We caught up with Tom to find out what he gets up to outside of client time, his favourite places to unwind and a cryptic secret swimming spot

Home is...
Currently a lovely little cottage in St Peter with my wife Georgie and our son Frederik whilst we renovate an old dairy conversion in the depths of God’s parish. We’ve loved staying in St Peter thanks to the amazing garden which includes a pond. I don’t think our son will want to leave! It’s the perfect place to wake up on a Saturday morning, replace a ‘serious’ head with a childlike one and go have some imaginative adventures with our son. I don’t book a lot on the weekends to be honest, my weeks can be very busy and I love reserving quality time for family and having less structure, more nature and I’d be lying if I didn’t say more food!
Favourite island walk?
I’ve recently been training for my first trail ultra and whilst it shouldn’t be classed as walking, I’m finding the cliff paths tough and a lot of the routes I take do get walked! My current favourite would have to be the north coast stretch from Les Landes to White Rock. There is so much diversity in the surroundings despite it being cliff paths; the colours,

sounds and views - it doesn’t seem to get old. As a family we love the little walks down in the Jersey National Park in St Ouens, Portlet Common and Jardin d’Olivet above Bouley bay. Let’s not forget the magical St Catherine’s Woods which our son loves!
The best brunch on the island?
We really are spoilt for choice over here and my preference would be based more on where I am then where to go. On a weekday it’s got to be Lockes, but on the weekend we head to Sands. And who doesn’t like a little nude beach…the cafe that is.
Any shops you couldn’t live without?
Coop, Waitrose, Scoop, 100% Health and The Heliers Farm in St Ouen.
Describe your perfect day spent on the island?
Whilst a spring sunrise surf may be few and far between, it’s without a doubt the best wake up and start to the day for me, followed by a coffee on the beach (maybe some banana bread too). Last summer we made our paddle boards ‘toddler proof’ and spent time exploring different areas around the island, especially the North West caves which Frederik loved. After a good swim, a spearfish to attempt to catch dinner, or the easier option of picking up a good steak from the butcher up in St John I’d finish the day cycling through our beautiful lanes down to meet friends and family on the beach for a surf and sundowner BBQ!
Any restaurant recommendations?
I know it seems biassed being a part of the clan but if it’s a lovely summer’s day and you enjoy seafood, you’ve got to try Faulkner Fisheries seafood BBQ at The Bunker at L’Etacq, St Ouen - you just can’t beat simple seafood done well with a drink and one of the worlds best views! Another has to be Portelet Bay Cafe, as there’s not many places where you can have a swim, pizza and wine in such a beautiful setting!.
So what was the best meal you’ve had in Jersey?
As cliche as it may sound, our wedding meal! After a wedding venue fell through at the last minute, as often happens in sudden unforeseen circumstances, the good in humans came through and we were able to enjoy the most special and memorable day. With world class food delivered in the most relaxed and sensational way by Vicky and Chris from Binney and Border, in an amazing yurt from Cole at Jersey Tipi, in a field kindly offered to us overlooking the beach near La Saline, St Ouen, we enjoyed everything from African drumming and Latin Jazz to ‘Sweet Caroline’, accompanied with fluids flowing from the very helpful and knowledgeable team at Love Wine! We had 25 degrees all day and after sunset a large front of weather came towards us and seemed to pause a mile out a sea to leave a sky of stars and a full moon shining above. We couldn’t have asked for more.
Any secret swimming spots?
Well it wouldn’t be a secret if I shared but for a swim, here’s a clue… round the corner from the bay where the razor fish lay, is a spot named after a spice that you place in a pot! If you know, you know…

What’s your favourite beach?
A tough one… probably St Ouen’s bay - essentially 7 main ‘spots’ and a rapidly changing tidal system which brings so much diversity and beauty and never remains the same. It’s a place that holds a lot of memories for myself, from travelling to the island to see family in my early childhood to learning to surf and hunting in rock pools.
Where on the island do you feel most inspired?
Just going for a walk on the beach, through the forest or especially jumping in any of our beautiful swim spots, awakens, refreshes and inspires me both personally and professionally. As much as I’d love to take a portable bench and work remotely from the beach, it might not always be the most practical for clients or the weather. So we’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making the surrounding and atmosphere in both of our offices calming, rejuvenating and I find, inspiring, to both help us do our best work as well as, I hope, allow people to enjoy peace and feel relaxed during their time with us.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I’m working on a number of things, but most importantly, delivering the best possible care and experience we can through innovating Chiropractic techniques we use at Human Health.

