BLOCK BUSTLER Following the huge success of the monthly street food markets at Derby Riverlights this summer, the team behind Bustler Market have teamed up with Quad for a new series of special cinema screenings. The inaugural event will be celebrating the most scary time of the year with Derby’s first Day of the Dead-themed taking place on Halloween, Tuesday 31 October. Guests will be encouraged to attend in costume, with live entertainment, Mexican street food, bars and a few other surprises on offer too! The chosen film on the night will be From Dusk til Dawn, a cult B-movie genre mash-up which sees two criminal brothers (played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino) go on the run following a bank heist gone wrong only to find themselves trapped in a vampire-infested bar on the Mexican border. If you’ve not seen it before, this one’s a real blast!

THE DOG & MOON

The Dog & Moon is a new curiosity-filled free house situated in the middle of Sadler Gate, Derby. Stocking an ever-changing selection of real ales, craft beers, wines and spirits from a range of independent distilleries all over the UK, The Dog & Moon provides a relaxed drinking atmosphere throughout the week as well as live music at the weekends. A house blend of direct trade, 100% Arabica coffee by Buxton Roastery, as well as a tea menu featuring ten teas from around the world, are also available. In addition, there is a large outdoor terrace to the rear which hosts live music acts throughout the year, whilst acoustic sessions are held in the bar area on Friday nights. A tempting bar menu featuring homemade scotch eggs in many flavours, as well as platters and cheese boards, is perfect for sharing with friends over your favourite beverage.

DOUGHNOTTS

Having already done roaring trade selling sweet treats at the other end of the A52, Doughnotts has opened its first store in Derby amongst the boutique shops on Sadler Gate.

Selling over 10,000 doughnuts a week in Nottingham, the Derby store managed to shift an incredible 2,000 in its opening day. Being just up the road from IN Derby HQ, we must admit to being responsible for a few of those sales! A damn good cup of coffee is the best accompaniment for doughnuts and luckily Doughotts customers can also treat themselves to a full flavoured cup from artisan coffee roasters, 200 Degrees Coffee. With a seemingly endless range of doughnuts to choose from, and with new flavours being added every week, there’s always a reason to return and indulge your sweet tooth. 4 | IN Derby | October 17

POLISHED NO MAKEUP LOOK AUTUMN HAS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SEASONS FOR MAKEUP. IT’S THE PERFECT TRANSITION FROM SUMMER’S DEWY, SUN KISSED SKIN, INTO WINTER’S FULL COVERAGE, MATTE AND HEAVY MAKEUP. THIS SEASON’S TREND IS ABOUT HAVING A POLISHED, “NO MAKEUP” LOOK. I LOVE THIS, AS YOU’RE JUST ENHANCING YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY.

LIPS

Now if you really want to stay 100% true to the polished no makeup look, then just apply your favourite lip balm, mine is Nuxe Reve de Miel - it’s super nourishing...and tasty! If you’re a lippy lover like me, then go for nude “your lips, but better” semi matte shades, Here’s some of my favs: •MAC Faux •Maybelline Colour Sensational - Creamy Matte - Smoky Rose •NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm.

THE BASE

I recommend Urban decay’s One and Done. This isn’t officially a foundation, but everyone uses it as that. It’ll give you enough coverage to hide any blemishes, but still let your sun kissed skin show through giving you a lovely semi-matte finish. It’s perfect for all skin types, even with my oily skin, this is probably the only base that I don’t need to set with powder. If you feel you also need some concealer, only use a tiny amount.

BROWS

If you’re lucky enough to have full thick brows then all you would need is a brow gel to tidy and set them in place. For most of us we need a litte pencil or powder. I recommend Benefit’s Precisely My Brow Pencil. With 6 shades to choose from and a hard, non waxy formula, it’ll help you create perfect polish brows. 8 | IN Derby | October 17

EYESHADOW

Even with a no makeup look, eyeshadow can still help make you look more awake and give your eyes some shape, but stick with nude shades. I love this palette by NIP+FAB, it’s got a great mix of cool and warm tones, matte and shimmer - it’s practically the perfect palette! All you need is 2 fluffy blending brushes and use the 4 shades in the top left corner to achieve a natural eye look.

