Review By Sophie Colley

HOLLYWOOD BOWL LOCATED IN THE HEART OF DERBY’S INTU CENTRE, HOLLYWOOD BOWL OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. WHETHER YOU FANCY A FAMILY FUN DAY, TAKE ON YOUR FRIENDS OR ENJOY YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY, HOLLYWOOD BOWL IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO HAVE FUN AND MAKE MEMORIES.

6 | IN Derby | July • August 18

With deals for the family, kids, students and adults, Hollywood Bowl has you covered for an amazing time out. Go visit their website for details on what deals and events they currently have on at hollywoodbowl.co.uk. Upon arrival IN Magazine were very impressed with the location of Hollywood Bowl. Situated on Level 3 within the Derby’s intu centre, you can nip upstairs to enjoy some bowling and food, before heading back downstairs to continue some shopping. As soon as you walk in you’re hit with lots of colourful arcade games. Some vintage and some modern, there’s lots to choose from. Along with the arcade games, they also have multiple pool tables which are very popular.

Moving onto the bowling. With our bowling shoes on and competition high we headed round to their designated VIP section to start our game. This is a great option that Hollywood Bowl offer and their VIP sections can be hired out for private bookings and parties. Now onto the game! Not being bowling experts ourselves, we took this time to enjoy the game and have a laugh. This was by far the funniest part of the day and we believe you’re never too old to have fun bowling. We won’t tell you who won but it was close! A fantastic element we noticed about Hollywood Bowl was that the bowling balls have multiple holding slots, making it very easy to find a bowling ball that fits your fingers perfectly.

After burning off lots of calories bowling, we had definitely built up an appetite. Within Hollywood Bowl they have their Hollywood Diner, which is designed and inspired by America. Having tables within cars and orange diner benches, you really feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the 50s.

We also wanted to try one of their healthy dishes on the menu and the Cob Salad caught our attention. With chargrilled butterfly chicken sliced with crispy bacon, stilton, tomato, red onion, cucumber, croutons and Cos lettuce, it was wonderfully fresh and tasty.

Browsing the menu, you have a variety of American diner inspired food to choose from as well as a designed kids menu for those little leagues. We started off by ordering two of their old-fashioned ice cream shakes: Vanilla & OREO Biscuits which we’re incredible!

For desert we were told we had to try their Hollywood Bowl sharing desert.

To start we decided to share some Nachos. With warm tortilla chips topped with melted cheese, a tantalising medley of salsa, sour cream, guacamole and jalapeños, they were amazing – especially the sweet salsa!

With a huge bowl filled with chocolate fudge cake chunks, vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, OREO biscuits, mini marshmallows, chocolate and strawberry sauces, fan wafers, chocolate flakes and finished with sprinkles – need I say anymore!

This is a desert for a group - as we were sadly defeated. So, as you can see IN Magazine had an amazing time and if you’re looking for a fun day we highly recommend Hollywood Bowl in intu Derby – you won’t be disappointed! Get your bowling shoes ready!

hollywoodbowl.co.uk @hollywoodbowluk @hollywoodbowlofficialuk

Moving onto the mains we decided to go with their Hollywood Burger and Cob Salad. We can see why their Hollywood Burger is one of their popular dishes as it was amazing. The juicy beef against the crisp streaky bacon and Monterey jack cheese topped with their toasted brioche bun, it was delicious.

For the small business owner, keeping track of invoicing, payments and expenses can be a real headache! But now with digital accounting software, those time-consuming tasks have got so much quicker and easier. If you currently don’t use any accounting software, there’s just enough time to get ready for a big change which is soon to happen.

The government has announced that from April 2019 all VAT-registered businesses must keep digital accounting records under it’s new ‘Making Tax Digital’ rules.

Inna Morozova, The Local News’ advanced user of Quick Books and chartered certified accountant (ACCA) with more than 15 years of experience, said:

That means account books, spreadsheets and carrier bags full of receipts are no longer acceptable!

“All of your bookkeeping is done fast and efficiently. Everything is in the palm of your hand in one place as you can also see a snapshot of your business finances wherever you are on the mobile app.”

But help is at hand - The Local News have partnered with Quick Books Online to offer a digital accounting solution to local businesses. Our bookkeeping support services include raising and sending invoices, posting purchase invoices, bank reconciliation and posting all expenses without paper hassle. We also help with submitting VAT returns online and finalising year-end accounts ready for submission to your accountant who will have instant access to all records

“Our support services can be tailored to the size and needs of your business. You may just want help with the Quick Books set-up and training for you and your staff, or we can provide full monthly bookkeeping services. With monthly fees from just £79, we can take the hassle of your business bookkeeping and at the same time, we’ll make sure you are ready for the new Making Tax Digital rules.” For more information please call Inna on 0115 880 0174. MARKET HALL UPDATE

Work has started to transform the historic Market Hall into a bustling, vibrant destination with a new life and character to help re-energise the day and night time economies of the city centre.

