PITCHER AND PIANO SITUATED IN THE HEART OF DERBY IS PITCHER AND PIANO, A MODERN-CONTEMPORARY RESTAURANT WITH A BRITISHINSPIRED MENU. Their menu is brimming with British favourites as well as contemporary dishes, from sausages and mash to crispy halloumi burgers and crispy chilli beef salads.

6 | IN Derby | September • October 18

As we walked into this Derby gem we received a warm welcome from both the staff and the cosy interiors, with ambient lighting, comfy seating booths and twinkling fairy lights making for either a romantic night with your other half or a chilled evening with friends.

The roof terrace is the perfect getaway for a sunny day with friends over cocktails, hearty food and possible puddings. As you walk up onto the terrace you’ll see a multitude of beautiful plants and vibrant décor, making for that all so pleasant visit and happier atmosphere to be enjoyed with loved ones.

IN Magazine were kindly invited to Pitcher and Piano Derby to see what they had to offer their customers.

It was a beautiful summers day in Derby, and so we took the opportunity to soak in the sun from their picturesque roof terrace with a chilled glass of cloudy lemonade, which was wonderfully refreshing on this hot day. Once seated we began to choose our starters, we decided on the deliciously tempting halloumi fries with jalapeños, spring onions and spicy Korean ketchup as well as the peri-peri chicken skewers, juicy and tender, complimented by the subtle garlic mayo.

The halloumi fries were perfectly crisp on the outside and the cheese was soft and warm which just melts in your mouth! After our scrumptious starters we glanced over the mains, with so many mouth-watering choices we struggled to say the least. A good ten minutes later with the help of a friendly member of staff we asked for the BBQ Pork Ribs and the P&P Burger; one bite into the ribs and the pork so tender it just fell off the bone. The burger, 6oz of pure beef accompanied by maple-glazed bacon, lettuce, onions and other tasty flavours!

Both were meat options; however, Pitcher & Piano do have a handful of vegetarian alternatives like the mixed bean tagine, a compilation of colourful vegetables from butternut squash to cauliflower and spinach.

If you still have room after your starter and main meal, check out their dessert menu. Whether you are craving an ice cream, brownie, or Eton Mess (with a twist), P&P have it all! Perhaps a hot beverage is the perfect finale to your meal, choose from a range of drink from a classic americano or a mocha – so delicious!

As you can see we had a wonderful time at Pitcher and Piano, where we explored an incredible range of flavours and tastes! We highly recommend that you visit when you are next in Derby centre.

An event celebrating local produce in Derby, enjoy the best of the season at the country food and drink fair, with lots to taste and buy.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is probably the greatest horror story ever told. Published exactly 200 years ago and written when she was just 19. This gripping production combines both the story of Frankenstein with the novel’s creation. In 1814, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary had scandalised society by eloping together. They were not married. Or at least, not to each other. In the summer of 1816 they escaped to Switzerland. These great writers, Romantics and lovers decided upon a competition – who could write the best horror story? Thus Frankenstein was born. And history was created.

QUAD CELEBRATES ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY QUAD OPENED TO THE PUBLIC ON 26TH SEPTEMBER 2008, AND THIS YEAR THE VENUE CELEBRATES ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY, WITH SPECIAL FILMS,EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS PLANNED.

16 | IN Derby | September • October 18

Since opening a decade ago, QUAD has welcomed over 3.5 million visitors through its doors. As well as a diverse cinema programme packed with independent, Hollywood and foreign language titles, QUAD has shown over 70 exhibitions. In 2004 QUAD established FORMAT International Photography Festival, which is now one of the UK's leading international contemporary festivals of photography and related media.

QUAD also established an outdoor film festival, Summer Nights which has now expanded to 13 heritage locations across the UK, and is planned to expand even further in 2019. Over 30,000 tickets were sold for Summer Nights in 2018 alone, and the festival – produced by QUAD’s in-house digital production agency TECH:SQUAD – involved over 40 screenings in heritage locations across the country.

This autumn TECH:SQUAD is partnering with Derby Cathedral on an innovative programme of cinema in the unique surroundings of the Cathedral nave, including Sister Act and The Life of Brian on November 21st and festive films including Elf and A Muppet Christmas Carol on December 22nd. Adam Buss, QUAD CEO said: “QUAD is a charity and cultural hub in the heart of Derby, and nothing makes us prouder than creating new experiences, memories and skills with the people that visit and support our cinema, workshops, exhibitions and café bar. The past ten years has flown by, but we hope we’ve stayed true to our aims and ambitions which we haven’t changed since opening." "We always wanted to provide an accessible, friendly and exciting venue that is a creative beacon for those in Derby and a pioneering landmark from those outside the city. We hope, in short, that we’ve achieved something which has been much more than the sum of its parts. Here’s to the next ten years!”

