Off we go – next stop James Cook

On the afternoon of the 20th of July the team responded to a request for assistance from Yorkshire Ambulance Service to evacuate a lady walker with an ankle injury from New Wath Scar Woods, Goathland. Knowing the area and the complexity of a rescue in that area we requested an RAF Seaking to winch out of the valley. Our local helicopter from RAF Leconfield was already tasked so Rescue 131 flew down from RAF Boulmer to help. The find was recovered to James Cook Hospital after a short winch and flight. A fine example of multi agency working. YAS, RAF, SRMRT and North Yorkshire Police. Our stretcher and casbag was recovered the following week from James Cook after much misinformation initially suggested it was holidaying in Alnwick.

Team fundraising walks 2012 Monthly update

It would be good to build on this and I would appreciate any records, pictures or such to start building a team archive. Please have a dig around to see what you have, I will copy and return anything which is provided to me and acknowledge the provider whenever I use it.

We hosted a very successful Falcon Flyer in March. Along with a very wet but popular ½ Marathon in April. Our last challenge event of the year is the Saltergate circuit th

To set the ball rolling, ever wondered what team members did while marshalling the likes of the Crosses Walk when they did not have Smartphones or Blackberry’s to text each other or to read their emails?. Mick Lawson lent me a few drawings he produced in his day, below is the second of the series.

– Saturday 6 October just two months away. th

Please make sure the 6 is in your diary. Remember we need 13 staff to man the base, control, vehicles and sweep the route before we cover any check points. We also need people the night before to set up the venue and the equipment needed for each check point. We have approached a number of companies for sponsorship but perhaps team members could suggest other opportunities? The Raven Hall hotel sponsored part of the costs of the Falcon Flyer and Construction Marine Limited sponsored the ½ marathon. Please advertise the events to friends, colleagues, clubs and organisations. Remember entry fees are refunded if individuals raise more than £50 sponsorship for the team. Entry forms for the events are on the web site. We are also advertising with running clubs and walking groups. Let’s hope they all turn into entries. We saw a significant increase in entries for the Saltergate circuit last year and the Falcon this year let’s see if we can continue that success.

-4Whitby Emergency Services day

Notices

th

We spent Sunday 29 of July beside the bandstand in Whitby Harbour for the Emergency Services day. With weather alternating between glorious sunshine and pouring rain we could have had better conditions for the event however our stand was well attended and money dropped regularly into the buckets. We also had a good run on merchandise with whistles being particularly popular for some reason? The day was also a good opportunity to build and reinforce contact with members of the other services although Whitby Coastguard pushed such to the limit with the frequent demonstrations of their vehicles two tone horns and none of us could work out what Darth Vader had to do with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The team was well represented by associate team members, operation team members and family members and we encourage all team members to try to spend at least some time at these public relations events. The next event is Filey Emergency Services day on the 12th of August and Peter needs as many willing hands as possible.

UK MR Conference is 7-9 September this year in Leeds. It's now open for booking - and plenty of spaces still available. All members of voluntary rescue teams in the UK are welcome. Some fantastic topics and a great Saturday evening's entertainment lined up with Tim Mosedale, double Everest summiteer. For more information see: http://www.mrconference2012.org.uk/ The team will fund two places, names to Roger please.

The presentation of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service will take place on Monday evening on the 3rd of September. This is a very prestigious award and we would like as many team members as possible to attend the event. Lord Craythorne will present the award at our base. Full details will be distributed closer to the day however st please also keep the 1 of September clear for a base clean up followed by a BBQ at John R’s farm.
