Find them in Intu Victoria Centre on the lower mall. *They reserve the right to be offended if you don’t think their shakes are the best thing you’ve ever put in your mouth.

THE BOTANIST

Now open in West Bridgford, The Botanist transformed the old Fire and Ice building on Bridgford Road. Their concept is all about the experience alongside good food. They offer a soon to be world-famous selection of botanical cocktails, craft beers and ales, Champagne and wine. With their food inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ. Complete with live music every night. Customers will love being able to stop by for a daytime coffee, an after-work cocktail with a twist or an evening bite to eat from a carefully crafted and popular food menu, enjoyed against a backdrop of great live music. They also can expect botanical twist on classic favourites, such as Rhubarb and Gin Old Fashioned or a Green Pepper and Grapefruit Daiquiri. The atmospheric surroundings will be brought to life with regular live music, with the cosy, homely venue playing host to high energy evening gigs, as well as chilled out Sunday afternoon sessions.

Review

THE BOTANIST

ft l y Sw i By Car WHEN GOING OUT FOR A MEAL, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT HOW GOOD THE FOOD IS BUT ALSO ABOUT HOW YOU EXPERIENCE IT. Now open in West Bridgford, The Botanist concept is all about the experience alongside good food. They offer a variety of botanical cocktails, craft beers and ales, Champagne and wine. Their food is inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ. Complete with live music every night. The décor is unique with antiques and trinkets hanging from the brick walls, with ivy wrapped around large wooden beams complete with an amazing chandelier made from old glass bottles. The menu is packed full of home comforts, deli boards, salads and of course desserts, not forgetting a children’s menu. Usually I would have opted for a main and share a dessert, but as this is a review we had to sample a little bit of everything. For starters we chose crispy calamari, a basket of wings and baked Camembert. We were certainly not disappointed! The calamari was perfectly cooked and very crispy. The wings came in a super cute mini picnic basket and was full of flavour and the creamy Camembert was complete with little crispy bacon pieces.

6 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

With our mains of steak and ale pie, fish and chips and BBQ pulled pork burger on the way, we can’t contain our excitement! WOW! That has to be the best BBQ pulled pork burger that I’ve ever tasted with so much flavour, I didn’t want it to end. The chips were properly seasoned too.

WE’RE PRETTY FULL BY THIS POINT, BUT WE STILL ORDERED DESSERT - IT’S A MUST! OMG! The batter on the juicy fish was crispy and light complete with yummy mushy peas and tartar sauce and of course the properly seasoned chips. Nailed it! Pies can sometimes be really hit or miss regarding if the pastry is crispy enough and if the pie has enough filling. But this steak and ale pie was a hit! The pie was full of filling complete with mash, mushy peas and gravy – the perfect home comfort. We’re pretty full by this point, but we still ordered dessert – it’s a must! While we were waiting we had a look at the drinks menu. It draws inspiration from all things botanical, with a cocktail menu boasting over 45 creations, many with a plant-based twist. There’s also an impressive offer of world famous beers and ales. We had never drunk ale before, so we tried an Icelandic ale and a German grapefruit ale. Honestly, they were nice and if you’re an ale lover then I’m

sure you would enjoy them, but I think we’ll stick to cocktails. The desserts arrived and we suddenly we felt hungry again!

We couldn’t wait to dig into the Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake, The Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough or the White Chocolate and Peanut Butter Mousse! You can tell there’s a solid theme here! The Fudge cake was lovely and very rich in flavour. The Cookie Dough was gooey and satisfying. But the Mousse left us speechless! It was delicious and looked incredible presented in a garden trowel. Finishing the night listening to the live acoustic music, I recommend you check out The Botanist in West Bridgford, if you haven’t already. The service was great and we really enjoyed ourselves. We can’t wait to go back!

Host Families required for French Students (Starting January 2018)

A local organisation in West Bridgford are looking for families in West Bridgford and neighbouring areas to look after French school children and teachers on short-stay trips of 3 and 4 days between January and June 2018. Hosting school children or teachers on a regular or occasional basis can provide you with an enjoyable and flexible way to earn extra money from your own home. It can also provide great company, shared learning experiences and an opportunity for you or your own children to develop your French language at the same time as helping the French children develop their English. The children and teachers will be out all day on trips, learning about and experiencing places of interest across Nottinghamshire so the only commitment for host families is to collect them from and drop them off at the coach point (Asda, West Bridgford) and provide them with overnight accommodation, a simple evening meal, breakfast and packed lunch. As a host family, you can choose whether to look after 2 or 3 French children or teachers, whatever best suits your level of interest and available space in your home.