The £11.4m project has started with the restoration of its distinctive barrel-shaped roof originally designed in 1864 by Derbyshire engineer Rowland Mason Ordish. Wear and tear has eroded some safety features of the glass panelling which forced the closure of the market during adverse weather. These and other aspects of the roof need to be replaced to make it safe again.

The restoration could take a maximum of three years and the Market Hall will remain open during the restoration work. Further phases of work are in the planning stages. These are designed to re-purpose the business by expanding its products and services.

Here is a selection of just some of the Market Hall businesses. For a full list and details, please visit derbycathedralquarter.co.uk/DerbyMarket

Mainframe Presents... By Hana York

TECHNOLOGY – TO DISCONNECT OR RECONNECT? EVER FELT THAT YOU’RE DIGITALLY DROWNING? IS TECHNOLOGY CRUSHING YOUR CREATIVITY? PERHAPS YOU EVEN FEEL ADDICTED TO YOUR APPS? THERE ARE THOSE WHO SAY WE SHOULD SIMPLY DISCONNECT AND THERE ARE THOSE WHO SAY WE CAN FIND A WAY TO RECONNECT WITH TECHNOLOGY IN A HEALTHIER WAY. WHICH WILL WORK FOR YOU? TRY A DIGITAL DISCONNECT • No devices whilst on the move. In a queue, taking the bus, on the toilet - simply allow your mind to wonder. • Delete your most-used app. Free up time you usually spend browsing for creative thinking or those tasks you just never seem to have time for. • Take time out within your working day. Do you constantly email check? Can’t ignore the ping of a notification? Set times in the day when you put your devices away and truly focus on just one task.

By taking steps, even small ones, to disconnect from our devices we are essentially allowing our minds the freedom to wonder, to notice the here and now and truly be present.

TRY A DIGITAL RECONNECT • Prioritise direct communication. Stop mindless engagement with emoji’s and pre-determined answers. Think about what your saying and craft individual, meaningful responses. It’s all about less quantity more quality. • Create more & consume less. Stop scrolling without really seeing. Put your effort into creating. Anything from a Pinterest board to a thoughtful review so long as your creating. • Leave mental white space. Don’t get caught in the tap/refresh cycle thinking your going to miss something. Use apps that allow you easily stop and step away.

• Minimise the numbers. Numbers force us to keep checking back. How many steps, how many likes, how many notifications. Redress the balance with other activities that put the numbers in context such as journalling. By using technology more consciously and developing a healthier relationship with our devices, perhaps we can learn how to let them support our lives, rather than rule them. Rather than totally disconnect perhaps we should simply consciously connect.

Mainframe We know that some of the UK’s most talented digital & creative businesses call Derby and Derbyshire home. Mainframe is a community of those people, sharing their talent, knowledge and inspiration. Based at QUAD and funded via the European Regional Development Fund and Art’s Council England; we host free monthly meetup’s covering topics from the inspirational, to business growth to the downright futuristic and forward thinking. Mainframe is part of the Big House, a collaboration providing sector specific support; making it easier for digital & creative businesses to understand and access the free help available in our region. mainframederby.co.uk

Health By Victoria Pirozzolo (Vamp Fitness)

FOUR STATEMENTS SABOTAGING YOUR FITNESS GOALS WITH SO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE REGARDING DIET AND TRAINING, ITS HARD TO KNOW WHAT INFORMATION TO FOLLOW AND WHAT IS COMPLETE TRIPE! SO LETS GET FRANK... "YOU NEED TO EAT 6 TIMES A DAY OTHERWISE YOUR METABOLISM WILL SLOW DOWN"

"YOU CAN CHOOSE WHERE YOU LOOSE FAT FROM" Sadly no you can't! If you are looking to loose belly fat or just a little bit in your legs, it’s a full body process I’m afraid. Everyone’s body composition is different and therefore lose fat from different places at different rates. All you can do is maintain a consistent calorific deficit through nutrition and training until you see a reduction in that area.

Whether it be in the form of whole foods or naughty treats a little bit of sugar can go a long way. Predominantly you need glucose for energy and to keep your blood sugar levels regulated throughout the day to prevent cravings, dizziness, fuel activities and overall enable your body to function at optimal levels!

If you are on a weight loss journey having a little bit of what you fancy can be the difference in success or failure. Stay within your calorie deficit, swap out the odd healthy snack for a little something sweeter with the same calorie content and enjoy.

"DON'T EAT CARBS AFTER 7PM AS IT WILL STORE AS FAT" Good one! Whether its 3pm or 10 pm it comes down to total number of calories in the day consumed verses how many you have burnt!

22 | IN Derby | July • August 18

Sugar and spice is found in all things nice right! Yes you can have sugar and for many of my clients, I insist on it!

This will be attained through your carbohydrate intake but there is nothing to say you cant add a little bit of chocolate here and there.

