Howdy Partner.

It’s great to have someone in your corner. Whether it’s a romantic significant other, a business partner, dance partner or a sporting companion. Annie Lennox’s ‘Behind every great man, there has to be a great women’ seems a bit linear in these days of exponential genders, but it’s always good to know someone’s got your back, even if they identify as a dinosaur.

Our first bumper edition of 2023 celebrates all of the sceneries of association mentioned above. Our annual Bridal Bible supplement offers advice for those hoping to solidify a lifetime of companionship, arguably the strongest of partnerships. There are a lot of things to consider and if you can make it through the wedding planning process, you’re on the right track!

With the regeneration of the Opera House at last on a purposeful track, it seems fitting that we have our own ballet school to make full use of the beautiful auditorium. We featured the artistic director, Carolyn Rose Ramsay, last year and when she suggested we use some of the new dancers in a future shoot, we could never have imagined how effectively Danny Evans would use them as the cast for our incredible Underwear Edit shoot. See it on page 76. We kept the shoot focused on the images but you can also meet the dancers in the Last Word on page 147.

Agenda, our business section, celebrates not just partnerships, but a sisterhood. We profile some of Jersey’s high-flying women who are dominating their chosen career paths in our Women in Business feature on page 93. We also meet couples and partners who support each other in the creative arts with Creative Partnerships (page 116).

Add to all that some new season interiors trends for you to match together for 2023, a great Alpine-inspired fashion shoot, a local partnership that led to a Netflix hit and a few faces of revellers from 2023 and we’ve got a well-rounded edition. Thanks for picking it up!

Welcome to the

Who doesn’t love a candle? They smell great, they create atmosphere in even the starkest of spaces, they can be mood-enhancing or relaxing, depending on their scent and they are the go-to gift for a fussy friend. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone who dislikes them, which makes candle selling a big business.

Figures from the data analysts Kantar say that between March 2021 and last year, UK consumers spent over £418m on scented candles. Why the sudden scented candle mania? The short answer is price point. Whereas scented candles were once the ultimate luxury purchase, (a large scented Loewe candle will still set you back £305) you can now find great quality candles from as little as £10. Availability has boosted sales too, and there are plenty to choose from locally. Jersey is home to an array of candle makers, many of whom use locally sourced ingredients, some are organic or oil based, others are hand-poured and made using bespoke scents. One thing is for sure, they are all utterly unique. Here are five local producers worth knowing, you can thank us later…

Jersey Skin

Launched in Sept 2020 in the midst of (and as result of) the Covid-19 pandemic this family company is headed by Benjamin Martin and is based in Grouville where the key ingredients are grown and harvested. Jersey Skin’s six key ingredients are Jersey Apple Pectin, Jersey Seaweed, Jersey Sea Salt, Jersey Lavender, Jersey Lemon Verbena and Jersey Beeswax and these are reflected across their candle scent range. The company follows an all natural, vegan and crueltyfree ethos and all candles are named after well-loved locations on the island. Our top wicks (sorry)? The Bonne Nuit is as calming and soothing as the view at its namesake bay, with scents of lavender, lilac and chamomile. Or for something a little more invigorating, you can’t go wrong with The Corbiere which smells beachy and fresh thanks to the top notes of Sicilian lemon, orange flesh and zesty bergamot. Currently sold online at www. JerseySkin.com, the candles can be delivered island wide, or to see the products in person at 11 The Parade, St Helier.

Bailiwick Flame

Bailiwick Flame started when 13 year old Emily wanted to raise money for a charity close to her heart. In less than 2 months, its success turned it into a fully fledged, small family business selling premium home fragrance products to Jersey locals, other Channel Islands and even shipping to the UK with 10% of the profits being donated to their chosen charity Huntington’s Disease Association UK. Emily, along with dad Ross and step-mum Sam are a family of perfectionists who create each and every artisan product in their home studio with care, consideration and detail. Their collection of 100% soy wax candles consist of a hand-picked selection of carefully curated scents from fresh to floral, woody to citrus, created by hand in amber glass apothecary vessels. As well as each product

being cruelty free, sustainability is also at the forefront of the brand. Materials used are recyclable where possible and packaging is kept to a minimum. So which one to choose? Take the pro’s advice and pick up a Driftwood and Vanilla Pod candle which is one of the family’s favourites. Or if you’re thinking of buying a more masculine fragrance why not try the Soft Cashmere and Magnolia candle, “it’s perfect to light when on the couch watching Super Sunday on a wet winter’s day!” says Ross. All Jersey Bailiwick products can be found in Ransoms Garden Centre and online at www.penny-feathers.co.uk

Kota

Kota Candles is a luxury candle company founded by Daisy Fernandes in 2016. Blended from fair trade and sustainable soy wax, premium grade fragrance and pure essential oils - each candle can be refilled via a drop and collect service from Daisy’s home in St Brelade’s. And if you want something seriously lux, Daisy can create you the most bespoke of bespoke fragrances. Whether it’s for your home or your business, she will arrange a meetup to

discuss what you are looking for, where the scent will be used and if there’s any other smells that either need to be masked or complimented in the area. She will then create the entire scent herself from formulation to completion whilst providing you with sample of the scents development along the way. This process can take anywhere from four to eight weeks. A wait well worth it in our opinion. Daisy’s top scent? “Breeze, it’s amazing in the spring and summer as its blend of pure essential oils of May Chang, Lavender, Geranium and Verbena make it fresh, calming and zingy.” Kota is mainly an online fragrance store with a few stockists on the island including The Trading Point, Harriet and Rose, St Brelades Bay Spa, The Surfyard and The Journey. Pretty Okay Candle Co

Claire started Pretty Okay Candle Co. after discovering a passion for making candles for friends and family. She modestly described her talents as ‘pretty okay’ and the name stuck. The brand is pretty okay to the environment too as Claire works only with a natural plant based coconut wax blend making her candles clean burning, vegan friendly, cruelty free, plastic free and they handily come with reusable jars. If you fancy trying your hand at creating your own, Claire

offers a candle workshop, bookings for which are via the website, www.prettyokaycandleco. com. Struggling with which scent to select? Take the expert’s advice and opt for Claire’s favourite Sandalwood & Orange, “this one is very calming. I also love Sexy Man, which has Sandalwood in it and just smells like a smoking hot guy!” Find the products at the shop and Candle Bar on Don Street in town and or they are available at De Gruchy, Love Wine, Jess at the Trading Point and Harriet & Rose.

Willow Jersey

Having set up Willow Jersey initially as a small interiors and lifestyle brand, owner Vanessa saw a gap in the market and decided to focus her talents on her hand-made candles and diffuser range instead; her aim being to bring the people of Jersey luxury candles at great prices. Not sure which candle to choose? No stress. Vanessa has cleverly launched the Candle Club which, if you are

new to the brand, is a great way to try all the scents as you are sent a new candle each month. For more details on how to sign up, head to the website, where you can also buy individual candles such as house favourites Wild Mint, Sunday Haze or Shades of Leather willowjersey.com. Which one will we be buying? We’ve had it on good authority that the Mint, Ginger and Tobacco is a hands down winner for these winter months. Other stockists include The Trading Point in St Lawrence, and you can find a small selection at Vallorie in West Centre.

CANDLE CARE

Here are some tips from the experts on how to make your candles burn a little longer…

The first time you burn your candles it’s important to have a longer first burn so that the wax almost melts across the surface, 2-3 hours ideally but never longer than 4.

Trim your wicks to 5mm after each burn – you can buy candle wick trimmers but nail clippers work just as well.

Candles burn best in still air – draughts can cause candles to burn unevenly

Always remember to blow them out!

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 16 PEOPLE
“Everyone loves to get a candle as a gift. It is often a treat to buy a candle, and when it’s gifted, it may be a scent you wouldn’t necessarily choose yourself.”
“Natural wax candles burn for 30-50% longer than Paraffin wax candles.”

My Jersey

PETER JAMES

Our first new feature for 2023, MYJERSEY, sees us interview the island’s most interesting inhabitants about what they love most about living on (probably) the world’s best island; from where to get the best brunch, to the shops they can’t live without and where they go to let their hair down. Who better to start the series off than the UK’s number one bestselling author, Peter James. He shares with us his favourite coffee haunt, which also neatly ties into the most important thing he’s learnt about policemen (you’ll have to read on for more!), plus where to go for a really great cocktail and the restaurant everyone should have on their radar…

Home is?

A granite house dating back to 1450, in St Saviour, which my wife, Lara and I share with our menagerie of animals which include a labradoodle, golden doodle, Burmese cats, pygmy goats, guinea fowl, quail, Kakariki parrots, budgerigars, an assortment of different hens, Indian Runner and Crested ducks and four rabbits. If we walk out of our property in one direction, we can walk across fields for over an hour without going on a road. In another direction, I can jump on my bike and be in town in seven minutes. Lara and I were constantly amused by the “East-West” arguments when we first moved here four and half years ago. Our first home was a rented house in St Lawrence, and we loved that area too. We used to walk our dogs at St Aubin early every morning and loved that beach more and more. Whenever I drive past the bay and whatever the weather, I always feel how lucky I am to live here in Jersey. Some people say it is the worst beach on the island. Well if it is the worst, wow!

