(ALREADY OVER FIVE IN JERSEY)

Over the years we’ve learned that what many of our clients are looking for in an estate agent is, fundamentally, the same thing they’re looking for in a home: stability. At Livingroom it’s always a pleasure to assist people in buying, selling or letting the space that has given them, or will give them, that sense of contentment. We’re constantly humbled by the trust our clients place in us, and never take our responsibility lightly. In just five years we’ve already sold some of the island’s most prestigious and incredible homes, and our reputation for dealing in quality has grown every year. In 2023, with Jersey’s property market facing the challenges of increasing inflation and a re-levelling of prices after the frantic COVID and post-COVID years, we know our advice has been more important than ever. The message this year is clear: those who have put their trust in Livingroom have seen results. We’re realistic about the market we work in, our team is phenomenally experienced, and we always treat clients with kindness and compassion.

While our loyal clients value the stability and assurance we bring to the property transaction process, they also feel the benefits of our innovation and continued leadership on social media platforms. Next year we’re increasing our digital focus by setting ourselves the ambitious goal of being a paperless pan-island company by the end of 2024. This isn’t only the right thing for our islands and our planet; we also believe it will open new avenues for marketing the 400 properties we currently represent. 2023 WAS G O O D, 2 024 H AS T H E POT E NT IAL O F B E ING E XCIT ING . Light after the darkness.

We’ve just had Black Friday. No, Black Week. Black month?! I swear I’ve had more emails offering me 35–60% off at seemingly every retailer I’ve bought from or thought about buying from than any year before. Digital marketers are scraping their opt-in lists to enlicit any kind of response more intensly than ever.

nd just when you think it’s going to settle down... it’s ‘Cyber’Monday’— massive savings on pet food for the dog you used to have, anyone?! It’s all the Americans’ fault. Black Friday is their creation, celebrated the Friday after Thanksgiving. We don’t even have Thanksgiving. It’s like getting the hangover without the night out. My favourite low-grade window sticker witnessed over ‘the Blackness’ was ‘Black Friday—this weekend only’. Such is the desire to pile high and sell cheap that they have disregarded the concept of a weekend. Who needs days of the week when there are deals to be had? The trouble is, unless you want a pair of trainers in sizes three or fourteen or an XXL top that no one wanted the season before last, most of the deals are rubbish. Some retailers have to buy old stock or low-grade items just to peddle them to us on Black Friday and its retro internet-branded weekday offshoot. The noise of bargains is almost deafening, yet I still find myself scrolling through the Selfridges email to see ridiculously priced items with 40% off (and yet still ridiculously priced) just for fun. They ‘opt out’ of Black Friday but happen to send a discount email that day every year as part of their own, unique sale strategy, like restaurants that do other fests that aren’t a Tenner. My advice? Be strong. Resist. Once the chaos is over, it actually feels like it’s time for Christmas, and Christmas shopping is as it should be. You can go to your favourite retailers and pick anything in the range in a more festive and less black environment. Good things come to those who wait. Check out some of the gifts in our local Gift Guide (p. 24) for ideas or our Tech Must-Haves for 2024 (p. 138) for inspiration. Or why not head down to The Royal Square to grab a local gift from a local producer at the Genuine Jersey Christmas Market (see p. 41)? See you there! BD

JEAA DIAMOND BALL The Royal Yacht 17th November

The Jersey Estate Agents Association Ball takes place every two years and this year was a fund-raising event for ABC Jersey, the charity that offers support to islanders affected by breast cancer. It’s clear the season’s trend for partywear is sequins, with the attentees glittering appropriate for the theme of the event. The guests enjoyed arrival drinks sponsored by

Places.je as a steel band played contemporary tunes with a twist. The night featured both a raffle and auction in aid of ABC, in addition to a diamond giveaway sponsored by Catherine Best. The dancefloor went wild with glitter and sequins and there were even some shirts and tuxedos taking part too - the sign of a good event.

SEA SHANTIES AT TIM LE BREUILLY’S ‘INTERNATIONAL WATER’ EXHIBITION CCA Galleries International 16th November

INTEGRITAS WEALTH PARTNERS CHARITABLE TRUST LAUNCH The Royal Yacht 7th September

To celebrate the last days of Tim Le Breuilly’s show International Waters at CCA Galleries International, the artist has invited musicians Tom Oxenham and Jo Thorpe to perform a range of both traditional and original songs inspired by the sea, local maritime legends and

tales. It really was the perfect accompaniment to Tim’s work. Attendees could really get into the right mindset as they examined the seascapes to a nautically-relevant soundtrack. More Private Views and gallery events should come with music!

The Integritas Charitable Trust, a platform for all stakeholders of Integritas, including team members, clients, partners, and friends, to actively engage in fundraising activities and apply for grants aimed at supporting various charitable causes in Jersey. During their launch event, Integritas proudly announced the successful fundraising effort, with a total of £1,840 raised through employee payroll

donations. The company also pledged to match this amount to mark the launch of the trust, and generous donations were collected from attendees on the night. The event’s highlight was the introduction of Music in Action as the first beneficiaries of a grant from the Trust. Attendees were treated to a moving and exceptional performance by Omara Silvester, a beneficiary of Music in Action’s work.

Sleep-out raises funds for the homeless More than 140 people slept on the 12th Floor of Pier Road car park in November to raise money for local homeless charity, Sanctuary Trust. It was the biggest turnout the charity has had for its annual fundraiser, now in its fifth year, and so far it looks on track to raise at least £35,000. Tim Ringsdore, Chair of Sanctuary Trust commented: “It’s been a really tough year for so many, and particularly for the charity sector, so we are really grateful to everyone who took part and to all those who supported them. “As we don’t currently receive government funding, we rely on fundraising events, donations and grants to cover our annual operating costs, which are now in the region of £550,000. So, every pound that islanders

have donated so far is very much needed and we can’t thank all those who have contributed enough, whether sleeping out, volunteering their time or their services, or donating – without this support we simply couldn’t open our doors.” The oldest person to sleep out on Friday night was 74 years of age and the youngest just eight. A group of more than 25 young people from Pathways also took part, along with employees from at least ten different finance firms and other local companies. Volunteers ran a soup kitchen and tuckshop for people sleeping out and Vini Jones from Grace Trust played an acoustic guitar set, including a song he wrote for Sanctuary Trust.

Sarah Tumelty, Sanctuary Trust’s General Manager, said: “The atmosphere on Friday night was really special and thought-provoking for so many. We were heartened by the number of islanders who chose to swap their warm beds for the concrete car park floor to raise awareness about homelessness and to support the work we do. Current and former residents also spent the night and helped with the event. “We have a long list of ‘thank yous’ to all the people and businesses that made this year such a success; Andium Homes our main sponsor, Parking Control for use of the car park, Highlands College, Grainville School and Fungi Delecti for our Soup Kitchen, Cooper & Co for our breakfast and JMD Secure for providing overnight security, as well as all our volunteers.”

A group of close friends are celebrating after raising more than £70,000 for Jersey charity Brighter Futures at its most recent event; an exclusive lunch for 70 invited guests. Georgie Roberts, Louise Kenyon, Katriona Hollywood, Nina Mackie and Lucy Shuttleworth joined forces four years ago in aid of Brighter Futures, after being appointed as Ambassadors for the charity. Genevieve Brunwin joined the group this year. Since then, the Ambassadors have hosted an annual ‘Ladies Lunch’ at Georgie’s home, Gouray Lodge, where hundreds of guests have enjoyed an exceptional afternoon of dining, entertainment, and high-profile guest speakers. The most recent lunch, “Eat, Drink and Be Giving” to benefit Brighter Futures, was sponsored by the London art gallery Gladwell & Patterson, who have supported the event for two years and given attendees the opportunity to view and buy a range of exceptional paintings and sculptures, which are brought over specially for the lunch. The lunch also featured a conversation with Sunday-Times bestselling author, the poet Donna Ashworth, who signed copies of her latest book, Wild Hope, and an evocative performance from soprano Nicki Kennedy. Nicki performed ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, to a standing ovation, in memory of Louise Bracken-Smith, who was a dear friend of the Ambassadors. The Charity’s Patron, Dr Kyd, also spoke about post-natal depression, one of the reasons that families are referred to Brighter Futures. Over the years, the lunches have raised almost £400,000, with this year’s proceeds supporting many more families.

Gol! BCR Law LLP has announced an extension and an increase in their sponsorship for Madeira Football Club. BCR Law’s relationship with Madeira FC began at the end of the 22/23 season when BCR Law provided funding for the team’s training kits. This season the firm is proud to now be one of the club’s main sponsors. BCR Law is delighted to provide this sponsorship as part of its commitment to supporting grassroots sports on the Island and also its strong commitment to local culture and community. BCR Law CEO, Paul Coleshill, commented: “We pride ourselves on being a local firm, with a local focus. When considering how we could give back to the local community, Madeira FC was an obvious choice. We have enjoyed working with the team since the beginning, and we are thrilled to continue our sponsorship. We look forward to attending their games and cheering them on.”

Full-flow fundraising Jersey Water employees have raised a record-breaking £34,600 for their chosen charity, Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal. This exceeds any amount raised in previous years and doubles what they raised in 2022. The team at Jersey Water unanimously agreed to support Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal after a colleague’s teenage son, Callum McNulty, tragically passed away last year at the age of 18 after a four year battle with cancer. Employees embarked on various fundraising activities during the year, including a sponsored skydive in honour of Callum and collecting donations at popular Island events and festivals, such as the Boat Show, Out There, Weekender and Channel Island Pride, in exchange for water refills and reusable bottles. Pound for pound, the company matched what its workforce raised up to £15,000.

CI team Padel well in the UK With our local Padel courts taking a thrashing in the storm, it’s great to know our local players can travel and compete regardless. The inaugural UK Padel County Championships were held in late November weekend at Rocket Padel in Bristol. With twenty counties competing in Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed events it was a packed weekend of padel at the impressive 12 court indoor centre. With some of the top players in the UK representing their counties, competition was always going to be tough, but the Channel Islands Team had some impressive results over the two days. In the Ladies’ event, we were drawn in a group with Cheshire, Devon and Wiltshire. On Saturday, the ladies decisively beat Devon and Cheshire, leaving a Sunday morning must win tie against Wiltshire who had also won their other two group matches. With the scores level at one match all, it came down to a shootout tie-break (first to ten by two clear points), where each county had to select one player from each of the parings used in the tie. Chantelle De La Mare and Helen Polli paired up and played a steady and considered tie-break with some sensational defending to win and put the Ladies’ Team through to the Semi-Finals. There they met Surrey, who were formidable opponents and once again with the scores level at 1-1, it came down to a shootout to progress to the final. This time, the opposition were just too strong and Surrey prevailed to meet Yorkshire in the finals. In the Men’s event, the Channel Islands were drawn into a tough group with Cheshire, Wiltshire, Yorkshire and Suffolk with some astounding padel with rallies of over a minute across many of the matches, and including a 2 hour match for Aaron Higgins and Olly Cull against Suffolk. The final match between the Channel Islands and Yorkshire would decide the group, with the winner progressing to the semi final stage. The Channel Islands second pair of Olly Cull and Rob West raced to a 1-0 lead winning their rubber 6-1, 6-3. The “pair one” match was tighter with Bero Bobus and Aaron Higgins eventually losing 5-7, 3-6, meaning a shootout would once again decide the winner. However, Yorkshire proved too strong and won 10-4. In the Mixed Doubles, the Channel Island team easily topped their group beating Hertfordshire and Devon without dropping a set. In the semi-finals they faced Surrey who went through to the finals winning the tie 2-0. Overall, it was an exceptional weekend of padel with the Channel Islands showing they can compete on the big stages with the very best of the UK in this fast growing sport.