CHOCOLAT CHAUD WINTER IS THE SEASON OF HOT CHOCOLATE IN FRONT OF A CRACKING FESTIVE FILM WITH A BLANKET THROWN OVER YOU ON THE SOFA, BUT IT’S ALSO THE SEASON THAT MANY OF YOU FEEL THE PINCH WHEN IT COMES TO SAVING YOUR CASH. SO, THIS EDITION I HAVE MY FAIL SAFE CHOCOLAT CHAUD RECIPE THAT WILL KNOCK THE SOCKS OFF ANY STARBUCKS OR COSTA CUP YOU WOULD BUY! • 100ML WATER • 500ML OF WHOLE MILK

1. Get breaking up those squares of chocolate into lots of little pieces, quality control taste at least one square (for scientific purposes, of course).

2. Heat your water and milk in a saucepan until it starts to bubble. 3. Drop your chocolates squares into the pan and stir continuously until all the visible chunks of chocolate have been dissolved.

Beauty

By Hollie Rowson-Dilks

ENHANCE YOUR BEAUTY WITH MYLA AESTHETICS GOING UNDER THE KNIFE SEEMS TO BE A PHRASE ON THE DECLINE RECENTLY WITH THE INVENTION OF HIGHLY POPULAR NON-SURGICAL COSMETIC PROCEDURES.

Kaytie told us, “My husband and I have worked hard to create a clean clinical environment with a homely twist. I was nervous to do this from home at first, as I was unsure how people would respond, but I am having really good feedback, often with people saying that they actually feel more relaxed here and that is exactly what I wanted”. You can also visit MYLA Aesthetics at their pop up clinics in Nottingham and at Kris Beauty in Derby.

A recent trend that continues to grow is the desire for bigger lips. With most non-surgical procedures being priced at a few hundred pounds, more and more people now want to enhance their natural beauty with the help of aesthetic treatments. Hearing great things about a pop-up clinic at our friends, CaBella on Bridlesmith Walk, we wanted to know more about Nottingham’s Kaytie Chambers, owner of MYLA Aesthetics. MYLA Aesthetics is a small business that uses Cannula techniques to provide Nurse - Lead Aesthetic treatments. Offering non-surgical treatments within a friendly and comfortable environment, Kaytie is putting a huge (and sometimes fuller) smile on all her clients faces. Treatments include: •Dermal Fillers including Lip, Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines •Advanced Dermal Fillers including Mid-face rejuvenation, Tear Trough and Cheek and Jaw enhancement •Anti-wrinkle injections •Dermaplaning MYLA Aesthetics has recently opened an all new and purpose-built clinic room at Kaytie’s home in Kirkby in Ashfield. The room offers the same robust standards as any corporate beauty business. 10 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

That way, if for whatever reason they don’t return to MYLA Aesthetics, they have a set standard of what to expect and to look for in other practitioners throughout their cosmetic journey”. MYLA Aesthetics are active supporters of the LGBT community and were recently approached by Daniel Ellison, a promoter of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender friendly services across the UK. Daniel happened across MYLA Aesthetics and was impressed by the 5-star reviews and the positive attitude that was being shown towards gay men and non-surgical treatments. Daniel suggested to Kaytie that there is still a stigma surrounding beauty treatments amongst gay people and specifically Transgender.

We learnt that a huge appealing factor for people choosing MYLA Aesthetics, is that Kaytie is a trained Nurse of 3 years. During her training at the University of Nottingham, she discovered her huge interest in non-surgical treatments and after gaining ‘crucial experience’ as a Gynaecology and Theatre Nurse, she decided to complete her Aesthetics training with the fields leading experts. With various stories appearing in the press recently regarding unhappy clients of non-surgical treatments, we asked Kaytie for her opinion on what she believes is the most important and core parts of her job. Kaytie said “I have many core values within MYLA Aesthetics. I believe that education is very important, with the non-surgical industry set to get bigger and bigger, there are so many practitioners out there to choose from. I educate my clients on products, safety, what clinical standards to expect and potential risks that surround the treatments.

