went up to Cardiff to watch and obviously I saw the try by Gareth Edwards who was my hero at the time.

It’s something that is developing with rugby; there are more and more children getting involved and at Gorseinon RFC, some have issues, so we do need to look at that side of it. We are lucky to have persons involved in the club with the qualifications and time to get involved. Ladies like Hayley, Anne Marie and Andrea who put together courses for junior coaches to spot any issues with youngsters, and also psychologically preparing the older juniors for what it takes to be a professional and successful rugby players,it is becoming part of the club and the development. This is definitely forward thinking so hopefully Gorseinon RFC are developing children in a safe and professional way.

Search for Local Artist: update 01792 885184

We printed in the last magazine: A local resident has been in touch with the SA4 Magazine hoping to shed TREEthis SURGERY & TREE REPORTS some light on a painting she has owned for over 25 years. The resident who wishes to remain anonymous GROUNDS MAINTENANCE purchased the painting in Goreseinon and was told at the time that it was painted by a local artist. The ACCESS HIRE signature on the painting is below, it looks like it says ‘Wydam’ or ‘Mydam’ but assume that it could be ‘Wyndham’. Do you know who this artist is? Please help us solve this mystery for the local resident.

07950 382378 hello@thearbteam.co.uk

We had 2 responses, thanks to both! I think the artists name is Hydam,a similar painting sold for £97 at auction. If you type in Siglo Hydam in a search engine it will show you more paintings by him. Hope this helps. Gina

www.thearbteam.co.uk

this might/ might not help, but our house in Frampton Road is called Mydam Hill - could the artist have taken a pseudonym from the place? Also, we were told that 'Mydam' may be a corruption of 'Meidrim'. Gillian

DO YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC CAR? HAVE YOU EVER REPLACED YOUR GEARBOX OIL?

Most manufacturers now consider their automatic transmission fluid to be lifetime oil. Unfortunately, the oil still degrades over time and should be changed. Here at David Coe’s Garage we have a gearbox flushing machine which changes up to 98% of the oil in your transmission. Conventional draining and refilling can leave 70% of the total fluid inside the torque converter, valve body and cooler lines.

Gowerton Comprehensive School

To see the 6th form back in the common room or enjoying a game of football on the front lawn is wonderful. They work very hard in their lessons so it’s good to see them relaxing in their free lessons. Ms Preuss, Head of 6th Form. It’s better to see people in real life not on a screen. Daisy yr 10 It’s easier to learn in classrooms and have a consistent schedule. Ffion and Daisy yr 10 I’m glad to be back as I feel my learning is much better in a real life situation rather than online. Charlie yr 11

From the Headteacher’s desk It has been such a pleasure to have the whole school community returning to Gowerton after so many months of lockdown. From our youngest pupils in Year 7 to our young adults in 6th form, returning to school is giving a sense of normality to everyone. Some have found it more difficult than others and we as staff are there to offer support and try to eleviate some of the concerns. This month two of our long standing members of staff, Mr Howe and Ms Zoeftig are moving on to the next exciting part of their lives. The have dedicated 26years and 22 years respectively to Gowerton School. We thank them for all they have contributed to school life and pupils’ education during that time. We wish them all the very best for the future. This month we asked some of our pupils and staff why they were glad to return to school. Here are their responses: “It’s nice to be back in school as we have been in lockdown for such a long time.” Toby Year 7 I prefer to be back in school as the online learning was more difficult. Many pupils wouldn’t like to say in the online chat if they are having difficulties. It’s nice to be learning from our teachers and to see our friends. Antonio yr 12 Learning at home has distractions. It much better in a class setting and I’m glad to see my teachers and friends. Ben yr 10

Face to face conversations with teachers are much better. I also like seeing my friends. Amy yr 10 Arthur John yr 10 commented that he had missed the opportunity to do his GCSE practical subjects. Face to face learning is so much easier. Becky yr 12 Amy is pleased to return for her additional woodwind lessons as she felt the virtual lessons could never replace the help and support offered in a normal lesson. Amy yr 9 I was so pleased to be able to take this photo of the old oak tree on the front lawn at sunrise. We have such a lovely school environment but it is better with the pupils at school. Mr Hall-Richards, Resources Manager.