A ‘pastiche’ can be a musical medley or the piecing together of various songs and motifs, so this word just sprung to my mind like a golden gem as it encapsulated the description of my album so well in one word since I was blending different styles, genres and musical motifs together to create my arrangements. “I was so incredibly excited for this project very kindly supported by ArtHouse Jersey, as I love hearing any piece of music and seeing how it can be arranged in a pianistic style. I chose pieces that were close to my heart and all meant something special to me (seeing Elton John live in concert in Amsterdam inspired me so much and after watching the film where little Elton conducts his string orchestra arrangement of 'Rocket Man', I knew I just had to re-create this on the piano!). I wanted to blend two genres and showcase my style as a classical pianist with a contemporary modern edge. I experimented with different sounds, techniques and loops to create a polyphonic sound world in my covers with all of the individual instrumental parts, layers and loops heard on the tracks created by myself (with the infamous ‘Bond’ chord in ‘No Time To Die’ by Wils on guitar!). The aim of my arrangements was to give the full experience of the original pieces through a unique pianistic version. I was incredibly lucky to work with the legend that is Wilson Nash, who has been my rock through the entire process (recording, post production and mastering the tracks). I can’t thank him enough as he opened my eyes to the intricate world of sound engineering, recording and the detail of post production; it is totally mind-blowing the panoply of the whole process! I now have a huge amount of respect for all producers. Wilson believed in my project right from the start and did everything he could to make sure I was happy with it. I will miss the Saturday morning coffees and laughs we had (take 72!)

I wanted to blend two genres and showcase my style as a classical pianist with a contemporary modern edge.

What have you learned through the process?

It has certainly been a monumental journey which has taken a lot of unexpected twists and turns! I had the idea for this project with ArtHouse Jersey before covid, so it was hugely delayed due to not being able to record and then I had my beautiful son, Frederik in the mix (!) so it was quite a reiterative start. There was a silver-lining however as I ended up changing a few of the pieces on my EP and creating something new during covid which kept me sane through such a strange time. When everything opened again it was so exciting to record at Gilbert O’Sullivan studios, where the whole room has such an exciting buzz. From initial meet-ups to brainstorming and recording in such an inspirational studio, the challenges that we worked through with certain instruments, all of the weekends spent on post-production and putting it all together; it has been the most amazing experience. To work with such a talented producer who becomes a great friend in the process is pretty special.

A moment I will never forget was when I recorded the beginning of ‘No Time To Die’ on Gilbert’s infamous 1974 Fender Rhodes 73 suitcase piano, ‘pinch me’!

“There has been a huge lesson in this project for me, to stray from perfectionism which is rife in the creative industry. By the end of such an organic, raw process I was just honouring my work and proud of what I had created and how my musical ideas had developed. There is so much beauty in imperfectionism, and just delivering the energy and rawness of emotion instead of a note perfect piece. ” I didn’t really know what to expect when recording my first EP of modern covers, I have only ever recorded a classical repertoire before and this was a whole different experience. A moment I will never forget was when I recorded the beginning of ‘No Time To Die’ on Gilbert’s infamous 1974 Fender Rhodes 73 suitcase piano, ‘pinch me’! I will be forever grateful to ArtHouse Jersey for generously supporting me, to Wilson who made it all happen and last (but not least!) my husband Tom and son Frederik for always cheering me on in everything I do. I really wasn’t sure of the outcome, but what I did know was how much I’ve enjoyed it and I hope you all do too!

What’s on the horizon for next year 2024? I’m currently sowing seeds for next year and feeling very excited about what’s to come. I am in the middle of creating a new album with more covers (think Queen, Coldplay, David Guetta, Sia vibes) and have a few exciting performance opportunities in the diary with my UK agents. I am also working with incredible opera singer Georgi Mottram and we are currently recording and creating new content for our classical crossover duo ‘GiGi’ to prep for our international shows in 2024. It is such a breath of fresh air doing what we love and having such a special friendship too!

Georgina’s EP is out on her channel Georgina Sutton Pianist on Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music.

See the light. Discover Arthouse Jersey’s digital art installation, Totem by Kimatica Studio ArtHouse Jersey’s digital art installation Totem by Kimatica Studio is open until 17 December at the Maritime Museum. The piece features as part of Skipton Big Ideas: Human Connections, an exciting multi-site exhibition that uses a range of different media to examine how we connect as human beings, sponsored by Skipton International. An interplay of light, motion and emotion, using body-tracking software Totem invites visitors to move, create and influence the artwork live in the Tapestry Gallery.

K

imatica is a creative studio designing transformative experiences through performance arts, interactive technology and the human body, exploring consciousness, perception, rituals and the sublime, to inspire interconnectedness and introspection. Artists Maria Almena and Nestor Rubio (Spain) were commissioned by ArtHouse Jersey to create Totem especially for Skipton Big Ideas: Human Connections. It is an immersive ritualistic experience that invites audiences to explore human connectedness through a techno-reinvention of an ancestral spirit being, a sacred object, and a symbolic representation of tribal cohesion and harmony - The Totem. Although its beliefs and functions vary between cultures, a common purpose of this symbol is connection. The Totem was believed to strengthen the group's unity and maintain ties to ancestors, consciousness and the community. Kimatica Studio artist Maria Almena said “This neo-pagan performative experience inspired by Celtic rituals and mythology, as well as animism concepts and futuristic aesthetics, only comes to life with collective human presence. It serves as an invitation to postpandemic audiences to participate in the co-creation of generative visuals, linked and centred around a visually hypnotic light sculpture, which symbolises its heart and spirit. Visuals are generated through interactive procedural systems inspired by the forces of nature such as electricity, magnetism and fluids, intending to deepen our connection with the natural elements.” The experience is designed following a secular ritual-design framework, which aims to instil a strong sense of reconnection and belonging, in a playful and engaging way. Encouraging and rewarding group interactions, and fostering transformative and mesmerising new connections for contemporary audiences, Totem reminds us that we all share a common longing for meaningful relations, transcending language and culture. ArtHouse Jersey’s Skipton Big Ideas: Human Connections is an exciting multi-site exhibition that uses a range of different media to examine how we connect as human beings. Sponsored by Skipton International and is running until Sunday 17 December. The show is spread across three locations where visitors will encounter sculptures, film, installations, interactive technology, theatre, filmed portraits and a laboratory. There are opportunities to participate, further explore these connections and even become part of the artworks themselves.

Totem is at The Maritime Museum and the installation is open everyday between 10.30am until 4pm and is free entry with no booking required. arthousejersey.je

The Butler did it. Photography: Danny Evans

There are some local artists that transcend the term ‘local artist’. Jason Butler is definitely someone for whom that’s true. Over the past two decades, we’ve enjoyed a variety of subject matters in the engaging exhibitions of Jason’s work in Gallery, but portraiture has always been at the forefront. When you’ve got a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, it’s fair to say you’ve reached a level of attainment and respect in your craft that is globally wellregarded.

I

n his new project "Islanders," Jason will turn his artistic attentions to portraiture in a more longform project, celebrating ‘many of the diverse and intriguing individuals who contribute to island life’ by painting and drawing the faces of familiar and unfamiliar figures each week. By depicting people he comes into contact with in his daily life as an artist, the work he creates over the coming 12 months will tell the stories of each subject. The project is Jason’s way of portraying an island he has lived and worked in for most of his life. He has already started, with the results visible here and online. Weekly updates on Jason’s socials (instagram @jasonbutler1970 and new @jasonbutlerportraits for the project) will include the portraits being produced, video conversations, and time lapse reels of the work in progress. Jason will also be opening his studio every Friday, from 10am till 5pm so the public can see the portraits and talk to him about the project.

in conversation.

TIM LE BREUILLY Tim sat down with CCA Galleries International Director Gillian Duke to talk about his latest show International Waters, the insipration behind his work and his calmness towards being at adrift at sea. GD: Tim, we’re thrilled to have your show in the gallery. It’s been a huge success so far. Thank you. I’d like to talk to you about the inspiration you had behind international waters... TLB: I’m really pleased with the way the show looks. It works really well in the space, and for me, it’s just nice to get all the work together. Working on it felt a little bit like there were slightly disparate themes. But then, when I put it all up in the space at CCA, it all actually makes sense together. Inspiration-wise, I think the main pieces of the show, or a lot of the pieces in the show, are seascapes. But I think really because there’s no sort of, I mean, they’re just sea and sky. And I think that, in a way, I’m still approaching them like I would approach an abstract painting. I wouldn’t say they were minimal, but I’m still sort of concerned with the colour and the texture primarily. And then I think I’m using the seascape almost as an excuse to make a slightly abstract painting. I think there’s a lot of influence from memory from being out on the sea, the types of light that you get, and the weather and how that affects the colours that you’re seeing. So it’s kind of like my personal experience and my memories of being at sea myself.

And did you grow up in Jersey? Yes, I did, yeah. I left Jersey in 1997, did an Art Foundation, and then went to The Slade. I was in London for five years, and then I decided to go up to Scotland. I lived in Edinburgh for a while. But yes, I did grow up here. The work is a sort of slightly abstract approach to the sea, but what comes across so vividly is the depth that you achieve. You do get a real sense that the sea travels out for miles. Is that something that you think you’re very conscious of, the absolute space? Looking out to sea, you feel like you’re in the most enormous space, especially on the island of Jersey, so yes, I think so. I take your comment as a compliment, definitely. It wasn’t until I returned to Jersey about seven years ago, and even more recently since I started doing a bit of sailing and things like that, that I remembered that my Dad actually always had little fishing boats when I was growing up.

W W W.G A L L E R Y. J E

I did actually spend quite a lot of time on the water. I guess I kind of forgot about that because I moved to the city and got distracted by other things. I’d lost that feeling of almost overwhelming space. If it’s just you looking out to sea and there’s no other point of reference, you know, it is almost overwhelming. I’m really interested in the colours; sometimes they’re almost greyish, non-colours that are somehow still really vibrant. It’s those I’m trying to capture, tacking that idea with a limited amount of space on the canvas. So it’s how you try to convey that expansive space within a relatively small space.

