FOLLOWING THE RECENT RE-BRANDING OF PIZZASTORM, IN MAGAZINE WAS KINDLY INVITED ALONG TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD TO OFFER. WITH NEON WALL SIGNS, EYE CATCHING DÉCOR AND QUIRKY SEATING, PIZZASTORM MADE AN INSTANT IMPRESSION ON US. Now going to a pizza restaurant and ordering a salad instead of a pizza just sounds crazy to me, however PizzaStorm have you covered with their Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza! Yes I know what you’re thinking, salad on a pizza – Weird! But I can assure you it was one of the most unusual yet tastiest pizza’s we have ever tried. Their white sauce and mozzarella created the perfect base before adding Regato, chargrilled chicken, baby spinach and rocket, red onion finishing with their Caesar dressing, it was exactly like having a Chicken Caesar Salad, just on a Sour

shout about! They were the perfect amount of garlic and we couldn’t eat them quick enough.

Additionally we decided to try the Create Your Own Pizza option. For a standard price you can create your own pizza adding as many toppings on as you like. If that doesn’t sounds like pizza heaven we don’t know what does.

After trying to finish all of our pizzas and sides, the thought of desert was becoming a struggle, but after seeing the waiter bring out the Nutella Calzone for someone else, we knew we had to order one. I am so glad we did as it was incredible! The Nutella oozed out against the crunchy calzone, creating the perfect desert to finish off the meal.

Starting with a plain 11” sour dough, we added the classic tomato sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese to create the perfect base. With a huge selection of toppings, we decided to go for mushrooms, courgette, chargrilled chicken, pepperoni and chorizo. Simply scrumptious. The whole process of creating your own pizza was so fun and simple, perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

IF THAT DOESN’T SOUNDS LIKE PIZZA HEAVEN WE DON’T KNOW WHAT DOES.

To compliment the pizzas, we decided to order two different sides: Garlic Ciabatta Breadbites and Potato Wedges. You can’t go wrong with potato wedges, they were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the centre, the perfect combination. The Garlic Ciabatta Breadbites however were something to

The next time you’re out and about in Nottingham City Centre, I would highly recommend PizzaStorm located on Milton Street as your new pizza stop to make ‘Your Pizza Your Way’.

ATTENDING AN EVENT?

Ask the organiser for the attendees list so that you can select those you want to meet and then search their Twitter tag in order to Tweet them prior to the event, saying ‘you’re looking forward to meeting them’- a great ice breaker when you finally do meet face to face.

FOLLOW ALL EVENTS Follow all events you plan to attend on their social media platforms- most common tend to be Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and in some cases Instagram and you can then ‘retweet’, ‘like’ and comment in the lead up to include yourself in the mix and let others know you plan to attend, which may then

SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES Always have a professional head-shot picture on your social media profiles and never use a selfie style shot or even worse no photo at all- people often think you are spam if they don’t see a picture of someone human! KEEP YOUR PROFILES PROFESSIONAL

And regularly updated, people buy people as we know, so remember to add a little about your interests/hobbies so people can attempt to find commonalities, which will in turn, help you build healthy and genuine business relationships. I’d like to finish with a quote from social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk, “When people are using their devises, its probable that almost half are networking on social media”, therefore if you’re not, you’re likely to get left behind, so keep up with your competitors and ensure you are in the mix when it comes to networking via social mediaGood luck!

WOMEN TODAY. OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL?

HOW BEAUTIFUL WOULD IT BE IF WE LIVED IN A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE CALLED ‘PREJUDICE’ BY ITS FIRST NAME, TAPPED IT ON THE SHOULDER, LOOKED INTO ITS EYES, ASSERTIVELY, WITHOUT SHAKING OR PAUSING, AND INSISTED, “YOU CANNOT LIVE HERE ANYMORE”. Women’s opportunities in Britain are admittedly better than 100 years ago but still unnecessarily limited, and this is due not only to the arrogance amongst those who suggest they’re ‘superior’, but the ingrained manifestation of gender inequality. Women deserve solidarity and the right to prosper with liberty, justice and happiness – but even now, as then, we are not able to speak our minds without some stigma. Modern working environments are thought by some to be increasingly ‘un-prejudiced’ but are, as we have seen recently, still gender-biased: society is still left faced with the issue of unequal pay between men and women. Worldwide, although Saudi Arabia have only just recently decreed that women are able to obtain their own driving licences, many places are left with young women bombarded with restrictions that leave them powerless. Being thought less of and not able to be proud or allowed to share the spectrum of your abilities is a waste. Women need to stay united with strength, resilience and the chance to continuously navigate this world for further opportunities. And there is a shift, a global shift. We are no longer tolerant of injustice or ignorance and we don’t want just empathy – we want to give this world the power to heal humanity of this equality drought. We will do it the right way, the smart way. So, stay vigilant and keep fighting for your rights. Our rights. Wave goodbye to Prejudice. How beautiful would that be?