18 PEOPLE
Interview: Becky Palmano Illustration: Emily Habin

My weekend ritual involves…

Feeding the menagerie first thing and walking the dogs – as every day – very often accompanied by our cats who think they are dogs! I read the JEP and some of the national newspapers cover to cover. Playing tennis singles or doubles on Saturday morning, and an 8-mile run on Sunday. I love to cook simple dishes and in winter make a curried root vegetable stew on a Sunday evening that will last several days. I write six days a week, breaking on Sundays, so on Saturdays I will normally work for several hours, while Lara works on editing my books, and writes up her case notes on dogs she has treated during the week in her work as a canine myotherapist.

The best brunch on the island?

The Good Egg. It is in a great location and provides simple modern food cooked to perfection and always served with a smile.

And to walk that off, what would you say is the best island walk?

I love the sense of beauty and sheer space walking across the dunes at St Ouen, and always with the most stunning views. There are also some gorgeous reservoir walks, Val de la Mare is one of our favourites. For those seeking a faster pace, a running friend took us off the beaten track a little and told us part of the history of Le Pinacle. I always look out for it from the land or the sea.

What about a really good coffee?

In my years of going out regularly with police, around the world, in my research for my Roy Grace novels I’ve learned one important thing about police officers. They always know the best coffee place! And so it was when we moved to Jersey. I was taken by a young police sergeant to Lockes and it was a revelation. And as proof he knew what he was doing, he has now been promoted to Inspector!

What shops you couldn’t live without?

Gorey Wine Cellar. Wine is one of our passions and I find Matt Barnes enormously knowledgeable and helpful. Midland Stores is another. Rupert Dawson is the consummate grocer - and his shop, whilst stocking so many good quality essentials, is also an Aladdin’s cave of rarely found items that make great presents – and even greater treats for oneself! Finally Animal Kingdom, our animals certainly could not live without them! They are always helpful and pleasant and their deliveries are reliable.

Where do you take friends when they visit?

In fine weather, a rib trip to the Minkies or the Ecrehous or exploring the caves of the North coast is a hard to beat experience for visitors. But we also love to simply cycle with them around the island and see all its extraordinary contrasts of stunning scenery. A walk along the dunes at St Ouen and lunch at El Tico or La Braye is another thing we love to show people, along with the lighthouse at Corbieres – which I almost described with an incorrect colour in my Jersey-located novel, I Follow You!

Tell us about the best meal you’ve had in Jersey?

My most recent birthday dinner, which we had at home for a dozen friends. Because we are doing major building work in our house we converted a greenhouse into a temporary dining room, to be away from the dust, and it was magical, eating in darkness by candlelight. It was catered by Binney and Boarder who know exactly what my (pescatarian) wife and I love. Hot and cold oysters. Lobster. Beef or Mushroom Wellington. Cheese platter and a cake to die for made of different profiteroles.

W WW.GALLERY.JE @GALLERYMAGAZINE 19 PEOPLE
Peter’s choices, clockwise from top left; The Good Egg, Gorey Wine Cellar, Binnie and Border, La Braye, Locke’s, El Tico.

Which restaurant would you recommend to someone visiting Jersey for the first time?

Lara and I have always loved Green Island, with Alan being a brilliant host, and for much the same reason Quayside with Martin and his great team, and the Moorings. We love the Oyster Box for its location, Anna’s for its great food and Upstairs at Anley Street for its Sunday Roast. There’s a new kid on the block, Tresor, run by Cosmon, the former Maitre D’ at Quayside, which I strongly suspect will be one to watch.

And for an after dinner drink?

I spent many of my formative years living and working in Canada and America, where I lost my taste for English beers but never took to American ones – so instead I developed a love of cocktails. So when we were taken to the speakeasy, The Blind Pig, for the first time, I felt, wow, now this is my kind of place!

What was your first memory of Jersey?

My wife and I had exactly the same first impression of Jersey – that it was like England was years ago but with high tech and superfast internet! But there is one abiding memory that will forever distinguish Jersey from England, in my mind: We had only been here a few weeks, in April 2018 and were told we needed to get our cars registered. I found someone to help me and he rang me on a Friday morning to tell me he had my Range Rover booked in for Monday morning for its mandatory examination, but that I needed to have my Jersey driving licence for this process. I told him I hadn’t even applied for one yet. He told me to go along to the St Lawrence Parish Hall and they should be able to do it the same day – I might have to pay a small premium. So I dutifully did it, feeling very sceptical, knowing in England it would take weeks – at best! A very nice lady behind the counter said that if I paid £25.00 I would be able to pick my licence up from the Post Office in town after 4pm. Scarcely able to believe it, I arrived at the post office in St Helier at about 4.35 to see a barrier across the front entrance and a sign saying it was closed until Monday. I was just about to walk away when a lady waved at me from a window – a kind of “don’t go away” wave. Moments later she opened the front door and said, “I’m very sorry dear we are closed – is it anything urgent?” When I told her I had come to collect my licence she dashed off and a moment later reappeared with it! If this had been England I would probably have been given two fingers and told to sod off and come back in a month!

Describe your perfect day spent on the island?

My perfect day begins with a spicy omelette made from our own eggs, with chillies, onions, peppers, mushroom and cheese, then walking the dogs over the surrounding fields, and feeding the menagerie. It will be followed by a run of 5-8 miles, either around our home area, or down at Gorey. On my perfect day a lunch of Jersey oysters and a crab salad would be just the ticket, with a glass of Chablis. An afternoon spent lazing on a beach with a good book – I love finding a book that hooks me! Then at 6pm I make the perfect martini – with Grey Goose, Extra Dry Martini and, essential, four green Sicilian olives, put on my very eclectic music playlist and write a chapter of my new book. At 8.30pm Lara and I sit down to dinner, then I take the dogs out for their last walk of the day, check on the birds in our aviary, then we hunker down to watch a movie or something on Netflix, or else I read until my eyes close!

Where do you feel most inspired?

Ever since my teens when I read that one of my favourite poets, William Butler Yeats wrote at the top of a tower, I dreamed of writing in a tower! Our move to Jersey made that dream come true. My office is at the top of a large, 70foot high granite tower. I have a 360 degree view - to the south across the sea to the French coast, to the west to the airport and the most stunning sunsets, to the east across gorgeous countryside and an urban landscape to the north. People ask me how I can get any writing done with all that to look at, but I find it immensely inspiring. And not many unwanted folk climb the 72 steps to bother me!

And what are you working on at the moment?

I’m working with the writers on the ITV series GRACE, on the next four adaptations of my novels, which start filming in April. And I’m flat out editing my new Roy Grace novel, titled, STOP THEM DEAD, which will be published on Sept 26th. It deals with the vast new illegal trade in puppies – breeding, importing and theft – which exploded during lockdown, and where organised crime gangs are making more money than out of drugs – with far more lenient sentences.

Finally, describe Jersey in 3 words… Nicer than Guernsey!

Peter James’s most recent work, Picture You Dead is available from Amazon and Waterstones now.

GIVE FUNDRAISING AND CHARITY IN JERSEY

For anyone under 30, this is a giant ‘cheque’ VG:

Very Good...

Employees at VG raised more than £14,500 for Jersey Hospice since the start of its financial year in May and the end of January.

A total of £14,545 was raised through a range of initiatives dreamt up by the company’s fundraising and marketing teams in celebration of the firm’s 40th anniversary - a sum that surpasses any previous fundraising efforts. One of the flagship events which buoyed fundraising efforts was the “VG Quiz of the Decades” in November which saw a team from Jersey Hospice and over 20 valued partners of VG – including legal, accountancy and recruitment firms – assemble teams of trivia masters to flaunt their cerebral prowess across a spectrum of trivia spanning the four Decades that comprise VG's history. The evening was a true celebration of community spirit with just over £4000 being raised for Jersey Hospice and Collas Crill being crowned winners! In another successful initiative as part of the firm's festive celebrations, the fundraising team rounded up a range of raffle prizes donated by key suppliers which saw VG staff purchasing tickets for their chance to win prizes on offer, ranging from wine hampers hampers and restaurant vouchers to spa experiences and hotel stays.

Brooks Macdonald gave £37k in 2022.

Employees at Brooks Macdonald International in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man worked together to raise in excess of £37,000 for more than 20 local and international charities over the course of 2022.

The fundraising activities included the firm’s flagship Golf Day in Jersey at The Royal Jersey Golf Club and, with the support of a number of corporate teams, raised more than £21,000 to support Cancer Research UK (Jersey) and its critical research to help combat cancer. Other fundraising activities over the year saw members of the team in Jersey swim from Jersey to France, compete in a static cycling competition and take part in the Grace Crocker Foundation ‘Jersey to Southampton’ walk. Employees across all islands also helped raise money to support relief efforts in Ukraine.

The charitable initiatives supported by the firm are chosen each month and driven by employees, supporting a broad cross section of community causes in all three islands that are close to employees’ hearts. Richard Hughes, CEO of Brooks Macdonald International, commented; “Our teams across all three islands continue to show real passion for raising vital funds for a diverse range of causes and I’m so pleased that they’ve been able to raise such a good sum over the year. Our flagship Golf Day in Jersey in particular succeeded in raising a considerable amount once again to help fund the vital work of Cancer Research UK. I’m looking forward to seeing how the efforts of our people continue to make such a positive contribution as we move into 2023.”

After a two year absence, Jersey Hospice Care are delighted to welcome back keen cyclists and anyone up for a new challenge, to go for a spin to raise funds in memory of Jay Morris.

Jay was a keen racing cyclist and founder member of the Velo Cycling Club, who died from cancer in 2003, aged 30. The event was initially set up to raise awareness of Jay’s illness but he sadly died before he had the chance to take part. The event went ahead in his memory and since then, Jay’s family have organised the Spinathon annually as a tribute to Jay, raising over £225,000 for Jersey Hospice Care.