In actuality, you do that. You do create a huge space on some very small canvases, which is something not everybody is able to achieve. Seascapes don’t often have such depth. I would imagine that growing up surrounded by that space and that view really had an impression on you. I think so. Being reintroduced to that feeling in the last couple of years has nurtured a sense of nostalgia. When my girlfriend and I got together, we went to Careteret in her little boat. It was her first time making that crossing unaided. On the way back, we actually ran out of fuel. We were only about 15 minutes away from the harbour. I didn’t really feel panic at that point; we dropped the anchor, got on the radio, and so on, but there was something really pleasurable about that experience to me, just sort of bobbing around. It was getting dark as well. I guess it’s a similar sort of exposure to the kind of mountains that I was getting in Scotland—an almost overwhelming kind of presence of nature. Space and being aware of the elements around you.

So you spent five years in London, and you studied at the Slade. Did that have an effect, being away from island life? Did that have a big impact on the work? The world of work that I was making then was very different. By the end of it, I don’t think it was very happy in London, to be honest with you. I went on to live in Edinburgh for 15 years, which I really enjoyed. I think my happiest times in Scotland were out of the city and in the hills as well. I made a kind of range of work at the Slade. I went in making very abstract work. I suppose, in some ways similar to the seascape, they had more to do with improvisation and mark-making. Throughout the course, I did very different work. I feel settled back into what I’m making at the moment. Producing work for this show really felt like I was producing a body of work, which I haven’t done for a while. It’s been a bit scattered for the last few years, and this really felt like it was like a body of work coming together.

What about revisiting paintings? Do you? Yes, now I rework and revisit paintings a lot. I like working on something that already has a history to it or on a more interesting surface as well. If it’s a canvas that I’ve used over and over, it almost feels like an archaeology sort of thing over previous paintings that have almost worked or failed. I’ll quite often leave little glimpses.

You’re a printmaker too. I often find that printmakers approach painting in a slightly different way. Do you think that way when you’re painting, and do you think your printmaking has an influence? I think they definitely influence each other. Even though I find that the act of doing them is very different, I’ve definitely produced prints more like a painter, I would say, than a printmaker. Obviously, I am printmaking, but I think that, as printmaking is very process-driven, I tend to kind of want to buck those processes. I like stretching the limitations and being just a bit more haphazard, like I would be with a painting.

I know you’re mostly doing etching, but have you explored all mediums of printmaking? Yeah, pretty much over the years. I quite like silk screens. I was interested in silk screen for a while, but I think that, for me, it sometimes feels a little bit too much like reproduction. I lean more towards etching because, for me, it can be quite painterly. It’s quite an art to use softness. And there are different techniques to produce that softness in etching. It’s obviously a different material, but you’re engaging directly with the metal plate, and that’s giving you the textures. And some of those are unpredictable as well. In that sense, there’s a parallel. It’s making the process work for you. To achieve the effects that you want, it’s not just a physical process; it’s a chemical process as well. Having some control over that chemical process means exploiting it—what it could do, how it can take over, and how you end up with something at

40

the end. I don’t like making work where I’m just executing something that’s too clearly predefined. I want something to happen in the production that is beyond my control.

And over your career, who do you think had the most influence on you at work? That’s a really tough question because I’ve always looked at lots of other artists. I think certainly in the last few years, you’ve been bombarded by so many sorts of images on Instagram that I’ve tried to seek out stuff that I might not have seen before, from artists that I hadn’t come across before. And that’s quite tricky, actually. I quite like the painter, Merlin James. He shows with the modern institute in Glasgow, I think. He’s a painter’s painter. I like seeking out unusual painters that aren’t as heavily publicised. I have a desire to kind of still have some sort of discovery looking at other artists.

And aside from the mediums that you’ve worked with, is there a medium that you haven’t used yet that you would like to use in the future? Not off the top of my head. I do daydream about making quite large sculptures sometimes. That’s something I would quite like to play around with if I had the space.

And your next body of work—what can we look forward to? I think, as I was saying before, that with this show, I was producing a body of work that’s quite consistent, but I feel like this is the start of it as well. It hasn’t ended up being what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be me pulling slightly disparate things together. It then became something completely new, almost consolidated. I feel that I can build on my body of work in a similar vein, which I’d like to produce more of. There’s explore and take further.

Ho ho ho...

it’s Market time!

As the holiday season approaches, our thoughts are starting to turn to festive decorations, the giving of gifts, and gatherings with friends and families. While opening up your phone and choosing an online retailer may seem like a convenient option, there’s something truly special about supporting local artisans and businesses and giving a gift that’s been made by a Genuine Jersey Member is a perfect way to do just that. Worry not though, you can also purchase from lots of them online too (head to genuinejersey.je.buy-online to find out more!). Hopefully there will still be time for you to head down to the Simply Christmas Markets which take place in the Royal Square from November 23rd, for three four-day weekends. They’re a fantastic way to get a real feel for the variety of different Members who make up Genuine Jersey and you’ll also be able to meet the creators and speak to them about what they do. Moreover, the items you find at Genuine Jersey Simply Christmas Markets are typically one-of-a-kind or produced in limited quantities. This means that you’re less likely to encounter the awkward situation of gifting the same item as someone else. Your gifts will be as unique as the people you’re giving them to, and the personal touch can make all the difference. On a visit to the Markets you can expect to find everything from chocolate to chopping boards and everything will have been designed, made, caught, grown or reared by our Members (you’ll be able to spot them thanks to their products carrying the distinctive red mark). Beyond the markets there are plenty of other ways that you can ensure your Christmas is less reliant on UK deliveries too, once again we’ve seen first hand just how much bad weather can impact our supply chain and one way to stop that being an issue is by buying as much local produce for your festive tables as possible. Our farmers now, more than ever, need

W W W.G A L L E R Y. J E

our support. The storms of late have really had a significant impact on their crops but they are all trying incredibly hard to ensure that they can still stock the shelves with seasonal goods. The farm shops, supermarkets and hedge veg stalls are a great place to find locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables and nothing tastes better than produce that’s only had mere miles, sometimes just metres, to travel to get to your plate, it’s also great for the environment too. Be sure to look at the origin labels when you’re shopping so that you know you’re buying local, or go directly to the farmers and buy from their stalls around the island. We’ve updated our website this year to list who will be trading on which weekends at Simply Christmas and we will keep you updated on our social media channels too. Don’t forget that not everyone will do all three weekends so snap up those purchases when you see them so you don’t miss out!

The Art of Enterprise

Following his ‘40 over 40’ Exhibition last year, Oliver Doran has been busy shooting local entrepreneurs for a new exhibtion launching this month. ‘The Art of Enterprise’ swaps glamourous ladies for titans of industry (and glamourous ladies) with a focus on the realm of personal visual branding.

The exhibition aims to inspire visitors to think about their own stories and how these narratives shape their personal and professional lives. "Your personal brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room,” Doran adds. “It’s about your story, values, and how you present yourself to the world.”

t’s not just about that flashy LinkedIn profile picture, but an experience that see Oliver trying to eek out the story of the individual with the shots he takes, “The project features fifty entrepreneurs, each with a story that goes beyond business success to the core of their individual identities. These narratives are captured in powerful portraits, showcasing the essence of each person's personal brand”.

As visitors walk through the exhibition, they are invited to reflect on their own personal brand. “What's your story? How does it influence your life and work? The Art of Enterprise is not just a showcase of portraits; it's an invitation to explore the power of your narrative”.

Dr Huss always conducts comprehensive one-to-one consultations to ensure the most suitable treatment plans.

Ageing authentically over 14 years Dr Gertrude Huss, is the Channel Islands’ first and only medical professional to achieve a Master of Surgery degree in Minimally-Invasive Aesthetics. She has more than 20 years experience in the field of medical aesthetics, and is the founder of the awardwinning Hill Street Clinic.

I

t’s Dr Huss’s meticulous approach to combating the signs of ageing that has made her a leader in her field. In 2013, she was awarded the European AntiAgeing Trophy at the Anti-Ageing Medicine European Congress for her balanced approach to facial rejuvenation. Her training, experience, anatomical knowledge and discerning choice of only the best aesthetic products on the market have made her the most sought-after aesthetic clinician on the islands.

LOOKING BETTER WITH AGE

These days, looking ‘overworked’ is feared just as much as that of ageing prematurely. But Dr Huss insists it’s not simply about looking younger - but about ageing better. She firmly believes in creating ultra-natural results for her patients, focusing on restoration, rejuvenation and regeneration over time. Her method is to work with the

70

ageing process, not battle against it. And the results speak for themselves.

One such patient of hers is Karen, whom Dr Huss began treating 14 years ago when she was 51. At 65, Karen now looks naturally more youthful, with brighter, bettertoned skin, fewer wrinkles and less hooded eyes. But the results are still subtle enough for her friends to ask the question, ‘Have you..?’. As one of her longest-visiting patients, Karen has become the poster child for Dr Huss’ vision of authentically ageing with grace, and would never even consider going anywhere else. “I have to admit that I was concerned I wouldn’t end up looking myself,” she confided. “But at 51, I already looked older than my years. I desperately needed to do something about it - my confidence was so low. Gertrude took 10 years off me - but my face hadn’t changed. It simply looked like she’d turned back the clock. I was thrilled!” Since then, Karen feels as though time has considerably slowed when it comes to the visual signs of ageing, “It’s LIFE & ST YLE IN JERSEY

definitely happening, but I feel like I’m getting older elegantly and on a much slower timescale,” she said. “Nothing looks fake - just wonderfully fresh - and I still look younger than I did when I was 50. I love everything Dr Huss has achieved, and my confidence is at an all- time high.”

TAKING A HOLISTIC APPROACH Facial rejuvenation shouldn’t be about a “quick fix” says Huss. “It really should be about the long- term view - you may feel it’s all very well getting high-street fillers or botox here and there in the short-term, but the long-term impact of doing so can have negative results.” In fact, overuse of fillers can increase wrinkles in the long-term, by over-stretching the skin in those areas. And over time, botox can have a reduced effect, requiring more frequent and higher use of the toxin. That’s why it’s so crucially important to see a reputed, qualified professional. With less-qualified practitioners, you may also be facing the risk of a botched job. Dr Huss’s holistic approach to her patient, Karen involved a combination of treatments designed to address the full face and neck, bringing youth to the entire area, thereby resulting in a much more natural look. Her progressive treatment plan began with a full anatomical and facial appraisal, analysing the skeletal structures, soft tissue and areas of ageing. She was then given Ultratherapy® - micro-focused ultrasound that non-invasively heats the skin at various depths. This triggers a natural regenerative response that stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin resulting in a gradual lift of the brow, jawline and cheeks, and helps to restore a natural glow.

