GREEN DRAGON TAVERN & MUSEUM Take a Bite out of History!

Watch a Video about Green Dragon Tavern

By Madison Teague As you enjoy your day strolling the beach or visiting nearby attractions, you might want to stop and have a bite to eat. Or in this case, a bite of American history. While California has cultivated its own subculture, America’s rich history has a way of getting lost as you get closer to the West Coast. Green Dragon Tavern & Museum, located just minutes from the coast in Carlsbad, has changed that for San Diego.

While the environment will keep you coming back, the food will have you leaving with a smile. Their daily happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and all day on Sunday! If you’re looking for some great East Coast options, there’s no need to pack a heavy coat and fly across the country. Their menu is unbelievable. Just make sure you come with a hearty appetite because these portions are generous.

While this restaurant and admission-free museum may be found in a beach town, its colonial presentation is far from coastal. Here’s a little history lesson for you: The original Green Dragon Tavern, located in Boston, Mass., was where our founding fathers met and spoke about the American Revolution. Paul Revere took his famous ride past the original Green Dragon shouting his famous phrase, “The pickles are coming! The pickles are coming!” Excuse me, I meant to say, “The British are coming.” I must have their famous, homemade fried pickles on the brain.

If you have lobster in mind, you need to try their decadent Lobster Mac, made with juicy Maine lobster and a creamy mac-n-cheese sauce. Or try one of their many hot and buttery lobster rolls. And we can’t forget the clam chowder! It’s the absolute best in San Diego. They aren’t stingy with their clams, that’s for sure. This order is a meal in itself, so be ready to eat!

When you walk in, you’ll find the authentic ambiance really makes you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. What I really loved about GDT was the endless options you can create for yourself when you visit. You can grab a beer and stroll through the museum where you’ll find historical documents, artwork and exhibits. Or, you can choose a seat in the dining room where the upscale environment is perfect for any romantic occasion. You’ll also want to head over to the two-story tavern, where the craft beer is flowing and there’s a seat for everyone. Bring the kids, meet the coworkers or hang out with friends to watch the game. The tavern is lined with flat screens on both floors, so you won’t miss a single slam dunk, home run or field goal.

10 FALL 2015

| GETAWAY SAN DIEGO

After your meal, head over to their quaint and cozy coffee shop for delicious pastries and a little caffeine. You’ll need it after that hearty meal you just devoured. Their coffee shop is the perfect place to eat, sit and relax or just get a little work done. And for you history buffs out there, the coffee shop also includes a bookstore where you can purchase books and souvenirs about the American Revolution. You’ll even find something for the kids here too. Whether you’ve come to enjoy the history, the beer, the lobster, or the game, Green Dragon Tavern & Museum won’t disappoint. These pioneers of authenticity really nailed it, making Green Dragon Tavern worth waving a flag about. greendragontavernca.com, 760.918.2421

If you’re looking for the perfect answer to your kids saying “We’re bored!” and “There’s nothing to do!,” then make your way to Get Air Trampoline Park. With three locations to choose from in San Diego County — Vista, Poway and Temecula — they won’t have time to complain. They’ll be too busy jumping and bouncing around! The huge facility comes complete with every fun thing you can do on a trampoline — dodge ball, slam dunking, vertical trampolines and much more. If you’re not sure where to start, get your feet wet with the open-air trampolines where you can bounce to your heart’s content. Or hop into the foam pits to see who can jump the farthest. Test your jumping skills with the slam ball court or get into a good old-fashioned game of dodge ball (with a modern twist). By this time, you’ll be working

up a sweat! When that happens you can catch your breath with some slack line action. The slack line is a canvas rope roughly two inches wide anchored between two solid foundations. It’s a great test of balance and concentration. Make sure to try out the vertical trampolines, but keep in mind they are a little harder to get used to. For a really fun challenge you can unleash your inner ninja on their brand new Ninja Course! Walk the tight rope all the way across the treacherous foam pit, jump onto the rock climbing wall, make your way back through punching bags and jump over the foam pits to safety! There’s even a section for the littlest of kids to have fun. It’s the perfect place not only for kids, but grown-up kids too. Make sure to check them out online to schedule jump times, book a birthday party, read the safety rules and much more.

WINE & SPIRITS

Tour the Wine Country By: Marci Pascua Photography by Brant Bender

Most people associate San Diego with our beautiful beaches, but did you know we also have wine country? Just head inland and you’ll discover several areas boasting wineries to rival Napa Valley.

We chatted with the winemaker and owner who taught us the ins-and-outs of wine making and growing certain varietals. We had red wine tastings as they only specialize in that grape variety.

With San Diego Beer and Wine Tours, you will experience a sophisticated touring of the loveliest wineries San Diego has to offer. On this chauffeured six-hour wine country tour, you get to experience three fantastic local wineries chosen by your tour guide.

Our last stop of the day was the Cordiano Winery. This place had amazing views and authentic pizza baked in their stone pizza oven on the patio. We finished off the evening here with five tasters of wine from red Zinfandel to the Syrah and their most prized wine, the Trinity, which is a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet.

