MEETING DERBY'S MAN WHO CYCLED THE WORLD

LEIGH TIMMIS IS AN INCREDIBLY ENGAGING MAN. He's also a man who didn't mind diving deep into a discussion about depression, spirituality and the purpose of existence with a stranger he'd just met in a Derby bar. Given that introduction, it'll be of no surprise to you that I found Leigh to be about as open as it's possible for a human to be. Considering Leigh's desire to see the world and be present in it, it's somewhat ironic that he and I first began chatting about his roundthe-world cycle over Twitter and email. Nevertheless, I'd read of his adventures on some advert-filled local website (pfft), and his story virtually jumped out of my screen in order to grab my attention. Leigh had actually done what I'd idly fantasised about in the past; he'd got up, left his job, hopped on his bike and set off blindly into the metaphorical sunset.

HOW IT STARTED Having concluded our Twittering, Leigh and I met up to talk through his global travails at Friargate's favourite purveyor of craft beer, Suds & Soda. Suds always seems to get my interviewees chatting - must be something to do with the lemonade - but Leigh didn't exactly need any assistance to develop his story. This was a man who was clearly built to talk. As we began nattering, Leigh informed me that he left Derby in 2010 with no end date in mind for his ride. [CONTINUES OVERLEAF]

THE BIG INTERVIEW the city. On that point, Leigh had this to say: "Yeah, I went on that whole journey, the leaving was endless. It was very wandering, aimless, exciting - very Forest Gump. I was directed by the seasons, by people's suggestions... just whatever. I've come back to a changed world, I'm a changed person."

I FELT LIKE I'D NEARLY COMPLETED MY DREAM, AND WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER YOU'VE COMPLETED YOUR DREAM? RETURNING WAS HARD TO DO BUT IT'S OK NOW As the lemonade continued to flow at Suds, Leigh and I eventually moved on to talk about what's next for him, now that his grand seven year long meanders behind him.

LEIGH IN ACTION

Leigh had travelled before, living and working in Canada for some time, but before he set out on his momentous ride, he felt something different. Leigh explained to me: "As I grew up, I got good grades. I was pleasing my family, I was doing the right thing... but in the end, as I sat in an office, I realised I was ending up very unhappy; I thought "what am I doing?!"... instead of focusing on a goal, like "I'm gonna go around the world", my trip turned into a meandering journey. It became just for me. Those experiences I found were just for me, they were to be measured up against anything." For someone like Leigh - who is now making his way as an author and a speaker - to talk frankly about his adventure having no end goal, or obvious rationale, was refreshing to hear. There are plenty of examples of adventurers setting out with a vision to conquer great physical challenges, but the kind of tale Leigh's telling is far rarer. Leigh's story is a more contemplative one, as he continued to tell me over a cold beer lemonade: "I grew and experienced a lot on the journey. I was like a sponge. It wasn't about racing around the world, it was about learning a new language; eating new food and seeing things I hadn't seen before... Now I feel like it's time to wring the sponge."

THE LONG ROAD TO NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR Listening back to my interview with Leigh, something kept coming back up, time and time again. When we talked about Leigh's time on the road, we barely made mention of his bike, or indeed, of cycling. The bike was his tool to experience something more profound. What happened during the time that Leigh left Derby and when he came back changed him to the point that it's worth considering that Leigh's former self never really did return to 10 | IN DERBY | SEPTEMBER 17

Somewhat surprisingly, Leigh informed me that he's not completely against rooting himself in Derby again. He might have found himself on his travels, but there wasn't necessarily a place that spoke to him like home. When Leigh talks about Derby with me, there's a noticeable glint in his eye. Leigh said: "I'd like to invite people to Derby and be able to tell them stories about this place, as well as those I've seen on my travels. When people ask me "why have you come back to Derby"? Well, there's something about this place that's very special. There's music, there's art, there's sport - there's so much going on. What a place to belong to." Leigh is, as I've mentioned previously, writing a book about his journey - which has garnered some serious interest from two of the biggest publishers operating today. He's also speaking to big audiences regularly, and you'll be able to catch a TED X talk of his in the very near future. I think I've also convinced him to write a Travel column in this very magazine, but you'll all have to wait to see whether that happens by picking up our October issue. - IN

THE HEALTH & FITNESS INDUSTRY IS GROWING EVERY DAY, AND NUTRITION IS A HUGE PART OF THAT. Since I started Personal Training, I've had a lot of people ask me for meal/diet plans. This will get a straight-up no from me. A diet plan is something you would maybe stick to for a few weeks to get in that dress or to shed a few pounds for a wedding. I don't agree with it. Your nutrition should be something you want to change for good; not for the next few weeks and finish when you can't be bothered anymore. IT'S 80% DIET, 20% TRAINING.

