JACK RABBITS AFTER A COLD AND WINDY START TO THE DAY IN DERBY, WE DECIDED TO WARM UP IN JACK RABBITS KITCHEN ON QUEEN STREET. With a warm and friendly welcome, we were told to grab a seat wherever we fancied so we sat by the window. Jack Rabbits is the perfect place to watch the world go by and with the beautiful view of Derby Cathedral just out of the window, it’s certainly a lovely lunch spot. One of the first things you notice when you walk in is how lovely and homely Jack Rabbits is with their warm and rustic interior. Whilst waiting for our lunches, our drinks arrived on a cute wooden tray. A skinny flat white and a pink lemonade. If you’re a coffee lover like ourselves, you need to try the coffee at Jack Rabbits! It’s wonderfully hand roasted and full of flavour. With an extensive list of coffees, syrups, and milk substitutes, they’ll create the perfect coffee suited to you. On the other hand, the pink lemonade was scrumptiously sweet and refreshing, and something we’d recommend for you to try if you’re not a fan of warm drinks. It was then our lunches came and wow they looked amazing!

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU NOTICE WHEN YOU WALK IN IS HOW LOVELY AND HOMELY JACK RABBITS IS WITH THEIR WARM AND RUSTIC INTERIOR. 6 | IN Derby | March 18

I ordered the Halloumi & Harissa Roasted Peppers which was mouth-wateringly good. The fresh freekeh salad with pistachios and pomegranates gave it the perfect crunch and sweetness, which complimented the warm halloumi and harissa roasted peppers. A must try when you go in and it’s perfect for vegetarians too.

IT WAS THEN OUR LUNCHES CAME AND WOW THEY LOOKED AMAZING! We also ordered the New York Deli Bagel and all we can say is how amazing it was. With pastrami, swiss cheese, Russian salad and gherkins on the top, it was a great continental twist and one of the best bagels we’ve tasted in a very long time. Jack Rabbits is known for their coffee, homemade cakes and biscuits, so we knew we had to try some. We ordered the Chocolate Brownie and Cranberry & Pistachio Cookie with another skinny flat white and caramel latte – told you that we love coffee!

By Soph ie

C o ll e y

The Chocolate Brownie was full of flavour and undoubtedly one of the best homemade brownies we’ve tasted. The sweetness of the cranberries in the cookie against the crunchy bake created a delicious end to our lunch. So after a gloomy start to the day, we left feeling very happy and full. A shame we couldn’t have stayed longer, but off back into the rain we went. Next time you’re out and about in Derby, I recommend you give Jack Rabbits a try – you certainly won’t be disappointed.

A DELICIOUS END TO OUR LUNCH

COLON HYDROTHERAPY

rot h n Hyd o l o C od herwo S ( d r o f e t St a f By Ja n AS A WESTERN SOCIETY WE ARE STARTING TO REALISE HOW IMPORTANT THE GUT REALLY IS, WE ARE WHAT OUR GUT IS. The bowel has a big part to play in keeping us healthy and around 80 % of our immunity is from our gut. It is linked to all areas of our body, when it’s working well it is linked to controlling our weight. It can also influence our mood and atributes to general wellness. The gut is as important as our brains and heart, yet as a nation we may be still too embarrassed to ask vital questions about it. The Gut microbiome or our individual gut plan of good “gut flora” or bacteria, as we commonly know it as, play a key part in obesity, allergies and depression. With the ever increasing incidence of gastrointestinal diseases and symptoms soaring in the western world today, such as diverticulitis, colitis, constipation to name but a few, I see clients who come to me for alternatives. They are sometimes at their wits end and feel conventional medicine hasn’t worked for them.

put people back on right track to good intestinal health. Not only do I provide a consultation and the treatment, if we need to go further in our investigations, I am able to provide comprehensive further testing. Colon hydrotherapy is an ancient therapy and practised long before conventional medicine. In the western society Colon hydrotherapy is becoming more widely known and more accessible to people as they become more interested in their health in general, in particular intestinal health. Celebritries have it regularly to keep them healthy, Princess Diana was said to attribute her treatments to her clear complexion.