MYLA Aesthetics will be working closely with Daniel to promote their services at major LGBT events.

WINTER SKIN CARE WITH THE ICY HARSH WEATHER UPON US, WE NEED TO PROTECT AND LOOK AFTER OUR SKIN MORE THAN EVER. The cold air and wind is every skins’ worst nightmare, as it drys it out, even if you have oily skin. And don’t think that only a moisturiser will protect your skin! Think about it, we layer up with clothes in the winter months so you need to do the same with your skin care.

CLEANSE This is the first and last thing everyone should do, to remove the daily grime from pollution, makeup etc. I recommend BIODERMA Hydrabio H20 Micellar Water. It removes everything including waterproof makeup without leaving your skin feeling dry or tight! It’ll leave your skin hydrated and plump. For a more intense deep cleanse, I recommend a Hot Cloth Cleanser and Liz Earle do ones for both men and women.

By Car l y Sw i ft

SERUMS

LOVE YOU LIPS!

There is so many out there for different types of skin, depending what you’re wanting to achieve from it, for example, you might want a more plump feeling, or to reduce the appearance of your pores.

It still shocks me how many people DO NOT use or even own a lip balm! CRAZY! Think about it, you eat, talk, smile and lick your lips – they go through a lot!

I recommend Vichy Idealia Life Serum – It’s perfect for all skin types, it hydrates and gives you a radiant complexion.

For me it’s the first and last thing I put on and even throughout the day, if I don’t wear a lipstick. Lips need moisture! You can get ones that leave a tint like Carmex Strawberry Lip Balm Tube with a bonus of SPF15. Or if you’re a guy, you can opt for Nivea Original Care Lip Balm, that’s clear.

Gentlemen – you need to use a serum too! My hubby uses No7 Men Protect and Perfect Intense Advanced Serum and his skin feels hydrated, fresher and smoother.

Alongside moisturising your lips don’t forget to exfoliate them, as the cold weather can make them very chapped and you need to remove the dead skin.

MOISTURISER To finish off the layering of course you need to moisturise. Regardless what skin type you are you’ll need something that’s hydrating without that greasy feel and have SPF! Yes you still need SPF all year round! I recommend La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ SPF 30. This also has the bonus of helping with any blemishes without drying out your skin. With the change of weather and shaving or wearing heavier makeup, your skin is more prone to having a breakout!

I recommend Lush’s Lip Scrubs, they come in some amazing flavours and contain jojoba oil and caster sugar, so you won’t be left with a horrible taste in your mouth, but will be left with super smooth lips. Drinking plenty of water goes without saying, you’ve got to support your skin from the inside too! Here’s to a lovely winter, complete with beautiful skin!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

There’s no need to go into hibernation just because it’s chilly outside… and there’s no better way to work off your Christmas dinner than by heading out for a wander in Nottingham’s fantastic parks.

From Saturday 9st December 2017 – Sunday 14th January 2018

Parks and open spaces can be fab for a walk in winter – especially between Christmas and New Year, when they glitter with the magic of the season. When the trees are bare you can really appreciate the amazing architecture of their branches, and it makes it a whole lot harder for wildlife to hide from you…

trch.co.uk

So, wrap up in your cosiest coat and snuggest boats and make the most of Nottingham’s awardwinning green spaces. After your walk, warm up with mulled wine and a mince pie in one of our cosy cafés at Wollaton, the Arboretum and Woodthorpe Grange. If you’re at Wollaton’s Café in the Courtyard, you might even see a reindeer…

Theatre Royal Nottingham

Don’t miss this year’s spellbinding family pantomime Beauty and the Beast starring muchloved actress and Nottingham native, Sherrie Hewson as Mrs Potty, TV and stage star Ben Richards as the Beast and featuring the welcome return of panto favourites Ben Nickless and Andrew Ryan. Dreaming of a happier life, the beautiful Belle finds herself transported to a spell-bound castle held captive by a hideous beast. Can she see beyond the monster and fall in love with her captor before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose? Or will the Beast’s selfishness cost him the world he once knew and the hand of the girl that has melted his heart? This unmissable show will be packed with all of the ingredients the audiences have come to expect from the East Midland’s biggest pantomime; lots of laughter, stunning costumes, music and plenty of magic.

