BLUEBIRD TEA CO.

Bluebird Tea Co. is a Brighton-based (but Nottingham-born) company – they’re selfproclaimed Tea Mixologists and this, for them, means that they’re all about creating blends that are going to intrigue, amaze and most importantly, spread happiness one cup at a time! Being Tea Mixologists means that Bluebird Tea Co. are blending a huge range of teas from around the world with ingredients like candied fruits, herbs, spices and even sometimes little snowflake sprinkles. They’re always on the look out for inspiration everywhere they go and this is pretty evident in blends like Rhubarb + Custard, Christmas Cake and even fiery Chilli Kale Matcha – seriously, don’t knock it until you try it! The whole company started with just Krisi and Mike literally hand-blending loose-leaf teas in her bedroom and selling them at local markets. Bluebird Tea Co. come a long way since then – with over 200 blends, 16 Great Taste Awards and 5 amazing stores! They’re open in Brighton, Bristol, Tunbridge Wells, London and of course, Nottingham. The support they’ve received from everyone in Nottingham has been exceptional and it’s great to be home.

NOTTINGHAM COFFEE CLUB

Intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham has curated an urban dining experience showcasing the city’s best independent food traders.

Nottingham Coffee Club has now opened as an extended venture of the Nottingham Street Food Club. Featuring the best of the city’s bakery and coffee from local independent traders, it will further broaden the appeal of the centre which has been transformed over the last three years. The coffee is supplied by homegrown roasters 200 degrees and there’s tea from Nottingham-born BlueBird Tea Co, which opened a shop in the city’s Victoria Street last month. As well as teas and coffees, there’s also a selection of freshly baked goods made with love and passion. The 65-seater Nottingham Coffee Club will be open seven days a week, from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Nathaniel Wilson, operator of Nottingham Street Food Club and Coffee Club, said: “We have great local talent in Nottingham and intu Victoria Centre is the perfect place for us to showcase what we can do for a large audience. We’re supporting some amazing independent traders and this gives them the perfect platform to expand what they are already doing so well.” Lo

BEING A WAGAMAMA REGULAR AND FALLING INTO MY TYPICAL ROUTINE OF ORDERING THE SAME THING ON EVERY VISIT, I DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO EXPAND MY TASTE BUDS AND TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. With their new menu being released fairly recently, IN Magazine received an invite and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to try something new and exciting. From start to finish the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and full of energy. After ordering our Peach Iced Teas, which were refreshing and sweet, we set our eyes on the menu

6 | IN Nottingham | January 18

WAGAMAMA to decide what delicious new foods we were going to try.

spice and texture and something I’d recommend to everyone with or without the tofu!

We started with some Edamame Beans, something I’d actually never tried before. With a swing in his step and a chirp in his voice, the waiter jingled “Here’s your Edamame Beans.”

We also decided on the Grilled Duck Donburi that looked as great as it tasted. Beautifully tender shredded duck leg, in a spicy teriyaki sauce served with a mixture of vegetables on a bed of sticky Japanese rice with a crispy fried egg to top it off. A super tasty creation, which Wagamama is known for.

They were so simple yet delicious to eat, with a thin layer of salt sprinkled over the top, it created a perfect start to our scrumptious lunch. Tori Kara Age is my go to every time I go to Wagamama and I know I said I wanted to order something different but these crispy chicken pieces dressed in spiced sesame and soy sauce are to die for and I just couldn’t pass them by! I ordered their new vegan dish, Kare Burosu Ramen. In absolute amusement to the staff and chef’s, I cheekily asked if they would mind adding steak to the dish (which is usually served with tofu). The dish was the perfect concoction of warmth,

Resisting desert, as we were both officially full after not being able to stop eating our food, we both ordered a mint tea. And breathe! Obviously seeing the disappointment in our eyes that we had no room left to have a yummy pudding, our fantastic waiter Ben, surprised us with a Chocolate Layer Cake. Full of yummy layers of chocolate sponge, dark chocolate parfait and hazelnut cream, it was the perfect end to the perfect meal. And we rolled our way back to the office!