This year QUAD will revisit one of its opening exhibitions, Bill Drummond’s The17: Slice Through Derby, which offers a chance to see friends, family and colleagues among the 1,700 people who took part in a unique performance event. In 2008, prior to QUAD’s opening, 100 groups of seventeen people from Derby’s community took part in The17: Slice Through Derby, led by artist and musician Bill Drummond. One hundred groups from all areas of the city were recruited to take part in the project, which involved singing one note together for five minutes, then having a group photograph and video portrait taken. These 100 separate sound recordings were mixed together to create one huge piece of choral music. The 100 group photographs were on show on QUAD walls and digital screens for the venue’s opening 3 months.

Photo Credit: Charlotte Jopling and Graham Lucas Commons

The17 Slice Through Derby: 10 Years On is a chance to see these images once again, on display in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces from Saturday 25th August to Sunday 21st October. In QUAD cinema, The Best of 10 film season includes titles chosen from each year that the venue has been open, including Drive, The Artist, Sicario and The Handmaiden. The season takes place between August and December. Alongside the ten films, QUAD has asked the public to nominate their favourite films ever shown at the venue, one of which will be shown as the final, eleventh choice. STRUCTURE NOT BOUNDARIES

HOW ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY CAN TURN POTENTIAL INTO PROGRESS.

BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF! If your goal is to lose weight , find out why, dig deep and be honest with yourself. If its for confidence, why? What is it that weight-loss will give you? If you find out what your drive is, you are more likely to stick to it! Aesthetics will only get you so far on your journey, after that your drive has to come from motivation and discipline. This means looking at your behaviours, especially around food and daily activity and making some sustainable adjustments that can create a healthier lifestyle that’s suits you.

SHARE YOUR GOALS If your goal is to lose a few pounds, its proven that you are more likely to achieve those goals if you surround yourself with like-minded people and a good support system.

MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA YOUR FRIEND

Thousands of people scroll through Instagram or Facebook following their fave celebrities and fitness pros. But does that make you feel good about yourself? When in doubt, don't start comparing yourself! They have been airbrushed, marketed, sponsored etc they are not the average Joe! So unfollow! Yes, I said it! This means nothing to them they probably wont even notice. Instead, fill your feed with posts that will feed your soul. Things that make you smile and give you a push in the right direction, can make a difference! Secondly post your success’, no matter how small. Your friends and those who support you can then give you that extra motivation which will spur you on. It sounds small, but it works!

IF IT CAN BE MEASURED, IT CAN BE TRACKED. MAKE TECHNOLOGY WORK FOR YOU! Invest in yourself! If youre not prepared to invest in a PT at the moment get yourself a tracking device. If you think you eat healthy and are active but nothing is happening, a steps or activity tracker can highlight possible causes for your lack of progress. Majority of the time I hear from clients that they only eat healthy foods and walk everywhere, but nothings happening! If calories in vs calories out, is the key to weight loss, how do you know you're burning more than you consume? If youre not aware of a) the amount of calories you are consuming and b) the amount of calories you are burning daily in and outside of the gym, it's hard to know. I would recommend using the free myfitnesspal app to get you started and a fitness tracker to set and monitor your daily activity goals.

One way I encourage clients to do this is to set up a private facebook group or whatsapp group where they can share achievements, funny memes, recipes they’ve found, chat and most importantly check in with one another for support. Accountability is key when creating new goals and behaviours. For example, setting a day where they all upload their progress pictures, weights and measurements and reflect on how their weeks has gone; what hasn’t worked and why, what has worked and how! 20 | IN Derby | September • October 18

EXPERTS IN STYLE AND COMFORT Discover Frank Knighton, the region’s sofa specialist! When it comes to retail, expertise and experience make all the difference – especially with major purchases like sofas. That’s why Frank Knighton ticks all the boxes. It’s one of those hidden gems that become successful mostly through word-of-mouth recommendation by satisfied customers. As a proper local family business, they have three showrooms in the East Midlands (Nottingham, Derby and Ilkeston). “Despite all the competition from the big boys, we’ve been successful by sticking to the same four principles: honest pricing, expert service, hand-picking the finest sofas from leading brands, and creating our own bespoke range so you can buy direct from the manufacturer to make significant savings,” reveals managing director Richard Knighton. Frank Knighton custom-makes sofas to meet the precise needs of customers: from the colour to the fabric, the exact size that fits a particular space and, of course, budget.