Jay’s Mum, Jenny Morris commented, ‘Alan and I have been running this event for several years as a tribute to our son, who had a real passion for cycling. The Spinathon is great for getting our community together in unison, to raise money for Jersey Hospice

Care. It will be so nice to see all the familiar faces once again this year. Thank you to all people who participate in the challenge and to their sponsors.’ Marina Brockbank, Community & Events Coordinator at Jersey Hospice Care, said, ‘We are honoured to have had Jenny and Alan put on this event for us over the last 19 years. Their dedication to running this event in memory of their son is an inspiration to all of us.’

The event place at Club Carrefour, St Lawrence on Saturday 25 February between 11:00 and 17:00.

To be one of the 80 spinners and secure a one hour slot, complete a registration form available at jerseyhospicecare.com/events or phone 07797 763950. The registration fee is £10 per person, which includes a t-shirt and everyone is encouraged to raise sponsorship funds in memory of Jay and others like him.

Volunteering ADVENTURES

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 26
Phil, Debbie and Julie
?

Some years ago, Phil had the opportunity to take a trip with Jersey Overseas Aid, the island’s publicly funded relief and development agency, in order to volunteer in a country far from home. With a team of like-minded, altruistic individuals, Phil was able to see first hand how important overseas aid and ‘boots on the ground’ charity work can be; furthermore, how gratifying it is to help others. Volunteering and being of service is really good for the soul. Travelling to other countries to experience cultures and lifestyles different to our own brings a whole other level of adventure and spiritual growth.

Phil and his many partners at Kafunjo have already helped create a school with classrooms and a clinic, which is currently under construction. The original plan to provide basic education and healthcare (starting in 2013) has grown to something much bigger; Kafunjo now takes care of 150 children who live on site and 400 who go for day-care and educational purposes.

Since his JOA experience, Phil has banded together with other philanthropic folk in Jersey and off-island, and now volunteers for a charity based in Uganda, The Kafunjo Project. Whilst this initiative is not a Jersey Overseas Aid project, Phil’s journey certainly began with them and has led him to become part of a community both in Jersey and Africa.

“The purpose is to build on what we have already. Many of the children at Kafunjo cant afford to go on to further education after the age of 16, so we are building a vocational ‘green school’ on site. Children will be able to learn things like textiles, woodwork and other tangible skills that they can hopefully use to build careers and earn money.”

Phil and his many partners at Kafunjo have already helped create a school with classrooms and a clinic, which is currently under construction. The original plan to provide basic education and healthcare (starting in 2013) has grown to something much bigger; Kafunjo now takes care of 150 children who live on site and 400 who go for daycare and educational purposes. In order to fund the costs for materials and travel, the volunteers raise money in their respective communities ‘back home’. For example, Phil, Debbie and Julie (left) spend their weekends undertaking hard graft, gardening and clearing, cleaning and anything else in the remit of ‘odd jobs’ around the house for donations. They have raised thousands over the course of the last year and are now off to Uganda to get their hands dirty, building the green school. There are lots of local businesses who

partner up with initiatives like this too and as a quick shout out, Phil wanted to say thank you to some of them so… Easygrass, Environmental Garden Services, GBN Growers Ltd and Mailmate.

Whilst Phil and some of the team are setting off for Uganda, the deadline has now passed to apply for one of JOA’s 2023 volunteering trips. However, there are some very interesting opportunities on their brand new website, which include professional and personal bursaries as well as grants for local charities working abroad. JOA will also soon be opening up applications for its Programme Associate placement and for the Jersey sponsored UN Junior Professional Officer role. Most recently of course, Jersey Overseas Aid played a huge part in the Ukrainian Appeal, and delivery of much needed essentials to those impacted by the war via its partners on the ground in Ukraine. In fact, you can see how Jersey’s money has been used on JOA’s website, so be sure to check it out.

You can read more about The Kafunjo Project at www. kafunjo.org and you can email Phil if you’d like to find out how to get involved… the more the merrier as they say, many hands make light work.

If you’re interested in finding out more about Jersey Overseas Aid, how you can get involved or about how JOA is translating the generosity, skills and compassion of the people of Jersey into effective assistance for the world’s most vulnerable people, take a look at their website www.joa.je.

Four courses, five stars.

Who could resist travelling from France to babysit grandchildren? Within 24 hours of your arrival your son unexpectedly invites you to join him at a fine-dining family restaurant for a 4-course evening meal.

Icouldn’t resist – I jumped at the opportunity and I’m not in the least sorry I did because this was one of the very finest meals I’ve ever had in a restaurant – not least of which was because NOT ONE of the courses let down the others. We’ve all had excellent experiences, but there’s usually a down-side or course which knocks the experience from the top spot; not in Bohemia though.

Despite the near-freezing temperatures outside, the welcome warmth of the restaurant and bar induced a swift removal of layers which were rapidly whisked away – and the welcome from the staff was equally warm. This was partly due to the fact that my son knew some of them, but they’d not known me and were friendly and welcoming nonetheless.

As the cocktail waiter began preparing our predinner drinks we had a chat with Dimitri, the Maitre d’ and Tim Philips, the Hotel Manager. What warm, friendly people they are.

I’d never previously tasted an Expresso Martini and was warned that I’d go home at 11pm, wired up and ready to start work, but there was – fortunately, perhaps - only time for one of these before we were called to our table. I didn’t even get a sip of the Hemmingway Duquari my son was enjoying.

The mis en bouche was a small venison tart, which I liked because the meat hadn’t been over-dealt. The other taster was a crisp, creamy onion truffle mousse in a sugared crunch of pastry – savoury, yet smooth.

The menu was a joy with no fancy titles followed by an explanation – just a clear outline of what to expect each course to contain, such as:

Jerusalem artichoke, Granny Smith apple and smoked eel;

my choice, and it was simple, compact and exactly what it said it was going to be. I could taste the apple in the base of artichoke, but I have no idea how they achieved the flavour of the topping on that little tart – the whole thing was totally sublime.

The beetroot entrée was described thus: Manor Farm beetroot, hibiscus and goat’s cheese tart; Horseradish

How do these simple ingredients sound to you? Because you’d have to taste the combination to appreciate the experience of this small, almost chilled but mighty, tart with a crisp base and such delicate, beautifully rich flavours dashed with a kick of horseradish. We’ll be trying to replicate this when we get home, but I’ve no intention of laying out the whole menu for you, here. You’ll have to go and try it for yourself or check online. But DO try it.

Having been introduced to the sommelier, he advised a red wine for me and a white for my son – a Pauillac and a Chablis were delivered to our table with a flourish.

One course down, three to go – and so we moved on to our second course. For me that was Roasted Veal Sweetbread Roscoff Onion, Comté & Yeast Flavours Wild Garlic, Veal jus. I loved the sweetbreads (another new sensation for me; they’re pancreas or thymus glands no matter what you might otherwise have thought) and the other choice was mackerel. Both were amazing.

My companion opted for Cured & Torched Local Mackerel, Cucumber, Jalapeno & Buttermilk. The mackerel was simply presented but the flavour was heightened by the addition of pickled cucumber which fused well with the charred flavour. It was a `light’ dish, but thankfully so – since this was the new 4-course menu.

The sweetbreads looked interesting indeed, but when the `jus’ was poured over it, the sauce which was already present turned into what could only be renamed `Martian jus’ – tiny green blobs appeared everywhere. I noticed it was served on a very complimentary, themed plate. Alongside the sweetbread was a poached or steamed (I presume) small onion and the combination was just perfect; light and delicious.

Meanwhile a bread platter was tucked into –with two types of bread roll and two of butter, one of which was seaweed. I asked if I could

acquire any of this to take home with me, but we think it’s not for sale on the island – unfortunately (plus Brexit rules, but…)

The wine was running out and we were no longer hungry but had plenty of room for the next presentation – and what a presentation….

My companion had the cod, which was cooked with a hazelnut crunch in a tapenade-stye coating. The textures were subtle and we decided the jus mixed with the potato was as eternally satisfying as any combo-gravy-mash from childhood, but with an almost caramel aftertaste.

It was served with Lardo di Colonnato, which Wikipedia so kindly informed me is “ a type of salumi made by curing strips of the pigs back fat with rosemary and other herbs and spices. Lardo di Colonnata is cured in a marble basin. The most famous lardo is from the Tuscan hamlet of Colonnata, where lardo has been made since Roman times.”

Thank you Wikipedia.

I had the duck breast. I have cooked duck breast dozens of times and in many different ways, but never, ever have I managed anything as perfect and succulent as what I ate that night – it was perfect. Who would have thought to add the flavours of rhubarb and pistachio to duck? And we weren’t ashamed to fight over the duck-fat brioche we shared to scoop up the duck jus which remained in the ramekin either – positively juvenile!

Having experienced a recent leaning towards vegan eating, my son stated that irrespective of social norms, polite behaviour and etiquette, you know when you’re making the most of things - and that this is a clear indication of menu approval and appreciation.

We were coming to a close and neither of us thought we could manage or finalise the meal with the more fulsome flavours of cheese, so we both had the chocolate dessert. Two sticks of loveliness beautifully decorated with blobs of dark, noisette and white chocolate and topped with a mousse and gold leaf. It was very striking, not too filling and more-to-thepoint, for me, not too sweet. The perfect finale (I might still have managed a cheese course, had I been pushed to it).