RADIANT NEW SKIN AND RELAX…THE FESTIVE SEASON IS FINALLY OVER AND WE CAN ALL GET BACK TO OUR NORMAL ROUTINES! AS MUCH AS I LOVE THE FESTIVE SEASON, IT’S VERY CHAOTIC, WITH CHRISTMAS SHOPPING, PARTIES AND JUGGLING WORK AND FAMILY LIFE – IT’S SUPER STRESSFUL AND TIRING AND THAT ULTIMATELY WILL SHOW THROUGH YOUR SKIN. BALANCE With stress and tiredness, your skin will go crazy, so you need to try and get it back under control and balance it out. Serums are usually key to this, I recommend YourGoodSkin Balancing Skin Concentrate. It works with your skin to restore and maintain your skin’s natural balance, with ingredients like Green Tea, Vitamin C & E and Japanese Lily Turf. It claims that you’ll have visibly healthier skin in 28 days and I can confirm this is the case! I’m already on my 2nd bottle!

OILS Our skin produces oil naturally, with some of us producing more than others. It’s important that you put oil back into your skin, as it keeps the skin 10 | IN Nottingham | January 18

smooth and moist. Which is better than dry and flaky! I recommend Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which has recently become a holy grail product of mine. It’s a facial oil that visibly restores the appearance of your skin by the morning. You’ll wake up with super soft skin, looking radiant and fresh! Having oily skin myself, I’ve always avoided facial oils, but it’s reduced my oil production to a normal level.

FACE MASKS Anytime is a good time for a face mask, especially in January. There are so many on the market that claim to do a variety of things -it’s crazy! Clay and Sheet masks are my favourite. For a clay mask, my go to is Sand & Sky’s Brilliant Skin Pink Clay Mask! It detoxifies, brightens, tightens pores and boosts your natural radiance! For a sheet mask, my favourite is Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask. It’s so easy to use and super hydrating. In just 15 minutes your skin will feel really hydrated, plump and radiant.

COLOUR CORRECTING A result of being tired and stressed is dark circles and pigmentation, yet some of us also naturally suffer with these. I’m one of these people and I find no matter how much concealer I wear, it still shows through! A lot of brands now have colour correcting products and I find Urban Decay do the best ones. My favourite one is Peach for my dark circles, I use this between my primer and foundation and as if my magic, I look like I’ve had a week’s worth of sleep!

GLOW To give you that extra bit of glow and radiance after applying your makeup, go with a blush that has a sheen through it. I recommend NARS Blush in Orgasm! It’s a lovely peachy-pink shade, which will give you that pop of colour but still look natural. It’s important to make time and pamper for yourself all year round, but make sure you really do this month. You’ll then be set for the rest of the year. Happy New Year to you all and here’s to looking radiant!

Business

CONVERSATION STARTERS FOR NETWORKING MANY PEOPLE ASK ME IF I HAVE ANY TIPS ON HOW TO APPROACH SOMEONE OR BREAK INTO A GROUP AT A NETWORKING EVENT, SO HERE IS MY STEP BY STEP GUIDE... 1. Remember in networking you are ‘Farming’

NOT ‘Hunting’- It is important to keep in the back of your mind at all times, that you are networking in order to build good quality relationships with people, with view to doing business with them in the near future- NOT selling to them in the room.

2. Be honest- Explain you’re new to networking

or this event and you may be surprised to hear that person is too, creating a commonality immediately, which will inevitably break the ice.

3.“How did you hear about this event?” This is a nice follow on from tip number 2 and will get the conversation going straight away. 4.“What line of work/business are you in?”

Be straight forward and ask - but remember to make eye contact and be genuinely interested.

By Fio na Du ncan

5. “So what has bought you here today?” A great conversation starter- simple.

9. “How long have you been a member of

6. “Do you mind if I say hello and introduce

10. “What do you most like about what you do?”

myself, I’m new here?” Again straight to the point but a soft approach, laying the onus on the other person to then have to respond.

7. “Wow its busy isn’t it, do you mind if I join you here in the quiet corner?” This one is always good if of course firstly the event is busy and secondly it may reach people similar to you who are a little more shy or new to networking. 8. “What a beautiful venue- have you been here before?” (Of course only use this if it really is a beautiful venue), this can be tailored to other observations about the venue or food itself however in order to break the ice.

this group?”

(People love to speak about themselves, so this one will work in most situations).

11. “What types of businesses tend to send you the best referrals?” This shows that you are thinking about their business as of the moment you meet them. 12. “What can I do to help you?”/ “Who are you looking to meet here today?” This shows that you are interested in helping them and that you are a good connector of business.

Great Scott! Time-travelling magicians Morgan & West bring a magical extravaganza to a millennium near you!

