What’s new

MOWGLI

Mowgli is about how Indians eat at home and on their streets, pared back and unplugged. She was born to feed the raw need Indians have for Tiffins full of fresh bright intense flavour.

Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience. It is about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices.

The Mowgli experience is about a fresh take on Indian food. It is a million miles away from the curry house experience. Mowgli dishes follow the Hindu tradition of garlic and onion free dishes for lunch. This is how Indians eat in the privacy of their home kitchens and favourite lunchtime street stalls.

Mowgli is a new face of Indian food and at its heart is the brisk freshness of Indian food unplugged. Founder and CEO Nisha Katona opened her first Mowgli on Bold Street in Liverpool in 2014 when she was still working full time as a Barrister. The brand expanded quickly and now operates two sites in Liverpool, and one in Manchester, Birmingham, and Oxford. Mowgli is set to open its first Nottingham site in the foodie fantastic Hockley area in July.

THE ATRIUM BAR AND KITCHEN

Having run the Harley Café at Welbeck for the past 15 years, it was time to branch out and find another adventure. They searched all over Nottingham for the right fixer upper – one to put our mark on, and when they found the old Natwest Bank in Radcliffe on Trent, and the light flooding in from the giant atrium.

The amazing atrium floods the entire front section with gorgeous light. They’ve not stripped the place out completely, some of the great features like the walk in vault, have remained, which will be their private dining area! It was important to find a community that they could be part of.

The people of Radcliffe have shown such interest and support over the past few months of renovations – and they've found some great local people to join our team. The menu comprises of everything from scones to cakes, salads to soups, tarts to tagines, flatbreads to falafels. Everything from the jam to the burger is homemade, on site. The Atrium is licenced, and will be offering unusual wines, local beers and own range of cocktails. They hope to be open at the end of June 2018.

EDEN HALL SPA ARE YOU OVERDUE A LITTLE ME-TIME? I THINK WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF GETTING TRAPPED INTO THE BUILD-UP OF EVERYDAY LIFE AND EDEN HALL SPA ARE HERE TO HELP YOU RECONNECT BACK WITH YOURSELF. With exceptional spa facilities, luxurious treatments and heavenly food, Eden Hall Spa provide you the ultimate escape destination. Leave your worries and tension at the door as you enter their tranquil world. The relaxing experience begins as you enter through the gates. Words cannot describe the pure beauty behind the architecture and grounds of Eden Hall Spa. It’s completely breath-taking.

6 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

As soon as you step foot inside, you are instantly taken away from the outside world and brought into a tranquil place where time, worries and stress are no longer a priority. Your me-time starts now. Offering a variety of experiences, Eden Hall Spa pride themselves in well-being which is enhanced through relaxation and enjoyment. If they had a mantra it would be ‘health through happiness’, which they certainly support through their beautiful spa facilities as well as their fully equipped gymnasium and fitness classes. After checking in at reception we headed through to the changing rooms where we got into our swimming costumes and robes and went through into the superlative spa facilities. Here at Eden Hall Spa you have the options to enjoy their thermal spa suites which include: saunarium, herbal caldarium, sauna, rose steam room, salt inhalation room and specialist showers and body jets. Along with these, you can indulge in their 25-meter salt-water vitality pool which includes two spa pools within. Outside they have

two hot tubes which lead onto the beautiful gardens. Finally, if you fancy somewhere just to sit down and relax they have their slumber lounge, conservatory and roof top terrace. Now how amazing does that sound? During our visit, there were a few of the facilities that stood out to us. The first room we entered was their herbal caldarium room which was incredible. The herbal aromas against the subtle heat, instantly relaxes all your muscles and calms your breathing, creating a state of complete relaxation. Moving into their conservatory and roof top terrace, we decided it was time to have a warm drink and a toasted tea cake. As the sunshine beamed down, we enjoyed some beautiful fresh air whilst looking over the gardens. After this we decided to wander down to their slumber lounge. Wow! Here you are surrounded with cosy beds, beautiful relaxing music and aromas which ease you into utter relaxation. So much so we ended up taking 10 minutes as we fell asleep.

It was now time to wake up and head for our three course lunch in their beautiful restaurant. Eden Hall Spa believe food is one of life’s greatest pleasures and they certainly know how to indulge you with great food. With this in mind, we started with their Roasted Tomato Soup and Smocked Fresh Mackerel. They’ve taken a basic traditional soup dish and created something that was so much more. The ingredients combined created a beautiful homely and comforting dish. Their smoked mackerel dish was unbelievably fresh and so full of flavour. So far, we were very impressed. Onto our mains, we chose Marinated Pork Fillets and Roasted Chicken Thighs.

