My Jersey

STEPHEN LE QUESNE

Stephen Le Quesne is a man of many talents; a naturalist, conservations, outdoor educator, qualified Safari Guide, amateur rewilder, trainee bird ringer, film-maker, cameraman and presenter. He developed a love of the natural environment at a young age, volunteering at Jersey Zoo and later with the Natural Trust for Jersey in their ranger team whilst he was studying his degree. He graduated from Bangor University in Wales with a BSc in Zoology and went on to attain his MSc in Zoo Conservation Biology from Plymouth University. When he’s not working for the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia or the Kalahari Meerkat Project in South Africa, he calls Jersey his home. We caught up with him to find out what he gets up to when he trades the wild plains of the Sahara for families of swifts at Gorey Castle.

Home is...

a small cottage in Havre des Pas. I currently live by myself with my elderly cat Smudge who I have had since I was a teenager, she’s now 18 years old. I consider a lot of the wild places I have visited as home, such as the Okavango Delta, Namibian desert or Sumatran rainforest where I met amazing individuals, but at the moment I am working on myself a bit and the fact that home is wherever I am. It is a work in progress.

My weekend routine... depends on the weather. Outdoor time is key, as is exercise. I am hopefully going to start training as a bird ringer soon which will take up my mornings and evenings.

The best brunch on the island... has to be at The Good Egg at Havre des Pas, it is only a 5 minute walk away from my new home which helps!

My favourite island walk is... the route from Les Platons to Bouley Bay and then loop round. You barely see any houses or people and it has a nice mixture of habitats. The route usually takes just over two hours which is a good walking distance.

To keep fit I... go to the gym as much as I can. I enjoy swimming and have been practising Martial Arts specifically karate for the past 20 years. Martial Arts is just as important for my mental wellbeing as it is for my physical fitness.

The shops I rely on... don’t currently exist. Besides my local supermarket I suppose. I would love an outdoor wilderness shop with bushcraft resources to open on the island. Failing that, an independent bookstore that also sells artwork and has visiting authors and speakers

would be incredible.

My restaurant recommendations would be.... any of the amazing beach cafes we are so lucky to have. I went to Plemont Beach Cafe the other week which was lovely.

To let my hair down I...

like to do outdoor jobs and environmental tasks. They wind my mind down much better than a pint would. Things such as tree planting, building dead hedges or a bit of woodwork. Saying that I recently visited Zambia and nothing beats a beer round the campfire, or just finding somewhere quiet to read a good book.

When friends visit I...

take them to the zoo and at least one beach, usually Plemont. It is undoubtedly my favourite bay on the island. It’s small, has great waves, a lovely little cafe and you only get a limited amount of time on the beach until the tide takes it back, which I love.

Inspiration for me is about...

a moment and a time as opposed to a location. Maybe, an autumn storm at Plemont during high tide or watching a family of swifts dancing in the sky at Gorey Castle in the summer.

At the moment I am working on...

my outdoor learning and rewilding business, which has meant a lot of emails, funding proposals and building a website. I am also working on how to build and move forward with my current safari guide and bushcraft qualifications. My own personal wellbeing is something I am always trying to improve - being

more present and putting into practice what I continue to learn from therapy. I have check in therapy sessions once every 2 months or so, basically a health check for my mind.

Green living

We’re all in agreement that this summer hasn’t been Jersey’s finest. Despite the sunnier days of late August, 2023 will not be remembered as the island’s driest or warmest summers. Look across the sea to our European neighbours however and it’s been an entirely different story. Back-toback heat waves brought sweltering conditions to parts of Greece, eastern Spain, Sardinia, Sicily and southern Italy where temperatures of over 45°C during July made it the world's hottest month ever recorded.

Scenes of tourists fleeing wildfires in Greece or trapped indoors unable to enjoy baking beaches in Spain, despite feeling worlds away from the rain-drenched streets of St. Helier, felt eerily close to home. Wildfires and such are usually news stories we see reported from the far-flung reaches of Australia or America. Europe is warming faster than most parts of the world, experts say. And that is a terrifying home truth, regardless of how wet and windy our summer has been.

Climate change has undoubtedly played an overwhelming role in the heat, and it is forecast to get worse as the average global temperature keeps rising. Such statements are dizzying and instantly make you want to do something—anything—to help. Knowing where to start is just as daunting a prospect as understanding the complexities of global warming (as the UN coined it), but believe it or not, there are a host of individual steps with a large collective impact. Which brings us neatly onto Greenwood in St. Peter. This brilliantly modern, four-bedroom family home has been built and designed with eco-sensitivity at its heart. LA MARE WINE ESTATE

Jordi Sanvicens Moreno is the head winemaker at La Mare Wine Estate, Jersey’s only working vineyard and distillery. Having worked in a variety of incredible regions around the world he is in the midst of his second winemaking season on the island and here he tells us more about both his journey to this point and how island winemaking differs to other places he has worked.

Can you tell us about your winemaking journey so far?

I cultivated my wine making skills in various vineyards around the world. My roots are in Catalonia, a region in North Eastern Spain renowned for its exceptional wines. Before arriving at La Mare, I had the privilege of managing and designing vineyards in diverse locations, from the famed wine-producing areas of Perpignan, France, to the vibrant vineyards of Clare Valley, Australia. My experiences span across different climates and terroirs, which has enriched my winemaking journey and prepared me for the exciting challenges and opportunities that La Mare Wine Estate presents.

My role as Head Winemaker is to allow nature to do most of the work in the vineyard and then, with passion and respect, continue the journey from grape to glass.