TIMELINE HISTORY 19th May is the national day of Brittany when Bretons celebrate the life of their patron, Saint Erwan (17 October 1253 – 19 May 1303), a parish priest who lived among the poor of Louannec. There are many Welsh towns twinned with towns in Brittany, including; Gorseinon with Ploërmel, Gowerton with La Gacilly, Carmarthen with Lesneven, Mumbles with Hennebont, Cardiff with Nantes. (Nantes was historically part of Brittany, but is now the capital of the Pays de la Loire région of northwestern France). Breton forces fought alongside Owain Glyndwr during his uprising against the rule of Henry IV. Henry Tudor spent 14 years in exile in Brittany prior to taking the throne of England from Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Henry was aided in his campaign with money and supplies from Francis II, Duke of Brittany. From the early 19th century, Breton Onion sellers (Sioni Winwns - Onion Johnnies) regularly traded in Britain. They were particularly prevalent in Wales as the Breton and Welsh languages are closely related and it was easier for them to communicate with Welsh speakers.

migrating Britons fleeing the Anglo-Saxon invaders in the 5th and 6th centuries, following the Roman withdrawal from Britain. The most prominent illustrations of the close relationship between Wales and Brittany are found in the biographies of the early Celtic saints, who journeyed along the western seaways between Brittany, Cornwall, Wales and Ireland spreading the Word. This period is often described as the ' Golden Age of Celtic Christianity. Welsh saints with Breton connections; Saint Samson, born 486, was the grandson of Meurig ap Tewdrig, King of Glamorgan and Gwent. He was educated by St Illtud at the Abbey of Llanilltud Fawr and is regarded as one of the foremost evangelizers of the era. He founded the monastery at Dol in Brittany. Saint Teilo, a friend of St David, who he helped establish an abbey at Mynyw (later St David). When the great yellow plague swept through Wales, Teilo took his community to the region of Cornouaille in Brittany. He later returned to Llandeilo Fawr and after the death of St. David, he became known as one of the most holy men in Wales.

The melody of the Breton National Anthem is an adaption of the Welsh anthem. It was adopted in 1903 as a symbol of Welsh-Breton friendship.

Saint Illtyd, born c.500 in Brittany, Legend has it that he began his career as a skilled warrior serving Arthur in the defence of Britain. Illtyd took up the monastic life and founded an abbey at Llanilltud Fawr (Llantwit Major), which became a centre of learning. At its peak, it reputedly had seven halls, over 400 houses and over 2000 students, which included St Patrick, Paul Aurelian, Taliesin, Gildas, Samson and St David. There are many churches dedicated to Illtyd in Wales and Brittany.

The area of modern-day Brittany was conquered by Julius Caesar in 56 BC and became known as Armorica. Welsh and Breton are both Brythonic languages with marked similarities. Breton being brought to Armorica by

Saint Cenydd, born a cripple in 525, the son of King Deroch of Brittany. He travelled to Wales, where St David cured him. However, Cenydd preferred to remain as God had created him and his disability was restored.

Contrary to the majority of our largely franchised competitors who offer a blanket approach to lawn care, we are offering a bespoke approach that takes into account factors such as soil type, drainage and aspect. At West Coast, we recognise how much impact a healthy lawn can bring to the overall appearance of your outdoor space. A lawn blighted with a carpet of invasive moss, weeds or bare patches can spoil an otherwise pristine garden, a lawn invaded by leatherjackets can look almost irreparable. PHARMACIES BEGIN GIV

Community pharmacies are joining the fight against Coronavirus by taking part in the Swansea Bay Covid-19 vaccination programme.

I’m sure the public will welcome being able to get their vaccine in such a convenient location.

Three Swansea pharmacies are now giving Covid vaccinations under a pilot scheme.

“The pilot scheme will initially run for four weeks and we hope it can be expanded to include other pharmacies in the coming weeks and months.”

The vaccines are given strictly by appointment only to invited local residents who are in the correct priority group and due for their first dose.

The three pilot pharmacies are Newbury Pharmacy in Mumbles, Well Pharmacy in High Street, Swansea, and Castle Pharmacy in Mumbles.

It’s all part of efforts to make getting a vaccine easier.

They have been vaccinating some people in group 6 – a very large group which includes those with underlying health conditions and unpaid carers.