PATEL COMPLETES THE SUMMER OF DREAMS

A SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR A SPORTSMAN OR WOMAN IS THEIR TEAM WINNING A CUP, OR MAYBE GAINING PROMOTION. ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, PERHAPS THEY HAVE WON THE PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARD. For one man this season, he won almost everything there was to win on a team and personal level. All-rounder Samit Patel helped Nottinghamshire win the One-Day Cup and the T20 Blast, along with promotion to Division One of the County Championship. Patel, in his benefit season with the club, was named as the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) Players’ Player of the Year and named in the PCA Team of the Year. He was also the PCA Most Valuable Player of the Year, which is based on statistics from across the season as he scored 1,820 runs and took 44 wickets in all three formats of the game. On a club level, he won Nottinghamshire’s Player of the Season as he produced the batting performances of his career in a season where he scored big runs, including back-to-back double centuries in the four-day game. 16 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

“It has been an amazing season. To win one trophy is outstanding but to win two is a monumental effort,” said Patel. “Then to get promotion to Division One just caps it all off. “You have to give the backroom staff so much credit. Peter Moores and his backroom team - I don’t think I have ever worked with better coaches. The energy he gives off to each individual is fantastic.

“Peter’s man-management is excellent. He knows exactly what he has to do to get players ready for games of cricket. He makes you belong and makes you feel you are his number one priority. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He has been fantastic. “So has Franksy (assistant head coach Paul Franks) and Picky (Andy Pick) - they’ve all been fantastic. The players have gone out and done it, and they have put in the hard work in training.”

“IT’S A GREAT HONOUR TO BE VOTED BY YOUR PEERS”

After coming through the club’s junior ranks in 2002, he has never looked back and 15 years later he is still one of the most talented players in England today. Much has been made of his lack of games for England but there is no doubting that if you want something special in a game, you turn to Samit Patel. By his own admission, the Leicester-born allrounder loves the big occasion. If you need something special in front of a packed Trent Bridge or a showpiece final, the man who will stand up and be counted is Samit Patel.

“IT HAS BEEN AN AMAZING SEASON. TO WIN ONE TROPHY IS OUTSTANDING BUT TO WIN TWO IS A MONUMENTAL EFFORT, THEN TO GET PROMOTION TO DIVISION ONE JUST CAPS IT ALL OFF.”

Fast forward to last season and Patel was the pick of the Notts bowlers with three wickets in the One-Day Cup final victory over Surrey at Lord’s and then was a major part of their T20 Blast success on Finals Day at Edgbaston. A brisk 35 with the bat in the semi-final against Hampshire was followed by the wicket of dangerman Shahid Afridi wicket with the ball of their innings and later a crucial direct-hit run out from the deep to again turn around a game which was heading away from Notts. And then in the final against Birmingham, his 64 not out helped Notts post a much higher total than looked possible in the early stages and once again performed a perfect run out from the deep to help change the game.

All those achievements were part of the reason he was voted by his peers for the prestigious players’ player award “It’s a great honour to be voted by your peers,” said Patel. It’s a great feeling and it demonstrates how well we have done as a team and individually this season. I’m a little bit surprised actually. “To be up there with a world-class player like Sanga (Kumar Sangakkara), with the amount of runs that he scored in a short amount of time is a privilege in itself.”

The supporters at Trent Bridge love him. There’s always that extra special cheers when his name is read out. He is just the type of player who makes a crowd buzz with excitement. In 2010 when Notts won the County Championship title, Patel scored a vital 96 in the final game against Lancashire as Notts got the total they needed to edge closer to the biggest domestic crown of them all. He then took the catch at slip which gained Notts the extra point they needed to win to the title. Three years later when Notts beat Glamorgan to win a one-day trophy at Lord’s, Patel took three quick wickets to turn the game when Glamorgan looked to be easing to their victory target.