The pork was so tender and juicy it melted in your mouth. Paired with their roasted vegetables and spinach puree, it completed the dish. The chicken was incredibly succulent and was served in a creamy white bean and smoked pancetta cassoulet sauce. We couldn’t wait to indulge into our deserts as we ordered the Apple Tart Tatin and Chocolate Cheesecake. One word, delicious! After our incredible lunch it was time for us to indulge in our treatments. With a wide variety of treatments available by highly qualified therapists, there’s something for everyone.

During our visit we decided to have the Indian Head Massage and the Pro-Definition Lift and Contour Facial. The entire experience of both treatments was incredible, they left us feeling the most relaxed we’ve felt in a long time. Our entire bodies were left feeling light and tingly as if we were floating. By now our experience at Eden Hall Spa was coming to an end. After having the most amazing relaxing day, we were feeling like new people. So, when you want to escape the build-up of everyday life to restore, relax and rejuvenate yourself, head down to Eden Hall Spa located just off the A46 between Nottingham and Newark. Go treat yourself to some much needed me-time!

Business

10 STEPS TO SUCCESS & LONGEVITY IN BUSINESS

By Fiona Duncan-Steer

AS RSVIP BUSINESS NETWORKING AGENCY CELEBRATE THEIR TENTH ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH, FOUNDER FIONA DUNCAN-STEER SHARES HER VIEWS ON WHAT IT TAKES TO REACH SUCH AN IMPRESSIVE MILESTONE IN BUSINESS, REACHING THE SUCCESS MANY HOPE FOR.

PASSION

BALANCE

EMBRACE CHANGE

Without it, what exactly are you doing it for, one of the main advantages of owning and running your own business is to explore, thrive and enjoy your chosen vocation in the industry you want to be in.

Work /life balance is so important! We live in a society where it's the trend to be so damn busy and is seen as a badge of honour if you haven't managed to find the time for a holiday this year.

So passion should naturally flow through everything you do and be the reason behind why you do what you do- Remember your 'why'.

Well I've got news for you, you're only harming yourself, take care of your mental health and well being, focus on good quality sleep, have a nonwork related hobby to help re-set your brain, spend time with friends and family, because life is too short not to and eat as clean as you can.

I've said it once so I'll say it again- grow and diversify. In a world of digital reliance and transparency, nothing much gets done these days without some kind of complex matrix system surrounding it, so we need to move with the times.

INSTINCT Follow it- always, because nine times out of ten it will be right.

HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION Sounds a clichĂŠ but in order to run a business, make it a success and to stay relevant for as long as possible, it takes pure hard work, which comes in many forms. There will be knock backs and it will be a rollercoaster as they say, which is why determination to succeed is a must- Which leads on to my next point...

RESILIENCE Over sensitivity and leading with too much emotion can be a catastrophe in business. Stay true to yourself and your values, follow your instincts, but remain professional at all times, even when all you'd rather do is scream and brush off that bad day because tomorrow is another chance to start again and another amazing opportunity to make it a game changer.

PROFESSIONALISM AND LIKEABILITY So many times I have come across people running businesses who basically don't seem to have any kind of business acumen or professionalism, which dumbfounds me when they are representing their brand, service or product. You are the window into your business and people buy people. Find the perfect balance between professionalism and likeability and you're 75% of the way there to a new client, contract or deal. 10 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

BE COMPETITIVE I have always had this streak in me and I guarantee this is how I have ended up running one of the leading business networks in my industry in the country. Don't let your competitors bother you enough to de-motivate you and cause restless nights, but do keep an eye on them from a distance and stay not one, but ten steps ahead of them in every aspect you possibly can- meaning you need more than just one USP for your business- why not have two or three?

Be a risk taker (to a certain extent) and dare to be different, these qualities also make for a great leader.

NEVER BECOME COMPLACENT A friend of mine and owner of a well respected, award winning restaurant, once told me to "never become complacent" and those words rung true. Relating to embracing change, complacency in business is one of the deadliest of sins. Market, PR and celebrate achievements in your line of work continually - never stand still and expect customers to keep coming through the door, go get 'em!

Don't forget to also be competitive with yourself and set yourself goals, smash them, then set yourself the next one- Grow and diversify.

BE CREATIVE Even if you're not naturally, bring someone into the business who is. Innovation in business is the key to developing new ideas, inventions and brands. Think about it, there are still thousands if not millions of ideas, services, products and brands not yet event been launched, invented never mind thought of- mind blowing eh? Spend time 'brainstorming' or 'mind-mapping' away from your desk and work environment. My best ideas have come from country walks, sunbathing on holiday or somewhere else inspirational, where my mind is relaxed and I am at peace.

Nottingham we are back. The UK’s best Inflatable Assault course has got even bigger, bouncier and more insane. We have added crazy NEW obstacles to make the most fun and extreme inflatable obstacle event ever created.

In continuing our ten year anniversary celebrations and making sure that this year’s event is our biggest and best yet, we can today confirm even more stellar artists for #SplendourFest 2018. Joining the likes of Paloma Faith, The Charlatans, Marc Almond and The Stranglers will be two artists that have dominated the UK charts and the very best in upcoming and local talent to kick start your summer.

