My Jersey CHRIS CLIFFORD

Chris Clifford is the founder of Jersey’s first bespoke modern & contemporary art consultancy business. Educated at Victoria College, he went on to study Fine Art in London before establishing his local gallery Private and Public. Outside of the artworld, Chris enjoys sourcing local ingredients from Central Market for home cooking, sampling the wine menu at Watchmakers and beating the crowds at Jersey’s Amalfi Coast for a morning dip.

Where’s home?

I live in Grouville because it’s quiet, has beautiful green lanes, a huge expanse of beach, is near Gorey’s restaurants and is only a 10 minute drive to St. Helier. Its sedate vibe is very much part of its charm and the fact that you can almost always see France is weirdly reassuring when living in Jersey can feel insular and claustrophobic at times.

The best brunch on the island?

Is in my kitchen. I adore cooking and my current favourite lazy, late morning dish is a short rib terrine in which the beef is sliced paper thin and interleaved with a light aspic, bound in a mandolined carrot to form an artistic frame and served at room temperature allowing the jelly to hold whilst I drizzle pumpkin and tarragon oil over the top. I’m addicted to coffee - especially the ones served by the excellent Barista’s at Bean Around the World and Café JAC which are both only a short walk from the gallery.

And to walk that off?

Jersey is blessed with a huge variety of diverse and beautiful walks both inland and along the coastline but if you want to be transported into an alternative reality that is visually stunning then walk to Seymour Tower at low tide in which you are immersed into a lunar landscape with huge sculptural rock formations. It’s right out there!

Do you have a favourite beach?

For several years I lived in one those hugely controversial residential apartments overlooking Portelet Bay. I liked living there despite all the negative comments I’d receive, what I loved most of all was the close proximity to the beautiful beach and the quite brilliant Portelet Bay Café. After a warm summer’s evening swim there can be no better feeling then sitting with your toes in the sand whilst eating a delicious slice of pizza as the light fades.

Any secret swimming spots?

There was a time before the ’30 Bays in 30 Days’ tribe parked their 4x4’s next to every beach and slipway in Jersey that you could enjoy a quiet swim almost anywhere. The steps at the back of Gorey Pier lead you to a magical place which relatively few people ventured to for a high tide summer swim. It’s a ridiculously beautiful setting with crystal clear waters and dramatic views of the Castle and whilst it’s lost none of its beauty the old regulars have renamed it ‘The Amalfi Coast’ as finding a rock upon which to lay your towel is becoming increasingly more challenging!

Shops you couldn’t live without?

The unthinking auto-response is Waitrose where I seem to spend at least half an hour each day but it simply does not compare to St. Helier’s Central Market which offers a far richer consumer experience with its elegant Victorian architecture, fresh produce and artisanal food offerings all of which are cool and contemporary. If only it would open in the evenings…

Where do you take friends when they visit?

Last summer I enjoyed making an itinerary for a London client who came to Jersey to buy three paintings by Sir Claude Francis Barry; who lived in Jersey towards the end of his life. We retraced the artist’s footsteps visiting the locations where he painted some of his finest works. It took us to elevated views of Corbiere, St. Aubin’s Bay and Portelet. The afternoon was spent at The Oyster Box followed by an early evening swim in St. Brelade’s Bay. It proved to be a hugely enjoyable day for all concerned.

Any other restaurant recommendations?

The Green Island Bistro on a warm summer’s day as the tide edges up the beach. The food and wine is always excellent but it’s the service that I love best. The owner is funny and charming so a wonderful experience and a few good jokes are always guaranteed.

I’ve an annual tradition of booking a table at La Capannina in the week before Christmas. I absolutely adore that place. The old school Italian charm, the familiarity of the menu, the silver service and an intriguing sense of history keeps me going back for more. The slightly naff décor and 70’s suspended office ceiling only adds to the old school charm. Long live Tino!

Where do you go to let your hair down?

Preview evenings at the gallery are very well attended and at times feel more like a party. We get on average between 200-300 people through the doors and we always stay open much later than advertised. Obviously the free bar is an attraction for some but I work with so many great collectors that it’s always nice to share a glass of wine at the end of the evening and chat about the art market. The Watchmaker and Vinafera have been a very welcome addition to the local hospitality industry and with the owner’s expert knowledge of wine I can quite happily while away an hour before venturing out for dinner.

Where on the island do you feel most inspired?

At my gallery. I’m fortunate that I have such a great space and am privileged to work with such great artists, dealers, collectors and visitors but the part of my job that I enjoy most is hanging a show. I work entirely by instinct and the process of building displays is always really interesting and inspiring. The sense of satisfaction I have when it’s done is hugely rewarding and provides a buzz of energy before we open to the public.

What are you working on at the moment?

An exhibition of Pop Art, Urban Street Art and YBA’s all of which has a richly graphical aesthetic. With works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Banksy, Michael Craig Martin and Julian Opie it will be an exhibition filled with bold colours and uplifting themes perfectly timed for the start of spring. Its opens on 24th March at 5pm so don’t miss it!

