To let my hair down I…

Love to cook a slap-up meal for my favourite people, washed down with a bottle (or two) of something delicious. The best nights are about the people you spend them with, and I’m very lucky that I’m still really close to a lot of my childhood friends –we’ve just swapped nights at the Platinum foam party for nights in with a bottle of fizz!

The best cocktails in Jersey are…

At The Watchmaker. I pretty much have a standing reservation there! I love that they’ve brought a beautiful old building back to life. And you really can’t go wrong with a nice glass of wine (or two) to start the evening or end the night.

When friends visit, we go to…

Durrell Zoo, especially if we’ve got kids in tow. I’d also want them to get a feel for the island, so we’d probably go for a walk from town to St Aubin and stop for a glass of wine at Enoteca or head east and walk along the front to Mont Orgueil with a pit stop at The Moorings. Breakfast at La Braye and a walk to the Splash is a great way to kick off a day if it’s sunny and I’d probably throw in some history too with a wander around one of the castles or the War Tunnels. There’s a lot to see on our little island!

My secret swimming spot is…

When you hop over the wall from La Rocque Harbour to Robin Bay! It’s a sun trap but when the tide is in it’s a perfect spot for a dip.

My restaurant recommendations include…

I take everyone to Awabi as soon as they get to the island! The food is spot on, and I love that you could go there on a date, with a group of friends or take your Nan and have the best night. Get the chicken wings and a bottle of Grapefruit Soju – thank me later.

Home is…

An apartment that I fell in love with instantly because of the wonderful views across St Helier. There’s nothing quite like standing on your balcony on a summer’s evening, watching the world go by and hearing the hubbub of your neighbours enjoying the sunshine. I love the walkability of living in St Helier and that I can do everything I want to do without ever getting in a car. But, if I had to be out of town then St Brelade would cinch it for me because it’s got a real holiday feel!

My weekend begins with…

A good workout then a fancy takeaway coffee and a walk along the seafront with friends. It’s the perfect way to relax into the weekend and it stops me working! Sunday’s are sometimes a work day for me, but they always involve a walk and probably a few episodes of a rubbish US cop show (my guilty pleasure.)

The best island walk is from…

St Brelade’s to Ouaisne. There’s an amazing view of Ouaisne just as you go over the top of the headland and it never gets old. And of course, you can grab a yummy snack from Kismet on the way.

My favourite spot for brunch…

I love Locke’s. Great food, wonderful team, and the best coffee. If I’m out of town, then the Hungry Man has got to get a mention. You can’t beat a bacon roll with that view!

The shop I couldn’t live without is…

Harriet and Rose. It is a breath of fresh air on our high street. Packed full of treasures that are lovingly selected from fantastic, ethical small businesses. I never leave that shop without a little treat for someone I love and can always find a gift in there for the difficult people to buy for!

The best meal I’ve ever had…

Was last year when I had the best Sunday Lunch and Bloody Mary combo at Upstairs at Anley. We laughed, we drank gorgeous cocktails, and we rolled out of their full to the brim with roast potatoes. Can’t beat it.

I feel most inspired…

Sitting in the dark of a theatre when you’re transported to another world for a few hours, I never tire of the magic of that! Ever since I was a kid, going to the theatre has been a huge source of inspiration and joy for me and we’re so lucky to have an amazing community theatre in The Jersey Arts Centre. I have recently been appointed as their Chair and I am excited to help them share this magic with more islanders in the coming Years.

Right in the centre of St Helier. It’s great to have a space dedicated to the business and it helps that it’s a stone’s throw from my gym, Awabi and the Watchmaker!

Old meets new....

The story of L’Etacq is deeply affected by its surroundingsthe rocky cliff faces alone gave the area its name. For centuries it was the main base for fishermen living west of the island and its nutrient rich côtils and proximity to the sea has seen not just fishing but farming featuring heavily in its history.

Jersey folklore recounts that 650 years ago, a man called John Willis owned a large house - the Manor of La Brecquette, at L'Etacq. It was surrounded on two sides by a forest of oak trees. One year, waves moved up St. Ouen's beach and began to flood the land. The sea rose until it covered the manor, and eventually it blanketed the oak forest as well. When the tide is very low at St. Ouen, you can supposedly still see black tree stumps - the petrified forest, all that remains of the oak trees that once surrounded the manor. It is something of a glorious contradiction then that Belle Vue even exists. Here sits a completely refurbished property, in outstanding condition, perched proudly amongst such history and folklore tales. CRUMBTIOUS

Danielle Schausberger started Crumbtious in 2018 baking delicious custom made-to-order cupcakes, cookies and cakes for all occasions. The business started life in her home country of South Africa and migrated to Jersey when Danielle and her husband relocated their family here a few years later. If you’ve not tried her cakes yet then be sure to track her down and if you can resist the temptation of one of her chocolate cream pie cupcakes (homemade marshmallow fluff dipped in chocolate) then you’re better people than we are!

Can you tell us how Crumbtious got its name?