Gradually, over the following years, Dr Huss has treated Karen with a combination of hyaluronic fillers, skinboosters (Profhilo and Restylane® Vital) and botox to improve skin tone, plump the skin cells from the inside, and treat fine lines and wrinkles. Karen’s eyelids were also treated with Plasmage®, a blepharoplasma procedure that reduces excess upper eyelid skin.

THE COMPLETE RANGE Dr Huss’ Hill Street Clinic offers a wide range of treatments, including facial rejuvenation and beautification with anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, skin tightening and lifting using Ultherapy®, body contouring and fat reduction with CoolSculpting® and lipotherapy, regenerative aesthetics with polynucleotides and exosomes and Sculptra®, as well as overall skin health using skin boosters such as Profhilo® and chemical peels. The clinic also offers Hydrafacial®, and microneedling with SkinPen®, medical-grade skincare with ZO® by Zein Obagi, Revitalash® eyelash serum, and have recently introduced the award-winning procedure, Alastin Skincare® designed to supplement the skin pre and post procedure. It’s important to note that Dr Huss also treats men and, as always, with the same, careful and considered approach to graceful, subtle ageing.

If you think that you could benefit from Dr Huss’ expertise, she offers consultations for a small fee, which is then deducted from the final cost of your treatment.

Treat yourself

This month’s beauty product line up is specifically talking to you girls in your 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. So if you’re all smug and young you can skip this bit : ) As we head into 2024 with gay abandon it’s time to take stock and consider our skin care routines. We’re all ageing, therefore we all need to be taking big steps to keep our lovely skin looking youthful for as long as we can. You can age gracefully with a few elegant greys… but un-loved skin isn’t the way to make a statement. We’ve put together three key products that will leave you looking 5 years younger in an instant.

EYE LINES

Medik8 r-Retinoate Day & Night Eye Serum, £75.99, Sephora. Under eye wrinkles occur when the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and loses elasticity which can be accelerated by frequent sun exposure and repeated facial movements. So unfortunately, the lovelier you are, always chatting away animatedly, the worse it can be. This cashmere-soft serum contains a slowrelease, non-irritating r-Retinoate, a true breakthrough in vitamin A technology that is designed to outperform retinol (which you might have read a lot about 20 years ago) in every way. It also contains caffeine to boost circulation and energise the eyes. You get visible youthrenewing results, as it resurfaces dull skin and fine lines for brighter eyes.

THINNING LIPS

AGING FRIZZY HAIR

Sisley’s Brand New Invisible Hold Hair Spray, £68.00, Voisins. This next generation hairspray gives a natural, invisible hold. With a satisfying fine, even, non-sticky

spray. It can be used on the roots to create instant volume if hair thinning is an issue for you, or if you just like a bit of fabulous bounce. However what we love it for is keeping the frizz in check, which is a huge age give-away. Your sebum production declines with age, resulting in hair that is not as shiny, soft or smooth. So, once you’ve conditioned and added hair serums and styled your locks, this wonderful product will keep your hair looking perfect and sleek well into day four, that is, if you’re a fan of not washing your hair too often to let those natural oils get to work.

72

Sisley Phyto-Rouge Shine Lipstick in colour sheer Beverly Hills, £37,75, Voisins. Your decreased production of new collagen and elastin molecules will make your lips appear thinner as the years go on. They lose the vital subdermal structure needed to remain full and plump. Now, this is one that might have to be addressed with a filler specialist. However a good course of action to take today is to use a product such as this fab lipstick which has a luxurious melt-in feel that leaves lips moisturised, it’s a ‘perfect’ natural shade you can wear all day, everyday, without looking ‘overdone’. With the Hydrobooster complex, composed of Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac Glucomannan microspheres, lips are immediately plumped and smoother. With repeated application, lips are nourished and lines are soften. This particular shade “Beverly Hills” is the standout lipstick colour which became an overnight beauty sensation in the United States, breaking the all-time record for the number of lipsticks sold at American department store Neiman Marcus, and it’s just been released in Europe. This product is the perfect compromise between the satiny coverage of a classic lipstick and the sheerness of a gloss, but we love it for its lip-care functions. This one would make a brilliant present for a wonderful woman in your life.

Myth-busting on acupunture Contrary to common misconceptions, acupuncture is not painful. The needles used are as fine as a human hair, and many patients do not feel them during treatment. Some even find the experience so relaxing that they fall asleep. Private health providers often cover acupuncture treatments, making it accessible to a broader range of individuals. The British Acupuncture Council are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. BAcC Members conduct around 2.3 million acupuncture treatments annually, highlighting its popularity and acceptance. Acupuncture is utilised for various concerns, including chronic pain, headaches, low back/neck pain, TMJ issues, pregnancy support, and sports injuries.

Leap Into 2024 With A New Pair Of Legs! Santa and his reindeer travel once around the world every year but did you know that most of us walk the equivalent of three times that distance in a lifetime? So it’s no surprise that Mr Sudip Ray, a vascular specialist in Jersey, sees many patients with swollen and heavy legs due to varicose veins and below he gifts them some useful advice to get through the festive period and bouncing into the Leap Year.

Recently relocated to Jersey, Shannan tells us her story.

“Our modern lifestyle of standing or sitting for long periods leads to blood pooling in the legs and can cause damage to the valves which keep veins healthy and fast flowing. This is worse during the winter when we spend more time indoors and WFH. Remember we were originally designed to crawl, squat or jump! Regular exercise or walking reduces high vein pressure by 80% and burns off any extra weight gained during the winter, and many health clubs offer a discount at this time. If you’re after a natural boost then extract of horsechestnut seed from a wellbeing store sometimes relieves vein discomfort or swelling.”

Looking up at the African night sky as a child, I was in awe at the celestial objects burning brightest against the velvet darkness. Millions upon billions of stars punctuated the inky black abyss.

In his Lido clinic Mr Ray can quickly determine the underlying cause of varicose disease with the help of simple diagnostic ultrasound, and he also offers treatments on a walk-in, walkout basis.

This same intelligence is what chiropractic helps to facilitate, which allows our bodies to heal themselves. My chiropractic journey has taken me from working in the U.K where I graduated eight years ago, to working in Peru and learning to speak Spanish.

“Some patients are concerned they may have a circulatory problem but I can often reassure them that it is not serious and will either settle or respond to simple lifestyle adjustments which join their New Year’s Resolution list! For those continually affected by painful, itchy or unsightly veins I recommend one of the keyhole procedures which can be performed with no or minimal anaesthetic and a quick recovery time. Spider or thread veins usually respond to a session of microinjections whilst larger veins are better treated using microwave ultrasound or a medical superglue…and treatment early in the year means great legs for the Spring and Summer holiday.”

Mr Sudip Ray is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Harvey Suite, Lido Medical Centre. His PA Carly can be contacted on 07797 817964 or visit www.endovein.co.uk

Human Health welcomes Shannan Dobb.

Now as a chiropractor, I look back on my upbringing in Zimbabwe with fondness, remembering all those brilliant night skies. Knowing that our bodies are made up of star dust and that those essential elements form each and everyone of us. These very elements make up our body’s innate intelligence.

Now here I am in beautiful Jersey, where my plan is to help islanders realise optimal health, on their journey that is called life. What drew me to become a chiropractor was a motorbike accident that I had. The resulting back pain was helped immensely by chiropractic care and I knew straight away that I wanted to be able to provide the same care for others. Over the years my passion has only grown stronger and I embrace every healing moment that I share with clients. I specialise in helping people who want more quality of life and want to make their star burn brighter.

HOM E & I N T E R I O R S

A modern marvel I have to be honest, when I hear the term ‘farm’ in the name of a house, I’d usually imagine it’s not for me. Old buildings, low ceilings, granite internal walls and AGAs simply aren’t my jam. Then something like Noirmont farm pops up on Places.

I

understand that the traditional Jersey farmhouse, built on such principles, has been serving Jersey families for generations, and I don’t mean to offend. I have, on occasion, seen the odd development that permits an element of design or modernity that elevates the old and prohibitive architecture of the past. Noirmont Farm has been built without such confines and requires bolt-on strategies. This brand-new, ultra-modern, five-bedroom detached house is something else. Sharp lines, floor-to-ceiling glass, and vaulted roofs are more like a Skandi design study, where somewhere you’d have to duck to get into a scullery.

Designed with sustainability in mind and impeccably constructed using natural materials throughout, this property seamlessly combines contemporary luxury with eco-friendly living.

The colour palette and materials are also progressive and achingly cool. Natural woods in modern tones—dark and moody wood—that’s more Soho House than The Victoria Club. It all just ties together beautifully and somehow even manages to make a granite hearth look progressive. The muted pastel tones almost feel like you’re in a Wes Anderson film. This is definitely a family home. There are five bedroom suites to accommodate your style-conscious little ones of varying ages. All ground-floor bedrooms have doors outside with their own unique outlook and terracing; all are slightly different in design. The principal suite sits on the first floor and has excellent country and sea views. The bathrooms look like something straight out of someone’s Houzz portfolio, but not so crazy that they’ll need to be replaced in two years.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

– the dual pressures on the Next Gen On 20 September 2023, Stonehage Fleming held the first of a three-part webinar series on Family Governance & Succession titled “The Fleming Family, a seventh-generation case study”. The webinar’s guest speaker was Matthew Fleming, Partner and Head of Family Succession & Governance and it was moderated by Priyanka Hindocha, Director and Client Relationship Manager in Stonehage Fleming’s Family Office department. As a Seventh Generation Fleming Family member, Matthew led a series of discussions and shared lessons he and his family have learned about leadership, values, and the importance of finding a new shared purpose for the family. The session covered the challenges and successes faced by Matthew’s family over seven generations and many of the other families for which Stonehage Fleming is privileged to support, offering a balance of theoretical and practical insights.

I “

t’s both a privilege and a challenge to be born into a family with a great legacy. As the great grandson of Robert Fleming, the man who built the Fleming family business some 150 years ago, I believe it is a challenge that can’t be met without two things: putting the right governance in place and engaging advisers who are able to provide you with guidance that goes beyond the technical.

There appears to be a misunderstanding in the marketplace that governance can be understood simply as a series of events, underpinned by structure, or tax advice. Actually, governance has to have the family – with all its living, breathing dynamics – at its core. For this reason, it is crucial to find advisers equipped with the holistic expertise that families require.

The great Barbara Broccoli, daughter of Cubby who first started making the James Bond films, once asked me how it felt to be “standing on the shoulders of giants”. It was a great question and one I had never asked myself before. The answer, of course, was that being born into a family like my own can be at once daunting and incredibly empowering.