WHY JANET IS DIFFERENT:

Services include; Colon Hydrotherapy, which is a gentle cleanse of the large intestine by water gently passing along the colon. Many clients visit me, to seek relief from their constipation, IBS or just want a wellness cleanse. I also provide various Colon cleanses during treatment such as liver or kidney cleanse and even parasite cleanses for people who may have contracted parasite infestations, to help the body detoxify.

That’s why at my clinic everyone is an individual to me, I take time in my consultation to provide for the individual person. I am happy to provide after care and answer any bowel problem questions after treatment, often people go off track and just need some advice.

Given that I am medically trained and knowledgeable of the field, I try to keep my prices reasonable, so it is more affordable to everyone. As often more than one treatment may be needed if the bowel is very congested.

We often have busy and stressful lives, where lack of exercise, not eating the right things or genetics can really have an effect on our gut. I can help to

People not only visit if they feel ill or have a problem, they visit me for wellness and as sense of wellbeing.

Her new biography of Jane Austen will be published in May next year and takes at new look at Jane Austen’s life from the perspective of her bi-centenary. It considers what home meant to Jane, and tells the story through the rooms, spaces, possessions and places which mattered to her. Dispelling the myth of the cynical, lonely spinster, Lucy instead offers us a witty and passionate woman of her time, who refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy. Weddings By Caroline Walsh (The Wedding Alchemist)

PLANNING YOUR BIG DAY PLANNING YOUR WEDDING DAY CAN BE REALLY DAUNTING, BUT DON’T WORRY, IN MAGAZINE GOT IN TOUCH WITH THE LOVELY CAROLINE FROM THE WEDDING ALCHEMIST! WE ASKED HER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HER EXPERIENCE WITH HER CLIENTS, ALONG WITH ADVICE! WHAT WAS THE MOST UNIQUE WEDDING YOU EVER PLANNED? I have styled some interesting weddings but I have also provided bespoke elements for weddings also. The most unusual of these so far was black skull table plans. These were great fun to make and the client made them look awesome. They got married in a zoo and the venue looked both classy and quirky with a black and white theme with some touches of macabre it was great.

12 | IN Derby | March 18

WHY DID YOU GET INTO THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF IT? I would think like most people, by doing my own. I am a qualified interior architect and designer and I love everything about making spaces beautiful. I also love making and creating things and after trying my hand at everything from flowers to decor for my own wedding. I spent some time making fabric flowers but really thinking about what I love I realised styling is what I do best!

I loved doing my own wedding but it was a stressful process. Having to deal with everything on the day meant I did not have time to relax on the day and share a moment and a glass of fizz with my family and friends. I realise this is something I could do to take the stress out of others planning their big day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF PLANNING A WEDDING? Seeing the finished product and knowing that everything is as it should be ready for the couple and their guests to enter and have a great time.

I love all elements of the process but seeing all the hard work result in a beautiful space and a great wedding day is the best feeling. I am also a massive organiser so planning things is fun for me (sad I know!).

WHAT’S THE COST OF THE AVERAGE WEDDING YOU PLAN AND DO YOUR CLIENTS STICK TO THEIR BUDGET? This can vary massively. There is a bit of a misconception that styling is expensive but because I also offer a huge range of hire elements sometimes it can work out cheaper than doing everything yourself! For me, prices for styling and hire for certain items start from £25 per table and can be customised for a range of budgets. The best thing is that I can control the budget elements and purchase on the clients behalf.

They have access to the spreadsheet to see how the process is going at any time. Using trade discounts and inside know how I make sure the client gets the most out of their budget.

WHAT IS THE 2018 TREND FOR WEDDINGS? I tend to work more with people who don’t follow trends. I would say that more than a trend the new ethos that is becoming ever more popular is to do what you want! People are becoming more confident to make their wedding unique to them and to only include the elements and traditions they feel comfortable with. From unicorns, superhero’s, environmentally conscious, festival inspired, whatever they want, they can have and that is where I come in. I specialise in anything that is a little bit more unique and I can source or can create elements by hand and work with a range of styles to really represent my clients personality and requirements.