10 | IN Nottingham | March 18

AS A YOUNG WOMAN, WE ARE CONSTANTLY SURROUNDED BY OTHERS’ IDEALS OF WHAT A WOMAN SHOULD BE. SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME WE HAVE BEEN THE ‘LESSER’ PEOPLE, PERHAPS EVEN A DIFFERENT SPECIES.

MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT SEXISM IN THE WEST IS A THING OF HISTORY. FACTS BEG TO DIFFER. ALTHOUGH THE MA JORITY OF SOCIETY AT LEAST PUT UP A FAÇADE OF EQUALITY, ONE ONLY NEEDS TO LOOK AT RECENT HEADLINES.

From Eve, who supposedly doomed all of mankind, to Emily Dickinson, who, on this very day threw herself in front of the King’s horse, only to be remembered for forgetting to make her husband his sandwich before her act of martyrdom. Through the years, all the influential examples of women have confused and angered many, earning us the reputation of being a sort of enigma, a mythical creature who, if given a voice, speaks only in riddles full of double meaning.

Clearly age-old misconceptions about gender persist. We have been living off the revolutionary changes that happened over 40 years ago such as the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 and the Divorce reforms of 1969. Momentum had stopped and, despite the obvious improvements, there are still many modern issues faced by women in the workplace and domestically.

The fact that all women are different has confused men for eons, especially those who tried to depict us through literature. From the Iliad to Twilight (written by a woman), women have been categorised, we are apparently too confusing to do any otherwise. Although in the last one hundred years we have seen improvement, building a Utopia where the opportunity to succeed is not based on the appearance of woman, instead is based on talent, is a difficult thing to aim for. However it is possible, plausible even. The ideal for me would be that people would show accurate depictions which would, in turn, bring about the revolution of gender equality that so many of us are seeking. Life opportunities have always been offered to males first: it is time for that to change. Ideally, I would like for all people to be considered for any opportunity based on skills and talents instead of gender and appearance. So, whether you see yourself (or are seen) as a nagging shrew, a selfless martyr or even just as yourself, we all need to work together to fight for our rights to equal opportunity.

The deficit of women in the highest-paid positions shows how, although there has been movements towards promoting equal pay for equal work, there are simply fewer women in the ‘top’ jobs. It’s not to say that there have not been advances in women’s prospects; STEM subject scholarships and wider awareness of feminism from the social media sphere like the ‘HeForShe’ movement counter centuries of imbalance. These campaigns spread awareness of the issues and the possible solutions, without which there would be no hope of gender parity in the future. The ongoing debate about intersectionality within feminism is also evidence of a thriving conversation surrounding such issues, so let’s keep this tide moving. Let’s look forward. Recent feminist movements, such as the ‘Time’s Up’ campaign and women’s marches, are so vital, just as they were a century ago: the quest for equality and the creation of fair opportunities for women, for all, is the thing for the future.

Thank you to Sehar Janjua, Esme Saya and Catrin Manktelow, from years 11, 12 and 13 at Nottingham Girls’ High School, for contributing to our education feature!

Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to the Theatre Royal Nottingham with one of their most popular and beloved productions, Matthew Bourne’s CINDERELLA.

The Nottingham International Microfilm Festival is one of the main highlights of the Nottingham Media Festival. If you are looking to advance your career in either Microfilm or VR, then Nottingham Jobs are running a series of career clinics.

A thrilling and evocative love story, set in London during the Second World War, which forms part of the company’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

The Fresh Creative Awards will be celebrating the Best of British, in Advertising, Design, Media, Experiential and Live Theatre and the VR Expo & Awards are running an exhibition, plenary panel sessions and a series of Jump Start Workshops for those looking to integrate VR into their business models.

Based on the real-life friendship of Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj, ‘Scott and Sid’ is a coming-ofage story of how two teenagers, growing up in a Yorkshire town, dared to take an unconventional path to make the impossible, possible. Scott is a shambolic dreamer obsessed with films, a quintessential troubled teen intent on carving out his own path in life.

MATTHEW BOURNE’S CINDERELLA Tuesday 6th March – Saturday 10th March 2018

Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairytale, has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. CINDERELLA will be performed in Surround Sound, designed by Paul Groothuis and featuring a specially commissioned recording played by a 60 piece orchestra.

12 | IN Nottingham | March 18

The International Drone Awards are also taking place looking at the use of drones outside of gaming and just for a little fun, is a Lego Legends competition inviting enthusiast to display their work in and around the Lace Market, which is home to the Festival.

Friday 9th March 2018

Sid, on the other hand, just wants to be liked. His upbringing has made him an awkward recluse, with no time for friends and no means of escape. When Scott arrives in town, Sid’s whole world is spun off its axis, as the pair embark on a journey of Dreamchasing, the personal code that they agree to live by. Fighting against the limits of their own imaginations, Scott and Sid test their friendship time and again, but they will stop at nothing to achieve their ultimate aim.