HOW TO HANDLE GOING BOLD

WHEN YOU HAVE HAIR IT’S EASY TO CHOOSE A HAIR STYLE AND TRY DIFFERENT THINGS. WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU’RE SOMEONE WHO’S BEGINNING TO BALD OR IS BALD? FIRST OF ALL, DON’T FALL INTO THE TRAP OF THINKING YOU’RE GOING TO LOOK BAD BALD. BRING OUT THE ACCESSORIES Going bald boils down to having one less thing to work with in your overall style. You need to find something else to replace what’s missing. Accessories are the easiest and quickest option to make up for a lack of hair. Hats, glasses, jewellery, you name it…

FACIAL HAIR One of the biggest things you can do for the greatest impact to pair with going bald is a beard. A beard will help you look great while going bald.

By Dan Sinnott (Blogger) If you’re unsure what kind of beard will look good on you the best go to is your standard full beard. Give it 2 months of full growth and then trim it with a #3 hair clipper guard will usually give you a nice beard. There are many reasons to be bald with a beard and you must admit the facial hair looks great on other bald men you’ve seen.

BENEFITS TO BEING BALD

Women Like It – While going bald isn’t the best way to attract females you must admit they do love it. Women like men who are confident and being confident enough to embrace your baldness, is attractive. Masculine – When you’re bald you immediately gain this illusion of dominance. It just comes with the territory and you look more masculine.

Time and Money – Once shaving your head becomes routine you’ll no longer need to see a barber.

What guy wouldn’t want to appear even slightly more masculine without putting in much effort?

Think of the amount of time and money you’ll save overall. Comparing the cost to shaving your head compared to trying to regrow hair through products or surgery it starts to not look so bad.

Derby’s Market place welcomes the UK’s ultimate Oktoberfest, the most authentic Bavarian celebration this side of the channel!

The sensational Gatepost Theatre Company return with the puppet-filled comedy Avenue Q at the Guildhall Theatre.

Quad’s annual horror film all-nighter is back for a ninth year of films plus breakfast, just in time for Halloween.

Oktoberfest is the extremely popular German folk festival that has been celebrated in Munich, Bavaria for over 200 years, where people engage in all manner of music, games, entertainment, food, and singing.

The laugh-out-loud musical Avenue Q is the story of a group of twenty-somethings seeking their purpose in big-city life. Recent college graduate Princeton, moves into an apartment all the way out on Avenue Q, New York. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy The Slut and other colourful types.

Starting from 8.30pm hardcore horror fans will be able to gorge on gore and spooky thrills right through until morning.

First and foremost, Oktoberfest is a highlight of Germany’s culinary calendar, and Derby’s will be no exception! Showcasing the best in traditional German and Bavarian cuisine, the Bierhalle will be filled with mouth-watering smells. And of course, no Oktoberfest is complete without barrels of the finest Bavarian beer being emptied into glass steins! Expect authentic beer from the most revered and respected brewery in Germany!

Filled with gut-busting humour and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets, Avenue Q is a truly unique show that has quickly become a favourite for audiences everywhere.

This year’s selected films include devil child classic The Omen (1976), new British chiller B&B (2017), the rather gooey and satirical Society (1989), a rather excellent made-for-TV short film The Signalman (1976) and one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best, The Birds (1963). An additional film was yet to be announced at time of press. Those hardy enough to make it through the night will be able to treat themselves to a well-earned meaty (or veggie) breakfast come sunrise.

DOUG SCOTT - A CRAWL DOWN THE OGRE Tuesday 31st October Guildhall Theatre

JUNGLE BOOK THE HOOSIERS Saturday 14th October

10years.thehoosiers.com Indie popsters The Hoosiers will be playing their debut album ‘The Trick To Life’ in full when they visit The Venue. The 2007 album was released to huge popular acclaim and included the massive hit singles ‘Worried About Ray’ and ‘Goodbye Mr A’, which still pack out indie dance floors a decade later. Tension, creativity, democracy, arguments, time apart, coming back together, and then songs. Lots of them. Gone is the self-consciousness of the dog days around their second album; gone, too, the selfdoubt. In their place is a deeply rooted – and hardwon – confidence, and a determination to lock back in to the freedom and joy of the early days.