This time last year, it seemed highly unlikely the UK would vote to leave the EU; we had a reasonable opposition to the Tory Government; Donald Trump was a buffoon who surely wasn’t going to beat Hilary Clinton and Mark was living the married suburban ideal, a year later it’s all gone to absolute shit! But don’t worry, as Mark thinks Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright. Mark has written and presented many series of Mark Steel’s In Town on BBC Radio 4 (new series out soon) and toured it live around the UK. Mark has presented the BAFTA nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC2, is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Newsquiz. He’s also appeared on BBC2’s QI and Room 101. Mark has written several acclaimed books, including: Reasons To Be Cheerful and What’s Going On and he writes a weekly column for The Independent for which he won Columnist of the Year at the Press Awards in 2015.

THE NOTTINGHAM BEACH

With 6 top ten singles in her arsenal including ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, ‘Take Me Home’ & ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)’, Sophie will well and truly bring the party to Splendour this year! Having released one of the best-known and catchiest songs of the last 20 years, Toploader will take to the Confetti stage at this year’s festival.

This summer, the seaside will once again arrive in the city as the Nottingham Beach lands in the Old Market Square once more.

In addition to all of the incredible musical talent, we have Comedy in the Courtyard, the Gem Anthems Silent Disco, a dedicated Kids’ area, fringe entertainment and plenty of gourmet food and drinks.

Enjoy a trip to the seaside without leaving the city at Nottingham's urban beach in the Old Market Square.

Splendour Festival is a day out for the whole family, and we’re so excited to celebrate in style with you this year!

Review By Carly Swift

COCK & HOOP PUB LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE LACE MARKET, COCK & HOOP IS A REAL TRADITIONAL LOCAL ALE PUB. IN MAGAZINE WERE INVITED TO HAVE LUNCH THERE TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD TO OFFER. From the outside Cock & Hoop looks a very traditional English pub, with iron windows and black tutor beams. The interior continues that theme of exposed brick walls and some old oak panelled walls and old printed frames.

16 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

All the seating are mixed fabrics and styles. The Bar is what you first see as you walk into the cosy pub, even though it’s small it feels very grand and rustic. There was a basement area, where it felt we was going into the caves of Nottingham. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The Cock & Hoop had a relaxed and homely vibe, which is just what you want from a traditional English pub. Now time to try out the food... The menu was presented on a mini wooden clip board which was cute and kept in theme of the pub. The Menu was simple but had a good variety of choices. We opted for the Ploughman’s Platter. It arrived on a wooden board with Ham Hock Ballotine, Freshley backed bread, pickle, a selection of cheese and juicy red grapes.

The bread was still warm and lightly toasted. The pickle had a lovely kick which complimented the cheeses very well. Moving onto the main courses, we opted for Coronation Chicken Sandwich that came with hand cut chips and Roast Pork Belly that came with Black Pudding Mash and Savoy Cabbage. The Coronation Chicken was very creamy with lovely balanced spices, on fresh bloomer bread. The chips where beautifully cut and where really crispy, with a super fluffy centre.

THE COCK & HOOP HAD A RELAXED AND HOMELY VIBES, WHICH IS JUST WHAT YOU WANT FROM A TRADITIONAL ENGLISH PUB.

This is an ideal dish for lunch, as you’re not left feeling over stuffed, from too many carbs. The Roast Pork Belly tasted as good as it looked. The Pork just melted in the mouth followed with a lovely crunch of the crispy belly. The Black Pudding Mash was intriguing to say the least, but it worked as the textures complimented each other so well. The Savoy Cabbage had held a lot of flavour too, making this dish practically perfect for any time of the day. At this point we would have happily gone back to the office feeling satisfyingly full, but what’s a review without sampling dessert? This did take a while to decide on as all the choices sounded really tasty. We finally opted for Apple Crumble and Chocolate Brownie. The Apply Crumble was beautifully presented on a little wooden board with a small jug of warm custard and the crumble in a small cast iron skillet pan. It looked too pretty to eat!

@cockandhoop

I DO LOVE A CHOCOLATE BROWNIE AND THIS ONE DIDN’T DISAPPOINT! There was plenty of soft chunks of apple, making it very sweet, which complimented the crispy crumble. The custard was thick and gooey, which balanced the flavour of the Apple crumble. I do love a Chocolate Brownie and this one didn’t disappoint! The Chocolate was really smooth and intense with a nutty texture throughout. The scoop of vanilla ice cream really balanced out the richness of the Chocolate. We couldn’t fault the Cock & Hoop Pub even if we tried. It’s in a great location in the heart of Nottingham, with great food and atmosphere – what more would you want from a traditional English pub.