I will always tell my clients the same. If you're eating below your maintenance calories, (the amount of calories you can eat to maintain your current weight), you will lose weight. If you eat above your maintenance calories, you will gain weight.

My calories will be reduced, but I won't restrict myself from eating anything. I've learnt from the past that restricting certain food groups does you no favours. Your brain will instantly tell you that you want that food, even if you actually don't! As soon as you reintroduce it in to your diet, you will most likely regain weight as your calories will be higher again. It just isn't sustainable. Working the foods you love in to your daily calories is much more beneficial. - IN

IT'S CALORIES IN VS CALORIES OUT. I'm no Nutritionist, but it's honestly not that hard. It's much simpler than some will make you believe.

You can't out-train bad nutrition. It doesn't matter how many times you workout a week... If your eating isn't on point, you can ruin all the hard work you're putting in at the gym or elsewhere.

However, I'm not going to advise you to go and smash a Big Mac because you've got 1000 calories left for the day. You could do, but you have to also think about the macro ratios within that food. How does the fat content compare to the protein content? Macro numbers are just as important as calorie numbers.

This year, I have added two more elements to my services that I felt had been missing:

The city is crying out for an inspiring new style and fashion identity, and I am thrilled to have been asked to be part of this new initiative.

During my stay in London, I entered a competition for Louis Vuitton and won! When a world-renowned name recognises your abilities you almost have to start believing in yourself! And so my journey in fashion really began.

From as young as I can recall, I have had an abiding interest in, passion for and - dare I say it - flair for fashion, but never really dreamed it could be my day job! But nothing ventured, nothing gained, so my first steps were to absorb as much knowledge as I could, and I enrolled at Leeds Art University to study fashion. I immersed myself in every possible aspect of this complex industry, from editorial styling, fashion design, tailoring and art direction, to fashion film. As demanding as my Uni studies were, I just couldn’t get enough of the industry, and spent my weekends in the last year of my course studying advanced styling techniques in London. It soon became clear that, even in such a glamorous business, there is no substitute for damned hard work and commitment! Even after graduating and after experiencing 18 | IN DERBY | SEPTEMBER 17

Now fully involved in the industry, it constantly puzzled me why it seemed so difficult to make the person in the street look as good in every day life as the models do in magazines. I could already testify to the power of good styling in making people feel good about themselves, and began to make it my mission to open clients’ eyes to the huge possibilities that were there for the taking. Talking with clients, it became clear that one of the biggest problems in respect of good styling is fear; fear of the unknown, fear of failing, fear of getting it wrong. And so much of this fear can be removed by helping people know where to start their search. So, after a while, when I relocated back to Derby, I felt the time was right to put my business where my beliefs were, and set up my

I have been styling people for many years now, and I knew there was a lack of good quality ‘forever’ pieces, so I travelled around sourcing fabrics and designed the concepts myself. And now I have a bespoke range of styles that ladies can choose from, and can have completely made-to-measure to their personal preference and fitting. Style is knowing who you are, and what you want to say. In the coming months I am hoping to inspire all IN magazine readers with up-todate trends and style references that can be applied to everyday life. WELCOME BACK DERBY FESTÉ DERBY FESTÉ WILL ARRIVE ON 29TH AND 30TH SEPTEMBER, TRANSFORMING DERBY INTO A PLAYGROUND WITH PERFORMANCES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO ENJOY. Derby Festé kicks off on Friday night as Bass’ Recreation ground is transformed into a ‘World of Circus’ with a twist of Festé and a sprinkling of magic. Enjoy the very first ‘Festé Food Village’ with street-food and drinks from around the world. Take in the beauty of the fire trail and encounter a carnival procession and circus acts along the way. The evening will build towards a show-stopping, daring and dangerous aerial performance by European company Gorilla Circus called ‘The Altitude Show’. Tickets for the ‘World of Circus’ are just £7 each and group bookings of 8 or more are just £5 each - bargain! Saturday’s entertainment is completely FREE where the streets will come to life from noon with performances for the whole family including live music, circus performances, dance, 20 | IN DERBY | SEPTEMBER 17

and comedy. The Saturday headline act for this year starts with a parade of colour winding through the Cathedral Quarter. Then dance the night away at the spectacular Garba celebration of light, colour and rhythm. The ‘Colour of Time’ procession, by Cie Artonik, will begin at 5pm winding its way through the streets to Cathedral Green – where only the brave will enter the explosion of colour! Then don’t miss the incredible spectacle of more than 100 dancers perform the Garba under a canopy of lanterns on the Market Place. You can join in or just enjoy the wonderful Night Market!