Three broken hearts, one Soho hang-out, and the only man who could ever help them…

Not content with their lot as the nineteenth century’s greatest magic duo, this prestidigitatory pair present a conjuring spectacular to the audiences of the modern day. No future is left unseen and no timeline left unaltered as these temporal tricksters burst into the twenty-first century with a show brimming over with baffling magic, unparalleled precognitive powers, and a totally genuine ability to travel through time! An unforgettable evening of magic, mystery, and the unexplainable.

Welcome to the Preacher Man, the swinging 1960s Soho joint where the kids danced the night away to the latest crazes and dared to dream of love, whilst the legendary owner, The Preacher Man himself, dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts. Only, that was a long time ago and all that remains are the memories, the stories and the myths. Until now, that is, when three random strangers, generations apart but all in need of help with their hopeless love lives, are inexplicably drawn to the site of the original venue. The Preacher Man is long gone, but his son, with help from the wonderful Cappuccino Sisters, might just find it in himself to channel the spirit of The Preacher Man and once more give these three lovesick strangers the look of love. Directed and choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel-Horwood and starring Debra Stephenson (The Impressions Show, Bad Girls, Coronation Street) and Alice Barlow (Hollyoaks, Drifters).

The Interview

ris By Ch

Ellis

JONNY OWEN IS PART OF A FORMIDABLE DUO WHO ARE PUTTING NOTTINGHAM FIRMLY ON THE MAP. THE 46-YEAR-OLD IS THE PARTNER OF NOTTINGHAM ACTRESS VICKY MCCLURE WHO HAS STARRED IN A HOST OF HIT FILMS AND TV SERIES, INCLUDING THIS IS ENGLAND, LINE OF DUTY AND BROADCHURCH. Welshman Jonny was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1971 and it is almost a case of you name it and Jonny has done it. As a teenager he was a Welsh boxing champion but it was not just sport that he excelled in. His indie band, The Pocket Devils, were signed to labels in the UK and the USA in the 1990s. The band split when Jonny got his first break in acting in 1999. His acting career took off and he appeared in Channel 4’s British comedy-drama series Shameless, as well as Murphy’s Law and My Family. At the same time, he started to write drama and documentaries, working extensively with ITV Wales, and he went on to win a Welsh BAFTA for the 40th anniversary documentary of the Aberfan disaster. Jonny also worked with BBC Sport and is the writer and creator of Svengali, a cult internet series which was later turned into a film. 16 | IN Nottingham | January 18

JONNY OWEN It was this which led him to meet Vicky and begin a journey which would make Nottingham his home and put him in the hearts of thousands of Nottingham Forest supporters. “Nottingham is my home now,” he said. “It has been a fantastic city for me and has given me Vicky, a great group of friends and some amazing work which has been really interesting. We moved from London as Vicky was a bit homesick and wanted to move back to Nottingham. I came here and I didn’t really know anybody.

“One of the first things I did, which is quite funny looking back, was I went and watched the football and I remember Vicky going ‘but you don’t know anybody’ and I thought I would soon get to know people. That’s what you do really, you follow a team and you share that passion. I went to a Forest match and got to know people.” His love of sport, in particular football, led him to be involved in the launch of local television channel Notts TV and the ideas were sown for the award-winning I Believe Miracles – the film telling the story of the remarkable success of Forest under

“THE BEST THING ABOUT NOTTINGHAM IS THE PEOPLE. THEY ARE SO ACCOMMODATING. ONCE THEY TAKE YOU IN, THEY CAN’T DO ENOUGH FOR YOU AND I HAVE MADE FRIENDS FOR LIFE. IT IS NO SECRET THAT I LOVE THE CITY AND I LOVE ITS PEOPLE.”

Brian Clough as they were transformed from a side in the second tier of English football to double-winning European Cup champions. “Vicky introduced me to Craig Chettle who was starting Notts TV and he asked me if I was interested in helping set up the channel and within a few weeks I was helping set up the sports side of things,” Jonny explained. “One day we were talking and he felt the story of the great Nottingham Forest team of the late 70s and early 80s was an amazing story in the sense of what they achieved and where they had come from. I spoke to a few of the players; John Robertson, Frank Clark, Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett, who live in the vicinity of the city.

