EXPLORE SAN DIEGO

It’s wintertime in America’s Finest City! You won’t know it from the near-perfect weather and sunny days, but that’s what makes San Diego such a great place to visit any time of the year. In this issue you’ll find out the best places to find the tastiest fish tacos, how to have sky-high fun, area museums to explore and so much more. Check out our handy guide below to San Diego County and the maps in the back of the magazine to help you explore this amazing area!

NORTH COUNTY Carlsbad: A family-focused community home to LEGOLAND® theme park and Carlsbad Village with local favorites such as Ignite Bistro & Wine Spot, Coolest Shoes in California, Skinsational Spa and Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana. Oceanside: It’s the most northern tip of San Diego with a fun marina to explore, a relaxed atmosphere and great places to dine like Harney Sushi. Encinitas (also includes neighboring areas Leucadia and Cardiff by the Sea): Discover relaxed surf cities with a variety of beaches, cool and funky shops and boutiques along Highway 101, boho-chic hipsters and a vibrant surf and yoga culture. Make sure to check out Le Papagayo or Leucadia Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant while you’re here! Del Mar & Solana Beach: Casual and beachy towns with upscale shopping at Del Mar Plaza, horse racing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and dining at restaurants like Pacifica Del Mar and Red Tracton’s Steakhouse.

Watch a Video about Sail San Diego By: Madison Teague For some, winter is the time of year to stay inside and curl up by the fire, but that’s not the case in San Diego. Thanks to our near-perfect weather we’re able to spend the winter months out on the water soaking up the sun. With Sail San Diego, you can make lasting memories with friends and family when you head out on the open sea or sail the harbor on any one of their four gorgeous sailboats. This is a great way to celebrate holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and much more. They make it easy for you to sit back, relax and experience America’s finest city like never before. Sail San Diego offers 3-hour day sails, sunset sails and rum runner cruises, to name a few. And don’t forget this is the best time of year for whale watching too! You’ll have an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience watching these magnificent creatures swim beneath and beside you on their yearly migration south to warmer waters.

Sailing is also a luxurious and adventurous way to take in the gorgeous views of the San Diego skyline. The crew has been sailing for over 28 years, and each captain is experienced, knowledgeable and knows how to have a good time. Whether you’re with friends, family or total strangers, you’ll feel right at home with the Sail San Diego crew. They make the entire process extremely easy with no extra fees, no sales tax, no port tax, and no handling fees. And it gets better. All beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are complimentary! Did you forget your sunscreen? Sunglasses? Snuggie? No problem! Each boat is stocked with all the essentials. And yes, Snuggies are an essential. Last but certainly not least, parking is free! Their four incredible sailboats are spacious and insanely beautiful. The cockpits are large enough for 12 people, and typically each sailing excursion will have around seven people at most. There is plenty of room to spread out and get comfortable! The cabins have high ceilings so don’t worry about bumping your head as you go in and out. The kitchen area has expansive counter tops and a large refrigerator, perfect for lots of snacks and drinks.

RECREATION

By: Alisa Kerr Most people think of the typical land and water activities you can do at the beach, but did you know we offer plenty of fun up high? Check out our list of exhilarating activities you can do from above! Paraglide off Torrey Pines

Try something new and tandem paraglide at Torrey Pines Gliderport. They make it really simple to do: show up, sign a few papers, throw on a helmet, strap into a harness with a qualified pilot, run toward the edge of the 320-foot cliff and BAM — you’re airborne! Underneath you the Pacific Ocean glimmers all the way to the horizon and you can spot dolphins, seals, and sometimes whales from your overhead vantage point. For added excitement have your pilot do some acrobatic moves like sharp turns and drops! sandiegofreeflight.com, 858.452.9858

Hot Air Balloon Ride over Temecula

Rise to heights of 3,300-feet in the air and soar above Southern California’s wine country with a peaceful and exciting hot air balloon ride! During your ride, you’ll drop so low that the basket is skimming across the treetops, which inspired the Soarin’ Over California ride at Disney’s California Adventure Park. californiadreamin.com, 800.373.3359

Fly on the Trapeze

So there you are, standing on a tiny platform, high above the ground, holding onto a little bar on a string … and you’re supposed to jump off the platform, holding on only to the little bar on a string. It seems like a terrible idea until you actually make the leap, and then you’re flying through the air on a trapeze and it’s a thrilling ride! Soon you’re swinging from your knees, hurling into the arms of a stranger in midair, and flipping into a net below. trapezehigh.com, 619.318.0833

Zip Line

The longest zip line in the mainland United States is right here in San Diego … and it’s over the world-famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park! Yep, it’s true. Zip down 2/3 of a mile, 130-feet in the air, at 50 mph over the fields of wild animals, giving you a unique vantage point into the animals’ habitats. sdzsafaripark.org/safaritickets/flightline_safari.html, 619.718.3000

SD Pub Crawler does tons of themed crawls from holiday themes to private bachelor and bachelorette parties to everything in between. Whether you book a private crawl or hop onto a public crawl, it will be nothing short of a blast.

