The Moorjock September 2012

Street collection Scarborough A good day was had by those twelve or so team members who set up camp outside the th Brunswick Center on Saturday the 29 of September. As well as raising a fantastic £811.61 we met a number of old friends and made contact with a few potential new members. Thanks to all who attended.

Awards galore MEMBERS of Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue were presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of their vital work. The award was made by Lord Crathorne, Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire at the team’s Snainton HQ, to Roger Hartley, team chairman. The award is the highest honour given to volunteer groups across the UK for outstanding work done in their local communities and was awarded to about 100 groups in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. In addition, members of the team with more than five years’ service were presented with Diamond Jubilee Medals. A spokesman said: “The team is extremely proud to receive this honour in recognition of the commitment its members put in to attending incidents, training and fundraising.” Lord Crathorne, honorary president of two North Yorkshire rescue teams, was quick to praise the support team members receive from their families as well as the dedication shown by the team members themselves. The presentation was attended by members of the team, their families, representatives of the police and ambulance service and representatives of other local voluntary groups. The team was also pleased to have Mr and Mrs Goodson, proprietors of Wayside Holiday Park, present at the presentation. Wayside Holiday Park has recently entered in to a sponsorship agreement which will greatly help the team with its annual running costs. (Extract from the Gazette and Herald) The team were also finalists in the Ryedale Rural Awards, well commended but beaten on the night by Hovingham Action Group.

Rescue Beck Hole

Team fundraising walks 2012 Monthly update

We hosted a very successful Falcon Flyer in March. Along with a very wet but popular ½ Marathon in April.

The team were called out immediately after the Scarborough Street collection to a rescue above beck Hole. A gentleman in a party of three had slipped sustaining an ankle injury. The team deployed, located the party, treated the injury on site and then extracted the patient and the rest of the party to a farm track where he was handed over to an ambulance for recovery to Scarborough Hospital. A few days later we received this thank you from our latest client: Dear Mountain Rescue thank you very much for getting me of the moor on Saturday 29 September. You were great and the carry off the moor was smoother than the ambulance ride. I had three x-rays and the doctor said I had "a rather badly sprained ankle" Thank you for giving my companions a lift back to my car.

Thanks again. Kind regards Paul

Our last challenge event of the year is the Saltergate circuit th – Saturday 6 October. It is reassuring that so many of the team (operational, trainee, Associate and Honorary Life members) have signed up to help on the day. The three challenge events raise significant funds for the team and our profile in the local community so the support by all team members is appreciated. We will start the planning of next year’s event soon and are on the lookout for team members to step forward to take on the organisation of these events and build on the success of the recent challenges. Names to Committee Members or Members Representatives.

-4Notices Every 12 months or so North Yorkshire Police host a dinner to recognise the work of the five volunteer search and rescue teams in North Yorkshire. The next event will take place at Black Sheep Brewery, Masham on Friday the 1st of March 2013. This year each team is invited to send four team members to the event. Additionally the police are asking that each team invite a member of the public whom they have recently rescued along with a partner/friend (a total of six people per team). The event will take the format of: * The rescued guest being invited to spend a few minutes recollecting the circumstances of their rescue and then present a general award to the team in question to recognise all the general search and rescue activities of that team. * A second award for an individual team member to recognise lifetime achievement of that team member. With that in mind the committee wish to request the following before our team meeting in November. Nominations from the team for three of the four team members we each consider we would like to represent the team. The nomination can be for operational, associate or honorary team members. The committee will nominate the fourth attendee. Additionally from these three names nominate one for the lifetime achievement award. Please note that the team member we put forward for this award will require a citation on the night so please briefly detail as to why you are nominating them. Please send me your nominations so I can compile the details in time for November. Clearly we are also on the lookout for one of our 'customers' to attend. If you are in contact with a suitable candidate please let me have their details so the committee can work out who we would like to invite and send the necessary invite out. At this stage please do not extend any such invites to them though. All team members regardless of membership status can nominate. Ian Hugill Hi everyone, I'm organising a get together on 8th December at The Grapes, everyone is welcome (including partners), it's for a 2 course Christmas meal (7 for 7.30pm) and we are hoping to organise some entertainment depending on cost (possibly the band who was at the auction at The Grapes earlier this year or the group that was at the Pickering Street Collection last month). The room I've booked will take 35 comfortably, 40 at a push, and so if you could let me know if you would like to reserve a place/s then I have an idea of numbers, The Grapes have not yet done their Christmas Party menu but the cost is likely to be in the region of ÂŁ20.00 per person. As the room will only take 40 at a push it will have to be a first come first served basis & I will need a ÂŁ10 deposit per person by the end of October to guarantee your place/s. Would be lovely to see as many as possible there on the night Helen :-)

Two pictures for your captions this month. Go on you know you want to !