We were two very satisfied customers.

We wholeheartedly recommend that – special occasion or just mid-week treat – the 4-course menu at Bohemia is something never to be regretted or forgotten.

Food with gusto.

Italian food seems to be close to everyone's heart. Pizza, Pasta, Wine (I know it’s not a food, but it’s a staple); So, it’s no surprise that over the past months, we’ve had not one, but two new Italian restaurants pop up. Enoteca is based in St Aubin, and The Rigatoni, is set in Liberty Wharf.

A quick online search tells me, the word Enoteca translates best to “wine library”, and I don’t know about you, but when I think of a library, I think of a quiet, intimate place filled with knowledge, a place to learn, and in a wine sense, a place to try. Once you’ve seen the scale of the wine menu at Enoteca, you’ll see the name is completely fitting for this wine bar meets restaurant meets wine shop.

Rigatoni, meaning rigid in Italian, is also the name of a pasta shape. A tube shape, wider than penne, (though narrower than cannelloni), it’s rigid on the outside. This allows the sauce to be captured, and sit within the tiny grooves. Science says, this holds more sauce than a smooth pasta does and, in my mind, the perfect ratio. Enough about the perfect pasta shape and sauce-to-pasta ratio…. It’s also the name of one of St. Helier’s newest and most sunsoaked restaurants.

Enoteca

Serving fresh-daily pasta, cheese, speciality cured meats and of course, wine (specifically, natural wine), Enoteca is the newest restaurant to bless St Aubin with its presence.

Their no-fuss menu (amongst other things) includes a choice of vegetarian, seafood or meat pasta, as well as a vegan plate. It’s a menu that allows for change, and is a refreshingly get-what-you’re-given approach - they don’t need an expansive menu. With no dish over £18 it’s well priced for the great atmosphere.

“We offer a small, simple menu with the focus on typical Italian food and local produce.”

With a wine menu that’s almost as dense as a page of the dictionary, the housewhite-please kind of diner might find this overwhelming, but for the wine aficionado in your life, this place is a little slice of heaven. While dining in Enoteca, you’ll be proudly served only natural wine without any added sulphites. It’s an offering of which they’re proud. They also serve orange wines, so it’s a place to appreciate something out of the ordinary.

Unusually, enoteca has an online wine shop, as well as offering bottles in store. So now, like a good book in a library, once you’ve found the one you like, you can take it away, to be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

The Rigatoni:

While Enoteca has a focus on typical Italian, The Rigatoni takes a more ‘modern day Italian’ approach, serving oysters alongside antipasti and sandwiches, and of course, plenty of cocktails, pizzas and pasta. Not many places offer oysters to start and a genuinely good pizza as a main. It’s the combination we didn't know we needed.

The Rigatoni’s central location makes for a great after-work drink or dinner - it’s just around the corner from Liberation Station, so is the perfect place to stop for a tipple before getting on the bus home.

The alfresco seating is some of the best in town. Take in the people moving around town, appreciate Liberation Square and the fountain with all its tourists, ice-cream eaters, seagulls, and bench-sitters taking a moment. Do this all while sipping on an Aperol on a hot day it’s almost as though you might be sitting in an old Italian square (until Le Petit Train comes into sight and you’re transported right back to St. Helier)

As well as enjoying a glass of wine, or enjoying a fantastic meal, you can also sit outside and take in the morning bustle with an espresso. Yes, The Rigatoni is also open for breakfast, and serves up a delicious range of Italian-style focaccias and ciabattas, pastries and coffee before moving onto more lunch-based foods. It’s the best of both worlds.

The recent fit-out has focussed on a natural palette, it’s simple and trendy and just an easy place to be. Overall, we’re happy to see another quality Italina restaurant on the Streets!

GENUINE ARTICLES / CRAFTY ISLANDERS

WE’VE BEEN FEATURING AND PHOTOGRAPHING MEMBERS OF GENUINE JERSEY FOR OUR ‘GENUINE ARTICLES’ AND ‘CRAFTY ISLANDERS’ FEATURES FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO BRINGING YOU MORE IN 2023 AND THIS MONTH JOHN GARTON , CEO OF GENUINE JERSEY, LOOKS BACK AT SUCCESSES OF LAST YEAR.

We’re sure we’re not alone when we say the simple summary of Genuine Jersey’s 2022 was… busy! If we’re honest there’s never a year that isn’t. Much in part due to the number of Members whose interests we represent, currently more than 180; a figure which has continued to increase throughout the last few years, with several people still sharing stories of being inspired to change their lives because of the pandemic. There are some people who go as far as leaving their successful careers in the finance industry to become full-time makers, creators, or producers.

We offer our Members a great deal more than just the opportunity to use the Genuine Jersey mark on their qualifying products, we are also on hand to provide them advice and support with developing their businesses. They are also all offered the opportunity to feature in several local publications (including this one!) and take part in our Meet the Member video series, which are filmed by local company Slingshot and are made possible thanks to the financial support we receive from Evelyn Partners, our Patron (we’re always on the lookout for new Patrons or Sponsors!). We have produced more than 70 videos now, each telling the story of the Member and their product. If you’ve not seen any of them, you can find a full library on our social media channels, Facebook and Instagram. We love working with Slingshot Films on the videos, as they cleverly ease the Members' nerves to bring their stories to life. It's incredibly special to see.

We also, throughout the summer months, organised a number of artisan markets in St Aubin, and last year we also did three weekends the Royal Square, in order to bring our Members into St Helier. We currently have ten markets planned for this summer and the first of those will be in St Aubin on Saturday 22nd April, a full list of the dates and locations will be available on our website and, of course, we will also post them on our social media channels.

We couldn’t share a round-up of 2022 without mentioning perhaps the most prestigious of all the accolades received by our Chairman Jim Hopley, who in December was finally able to collect the MBE which had been awarded to him by the late Queen in her last ever New Year’s Honours list, for his support of local causes.

Other success stories for 2022 include Jersey Sea Salt making an appearance on an episode of the BBC’s Countryfile programme.

The Le Maistre Family continue to delight us with the creative ways they encourage people to visit them down at Master Farms in Grouville. This year saw them embracing Halloween with a Pumpkin Patch where you could ‘pick your own pumpkin’, dig your own potatoes or find your way through the maize maze. They are such excellent advocates for the local farming community, we can’t wait to see what 2023 brings. Congratulations must also go to Chris Le Masurier of Jersey Oyster Co. on his Institute of Directors win at the end of last year.

On a final note, if there are any businesses out there who might be considering their sponsorship options for the year ahead and would like to talk about ways we might be able to work together, we’d love to speak to them. We like to think we offer a fantastic way to align with a genuinely Jersey project, which goes on to support the island. We really couldn’t do what we do for our Members without the support of our Sponsors.

FLUX by image-maker Danny Evans.

If you missed the exhibition last month, you missed out. Flux was a unique exhibition that explored the connection between fashion, photography, film, and technology. The inspiration for the project started with 14 outfits initially commissioned for Arthouse Jersey by local and international fashion designers. When Danny saw these pieces, he knew he had to create his own unique vision of them, along with his top make-up artist Sophie Cubbage and star models Grace, Eleyshir and Toni.

The garments arriving at Danny’s studio promoted a year-long process of photographing, filming and 3D scanning them from every angle. Danny then brought all of the assets together and then “continuously dissected, re-edited and manipulated the images to re-visualise each piece in a new form”. Danny evolved each image in its own direction, based on the underlying fashion piece's textures, colours and shapes. The resulting body of work took the form of 14 large-format prints, a video installation and AR (augmented reality), accessed via QR code as his Capital House xhibition. He tells us “This project is not over yet, and more visuals will be released over this coming year”.

Danny’s love of fashion and technology shone through at the show, as he tells us; “Fashion and photography have always been linked. However, technology changes what is possible on a daily basis. Designers and brands are now releasing one-off digital collections you can wear on social media through augmented reality. As a result, digital Fashion generates 97% fewer co2 emissions than the production of a physical garment. Flux is an attempt to explore the concept of sustainability further. As Fashion and image-making continue to inform and shape each other through the digital realm. Flux is a space to reflect and inspire how Fashion will be consumed and viewed in the digital age”.

About the artist.

These lessons are part of Haute Vallée’s initiative to build music lessons into the curriculum and give all Year 7 students an instrument to take home with them.

I spoke with Haute Vallée’s Head of Music, Charlotte Cooper, about the importance of the initiative and how partnerships with the community have made it possible.

How did you convince the school that the music lessons needed to be built into the curriculum?

I am very lucky to work in a very supportive school where providing opportunities for all students is high priority. By making something compulsory, the students just take part without having to feel different. Allowing the students to select which instrument they would like to play, makes them responsible for their own decisions. If the instrumental lesson is part of the curriculum, this avoids taking students out of other subjects through the school day. The lesson is split into two halves, half the lesson being on their chosen instrument and the other follows the school music curriculum which includes playing the keyboard, vocals, alongside listening and appraising.

Why is it important for every student to learn an instrument?

Students will never find out if they enjoy playing music until they have the chance to do so. It is important that all students have the same opportunities; music is inclusive and should be available to all. In the past, instrumental lessons were often only for those who could afford it. Music helps students develop all kinds of skills, not least the social aspect of playing in a group. Each

student starts from the same point (complete beginner). This creates a safe and supportive environment. Some students find reading or writing a challenge, but discover they have a natural talent for music. Music is a universal language; it makes no difference which language you are fluent at speaking. Music helps students with literacy and mathematics, and it helps with coordination and confidence whilst stimulating creativity and developing memory skills.