Wednesday 25th October – Saturday 28th October Derby Theatre

derbytheatre.co.uk Spectacular street-dance and breath-taking circus combine to bring Kipling’s classic tale crashing into the 21st Century at Derby Theatre. Fresh from its international tour, award winning Metta Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Jungle Book will delight the whole family. Mowgli is finding her way in the urban jungle. With a beat-loving bin man Baloo, graffiti artist Bagheera and a skateboarding Wolf crew, this heart-warming coming of age story will astonish and amaze. Choreographed by Kendra J Horsburgh (BirdGang Dance Company, Into the Hoods, Sadler’s Wells and Blaze, International Tour) and featuring jaw-dropping tricks from an extraordinary cast of international performers, this is a show for everyone from 8 to 108.

derbylive.co.uk World famous mountaineer, Doug Scott, visits Derby’s Guildhall Theatre share his epic tale of hard climbing and survival that has now become part of mountaineering folklore. Whilst his highpoint (if you excuse the pun) was the first ascent of Everest by its enormous South West Face – Everest: The Hard Way – his greatest adventure was undoubtedly his first ascent, accident and then escape from The Ogre. Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent of The Ogre (7,285m) in 1977. Their subsequent descent, in the dark, immediately became an epic; with Doug breaking both his legs just above the ankles. A storm blew in lasting five days during which time Chris smashed his ribs and contracted pneumonia. It took eight hard days to reach Base Camp . It was 24 years before there was a second ascent of The Ogre.

LEE RICHARDS GIVING NEW LIFE TO OLD OBJECTS

CROMFORD MILLS IS ONE OF DERBYSHIRE’S MOST FAMOUS HISTORICAL SITES, PROVIDING A WINDOW INTO OUR NATION’SINDUSTRIAL PAST WHILST NOWPROVIDED A HOME FOR MANY NEW AND MODERN BUSINESSES. Rather fittingly, given Cromford Mills’ re-use, the site has become home to a leading Derby business that focuses on giving a new life to old objects. Even if you haven’t heard of Upcycled Creative yet (where have you been?!), you’ve no doubt come across some of founder Lee Richards’ creations in bars, restaurants and cafes across Derby and perhaps beyond. Following great success at his previous premises in Markeaton Park Craft Village, Lee has moved Upcycled Creative into the bigger workshop and studio space he now finds himself in at Cromford Mills. We spoke to him about how he formed Upcycled Creative and how he is growing one of Derbyshire’s most exciting and creative small businesses.

12 | IN Derby | October 17

WHAT IS UP-CYCLING? Whilst most will be familiar with the recycling process of taking waste products and turning them into reusable materials - upcycling instead involves turning unwanted items and materials into a product of a better quality. Not only does upcycling have clear environmental benefits, but in the furniture world it can also help create some truly unique and one-off pieces. And that’s where Lee comes in. Having originally worked in the motor-trade for 20 years, Lee first become interested in upcycling as a hobby. He then started working in his spare time with a partner.

They quickly grew a business out of selling lamps made from old bits of reclaimed pipe before he decided he wanted to take a different route and work for himself. “We created a brand but I wanted to go in a different direction and break away from the corporate world and purely work for myself. So I thought, right, let me build up a business over two or three years whilst I’m working and I got it to certain level.” Lee said. He’d grown Upcycled Creative to a sustainable level and one that meant he could quit his full-time job, although he admits it was a calculated risk. Lee continued, “Leaving the company car, BUPA cover and a nice salary behind was quite daunting,

but I knew my own capabilities. I’d worked in sales in the motor trade industry for over 20 years and was well used to the management/operational side of things.” Upcycled Creative now makes all sorts of things from, well, all sorts of things. Lee helps craft unique pieces of furniture and light fittings for both private and commercial use, incorporating everything from old factory lampshades and switchboxes to fire extinguishers from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Lee said that many of his customers want one-ofa-kind pieces, explaining: “It’s about being different and quirky, having a statement piece. Something that visitors to your house aren’t going to see anywhere else.” Despite dealing with a lot of old materials, it’s the new that has helped Lee grow his business. Social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest have generated a lot of his referrals. Lee even won a business incentive on Twitter run by former ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis that has led to a number of beneficial partnerships. Not only been a source of referrals and businesses opportunities, these new digital platforms have also a point of inspiration for Lee’s customers, including some well-known local establishments.

“IT’S ABOUT BEING DIFFERENT AND QUIRKY, HAVING A STATEMENT PIECE. SOMETHING THAT VISITORS TO YOUR HOUSE AREN’T GOING TO SEE ANYWHERE ELSE.”