I’m not personally attached to a particu lar approach to winemaking because it’s the grapes and the terroir that define the style. I do, however, aim to produce wine with personality and character, wines that tell a story; the sea, the air, the soil. My vision is to capture the essence of Jersey in our exceptional wines.

Can you tell us about the wines you make at La Mare Wine Estate?

Our portfolio showcases a diverse range of wines that capture the essence of Jersey’s unique terroir and the passion of our team. We pride ourselves on producing wines that tell a story of craftsman ship and dedication, each bottle a testament to our commitment to quality.

Among our offerings, you’ll find an elegant Saint Marie white wine crafted from a carefully cu rated blend of Solaris, Orion, and Seyval Blanc. Our Perquage Rosé is equally captivating, radiating a delicate balance of fruitiness and freshness that’s perfect for sipping on sunny days. To make our rosé wine we allow the crushed red grape skins to soak in the white

juice. The longer the skins are left in contact with the juice, the more intense the colour of the final wine. Our Bailiwick wine is a dry red blend carefully crafted from a harmonious combination of Regent, Rondo, and the renowned Pinot Noir.

We also make Le Mourier, a sparkling gem that embodies the epitome of Jersey’s winemaking artistry. With a fine effervescence and distinctive character, Le Mourier is a true testament to the dedication that goes into every step of its creation. We don’t just make wine at La Mare we also make a selection of ciders and spirits using our traditional Alembic Charantais Cognac distillery.

How does growing vines and crafting wine differ here in Jersey to other places you’ve worked?

Jersey presents an exciting challenge. The maritime influence and distinct microclimate require a careful balance of nurturing and adaptation. Having managed vineyards across the globe I’ve had the privilege of witnessing how terroir shapes flavours. Here in Jersey, we’re on the same latitude as Champagne and Alsace, and the island’s warmth, combined with the soil’s acidity, brings forth remarkable character in our wines.

How long is the wine making process, do you get to put your feet

The winemaking process is a symphony that unfolds over the seasons. From pruning in frosty winters to nurturing buds in spring, and the excitement of harvest in autumn, it’s a constant cycle of dedication. While the pace shifts, winter is a time for refining techniques, planning, and yes, tasting and blending. But there’s no putting our feet up – the quest for excellence continues.

Any top tips for aspiring winemakers?

For aspiring winemakers, I offer this: Embrace every facet of the craft, from vineyard to cellar. Patience is key, as each vintage is a new story waiting to be told. And remember, it’s the grapes and terroir that guide your approach, shaping each wine’s unique character. Stay curious, learn from your peers, and let the journey from grape to glass be your ultimate inspiration.

BEST RATES

MORTGAGE market update

On 3 August 2023, The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee raised interest rates for the 14th meeting in a row. Rates were increased by 0.25 % to 5.25%, the highest they have been since April 2008. The results for the next MPC meeting will be published on 21st September.

INFLATION FORECAST

The Bank is increasing interest rates in response to high inflation, which stood at 6.8% in July this year, down from its peak of 11.1% in October 2022., but still well above the MPC’s target of 2%. The MPC also published new forecasts for the economy where it expects inflation to fall to around 5% by the end of this year/ beginning of 2024, before falling to a forecast 3% over the next few years.

INCREASED MORTGAGE TERMS

Most lenders have now introduced terms of up to 40 years to reduce the monthly cost of servicing a mortgage. This was traditionally 25 years but has increased over the years as homes have become more expensive to purchase. By lengthening the term, a borrower spreads their payments over a longer period so reducing the monthly cost. Unfortunately, this also means that the overall cost of the mortgage will increase because the borrower has to continue to pay interest on the loan for longer.

PROPERTY PRICES FALLING

Property prices in Jersey peaked at an abnormally high level in August last year, although it is clear that asking prices are now falling and there is evidence that the market might be slowly picking up again, as vendors lower their prices in an attempt to match the maximum that borrowers can obtain from mortgage providers.

The approximate 20% reduction in asking prices does not seem to have been enough however, and it is generally felt that prices will have to reduce by a further 15% for the market to return to a certain amount of reality.

INCOME MULTIPLES

Income multiples of 6 times gross income, sometimes more, are now becoming history which is the reason why the local housing market will have to adjust downwards.

A classic example of the problems that we face is illustrated by the experience of a young couple who came to The Mortgage Shop seeking advice before looking at the market.

With a 10% deposit, a 40 year mortgage term available, a gross income of £105,000 pa and no children, debt or other liabilities whatsoever, a year ago we would have been easily able to obtain a mortgage of £630,000 plus, so accessing a purchase in the region of £700,000.

A search of the whole of the market in August this year produced mortgage options ranging between £450,000 and £517,000, so reducing the maximum purchase price to between £500,000 and £574,000 – a huge drop in purchasing power.

Interest rates are not going to return to the record lows that we have seen in recent years, which means that the only way the local housing market can become active again, is for prices to fall.

NUMBER OF PROPERTIES ON THE MARKET

On a more positive note, a look at the pages of places.je shows that there are 1562 properties currently on the market, of which 437 are in the First Time Buyer range up to £500,000 and 476 in the range from £400,000 up to £700,000.

These figures clearly show a potentially active market for the future, with great news for First Time Buyers in respect of choice and reducing asking prices.

LATEST INTEREST RATES

A comparison between the lowest rates available in January this year and those available at the time of going to press, shows that it is still wise to fix for five years, although before making the final decision, it is best to seek advice from your mortgage broker or lender.