These are the sorts of areas where holistic advice extending beyond governance alone starts to come into its own. The risk is that too many advisers fall back on their technical capabilities alone. Of course, those are very important but technical capabilities are available all around the world. What is harder to find is advisers with empathy, who display moral courage and principle and who have that rare ability to challenge the really important – and often sensitive – issues head on.

It is a paradox that faces many of the Next Gen members of the families with whom my team and I work. Time and again, experience tells us that the key to managing the situation well is engaging advisers who have the technical expertise to put the right governance in place while also having the ability to employ their softer skills in understanding the human side of family office work. The experience of my own family is that a trust company provides the governance. My father was chair of the trust company that held the family business. As a structure, it has taken us through many major events: the when, why and how of selling our family business; what to do next; dealing with liquidity; working with brilliant – and not-so-brilliant – advisers and the challenge of how to coordinate all that as a family group. Although perhaps not the most exciting prospect for families to consider, working with clients in similar situations I am able to say from first-hand experience that governance has been an incredibly positive thing for my family. For me, ‘growing up’ in a culture of governance via the trust company has made a real difference to my sense of purpose and plan. As a structure, I have watched the trust company deal with an extraordinary range of events during my lifetime during which I have come to learn that the only thing we all know to expect is the unexpected.

TAKING ACTION

How women can find financial confidence through smart investment decisions

L

ife can be full of surprises, but gaining financial confidence will help investors better assess and evaluate how they can reach their financial goals. Taking control of your finances is of particular importance to women, due to longevity, potential pay differences between genders, career breaks, risk tolerance and other factors.

INVESTIBLE ASSETS IN MILLIONS

Financial confidence is having knowledge and power over your finances and it’s something that everyone should have. However, there is a clear gender gap that continues to be a substantial challenge to equality, sustainable development, and the global economy. MORTGAGE

RETIREMENT JOE

UBS has illustrated this financial disadvantage through fictional characters ‘Jane’ and ‘Joe’ in their report ‘Taking Action – How women can best protect and grow their wealth.’ At 25, Jane and her brother Joe inherit £1 million. However, their financial journeys are substantially different: THE INCOME GAP Let’s assume that Joe’s salary is 10% higher than Jane’s as Jane works in an industry that pays less based on average gaps across developed economies. This implies that Jane will earn around £800,000 less than Joe over her working life. Jane will therefore have 38% less wealth by age 85 than Joe. BREAKS IN CAREER Let’s also assume that Jane had a break in her earnings because she takes a year off unpaid, at aged 40. She has forfeited a year’s salary, with no net savings from this period to invest over time. Additionally, her career progression is also affected and slightly stalled, meaning that Jane’s wealth at age 85 is 43% less compared to Joe. FLEXIBLE WORKING In addition, we assume that Jane has a flexible work arrangement whereby she works parttime, which stalls her career further. This results in a 96% decrease in the value of her wealth. LONGER LIFE EXPECTANCY Jane’s lower net income harms her wealth to the point of not being able to achieve her goal of passing wealth to the next generation. Even more importantly, as women tend to live longer than men, Jane will also struggle to maintain her lifestyle. INVESTMENT APPROACH Women sometimes tend to have a lower risk tolerance when it comes to investing, but this can also come down to how they are advised. When creating an investment portfolio, Jane needs to consider how likely it is that her risk tolerance and investment choices will achieve her long-term goals. Investing is about progress, not perfection – Jane is on a long and important journey and needs to reflect on and learn from her decisions before correcting her course.

100

JANE

AGE PAY GAP

CAREER BREAK

FLEXIBLE EMPLOYMENT

LIFE EXPECTANCY

RISK TOLERANCE

“UBS research shows that women are calculated risk-takers; they trade less and are less likely to sell at market lows. As a result, they often outperform men when it comes to investment returns,” said Rusne Gecaite-Fielding, Client Account Manager at UBS Global Wealth Management. “However, many are highly involved in short-term financial decisions, but tend to delegate long-term financial decisions to their partners. At UBS, we aim to empower women to have financial confidence through considered, personalized advice, that meets them where they are. Financial knowledge is a foundation that helps women to make important life decisions, and understanding how their wealth can work for them despite a bump in the road is key to ensuring they meet their long-term goals.” It’s publicly referenced by many that Albert Einstein once said, “compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world,” which is why it pays to start investing early. While the story above is hypothetical, Jane is clearly at a disadvantage and would need to stay disciplined with her portfolio to achieve her long-term goals. This can be done through increasing financial confidence and working with a wealth manager that understands her needs and financial objectives. Moments that mattered Long time technology enthusiast Adam Currie talks to us about how moving from technology into operations was a natural progression in his exploration of what makes things tick, and why he believes robots will never rule the world. I never clearly envisaged where I wanted my career to go, but knew I wanted to keep learning and growing as an individual and when that wasn’t happening, I looked to change course. There are many similarities between Operations and IT in that both require me not just to fix things but to consider ‘is there a better way of doing this?’ Having a network like the Institute of Directors has been very beneficial, I can regularly meet those that do similar roles and chat to people to bounce ideas off. I’ve discovered that understanding people and the correct way to approach them is half of the battle, as asking the right questions gets you a long way. There is a danger that an IT role can feel lonely or distanced from others in an organisation and become reactive and a resource rather than a forward-thinking function. To be successful in this field you need to be part of the future conversation, exploring solutions to problems as they occur or even before. The IT skillset required today has changed so much from when I started. There’s much less hands-on work and more navigating your way around the cloud. It felt like a natural path for me to move onto operations to allow the future of IT to take the lead. Like technology, we all must learn to evolve.

I’ve always been fascinated by how things work, which is quite possibly the result of having a father who was an electronics repair man. There was always a project going on at home to be involved with, installing satellite television, or pulling apart a different item on the weekend, and so grew an interest in how things tick, or how I could make them better. This was a passion which stayed with me throughout my career in Information Technology (IT) and now in company operations.

K

nowing that I wanted to work in IT I went straight into employment at age 16, the routes to higher education for the sector not being what they are today. Having that opportunity to work in what I considered a ‘grown-up’ working environment at such a young age was invaluable to me. I was able to travel almost immediately, access mentors and meet people in various locations to have exposure to different ways of working. Technology had just started to pick up pace in its advancement so there were plenty of projects to pique my interest. I quickly learnt that great bosses stick with you and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a few along the way. As well as developing my progression, it demonstrated the importance of good people management, having someone who was both friend and mentor and who could pull you up on mistakes as well as reward you. I have tried to emulate this in the way I manage people now, installing mutual trust and respect and ensuring as best I can, that I stay in my lane. After a lengthy time in IT working as both a contractor and a full-time employee, I wanted to broaden my outlook and became interested in the wider inner workings of businesses. I had been Head of IT at Bedell Cristin for some years when I was offered the chance to move into the role of Chief Operating Officer. This allowed me to have touch points with marketing, brand and visuals, finance as well as technology. Rather than evaluating technology, systems and platforms, I am now exploring what is at the heart of a business and what the mechanics of success look like.

102

Speed of change is a key theme for most businesses at the moment, no one wants to be the first to take the plunge and test a new development, but you need to get the timing right to adopt change before you are left behind. With new advancements and tools at our disposal we need to be able to guide people to use technology in a safe and responsible way. I’m not worried that AI or automation will ever replace the function of IT, it’s far more likely it will complement it. We’ve lived through the introduction of social media and smartphones, and each has brought with it challenges and benefits.

After a lengthy time in IT working as both a contractor and a full-time employee, I wanted to broaden my outlook and became interested in the wider inner workings of businesses. I had been Head of IT at Bedell Cristin for some years when I was offered the chance to move into the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Outside of work I’m part of the community that hosts Jersey’s ‘repair cafes’, helping to breathe life into a host of items otherwise destined for the dump. As well an indulging my love of tinkering, it’s been a fantastic opportunity to connect with owners and to learn the history and sentimental value attached to items brought along. For someone like me at the forefront of change, I have enjoyed fixing wirelesses and old record players which remind us that there is a place in life for the old as much as the new.

Claudia Mendes Fund Administrator, Crestbridge

What made you choose to work for Crestbridge?

I hadn’t heard much about Crestbridge before I worked here, and I’m not sure why - it’s a great place to work! I see Crestbridge more as a family than a workplace. I very much enjoy getting up in the morning and seeing my colleagues, learning new and interesting things and being able to take things at my own pace. Crestbridge is also a very flexible workplace where you are able to feel comfortable in your own skin. I started out in the Payments Team but then moved over to the Private Equity team. I didn’t have any background in private equity, so I was really grateful for the opportunity and for the belief the company had in me. I can honestly say that I’ve found somewhere to work where I really want to develop and grow for the longer-term.

What do you do on an average day?

I like to start my day with a nice strong coffee that I grab with my colleagues at the relaxed area we have in our Jersey office called ‘The Bridge’. Then I like to plan out what tasks I have on that are urgent and that need to get out and done that day. I also like to have a quick catch up with my manager who is super supportive and helps with some of the trickier tasks. When I have a quiet moment, I like to try and do some reading on different industry topics as this enables me to further understand my role.

Age: 24 University attended: I chose to go straight into a career after leaving education. Course: I am studying towards exams with the Chartered Governance Institute What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? Forensic scientist – I’ve always enjoyed watching crime documentaries. Favourite way to relax: I like to listen to music; my favourite artist is Billie Eilish. I also like to game in my spare time. Favourite place to eat in Jersey: I definitely fancy a bit of TGI Fridays. Those Jack Daniels chicken strips are so dangerously good! Favourite possession: My two beautiful cats are my favourite thing in the world!

What is your next step?

To reach my absolute potential! I’d like to continue with my studies and prove to myself that it’s all possible. It’s quite a challenge coming straight from college and not having a clear idea of what you want to pursue as a career, but I believe anyone can to get to where you want to be if you really put your mind to it. I started studying for my Chartered Governance Institute exams this year and so far, I can say that it has definitely helped me in many areas of my day-to-day work.

What advice would you give others considering the experience you have now?

Follow your own thoughts and dreams. I’ve always tried to follow others to please them, realising we don’t have a lot of time on this earth to do that. Ask lots of questions, read all about different areas in the industry, and I would also recommend just working hard and giving it your best shot. My confidence has grown immensely over the years, and I think that comes with time and age. I am grateful for all the opportunities I have had given to me and I am excited to see what the future holds.

ABOUT CRESTBRIDGE Crestbridge is a global provider of private equity and real estate services. Jamie Watling Assurance Associate, EY

What professional training have you done?

I am currently working at EY on my placement year for my degree in Accounting and Financial Management. With EY’s support, I have the opportunity to complete several ACCA exams with BPP during my placement year, as I work towards becoming a qualified accountant.

What made you choose to work for EY?