3 TOP TIPS ON STARTING TO PLAN A WEDDING… 1. Be true to who you are as a couple and what you want for your wedding, don’t be pressured by outside influences. 2. Don’t try to do everything yourself, pick the

few small things that matter most to you and give those your all.

3. Make sure to give yourself time on the day to

‘be in the moment’ and let others take the weight off your shoulders.

Every bride’s dream dress is different and with each new bride is a fabulous new personality I get to know and spend time working with to create the perfect design. Incorporating lots of aspects to create the dress; from silhouette and fabric to detail and colour as well as taking into account the client’s personality and wedding theme. There are so many ‘ingredients’ involved in putting together the absolute perfect creation for each bride I work with and every recipe is always different and always exciting. 14 | IN Derby | March 18

WHY GET A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS?

Brides not only want to look like a goddess but they want to feel like one too, so having a dress that’s made to order is the way to get exactly what you want.

Whether its your first wedding or not there aren’t many times in a woman’s life where the perfect dress or outfit is so important.

It isn’t just about getting the perfect design it’s also about it being cut and made to fit you properly and perfectly. The making of a unique dress creates a story as part of your wedding and part of your family history as wedding dresses are often passed through generations as they hold such sentimental value. On many occasions I have been given old pieces of lace or a grandmothers wedding dress to use as part of the new dress and that can form a really special part of having something unique made. It’s an opportunity to have exactly what you want down to the last detail.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BESPOKE AND ‘OFF THE PEG’? There is nothing wrong with an off the peg dress, there are some beautiful ones out there and having a dress custom made isn’t for everyone. Many brides do indeed find their dream dress ready to go. But so many brides don’t and that’s where bespoke is your answer. But also having a dress made for you means you are investing in the local economy, local skills and small independent businesses and you get exactly what you want too.

Off the peg dresses have several profit layers attached and you can’t guarantee it will have been ethically manufactured and of course it won’t be unique. A bespoke wedding dress doesn’t just have to mean big budgets, often designers like myself take a clients budget into account when looking at designs and fabrics.

HOW LONG DOES A BESPOKE DRESS TAKE TO MAKE? I’ve had clients come to me two years before their wedding, I have also had clients come to me a few months before. 6 months to a year is a good time as its planning in all the fittings but often it can be quite a flexible process because its all happening locally. Many dress shops instil fear into brides if they don’t order their dress 12 months before the day and its often because it takes months to have the dresses shipped in from the Far East because they will build up their orders to get one big shipment over. So these crazy time frames on dresses have come from that.

HOW DO I WEAR MY DRESS AGAIN? Wedding dresses do tend to be a lot of money for one wear, but if you box clever with your dress you could wear it again. If your dress is made of silk it can be dyed a different colour and made into a cocktail dress. Having a two piece corset and skirt means you can keep wearing the corset for nights out or anniversaries.

It may be that you don’t go for a traditional colour wedding dress and then you have something that could work as evening wear for future events. Or if you have children your dress may become christening gowns or upcycled a few decades later for another family wedding dress. There are lots of possibilities if you do want more use out of it and often your wedding dress maker can remodel it for you after the big day.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER IF I HAVE A DRESS MADE? I have clients who come with clear ideas of what they want and others who come with no idea and we always get their with the perfect design one way or another. Some advice to brides when going along to fittings: take suitable underwear, always wear the same bra and think early on about the bra you may wear on the day under your dress if it isn’t boned. Also take shoes a similar heel height to the ones you will wear on the day and, as you get your accessories, take along those along too. This will help your dress designer no end. Finally, have fun with it! This should be a fun process and not stressful.