They’d been inspired by a diner they’d seen in America and wanted to have something similar.” We can vouch for Lee and say that what he’s created for The Palfrey is absolutely stunning and has helped make it one of the most visually striking places to go and have a meal in Derby’s city centre. Upcycled Creative has also worked its magic on furniture and fittings for other local businesses including The Wonky Table on Sadler Gate and Oliver’s on Friar Gate. Lee’s eye-catching creations have been used by businesses across the UK too, with the Mexican restaurant chain Chimichanga using Upcycled Creative pieces at locations as far afield as Kettering, Northampton and London. As his business has grown and opportunities start to come his way, Lee is focussed on continuing to create high quality products and not taking things too quickly. Instead, he wants the business to grow at his own pace alongside the local business community. “When I started I was simply doing one-off pieces but within 3 years of running the business full time, 50 per cent of my work came from bars, restaurants, cafes. Where do we go from here? I don’t know - I just keep doing what I do,”

“I’ve been talking to one or two pub chains, one of which wants to refurbish over 20 - 30 pubs. It’s nice to have that opportunity for security, but it might not leave me with the time to do things for people locally,” “It’s not just about getting bigger. For me what’s most important is what’s on my doorstep in Derby and working with local businesses.” Lee has plans to run workshops in upcycling, furniture painting and upholstery from Upcycled Creative’s new premises at Cromford Mills from the start of next year.

For more information about Upcycled Creative and to view their online store, you can visit: www.upcycledcreative.co.uk. @reupcycled @upcycledcreative

Lee: “We get a lot of commission stuff now. Over the last 12 or 18 months customers are coming to me with pictures off Pinterest of things people have made across the world, from the US to New Zealand, and are asking me to recreate it. “This is how The Palfrey (a restaurant based in Derby’s Old Blacksmiths Yard) approached us. We created a toilet out of a beer keg, whilst the sinks and mirrors were made from old whisky barrels. October 17 | IN Derby | 13

ACCESSORIZE Statement Stone Tassel Earrings £12

I’m really loving them right now. I think my fascination with the tassel started when I bought a summer beach bag with them on and was obsessed and then they transitioned onto shoes, hats and now earrings and they’re EVERYWHERE. I think they’re my favourite trend so far. They go with everything from jeans and tees to sweaters, day dresses to formal dresses, they are also diverse for all seasons just by switching out the colours and can also bring a pop of colour to any outfit.

5 LEATHER SHOES EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN an By D

FAR TOO MANY MEN STOCK THEIR CLOSET WITH A HALF DOZEN PAIRS OF THE SAME TYPE OF SHOE, YOU NEED A LIT TLE DIVERSITY IN YOUR LIFE! BELOW YOU’LL FIND FIVE SHOES THAT SHOULD BE SIT TING IN YOUR CLOSET TODAY. CHELSEA OOT The Chelsea boot is a great one to wear when the temperature drops, but when you still need something to wear that looks good in the office. These boots are lace-less, so they are much better at keeping your feet and ankles warm. You can find many great looking Chelsea boots that integrate modern soles, so they’re also extremely comfortable as well. Chelsea boots pair well with business casual clothing like jeans and cords.

SLIM BLACK OXFORD The slim black Oxford is another staple of the business world. But the great part about either the shoe or boot version of this classic piece of footwear is that you can also use it as a substitute for the patent leather shoes that you traditionally wear with a tuxedo.

DARK BROWN OXFORD The dark brown oxford is a staple of the office, and one item that every man should have at least one pair of. Not only do they go great with a suit, but they can just as easily dress down as well.

CHUKKA’S The Chukka, or Desert Boot, is a staple of hipster culture across the country, but it also finds its way into the closets of many men because of its classic looks and casual attitude. The latest trend is to get Chukkas in a softer material like suede, but having a leather Chukkas is a far better long-term decision. The leather Chukka is a classic, and one that can stand up to a surprising amount of punishment. You should pair these boots with a nice pair of jeans for a night out on the town.

RUGGED WORK BOOT Unlike the casual boot mentioned above, there are some situations that call for a serious piece of footwear that you can put into almost any situation that you find yourself in. Having a rugged work boot is less about style than it is about keeping yourself safe, but that doesn’t mean that they have to look bad. You can find plenty of work boots that look great, but that fit the rugged boot criteria.

BEAUTIFUL BOLOGNA

ALISTAIR BELL AT JUST JOURNEY HAS JUST RETURNED FROM EXPLORING NORTHERN ITALY AND WAS TAKEN BY THE CULINARY DELIGHTS ON OFFER IN THE CITY OF BOLOGNA.