“NOTTINGHAM IS MY HOME NOW.” “Initially it was going to be a small thing but quite quickly I realised it was going to be much bigger. I remembered so much stuff from my childhood about Nottingham Forest and thought ‘there’s something in this’. “From there I took the idea down to London and Craig backed me to take it to some big distribution companies in London. They went for it and it became a film and a massive success. It became a much bigger thing than I expected to be and I knew I needed to get the story right for it to succeed.”

The film was a massive success and was produced right here in Nottingham by Spool Films, with many local residents playing their part in the production of the film which became a hit across the UK on the big screen and with DVD sales. The success of I Believe in Miracles led to another football film – this time charting the success of Wales at Euro 2016 where they reached a semifinal defeat by Portugal. “When I went to France no-one expected Wales to do what they did, so I went there just as a fan,” said Jonny. “I wasn’t thinking about making a film and looking back I am pretty glad about that now. “I would have been worried about shots, coverage, who I spoke to and angles for shots. In some ways it was almost better that I went as a fan, but afterwards the Welsh FA were very good with me and offered me the footage and they had seen what I had done with I Believe In Miracles. “They handed me the footage and told me to get on with it. They didn’t see the footage until the night of the premiere. It was amazing really. I really enjoyed it and I do them all in Nottingham, so that’s great. They all get edited here in Nottingham.”

But what next for Jonny? One thing he is keen to make clear is that Nottingham will be the base for many of his next moves. With a whole host of film, television, acting, documentary and production work behind him, what next for the man who has done a bit of everything? “I am doing another football film, that is the last of the trilogy really,” he said. “Then I will do some drama-based stuff I think. A lot of it will be from Nottingham. There is so much talent in the city it’s incredible. “Of course there’s someone like Shane Meadows, who everyone knows, and these people stay in Nottingham and that says it all. “They don’t need to go to London. Media companies like Antenna and Confetti are amazing and are really now on the map. “The best thing about Nottingham is the people. They are so accommodating. Once they take you in, they can’t do enough for you and I have made friends for life. It is no secret that I love the city and I love its people.”

Education Feature

WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR 2018?

WITH THE GROWING NEED FOR ID’S, AND THE HOPES OF UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS, SEVENTEEN YEAR OLDS, LIKE MYSELF, ARE FINDING IT TRICKY TO BALANCE EDUCATIONAL COMMITMENTS AND NEW, EXHILARATING SOCIALISING. Therefore, my ambition for 2018 is optimism. Teenagers are pulled into an overwhelming competitive environment. Adults, who have experienced these challenges, no doubt have some sympathy. I’m sure the stereotype of wanting to build a portfolio of properties and a prosperous job has been imprinted into your brain from TV, too; for me the reality of this future prospect is inevitably false and what’s important is to be part of a diverse community made up of people’s different aspirations, uniqueness and individuality. My ambition, to remain sanguine, will allow me to strive, like many teenagers hope too, to take on the extensive opportunities available (and compile a large personal statement that will accentuate my qualities). But even though my ambition could be perceived as too optimistic, as an independent teenager, who only wants to achieve the best, why wouldn’t I want to overestimate my ambition? The demand from social aspects of being a teenager, as many adults are familiar with, and the want to be independent and “old”, offers opportunities a curriculum cannot prepare you for. We all want to enjoy all cultures, in our communities or in the wider world. But there is also the drive to succeed in A Levels to get the best start in life: it is difficult to prevent things from de-balancing the harmony. But, with the New Year on the horizon, I will remain optimistic for my future as an aspiring (and balanced) student. 18 | IN Nottingham | January 18

NEW YEAR. IMPROVED ME? ENDLESS AMBITIONS (NECESSARY TO AMELIORATE OUR SELF-ABSORBED LIVES AND BE MORE FOCUSED AND DESIRE-DRIVEN) ENTER THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MINDS. As individuals from an array of backgrounds we all have different outlooks on life and what we want from life depends upon how we perceive our surroundings. Nonetheless, we all peruse our New Years with specific ‘fundamental’ ideologies that we know we can’t hold ourselves to for too long. The good old, ‘In 2018, I’m going to make myself a better person’, is as tiring as it sounds. But you would be kidding yourself if this statement hasn’t crossed your mind recently. Yet, more often than not, ‘My ambition for the year is to lose weight and become fit and healthy’. Subconsciously, that thought always seems to seep into my mind during the festive period whilst indulging in my ‘final’ chocolate, as I’m sure this is the case for many of us; which succours to reduce the guilt, slightly. Astonishingly, for 2018 I have taken the decision to change things up and be more realistic about my ambitions, whilst still being something attainable. Yes, I do still want to be a ‘better person’, and become ‘fit and healthy’, but outside these basic aspirations, I intend on balancing my life that bit further: I will make time for certain moments. I intend on prioritising more significant aspects of life, like spending more quality time with my family, or on an everyday basis being able to alleviate my stress in an efficient way. My 2018? Affirmative change and gratification.