LET THERE BE SHOES IF YOU HAVE NEVER VISITED PETERS SHOEMAKERS & RESTORERS, THEN TAKE IT FROM ME, YOU NEED TO! AS WELL AS AN ARRAY OF STUNNINGLY CRAFTED SHOES TO CHOOSE FROM, YOU ARE WELCOMED INTO THE STORE BY AN AMAZING TEAM, FULL OF LIFE, PERSONALITIES AND STORIES! I would even go the length to say that my visit became more of an experience. Pete’s energy is infectious and working alongside his now business partner Lilly. The pair seem to fit perfectly together and within minutes of being in their company, you can see why Peter’s has been around for as long as it has and continues to thrive. When we first arrived, Pete sat outside of his shop, polishing some beautiful boots that a lady had on. Admiring the boots, I complemented the lady and was told that they were in fact from Peter’s - Pete then told us that they were indeed a design of his and Lilly’s. Agreeing with how great they looked, and in complete surprise, Pete gave her the boots! Yes, I am still kicking myself for not arriving a few minutes earlier! Both Lilly and Pete have great stories on where it all began for them. For Pete, he was just 12 years old when he began working for his local 20 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

shoemakers. Dropping off his brother’s shoes to a local cobbler to be repaired, Pete saw the shoemaker couldn’t fit his hand into the small boots and asked if he could help. Impressed with Pete’s attitude and interest, he offered Pete a part-time job, Pete’s entry into shoemaking followed the traditional timehonoured method of passing down skills from the

craftsman to the apprentice and there began Pete’s life-long career. Lilly, who has recently been made partner, fought her way into Peter’s 4 years ago. Hearing of a apprentice role on her University forum, where she studied footwear design and found her flair, she persistently “pestered” Pete for about a month before he agreed to see her.

PETER’S IS CURRENTLY DESIGNING A BESPOKE PAIR OF BOOTS FOR OUR VERY OWN ROBIN HOOD AND HANGS AN IMPRESSIVE PAINTING OF ROBIN HOOD BY ARTIST JOE GANECH, IN THE SHOP WINDOW.

Beginning part-time, Lilly told us “she paid her dues” to win Pete over – catching 6 trains every day just to get to work and back. Building a strong relationship with Pete, he began teaching Lilly all he knew, as well as pushing her to train with 5 world class master shoemakers! Peter’s is a piece of Nottingham City Centre’s furniture and when we asked Pete why he chose Nottingham, in his cheeky way he told us “I fell in love with Robin Hood as a kid, play fighting with friends and when I thought about the city I wanted to open a shop in, it could only have been Nottingham – although I never wore the tights”. Peter’s is currently designing a bespoke pair of boots for our very own Robin Hood and hangs an impressive painting of Robin Hood by artist Joe Ganech, in the shop window. An exciting step, Peter’s will be launching their very own Ladies collection in 2018 and we are almost

BOTH LILLY AND PETE HAVE GREAT STORIES ON WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR THEM. FOR PETE, HE WAS JUST 12 YEARS OLD WHEN HE BEGAN WORKING FOR HIS LOCAL SHOEMAKERS. certain that the collection will fly off the shelves and get some much-deserved attention from the public. Crafted, sleek and stylish, the selection offers women a perfectly empowering and striking collection to choose from. To close the interview, I asked finally, what was it about Peter’s that kept them successfully standing and growing. We were told that with the base of a family business, family values have been pushed

through the business and after our visit, we absolutely believe this to be true. Passed down from the shoemaker who originally taught Pete the craft, Lilly told us “It’s always about quality and ensuring this key factor is within everything they do. “From amendments, to designing bespoke shoes and their own collection, to simply dealing with customers the way they do, this is the key to their success, alongside their extremely hard work ethic”. As a partner, Lilly will soon be solely running the Nottingham store whilst Pete sets out on his quest to expand the business to other cities. And so, to conclude, if you have never visited Peters, Shoemakers & Restorers then please do, we can guarantee you won’t regret becoming part of the family!

WHAT TO WEAR THIS WINTER I’M THAT BASIC BLOGGER WHO LOVES EVERY THING ABOUT THE AUTUMN . MY WARDROBE COMES ALIVE, I’M OUT MORE IN THOSE CRUNCHY LEAVES AND I THINK I SINGLE HANDEDLY KEEP THE PUMPKIN SPICE MARKET ALIVE DURING OCTOBER. I GOT YOUR BACK STARBUCKS.