Why is it important for each student to have their own instrument to take home?

With each student having the opportunity to take an instrument home to rehearse, no one is left out. This encourages students to be responsible, to remember to practice, to bring their instrument to school, to be organized and to work independently. Opportunities to perform on stage also require students to have their own instruments, and with the recent pandemic, sharing instruments is not recommended. I have been expressing my passion for this project for many years, so I set about finding support from Islanders and other local musicians as well as the school.

Who are some organisations you have partnered with to deliver the programme?

We have been lucky enough to a have support from a variety of sources. I spent a lot of time discussing my ideas and generally asking for help from businesses. The idea to apply for funding support from Jersey Arts Strategy came about after a conversation I had on a beach! We have funding from Jersey Arts Strategy; teachers and some instruments from Jersey Music Service; sponsorship for instrument repairs from SGB; repair and support from Broken Wind; instrument donation from Windcraft; donations of unused instruments from several Islanders. We have introduced the learning of snare drum into the curriculum, too, with the intention of developing a School Drum Corps. We were lucky enough to have a workshop earlier in the year from The Royal Marines which inspired the students.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 38 CULTURE
Words Traci O’Dea

Why is this programme so important to you as a teacher?

I have been Head of Music at Haute Vallee school since January 2004 and during this time I and Mr. Young, my very talented second in department, have encouraged and taught many students to play musical instruments and perform on stage. Some have gone on to be successful performers, DJs, recording artists, band members or teachers - playing locally and on the international stage. We regularly have many students opting to take Music at KS4. Over time, I noticed that most students were only learning the instruments that we were able to teach them during their school music lessons, instruments such as piano, guitar, drums. Very few students are fortunate enough to be able to afford their own instruments let alone the extra tuition fees that will support the further development of their skills and talents.

Music is such an important part of the education journey and carries with it so many benefits for young people that they can carry forward into later life. I have always believed that all students should have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument without having to pay - this has been a vision of mine for many years. Without “traditional” instrumentalists who will play on film soundtracks? Who will entertain the crowds at celebrations such as Liberation Day?

Our local bands, musical theatre events and orchestras need young people to keep music live in the future so we can all enjoy the power that music can have on us.

Learning Partnerships

Adult & Community Education at Highlands offers courses that start in February and March. All are perfect way to spend time with your Valentine, Galentine, or Palentine.

Sound Bath Meditation

Tuesday, 7 February 2023 / 6.30 - 7.30pm or 8-9pm 1 SESSION

During this session, students will immerse in waves of sound. The powerful sound waves reduce the stress, rush and haste that have accumulated throughout the day. Participation in a relaxation session allows participants to pause, relax, deepen the breath, release tensions, and feel lighter. Students should wear casual, comfortable clothes. Students should bring a yoga mat, pillow, and blanket.

Dipping Into Drag

Thursday, 9 February 2023 / 6:30 - 9pm 1 SESSION

This one-day workshop teaches students about the history of drag queens and drag kings and offers students a chance to experiment with makeup, fashion, wigs, accessories and attitude to find their drag identity. Makeup as well as some wigs, clothing and shoes will be supplied, but students are encouraged to bring their own ideas.

Peace of Mind Workshop

Monday, 20 February 2023 / 6 - 8.30pm 4 WEEKS

In this four-week course, students will learn how peace of mind is available to every one of us but a lot of times is hidden. On this course, students will explore how amazing our minds are and how we've (innocently) misunderstood how they work. Simply knowing a little more about how our minds work can help us live a more peaceful, balanced and contented life.

Beginers Massage for Two

Tuesday, 21 February 2023 / 7 - 9pm 6 WEEKS

For pairs of students who want to learn basic Swedish massage. At the end of this five-week course, students will be able to administer a full body massage safely, professionally and effectively. Students will learn the basic underpinning structures of the body. They will learn the effects of Swedish body massage on the body and techniques used. Pairs of students may be partners, relatives or friends.

Do Nothing Meditation

Wednesday, 22 February 2023 / 6 - 8.30pm 4 WEEKS

In this four-week course, students will explore how by simply 'doing nothing' for short periods of time, they can achieve the many benefits that usually come with longer meditation practices. Busy lifestyles make it difficult to switch off, and some people struggle to build a regular meditation practice, but this method removes the struggle by asking students literally to do nothing. Students should bring their own yoga mats, blankets and pillows.

Linocut Printing for Beginners

Wednesday, 22 February 2023 / 9.15 - 11.15am or 7-9pm 3 WEEKS

At the end of this course, students will be able to display a basic confidence in designing, carving and printing linocut prints. Students will learn about the history, equipment and techniques involved with linocut printing. Students will be able to demonstrate skill in employing these techniques on their own original creations. Students will take home their creations at the end of the course as well as a starter kit of tools and ink to continue experimenting. Cost of materials is included in the fee.

Reconnecting: Sense of Smell

Monday, 6 March 2023 / 10am - 12pm 1 SESSION

At the end of this workshop, students will have a better understanding of their sense of smell. Students will use colours and words to explore the different ways that they experience fragrances and aromas. This workshop is led by artisanal perfumer Frances Lamb.

THE SEVENTH SUMMER OF ART.

Entries for the CCA Jersey Summer Exhibition are open and this year we’re getting involved with a new Gallery Magazine- sponsored prize.

CCA Galleries International are inviting visual artists to apply to take part in the Jersey Summer Exhibition 2023. The exhibition is based on the model at the Royal Academy Summer Show each year. Exhibits are selected by a panel of professional artists and shown in a group exhibition and all artwork will be for sale.

The gallery is known for its longstanding relationships with internationally renowned artists such as Sir Peter Blake, Dan Baldwin and Bruce Mclean, and worked with some of the foremost artists in British Twentieth Century art, Terry Frost, Sandra Blow and Donald Hamilton Fraser. Since opening in 2013 CCA Galleries International has made work by these artists and many more available to the Jersey audience through the sale of limited-edition prints, original works, artist discussions and workshops.

Now in its 7th year, the Jersey Summer Exhibition continues to be the highlight of the cultural calendar in Jersey and drives the standard of artwork being made. Having work exhibited at CCA Galleries International has helped launch the careers of promising Jersey artists, as well as enforcing that of those already established. The exhibition is open to emerging and established artists alike and the gallery encourages applications from artists in every stage in their career. Artists working in all mediums are invited to apply through CCA INternational’s website with applications open from Wednesday 1st February with the deadline falling on Friday 31st March.

Judges Panel

The Panel of judges for the 2023 will be announced shortly.

Each year

CCA Galleries International invites a guest panel of professional artists to join the judging panel for the Jersey Summer Exhibition. These are artists of international acclaim who use their years’ of experience and knowledge to carefully deliberate the artworks selected for exhibition.

The 2022 Jersey Summer Exhibition judges were sculptor and fashion designer Nicole Farhi and Turner Prize nominees artists The Wilson Sisters (Janae and Louise Wilson).

Toward the end of last year, we sat down with writer, Kal Bonner, her husband Tim and their partner in production, Tom Killick. We had no idea at the time, chatting over Kal’s latest project, just how much of an impact it would have. A few weeks after we met, this local, creative trio saw massive streaming success with a true story, turned movie; rewritten, reedited and retold by Kal.

production partners

Reaching the top three movies on Netflix over Christmas, Big Boys Don’t Cry is a testament to strength forged in unlikely places, and its undoubtedly Kal’s most significant work to date. But she couldn’t have done it alone and as we discussed the collaborative efforts of the production, this shining example of the potential in partnership unfurled into and throughout the fabric of the film. The trust in partnerships and in the resulting processes that bring about fresh thought, fruition and sometimes even healing, is the theme between the team behind the scenes of this movie too. Partnerships matter and Kal & Co sew up the notion and a motion picture, masterfully.

Writer, editor and producer, Kal Bonner is somewhat of an enigma and barely talks to the media. Her husband Tim also works in the industry, in the very forward-facing realm of production, he also acts as Kal’s de facto manager. Their symbiotic relationship is a partnership through and through; in fact, whilst Kal rarely gives interviews, you’ll find that no conversation with Tim goes without a hearty and sincere sum-up of Kal’s latest achievements and projects. Whilst Kal sets her mind on a project, Tim satellites around her, working in the wings and always, (I mean ALWAYS) supporting her with gusto. He could easily be in PR, but it’s the intrinsic understanding and synchronicity they share that enables him to do such a fine job on Kal’s promotion. He’s not wrong either; his pride and accolade is very much a fitting tributehis wife is a genius (something Tim feels is bolstered by her autism and ability to see the big picture before it’s written; hyper-focused with profound creativity, Kal applies her neuro-divergent abilities like a super-power).

I asked Tim about the partnership he shares with Kal, being together, married, working… it’s a lot… “You go through life and hopefully find a soulmate. I found my soulmate. We are intrinsically connected. It’s all too easy for people to walk away when things get difficult. But when you are intrinsically connected, you just wouldn’t think of it. Kal was diagnosed with Lupus right when she was forging a new part of her career, she needed some support with certain things and so that’s what I did. And that’s what I do, I support her in everything. Kal got me into this industry, into old movies, the classics, black & white films… Since working with her I have come to learn so much and I watch her as she works - she commands so much respect from people, sitting in a room or walking the red carpet with all sorts of notable and famous directors and actors - and there’s me and Kal, doing our thing, it’s a ride.”