2018: A YEAR OF HOPE. WITH PERSONAL AIMS TO PASS GCSES, AND GET INTO COLLEGE, THE DAYS WHEN MY STRONGEST DESIRE WAS TO GET THE LAST MUFFIN IN THE CANTEEN MUST UNFORTUNATELY COME TO AN END. As my bucket list slides to the bottom of my priorities and my ambitions to play in the World Cup (due to a pulled hamstring) are sadly pushed to one side, I hardly have time to tick off more than what’s needed. Taking their place, creeps in physical trauma, blistered feet and all the anguish which accompanies my goal to pass DofE; instead of learning how to roll sushi, a former ambition of mine, I will aspire to accumulate as many precious UCAS points as possible so I can get into my dream university, LSE. Attaining my ambitions for 2018 is crucial for the years succeeding it – ultimately fulfilling a personal desire to earn more than my parents (to have a family, to pay that mortgage…). So yes, my ambitions are standard, seemingly boring; although I do want to try crazy challenges and change the world, I have many academic things to achieve. So 2018, for me, is full of hope. But I do want to inspire, you, dear reader, to get up and go out. Fulfil your ambitions, even if you have to be patient.

Thank you to Abbie Law and Nikita Sahni from Year 12 and Nadia Ilyas from Year 11 at Nottingham High School, for telling us about your ambitions for 2018! We at IN Magazine hope you’re successful with your ambitions in 2018 and beyond!

PULP FRICTION SIT TING DOWN IN THE FAMILIAR AND HOMELIKE PULP FRICTION CAFÉ, LOCATED INSIDE OF THE NATIONAL JUSTICE MUSEUM, WE MET WITH JILL CARTER, WHO FOUNDED PULP FRICTION ALONGSIDE HER DAUGHTER JESSIE CARTER-KAY. Pulp Friction is a social enterprise which provides volunteering opportunities, support and employs young people with learning disabilities, helping them to develop work-readiness, social and independence skills. Pulp Friction run pedal-powered smoothie bars as well as run several cafes across Nottingham. A fun, friendly and supportive environment is ensured, and members are encouraged to work at their own pace and to their own strengths. When Jessie, who has a moderate learning disability, was 18 she decided she was ready to join the working world and chose to work in the hospitality industry, applying for jobs at a few restaurants. After being unsuccessful in being offered an opportunity, her mother Jill vowed to help Jessie find a place of work where her learning disability wasn’t the focus and a place where Jessie would have the opportunity to show her skills. 20 | IN Nottingham | January 18

After thinking about and researching ideas, in 2009, when visiting the Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood Forest, Jill and Jessie happened across a stationary bike, that when pedalled, made smoothies!

They were granted funding of £1800 and there began the Pulp Friction Smoothie Bar Project. The money was used to start their new business venture and helped them to buy a smoothie bike, laptop and mobile telephone.

Chatting with the owner of the smoothie bike, the gentlemen gave Jill and Jessie all the information they needed and there began their first idea of how to get Jessie into work.

One of their first events was at a Youth Club where they pedalled away and made delicious smoothies for its members.

Shortly after, Jessie and four friends applied for The Youth Opportunities Fund, a government grant that provides money for young people to use on activities and projects.

Whilst there, a parent came over and asked if Jessie could take the bike along to his BBQ in the next few days and offered to pay for the service. Soon, the word was out, and the Pulp Friction Smoothie Bar was attending events such as school

A FUN, FRIENDLY AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT IS ENSURED, AND MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO WORK AT THEIR OWN PACE AND TO THEIR OWN STRENGTHS.

JILL TOOK VOLUNTARY REDUNDANCY AND GAVE HERSELF 6 MONTHS TO DEVELOP THE PROJECT. fairs, youth clubs, play schemes, community festivals and more. With Jill working a full-time job, the limitation of time she had to invest in Pulp Friction began to take its toll as she dreamed of being able to turn it into a successful business. In 2011, Jill took voluntary redundancy and gave herself 6 months to develop the project. With fear creeping in, Jill took on a part-time role and developed the project in her spare time. In 2014/15, the Pulp Friction Smoothie Bar Project was running as a business and earning money that was being put straight back into the business and enabled the team to buy more equipment.