To me, it screams sophisticated city slicker or trendy AF mum. It’s a style snip at £34.99 at New Look, make sure you hop in and try it on though as the sizing is a bit awry – I know a friend who is a size 12 that picked it up in a size 8! Pair it with an on trend checked scarf from Accessorize, £20 and a crochet bobble hat from Matalan, £6.

This style and colour is timeless, it comes back year on year and still makes the catwalks like D&G, Fendi, and Versace. At £70 currently in the sale, it’s a snip and will last you beyond this year. As you have a nice big fluffy colour, skip the scarf and head straight for some gloves to rock it with.

For my plus size babes out there, look no further than this super chic camel wrap coat with a fur trim from Very.

Nothing gives me more delight than going coat and scarf shopping when the cooler weather sets in. I scour the online shops for the perfect throw over to carry me through the rest of the year.

I love these leather gloves from M&S £17.50, opt for a funky colour to make it pop!

With so much on the high street, there’s so much to chose from – so I thought I’d show you the two perfect coats from a size 8 to a size 28! Mustard is a key colour this season, it’s come back for 2017 with a vengeance after being paraded on the Bottega and Loewe catwalks at Fashion Week. 22 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

Pair them with an on trend checked scarf from Accessorize, £20 and a crochet bobble hat from Matalan, £6. I hope you have a fantastic Winter season! Send me your photos of your #OOTD on Instagram!

MAGICAL NORTHERN LIGHTS WITH WINTER DRAWING IN, THE HEATING IS BEING TURNED UP AND WE ARE REACHING FOR THAT SCARF IN THE BACK OF THE WARDROBE. It’s not all shivers and gloom though, we at Just Journey think it’s time to focus on the amazing places that are best visited during this winter season. Skiing is of course the obvious choice, but that aside and as we

specialise in the more unusual holiday, we would like to set our focus on the wonder that is the Aurora Borealis, aka. The Northern Lights. There are a good selection of countries breaching the Arctic Circle that boast remarkable viewing positions for this natural wonder, but you must remember they are as elusive as they are spectacular. The usual destinations cover, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada and they all offer wonderous packages. These can include Ice Hotels, visits to Santa’s Lapland with festive winter villages, sleeping in glass igloos and enjoying the whole nights sky from your own bed.

By Leo Ford (Just Journey)

There are cruises that focus on this beauty, spa breaks with saunas and fresh ice pools. But if we could really peak your interest with a destination rarely visited, we have some great itineraries to Russia or even the hardly visited Greenland, where its vast and unspoilt landscape will offer some of the greatest chances for capturing that wonderous sighting of the famous Northern lights. Interested in experiencing the Northern Lights yourself or have other travel plans, you can call into Just Journey at 53 Bridgford Road or call 0115 7500 500 and speak to our travel specialists. COSY CHRISTMAS

DECORATING YOUR HOME FOR CHRISTMAS HAS TO BE MY MOST FAVOURITE THING EVER! IT GETS EVERYONE IN THE FESTIVE MOOD AND MAKES EVERY THING IN YOUR HOME LOOK EXTRA SPECIAL! Every year I have to buy at least a few new decorations, whether it’s for the tree or around the house, it’s my very own little tradition. There are so many themes out there, but the ‘Cosy Christmas’ stands out in particular this year.

26 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

It’s all about soft throws and cushions, complete with rustic elements paired with classic pieces and candles for a homely, relaxing feel. With the days getting shorter and weather getting colder, all I want to do when I get home for work is get my pyjamas on and cosy up on the sofa. These faux fur throws and cushions from NEXT (main picture above) are so soft – I just want to wrap myself up in these permanently! I have a love for Stars, so in my home there has to be star decorations, especially at Christmas.

This LED Wooden Star from Darlighting.co.uk (bottom left) would look great in any room of the house. With the soft lighting and rustic wood, it gives that cosy feeling effect. These metallic stars from Red Lilly on notonthehighstreet.com (bottom middle) are also lovely as they have holographic star lights behind festive wording, reindeer and snowflake patterns that create a soft glow. For a more rustic feel this Starry Birch Wreath from coxandcox.co.uk (bottom right) would look amazing on any door or wall. With Frosted muted glitter, its festive yet understated.