Prior to joining EY during my placement year, I completed several work experience placements in the industry before joining EY’s CI Summer Internship programme and deciding that this was the place for me. Becoming an EY Intern gave me a taste of what life in assurance is like at EY and in a professional services environment. Completing the internship programme also made me more comfortable with the dayto-day life of an EY Associate, so I knew what to expect when starting my new role. As one of the ‘Big 4’, EY has a vast global network with limitless opportunities, which I will take full advantage of in the future.

Age: 20 University Attended: Loughborough University Course: Accounting and Financial Management What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? A professional footballer Favourite ways to relax: Golf and Poker Favourite place to eat in Jersey: Caffe Ristorante Italia on Colomberie Favourite possession: Signed Wigan Athletic shirt

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate, considering the experience you have now?

Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Working in a professional services environment means you will get out what you put in. Talking to diverse groups and attending social events are just a few examples of building a solid network in your work environment. It will make day-to-day life much more enjoyable, and you never know which other opportunities will come to you and where they will take you.

What do you do on an average day?

There is rarely an ‘average’ day as an EY Assurance Associate. My projects vary, from auditing a broad speculum of local and international clients to having strategic meetings with the managers and partners. The variety of experiences offered by a career with EY makes every day enjoyable and an investment in myself.

What is your next step?

In the next four years, I will have obtained my undergraduate degree and become a qualified accountant. In the long term, I intend to capitalise on EY’s global network by exploring the different cultures worldwide. Being Jersey-born and bred myself, I believe it is so important to experience more of the world while the opportunity is available.

ABOUT EY

At EY, we help organisations make better business, finance and technology decisions. In a fast-changing world, it’s an exciting place to be. If you have an appetite for innovation, creating growth and making a lasting impact, then EY is the place to begin your career. Whichever team you choose, you’ll feel at home from the start, and we’ll ensure you receive the first-class training, support and guidance you need to carry out impactful work with exciting clients, working with colleagues worldwide. Lucy Allen

Recovery & Reorganisation Senior, Grant Thornton What made you choose to work for Grant Thornton?

During University I had the option to study abroad at Clarkson University in New York for six months. During my time there, I took an accountancy module, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Upon completion, I searched for six month placement opportunities in Jersey to complete my year out and found a role at Grant Thornton in the Recovery & Reorganisation (“R&R”) department. Grant Thornton appealed to me because of its size, culture and reputable brand. I loved the fact that I was able to converse with a Director during my onboarding and felt valued from day one. Following a very successful and happy placement here, I was lucky to be offered a full time position as the newest Associate. I am delighted to have since been promoted twice to my current role as a Senior.

What professional training have you done?

Grant Thornton gave me the option to choose from the ACCA or ICAEW qualifications. Unlike some professional service firms which dictate what qualification you will study for, the choice was my own. Working closely with the People & Culture team, I made the decision to undertake the ACCA qualification and I’m due to sit my final exam this December, with the hope of becoming a qualified accountant in January 2024.

What is your next step?

I would like to explore the option of becoming a Certified Fraud Examiner. Given the nature of the work we offer, I believe this would be particularly helpful in growing my expertise.

Age: 25 University: Northumbria University Course: Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business with Tourism Management What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? An actress, I was a little drama queen as a toddler (some would say I still am!) Favourite way to relax? A walk on the beach with my six month old puppy, Olive (albeit, weather dependent). Favourite place to eat in Jersey? Has to be El Tico. My mum and I go there at least once a week for their delicious jungle curry. Olive loves seeing all of her furry friends there too

Audit Associate, Grant Thornton What made you choose to work for Grant Thorton?

After graduation I wanted to work for a global brand that has a good reputation locally. Grant Thornton offers a wide portfolio of clients to work on, which isn’t readily available at some other firms, and opportunities to work within other service lines, which has helped both my professional development and my ongoing studies.

What professional training have you done?

I am currently studying for my ICAEW ACA qualification.

What do you do on an average day?

I have recently made a temporary switch to the Business Advisory team, where I am helping to produce financial statements but in Audit my day would consist of helping to carry out planning, and doing fieldwork and completion procedures. Although most of the time I work from our office, other times I work from client sites and in doing so I’ve had the chance to meet a variety of clients and build my professional network.

What is your next step?

I would like to finish my professional exams, along with gaining further experience and knowledge within the industry.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. This has allowed me to learn from the people around me, which made stepping into the work environment for the first time much easier.

Age: 24 University: De Montfort Course: Business Management What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? Rugby player Favourite way to relax? Watching TV and movies Favourite place to eat in Jersey? Casa Mia

Why did you join the Intertrust Graduate Programme?

Paddy Forsyth Joining Intertrust was a natural choice for me due to its great reputation and strong emphasis on employee growth, tenacity, and diverse opportunities to develop both personally and as part of a great team. Intertrust’s commitment to innovation as well as the recent acquisition by CSC made this move a no-brainer, as I wanted to be part of a growing and diverse company and I couldn’t be happier with how the first couple months have unfolded.

Giles Ockenden As someone with an international background, I wanted to work for a company with a global reach and client base. I knew that joining Intertrust would offer me the opportunity to work for multinational clients on cross-jurisdictional matters, which I thought I’d enjoy doing. It was also important to me that I could develop my skills in a supportive environment which enabled my professional growth. Intertrust offers both in spades.

Finn Knight I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the business and getting insights into what the team does on a day-to-day basis, including communicating with clients and undertaking tasks relating to their accounts. However, if I had to pick one thing, it would be during the trip to Amsterdam where we baked cakes for the homeless shelter as part of CSC Gives Back. It was really rewarding to be able to make a gesture to the local community, as well as the teambuilding that was involved.

Isaac Du Val Our recent four-day trip to visit the Netherlands Branch of Intertrust at their EDGE office in Amsterdam was a personal highlight for me during the first six weeks of the programme. The combination of workrelated training activities, such as time-management seminars, connecting with fellow graduates from Intertrust’s Luxembourg and Dutch offices, who are also in the programme, and exploring the City of Amsterdam itself ensured that the trip was a well-rounded and fantastic experience.

Fund Administrator, IQ EQ ( Jersey) Limited What made you choose to work for IQ-EQ?

After finishing my A-levels I went straight into the industry. Having no experience in finance, my friend recommended IQ-EQ because of the Trainee Discovery Programme that they offer. It sounded like it would be very beneficial to me as it gives you a range of experience in the finance industry. The programme gave me the opportunity to move around different departments within the company, gaining experience and knowledge in different specialties. I started the programme in September 2021 and worked within the Funds, Corporate and Private Wealth departments. After recently completing the programme, I accepted a permanent position in the Funds team and was promoted to Officer in July of this year.

What professional training have you done?

I have just started studying for my ACCA qualification.

What do you do on an average day?

Each day brings different challenges. There is always something going on, which is one of the main reasons why I like this role. In my Funds team, we administer large Japanese structures. The main aspects of my role include dealing with our clients’ needs effectively and efficiently whilst ensuring we meet all regulatory deadlines.

What is your next step?

To carry on with my ACCA exams and become fully qualified. I want to keep developing my knowledge and skills to progress within the company. IQ-EQ has clear steps on how to progress, so I am excited to see how my career can develop!

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

To be open-minded, and if you’re taking part in a trainee course like IQ-EQ’s, don’t make a decision early in the process as to what department is your favourite. It takes time to fully understand the nature of each department and what is right for you!

Ashling Magner

Tax Consultant, KPMG in the Crown Dependencies Age: 25 University attended: University of Limerick (Ireland) Course: Undergraduate: Bachelor of Business Studies; Postgrad: Masters of Taxation What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? Beyoncé Favourite way to relax: Sea swim and breakfast out Favourite place to eat in Jersey: The Good Egg Favourite possession: Winning playing shirt from 2023 Siam (Sorry Guernsey)

What made you choose to work for KPMG?

The firm has a great reputation – being one of the Big 4 – and provides amazing opportunities worldwide. Having a keen interest in travel, KPMG stood out as a firm where I could explore a new country while progressing my studies and career in tax. KPMG has a very educated and experienced workforce. In my research of the firm, I learned that the tax partner, Paul Eastwood, was involved in writing the Economic Substance Law. This further attracted me to join their tax team. Sport is a massive part of my life but can be difficult to find the time for it when working in such a fastpaced industry. However, KPMG stands out for their flexibility around sport, and the firm continues to support me in providing sponsorship as a player of the Jersey Ladies Rugby Club.

What professional training have you done?

I am currently in the final stages of completing my ACCA qualification to become a chartered accountant, which involves 13 accounting exams and an ethics module. KPMG work with premium training provider, BPP, to provide tuition and revision courses. The tutors on the course really know their stuff and are readily available to offer additional support where needed.

What do you do on an average day?

No day is ever the same at KPMG. The firm’s tax department is not segregated, unlike elsewhere. This means I can often work in several different areas such as corporate, personal, and international tax. We are currently in busy season for corporate tax, so my days are filled with company tax returns. It continuously provides new challenges, and I am learning a lot with each passing day.

What is your next step?

Once I complete my professional exams, I look forward to getting involved in the more intricate elements of tax within KPMG while continuing to learn from my peers and management team. I’ll also hopefully start teaching the more junior trainees the knowledge I’ve gained so far. KPMG has also introduced the ‘Tax Trek’, which enables us to do a 3-6 month secondment to another KPMG office. So who knows – I might find myself in KPMG Japan to continue my adventure!

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

No question is ever a bad question. The more you ask the more you learn, and it means you are getting the answer for somebody else too. While it has been hugely rewarding, the industry is fast paced and managing the workload with studies can be challenging. But support is always available, so don’t hesitate to look for it. Take on as many new experiences within the industry as possible to understand what doesn’t interest you as much as what does. ABOUT KPMG

If you think your future lies in financial services, our 2024 trainee programme is one of the best choices you could make to start your career in audit, tax, or advisory. Intern Assistant Administrator in the Jersey Real Estate Fund Services team, Ocorian What made you choose to work for Ocorian?

When the opportunity arose to work at Ocorian during my gap year, I thought it would be an invaluable experience to join an ambitious and forward-thinking company. The team were incredibly welcoming when I started, and I thoroughly enjoy working with them.

What professional training have you done?

I’ve just finished my A Levels. Ocorian provides excellent continuous training and support, which equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to begin working on tasks with the team.

What do you do on an average day?

I’m involved in the process of payments that need settling for clients. This is usually done by sending any invoices or payment recommendations to our payments team. I also help in collating the relevant documents for board packs for meetings. I sometimes attend these meetings and get the chance to draft the meeting minutes. I’ll circulate any documentation that needs signing that day, and make sure they get back to the relevant people as requested. Each day differs in some way to the one before which I enjoy.

What is your next step?

I plan to travel for a couple of months before heading off to university to further my studies.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Be open to new experiences as they present themselves to you. You never know what you could learn from them or where they may lead.