Trained staff help choose the right colours, fabrics and lumbar support. Leading designer brands Alongside their own premium bespoke sofas, Frank Knighton stocks many leading designer brands including G Plan, Natuzzi Editions, Rom and Parker Knoll – from must-have colours

and fabrics to more traditional materials; innovative new designs to retro favourites, and classic Italian to modern Scandinavian styles. Frank Knighton is also now the leading regional retailer for the increasingly popular La-Z-Boy range. Exclusive designs If you’re looking for something truly distinctive, an exciting range of bespoke FK sofas is handcrafted with pride at the company’s Ilkeston workshop – so you buy direct from the manufacturer. Mainframe Presents... By Hana York

PITCH PERFECT WHETHER PITCHING FOR A PROJECT OR PITCHING YOURSELF, SELLING OURSELVES DOESN’T COME NATURALLY TO MANY OF US. HERE ARE FIVE KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER NEXT TIME YOU'RE FACED WITH A PITCH. SHORT IS SWEET You need to be able to explain exactly who you are, what you do and how that could be interesting to the person listening in just a few sentences.

SELLING YOURSELF We’d all like to believe that our business is totally unique, that our USP’s are unmatched, but often in business that’s just not the case. How then does anyone stand out from the crowd and win any work? Often, it’s all down to how you gel as people. Yes, you need to be professional, yes you need to demonstrate how you’d get the job done but don’t forget to show your human side!

SOLVE A PROBLEM Most pitches arise because of someone needing to solve a problem. You need to present a solution, however never be afraid to question the root cause of the problem –for example - does the client really need a totally new website (as per the brief) or do they really need to look at how they handle enquiries coming into the existing website.

GETTING OTHERS TO SELL YOU References and reviews have power. You saying you're great is one thing but other people saying you're great is far more powerful. Make sure you're ready to talk about and demonstrate how you’ve already helped others. Encourage prospective clients to talk to your existing clients; it shows your confident in doing a good job and maintaining a good ongoing relationship.

Mainframe We know that some of the UK’s most talented digital & creative businesses call Derby and Derbyshire home. Mainframe is a community of those people, sharing their talent, knowledge and inspiration.

A few moments may be all the time you have to impress someone so make it count. Even if you do have longer, it’s a clear and confident way to begin the conversation.

Based at QUAD and funded via the European Regional Development Fund and Art’s Council England; we host free monthly meetup’s covering topics from the inspirational, to business growth to the downright futuristic and forward thinking.

IT IS A CONVERSATION

Mainframe is part of the Big House, a collaboration providing sector specific support; making it easier for digital & creative businesses to understand and access the free help available in our region.

Knowing when to stop talking and start listening is just as critical as know what to say in the first place! Remember, a conversation is two-way, no-one likes to feel bombarded with information. Plus, if you listen properly you’ll often hear just the information you need to help clinch the sale.

SEW YOUR OWN WAY WE ALL HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF, AND IN A WORLD OF ‘FAST FASHION’, IT’S EASY TO FILL YOUR WARDROBE WITH UNWORN, IMPULSE PURCHASES. In an effort to reduce both spending and environmental impact, I set myself the challenge of not buying any new clothes. If I wanted something new - I would have to make it for myself. Having only started sewing in March, this was a slightly daunting prospect, but one filled with possibility. The sewing world is a slightly eccentric but endlessly charming place of (mostly) female solidarity. One of the things I love about sewing is the lineage of it, the tradition of one generation teaching the next - using old machines, and discovering vintage patterns.

24 | IN Derby | September • October 18

My Mum taught me to knit and sew as a child and I confess I was a reluctant student, but 20 years later thought it was worth giving it another go. It is not all retro though, there is a growing community of indie pattern designers, creating modern silhouettes and embracing collaboration and pattern hacking. Nottingham has a fantastic network of independent fabric and haberdashery shops that have been a joy to explore. When you venture into a sewing shop, the staff without fail take the time to discuss what you need and why you need. When I’ve been stuck on a technical aspect with a project and YouTube has failed me, the women in The Sewing Box on Carlton Square have had all the answers! I’ve enjoyed making wardrobe staples, such as dungarees and pinafore dresses.