Manufactured lace had a momentous impact on Nottingham: helping to change a turbulent county town into a modern industrialised municipality.

Saturday 10th March – Sunday 11th March 2018

The Castle grounds are transformed into a medieval village encampment, located just outside the Sheriff of Nottingham’s stronghold of Nottingham Castle, complete with period cooking, traditional crafts, jesters, street theatre, music and puppet shows. Stroll around the market stalls and sample medieval delicacies such as roasted meats and ales. Try your hand at archery, watch combat demonstrations and enjoy a spectacular show of jousting knights and horseback sword fighting, as Robin faces off against the evil Sheriff of Nottingham - in his bid to steal from the rich to give to the poor.

Handmade Nottingham are returning to the beautiful Malt Cross Pub on St James’ Street in Nottingham City Centre, just a short walk from the Market Square, and next door to the Handmade Nottingham Shop. St James Street is fast becoming one of the best streets for independent shopping in Nottingham. Handmade Nottingham transforms the space for the Markets, filling the tables with stalls and decorating the building with beautiful handmade decorations especially for the market. Hello Sunshine will also be returning doing her live 10 minute portraits! So come along and buy your loved one an Easter gift from designer makers!

OPERA NORTH: MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Saturday 17th March – Sunday 18th March 2018

Within the middle decades of the nineteenth century, the development of this industry effected nearly every aspect of town life: economy, urban development, population, public institutions and even political ethos. In the space of just a few miles, it is possible to see the sheer scale and speed of this change. Local historian and graphic designer Chris Matthews will lead a guided walk, taking in not only the workshops, factories and warehouses, but also the streets, housing, parks and buildings transformed by the lace industry. One of the best-loved operas of all time, this is the tragic tale of innocent love crushed by betrayal. Cio-Cio San is a young Japanese woman who sacrifices everything to marry Pinkerton, the dashing American naval officer.

Set in 30 acres of tranquil parkland just beyond the Nottingham Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont Hall is perhaps Nottingham’s best kept secret. However it is famed for its magnificent spring gardens with magical displays of snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, aconites and hellebores. Over the past few years the family have also planted many specialist winter flowering shrubs so the gardens are awash with colour in early spring.

Cruelly discarded when he returns to America, Butterfly is driven to a final and dramatic act of despair.

With its exquisite set and costumes, this emotionally direct and beautiful production by Tim Albery, is devastating in its impact. Madama Butterfly features some of Puccini’s most famous music including ‘One Fine Day’ and the ‘Humming Chorus’.

French soprano Anne Sophie Duprels has won widespread praise in this production in the role of Cio-Cio San.

Beauty By Carly Swift

WEDDING BEAUTY WHEN IT COMES TO PLANNING YOUR WEDDING, SKINCARE AND MAKEUP IS USUALLY AT THE BACK OF YOUR MIND, THEN LEFT TO THE LAST MINUTE. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE PRIORITY, AFTER-ALL YOU WANT TO LOOK YOUR BEST IN YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS! So here is some advice in perfecting your skin care routine and choosing makeup, lets face it no one want a blemished, orange face on their big day! Whether you have a year, few months or weeks left until your big day – you still have time to nail your skincare routine. Think about the problems you have with your skin and what you want to achieve.

INVEST IN A SERUM I know I’ve said this many times before but these are a big deal! There are plenty on the market to suit all budgets! I recommend Vichy Aqualia Thermal Hydrating Face Serum. Compared to some other serums on the market, it’s very reasonable priced. This will last you ages too, as 1 pump goes a long way! It leaves your skin feeling fresh, hydrated and plumb – which is how you want your skin to feel on your big day!

14 | IN Nottingham | March 18

EYE CREAM Regardless of how many moisturisers or serums we use, the skin around your eyes need that extra care. You need a eye cream that targets dark circles and fine lines. Admittedly some eye creams are too heavy for the day time and under make up. So I recommend Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream. It’s formulated to help you achieve fresher, younger looking eyes by the morning, your eyes will thank you for it!

PREPARE If you plan on doing your own makeup on the day, then make sure you prepare! Practise the look you want at least a handful of times and make sure that you time yourself! You’ll want to know how much time to allocate when you’re getting ready and you don’t want to be rushing! Not confident enough in doing your own makeup? Then I would first see if you have a friend, who is really knowledgeable of makeup, good at applying it and would be willing to do your makeup. Or book a professional makeup artist, but make that decision sharpish as they booked up!

Make sure you do your research and have a least 2 trials with them, until you’re 100% happy. Please don’t be afraid of telling them what you do and don’t like of the look they done on you, after-all it’s your look and your big day!