Age: 18 University attended: Not yet attended – currently on a gap year, intending to start at Nottingham University in 2024. Course: To be finalised – currently chemistry What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? An astronaut Favourite way to relax: playing sports and getting outdoors, or trying a new recipe Favourite place to eat in Jersey: El Tico Favourite possession: probably my phone

Operations Analyst, Mourant Governance Services What made you choose to work for Mourant?

I came back to Jersey looking for a role in financial/corporate services or something similar. I went for interviews at a few firms and once I'd received offers, Mourant was the obvious decision. The team I met during the interviews were very friendly, and the role is what interested me the most. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me considering my skills, strengths, and experience (admittedly, "Operations Analyst" sounded too cool to refuse).

Age: 23 University attended: University of Surrey Course: Sport and Exercise Science (BSc) What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? I must have wanted to be a Vet when I was 8 years old. My Vet phase was around my late primary school years. Favourite way to relax: This would have to be playing on the PS4 for an hour or so. I find that's the best way to switch off and get lost in whichever game I'm into at the time. Favourite place to eat in Jersey: I've recently been to The Beach Club at St Brelade's Bay a few times. I love the location and design of the place and I think it's the perfect restaurant to go to on a summer evening.

What professional training have you done?

I've yet to complete any professional training relevant to corporate services and finance, but I'm looking to start the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme soon.

What do you do on an average day?

I cycle into work (if the wind is going the right direction) then usually get a pastry for breakfast to start the day. In terms of work, I'll be doing a mix of working on larger projects, and completing smaller, routine tasks such as small system requests from the team and setting up new users on different systems.

What is your next step?

My next step is to focus on developing and learning in my role. I know there's so much more to learn which is exciting!

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

You have plenty of time to try out different things, so keep changing your mind until you're doing something you really enjoy. Chances are your degree might not completely relate to whatever you choose to do. This is absolutely fine, as you'll find out that your knowledge, skills and experience from university can be applied to many different things. ABOUT MOURANT

What made you choose to work for Mourant?

What made you choose to work for Mourant?

Trainee (Litigation), Mourant

Paralegal (Funds), Mourant

I was fortunate enough to get a job offer for a paralegal position at Mourant in my final year of university. I then graduated in the summer of 2022, and I was so happy to be embarking on my legal career with such a great firm. It was my first choice because of the firm's great reputation as an employer, its inclusive culture, as well as the challenging but rewarding work. Mourant encourages learning and professional growth, allowing me to start my SQE exams and supporting me on my route to qualification. I feel so lucky to be able to work with such kind, supportive and hardworking individuals.

What do you do on an average day?

Some of my main tasks include court preparation, drafting correspondence and other legal documents, research, and attending meetings. It can get very busy, but it helps having such great mentors around me.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

I would say to put yourself forward for as many opportunities as possible to get as much experience as you can, even if it's not related to your chosen career path. Choose an employer whose values align with yours, and trust that you will end up where you want to be with hard work and dedication.

Whilst still in sixth form, a few friends and I visited the Bursary Scheme Open Day at Mourant. We had talks from partners who were very engaging and interesting; they gave a great account of the working environment and culture at the firm which inspired me to apply. Fortunately, Mourant granted me the bursary and were very understanding and accommodating of my desire to defer a year to work in finance to help fund my degree. The financial support and paid work experience was instrumental in supporting my studies. Through the bursary scheme I was able to experience different practice areas within the firm and give myself a better understanding of the branches of law that interested me most. Having finished my degree in June, I was glad to have the opportunity to honour the faith and investment in me from Mourant by working full-time as a paralegal.

What professional training have you done?

Post degree, I've not yet completed any professional training. However, I intend to begin my Law conversion in the near future with a view to starting my professional exams after that.

What do you do on an average day? As a paralegal, I'm often brought into matters at various stages of completion in order to assist with activities such as drafting and reviewing documents, preparing regulatory applications, liaising with clients and issuing legal opinions, to name a few. At lunch, I often break up the day with a walk or meet friends or family in town for food. And, of course, timesheets.

Natasha Polak

Trainee Solicitor, Ogier and beneficiary of the firm’s Jersey bursary scheme. Ogier's Jersey bursary scheme enables students to earn as they learn, receiving financial support in their studies while experiencing a vibrant law firm environment during work placements. Natasha Polak made the most of this opportunity. Following her Law LLB and Legal Practice Course qualifications from Cardiff University and the University of Law respectively, she progressed to a permanent role with Ogier.

Why did you apply for Ogier's bursary scheme?

Although confident law was the career for me, I required practical experience and an appreciation of what working life as a lawyer might entail.

How has the scheme helped you?

The scheme advanced my employability by offering a wealth of experiences working closely with senior lawyers alongside my studies. I learnt from cohesive teams of well-versed specialists, which led to gaining full-time employment with Ogier as a paralegal, and I have since progressed to trainee solicitor from there. With the bursary scheme behind me, I knew Ogier was the best firm to support my aspirations.

What was your average day during placements? I was kept actively involved in a variety of matters, sampling anything from preparing M&A checklists and drafting legal opinions to attending Friday court.

And in your role now?

As a trainee, I am the first point of contact for clients, helping to progress matters to completion. This generates a number of tasks, primarily drafting documentation and attending client meetings.

Why would you recommend the scheme? Ogier's lawyers consistently rank highly in legal directories. When reviewing bursary schemes offered, it was important to me to apply for a firm renowned for its services and established reputation. Students with a keen interest in law require relevant experience in organisations that can provide them with a flavour of working in law by involving them in real-life cases, whilst also nurturing them to become technically excellent, approachable and present advice clearly and professionally. Ogier possesses these qualities, of which I experienced first hand. I would urge anyone studying or considering law as a career to apply.

126

What is your next step?

To complete my training in the Dispute Resolution, Private Wealth and Banking teams before qualifying as an English solicitor. My goal is to qualify into a practice area I am passionate about, acquiring skills and expertise that allow me to foster trusting client relationships.

Any advice for anyone considering studying for a career in law?

Get experience. Placements allow you to discover which areas of law interest you, helping in selecting optional study modules, and provide practical experiences for you to draw-on in interviews. Making relevant connections with legal professionals also stands you in great stead for your career.

What advice would you give graduates?

Don't underestimate the value of prior paralegal experience. Graduates are often eager to jump straight into a trainee role after their studies. While immediately securing a training contract is an exceptional achievement, the knowledge and confidence developed through a paralegal role beforehand undoubtedly makes the trainee transition smoother.

ABOUT OGIER Ogier is an international professional services firm with the expertise to handle the most demanding and complex transactions and provide expert, efficient and costeffective services. We have three divisions: Legal: practical advice on a unique combination of six laws – BVI, Cayman, Guernsey, Ireland, Jersey and Luxembourg. Oscar Barette Senior Associate, PwC Assurance

Age: 24 University attended: University of York Course: BSc Business and Management (with a year in industry) What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? A tailor Favourite way to relax: Playing any racket sport or getting in the sea! Favourite place to eat in Jersey: The Potato Shack Favourite possession: A painting of Bonne Nuit Bay

What made you choose to work for PwC?

I was originally drawn to the PwC brand and the opportunity to travel and work internationally through the global network. The structured graduate scheme and flexible working confirmed it was a great place to start my career, and the social impact of a cohort of up to 50 graduates and schoolleavers across the Channel Islands, has made it an excellent process so far.

What professional training have you done?

In addition to all the in-house continuous development we undertake, like Digital Upskilling, I am currently studying for the ICAEW ACA.

What do you do on an average day?

I cycle into the office and take a seat with my audit team. The audit teams I collaborate with can vary from day to day, as working across multiple clients and industries we get the opportunity to work with different teams. Checking up on progress and client discussions, we provide assurance over client financial statements so that investors, employees and any other interested parties can trust those numbers. After work, there are lots of PwC sporting and social activities to take part in such as 5-aside football, hockey, or the book club!

What is your next step?

I hope to qualify next year and then relocate overseas with PwC to another office within the global network. I'm currently torn between New York and Madrid!

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

From what I’ve experienced in the professional world so far, I’d say to simply try to meet as many different people, from various cultures and backgrounds, and get as many different perspectives as possible. Try not to overthink every decision, you learn far more on the job and in the office face to face than from any website or textbook and all of this realtime experience really will prove invaluable.

George Crosthwaite Eyre Fund Administrator at Saltgate

What made you choose to work for Saltgate?

I came to Jersey to visit my brother and ended up loving the lifestyle here. I decided I wanted to make the move, and when I was looking into local opportunities, Saltgate appealed to me on several fronts. The size of the organisation being one – I know and get on with everyone I work with. I don’t like the idea of doing 10 years at a larger company and there being a good chance you still haven’t met everyone! The open office is great too because it creates a collaborative environment. I love that directors are on our desks rather than shut away in an office – you’re able to interact with and learn from them more. I’ve felt the importance Saltgate place on work-life balance – the Engage 222 benefit being an example of that. The work ethic here is very strong, but they’re flexible and considerate of your time outside the office, making them stand out.

What professional training have you done?

My degree, but I’ll begin my ICSA qualification in June to get the ball rolling with more professional qualifications.

What do you do on an average day?

Half of my day is spent interacting with clients and working on daily tasks as they come in. I could be preparing a capital call, distribution, or dividend. I’ll gather KYC documents if requested, so passports, proof of address, etc. The other half is dedicated to hygiene exercises like record maintenance or postmeeting actions like writing up minutes. If we have a client or board meeting coming up, I’ll prepare relevant documents and circulate them to attendees. I also support the trainee in our team to get settled into their role. I’ve just been promoted from trainee myself, so it’s great that Saltgate have faith in my ability and trust me with that responsibility early on.

What is your next step?

I’d like to progress up the ranks. Most people want to be seen as taking ownership of something and doing a good job, so I welcome more responsibility.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Once you’ve identified an industry you’re interested in, apply to any role it offers and attend interviews – it’s how you work out the right path for you. I knew Saltgate was the right fit because I came into the office, met the people, and got a feel for the place. And don’t be afraid to ask questions, but don’t forget to take notes!

Age : 27 University attended : Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, US. Course : My major was Political Science. I did a ‘mini minor’ in Security Studies. What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? Like most eight-yearold boys, I wanted to be in the army. I think I wanted to be a postman too. Favourite way to relax : Reading – non-fiction biographies in particular. My favourite book I read recently was the Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Sailing also – my Dad and I have been doing it since I was young. It’s a great sport and lovely way to spend time with your friends and family. Favourite place to eat in Jersey : Banjo or La Capannina. I’m not from Jersey so have eaten in lots of places, but I’ve never experienced anything like La Capannina – it’s fantastic! Favourite possession : It’s more of a sentimental item, but at age 12 my parents gifted me a mahogany wooden desk that I still love. It’s stayed with me over the years and seen me grow up.