Kat De La Mare

Genuine Jersey Member Kat De La Mare has always been creative; having started her creative career as a professional musician, she is now a master of micro-macrame. Twisting fine cotton strings into delicate, tiny knots, she interweaves them with wire and crystals to make beautiful intricate pieces of wearable art.

Can you tell us what inspired you to start your makers journey?

I've always been around creativity in various forms, and was a musician (mainly the cello), for many years. I spent a lot of years travelling amazing countries in Central and South America and Asia but it was during my travels across Colombia with my baby cello playing with local musicians that I was finally handed a pair of pliers and some wire by a group of artisanos who sold their art and jewellery on the streets to tourists. I would sit with them every evening learning Spanish and wire jewellery techniques. It was a massive burst of creativity and such an inspiring chapter of my life! Colombia is bursting with art, colour, music, dance and culture so it wasn't surprising that this was the roots of my creative path.

Can you tell us about your process?

I'm inspired by nature mainly...natural shapes, spirals, crystals, colours and flowers. Nature is just so perfect in all of its imperfections, which I love. I try to not always make my pieces symmetrical to really honour the natural elements. I work either starting with a crystal that I've collected that I choose how to decorate and hold it onto the body. Or, I get a design pop into my head that I sketch out and then decide on colours and crystals afterwards.

What part of what you do do you enjoy the most?

Oh, all of it! Sitting in my studio is pure therapy to be honest and I just love my creative bubble. I home educate our daughters alongside my husband (aka The Jersey Showman), so there's a lot of tag-teaming between our self-employed journeys. I don't have hours everyday when my kids are in school, so every moment is precious! All humans are creative beings, but with the pace of life nowadays it's hard to carve out the time, but I feel it's vital for all of us to do just that; whether it's knitting, colouring, drawing, painting, jewellery making, music...whatever it is, put that time aside and mark it as precious!

And the least?

Oh definitely having to make a decision about the direction of a piece and having to cut a set of macrame strings and then realising I chose wrong, haha, and having to bin the whole thing. I can always save the crystals, but macrame is a long process....you can literally waste days!

You can find me on Instagram @mariposachicka where I always pop up new pieces, or Facebook @MariposaCreativeDesigns. I also have an Etsy shop MariposaCreative where I have a selection of jewellery too. I do occasional markets here in Jersey

too (which I always advertise ahead of time on Instagram and Facebook!), and I'm always open to commissions, so if people have a piece in mind, they're always welcome to message me!

What's your favourite thing to make?

That very much depends on the way the wind blows, but I'm a sucker for a big statement macrame, metal and crystal choker or necklace. The pieces that really blow open new creative pathways for me and to be honest, the bigger the better!

Do you have anything coming up that we should keep an eye out for?

Yes! I will be at a few St Aubin markets coming up on 22nd April and 13th May inside the hall, which I'm really looking forward to.

Mortgage market update

The Year So Far

What a year so far! In January we were told that the country was heading into recession, that Bank of England Base Rate was close to peaking at 4% and that inflation had fallen and was likely to continue to fall.

Now entering the second quarter, we are told that whilst the risk of recession was receding, a decision to raise the Base Rate on 23rd March to 4.25% became virtually inevitable to help curb inflation that had unexpectedly continued to rise. There had been speculation in the weeks before that the Bank might pause any further increases in the light of the potential world banking crisis, which we are assured is now under control.

These confusing messages can do nothing other than undermine the confidence of the local market, although it is important to look positively towards the latter part of this year, when inflation is expected to fall, followed by a subsequent reduction in Base Rate.

Lending Criteria

Mortgage providers have changed the criteria that they use to decide how much they will lend to people seeking a mortgage, employing high stress tests to their applications, and this is likely to continue until Base Rate starts to fall again. Following the most recent rate rise, one leading lender, offering a five-year fixed rate of 6.14%, announced that the stress rate they were now going to use had risen to 10.39%. This means that potential purchasers need to be able to afford their mortgage at this higher rate, for their application to pass this test.

The housing market is now faced with a situation where purchasers quite simply cannot secure the necessary lending to afford to buy at current asking prices, which means that vendors, or buyers, may have to reduce their expectations if they want to secure a sale.

Asking Prices vs Selling Prices

There are no statistics in Jersey that give any indication of by how much house prices should fall, although in the UK typical house prices are currently reported as being marketed 23% higher than the average selling price, which suggest that sellers are setting their sights far too high.

Jersey Statistics produces house price figures quarterly in arrears, and these should be announced sometime in May, when a much clearer picture should emerge.

In the meantime, sellers who advertise their property at too high a price could find that their home lingers on the market for months. The unfortunate by product of this is that the longer it remains, the less interest it will attract, with potential purchasers assuming that the months of marketing is a sign that there must be something wrong with the property.

Current Interest Rates

The best interest rates that were available at the beginning of April show a downward trend in fixed rates since the start of the year, which is encouraging, as lenders take into account market visibility and future trends.