Walking from one bar to the next with a posse of pajamaclad partygoers was definitely an unforgettable sight. After the third bar, we all let our freak flags fly. Onesies were taking over every establishment. Every dance floor looked like a massive pajama party. Before the crawl, I was intimidated that I would have to show up by myself. To my surprise, I was one of many crawlers who showed up solo. This is a great way to socialize and interact with strangers in a safe, social and casual environment. It’s also a

LIKE A LOCAL

By: Madison Teague Whether you’re about to see a comedy show at The Civic Theater, or finishing up a long day of shopping at Horton Plaza, you’ve probably worked up a voracious appetite for delicious food and a filling beer or two. Stroll up Fourth Street in the Gaslamp Quarter to The Local Eatery & Drinking Hole where the beer, cocktails and incredible menu will satisfy all of your cravings. This family owned and operated restaurant has one simple philosophy, “Bring the beach and all things that define San Diego to Downtown.” This vision is made clear as soon as you walk through the door. The wide-open space of the restaurant and massive bar area is a comfortable space, which differs from most compact downtown establishments. The staff is warm and welcoming and treats you like a regular.

sugary texture of a churro with the warm and fluffy consistency of a waffle, drizzled with warm dulce de leche sauce. Now I think I know what heaven is like. The Local’s expansive coastal menu on top of San Diego’s favorite craft beers didn’t exactly fit under one roof. So they’ve decided to expand! The Resident Brewery and Tasting Room is the Local’s newest addition. The brewery and tasting room plans to open in January 2016 so make sure you pay a visit to the newest brewery in San Diego. This establishment is a brilliant reflection of what it means to be a San Diego local — delicious food, satisfying beer, amazing people, and of course, having the time of your life. thelocalsandiego.com, 619.231.4447

As my friends and I sat down we were instantly greeted by a friendly server who knew the specials like the back of her hand. She was incredibly knowledgeable and promptly brought my delicious Moscow Mule less than a minute after I ordered it. It took me about 45 minutes to decide what to order from the diverse menu. Everything looked too good! I decided on the Green Chicken Enchiladas. The chicken was slow cooked and the green chilies added just the right amount of spice. The cream cheese sauce was what really set it over the top. Every bite was better than the last. I was definitely satisfied with my decision. We also ordered their top selling Vietnamese Noodle bowl, which consisted of lemongrass, ground chicken skewers and fried lumpia over chilled rice noodles. The flavor of this dish was explosive and totally refreshing. The burgers are juicy, the tacos are savory, the salads are zesty, and the desserts? Well, let me just tell you about mine. We indulged in the Churro Waffle with Dulce De Leche. Just imagine the cinnamon and Photos by Jim Sloan Photography

SAFARI

Without Leaving San Diego! By: Carianne Steinman

Have you ever wanted to go on an African safari, but couldn't afford it? Or have you ever wondered what it is like to watch a cheetah run at full speed? Are you looking for a way to be entertained while also supporting a good cause? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the place for you! The Safari Park, sister park to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, is a breeding facility covering 1,800 acres, half of which have been set aside to protect native San Diego species and habitats. The Safari Park is a nonprofit organization focused on wildlife conservation, so every dollar you spend at the park goes toward helping conservation efforts. One of our favorite parts of the Safari Park is the African Plains enclosure, where several different species of animals roam together. Where else, besides Africa, will you get to see giraffes eating next to rhinoceroses while a herd of wildebeest walk by? In order to see the whole enclosure, you need to ride the tram, which is free with admission. Another one of our favorite things about the Safari Park is its great views of three of the most well-known big cats:

Lions, tigers, and cheetahs! Lion Camp offers a unique look at the king of the jungle relaxing in the sun or shade. Tiger Trail gives you a rare chance to see tigers up close, either hiding in the trees, laying on the rocks, or maybe even swimming near a waterfall. For the best view of the cheetahs, attend the Cheetah Run where you’ll see them run down a 330-foot-long track at full speed right in front of you! If you have children with you, the Safari Park offers plenty of things to entertain the little ones. Take them to the petting kraal to pet the goats, the Animal Ambassador Stage for an educational face-to-face experience with exotic animals or to splash around in one of the park’s “cool zones.” For additional costs you can ride the carousel or the zipline, tackle the Jungle Ropes course, or take a tour of the African Plains enclosure where you can feed the rhinoceroses and giraffes. You can also jump aboard a giant balloon for a nice view of the park. So what are you waiting for? Head to the Safari Park for a day you won't soon forget. EXPLORE

PACIFIC BEACH Pacific Beach is one of the main centers of nightlife in San Diego. Garnet Avenue, between Ingraham Street and Mission Boulevard, is where many bars and restaurants are located. The nightlife in Pacific Beach caters to a younger crowd than the nightlife in downtown San Diego. So if you are looking for a fresh scene, give Pacific Beach a shot.