Now everyone usually has a green tree whether it’s real or fake. Why not have something a bit different? This St. Petersburg Blue Christmas Tree from John Lewis is just stunning (bottom right). It’s on the pricier side of £250 but it’s 7ft and a great investment for many Christmases to come! Even if you don’t have a fireplace in your home, everyone still has a stocking! These grey Knitted Alphabet Stockings from Matalan are so cute! (bottom left) You could have just your initial or be more creative. For only £8 each, these are a bargain.

Of all places in your home, you need a cosy bedroom! As soon as November arrives, my brushed cotton bedding is out!

Winter from The White Company is a very popular scented candle, with notes of sweet cinnamon and clove with a dash of orange.

This Nordic brushed cotton bedding from lifestylish.com (above) is adorable. With the grey and red it’s the perfect Christmas bedding.

If you fancy splashing out, Jo Malone London Incense & Embers Candle is just beautiful.

No festive decoration is complete without a few scented candles! Yankee Candle do a wide selection of scented candles, these three are my favourites for this winter; Crackling Wood Fire, Spiced White Cocoa and Festive Cocktail!

So I hope this gives you some ideas for your home this winter! Here’s to a lovely, happy and cosy Christmas!

FESTIVE FITNESS IT’S GET TING TO THAT FESTIVE TIME OF YEAR WHERE WE FEEL THE NEED TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS TO FIT INTO THAT PARTY DRESS, AND PRET TY MUCH EVERY MAGAZINE ON THE HIGH STREET WILL ADVERTISE HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT AND LOOK GOOD AT CHRISTMAS PARTIES. I’m a newly qualified personal trainer and it drives me mad when I see all the ‘fad diets’. I have struggled with my weight all my teenage and early adult years. At my biggest I was 20 stone, until one day decided to change this road I was on. I have now lost 10 stone!

I don’t believe in cutting foods you love out of your life, as food is a huge part of our happiness and this is no quick fix. We need to find something that we can stick to for life, as it’s all about moderation and portion control.

When it comes to weight loss it’s about eating in a deficit, but that number is different for all of us. So many people pluck a number from thin air or copy their friends plan and then they wonder why it doesn’t work for them.

We can have a slice of cake, just not the whole cake. Remember, some foods feed the body and some foods feed the soul. The last thing you want is to miss out on social occasions, because of your ‘diet’ that attitude just won’t last in the long run.

My biggest advice this festive period is enjoy your social occasions and make healthy choices in between.

I’m often asked what type of exercise someone should do and my answer is simple ‘What do you enjoy doing?’ Exercise isn’t punishment, it should be something you look forward to.

I can tell you first hand, nothing works better than eating a healthy wholesome diet and exercising a few times a week.

WE CAN HAVE A SLICE OF CAKE , JUST NOT THE WHOLE CAKE, REMEMBER SOME FOODS FEED THE BODY AND SOME FOODS FEED THE SOUL!

When it comes to weight loss, we automatically start to think of what we need to cut out of our diet. However, I think it’s about adding things in, eating more veggies. Fruit helps a lot and eating more whole foods rather than processed foods.

Don’t get me wrong, even I have days where I feel less motivated and that’s normal, but if you ever find yourself hating your workout you need to change it. If I’m writing a training plan for someone, I will always make sure it suits their needs in health and happiness.

If we add more nutrients in, we naturally have less room for the less nutrient - dense foods.

We must remember we are all individual, so what worked for me won’t always work for you.

28 | IN Nottingham | Christmas 17

Don’t crash diet for 8 weeks, then go off plan for 3 weeks, to end up back at square one. You’ll then want to jump on the fad New Year diets. My motto is eat good, move more and feel great. It’s also a busy time of year and we often find ourselves going a million miles an hour trying to fit so much in our schedules. So you have to make sure you give yourself some ‘me time’, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day or 1 hour a week, where you can sit and just take some time to clear your mind, after all, health comes as a package in mind and body. Make sure you get good sleep and rest when your body tells you to, as we often neglect these things more than our diet, yet they are the crucial foundations to living a healthy happy life.

For more advice on fitness tips and meal ideas, email me at Healthy_Happy_Me@outlook.com. @Healthy_Happy_Me