MORE ABOUT SALTGATE

Saltgate launched in 2007 to provide fund administration and accounting services for private equity, debt, and real estate asset classes. With offices in Jersey, Luxembourg, and London, its 200-strong team manages around US$100bn of assets under administration. As a peoplefirst organisation, Saltgate aims to attract the best people and help them develop so they can deliver exceptional client services. Saltgate embraces diversity and has a culture of openness, which is reflected in its core values – engagement, partnership, integrity, and commitment. Mark Britton

Enterprise Support Engineer, Sure What did you want to be when you were eight years old? I wanted to be a firefighter. Clearly I ended up taking a very different career path! What is your favourite way to relax? I like to watch films or play video games. Where is your favourite place to eat in Jersey? Brunch in St Johns.

What made you choose to work for Sure?

It offered an opportunity to develop my technical skills in the networking and cybersecurity area after my Digital Degree with KPMG ended, which was exactly what I wanted after completing my studies.

What professional training have you done?

I completed the Cisco affiliated Introduction to Networking and cybersecurity training/ Cybersecurity, and I am currently working towards Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). There are loads of options at Sure for developing new skills. The company has a 1-1-1 learning pledge, which asks us to spend an hour a week on our development. Whether that’s learning about a new piece of software, developing time management skills, or working towards a much more formal qualification.

What do you do on an average day?

My days are mostly spent responding to customer networking incidents, improving current device configuration, and implementing new rules to manage network traffic. Problem solving is an important skill in this job, and it’s interesting putting your brain to the test every day depending on the issue at hand. It’s not putting out actual fires, but it’s certainly dealing with incidents that could potentially have very real and damaging consequences for a business.

What is your next step?

I am working towards attaining the CCNA qualification – this essentially covers all the fundamentals of cybersecurity, IP services, programming, and networking. It’s a great qualification to have to prove your knowledge and commitment to working in this industry. My long-term goal is to be a Chief Information Security Officer. It is a role with a lot of responsibility – you are responsible for enforcing policies to protect really important data and overseeing the security of an entire organisation’s information, cyber and technology security.

ABOUT SURE

As Sure has evolved in Jersey to be much more than just a telecoms company, so has the range of jobs on offer – from customer services to IT to systems architecture – you can do it all at Sure, meaning there are many different avenues into the business. Sure offers a two year paid employment programme through the Sure Academy, a scheme offering individuals practical training and the opportunity to gain a qualification and vital experience. Permanent roles are often advertised for corporate and retail sales, customer support and engineering as well as opportunities to work within IT, finance and marketing.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Speak to as many people as you can. Networking is one of the most vital life skills you can develop. By interacting with new people in your career sector, and outside of it, you are constantly learning and getting insight into how other people work and learn themselves. When you are younger, you don’t realise how much of a benefit it is to have relationships with people in an industry you’re interested in.

COCOA 49.2

136

LIFE & ST YLE IN JERSEY

Phani Kumar Kundeti or Chef Kundeti – as he’s often called – began his journey into the world of chocolate during his culinary training in France, where he fell in love with French chocolate making and desserts. In early 2022, he launched Cocoa 49.2, Jersey’s first ‘bean to bar’ chocolate manufacturer, combining ethically sourced Indian cocoa beans with the finest Jersey dairy produce. Handcrafted in small batches, Cocoa 49.2 offers pure, nutritional, eco-friendly, and healthy chocolates without any additives or preservatives. You make bean to bar chocolate, how is that different from other chocolate makers? Most of the chocolate makers out there make chocolate from cocoa powder (highly processed and alkalized) and cocoa butter or a mix of cocoa butter and other fats (in the EU an addition of 5% other fats is allowed for commercial chocolate makers). We at Cocoa49.2 make our chocolate directly from fine flavour cocoa beans, in fact we have full control over how the cocoa beans are cared for, how they are fermented and dried before the beans reach our processing unit in South India. We gently roast the beans, remove the skin and stone grind them over 24 hours and then add other ingredients like sugar and milk powder to make our chocolate range. Because we have this total control, we can make a very clean and artisan product which gives our chocolate its distinct taste.

How long does it take to make your chocolates? Well as we are bean to bar there is initially a three-month process to make our base chocolate from the cocoa beans and from this base chocolate it takes about three days for all our chocolate products to be made by hand, ready to sell. How many tonnes of chocolate do you process a year, or how many items do you make? At the moment we process a few tonnes of chocolate a year and we have around 25 chocolate products that we sell, and this number is growing rapidly. How do you get your inspiration for new flavours? I travel quite often, and I get my new flavour inspirations from those travels and, of course, from the beautiful ingredients I find on the island too, you’ll often see products from other Genuine Jersey Members making their way into my chocolates. Do you have any chocolates to look out for this Christmas? Keep an eye out for our new bonbon selection, and come and see us at the Simply Christmas Markets in the Royal Square. We will be there for all three weekends and will have plenty of products for you to choose from and lots of samples too, so you can try the for yourself. Where can we find your products? You’ll be able to find Cocoa492 in lots of on island retailers or why not head to our website and buy from us directly www.cocoa492.com .

Our focus is mainly on retaining and locking the nutritional benefits of the natural cocoa into the final product and controlling how much sweetener goes into the chocolate making. Where does the name Cocoa49.2 come from? When we did our market research before launching the brand, we found the most widely consumed chocolate world-wide is milk chocolate but being a nutritionist, I would always opt for dark chocolate for its health benefits. But you can’t deny the people what they want so since then I had in mind to create a milk chocolate with the health benefits of dark chocolate. Which I have. We have spent several years working on cocoa bean production with farmers in the south of India and created a milk chocolate which contains 49.2% cocoa solids, this being the origin of the company name and coincidentally 49.2 is Jersey’s latitude coordinate, so it was the perfect fit.

Each month we feature some of Jersey’s creators and let them share their creative visions and handmade goods with you lot, our island consumers. If you like what you see, check out genuinejersey.com and hunt them down to support our local industries!

The tech must-haves of 2024 From VR headsets and at-home composters to phones designed for people who want to spend less time staring at screens, we take a look at the top 12 gadgets that will help improve the next 12 months of your life. Words: Sophie Marie Atkinson

Ooni electric pizza oven Until now, the vast majority of pizza ovens on the market have been gas or wood-powered, necessitating outdoor use and therefore giving them a similar seasonality to barbecues. But this new model is designed to fare equally well both inside and out.

Apple Vision Pro People have been speculating about Apple’s entry into the world of virtual and augmented reality headsets for almost a decade, and at WWDC 2023, the company finally revealed the Vision Pro. A launch is set for early 2024, which most likely means January to late April.

A budget option, however, this is not. But – stress is taken out of the equation owing to the fact that it reaches up to 450 centigrade in 20 minutes and cooks pizzas to perfection in 90 seconds flat. What’s more – you can say goodbye to buying charcoal. Remember, also, that the Ooni can be used for much more than merely pizzas.

While the Vision Pro is definitely a headset, Apple does not use that word – instead referring to it as a spatial computer. It is a mixed reality device capable of both virtual and augmented reality experiences. And just as the rumours suggested, users will be able to switch between AR and VR using a digital crown style dial. It also looks like you’re a fighter pilot (top).

Bartesian Premium Cocktail Machine

According to the New York Post, The Bartesian Cocktail Maker is like, “If a Keurig coffee maker and a bartender had a baby.” In order to make drinks that will rival the best bars in town, simply insert your cocktail flavour capsule of choice, insert it, press a button and wait for the martini or old-fashioned to come out ready to drink. All you need to do is bring the right spirit. The best part – there is no guesswork, measuring or even mess.

Ring Always Home Cam

It’s finally here – the world’s first flying indoor security camera. Home security remains a top priority for many households. Despite that, today, most cameras only offer passive monitoring. The Ring Always Home Cam – a security drone with a camera – aims to take things a step further. Originally revealed in 2020, the Always Home Cam has faced multiple delays due to technical challenges and regulatory hurdles. However, Ring now seems confident about a 2024 launch. This piece of tech can fly automated patrols in your home and stream real-time video to your phone when you’re away. This means that it can keep tabs on multiple rooms efficiently but never records when the device is docked.

Sony PlayStation VR 2 The PS VR2 is a massive step up in terms of Sony’s virtual reality efforts. In fact – did you know that Sony designed the entire PS5 with this headset in mind? The PS VR2 uses built-in cameras to measure the real-time position of your head, controller-wielding hands and eyes so it

can adjust a 4K picture to match – allowing for heightened emotional response and enhanced expression when meeting fellow players online. This is the first consumer headset to offer eye tracking and arguably the first to offer PC-quality VR without a PC.

Reencle Home Composter The Reencle Prime tries to replicate processes from the natural world inside a compact container in your kitchen. You simply set it up, add some water to the chamber along with the included Reencle Microbe mix, and then throw in the food waste. While it is similar to the Bokashi process, which uses bacteria to break down food waste, the Reencle Plus works faster and more efficiently. Once up and running, most scraps are broken down within a day, although tougher fibrous waste like banana skins can take longer. Remarkably, the Reencle Microbe mix only needs to be added once. As long as the device is turned on and gets fed occasional food, the bacteria responsible for breaking down waste will continue to breed and thrive inside the mix.

Nothing Phone (2) Nothing’s phones are designed specifically for people who want to be more intentional about how they use their device. It’s for those who want technology to be fun again – and is said to help you focus on what matters in life. The best feature is that the Glyph LED strips on the back can be programmed to signal messages, calls etc., meaning you can place the phone on its front throughout the day.

Lenovo Legion Go Having launched in October, the Legion Go is a Windows 11-based handheld that allows gamers more freedom to game however – and wherever – they want. Dodow Sleep Aid Device Most people will experience problems with sleep at some point in their lives, and up to one in three will have at least one episode of insomnia. While there’s certainly no shortage of apps to help, Dodow is a simple tech-based approach. The device projects a blue light onto your ceiling at a metronomic pace (for 8 to 20 minutes), which you match your breath to. Take a breath in when it expands and breathe out when it retracts. Users find that focussing their attention on this exercise calms their mind, sending them to the land of nod in no time.

Meater Plus

This innovative, wireless thermometer pairs with an app via Bluetooth so you can keep an eye on your steak’s temperature from your phone. What’s more, when you let the app know what you’re cooking and select your desired doneness, it will calculate the estimated cooking time. It comes with a storage case that’s also its charging station, and it will alert you when fully charged. It scores well in accuracy tests, too, and is completely cordless.

Ninja Foodi Max Dual Zone 9.5L AF400UK We couldn’t not include an air frier in this list, and this one is particularly famous among home chefs. It’s also a powerful product with an impressive 2,470W, which makes a big difference when it comes to cooking. It has six settings, so it can roast, air fry, bake, crisp, reheat and dehydrate all in one device, and you can set each drawer to do a something different, which is very handy when cooking a whole meal. You can even sync the drawers so that they’ll be ready at the same time. Bon appétit.