Detailed planning has ensured there is enough Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for each pharmacy to initially schedule 100 appointments per week. But, unlike with flu, no walk-in vaccinations will be available – it’s strictly appointment only. The Covid vaccinations will be carried out by a pharmacist in a private room. “We’re very excited to see community pharmacies join the mass vaccination campaign to help make the vaccine more accessible for our patients,” said Dr Anjula Mehta, Group Medical Director for Primary Care, Community and Therapies Services. “Community pharmacies are a vital health resource and

The pharmacies will also be vaccinating those aged 49 and under. Those invited for their first dose in the pharmacy will return there for their second about 11 or 12 weeks afterwards. If the pilot goes well, more pharmacies could come on board later. Sam Ghafar, Regional Operations Manager for Wales (North and West) of Well Pharmacy, said: “Helping people stay well is in our DNA, and we are delighted to play our part in vaccinating people across Swansea.

VING COVID VACCINES

“Pharmacists are at the heart of community healthcare and have been working tirelessly over the last 12 months to support patients and ensure everyone has their medication as well as taking pressure off the NHS and GPs.” Huw Evans, of Newbury Pharmacy in Mumbles, said: “We are delighted to be participating in the early stages of the Covid-19 vaccination programme utilising community pharmacy locations. “We are very keen to play our part in ensuring the local community are protected and hopefully able to feel a little more confident about the future.” Eileen Davies, Superintendent Pharmacist at Castle Pharmacy, added: “We are very happy to be supporting the Mumbles community by providing this service. “Lives have already been saved by the Covid vaccination programme, and we are very excited to be part of this initiative.”

Already had your vaccination? That’s brilliant! If you’ve had your vaccination that’s great news. But remember -that you need to continue taking the usual precautions to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Why? It takes two to three weeks for your body to build protection following the vaccine. Also, the vaccine protects you but you may still be able to pass the virus on. And remember that some people have still not had the vaccination yet. • Continue keeping two metres apart from those you don’t live with. • Wear a face covering in enclosed public places. • Wash your hands often. How are we doing in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot? At the time of writing, well over a quarter of a million doses have been given, including over 200K first doses, and people in their 40s have been getting their jabs. At this point, we’re a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. We’re well on course to meet the target of vaccinating all adults by the end of July, although this is subject to vaccine supply.

I hadn’t heard of a Powers of Attorney until it was too late. A woman’s struggle with the Court of Protection shows the importance of acting now. A Cautionary tale

I hope this story is helpful to others, even those who’ve heard of a lasting power of attorney but so often put it into the back of their mind. Of course, you say you will get around to it, but not just yet. I had never heard of it when I needed it. Now it’s too late. My husband has dementia and had already lost his mental capacity, so could not deal with money or authorise anything legally binding. He has an aggressive type of dementia. In a couple of years, he changed from someone running a successful company to someone who was eventually detained under the Mental Health Act and is still in a secure hospital. We had maintained separate bank accounts throughout our married life and I had no access to his accounts — which was a bit tricky as I had given up working a while ago and wasn’t eligible for my occupational pension. I was able to pay for a few months’ care fees from my ‘slush fund’ and began the long haul of applying to the Court of Protection for an order to make decisions on my husband’s behalf. You apply to the Court via a series of forms that are supposedly easy enough for a layman to complete. However, I have to say that despite my professional experience and two degrees I found them impossible, and ended up having to engage legal help. The slush fund was looking pretty poor at this point and I also had to pay upfront for the Court to look at my application. I had to sell my car to raise more funds

Refused point blank

It took nearly a year for even an interim decision to come through, by which time I was at my financial wits’ end, still applying for jobs and borrowing from my family to keep the ship afloat. I had asked for the power to determine my husband’s health and welfare needs. It took nearly a year and I was refused point-blank. And my husband is still effectively a ward of the state today. The year running up to the court’s decision was a perfect storm. Coping with my husband’s ill health, navigating the complicated care system, finding a care home prepared to take him, then the home finding him too challenging (which they eventually did with one day’s notice on a bank holiday) and all the time dealing with the court and a precarious financial situation. Even now, I have to account to the Court of Protection, respond to its questions and pay it a fee to supervise me and read my reports. I’ve also had to take out a mandatory insurance policy in case I decide to run off with my husbands money. I understand why this rigour is required, but it’s hard when it relates to someone you love and to whom you have been married for more than 40 years. By contrast, creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is easy and costs a fraction of the alternative of dealing with the Courts of Protection. I wish we had acted earlier to save time, aggravation and money.