Taking Big Boy’s Don’t Cry for example, a story that has been brought to life on film from the autobiography by Paul Connelly. Having been a boarder at the notorious St Leonard’s in the eighties, his story is one of horror. Child abuse was rife and many of Paul’s classmates had suffered terribly at school and thereafter; many committed suicide, which is what spurred the police investigation and Paul’s autobiography.

Holed up in an editing suite with Tom Killick from Jersey-based, 3C International, Kal’s new vision and script needed expert skills and energy to boot. Tasked with reworking previously shot footage, film clips, out takes and the sound and aural elements to fit Kal’s new script and storylineTom had his work cut out for him. Both Tim and Kal did mention that Tom has the patience of a saint after working with him on projects before and managing to bring Kal’s vision and script to life.

“With total creative control of the film and such a sensitive topic, I needed to work with an experienced editor who knew how I operated. I've worked with Tom Killick before, so I felt comfortable shipping the postproduction to Jersey, where Tim Bonner acted as a local Producer. It's important to point out that the project was pitched to an Oscar and BAFTA winning production house in the UK who lost out to our Jersey team. I'm glad they did and am very proud to have been involved in this film. I do hope that its message is understood, that it reaches other victims of abuse and goes some way to offer hope.”

With many on-screen depictions of stories like Paul’s, desensitised viewers often sadly expect (and too often actually see) graphic and gratuitous violence in order to portray the severity of a scene. In Big Boys Don’t Cry, Kal purposefully does the polar opposite with the script, without using graphic detail in an overt way to convey the abuse. Less is definitely more in terms of impact thanks to her decision. Working with such a delicate topic meant bringing a deep and tangible character-arc for Paul’s character (played by This is England actor, Michael Socha) and a thought-provoking storyline that leaves much to the imagination.

“When Executive Producer, Richard Hart, brought this project to me, it was evident that this was an extraordinary and unique story. One that required absolute respect. Extracting Paul Connolly's emotional development from child to adult was a priority. This is how I approached the revisualisation of the storyline and character development.”

Through trust and openness, the teller of a story, or the maker of a movie, has a momentary relationship with the audience, whether it’s through sharing something good, or something so devastatingly bad. “Paul Connolly's story has many shadows, but through this film, Paul permitted me insight into a world that is the stuff of nightmares. Where inner conflict doesn't end with a court case, and retribution doesn't always offer salvation. It is not comfortable viewing, and so it shouldn't be.”

It will interesting to see what Kal & Co do next. One thing that is glaringly apparent from our chat in the theme of this edition of Gallery and that is -

Trust is tantamount when talent partners up.

Check out Kal Bonner’s movie, Big Boys Don’t Cry on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Andreia & Flávio Wedding Profile

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 48 BRIDALBIBLE

Where did you get married?

We wanted an all-in-one venue with a beautiful backdrop where we could hold our ceremony, take our photos and have our reception. I chose Samares Manor because we absolutely loved the gorgeous botanical gardens and Japanese pergola. It’s such a charming and magical place. It’s close to home and they allowed our dog to come and join us for the ceremony and a bit of the reception. It was perfect!

Reception

Marquee Solutions created the most beautiful marquee for our reception on the grass opposite the Manor House. They were incredible from the beginning. From our initial consultation to setting up on the day, bringing every aspect of our vision to life! The Good Stone provided our catering and the food was just amazing. They hosted a wood-fired feast which consisted of rustic canapés, a three course meal and pizza in the evening. To finish off we enjoyed the most beautiful cake by Samantha Wedding Cake Design. Samantha is truly an artist. Not only are her cakes absolutely delicious, they are luxurious, stylish and elegant. Our cake table itself was such a striking feature and it really wowed our guests. All of our suppliers worked fantastically together to make everything perfect.

Snaps

Daisy Barnard was our photographer and she did not disappoint! We chose her because we loved her style of photography - natural, romantic and timeless - and our photos were just that! She was fantastic on the day, almost invisible so we didn’t even notice she was there most of the time taking amazing natural shots behind the scenes of those real and raw moments. It was so emotional looking back through our gallery for the first time and reliving our special day. Our photos will forever be treasured.

The dress

I got my dress from Anna Trigg and it was the first dress I saw in the shop! I tried a few more and even went to another bridal store to see if I could find anything to top it, but my heart knew - it was the one! It’s true what they say, when you know, you know! Anna is so talented and incredible at what she does. At my request she added more embellishment to the dress and adjusted it to my shape and it fit like a glove. I was so nervous about wedding dress shopping because I suffer from scoliosis of the

Saturday 23rd July

spine and I’m very self conscious about my back. But my dress was so flattering and Anna even made me a bespoke floor length veil to match, it was perfection.

Blooms

Claire at Eden by Claire did our flowers and she absolutely blew us away! Claire is so experienced and knows exactly how to turn a bare marquee from a blank canvas to a piece of art! From our initial meetings, Claire and I bounced off each other so well. I explained to her my ideas and she made further suggestions to suit and the end result was magic! Claire made the whole process so easy and enjoyable. Walking into the marquee on the day and seeing the beautiful arrangements she had created was such a great feeling. She really bought our vision to life.

Favourite personal touches on the day…

We may be a bit biased but our favourite personal touches on the day was our signage and stationery, which was made by us through our own company Treasure Box Studio. We created our welcome sign, mirrored table plan, table numbers, other table signage, gifts and cards box and place settings. We went with frosted and gold mirror acrylic for our signs and it was the perfect finishing touch to an already stunning marquee, so timeless and classy. The signs tied everything together so well and we had so many compliments from our wedding guests.

Best bit?

Our wedding day was originally supposed to happen in 2020 but it was postponed twice due to covid. Since then we welcomed our son Luca into the world and having him at our wedding was so special. It was a really emotional day. Watching Flávio tear up as we walked down the aisle was an unforgettable moment. We finally said “I do” and got to share our day with our beautiful baby boy and our dog Simba. The weather was glorious and everybody was so happy. We’re so thankful to all of our suppliers for making the day go as beautifully as it did.

Any tips / recommendations for Jersey Brides?

It’s never too early to start planning. If you want to enjoy the build up to the wedding which is just as great as the actual day itself, don’t leave any aspect of your wedding to the last minute. Plan early and then sit back and enjoy the wedding planning process.

A Amazing Anna

"My fittings with Anna were everything I had dreamed of. Anna has the unique ability to make every appointment feel like your first and I felt special every time I walked through the door. Anna took time to really listen and find out exactly what I was looking for and was able to personalise my dress, by changing the back and the sleeves. We even added in some of my grandmother’s handwriting to one of the layers. I am beyond grateful and just wish I could do it all over again!"

“My dress was perfection and it was a lot more than just a wedding dress to me, it was a dress full of memories with my talented Auntie, Anna Trigg, and for that I’ll be forever grateful. At each of my appointments we had so much fun together playing around and trying out new things, it was so special. I had the best time, getting the dress was a real highlight of my whole wedding process and it all came together so beautifully for the day. I feel very lucky to have had my Amazing Auntie Anna make my dream dress!"

A wedding video is one of the best ways to be able to get to re-live your magic day, time and time again. We met up with the brilliant Will & Georgia from Submarine Creatives to find out what their 5 Key Capture Moments are.

“Every wedding is unique and as a husband and wife duo we know how special your big day will be! It is important to us to create a film that you and your loved ones will treasure forever. We film and edit weddings in a cinematic style, so that they’re beautifully recorded and timeless.

1. Getting ready – the excited buzz in the air when a couple are getting ready for their big day.

2. Ceremony & first kiss – the most important part of the day! When a couple look at each other it’s just pure love.

3. Couples’ shoot – this gives the couple time to step away - just the two of them - and where we capture some magical moments.

4. Speeches – nothing compares to hearing a loved one’s voice when you re-watch the video.

5. First dance – this is always unique to a couple and truly special.”

Tell us about your reception. We both wanted a relaxed, outdoor, nature-inspired feel to the wedding, we loved the idea of having the ceremony and reception all in one place and space for the guests to enjoy the grounds.

We had a dream team of suppliers! Highly

recommend all of them; we worked with the amazing Marquee Solutions to create a custom marquee to fit our guests and match our rustic theme, they even helped us last minute to put up another tent outside the main marquee in case there was rain (luckily no rain!)

Nelson Terris was our celebrant and DJ! We were so relieved to have the local legend be such an incremental part of the day, we really appreciated his laid back but very professional style, he kept us all on time and made us laugh along the way. We shared a Spotify playlist with him so he knew exactly which songs to play (& not

Jersey Kitchen provided BBQ sharing boards for the main meal which worked really well, allowing everyone to eat as much or as little as they wanted, the staff were brilliant. Timings were perfect and the food was top quality and delicious. Big shout out to Tony and the team!

We asked Beau Waugh to provide the acoustic guitar music for the ceremony and for the cocktail hour, we really loved his old-soul classics and he is a lovely guy.

Who did your photos?

Sophie Darwin was absolutely amazing, she and her husband Dean captured all the key moments throughout the day, Sophie felt more like a guest and ensured she took all the photos we wanted. We really love Sophie’s relaxed, natural and candid style, and she knows all the best spots in Samarès!

And the flowers?

We worked with the very talented Rachel Vibert. I shared a mood board with her about the direction I was looking for and

gave her creative license with the flowers and foliage. We collected lots of old bottles for a more personal touch on the tables and she filled and arranged themI really loved the look, it was simple but really effective.