LOOKS For inspiration of looks, create a mood board of snippets you find in magazines or online. Personally I prefer a natural look, with soft pinks for the eyes and for the lips; a pink-ish nude would be perfect Of course, go for a look that you’ll be comfortable with, just be conscious not to look like a total different person when walking down the isle otherwise, your other-half to be may be in for a shock.

ON THE DAY Do your skin care routine and prime before you get your hair done. By the time your hair has been styled your skin would have soaked up all the products and you’ll be able to get straight into the foundation and beyond! Remember to enjoy getting ready and take your time, after all the wedding can’t start without the beautiful bride!

WEDDING CAKE TRENDS YOUR WEDDING CAKE IS NO LONGER JUST A TASTY TREAT TO BE ENJOYED AT THE END OF THE DAY – THIS YEAR THE CAKE IS VITAL PART OF THE THEME! MORE AND MORE COUPLES ARE MAKING THEIR CAKES A TRUE CENTREPIECE TO THE WHOLE THEME,INCORPORATING ONE PARTICULAR ASPECT FROM THEIR DAY IN A MEMORABLE WAY WHETHER IT BE THE WEDDING DRESS, THE BRIDAL BOUQUET AND THE WEDDING STATIONERY ITSELF. MARBLE A mainstay of last year, marble isn’t going anywhere. A marble cake is perfect for the bride who wants a fresh take on a classic white cake, adding a flash of colour to the traditional approach. Marble works wonderfully with another strong trend for this year - metallics

MATCHING FAVOURS

LACE

Why stop at cake? This seems to be the attitude of a lot of couples (and I’m sure appreciative guests). Edible favours to match the cake seem set to be a favourite this year. Perfect for a classy little take away treat for guests, or even as an edible place card.

With lace dresses having a huge revival in recent years, thanks to a certain royal wedding, lace cakes have had a surge in popularity. Brides are opting for almost an edible version of their wedding dress, with intricate lace detailing on a classic white background. These cakes are then finished off with a classy pearl or bow detailing to truly capture the bridal gown.

SUGAR FLOWERS Possibly the biggest trend this year - gorgeous cakes beautifully adorned in flowers to match the wedding bouquets. However, due to the pesticides used on natural flowers, and their often inedible or even poisonous varieties, brides and grooms are looking to sugar flowers to help them out. The demand for high quality ultra-realistic sugar flowers has never been higher. Sugar flowers let you pick your perfect flower any time of the year – any colour, any type in any season!

METALS Gold, silver, copper, rose gold - you name it - if it shines it will be on wedding cakes this year. Some cakes are opting for fine classic detailing, others are going bold, with gold leaf or sequins. Using metals is a really effective and simple way to tie your cake into your wedding’s theme and colour scheme.

DESIGNING YOUR BESPOKE DRESS I HAVE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE BEEN DESIGNING AND CREATING BESPOKE WEDDING DRESSES FOR MY CLIENTS FOR 16 YEARS NOW WITH MY BUSINESS ETERNAL SPIRITS. WHEN I ESTABLISHED ETERNAL SPIRITS MY SPECIALISM WAS AS A CORSETIERE BUT DESIGNING BESPOKE BRIDAL GOWNS AND EVENING WEAR SOON FOLLOWED AND IT’S BEEN SO REWARDING TO BE PART OF CREATING A LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC FOR SO MANY BRIDES. Every bride’s dream dress is different and with each new bride is a fabulous new personality I get to know and spend time working with to create the perfect design. Incorporating lots of aspects to create the dress; from silhouette and fabric to detail and colour as well as taking into account the client’s personality and wedding theme. There are so many ‘ingredients’ involved in putting together the absolute perfect creation for each bride I work with and every recipe is always different and always exciting. 16 | IN Nottingham | March 18

WHY GET A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS?

Brides not only want to look like a goddess but they want to feel like one too, so having a dress that’s made to order is the way to get exactly what you want.

Whether its your first wedding or not there aren’t many times in a woman’s life where the perfect dress or outfit is so important.

It isn’t just about getting the perfect design it’s also about it being cut and made to fit you properly and perfectly. The making of a unique dress creates a story as part of your wedding and part of your family history as wedding dresses are often passed through generations as they hold such sentimental value. On many occasions I have been given old pieces of lace or a grandmothers wedding dress to use as part of the new dress and that can form a really special part of having something unique made. It’s an opportunity to have exactly what you want down to the last detail.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BESPOKE AND ‘OFF THE PEG’? There is nothing wrong with an off the peg dress, there are some beautiful ones out there and having a dress custom made isn’t for everyone. Many brides do indeed find their dream dress ready to go. But so many brides don’t and that’s where bespoke is your answer. But also having a dress made for you means you are investing in the local economy, local skills and small independent businesses and you get exactly what you want too.