The Cock & Hoop Pub is joint with The Lace Market Hotel on 29-31 High Pavement, Nottingham, NG1 1HE

THE TAILORS ARMS ALWAYS STRIVING TO PRODUCE THE HIGHEST QUALITY FOOD, THE TAILORS ARMS ARE NOTTINGHAM’S NEWEST MEMBER TO THE GASTRO PUB SCENE AND YOUR NEXT MUST TRY! From weekday dining, delicious deserts and latenight drinks, to afternoon tea, weekend brunches and good hearty Sunday roasts, The Tailors Arms are a classic British gastropub with modern ideals. After recently taking over the premises that used to be the Wilford Green Pub & Kitchen, brother in laws Nick Procopiou and Theo Tsiolas teamed up to take on their newest venture: The Tailors Arms.

20 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Upon arrival we were greeted instantly with a warm friendly smile and taken straight to our seats. Serving a variety of traditional and modern dishes, there’s something for everyone at The Tailors Arms - you can’t go wrong! After speaking with the manager Theo, he told us that The Tailors Arms pride themselves in producing delicious high-quality food which is locally sourced and made with homemade recipes. Sourcing their products locally is something they strongly believe in and this is just one factor which makes the food taste so incredible. After hearing this we were very excited to try some food. We started off by ordering two of their cocktails. After speaking with Theo, we took his recommendations of The Navy Cut and Swizzle Sours.

The Navy Cut was lovely and fruity with hints of Appletons signature blend rum, pineapple, grapefruit, banana, honey and lime. The Swizzle Sours was delightfully sweet, with Havana Club 3 year old rum, violet, vanilla, lemon and egg white, it was wonderful. Two delicious choices if you have a sweet tooth like us. Now onto our starters and we decided on their Caesar Salad, Breaded Brie and Pork Belly. Whilst we waited for our starters to arrive we decided to take a look around the premises. The Tailors Arms interior is beautiful and homely, with open brick walls, comfy sofas and inspirational quotes.

THE PORK BELLY WAS SO TENDER IT MELTED IN THE MOUTH!

NOW ONTO OUR MAINS AND WE HAD OUR EXPECTATIONS VERY HIGH FROM OUR STARTERS. The Tailors Arms sure know how to create a lovely eating environment. Alongside this they also have their Flamingo Room which yes, is a room full of flamingo inspired items. With flamingo wallpaper, neon flamingo lights and other flamingo décor, this is a quirky modern room which is designed for private dining, functions and meetings. Just as we got back to our table our starters arrived and they smelt amazing. The Caesar Salad was so light and fresh and paired with their own homemade Caesar dressing, it brought the entire dish together. This dish can be ordered as a starter or main, with or without chicken too. Next, we tried their Breaded Brie. The beautifully crisp outside against the warm creamy centre created the most delicious brie we have ever tasted, and paired with the sweet cranberry sauce it was incredible. We highly recommend.

Finally, we finished our starters with their Pork Belly and we were completely speechless. So far this was our favourite dish. The pork belly was so tender it melted in the mouth and against the sweet apple sauce, it created an incredible sensation of flavours. A definite must try!

Paired with their delightfully creamy mash, carrots and red cabbage, it was delicious.

Now onto our mains and we had our expectations very high from our starters.

Finally, we delved into their pan fried duck breast which was paired with dauphinoise potatoes, red wine jus, sautéed vegetables and butternut squash puree. We only have one word for this dish incredible. Everything about this dish was perfect and a definite must try!

Ordering a variety of traditional and modern dishes, we wanted to try a wide selection. We opted for their famous Tailors Burger, Steak and Craft Ale Pie and Duck Breast, after a high recommendation.

By this point we were very full, but everything so far and been incredible so we knew we had to try their desserts. Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate S’mores were our top choices and we couldn’t wait to try them.

Their Tailors Burger came with smoked bacon, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, gherkin, red onion and their homemade burger sauce. Also served with a side of coleslaw and skin-on fries, this is a delicious classic dish you can’t go wrong with.

The Tailors Arms Chocolate S’mores are so delicious they should be a daily requirement. The milk chocolate mousse with creamy marshmallow and shortbread crunch certainly filled our sweet spot. Alongside this was their Sticky Toffee Pudding which was the perfect way to end our meal.

Don’t fancy a traditional burger? The Tailors Arms also do a Black & Blue burger! Onto their classic Steak and Craft Ale Pie, we continued to be amazed. The pie itself was enclosed in a beautifully crisp pastry packed full of tender cut steak that was full of flavour.

So, if you can’t tell already, IN Magazine had an amazing time visiting The Tailors Arms on Wilford Lane, and we highly recommend them to you as your next must try in Nottingham. You certainly won’t be disappointed!

HANDMADE NOTTINGHAM TUCKED AWAY DOWN ST JAMES’ STREET IN NOTTINGHAM CITY CENTRE IS A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE SHOP CALLED HANDMADE NOTTINGHAM. Solely dedicated to selling and showcasing all of Nottingham’s local creative talent, Handmade Nottingham has become a firm staple in Nottingham’s shopping scene. Rhea herself is a designer maker specialising in knitwear. Rhea studied Knitwear at Nottingham Trent University and after graduating, she started selling her work at various events and shops around Nottingham. At the time Rhea never knew this would lead to the start of what would become Handmade Nottingham.