The total lunar eclipse falls in your close relationship zone on the 26th and this will give you a chance to sort out any long-term agreements you have made.

Scorpio – The total lunar eclipse on the 26th falls in your money zone and will give you the ability to set forth new plans for income and budgets. If you have been struggling with expenses up till now, a new opportunity comes your way. This will be a new start for you. The initiative in plans or projects to do with creativity will grab your full attention. This is something that means a lot to you personally, perhaps something you feel strongly about and you can get involved with is just around the corner.

Cancer – Mars is in your sign for the next few weeks and makes you extra assertive and good at taking action. This will give you a boost and help you stop second guessing yourself. The total lunar eclipse on the 26th falls in your daily work routines and gives you the nudge to set straight all your schedules, get yourself back onto a health and exercise plan. It will enable you to be practical about what needs doing and how to use time wisely with the ability to prioritize. New friendships and meetings are helpful.

Sagittarius – You get help and good communication from close partners, and you ll feel more connected and supported. The total lunar eclipse in your own sign on the 26th will be a turning point for you, as you can assess where you are going and weigh up projects and personal goals. You will be in the right frame of mind to make the right move and know instinctively who to trust with your plans. Mars in your joint finance zone makes you assertive and keen to make decisions. The next few weeks hold a lot of variety in work and leisure time.

Leo – Saturn transits your opposite house which is associated with close partnerships. This could manifest as restrictions or more responsibilities on your shoulders due to the relationships you have either in business or love. It may mean you need to change things a little and make them more concrete, so if you are having a relationship which has been up till now a relaxed verbal agreement, it may be time to make it legal and binding. The total lunar eclipse on the 26th falls in your creative zone which also covers romance, so this is a good time to tie for a decision.

Capricorn – This will be the right time for you to start a personal project. The new moon on the 11th in this part of your chart helps you to plan ahead. A new romance may be on the cards or something to do with family. It will be an exciting time for you that you want to whole heartedly get involved with. Mars in your opposite zone of close partnerships may bring you frustration and friction. If you need to clear the air then do so, using tact and diplomacy. Bring people on board and make your point of view very clear.

Aquarius – If you have neglected the details of a personal venture, now is the time to tie up loose ends. Saturn is in your sign so you look at things in a serious way. You find this aspect helpful if you need to deal with practicalities. Where you live, and improving on any work that needs to be done. The new moon on the 11th falls in your home zone. In your own life, and in your relationships, you wish to be upfront and honest with friends and family. This is a great time for clearing out clutter, either emotional or practical. Pisces – Emphasis on home and good communication will make you sociable. This is good as you have been trying to do too much single handed. With the understanding of those around you who care about you, things seem easier. Career objectives on the 26th with the total lunar eclipse falling in this part of your chart and give you a chance to clear your in-tray and make a new start. This is a case of out with the old and in with the new. A great chance to find the right colleagues and helpers for the work in hand. . Food Review @ Vesuvio A couple of weeks before Christmas Leanne and I took the kids with us to Vesuvio in Plasmarl. there did not seem any point In putting in the food review at the time as the restaurants and pubs were closed over Christmas. with things starting to open back we thought now would be a good time to write about our food at Vesuvio before Christmas. Usually, it would be just the two of us going to do a food review but obviously with everything going on we had two extra little ones as we had no babysitters.. We had both been before but not for quite a while, so we sat down and looked at the menus. Leanne went for the lobster tail to start and I chose the meatballs. The starters soon came and made for a lovely beginning to the meal. I am not someone who eats fish often, but I tried a bit of Leanne’s lobster tail and it was really tasty. She thought that the garlic, chillies and white wine sauce went well with it and made for a beautiful start to her meal. My meatballs were also full of flavour and came with a lovely tomato sauce. For mains, Alex went for Carbonara while James opted for Bolognaise, Leanne decided on Lasagne and just to avoid a full house of pasta dishes, I went for the fillet steak. My fillet steak came with sauté potatoes, vegetables and I chose a peppercorn sauce. This steak comes out uncooked on a plate on a hot tray and you can then cook it to your liking: which I found an appealing change. My main really did not disappoint: the steak had some lovely bits of garlic on the outside which melted in and went really well. I was really impressed with my main and it is something without doubt I would have again. The boys’ food went down well with both of them: as much food went in their mouth as was covered around the table always a good sign!. Leanne also really enjoyed her lasagne which she said was creamy and cheesy. I had remembered from the last time that I came to Vesuvio that their carbonara is especially good, so I had a little of Alex’s carbonara and it is a must - it’s absolutely stunning! Sadly, we couldn’t fit in a third course as we were all suitably stuffed! I would really recommend Vesuvio: for an Italian food lover, their pasta dishes are stunning and the steak I had was really good. The only problem is I think we will have to come back again just to try their pizzas…