Off the peg dresses have several profit layers attached and you can’t guarantee it will have been ethically manufactured and of course it won’t be unique. A bespoke wedding dress doesn’t just have to mean big budgets, often designers like myself take a clients budget into account when looking at designs and fabrics.

HOW LONG DOES A BESPOKE DRESS TAKE TO MAKE? I’ve had clients come to me two years before their wedding, I have also had clients come to me a few months before. 6 months to a year is a good time as its planning in all the fittings but often it can be quite a flexible process because its all happening locally. Many dress shops instil fear into brides if they don’t order their dress 12 months before the day and its often because it takes months to have the dresses shipped in from the Far East because they will build up their orders to get one big shipment over. So these crazy time frames on dresses have come from that.

HOW DO I WEAR MY DRESS AGAIN? Wedding dresses do tend to be a lot of money for one wear, but if you box clever with your dress you could wear it again. If your dress is made of silk it can be dyed a different colour and made into a cocktail dress. Having a two piece corset and skirt means you can keep wearing the corset for nights out or anniversaries.

It may be that you don’t go for a traditional colour wedding dress and then you have something that could work as evening wear for future events. Or if you have children your dress may become christening gowns or upcycled a few decades later for another family wedding dress. There are lots of possibilities if you do want more use out of it and often your wedding dress maker can remodel it for you after the big day.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER IF I HAVE A DRESS MADE? I have clients who come with clear ideas of what they want and others who come with no idea and we always get their with the perfect design one way or another. Some advice to brides when going along to fittings: take suitable underwear, always wear the same bra and think early on about the bra you may wear on the day under your dress if it isn’t boned. Also take shoes a similar heel height to the ones you will wear on the day and, as you get your accessories, take along those along too. This will help your dress designer no end. Finally, have fun with it! This should be a fun process and not stressful.

PLANNING YOUR BIG DAY PLANNING YOUR WEDDING DAY CAN BE REALLY DAUNTING, BUT DON’T WORRY, IN MAGAZINE GOT IN TOUCH WITH THE LOVELY CAROLINE FROM THE WEDDING ALCHEMIST! WE ASKED HER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HER EXPERIENCE WITH HER CLIENTS, ALONG WITH ADVICE! WHAT WAS THE MOST UNIQUE WEDDING YOU EVER PLANNED? I have styled some interesting weddings but I have also provided bespoke elements for weddings also. The most unusual of these so far was black skull table plans. These were great fun to make and the client made them look awesome. They got married in a zoo and the venue looked both classy and quirky with a black and white theme with some touches of macabre it was great.

18 | IN Nottingham | March 18

WHY DID YOU GET INTO THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF IT? I would think like most people, by doing my own. I am a qualified interior architect and designer and I love everything about making spaces beautiful. I also love making and creating things and after trying my hand at everything from flowers to decor for my own wedding. I spent some time making fabric flowers but really thinking about what I love I realised styling is what I do best!

I loved doing my own wedding but it was a stressful process. Having to deal with everything on the day meant I did not have time to relax on the day and share a moment and a glass of fizz with my family and friends. I realise this is something I could do to take the stress out of others planning their big day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF PLANNING A WEDDING? Seeing the finished product and knowing that everything is as it should be ready for the couple and their guests to enter and have a great time.

I love all elements of the process but seeing all the hard work result in a beautiful space and a great wedding day is the best feeling. I am also a massive organiser so planning things is fun for me (sad I know!).

WHAT’S THE COST OF THE AVERAGE WEDDING YOU PLAN AND DO YOUR CLIENTS STICK TO THEIR BUDGET? This can vary massively. There is a bit of a misconception that styling is expensive but because I also offer a huge range of hire elements sometimes it can work out cheaper than doing everything yourself! For me, prices for styling and hire for certain items start from £25 per table and can be customised for a range of budgets. The best thing is that I can control the budget elements and purchase on the clients behalf.

They have access to the spreadsheet to see how the process is going at any time. Using trade discounts and inside know how I make sure the client gets the most out of their budget.

WHAT IS THE 2018 TREND FOR WEDDINGS? I tend to work more with people who don’t follow trends. I would say that more than a trend the new ethos that is becoming ever more popular is to do what you want! People are becoming more confident to make their wedding unique to them and to only include the elements and traditions they feel comfortable with. From unicorns, superhero’s, environmentally conscious, festival inspired, whatever they want, they can have and that is where I come in. I specialise in anything that is a little bit more unique and I can source or can create elements by hand and work with a range of styles to really represent my clients personality and requirements.

3 TOP TIPS ON STARTING TO PLAN A WEDDING… 1. Be true to who you are as a couple and what you want for your wedding, don’t be pressured by outside influences. 2. Don’t try to do everything yourself, pick the

few small things that matter most to you and give those your all.

3. Make sure to give yourself time on the day to

‘be in the moment’ and let others take the weight off your shoulders.