I had a shortlist of names for the longest time. My brother actually came up with Crumbtious, it was just perfect and I fell in love! All cakes are great but my cakes are totally Crumbtious!

Are you a full-time baker?

Yes, I am, but this was not always the case. I have degree in fashion design and clothing management and I have been working in the clothing industry all my life. This background has ensured that my cakes not only look creatively beautiful but more importantly taste great!

How did you first learn to bake? And where does your inspiration for new recipes/ideas come from?

It all started with my mother. She also had an arts background and she was such a creative being and a dream role model for me growing up as there was nothing she couldn’t do. Growing up, dinner time was always an event with either family or friends. She also owned a coffee shop in the beautiful Wine lands of the Cape. All this contributed to me living out my creativity in baking. My inspiration would come from my eagerness to learn and explore new things, paging through new (and old) recipe books and of course, my two daughters who always pitch in with wonderful and colourful suggestions.

Do you have any specialities?

I love my shortbread cookies! They have also been such a huge hit with the corporates to either celebrate events, as a thank you to clients, or just for promotional events. I have also been known to melt a few hearts with my marshmallow pie cupcakes and I am working on some seriously delectable Christmas cakes for the festive season.

Can you tell us about your DIY biscuit boxes?

This is all about fun and giving mom and dad a break while the kids showcase their creativity. I make several different DIY kits, some are themed, like my Easter and Christmas kits (which include gingerbread houses), some incorporate fun themes that both boys and girls can enjoy, like my “Summer Holiday” or ‘Pizza’ themed boxes. These kits are also very useful during the long winter months when parties and activities are mostly held indoors.

Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, what’s your favourite thing in your range?

I do and don’t, I honestly prefer something a little less sweet, like my carrot cake and my special red velvet cake, both of these have slightly warmer flavours like nuts, dark chocolate and cream cheese

What’s your favourite sweet treat to make? I love immersing myself in themed party cakes. This year alone I have done some wonderful ones, ranging from beautiful floral cakes, number cakes, sportsthemed cakes, as well as Disney and comic book heroes and of course, plenty of baby showers, never a dull

Who does the cooking at home?

Mmmmmmm…..lucky for me, my husband could have been a chef in another life We both love food and cooking.

Do you have any new things coming up we

Summer is here, and so are the holidays, my cookie kits are flying to all corners of the island to keep the kids busy. I am also hosting a few creative workshops at the Jersey Harbour Gallery, including Tie Dye, hand sewing as well as cookie decorating classes. In between all this, I will be in the lab (the kitchen) brewing up a couple of new flavour cupcakes which I will be posting on the socials. Finally, as mentioned, the Christmas Cakes are literally being prepared, with fruit, spices and nuts already soaking up the rum in time for the Genuine Jersey Christmas market at the end of the year. BEST RATES

MORTGAGE market update

For the 13th consecutive time, The Bank of England has increased Base Rate to 5%, with economists now suggesting that further rises to possibly 6.5% will be required in the desperate attempt to reduce UK inflation.

STRESSED RATE

After the Financial Crisis in 2008 and 2009, all mortgage providers introduced a second level of underwriting before agreeing to lend. This involved seeing if applicants could afford their mortgage at a much higher ‘’stressed rate’’, and it is this policy which is currently responsible for so few mortgage applications being approved at the level required to match the prevailing high prices in the local housing market.

JERSEY HOUSING MARKET

Jersey has usually enjoyed a buoyant and busy housing market outside of the crisis years and this lead post Covid, to a significant increase in property values which benefited many vendors, but which also created huge problems for first time buyers and also those who wished to trade up, due to the increased size of deposit required, higher stamp duty and also legal fees.

HOUSE PRICES STARTING TO FALL

Since the beginning of the year, there has been a downward shift in asking prices, although mortgage rates are increasing faster than prices are coming down.

The reality is that many sellers have not yet come round to the fact that they will not be able to sell for anywhere near the prices that were being achieved up to the end of last year, and as a consequence we are now approaching a total impasse in the market.

We are now hearing of reductions on some transactions of up to 20%, although this is still not enough to kick start the housing market, as it is taking too long for vendors to come to terms with the fact that all property has reduced in value.

The latest surge in interest rates, and the promise of further hikes, means that most borrowers will find that their borrowing power has dropped by a third, which translates into the need for the market to fall by in excess of 30% - it is feared that this will have to increase once rates are put up later this year.

EXISTING BORROWERS

The much larger problem which has yet to surface is the plight of many existing borrowers whose fixed rates come up for review later this year or into 2024. UK government intervention with all onshore lenders, is resulting in borrowers being able to

access payment holidays, conversion from repayment to interest only, the extension of the mortgage term and other variations on this theme.

It is hoped that Jersey’s lenders will be able to follow suit, as this will help reduce the stress from which many borrowers would otherwise suffer.

BEST RATES THIS MONTH

These show an increase in tracker rates which is to be expected , whilst fixed rates have surprisingly not shown much movement – in the current climate, 5-year fixed rates look to be advisable, whilst the few 10-year fixed rates could be seriously worth thinking about. See rates above.