My mum made our confetti from scrap eucalyptus leaves using a heart hole punch - we loved it so much.

What was the best bit?

We loved the informal feel, it felt more like a big party with all our friends and family than a formal event. Fantastic food & drinks + stunning location + good tunes + the best suppliers = the perfect wedding.

Any tips or recommendations?

Lots of tips! I had trials with my Make Up Artist, Kate Morrison, and Hair Stylist, Sophie-Lea Kelly, to make sure we were prepped and happy for the wedding morning. They were both incredibly talented and professional.

We had a meet-up a couple days before the wedding with all the guests to get to know each other, have a drink together and

3rd September 2022 at Samarès Manor.

familiarise themselves before the wedding - which we really think brought a relaxed vibe to the day.

Getting ready I was so anxious, my amazing Make Up Artist gave me a piece of gum to concentrate on chewing instead of stressing (just remember to take it out before walking down the aisle!)

Always plan for a rainy day and then you won’t be caught out - even if it costs a little more - it’s worth the assurance your guests will be dry!

Give your bridesmaids a job - I gave my girls a disposable camera each to capture as many group shots of our guests, which worked really well.

We created a Google Photos album and asked all the guests to upload their pics to it so we could easily access and share after the wedding.

Things will change on the day, but you can’t control everything so don’t worry and keep smiling, dancing and make the most of every moment.

Hair-dos for the big day

Words by Kayleigh Dwyer, Owner of Oasis Hair Salon.

Over all the years of my hairdressing career, nothing quite compares to the joy and honour of being asked to do a client’s hair on the most important day of her life. It’s a privilege, a huge responsibility and something which I truly adore! The opportunity to express the client’s dream ‘do’ always fills me with excitement. It’s always fun to see the client’s own style and personality being uncovered during the months of planning that make the final result a total WOW!!

Imagine

Words: Anna Renouf, Creative Director at Wonderlands

Ultimately, as a wedding stylist, my goal is for couples to set foot in their venue on their special day and be blown away by how thoughtfully and creatively the whole wedding has been brought together visually.

To do this, I will listen to your decor dreams and then work with you to draw together a comprehensive design plan which includes all the visual elements of your big day, reflecting your dream wedding. Wedding stylists are trained in the skills required to pull all your ideas together, creating a cohesive concept and design plan that works, aesthetically and logistically.

Practically, that means organising, creating and sourcing all the props and decor pieces required. It often also involves working together with your florist and any other suppliers to bring the plan to life. Sometimes it also means designing and making bespoke props.

Choose A Location As Unique As You

There is so much to consider when you’re planning a wedding but it all becomes easier once the big decisions are made. One of these decisions is where to hold your ceremony and celebration, and Jersey Heritage has a host of beautiful locations that are as unique as you.

Gone are the days when you were tied to traditional venues. Instead, you can start the story of your life together at a fort or a castle, a pagan spiritual site or a Victorian house –whichever magical and unique place takes your fancy and feels most like “you”.

By choosing one of more than 20

Jersey Heritage locations for your wedding, you’ll also be giving something back to the Island; Jersey Heritage is a registered charity and all income generated from weddings goes directly towards maintaining and funding projects to care for and protect the Island’s rich history.

Whether you’re planning a simple, intimate ceremony or a lavish celebration, your wedding will be made even more memorable set against the backdrop of a historic site, many of them also offering somewhere to stay over. Here’s a flavour of some of the most popular sites that couples choose

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 56 BRIDALBIBLE
J Jersey Heritage

Mont Orgueil Castle

Parish: St Martin

Atmosphere: Majestic and breath-taking

Mont Orgueil castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Britain and one of the most striking and attractive sites on the Island. Built in the 13th century and with spectacular views of Jersey’s east coast and across the sea to France, it creates a breath-taking backdrop for a wedding ceremony and/ or reception.

Elizabeth Castle

Parish: St Helier

Atmosphere: A spectacular experience

Elizabeth Castle sits within the picturesque bay of St Aubin, overlooking the south coast of Jersey and is completely surrounded by the sea twice a day. You and your guests will be transported across from the shore in one of the Castle Ferries and ceremonies and celebrations are held in the 16th century Governor’s House. A truly unique experience.

La Hougue Bie

Parish: Grouville

Atmosphere: Magical and tranquil

This ancient, magical site is among the ten oldest buildings in the world. The rural, peaceful grounds are capped by a grassed hill topped by the small picturesque 12th century chapel of Notre Dame de la Clarte, where small religious ceremonies can take place. Civil ceremonies can be held on a beautiful Victorian veranda and celebrations can be held in a marquee in the shade of mature trees.

Hamptonne Country Life Museum

Parish: St Lawrence

Atmosphere: Idyllic and rural

Hamptonne is a collection of fine, traditional Jersey farmhouses dating back to 17th century, which have been restored to their original beauty. Located in the heart of the Island’s countryside, it is an idyllic site for a wedding ceremony and reception. Options include taking your vows under an original porchway; signing the register in front of an open fire; and celebrating your union overlooking a beautiful meadow.

Jersey Museum, Art Gallery & Victorian House

Parish: St Helier

Atmosphere: Beautiful and intimate

The Victorian House adjoins Jersey Museum & Art Gallery and is one of the finest examples of a 19th century townhouse in Jersey. The house has been fully restored so that it appears exactly as it would have done in 1861 when it was home to a prosperous family in Victorian St Helier. Civil ceremonies are held in the beautiful gas-lit drawing room and the museum courtyard and gardens are available for drinks. The house is also perfect for an intimate reception.

Heritage Lets

Parish: Various

Atmosphere: Stunning locations

This range of lovingly restored properties are set in some of the most stunning locations in Jersey, providing a truly memorable backdrop for a wedding celebration. Each has different features and facilities, but they are all comfortably furnished with wellequipped kitchens and modern bathrooms for a wedding party to utilise.

Wedding packages vary in price but start from £3,000, which means there is something for every budget. All bookings come with a wedding coordinator, who will show you around the site, advise on plans and arrangements and be on-site to ensure everything runs smoothly – leaving you with the peace of mind to make other big (and small) decisions.

Hannah & Dominic

Saturday 23rd July 2022

Where did you get married?

We legally married on 22nd August 2020 at the L’Horizon Hotel, during a very small, intimate (8 of us including the celebrant!) ceremony in keeping with covid restrictions in place at the time. We knew we always wanted to celebrate our marriage with all of our friends and family with us so after three postponements, we finally had our bigger wedding celebration on 27th August 2022 in the grounds of St. George’s School (La Hague Manor). We were also fortunate enough to have a baby in May so the big celebration was all the more special.

Snaps

We wanted Andy Le Gresley to photograph our wedding as in our opinion, he is the best around. So much of what made our day perfect was down to him. Andy captured the most treasured moments from our day, including a picture of Dom and I with our little boy smiling up at us and our guests questionable dance moves! Andy’s presence, guidance and reassurance throughout the day went above and beyond.

Blooms

The incredible Claire (Eden by Claire) did our flowers and she managed to surpass every expectation. Claire created the most gorgeous arrangements we’ve ever seen, walking into the marquee (by the brilliant team at Marquee Solutions) for the first time was literally breathtaking. She made everything so effortless for us, even helping Dom to rearrange the tables to ensure everything was just perfect. She has an incredible talent and is gorgeous inside and out!

Favourite personal touch?

Sadly, both my Father and Dom’s Father passed away many years ago so it was difficult not having them there, but my bridesmaid stepped up and delivered the most incredible speech in place of the traditional ‘Father of the Bride’ speech. This meant the world to me and as she’s a bit of a comedian, she had us all laughing (and crying!) from start to finish.

Any tips / recommendations?

Saturday 25th June 2022

Where did you get married?

We were married at Le Ferriere a beautiful old Jersey property. The grounds are perfect to accommodate one of the large marquees from the great team at Marquee Solutions. Plus there was space for outdoor seating and a fire pit which created mood and atmosphere in the evening. Our caterer was Jersey Kitchen who were absolutely fabulous, nothing was too much trouble.

Who took your photos?

Danny Richardson came recommended by word of mouth, which is always a good sign.  He was very patient on the day and went along with our own ideas such as one of our favourite photos of my veil blowing in the wind.

Where did you find your dress?

I purchased my dress from Ellis. Hannah was brilliant, she made me feel comfortable straight away, she asked about our plans to ensure she could suggest options in keeping with the style of our wedding. She took time to listen and made suggestions without being over persuasive. It was a lovely day spent having fun trying different dresses, veils and shoes.

What about your blooms?

My flowers were from Wild Thyme. I wanted the flowers to reflect a summer garden with a pastel theme. They achieved this perfectly using seasonal flowers that looked as though they were freshly picked that day. They created a beautiful flower arch for the backdrop of our ceremony which framed our photos perfectly.

Where did you get your cake?

Our beautiful cake was created by Flour patisserie and it was amazing!

Favourite personal touches?

The music - La Ronde brass concert band turned up as a surprise to play ‘all you need is love’, and my very special friend Alice Veitch who sang with them, but who had learned the words to ‘Our Song’ for our first dance and she sang it to us and our guests in the evening with the accompaniment of her band, Little Black Dress.

My hand henna - as a celebration of my father’s heritage and to share our culture with friends and family we had an Indian Mehndi ceremony held at Kismet on the Thursday before the wedding. We all dressed in sari’s

and we had henna done, we also had Indian music and dancing too! I wore the same sari that my mum wore to her engagement party. The background of henna is that you include the initial of your partner on one hand and your own initial in the other for them to find. It also symbolises positive spirits and good luck for the marriage.