BEST MAN SPEECH EVEN BEAR GRYLLS RECKONS A BEST MAN SPEECH IS ONE OF THE HARDEST THINGS A BLOKE CAN COME UP AGAINST. YES, A FELLA WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED ROUND THE BRITISH ISLES ON A JET SKI AND DRINKS HIS OWN WEE, THINKS WEDDING SPEECHES ARE DIFFICULT. And despite the plethora of online templates and advice, delivering a best man speech is not getting any easier. A decade ago you could wing it. You could Google some gags and expect granny hadn’t heard them before. You could roll out the Powerpoint and embarrass the groom with some childhood photos and guests would think you’d made an effort. These days, not so much. The best man speech is still the most eagerly awaited but they’re often meet with good-natured groans rather than genuine laughter. They’ve become a caricature, with the traditional characteristics exaggerated to grotesque effect. Seriously, that line about the honeymoon and the groom ‘going to Bagnor for two weeks’. Or the ‘humorous’ fake telegram from the football team saying they found the groom useless in most positions but wish the bride good luck. Cringe. Cheesy gags and meaningless one-liners is not what a best man speech is meant to be. So here’s Speechy’s guide to writing a speech fit for a wedding in 2018. Take note comrade.

HUMOUR If you can take your jokes and use them in a speech about another groom, then you’re doing something wrong. Yes, we’ll allow you a few one-liners to break the ice but other than that, you’re on your own. Certainly take inspiration from other best man speeches, but only the good ones. Check out how others have taken the personality of their mate and used that as the basis of their humour. As Homer Simpson so sagely says ‘It’s funny because it’s true’. 20 | IN Nottingham | March 18

Start thinking about the things that make the groom unique. Everyone’s a nut-job, so what are the traits that his friends and family will recognise as truly ‘him’. Ask yourself lots of questions - what’s his worst habit (wearing skinny jeans), what’s his guilty pleasure (Dire Straits), what might he love more than his bride (Abduls kebabs). You get the idea. Once you have good content to play with, the comedy should flow. Don’t be scared to take the mick, it’s how British blokes show we care. Do, however, be scared of mentioning exes, stag do tales, in jokes and anything crude (innuendo’s fine, dirty isn’t). Also don’t tell any stories that might mean your mate needs to apologise to his wife.

FIND A THEME This is how your speech goes into the Premier League. Rather than just a trail of anecdotes, think of a way to theme your speech and tie everything together. This way you’ll capture the audience and no one will be checking their Whatsapp under the table. So how do you think of your theme? Think about the groom’s personality traits. For example: •Is he a pseudo-intellectual? Use quotes from great thinkers throughout history to contrast with your mate. •Is he a bit of a geezer? Present the bride with an insider’s guide to understanding how his blokebrain works. •Is he a football fan? Give a post-match analysis on his courtship with the bride and predict how well he’ll score as a husband The theme doesn’t need to be overly clever to work.

It should reflect the sort of girl she is – even if it is a feisty Pinot-fiend with an adult-addiction to Monster Munch!

PROVE, DON’T TELL Cut the clichés that most best men fall victim to. When it comes to ‘the nice bit’, rather than use adjectives, make sure you provide the evidence. Don’t just say ‘he’s been there for you’, explain that he picked you up from the Hogs Head at 2am when every taxi refused to take you home. Tell everyone how he helped you get to grips with pensions and confess that you still owe him fifty quid. Highlight the real reasons he’s a top bloke and your speech will sound refreshing.

PROPS Don’t bother. Most props just feel tired these days. Write a good speech and you won’t need them. One bit of kit you might need is a microphone. Check the groom has hired one if the acoustics of the venue require it. So many speeches are ruined simply because people can’t heard them.

VIDEOS It’s a total cop out from a delivery point of view but if you’ve got the skills and resources to invest in creating a cool video, then we’re all for it. Reconstruct moments from your past exploits together, visit the seminal locations from your teenage years, interview past teachers or ‘witnesses’ to bad behaviour. There’s lots of good best man videos online but remember, like the traditional speech, less is often more. Even with a kickass soundtrack, you still want a duration well under ten minutes - though, in reality, that would take A LOT of filming! We hope this advice helps you nail it.

BIG UP THE BRIDE In 2018 the bride needs to be more than an afterthought and you need to say more than she’s ‘made your mate happy’ and ‘looks beautiful today’. If you don’t know her well, then make an effort to do some digging. Find out about her and reflect that in your tribute to her. Don’t feel you need to be overly gushing or pretend she’s a perfect princess. A good tribute can still be affectionately humorous.