24 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Originally starting as a collective of designer makers back in 2011, Rhea saw an opportunity to get a chalet on the Nottingham Christmas Market as a group. This meant they could split the cost, time and space between them equally and join forces together. After a huge success of the first chalet, they decided to return for another 2 years whilst also sharing stalls at other Nottingham events too. At this time there weren’t many maker markets in the city, so Rhea saw this as an opportunity to work with friends to organise maker markets, which at the time were called Bird in Borrowed Feathers Market. These were held around various venues in Nottingham and were all about giving designer makers a place to showcase their work. It was a little after this that Rhea was approached by the Malt Cross who were undergoing renovations.

As well as asking if Rhea would be interested in hosting a market once they’d reopened, they also had a pop-up shop space available for two months and asked if Rhea would be interested. Of course, Rhea instantly thought this would be a great opportunity to showcase a bigger variety of designers and definitely a lot warmer than the Christmas chalets! It was a unanimous yes from all the makers Rhea had previously been working with, and so the plans started for Handmade Nottingham. On 1st November 2014 Handmade Nottingham opened their doors to the public. After a successful two months they were given the opportunity to stay and Handmade Nottingham is still there 3 years on! Everyone who visits Handmade Nottingham are so excited that they showcase local makers.

This is so nice for the community, as it creates a platform that gives high street shoppers the opportunity to buy unique gifts while at the same time support local creatives. If you can’t make it down in-store, Handmade Nottingham have an online shop which Rhea is currently expanding. This is something that has always been close to Rhea’s heart as she’s always been keen to help local designer makers showcase their talent. Rhea is always looking for new talented designers to showcase. Rhea originally started stocking designers she already knew when Handmade Nottingham first started, but now due to popular demand, the waiting list for stockists has increased massively. Currently stocking everything from ceramics to jewellery, prints to textiles, Handmade Nottingham pride themselves in showcasing the best of Nottingham’s designer makers. They go through a delicate process choosing the right applicants. Designers pay to be in the shop for 3 months at a time and every quarter a few makers are changed around to keep things fresh whilst also giving other designer makers an opportunity.

As well as working with established makers, Rhea is also passionate about working with new designers. Whether you’re fresh out of University or taking a new career path, Rhea would love to hear from you. Knowing how hard it is to start a business and the challenges you face, Rhea is happy to offer a helping hand whether that be space in the shop, stalls at their markets or offering a bit of advice. Calling a huge audience year after year, Handmade Nottingham Markets bring shoppers down St James’s Street to see all the indie shops the street has to offer. Due to the increased popularity, this has encouraged more and more indie businesses to move onto the street. With likes of Dukki, Pop Press, Dizzy Ink and Plates Records, St James’s Street is becoming a great street for independent shopping in Nottingham. Originally starting back in August 2016, Handmade Nottingham’s Markets are a great day out for the whole family to enjoy. Showcasing a wide range of designers from crafts, ceramics, textiles, photography, print and lots of other beautifully designed handmade gift, there’s something for everyone.

Each year they host three exciting and very creative craft markets which showcase some of the UK’s best designers. The next Handmade Nottingham event is their Summer Market on Sunday 19th August which we hope you can make – we certainly can’t wait! During our visit, IN Magazine asked Rhea if she had any exciting future plans which she could tell us about. Rhea mentioned that she is really keen to start hosting Handmade Nottingham craft workshops and business talks. She has dipped her toe in with their first craft workshop with Little Egg Design to make your own banner which took place in April. Rhea hopes to be able to develop a full schedule of craft workshops but also business workshops aimed at small business to help them grow. So, as you can see IN Magazine had an amazing time visiting Rhea at Handmade Nottingham and we were truly inspired by her story. The next time you’re out and about in Nottingham’s City Centre make sure to pop in and say ‘Hello’ to Rhea on St James’ Street. I guarantee you don’t leave empty handed.

BEAUTY TRAVEL ESSENTIALS SUMMER IS HERE AND WE’RE PREPARING FOR THAT WELL-EARNED HOLIDAY – I KNOW I AM! AS WELL AS FROM BUYING A WHOLE NEW WARDROBE, I LOVE ORGANISING MY HOLIDAY SKINCARE AND MAKEUP ESSENTIALS. I used to find that no matter how good my skin was, as soon as I landed at my destination, my skin felt dry and horrible. I realised it was the air conditioning on the plane that dehydrated my skin.

Personally, I prefer eye masks, as they’re small and you can still have a chat with family or friends. My favourites are the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery Eye Masks. They're pricey, but so worth it - your eyes will look fresh, well rested and hydrated! So, you’ve arrived at your destination - woohoo! Once you’re unpacked, don’t forget to apply your SPF! They’re so many on the high street these days, there’s just no excuse.