BEST MAN SPEECH EVEN BEAR GRYLLS RECKONS A BEST MAN SPEECH IS ONE OF THE HARDEST THINGS A BLOKE CAN COME UP AGAINST. YES, A FELLA WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED ROUND THE BRITISH ISLES ON A JET SKI AND DRINKS HIS OWN WEE, THINKS WEDDING SPEECHES ARE DIFFICULT. And despite the plethora of online templates and advice, delivering a best man speech is not getting any easier. A decade ago you could wing it. You could Google some gags and expect granny hadn’t heard them before. You could roll out the Powerpoint and embarrass the groom with some childhood photos and guests would think you’d made an effort. These days, not so much. The best man speech is still the most eagerly awaited but they’re often meet with good-natured groans rather than genuine laughter. They’ve become a caricature, with the traditional characteristics exaggerated to grotesque effect. Seriously, that line about the honeymoon and the groom ‘going to Bagnor for two weeks’. Or the ‘humorous’ fake telegram from the football team saying they found the groom useless in most positions but wish the bride good luck. Cringe. Cheesy gags and meaningless one-liners is not what a best man speech is meant to be. So here’s Speechy’s guide to writing a speech fit for a wedding in 2018. Take note comrade.

HUMOUR If you can take your jokes and use them in a speech about another groom, then you’re doing something wrong. Yes, we’ll allow you a few one-liners to break the ice but other than that, you’re on your own. Certainly take inspiration from other best man speeches, but only the good ones. Check out how others have taken the personality of their mate and used that as the basis of their humour. As Homer Simpson so sagely says ‘It’s funny because it’s true’. 16 | IN Derby | March 18

Start thinking about the things that make the groom unique. Everyone’s a nut-job, so what are the traits that his friends and family will recognise as truly ‘him’. Ask yourself lots of questions - what’s his worst habit (wearing skinny jeans), what’s his guilty pleasure (Dire Straits), what might he love more than his bride (Abduls kebabs). You get the idea. Once you have good content to play with, the comedy should flow. Don’t be scared to take the mick, it’s how British blokes show we care. Do, however, be scared of mentioning exes, stag do tales, in jokes and anything crude (innuendo’s fine, dirty isn’t). Also don’t tell any stories that might mean your mate needs to apologise to his wife.

FIND A THEME This is how your speech goes into the Premier League. Rather than just a trail of anecdotes, think of a way to theme your speech and tie everything together. This way you’ll capture the audience and no one will be checking their Whatsapp under the table. So how do you think of your theme? Think about the groom’s personality traits. For example: •Is he a pseudo-intellectual? Use quotes from great thinkers throughout history to contrast with your mate. •Is he a bit of a geezer? Present the bride with an insider’s guide to understanding how his blokebrain works. •Is he a football fan? Give a post-match analysis on his courtship with the bride and predict how well he’ll score as a husband The theme doesn’t need to be overly clever to work.

It should reflect the sort of girl she is – even if it is a feisty Pinot-fiend with an adult-addiction to Monster Munch!

PROVE, DON’T TELL Cut the clichés that most best men fall victim to. When it comes to ‘the nice bit’, rather than use adjectives, make sure you provide the evidence. Don’t just say ‘he’s been there for you’, explain that he picked you up from the Hogs Head at 2am when every taxi refused to take you home. Tell everyone how he helped you get to grips with pensions and confess that you still owe him fifty quid. Highlight the real reasons he’s a top bloke and your speech will sound refreshing.

PROPS Don’t bother. Most props just feel tired these days. Write a good speech and you won’t need them. One bit of kit you might need is a microphone. Check the groom has hired one if the acoustics of the venue require it. So many speeches are ruined simply because people can’t heard them.

VIDEOS It’s a total cop out from a delivery point of view but if you’ve got the skills and resources to invest in creating a cool video, then we’re all for it. Reconstruct moments from your past exploits together, visit the seminal locations from your teenage years, interview past teachers or ‘witnesses’ to bad behaviour. There’s lots of good best man videos online but remember, like the traditional speech, less is often more. Even with a kickass soundtrack, you still want a duration well under ten minutes - though, in reality, that would take A LOT of filming! We hope this advice helps you nail it.