Notts TV

LOVE NOTTINGHAM, LOVE NOTTS TV LAUNCHING IN 2014, NOTTS TV HAS BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE LOCAL MEDIA LANDSCAPE – CONSIDERED AN UNUSUAL AND BOLD PART OF THE FURNITURE, LIKE THEIR BLUE DUCK-SHAPED ARMCHAIR MANY PEOPLE SOON GREW TO LOVE.

we’re about and why our slogan is ‘Championing Notts’. We’re here to celebrate the city in a fun and informative way.”

Broadcasting on Freeview channel 7, and Virgin 159, last year was full of stand-out moments for the channel. Its flagship daily live programme, Notts Tonight, was relaunched and moved to a new studio at the Antenna building on Beck Street in the city.

“We’ve followed Steve’s career for the last two years,” Iain added.

In November the channel ceased broadcasting on Sky in favour of appearing on TVPlayer – a free live online TV streaming service available as an app on mobile phones, tablets, and TV sticks. This allowed them to invest in new programmes, including local history show Rediscovering Notts and a new series of music magazine Noise Floor.

Besides broadcasting the fight live on Facebook, the channel also produced a documentary on Steve, The World’s Oldest Boxer: The Final Bell.

December was the defining moment as the channel won its first two Midlands Royal Television Society awards, taking its record since launching to 15 nominations and two wins – among the best across the 34 channels in the UK’s local TV network. “Our biggest and strongest benefit to our audience is that we’re still independent – we’re not owned by a big national corporation or media conglomerate,” says channel presenter and head of creative Iain Chambers. “We’re still run and owned entirely by people who live in, work in and love Nottingham. That’s what

The channel is supported by Confetti Media Group at Nottingham Trent University. One standout moment for Iain in 2017 came in July, when Notts TV covered the final fight of 61-year-old Steve Ward, the Mansfield boxer who holds the world record for being the world’s oldest active professional fighter. He stepped into the ring for the last time in Mansfield, performing bravely in a loss to German Andreas Sidon, 54.

“So to see the culmination of more than 50 years of a local man’s sporting life, was really special. It was a great local story with national interest, and a really proud moment.”

This year already sees the channel planning a refresh of Notts Tonight, more episodes of Rediscovering Notts, and is promising even

bigger guests and shows on its regular football programme Team Talk and sport magazine Sports Week. More entirely new programmes are expected later in the year and there will be more digital innovations for the 50,000 people following Notts TV across social media. “We want to carry on covering ground that no-one has ever done before, doing it day in and day out, exclusively for local people in Nottinghamshire,” said Iain. “We’ll continue to be a platform for emerging talent, from student journalists to budding filmmakers. “And if you’re one of the few people who have still not switched us on, come and see a fresh approach to TV which covers news, sport, local interest and conversation relevant to Nottinghamshire life.”

Casadeco - EFFECT Collection

Casadeco - PANAMA Collection transformation, why not enrol the talents of an interior design service? Creating a completely bespoke package tailored to you and your fiancé. That way you stay in control and can prioritise your preferences. Let’s face it, everyone is looking for that unique feel and if you’re going ‘to have and to hold from this day forward’ you want to make sure you get it right! My advice is always about the planning as I explained in the February issue. But also, you need to consider where and what your budget should be spent on. I always feel a beautiful pair of made to measure curtains create such an impact and exude a luxurious feel into any space whatever the concept (traditional, contemporary, minimalistic) the curtains can be the show stopper if designed well.

The design in the fabric in these floor to ceiling curtains is stitched in metallic thread which will create real movement when the light catches. A really nice addition to a pair of curtains is a creative trimming and again, this crystal edging will catch the light and make your curtains unique and interesting. No matter what you’re thinking of introducing into your home, look around you for inspiration. Right now, Spring starts to offer up a wealth of colour and you will find this reflected in some of this season’s new fabric, wallpaper and paint ranges. Don’t be afraid to be a little bold with colour and prints – experimenting is the fun part of designing a new room! I love the feature wall in this conservatory. It’s a really eye-catching statement

without being too dominating for the room. If colour is your ‘thing’ then watch out for next month’s issue as I will be focusing on colours, their meaning and psychology, and how to work the different colour theories into your home. So whether you opt for a contrasting or complimentary scheme, or decide to make a statement with a monochromatic palette, I’ll offer a little insight into how to approach it. Until then, for better or worse, see you next month!