High waisted shorts have become a particular favourite pattern, as I never find shorts that fit quite the way I want them too, and of course, this fantastic weather has called out for a sun-dress to drink gin and tonics in! So why not give it a go? It doesn’t matter if the final result is a bit rough round the edges, you don’t live in an Instagram filter, and it will be a hundred times better because you made it – even if it’s terrible, especially if it’s terrible – because it’s yours. The pride of completing your first wearable garment is incredible. And yes several months on the finishing of my seams is still a bit shoddy, and the hems aren’t that straight. But, that doesn’t really matter. Wearing something you made yourself, truly makes you feel a million dollars – and I encourage you to try, trust me it’s worth it.

Travel By Leo Ford (Just Journey)

VIETNAM – A COUNTRY OF CONTRASTS THIS AMAZING COUNTRY THAT HAS BEEN RAVISHED BY WAR IN VERY MODERN HISTORY IS NOW ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR ASIA DESTINATIONS.

Could it be the history, the beautiful white sand beaches, the exquisite cuisine, or just the excellent value for money? Why don’t you decide for yourself! It is very much a country of contrasts, from the old communist state of the north, the ancient medieval wonderland of the centre, and the capitalist south. It is a fascinating mix.

26 | IN Derby | September • October 18

If you're not as interested in the history, Vietnam also has stunning beaches and wildlife and is all connected by one of the world's most famous railways: The Reunification Express.

When you throw the great cities into the mix, you can see why it's become a must-see destination. Our tours and suggestions are as ever always tailored to you, but we would suggest an itinerary that starts in the north in the capital city Hanoi. Expose all your senses to one of Asia’ most manic cities, all as you cross the road and avoid the thousands of mopeds zipping past. It’s all worth it though as next we set sail into the tranquillity of Halong Bay on an overnight cruise on a traditional Junk boat. The images of the limestone rock formations and the emerald waters will stay with you for a lifetime. Our journey then continues inland to an area less visited, at Just Journey we try to create unique experiences for our clients and one of these would be to head to the area around the town of Ninh Binh.

Famous for the nearby meandering Tam Coc river and its path through the hillsides and rice paddies. Take a bamboo boat (Sampan) ride on the river and visit the caves and rainforest of nearby Cuc Phoung National Park. Hop on the Reunification Express for an overnight journey to Hoi An where some of the country’s best beaches greet you for a well earned break and some relaxation time. This area offers a host of opportunities; explore the ancient citadel of the Imperial City in Hue, reflect on the modern history of the Vietnam War by visiting the DMZ and Viet Cong tunnels, and after all this sit back and relax on one of the beautiful beaches and relax. For more details check out Just Journey's Route 66 Fly Drive offer on their website justjourney.co.uk/package/route-66/ or contact them at contact@justjourney.co.uk or on 0115 7500 500. TIMELESS TREND OF A BYGONE ERA CLASSIC ELEGANCE IS NEVER OUT OF DATE REGARDLESS OF ITS HERITAGE AND THE ART DECO ‘LOOK’ OR CONCEPT HAS REMAINED A FIRM FAVOURITE FOR INTERIORS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

30 | IN Derby | September • October 18

It’s a very easy way of introducing glamour into a room without it being too girlie or feminine. Whilst the art deco influence in general has a very opulent, lavish feel, it can easily be introduced into a more minimalist 21st century scheme by applying some of the principles it follows. An easy rule to use to create an art deco effect is symmetry and geometry. This wooden media unit available online from Swoon Editions applies this rule.

The metal insets form sleek geometric shapes and with the angled spindle legs it has the suggestion of art deco whilst being a contemporary piece of furniture. Prestigious Textiles, who are a great favourite of mine for cushions, curtains, blinds and upholstery, have put together a complete range of deco inspired fabrics showcasing the shapes and style of the era. And if you don’t want to invest too heavily into the look, scatter cushions are an extremely simple way to introduce the idea.

Similar to the cushions, rugs can really anchor a space can bring a subtle hint of ‘deco’ design too. Created in a contemporary grey, this rug from made.com, easily sits in a modern scheme. There is an abundance of crystal and glass lighting available which is heavily influenced by this decadent time.

With the insets of stained glass and lead frames it is a classic nod to the concept of Art Deco and all the charm it delivers.

This stunning glass ceiling pendant from Ocean Lighting is available in clear or amber glass and would provide a real wow factor in any room. And finally, as far as interior design goes, I always feel a room is not complete without a mirror. As well as the obvious functionality, a mirror should be a real statement. It can create the illusion of more space in a room and bounce the light around. To combine glamour and opulence, this sleek, sophisticated Gatsby inspired, over mantle wall mirror brings real personality.