Weight and body composition works on the basis of calories in vs calories out , so if you have 1 or 10 meals a day calories are calories no matter what time of day it is it wont make a difference.

So, if you work late and have a high carb meal at 9pm as long as you are within your overall calorie deficit you will still loose weight!

"YOU CAN'T HAVE SUGAR"

ALFRESCO PARTIES AND CREATING THE PERFECT ATMOSPHERE REMEMBER THOSE LONG HOT DAYS AND WARM SUMMER EVENINGS WHEN YOU CAN SIT OUT UNDER THE STARS TILL THE EARLY HOURS? WE’VE HAD A TASTE ALREADY THIS YEAR AND WITH SUMMER UPON US AT LAST CAN IMAGINE THAT FOR ONCE WE REALLY DO LIVE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN! Now with a few well-chosen accessories, you can easily create the look, the mood and feel to complete the scene For late evening alfresco dining, lighting is essential as the evening draws in. So as part of your preparation, hanging string lights through trees, along fences or wrap around pergolas. It’s a really easy way to add a touch of sparkle and now some solar driven lights have improved technology, you need not worry if there’s no outdoor socket nearby. 24 | IN Derby | July • August 18

Don’t neglect the edges of your garden either, an ingenious way is to pop a few statement lights in either your borders, in a group in the lawn or if you have a small backyard then plant pots will be just as good.

Solar Starburst Lights are stunning at dusk when they just burst automatically into action! Rechargeable lights are perfect for any alfresco parties too.

Charge them through the day on a USB plug and then in the evening hang them from trees, lamp stands or simply place on the table to allow the guests to see what they are eating! Most good quality rechargeable lights will run from 8 to 12 hours, plenty of time for serious partying. If you are a traditionalist at heart, then of course, nothing but candles will do! Then add a warmth and movement that technology struggles to match. Look for good, large lanterns that are large enough to stand on the floor. I always position lanterns on the edge of steps or pathways to light the way - especially important at the end of parties when the wine has flowed, the light is dimmer and the guests are a little less nimble on their feet than at the start of the evening.

Of course with the British weather, not every evening will be warm and balmy, so perhaps think about a fire bowl for your summer soiree? You can choose simple fire bowls where you and your guests can snuggle round and get cosy – or have one which is big enough and tall enough to double up as a relaxed BBQ. If contemporary is more your style, then the stainless steel and aluminum one by Dancook, just exudes Danish style. With any fire pit or fire bowl the key is in the lighting, don’t leave it to the last minute, plan ahead. Make sure the logs are dry and seasoned, light the logs well before the party starts, so that by the time the guests have arrived the fire is hot and smoldering, not just a pile of damp logs smoking away; no-one wants to smell like a bonfire the next morning.

Finally, if you strive to be the hostess with the mostess and are looking for an practical way to make life easy, carrying out drinks, nibbles, food etc, invest in an alfresco drinks trolley or some gorgeous outdoor tray tables. There are trolleys or side tables now that have integrated trays, so the top of the trolley is a tray and a table top in one and still with great style. We are not talking about the 1970’s Hostess Trolleys and choose colours that complement your outdoor furniture; be bold and enjoy!

For more information contact The Worm that Turned, at worm.co.uk or visit their store on Derby Road, Nottingham. They can help you cherry pick the perfect combination for your outdoor space.

SUMMER STYLING

WITH THE SUN SHINING WE ALL FEEL A NEW ENERGY AND AS SUMMER TAKES HOLD ITS NORMALLY THE TIME WE THROW OPEN THE DOORS AND WINDOWS AND ENJOY THE SUNSHINE.

26 | IN Derby | July • August 18

Why not take it one step further and use this season to provide you with a fantastic concept for your interior styling? This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to fill the house with floral prints and bright colours, but using a strong concept helps to keep your scheme on track and all working together. I have always loved using wallpapers to create an immediate impact and if you use something with a reflective design it will bounce the light around

and create interest throughout different times of the day. However, if you’d like to be bold and go for a striking design with a big presence then botanicals are a real hit at the moment. Prestigious Textiles have a stunning collection of leafy prints and embroidered linens showcasing a broad range of colour palettes. Zingy citrus greens, warmer terracotta and cool teal are all offered in the collection.

To keep the flow of your concept, make sure everything you choose has a relationship.

Take advantage of what summer really has to offer too.

Natural materials like wood, teamed with linens and wools are a wonderful blend when looking to bring the beauty of nature, indoors into your home.

Cut flowers are always present all over my home. The easiest way to introduce a pop of colour to a room.

A great place to find statement pieces of furniture in natural woods like mango, ash and oak is swooneditions.com.

These wall mounted vases are unusual, eyecatching and ever changing as you could play with different combinations of blooms.

This Karlsson sideboard in mango wood brings natural warmth with tonnes of sophisticated styling into your home.

So, whilst you’re sat outside with the bbq lit and ice and a slice in your G&T, take note of everything around you and get inspired – you can’t argue with Mother Nature!