Since then, I always apply a thick moisturiser about an hour before my flight and avoid wearing any makeup completely!

If you're on a long-haul flight, then I think you can get away with wearing a sheet face mask or eye mask. 28 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Plus, it helps to prevent blemishes and calming any that you may have already. Overall it just gives me a radiant, sun kissed glow, without looking a shiny mess. I love wearing bright lipsticks, but I tend to only reach for them in the summer months and on holiday. The obvious option is to go with bright fuchsias, why not try bright corals and oranges? Here’s a few of my favourites; Mac in Morange. Urban Decay in Streak, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Juan AND Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Liquid Colour Balm in Undress Me Coral.

Once settled on your flight, I would highly recommend wearing a facemask. But the last thing you need is a messy face mask, the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Mask is a great option. It’s lightweight and leaves your skin feeling hydrated and nourished in 15 minutes. If there any excess I always just massage it into my skin. Plus being only 10ml pot, it’s hand luggage liquid friendly.

It has a lovely coverage but still lightweight. It’s not greasy and helps control shine – so this is really good for oily skin too.

Throughout the daytime I avoid makeup as the last thing I want is my face melting in the heat. In the evening however, I love to wear makeup. I feel you can really have fun on holiday with makeup, without looking OTT. I always go with a BB cream for a base and the Vichy Normaderm Anti-Blemish BB is one of my favourites.

So I hope this helps you, when packing for your summer gate-away! Easy on them cocktails and have an amazing time! xXx

Interview By Sophie Colley

LIZ GEORGIADES DECORATIVE ARTS STUDENT LIZ GEORGIADES TALKS TO IN MAGAZINE ABOUT WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING A DESIGN STUDENT AT NOTTINGHAM TRENT, HER FUTURE PLANS AND HOW SHE FINDS HER INSPIRATIONS. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE DECORATIVE ARTS AT NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY? I love the variety of specialisms available on my course, I was interested in jewellery design when I started but didn’t want to limit myself to only that, as I have chosen the wrong university course before. I chose to study at Nottingham Trent because it is a great university with lots of workshop space and equipment and also highly ranked within the arts universities.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN RECENTLY PRODUCING ON YOUR COURSE? I specialize in metal work, and the last project was self-chosen, so I decided to focus on garden sculptures. I wanted to make large scale pieces but due to time and costing, I made miniature versions of my design idea instead.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM YOU’VE PRODUCED SO FAR? At university it’s probably got to be my glass piece from first year. I did a wire line drawing of a face trapped inside a glass sheet, and I was really happy with how it turned out.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION? I love faces, I don’t know why but when I get to choose what I’m doing I always go back to faces in some way or another.

I think this comes from when I did photography at A level as I love capturing expressions and emotions within work, which is what really drove my last project.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I like the idea of working for a large company, possibly as a buyer. I hate the idea of being in a workshop on my own all day, I love working as part of a team and get very bored of my own company! My pipe dream is to own a gallery shop with my bestie, selling and promoting design student’s and recent graduate’s work – maybe one day!

DO YOU FIND THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY CHALLENGING?

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF?

I don’t believe it’s as bad as people think, there is a lot of negative stigma around getting jobs within the creative industry.

My guilty pleasure is Kanye (his Graduation album of course),

I find it frustrating to hear people say if you do a creative course you will struggle to get a job as I don’t think this is true. All businesses need creative people to balance everything out. There’s a huge variety of job within the creative industry after all.

TOP 3 FAVOURITE ARTISTS? My top 3 artists would have to be Ellie Mac Embroidery’s work (@elliemac.embroidery) which is just amazing, Damien Blottière’s photography as it’s really cool and different and Pablo Picasso, not so much the paintings but his line drawings are so simple and beautiful.

I can’t paint and am really bad at fine drawing (so don’t let that put you off doing a creative course!) If you google my name I have an athlete profile from when I was 13.

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR ENTERING THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY TO WORK? My course offers the option to do a live trading project in my 3rd year which is very good for people wanting to set up on their own after university.

I have chosen to do the live trading instead of the dissertation, although I don’t want to run my own business, I think this is really helpful in creating a good understanding of businesses as a creative person. I’ve also been building up my online presence to showcase all of my work.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE WANTING TO GO TO UNIVERSITY TO STUDY SOMETHING CREATIVE? My best advice is to do what you love and not to let anyone put you off, this is your life and you are going to exceed more doing something you enjoy.