COLON HYDROTHERAPY

the Hyd ro n o l o od C herwo S ( d r o f e t St a f By Ja n AS A WESTERN SOCIETY WE ARE STARTING TO REALISE HOW IMPORTANT THE GUT REALLY IS, WE ARE WHAT OUR GUT IS. The bowel has a big part to play in keeping us healthy and around 80 % of our immunity is from our gut. It is linked to all areas of our body, when it’s working well it is linked to controlling our weight. It can also influence our mood and atributes to general wellness. The gut is as important as our brains and heart, yet as a nation we may be still too embarrassed to ask vital questions about it. The Gut microbiome or our individual gut plan of good “gut flora” or bacteria, as we commonly know it as, play a key part in obesity, allergies and depression. With the ever increasing incidence of gastrointestinal diseases and symptoms soaring in the western world today, such as diverticulitis, colitis, constipation to name but a few, I see clients who come to me for alternatives. They are sometimes at their wits end and feel conventional medicine hasn’t worked for them.

put people back on right track to good intestinal health. Not only do I provide a consultation and the treatment, if we need to go further in our investigations, I am able to provide comprehensive further testing. Colon hydrotherapy is an ancient therapy and practised long before conventional medicine. In the western society Colon hydrotherapy is becoming more widely known and more accessible to people as they become more interested in their health in general, in particular intestinal health. Celebritries have it regularly to keep them healthy, Princess Diana was said to attribute her treatments to her clear complexion.

Many clients visit me, to seek relief from their constipation, IBS or just want a wellness cleanse. I also provide various Colon cleanses during treatment such as liver or kidney cleanse and even parasite cleanses for people who may have contracted parasite infestations, to help the body detoxify.

That’s why at my clinic everyone is an individual to me, I take time in my consultation to provide for the individual person. I am happy to provide after care and answer any bowel problem questions after treatment, often people go off track and just need some advice.

Given that I am medically trained and knowledgeable of the field, I try to keep my prices reasonable, so it is more affordable to everyone. As often more than one treatment may be needed if the bowel is very congested.

If this continues we get constipated which in turn could potentially lead to something more serious. So take that plunge and phone me today, I am happy to answer any of your questions! Travel By Leo Ford (Just Journey)

INDIAN OCEAN TROPICAL BLUE SEAS, BEAUTIFUL WHITE SAND BEACHES AND HOT WEATHER ARE BEACONING YOU FROM THE INDIAN OCEAN . These clusters of paradise islands include many but the most visited are The Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius and have been attracting honeymooners and those seeking heaven on earth for many a year. Here at Just Journey we believe that developing the trip by combining a second destination can give

your holiday more depth and substance and most importantly make the trip so much more memorable. With Emirates flying from Birmingham, it couldn’t be easier to create these multi-centre holidays and to include the unique city of Dubai. This desert city has something for everyone; have supper in the world’s highest restaurant, feel the adrenaline as you bounce through the dunes in a 4x4, or experience the souks (markets) and haggle for gold trinkets and souvenirs. For those looking for more culture, the island of Sri Lanka is a great choice. Great beaches, history, food and wildlife are all on the agenda in this wonderful destination. Depending on how much or little time you can afford we can make something special for you.

Sri Lanka’s Golden Triangle is a perfect region for explorers. The ruined ancient capital of Anuradhapura with its elaborate palaces, massive monasteries and medieval ruins make for some excellent exploring and photography opportunities. Climb the historical spectacular rock citadel of Sigiriya, perhaps Sri Lanka’s single most extraordinary sight to name just a couple. After all this excitement, sit back and enjoy a cup of the finest tea from your balcony, whilst you enjoy the view of the sun setting over the very tea plantation your cup was grown. Now the Indian Ocean calls, from the tiny lagoon islands in the Maldives, the luxury resorts in the Seychelles to the pristine beaches of Mauritius. Enjoy all the luxury and indulgence you can handle, you deserve it! More information at justjourney.co.uk

HAWKCHURCH JANUARY AND FEBRUARY HAVE TO BE THE MOST DULL AND LINGERING MONTHS IN THE YEAR, THE GLITZ AND FESTIVITIES OF CHRISTMAS ARE A DISTANT MEMORY AND IN IT’S PLACE IS AN EMPTY CALENDAR AND A STEADY OVERDRAFT BILL INSTEAD.

Now, we knew that this lodge would have to step up a notch to out do our sweet little hut on the beach… and boy, did it.

This year me and the other half decided to get banish the new year blues and book a stay-cation in our favourite luxury UK lodge company, Darwin Escapes.

This was my second Darwin Escapes holiday and I’m already looking into my third next year. Prices start from £225 for a short break in Hawkchurch, so book yourself a getaway! You deserve it!

Avid readers will know that last year we travelled to the candy coloured, oh-so-instagramable, Beach Cove in Ilfracombe and absolutely loved the hot tub relaxation that ensued. This year we travelled to the East of Devon to Axminster and stayed at the wooden lodges in Hawkchurch Resort and Spa.

By Kim C h a n t le

r ( B lo g g e

r)

Set in the rolling countryside, this super luxurious lodge was beautifully decorated, had a huge bed, hot tub submerged into the private deck and a freestanding bath to boot. There’s no much to do in the area, but that was the point – this was a relaxation holiday where we were forced to completely chill out. We did venture out during the day to seaside towns, quirky high street shops and National Trust properties, before heading back to the hydro pool and a relaxing drink in the Beeches restaurant on site. It was bliss.