BIG UP THE BRIDE In 2018 the bride needs to be more than an afterthought and you need to say more than she’s ‘made your mate happy’ and ‘looks beautiful today’. If you don’t know her well, then make an effort to do some digging. Find out about her and reflect that in your tribute to her. Don’t feel you need to be overly gushing or pretend she’s a perfect princess. A good tribute can still be affectionately humorous.

WEDDING CAKE TRENDS YOUR WEDDING CAKE IS NO LONGER JUST A TASTY TREAT TO BE ENJOYED AT THE END OF THE DAY – THIS YEAR THE CAKE IS VITAL PART OF THE THEME! MORE AND MORE COUPLES ARE MAKING THEIR CAKES A TRUE CENTREPIECE TO THE WHOLE THEME,INCORPORATING ONE PARTICULAR ASPECT FROM THEIR DAY IN A MEMORABLE WAY WHETHER IT BE THE WEDDING DRESS, THE BRIDAL BOUQUET AND THE WEDDING STATIONERY ITSELF. MARBLE A mainstay of last year, marble isn’t going anywhere. A marble cake is perfect for the bride who wants a fresh take on a classic white cake, adding a flash of colour to the traditional approach. Marble works wonderfully with another strong trend for this year - metallics

MATCHING FAVOURS

LACE

Why stop at cake? This seems to be the attitude of a lot of couples (and I’m sure appreciative guests). Edible favours to match the cake seem set to be a favourite this year. Perfect for a classy little take away treat for guests, or even as an edible place card.

With lace dresses having a huge revival in recent years, thanks to a certain royal wedding, lace cakes have had a surge in popularity. Brides are opting for almost an edible version of their wedding dress, with intricate lace detailing on a classic white background. These cakes are then finished off with a classy pearl or bow detailing to truly capture the bridal gown.

SUGAR FLOWERS Possibly the biggest trend this year - gorgeous cakes beautifully adorned in flowers to match the wedding bouquets. However, due to the pesticides used on natural flowers, and their often inedible or even poisonous varieties, brides and grooms are looking to sugar flowers to help them out. The demand for high quality ultra-realistic sugar flowers has never been higher. Sugar flowers let you pick your perfect flower any time of the year – any colour, any type in any season!

METALS Gold, silver, copper, rose gold - you name it - if it shines it will be on wedding cakes this year. Some cakes are opting for fine classic detailing, others are going bold, with gold leaf or sequins. Using metals is a really effective and simple way to tie your cake into your wedding’s theme and colour scheme.

WEDDING BEAUTY WHEN IT COMES TO PLANNING YOUR WEDDING, SKINCARE AND MAKEUP IS USUALLY AT THE BACK OF YOUR MIND, THEN LEFT TO THE LAST MINUTE. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE PRIORITY, AFTER-ALL YOU WANT TO LOOK YOUR BEST IN YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS! So here is some advice in perfecting your skin care routine and choosing makeup, lets face it no one want a blemished, orange face on their big day! Whether you have a year, few months or weeks left until your big day – you still have time to nail your skincare routine. Think about the problems you have with your skin and what you want to achieve.

INVEST IN A SERUM I know I’ve said this many times before but these are a big deal! There are plenty on the market to suit all budgets! I recommend Vichy Aqualia Thermal Hydrating Face Serum. Compared to some other serums on the market, it’s very reasonable priced. This will last you ages too, as 1 pump goes a long way! It leaves your skin feeling fresh, hydrated and plumb – which is how you want your skin to feel on your big day!

18 | IN Derby | March 18

EYE CREAM Regardless of how many moisturisers or serums we use, the skin around your eyes need that extra care. You need a eye cream that targets dark circles and fine lines. Admittedly some eye creams are too heavy for the day time and under make up. So I recommend Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream. It’s formulated to help you achieve fresher, younger looking eyes by the morning, your eyes will thank you for it!