FOUR STATEMENTS SABOTAGING YOUR FITNESS GOALS WITH SO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE REGARDING DIET AND TRAINING, ITS HARD TO KNOW WHAT INFORMATION TO FOLLOW AND WHAT IS COMPLETE TRIPE! SO LETS GET FRANK... "YOU NEED TO EAT 6 TIMES A DAY OTHERWISE YOUR METABOLISM WILL SLOW DOWN"

"YOU CAN CHOOSE WHERE YOU LOOSE FAT FROM" Sadly no you can't! If you are looking to loose belly fat or just a little bit in your legs, it’s a full body process I’m afraid. Everyone’s body composition is different and therefore lose fat from different places at different rates. All you can do is maintain a consistent calorific deficit through nutrition and training until you see a reduction in that area.

Whether it be in the form of whole foods or naughty treats a little bit of sugar can go a long way. Predominantly you need glucose for energy and to keep your blood sugar levels regulated throughout the day to prevent cravings, dizziness, fuel activities and overall enable your body to function at optimal levels!

If you are on a weight loss journey having a little bit of what you fancy can be the difference in success or failure. Stay within your calorie deficit, swap out the odd healthy snack for a little something sweeter with the same calorie content and enjoy.

"DON'T EAT CARBS AFTER 7PM AS IT WILL STORE AS FAT" Good one! Whether its 3pm or 10 pm it comes down to total number of calories in the day consumed verses how many you have burnt!

32 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Sugar and spice is found in all things nice right! Yes you can have sugar and for many of my clients, I insist on it!

This will be attained through your carbohydrate intake but there is nothing to say you cant add a little bit of chocolate here and there.

Weight and body composition works on the basis of calories in vs calories out , so if you have 1 or 10 meals a day calories are calories no matter what time of day it is it wont make a difference.

So, if you work late and have a high carb meal at 9pm as long as you are within your overall calorie deficit you will still loose weight!

"YOU CAN'T HAVE SUGAR"

Feature By Sophie Colley

BACK IN THE OCTOBER OF 1998, TWO CREATIVES REETA BHOPAL AND TONY BRACK JOINED STRENGTHS TO BRING TOGETHER A NEW DREAM. With Tony already working within fashion and Reeta working as a makeup artist whilst crafting in the evenings, the pair wanted to create something unique that would shock the world. This became One BC. Originally meeting at Northampton University, Tony a Fashion Lecturer and Reeta a Fashion Student, the pair didn’t know then that they would later on own a bespoke clothing store. Tony has always been in touch with the creative industry by teaching fashion in various universities, one of which was in India with the United Nations Development Agency Programme.

34 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

ONE BC.

Alongside this, Tony had his own clothing brand Brack Clothing, which was in the Lace Market, Nottingham.

Within the showroom, Tony and Reeta have quite a few creations for both men and women which can be bought off the peg or to order.

After graduating from her fashion course at Northampton University, Reeta moved to London to become ‘Rich & Famous’.

Here they stock items such a trousers, jeans, jackets, shirts, t-shirts, dresses, skirts and accessories.

Being involved in various fashion shows as a Makeup Artist, Reeta began finding it hard to juggle her full-time job as well as creating in the evenings in her small flat in London.

Even though they stock what sounds like average items, believe me they are far from that. Their creations stand out from the crowd being wonderfully unique and head turning.

Moving onwards, both Tony and Reeta now own and work at One BC which is located in Sneinton Market Square, Nottingham.

Tony and Reeta bring together a vibrant fusion of global cultural influences.

After speaking to Tony and Reeta, we were fascinated to find out more about One BC. Offering a fully bespoke service, Tony and Reeta make everything from scratch in their onsite workshop which is at the back of the store.

They create one-off pieces that once they’re gone they’re gone, making them just as unique as their owner. With a huge selection of fabric swatches from leather, lace, suiting’s, embroidered, beading etc, Tony and Reeta can tailor for any tastes to create your perfect item.

One BC stands for Bespoke Clothing, a label with an attitude that represents creativity with quality and longevity. Back in the day Tony created a range of one off leather jackets for Pepsi Cola with each jacket labelled 1BC, 2BC etc. and when Reeta joined Tony, it made sense to call the business One BC. Their company slogan is ‘Fugitives from the law of averages’ and this truly reflects their extensive mix of items. Tony and Reeta’s first collection was called Cowboys & Asians. With such a huge positive response from this collection, they were asked to be fashion presenters for a programme that was aired for 26 weeks for Carlton TV. After hearing about these amazing collections, we were interested to hear about what other fascinating requests they’ve had. Being a bespoke tailors, Tony and Reeta have had all types of requests, everything from stage wear, wedding dresses, tailored suits for dogs, dolls outfits and everything in between. You name it, they’ve tailored it.

One BC is not only a store and workshop, but also a meeting place/hub for creatives. Turning the store front into a showcase room, they’ve had designers, artists, photographers, videographers, writers, authors and musicians that have all come along to inspire. The best part about One BC is that they are completely unique. We don’t know many people that create and work how Tony and Reeta do. How they produce everything themselves completely in-house is amazing. They have impacted the community so much and they are continuing to do so. Tony and Reeta design for each and every individual no matter what age, size or gender. They focus everything on the customer from start to finish, bringing your ideas to life. We were completely inspired by Tony and Reeta and we highly urge you to go down and pay them a visit. If you have a dream item you want creating, whatever the idea, they’re the people to visit. They make individuality a reality.