By Al

Bell ( Ju s t J ourne y

The city itself is in central northern Italy, close to Florence and not far from Milan in one direction and Venice in another.

Bologna, as the name suggests, is most famous for being the birthplace of Bolognese sauce, known locally as ragu.

It provides visitors with an authentic Italian experience, from the red tiled rooftops and historic towers in the old town, to the fantastic food.

However, don’t be tempted to ask for a spaghetti Bolognese when there, as tagliatelle is the pasta used to accompany this dish!

Walking through the city’s narrow streets, you get a real sense of its culinary prowess with eating establishments spilling out on to the pavements everywhere.

The city is also famous for tortellini and you can see it being made in the deli’s and restaurants as you walk around the city centre.

All ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, which only enhances the taste and experience of eating the most traditional and authentic Italian food you are likely to find.

There are plenty to choose from and lots of deli’s selling meats, cheeses and freshly made pasta to get the taste buds going.

Many of the restaurants in Bologna are relaxed places to enjoy the local wine, whilst sharing a platter of the local cheeses and cured meats which is a must do when visiting the city.

To end your meal, there are also plenty of desserts to choose from, or visit one of the cities many ‘gelataria’s’ for some of Italy’s best ice cream!

If wanting to experience the city’s famous ‘tagliatelle’ Bolognese or its tortellini, you can be sure that the pasta will have been hand made earlier in the day.

THE 5 FITNESS MYTHS YOU CAN IGNORE PEOPLE HAVE A LOT OF MISCONCEPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS. I’D LIKE DISPEL SOME OF THOSE MY THS. I feel like a lot of people miss out on things because of what they’ve heard, or seen their favourite Instagram idol do. It pains me when I speak to young women and they’re scared of lifting weights for the fear of getting ‘bulky’. It takes around a month for an average natural woman to gain 0.5-1lb of muscle. Do you know how much you’d have to eat and how much more you’d have to train to exceed that? A lot! So no, lifting weights won’t make you look like Arnie. It will, however, make you look and feel like a badass. I also get some people telling me how lucky I am to be in such good shape; how it must be my genetics and how being naturally slim must be wonderful.

NEWS FLASH: I WORK HARD FOR THIS! I train 6 times a week, sculpt my diet around my training, keep my body fat fairly low and eat, breathe and sleep fitness. I don’t look like this because my dad had a six pack. “No carbs after 6pm”... this one kills me. Your body doesn’t know what time it is! If you want to eat a slice of toast at 8pm, do it. You won’t gain 3 stone in 10 seconds. And if you’re hungry and want to eat 10 minutes before you go to sleep, you can. You might actually sleep better after having a snack, and your body will burn calories while you sleep anyway, so a little extra energy will do no harm.

YOU NEED TO EAT AND EVERYTHING IN MODERATION! “I’m gonna go on a juice diet!” Nope, you’re gonna starve yourself for 3 days, lose 1lb, feel rubbish,

cry on Sandra’s shoulder, treat yourself to a McDonald’s and go back to square one. You need to eat and everything in moderation. Bread won’t make you fat and sugar isn’t the devil. Eating healthily isn’t expensive either: frozen veg costs 89p and 1.5kg of chicken is £3.80. Enough said.

THEY DON’T WORK! People will try and make you believe something, so that you try the next fad or buy their products. But if you take some time to do a little bit of research, you’ll probably realise you’re allowed to eat and do more than you think!

THERE’S SO MUCH RUBBISH SURROUNDING FOOD AND FITNESS! For more advice on nutrition or training, email me at rosynesbitt@gmail.com. @hellorosy Train Dirty October 17 | IN Derby | 21

SOPHISTICATED NEUTRALS

AUTUMN IS HERE AND THAT MEANS TWO THINGS: WE SAY GOODBYE TO SUNNY SKIES AND DITCH THE BOLD SUMMER COLOURS IN OUR HOMES. We had so much fun splashing bright colours anywhere we could this summer, but now it’s time to create a cosy sanctuary, where you can relax and seek warmth on these chilly evenings. Using muted colours and soft neutrals are exactly the way to do this. If you are new to the interior design world and unsure where to go with this delightfully subtle trend, then start with a neutral colour scheme and add in some muted shades such as a pale pink with a gentle shade of light blue. 22 | IN Derby | October 17