THERE IS A BETTER TIME TO COME We have all had a difficult year with various restrictions in our lives; we haven’t been able to do the things we enjoy, see those we love, go on holiday or even pop in for a cuppa! It has been even tougher for people who have lost jobs, homes and even loved ones. Thankfully, there is light at the end of the tunnel now — many have been vaccinated and there is a roadmap out of lockdown back to near-normality. We hope that we will be able to go back to spend time with friends and family soon and do all the things we enjoyed before the pandemic. Everyone is talking about getting back to normal, but is this what you really want? If you are looking for more than the new normal why not try looking for a better future and join God’s family? In the Bible in Psalm 72 we are told about many of the blessings to come, here are a few: • One righteous judge to rule the whole earth • All those in need will be saved

• There will be food for all — even grain swaying on the mountain tops • All nations will be blessed • God’s glory will fill the whole earth

SPORT IN GOWERTON.

The village of Gowerton has a proud history for the playing of sport. The Gower Road cricket club, one of the oldest in South Wales, was founded in 1880 by Sir John Roper Wright, a local benefactor who was instrumental in the development of the Elba steelworks and thus, in bringing the process of steelmaking to the village.

Those mortgage repayments were a significant financial burden on the three clubs between the mid-80s and mid-90s. However, the vision and hard work of the committee members of all three clubs at that time, secured the ground that the residents of Gowerton benefit from today.

Sir John was also a founder member of the rugby club in 1884 and at that time he purchased the lease of a parcel of land that today forms the majority of the Athletic Ground that is now home for the Bowls, Cricket and Rugby clubs.

Gowerton Bowls Club: The Bowls club was formed in 1912 and initially played in the Welsh Private Greens league. In the 1980s, with membership on the rise they were able to form a second team and that side joined the Llanelli league.

Tennis was established at the ground in 1899 and the Bowls club was founded 13 years later. The playing of tennis at the ground has since lapsed but the other clubs continue to provide the sporting opportunities for all ages within the community that the recent pandemic has helped us to realise are so important to our physical and mental well-being.

The pavilion built in the early days of the club was starting to show its age by the late 1980s and the club demolished it and constructed the building that serves as their home today.

Three members of the club have achieved the distinction of representing Wales: S. Hurley (1931-2), W.R. Davies The closure of the steelworks in 1965 meant that the owners, (1936-46) and Cliff Williams (1979-82). Gowerton Cricket Club: With the onset of the spring, and the relaxation of the COVID restrictions the cricket club which has flourishing junior, senior and veteran’s sections is looking forward to getting out onto the pitch. The club has a rich tradition of achieving success on the field. Currently, they have 3 senior teams playing in the South Wales Cricket Association. The 1st XI play in the first division, a competition they have won on 4 previous occasions. It’s been in the cup competitions where they have enjoyed their most significant successes. SWCA league cup winners 12 times-twice as often as any other league club. Champions of Wales twice in 1993 and 2002 and most notably Haig National village cup winners at Lord’s in 1975. The village competition evoked great interest in Wales and when the team travelled to Lord’s, the iconic ‘home of cricket’ for the final in 1975, the majority of those in the crowd of 5,000 had made the journey from South Wales.