Marc Mccarty
Marc is not only the only glass blower in Jersey but in the Channel Islands as a whole. He works from, and runs a small studio, at Devil’s Hole, opposite the Priory Inn where you can go and visit him to watch him make his beautiful hand-blown vessels, sculptures, and lighting. He’s been blowing glass for several decades (we’ve done the maths!) and having watched it ourselves we can tell you it’s a sight to behold!
Tell us what it is that you do?
Essentially, I form beautiful objects, by gathering liquid glass on a metal tube. I then add air by blowing down the tube to inflate the glass. I then use a variety of shaping techniques to form the glass into the desired shape. But quite often, it’s the undesired shape that wins! Which is what makes it so cool!
How did you learn to be a glass blower?
I studied Hot Glass Manipulation and Sculpture at Wolverhamp ton University back in 2003, leaving with a BA (Hons) degree. I then won a scholarship to go Seattle’s Pilchuck Glass school in the USA where I continued my studies. The rest of my skills have been self-taught learning curve of pure trial and error.
What is it you love most about your craft?
I love it when I show people hot glass for the first time, there eyes shine with the wonderment of hot liquid glass. They almost can’t believe it’s possible, like a magical thing is happening before them as the molten glass turns from a hot molten drop into something simply wonderful to behold. It reminds me that the things I do, are very old and magical.
Do you take commissions?
Yes, I take on jobs for customers and am happy to work with them to see what we can create. I can make sets of drinking vessels and tableware. I design and make lighting. I have also made sculptural work for many different environments, and I also make memorial glass with ashes from the cremato rium, and this has to be commissioned. This is a particularly special thing to be involved in, helping people to hold their loved ones close to them, captured in glass.
Have you ever made something you can’t part with?
There is a special place in my heart for every single object I have ever made, but parting with it is a massive part of the design cycle. Making customers truly happy with their new object of desire brings me great joy and it pays the gas bills.
Can people come and watch you working?
My studio is based up at Devil’s Hole, right next to the pub, and is open to the public. I get many visitors throughout the year, which is fantastic. Just recently I had a visitor travel from Scotland to see me and commission a special piece. The best thing to do is keep an eye on my social media channels as I often post on there when I’m planning to blow.

My work is for sale at my studio/shop in St Marys opposite the Priory Inn at the Devil’s Hole. Despite the announcement at the end of May that UK inflation had fallen, this was nowhere near enough to prevent extreme concern for the UK economy, with most commentators predicting that the Bank of England will have to further increase Base Rate in an endeavour to reduce inflation.
MORTGAGE RATES WILL RISE
The impact of this news is that mortgage rates will have to continue rising, although it is useful to look at the underlying interest swap rates, which provide an insight into the long-term cost of borrowing, and these are currently hovering around 4.5% for the next five years.
In the short term however, providers, whilst offering borrowing amounts based upon joint income multiples of up to six times, are still likely to review the rules that they apply to the approval of a mortgage application in respect of affordability.
THE STRESS TEST
What this means is that whilst a borrower can choose from a range of different interest rate options, they must still pass a Stress Test as well. Lenders will look at whether or not a borrower will still be able to meet their monthly repayments, plus all other budgeted expenditure, if mortgage rates were to increase to a specific amount. Currently, Jersey lenders are using Stress Rates in the range of 8% - 10.64%.
SHOP AROUND
Existing borrowers who have fixed rates coming up for review do not usually have to pass the Stress Test if staying with their current provider, although with mortgages being one of the largest financial commitments that many people face in their lifetime, it is important to watch out for potential pitfalls when your current rate comes up for review. One potential pitfall that many get caught in, is failure to do anything and by default remaining with their current lender, without ascertaining if they offered the best option.

PROPERTY FOR SALE
Looking at the postings on the property website places. je, there are currently 1,393 listings on the site, of which 380 are in the First Time Buyer range up to £500,000. In addition, 136 listings are properties in the price bracket of £600,000 to £700,000, with many of these being three bed houses – a clear indication that asking prices are reducing.
HOUSE PRICE INDEX
The latest figures released from Statistics Jersey were expected to show a noticeable drop in the average price of property sold in the first quarter of the year. In fact, and despite a significant fall in the number of transactions, there was only a modest reduction in house prices and this is attributable to the fact that many of the transactions during this period were the eventual sale of new builds carried over from 2022, which had the effect of keeping the index at a higher level than what is being experienced in the market. The unfortunate outcome of this is that vendors will continue to hold out for 2022 prices for property that has in reality fallen by up to 20%. Whilst this situation continues, so the market will remain stagnant.
