DJ Darcy Kelly hosts the 2-6pm show on BBC Radio Jersey and Guernsey every weekday afternoon. The 23-year-old began her radio career in 2018 when she joined Channel 103 for their evening show and has since been making (air)waves on local radio as well as BBC Radio 1 - where she’s hosted a Christmas special and her own show ahead of the main Friday Breakfast show with Greg James. When she’s not spinning decks or sampling cocktails at La Bouche, you’ll find her catching up with friends or savouring the sunset at St Ouen’s.

Home is?

In St Helier with my boyfriend. We moved in together in April 2021 which was scary and exciting at the same time. We are settled in now and it really feels like home except when he leaves his crisp packets everywhere and the loo seat up.

My weekend ritual involves...

Friday nights are usually spent in bed watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race, followed by a lie-in on Saturday morning. There is no way you’re getting me out of bed before 9.30am! I like to pop into town and browse around the shops, maybe getting lunch with my mum and sister. Saturday night I always plan something fun with friends. It’s important to let your hair down. Sundays may be spent feeling a little tender but it’s easily treated by long walks, Star Wars marathons and a good roast dinner.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

I love a drink and boogie in Ce Soir! I’m not much of a nightclub girl – I much prefer a bar with music where you can have a drink, chat and dance in your seat. I also have two left feet so a dancefloor is a dangerous place for me. I give Will from Inbetweeners vibes.

Best cocktail in Jersey?

You’re asking the right person! It depends what you want, La Bouche in the Central Market does a cracking Amaretto Sour. But Kings Bar does the most amazing Pornstar Martini.

The best brunch on the island?

I’m a big fan of The Yard at the Jersey Museum. They do a great brunch and the coffee is STRONG but tastes so good. The whole vibe is me to a T – I want all of their crockery in my house. Their menu is a great mixture of sweet and savoury and their dishes always have that wow factor that you want from a really great meal.

Where do you take friends when they visit?

Jersey Zoo – you can’t beat it. It’s such a happy place and the work they do is so important. Gerald Durrell is a huge part of Jersey’s history. I always make sure I give visiting friends a tour of the island in my car and if my sister is with me, she can give them a history lesson as she’s a teacher. It’s like having a personal tour guide.

Any favourite eateries?

I love El Tico especially in the summer as the view is unbeatable – my go-to order is the jungle curry, maybe with a side of chips. The Malteser cheesecake for dessert too is *chef’s kiss*. One of the best meals I’ve had in Jersey was in Awabi. I can be a picky eater but decided to push myself out of my comfort zone at Awabi and it was worth it! So many little dishes with so much flavour, the lettuce steak wraps were a highlight for me.

Best beach?

It has to be St Ouen’s Bay. The sunset, the food you can get, the ice-cream vans, the waves, the length of it and it’s just bloomin’ gorgeous. I also have so many precious memories at St Ouen’s with my friends – socially distanced BBQs during Covid, attempting to surf, boogie boarding when the waves were non-existent and watching the sun going down in the boots of our cars!

Any secret swimming spots?

I love the little slip in St Aubin’s when the tide is high- it’s quite a secluded spot near the yacht club and it’s amazing because you can just dip in and out.

What are you working on at the moment?

My show focuses on community stories – people who’ve done remarkable things in the Channel Islands so my mornings are spent producing content around that. Alongside the community stories, I get the amazing opportunity to chat to some pretty cool people – I’ve interviewed Lemar, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Faye Tozer, Love Islanders, Lionesses, and more! It’s the best job ever.

Chris Ching of Mana Wood is a self taught woodworker who gave up a career in the Finance industry last year to focus on his craft. He’s now turning his hand (not literally) to all manner of beautiful, intricate work including mastering the art of the chessboard.

Can you tell us about how ManaWood started?

My woodworking started out with small projects around the house, mini stairs to help the corgi up onto the bed (he’s too short) and making wooden planter boxes for my partners succulent plant displays. As my skills and confidence improved I found myself really enjoying the process and eventually moving onto more complex items like jewellery boxes and chessboards. My first large project was a brilliant opportunity to make a set of boxes for a local restaurant to serve their petit fours dessert course (it was Bohemia if you’re wondering!*ed)

Where does the name come from?

Mana is a term that refers to a type of magical energy or power that is used by characters in games/movies. I love all things nerdy and it seemed quite fitting when taking a raw material and transforming it into something special.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Growing up in Jersey and visiting L’Etacq Woodcraft as a child was such a great memory and always stayed with me. Now that I’m older and have some space to be creative, I really enjoy making things knowing that the pieces I make will live on with other people, hopefully bringing them some joy. Whether it be a set of dominoes or chessboard that is enjoyed by families/ generations.

How did you learn your craft?

It started off small and by trial and error, working it out for myself with basic tools I already had and slowly became more advanced with each project I decided to take on. Most of my learning has been from some amazing online resources such as woodworking publications and videos where I spent a lot of time learning about safety and the limits of the machines/tools before taking on more advanced projects.

What is your favourite thing to produce?

I really enjoy making things that people will use and love, chessboards are my latest step into the tabletop games arena along with personalised domino sets. When people get in contact to have something like this made, it’s usually part of a story about how family/friends have connected over a game they love and they want to have something special made.

Can you tell us a bit more about your chessboards? What is it that made you start making them?

Many of my earlier designs featured a checkerboard pattern. I’ve always loved how a chess set looks on display and took inspiration for some of my boxes/cutting boards. After my first Genuine Jersey Christmas market I discovered how popular chess has become with the younger generations and gave me a brilliant opportunity to start making high quality boards. I’m currently working on designs for chess pieces too!

Depending on whether I’m preparing for a market or a personalised order, it begins with digital designs of what I am making, once planned out, I mill raw lumber to the needed dimensions and begin building the project. This may involve a visit to my local hardwood supplier to select the right wood/grain pattern and ends with a lot of sanding and finishing. It’s all done from my mini workshop at home and often sprawls out around the house as I try to find space to lay everything out. I hope to build a workshop this year so we can reclaim our living space!

Mortgage market update

Looking To The Weeks Ahead

This is an important time for the local property market, as the Bank of England Base Rate is predicted to increase to 4.50% by the middle of May, whilst the latest results from the Jersey House Price statistics will be released later in the month.

After a very slow start in the first quarter, there is more activity in the market and vendors seem to be acknowledging the fact that their properties no longer have the value they had enjoyed up until Autumn last year.

It would seem from the consensus of opinion from agents that we have spoken to, that prices have fallen between 15% and 20%, although this will be confirmed in due course by the quarterly figures produced by the States’ Statistical Office. The Quarter 1 figures should be released later this month, although the full impact of price reductions is unlikely to be seen until the end of Quarter 2.

The Stalling Buy-To-Let Market

It is also apparent that the Buy to Let market has virtually ground to a halt as increased purchase costs linked to higher BTL mortgage rates no longer make an investment viable unless the buyer does not need a mortgage.

Nick Dodsley, the chair of the Jersey Estate Agents Association has commented: ‘’Vendors are dropping their asking prices, but there remains a distinct difference in the market from previous years. The unfortunate intervention of the Government in the property market by introducing a buy to let / second home stamp duty of 3% has not helped either the sales, or the letting market, or young Vendors seeking to sell their apartments, as its imposition has taken a ready pool of buyers out of the market.’’

Is The Property Market Recalibrating?