Our guide for the day was Paul Anthony and he was a blast. First, we headed east to the family owned Bernardo Winery. It’s nestled in a quiet, majestic neighborhood surrounded by the hills of Rancho Bernardo. We had the opportunity to have five tastings, so I started with the Chablis and ended my tasting with the tantalizing Orange Moscato Champagne and a Chocolate Port. Although the wine was amazing, it was even better to have a chocolate pairing with each tasting and a gourmet cheese platter to overload our palates with goodness. Our next stop was Highland Hills Winery, another family owned establishment in the rolling hills of Ramona.

After the tour, we jumped back into the van and headed downtown to drop off the other guests in the van and conclude our tour. What a wonderful day of making friends, chatting about wine with our poised pinkies, and oh yeah … let’s not forget the drinking wine part. The San Diego Beer and Wine Tours is the perfect daytime getaway with friends or a significant other to enjoy a fabulous day exploring San Diego wineries. They have an array of tours that can be enjoyed from beer tours and walking tours to train tours and wine country tours. Find out more and schedule your tours with a visit to their website or give them a call. sandiegobeerwinetours.com, 858.551.5115.

A SLICE OF COASTAL HEAVEN Photography by Marci Pascua

By: Madison Teague Looking for a place to fuel up before or after your day at Moonlight Beach? Stop by Leucadia Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant in Encinitas. This local hot spot is just a block away from the sand on Highway 101. Leucadia Pizzeria isn’t your typical Italian restaurant and is much more than just a pizza and pasta place. Lobster mac-n-cheese, sandwiches of all varieties, buffalo wings, spaghetti, calamari, pastries and baked goods are just a few options that comprise this eclectic menu. Enjoy a gorgeous evening with friends and family watching the sunset on their outdoor patio or stop in and grab a slice of carrot cake to go! Leucadia Pizzeria has endless choices on their menu and an atmosphere that allows you to make your experience exactly what you want it to be. If you’re looking for a traditional Italian meal there is plenty to choose from. The eggplant parmesan is a local favorite, crafted with layers of fried eggplant and mushrooms, drizzled in mozzarella cheese and served with a decadent spaghetti marinara sauce. Or split a pizza with the family after a successful day of ocean play. And the pear gorgonzola is amazing! This delicacy is topped with candied walnuts,

caramelized onions, dates, crisp pears, bleu cheese crumbles and mozzarella, then drizzled with garlic basil oil and baked with fresh arugula. Is your mouth watering yet? Try some of their other delicious pizza options like the lobster pizza, Hawaiian pizza, ricotta, spinach eggplant pizza, vegetarian and much more! Be sure to check out the extensive pasta menu as well. I recommend trying the delicious Chicken Marsala. This juicy chicken breast is sautéed with a rich, creamy Marsala wine and served with roasted garlic mushroom sauce over penne and a side of fresh veggies.

Be sure to save some room for dessert! You don’t want to miss the delicious pastries made in-house by Leucadia Pizzeria’s own pastry chef. Their Coconut Macaroons have officially stolen my heart. Try their hot and fresh cinnamon rolls or their unbelievable chocolate croissants. They also have incredible desserts including tiramisu, carrot cakes, cheesecakes and brownies delivered from local Encinitas bakeries. You will be more than satisfied with your coastal dining experience at Leucadia Pizzeria because they’re “more than just great pizza” with all of the delectable options they serve. leucadiapizza.com, 760.942.2222

Balboa Park, a primary cultural attraction in San Diego, began its origins in 1868 as 1,400 acres known as City Park. In 1910, park commissioners renamed it in honor of Spanish-born, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the first European to spot the Pacific Ocean while on exploration in Panama. At first, developments were minimal. But in 1908, major development took place with the decision to host the 1915-16 Panama-California Expedition to commemorate the opening of the Panama Canal. This year marks the 100-year anniversary of this historical occasion, and Balboa Park is having a year-long celebration of events recognizing the innovation, culture, architecture and natural beauty of this popular attraction. Hosting the 1915-16 Panama-California Expedition was the driving force for the creation of the park as it appears today. Most of the buildings along the famous El Prado Pedestrian walkway are of the Spanish-Renaissance style. The San Diego Museum of Man, the Cabrillo Bridge and the Spreckels Outdoor Organ Pavilion are just a few of the permanent structures left from this time period.

CARAVAN SAFARI. DEPARTING DAILY.

A second major event, the California Pacific International Expedition of 193536, sparked the next episode of major development and architecture. More museums, halls, gardens and even a Spanish Village were erected. Architecture of this time took on a history of the southwest, from early Aztec influences to Mexican-Pueblo style, art deco and art modern, which you can see when you visit the San Diego Automotive Museum, San Diego Hall of Champions, Zoro Gardens and the world-renowned Old Globe Theatre. Today, the park’s 1200 acres is home to 16 different museums, along with 16 individual gardens and nine attractions and venues. Some of these include the world-famous San Diego Zoo, the Inez Grant Memorial Rose Garden, the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.