PREPARE If you plan on doing your own makeup on the day, then make sure you prepare! Practise the look you want at least a handful of times and make sure that you time yourself! You’ll want to know how much time to allocate when you’re getting ready and you don’t want to be rushing! Not confident enough in doing your own makeup? Then I would first see if you have a friend, who is really knowledgeable of makeup, good at applying it and would be willing to do your makeup. Or book a professional makeup artist, but make that decision sharpish as they booked up!

Make sure you do your research and have a least 2 trials with them, until you’re 100% happy. Please don’t be afraid of telling them what you do and don’t like of the look they done on you, after-all it’s your look and your big day!

LOOKS For inspiration of looks, create a mood board of snippets you find in magazines or online. Personally I prefer a natural look, with soft pinks for the eyes and for the lips; a pink-ish nude would be perfect Of course, go for a look that you’ll be comfortable with, just be conscious not to look like a total different person when walking down the isle otherwise, your other-half to be may be in for a shock.

ON THE DAY Do your skin care routine and prime before you get your hair done. By the time your hair has been styled your skin would have soaked up all the products and you’ll be able to get straight into the foundation and beyond! Remember to enjoy getting ready and take your time, after all the wedding can’t start without the beautiful bride!

WINTER TO SPRING SKIN TIPS FARZILA ALLARAKHA RUNS AWARD WINNING NEO ELEGANCE SKIN CLINIC IN VERNON GATE, WHICH SPECIALISES IN ADVANCED AND NON-INVASIVE SKIN TREATMENTS USING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES THAT ACHIEVE VISIBLE AND LONG LASTING RESULTS. HERE SHE HIGHLIGHTS SOME GREAT TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOUR SKIN MAKES A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM WINTER TO SPRING. SPRING CLEAN Of course, this is a popular time to sort out houses and wardrobes, but give your skincare some attention too. Most people are unaware that skincare ‘best before dates’ expire so check boxes and pots for the open jar symbol which tell you the shelf life of the product and throw away, if necessary.

FEEL LIGHTER As an aesthetic practitioner, I believe clients should have a simple everyday regime. AM: Double cleanse, apply a serum and finish off with a broad spectrum sun factor. PM: Double cleanse and apply a serum. There’s never any need to slather lots of products on your face. Thick moisturising creams may feel

great, but they are just sitting topically on our skin, tricking the skin into thinking there’s enough oil and moisture on the surface so it stops producing natural moisturising oils. We therefore need to keep our skin functioning in a youthful manner and to not be lazy.

SUN FACTOR I think sun factor should be renamed as daylight factor, as it needs to be worn all year round and every day to protect our skin from UV damage that is prevalent all year round. Studies have shown that UV rays contribute towards 80-90% of premature ageing – so it is definitely the main cause of ageing. UV rays are stronger during sunnier days and also during very snowy days.

SWEAT IT OUT

Spring can be a very unpredictable season and this affects our skin. During the winter, our skin tends to become tighter and drier due to the effects of the harsh winds and cold weather. However, as it becomes warmer, our skin sweats more. Sweat is highly alkaline and can cause crystallisation around pores, causing blockages and therefore leading to breakouts. This can be relieved by having regular enzyme peels with LED.

MAKE UP OR BREAK UP I would highly recommend mineral make up at this time of the year. The zinc provides good protection and a barrier from external pathogens and pollution, whilst drawing oil away from the skin’s surface. Minerals make up not only feels light and easy to wear in the warmer months, over time, it can actually help to improve the quality of the skin.

LIVE IT UP A lack of vitamin D, cold weather, dark nights and short days can most indefinitely cause a person to feel quite low. Spring is therefore the perfect time to plan to get out and about more - lifting your mood and combating stress which means better skin.

5 TRICKS FOR CREATIVE NETWORKING HAVING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A CREATIVE IS MORE THAN JUST BEING GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO AND HAVING A FABULOUS PORTFOLIO; GET TING YOUR NAME AND FACE KNOW IS PIVOTAL TO BUILDING YOUR CAREER. If, however, the thought of networking and selling yourself fills you with dread (especially face-to-face away from the blissful anonymity of social media) then fear not – here are some simple tricks to help you get creative about networking.