They also run All Stars sessions for 5-8 year olds and Dynamos sessions for boys and girls groups aged 9-11. Junior training restarts in the week beginning Monday 19th April. The Vets were started by Robert Evans around 30 years ago. Robert was a former player who captained the team on their first visit to Lord’s in 1973, he taught in the local comprehensive school for over 30 years and was a much-respected man in the community. He sadly died in 2010 but his legacy of sportsmanship, hard work and good humour lives on both in the village and the Athletic club. Vets games are an experience and it’s an enjoyment to see the players of yesteryear plying their skills, albeit a little more slowly. Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, we have all made huge sacrifices and many people have experienced personal loss and hardship. Frankly, it has been horrific for everyone. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone that has kept us going, especially our key workers and the NHS. I was recently offered my first Covid 19 vaccination and made my way down to the Swansea Bay MVC. The whole organisation of the Swansea Bay University Health Board vaccination roll out is highly impressive. The staff have been well briefed, are thorough in their work and extremely polite. We are extremely fortunate that Wales has been leading the way in the UK with our vaccination programme and that the public health situation continues to improve, thanks to everything we’re all doing to help control the virus. The Welsh Government has been successful in setting out a programme to re-open the economy and relax restrictions. The restrictions lifted on the 26th TONIA ANTONIAZZI MP April mean that outdoor hospitality is open. There are a limited number of licenced premises that will have the space to be open outdoors but those that can will be undoubtedly busy and I too, look forward to being able to meet up safely and be able to have some normality back in my life. Further restrictions will be lifted on May 3rd with gyms, leisure centres and fitness facilities re-opening and two households will be able to once again meet indoors. With the unlocking of restrictions comes personal responsibility. I know from meetings with our Neighbourhood Policing Teams in Swansea that they continue to deal with a large amount of anti-social behaviour and gatherings of people on beaches and in parks when the weather is nice. We have also seen a huge amount of litter being left because of these gatherings. People have been rightly angry on social media so please if you visit to a beauty spot, or just take the dog for a walk, take your rubbish home with you. Our communities across Swansea and Gower have worked hard to keep safe, so please be mindful of others, as and when restrictions ease. We love where we live, and this year has seen a greater appreciation of our neighbours, our public services and key workers, and our surroundings. When going out and about please give other people space, wear a mask unless exempt, wash your hands and enjoy yourselves safely.

PENLLERGAER VALLEY WOODS The Penllergare Trust is celebrating after receiving planning permission from the local authority to build a new visitor centre at its historic site. The new building will have a low carbon footprint and use green technology such as solar power and utilise the Trust’s Archimedes screw water pump to generate energy. It will be clad with timber shingles sourced from the woods and be located in a spot that will enhance the sensitive Grade II registered picturesque landscape of Penllergare Valley Woods. There will also be extra toilets in the new centre and there will be more parking spaces available for local visitors and tourists from farther afield. Work on the visitor centre – which will tell the incredible story of the Penllergare estate and its 19th Century owner John Dillwyn Llewelyn, will start soon. The Penllergare Trust has been managing and restoring the historic estate since 2000 and the hard work of its army of over 100 volunteers has helped attract up to 120,000 visitors annually to the site. Funding provided by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales – along with visitors’ donations, has helped pay for much of the infrastructure work, the new visitor centre and restoration of the walled gardens. With attractions including a waterfall and lakes, spring flowers and rhododendron, Penllergare Valley Woods has been an important and valued green space for local people during the pandemic. Paul Baker Chairman of the Penllergare Trust said " We're delighted that we've received the support of Swansea City Council for the latest phase in the development of Penllergare Valley Woods. We're indebted to the National Heritage Lottery Fund for its grant funding and of course all the people who play the National Lottery. Penllergare Valley Woods is a special place and we have a very special team of volunteers and staff who work tirelessly to improve our visitors' experiences. To date we have lacked a building in which to tell its amazing story and international importance. The new building will allow us to host visitors, schools and communities in an environmentally-friendly, pleasant atmosphere and enable them to learn about everything that Penllergare Valley Woods has to offer, its history,

ecology and biodiversity. An added bonus will be the incorporation of indoor seating within our extended coffee shop.” Andrew White, director of The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales said: “The granting of planning permission for the new visitor centre is a landmark moment for the Penllergare Trust during its restoration of this important heritage site. “This announcement will help ensure that Penllergare Valley Woods can flourish and be enjoyed by current and future generations and help encourage tourism to boost the economy of North Swansea.”