ALFRESCO PARTIES AND CREATING THE PERFECT ATMOSPHERE REMEMBER THOSE LONG HOT DAYS AND WARM SUMMER EVENINGS WHEN YOU CAN SIT OUT UNDER THE STARS TILL THE EARLY HOURS? WE’VE HAD A TASTE ALREADY THIS YEAR AND WITH SUMMER UPON US AT LAST CAN IMAGINE THAT FOR ONCE WE REALLY DO LIVE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN! Now with a few well-chosen accessories, you can easily create the look, the mood and feel to complete the scene For late evening alfresco dining, lighting is essential as the evening draws in. So as part of your preparation, hanging string lights through trees, along fences or wrap around pergolas. It’s a really easy way to add a touch of sparkle and now some solar driven lights have improved technology, you need not worry if there’s no outdoor socket nearby. 42 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Don’t neglect the edges of your garden either, an ingenious way is to pop a few statement lights in either your borders, in a group in the lawn or if you have a small backyard then plant pots will be just as good.

Solar Starburst Lights are stunning at dusk when they just burst automatically into action! Rechargeable lights are perfect for any alfresco parties too.

Charge them through the day on a USB plug and then in the evening hang them from trees, lamp stands or simply place on the table to allow the guests to see what they are eating! Most good quality rechargeable lights will run from 8 to 12 hours, plenty of time for serious partying. If you are a traditionalist at heart, then of course, nothing but candles will do! Then add a warmth and movement that technology struggles to match. Look for good, large lanterns that are large enough to stand on the floor. I always position lanterns on the edge of steps or pathways to light the way - especially important at the end of parties when the wine has flowed, the light is dimmer and the guests are a little less nimble on their feet than at the start of the evening.

Of course with the British weather, not every evening will be warm and balmy, so perhaps think about a fire bowl for your summer soiree? You can choose simple fire bowls where you and your guests can snuggle round and get cosy – or have one which is big enough and tall enough to double up as a relaxed BBQ. If contemporary is more your style, then the stainless steel and aluminum one by Dancook, just exudes Danish style. With any fire pit or fire bowl the key is in the lighting, don’t leave it to the last minute, plan ahead. Make sure the logs are dry and seasoned, light the logs well before the party starts, so that by the time the guests have arrived the fire is hot and smoldering, not just a pile of damp logs smoking away; no-one wants to smell like a bonfire the next morning.

Finally, if you strive to be the hostess with the mostess and are looking for an practical way to make life easy, carrying out drinks, nibbles, food etc, invest in an alfresco drinks trolley or some gorgeous outdoor tray tables. There are trolleys or side tables now that have integrated trays, so the top of the trolley is a tray and a table top in one and still with great style. We are not talking about the 1970’s Hostess Trolleys and choose colours that complement your outdoor furniture; be bold and enjoy!

For more information contact The Worm that Turned, at worm.co.uk or visit their store on Derby Road, Nottingham. They can help you cherry pick the perfect combination for your outdoor space.

SUMMER STYLING

WITH THE SUN SHINING WE ALL FEEL A NEW ENERGY AND AS SUMMER TAKES HOLD ITS NORMALLY THE TIME WE THROW OPEN THE DOORS AND WINDOWS AND ENJOY THE SUNSHINE.

44 | IN Nottingham | July • August 18

Why not take it one step further and use this season to provide you with a fantastic concept for your interior styling? This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to fill the house with floral prints and bright colours, but using a strong concept helps to keep your scheme on track and all working together. I have always loved using wallpapers to create an immediate impact and if you use something with a reflective design it will bounce the light around

and create interest throughout different times of the day. However, if you’d like to be bold and go for a striking design with a big presence then botanicals are a real hit at the moment. Prestigious Textiles have a stunning collection of leafy prints and embroidered linens showcasing a broad range of colour palettes. Zingy citrus greens, warmer terracotta and cool teal are all offered in the collection.

To keep the flow of your concept, make sure everything you choose has a relationship.

Take advantage of what summer really has to offer too.

Natural materials like wood, teamed with linens and wools are a wonderful blend when looking to bring the beauty of nature, indoors into your home.

Cut flowers are always present all over my home. The easiest way to introduce a pop of colour to a room.

A great place to find statement pieces of furniture in natural woods like mango, ash and oak is swooneditions.com.

These wall mounted vases are unusual, eyecatching and ever changing as you could play with different combinations of blooms.

This Karlsson sideboard in mango wood brings natural warmth with tonnes of sophisticated styling into your home.

So, whilst you’re sat outside with the bbq lit and ice and a slice in your G&T, take note of everything around you and get inspired – you can’t argue with Mother Nature!
