RECREATION

A truly unique and quintessential summer activity in San Diego is a day at the Del Mar Race Track, affectionately dubbed “Where the Surf Meets the Turf” by race enthusiast Bing Crosby in the 1930s. Celebrities, locals, and tourists flock to see and be seen while betting on ponies and sipping bubbly in the sunny stands. Here’s how you can enjoy a day at the track like a local! WHAT TO WEAR

While some areas of the track require dresses for women and jackets for men, the majority of the track is casual. Nice shorts, jeans, and sundresses are pretty standard attire. If you want to pick up some fancy new track-worthy duds, stop by Matti D's or one of the many shops at the Del Mar Plaza.

WHERE TO GRAB A PRE-RACE LIBATION

Hands down the most popular pre-race spot is Red Tracton’s, a cozy steakhouse across from the track with a piano bar, a nice wine selection, and a festive crowd of race fans.

WHERE TO SIT AT THE TRACK

Admission starts for as little as $6 per person and you can get reserved seats for an extra $5 to $10. For an even better experience reserve a table trackside so you can have comfy seats with a great view and table service. Tables start at $60 for a party of four.

WHERE TO GO AFTER

The fun doesn’t stop after the last pony crosses the post. Race goers congregate at En Fuego Cantina to party, The Brigantine to mingle with views of the track and ocean, or at beachfront Poseidon for a little more upscale but still festive dinner.

INFO AND OTHER TIPS

Opening day is July 15 and the season lasts until September 5! There are a variety of great concerts and events throughout the season not to be missed. Also consider buying your tickets in advance, arriving early for some free betting instructions, and lining up a ride so you don’t have to pay for parking. Make sure to check out the calendar of events at dmtc.com.