Later, Pulp Friction came across an empty café at The National Justice Museum and opened another café, offering even more people the opportunity to get into work! The two cafes now work alongside each other, and members can train, learn and develop their skills feeding the stations courageous and honourable employees and once they have completed their training, they then begin ‘finishing school’ at the museum café. Once members are ready and comfortable to move on, Pulp Friction helps them to find paid employment. Jill and Jessie have done an exceptional job at growing Pulp Friction to where it is now and both, as well as all its members, are greatly inspiring and are proving that those with learning disabilities can work anywhere successfully – all it takes is drive and determination.

ONCE MEMBERS ARE READY AND COMFORTABLE TO MOVE ON, PULP FRICTION HELP THEM TO FIND PAID EMPLOYMENT. Pulp Friction are now looking for additional spaces so they can expand even further and offer more people this great opportunity.

Contact Pulp Friction for more details on pulpfrictionsmoothiebarproject@yahoo.co.uk @PulpFrictionCIC

In total, they now have five smoothie bikes plus one ice cream and sorbet bike. From there, Pulp Friction grew and started running cooking courses, opened Pulp Friction Allotment – a Dig-In Community Allotment in Stapleford and after taking a smoothie bike along to an event at Bestwood fire station, where they were offered the stations empty kitchen to use if they wished. The following January, Pulp Friction opened its first cafe, where its members could experience a real working environment. Taking on more volunteers, Pulp Friction was training more people with learning disabilities how to front a business and grow their confidence. January 18 | IN Nottingham | 21

Style Colour Block Funnel Neck Jumpber - M&S

WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF GET TING STUCK IN A RUT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR STYLE. THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT STICKING WITHIN YOUR COMFORT ZONE THAT’S SO APPEALING, BUT DO WE NEED TO BE SO SAFE? It’s something that I’ve been discussing on my blog recently, and ultimately a topic I’ve become passionate about. Typically I’m a jeans, jumper and an ankle boot kind of girl. That’s my style and that’s who I am. Or so I thought, until one day something clicked. Why can’t I wear these clothes that look so wonderful on everyone else? Why should the colour red not be worn by a redhead like me? Do we need to be so limiting and hard on ourselves? Should we push our fashion boundaries more? It’s still a work in progress, and will continue to be throughout 2018, but I’ve already started wearing dresses and skirts more, and dare I say it, even the colour red! It’s still me, but a more carefree and expressive version. The confidence is something I’ve had to fake, but within time it grows and I’m happier for it. 22 | IN Nottingham | January 18

I know many people feel like how I did and there’s a lot of pressure on women to look good, but I think we should all wear what we want to wear, despite how scary that concept is in the beginning. If you make fashion mistakes, you’ll learn from it. Don’t let that stop you from experimenting with your clothing, no matter how big or small. Whether it’s a bold new colour you’re nervous to try, a style of hat you wouldn’t usually wear or that beautiful floral dress you’ve never worn just sitting at the back of your wardrobe.

EXPERIMENTING WITH STYLE THIS JANUARY Remember, they’re only clothes and you wear them, they don’t wear you.

Over time you’ll discover new ways of dressing that you love and that feel-good feeling will shine right through! Why not make it your mission for this year? A new years resolution perhaps?

NEW YEAR, SAME ME THE NEW YEAR BRINGS WITH IT MANY WONDERFUL THINGS; JANUARY SALES, FROSTY MORNINGS AND A CHANCE FOR A NEW CHALLENGE OR START. That being said, I think it’s very easy to fall into the trap of wanting to change every little thing about yourself and your body.

Making big declarations and then feeling rubbish when you inevitably fail to meet the impossible targets you’ve set yourself within a small time frame, instead of making tweaks to your life. That’s why this year I’m setting myself the goal to practice more self care. Now, this isn’t about to develop into a sex column (not today, anyway) – self care is the art of taking the time to give yourself a bit of a break or something you need in order to keep your mind, body and inner self, at the right balance to go about life. That could be anything from giving yourself a facial, making a hearty vegetable soup or hitting the gym for a work out. It even means if you want to treat yourself to those shoes because you worked hard over Christmas, then you do that! January 18 | IN Nottingham | 23

HOW TO AVOID THE WINTER BLUES

WHEN THE TREE HAS BEEN RECYCLED AND THE DECORATIONS ARE BACK IN THE LOFT, IT CAN LEAVE YOUR HOUSE FEELING A LIT TLE BARE AND DRAB.