VIRTUAL PREPARATION Ok, so this is not so much creative as essential. Ensure you have the basics covered; date, time, location, business cards; meaning you can arrive relaxed - not sweaty and breathless. Got that sorted, then you can get creative. Use social media to get up to speed on the people and conversations already happening around the event (or even the previous events). Who’s posting or liking? Is there a speaker? Get to virtually know the other attendees before you go. Feeling brave – then start some virtual hello’s before the event. 20 | IN Derby | March 18

HAVE YOUR PHONE HANDY Checking your emails to avoid talking to anyone is not what we’re after here, but having some of your portfolio or recent work readily accessible as a talking point just might be. I also attended an event recently where instead of taking a business card, the person emailed me a ‘hello’ from their phone as we were talking. Introduction and follow up in one. Nice!

HOVER BY THE FOOD AND DRINKS It’s so much easier to start talking about your love of sausage rolls or hate of mini quiche, to launch into a full-blown professional introduction. Food and drink chat is an easy ‘in’ to more productive work conversations. Looking for someone in particular – they are bound to swing past the food and drink at some point making for a seemingly more spontaneous meeting.

DON’T TALK Can’t spot someone to aim for and chat to? Does it seem like everyone already knows everyone else? Stop worrying and just listen. We are often so hell bent on talking we forget to listen. Stand near a group, listen, pick up the thread of conversation and join in when you can.

Even if you can’t join in you’ll start to get a measure of the personalities in the group or people you’d like to follow up with later.

FOLLOW UP All that hard work is for nothing if you don’t do something after an event. Email, Link, Tweet, Like, Follow – this is the easy bit you get to do from the comfort of your own desk. Plus, don’t forget the organisers. They hold a wealth of data, information and potential introductions in the palm of their hand. Of course, most importantly, book to go again. Relationships are built over time and your much more likely to find the work, partnerships, contacts, whatever your after, once people get to know you and you become a familiar face. With Emirates flying from Birmingham, it couldn’t be easier to create these multi-centre holidays and to include the unique city of Dubai.

For those looking for more culture, the island of Sri Lanka is a great choice. Great beaches, history, food and wildlife are all on the agenda in this wonderful destination. Depending on how much or little time you can afford we can make something special for you.

Here at Just Journey we believe that developing the trip by combining a second destination can give your holiday more depth and substance and most importantly make the trip so much more memorable.

HAWKCHURCH JANUARY AND FEBRUARY HAVE TO BE THE MOST DULL AND LINGERING MONTHS IN THE YEAR, THE GLITZ AND FESTIVITIES OF CHRISTMAS ARE A DISTANT MEMORY AND IN IT’S PLACE IS AN EMPTY CALENDAR AND A STEADY OVERDRAFT BILL INSTEAD. This year me and the other half decided to get banish the new year blues and book a stay-cation in our favourite luxury UK lodge company, Darwin Escapes. Avid readers will know that last year we travelled to the candy coloured, oh-so-instagramable, Beach Cove in Ilfracombe and absolutely loved the hot tub relaxation that ensued. This year we travelled to the East of Devon to Axminster and stayed at the wooden lodges in Hawkchurch Resort and Spa. Now, we knew that this lodge would have to step up a notch to out do our sweet little hut on the beach… and boy, did it. Set in the rolling countryside, this super luxurious lodge was beautifully decorated, had a huge bed, hot tub submerged into the private deck and a freestanding bath to boot. 22 | IN Derby | March 18

There’s no much to do in the area, but that was the point – this was a relaxation holiday where we were forced to completely chill out. We did venture out during the day to seaside towns, quirky high street shops and National Trust properties, before heading back to the hydro pool and a relaxing drink in the Beeches restaurant on site. It was bliss. This was my second Darwin Escapes holiday and I’m already looking into my third next year. Prices start from £225 for a short break in Hawkchurch, so book yourself a getaway! You deserve it!