I have always been a huge fan of wallpaper as it can transform a space completely.

You could even mix and match papers and get really creative.

Great for colour, pattern or texture you can be as bold or subtle as you wish – whatever suits you and your home.

Two casadeco.fr/en/ wallpapers from the French company’s Ambassade Collection.

But do not despair! Help is at hand and you don’t need to spend a fortune or have a complete overhaul to make your home feel special again. I find introducing lamps, are a clever way of bringing interest back into a room, especially in the winter months when the nights are longer, and we switch on earlier. Soft, warm lighting feels cosy and welcoming. These quirky, colourful lamps by Dar Lighting available from wayfair.com for £58.99 each, are just an example of fun additions to any scheme and can complement or contrast your colour palette. A feature wall is a really quick way of putting back appeal when you want to add some personality.

Dar Lighting - wayfair.com 26 | IN Nottingham | January 18

If you prefer to adorn your feature wall with paint, Little Greene have an offering of 191 paint colours on their most recent colour chart which is available free of charge at littlegreene.com - definitely something to please everyone! If you are looking to fill the space that the tree and the presents occupied, an accent chair is a lovely focal point. Be daring and brave and go for a show stopper like this traditional chair (page 26) which has been gilded and then upholstered in a very contemporary fabric to create the ultimate wow factor. Of course, whatever the season or the weather outside, there’s one rule that always applies - layer it up! Fabrics, patterns, colours – mix it up a little. This ‘Pretty in Pink’ selection chosen by Emily Todhunter are all available from oka.com (below).

Remember to look after all your senses too. When all the lovely scents of Christmas, like the pine, the chocolate and the brandy have gone, be sure to replace them.

Made from recycled wine bottles and poured in Cornwall, these Vineyard Candles are not only visually charming, but with the wide variety of fragrances available, they appeal to everyone’s personal taste. And not forgetting my final tip – just like a puppy, twinkling fairy lights are a joy to be loved all year – not just for Christmas!!!

Health

By Kat Atkins (Personal Trainer)

HEALTHY NEW YEAR NOBODY NEEDS A NEW YEAR TO START A FRESH OR TO SET SOME GOALS, BUT LET’S FACE IT, THE SECOND THAT CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT, MOST PEOPLE WILL HAVE MADE THEIRS, SO WE MAY AS WELL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TIME OF YEAR AND SET SOME OURSELVES. Our motivation is at its highest in the New Year, we will have had time to reflect on the past year and decide it’s time to change things. I can almost guarantee that most people will have a fitness / weight loss goal in mind and that’s absolutely great. There is nothing more important than our health. The problem is so many people will jump straight in the deep end and by March they will have given up - so here’s my top tips to reaching your fitness goals.

CREATE HEALTHY HABITS

MEAL PREP

Create healthy habits that are maintainable for you! Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, this is your journey.

Finally my advice to you is to prep your meals, as this is key to staying on track and it can also save you lots of money as you won’t be buying excess food.

Don’t follow fad diets create something you can stick with. Remember you’re getting fit for life, not just a few weeks! You could buy some weights and exercise equipment for your home or start the gym or maybe take up running. Just go for it!

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Even if you don’t have time to make them in advance, try writing your meals down at the beginning of the week and stick to that plan. Most importantly, remember it takes at least 28 days to form a habit, so don’t expect results over night.

Starting new things can feel really intimidating, but that’s only because your pushing out of your comfort zone, which means you’re growing.

Make life style changes and not just new year’s resolutions, be kind to yourself and have fun, you should be on this journey because you love your body not because you hate it.

You’re also likely to find new friends with the same interests as you which will really help keep you motivated, remember even the people who are experts were once beginners.

We all have rubbish days, what’s important is that you don’t unpack and live there, a few bad days won’t ruin all your hard work, just draw a line under it and keep on going!

If you don’t know what you’re doing, seek advice especially in the gym, that’s what the trainers are there for.

DECIDE WHAT IT IS YOU WANT AND WRITE IT DOWN I actually write my goals down every Sunday, that way I’m constantly reminding myself of what I’mworking towards. Split your goals down to short, medium and long term that way you can see what you’re working towards now as well as the bigger picture. 28 | IN Nottingham | January 18