Any tips or recommendations?

I enjoyed getting creative and made the pallet board photos, order of the day and welcome sign myself. The devil is in the detail and it’s the special little touches that make a difference but if something doesn’t go to plan don’t let it ruin your day, you will look back and laugh at it in years to come.

What Is Photojournalistic Wedding Photography?

Telling your true wedding story - that is what wedding photojournalism is really about - by discreetly capturing all of the genuine, heartfelt and beautiful moments that you want to hold onto forever. Think of it as an undirected and unposed visual narrative of your day. A narrative that is told through beautiful, authentic imagery that should transport you straight back in time, to relive those incredible moments all over again.

I love capturing weddings in this style, it has been the most rewarding work that I have ever done and I’ve now shot hundreds of weddings throughout Jersey, UK and Europe.

Authenticity is key - I prefer not to encourage a photo list, nor work to a template - I take a natural and personal approach to capture the visual story of your whole day. From the intimate and small details whilst getting ready; holding back the emotion as you walk down the aisle before you

catch each other’s eyes for the first time, or the behind the scenes kiss, as the reception and party draws to a close.

But are there ever times during the day when I think your photographer should give a bit of direction? The honest answer to that is yes, but only in very limited circumstances. Like after the ceremony if you want to disappear from the crowd for some romantic portraits together, but you feel awkward in front of the camera - I will just encourage you to be yourselves and let your personalities shine through, as it can make a massive difference to the end result. But other than the bridal portraits and a few family group shots, I think it’s so important to just let the day flow. I like to stay close to the action, but discreetly and unobtrusively, ready to capture every part of your beautiful day.

VVino! Wedding Wine advice by the team from Love Wine

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a popping cork to get the party going as you celebrate your special day. Any worries of mismatched bridesmaids and lost bouquets suddenly disappear when that first glass is poured. Need a couple of pointers on what to stock up on for the perfect day? Love Wine’s here to help!

To Get The Party Going

Binon-Coquard Brut ClassicThis is our house champagne at Love Wine and coincidentally the one I’ll be serving at my own wedding in April.

Binon-Coquard are a grower producer meaning that they grow their own grapes as well as make the wine… something not as common as you might expect. Because of this they get the best possible quality for a far less eye-watering price than the big boys of Reims.

£28.95

A Special Bottle for the Top Table

Hommage Au Pinot Noir

This is for the connoisseurs. A Blanc de Noirs like nothing you will have had before. Henri Guiraud are another highly respected grower in Champagne, but unusually they age their base wines in old barrels, much like a still wine. A homage to Pinot Noir is correct, as this wine perfectly represents the lofty heights this delicate grape can achieve when treated properly.

£73.95

Something

for the Curious Ones –

The Trouble With Dreams 2017 English Sparkling Wine is having a moment, but few of us have had the chance to taste a genuinely great bottle… until now. This wine is what all the fuss is about. Made by superstar winemaker Dermot Sugrue of Nyetimber fame, this seriously delivers. Bone dry with such restrained elegance, this is one to open on the day and keep a few back to open on anniversary celebrations yet to come.

How incredible would these look on your wedding day? Aurum’s Brigitte Adolph Lace Jewellery range is created by Brigitte in Germany. She studied at the very same goldsmithing school that Julie Blampied attended in Pforzheim, in the Black Forest. Her delicately beautiful creations appear at first glance to be made from lace fabric but closer inspection reveals finely detailed work in silver. The patterns are inspired by the lace from her own wedding dress and some of the pieces are embellished with softly romantic pearl accents. There are many variations on a theme to choose from, for example; drop earrings, pendants with or without drop pearls, and more elaborate colliers or bracelets.

YYes to the blooms

Ffi from Bella Fiori gives us the flower trends for 2023;

Your wedding flowers can really set the scene and feel of your big day, often leaving a lasting effect as part of the wonderful memories that you and your guests treasure. The trend for 2023 sees a lot of foliage for bouquets and tables centres with eucalyptus still being popular choice, and roses and peonies will once again be dominating the early part of the season. Colourwise, we are still seeing a lot of whites but less of the traditional dusky pink elements. Lots of weddings are adding in more colour with vibrant spring tones. Wildflowers are a big trend this year and also I expect to see more use of wispy grasses, clematis, daisies, and touches of cornflower blue.

Whatever your theme, your florist will work with you to develop and advise you on everything from colours that work together, to flowers that are in season. Making sure that it all reflects your own sense of style for your perfect day. If you need any advice on your wedding florals, just get in touch.

AFIRM Flexible

The best advice I would give young women is to have a good work ethic and surround yourself with people who support you and who you can learn from
“ “
LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 94 AGENDA

Tell us about your career journey so far

Throughout my GCSEs and A-Levels, I knew I wanted a career in finance as that would enable me to work as well as study in Jersey. While still at school I started working at a local financial advisory firm to gain experience in the finance industry.

When I finished Hautlieu, I started a full-time job at the same company and after a year and a half, I realised that becoming a financial advisor was not for me. My original interview for my next role was meant to be for a job in performance and rewards management and at the last minute it was changed to private wealth, which was the best thing that happened to me career-wise.

I used to think that not going to university might set me back or make me less attractive to employers, but that has been far from the case, Since joining Ogier, I've been promoted to assistant manager in our Private Wealth Services team and I continue to develop and grow in my role.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I get to deal with a range of luxury assets, charitable causes and really interesting people on a daily basis. The opportunities are unlimited, from the possibility of travelling for work, to growing relationships with our clients so we can best look after them and their families for generations to come.

I also enjoy how every client is different and you need to tailor your style of working to suit them and their family. I enjoy getting to know people who have really interesting backgrounds, from those who started life with little to no money and worked to CEO of a company to individuals who have carried forward their family's businesses and continue to fulfil their ancestors' goals.

What do you look for in the culture of the firm you're working for?

For me, the most important aspect of a firm is that they look after their employees as well as their clients and actually deliver on this. Ogier has been incredible at supporting me through my career progression to an assistant manager and also during times when I have experienced personal struggles. This multi-dimensional support has made me feel privileged to work for such a great firm.

Ogier understands that a firm needs to look after its employees so they in turn can best look after their clients. Ogier is also focussed on continuous innovation to make life better for its clients and its people. The firm has many cultural initiatives in place surrounding diversity and inclusion, sustainability and wellbeing. The cultural values of Ogier are truly embedded day-to-day and this is very important to me.

As part of the firm's commitment to mental health and wellbeing, Ogier offered me the opportunity of becoming a certified mental health first aider last year. This training showed me how to look out for the signs and guide people towards getting the support they need.

about

your involvement in diversity and inclusion

Ogier has been driving diversity and inclusion for a few years and our knowledge as a firm continues to grow which helps Ogier be open and mindful of everyone's circumstances, across different ethnicities, genders, ages, disabilities , sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds. We have weekly 'Workshop Wednesdays' which inform employees about different subjects, from menopause and disability to LGBTQ+ topics , together with individuals setting personal objectives to keep diversity and inclusion at the forefront of their mind.

I was lucky enough to be part of the focus groups when the diversity and inclusion initiatives first started, and as part of that we reviewed Ogier's communications to make sure we're being inclusive.

What would be your advice to other young women looking to start a career in finance?

The best advice I would give young women is to have a good work ethic and surround yourself with people who support you and who you can learn from. I have been fortunate to have worked with some great people over the years, most of whom I still work with now. They have instilled in me the importance of being hardworking, dedicated and that you don't need to go to university to be a successful woman in finance.

How do you unwind outside of work?

Bikram yoga, a form of yoga which is completed in a room with a temperature of 40 degrees heat, is something which I started with a friend a few years back while I was going through a tough time. For me, having to focus on each pose with the added challenge of the heat enables my mind to focus on only that and nothing else. It's always helped me to unwind and it is great to have time without my phone or being in front of some sort of screen.

Trailblazer

Laura Winter, Investment Manager at Rathbones

What do you do day-to-day?

A lot. There’s a huge amount of variety in my day which I love. From meeting with prospective clients and preparing investment proposals, to managing client portfolios, undertaking research and trading securities, as well as maintaining client relationships throughout their investing journey.

No two clients are the same. Each have different backgrounds, priorities and investment aims. It’s our job to understand them. I work with busy professionals, families, professional advisors, corporates and charities. What they all have in common is that they want to take care of the future. I customise portfolios to meet each client’s particular needs which are aligned with achieving their financial goals while utilising Rathbones’ core investment process and philosophy.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Before starting my working day, you’ll always find me in the gym. I love resistance training, it sets me up for the day ahead! I even took that hobby a little further and qualified as a personal trainer too. I’m quite a foodie, especially combining travel with good restaurants – I’ll often do some research before travelling to new places to scope them out, my partner has the same love as me for this which works very well!

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

I believe everyone brings different skillsets to the table irrespective of gender. However, female characteristics tend to express more empathy and as such add a different dynamic to client interactions. Women tend to strive for perfection and have strong organisational skills which not only adds value to the client experience, but also the running of the business itself.

Females are still in the minority in the Investment Management industry, so there are plenty of opportunities to step up and stand out! I’d love to continue to see more women chose a career in Investment Management, as I believe this will encourage more women to engage and discuss their financial matters and goals! I would highly recommend the book ‘Girls that Invest’ by Simran Kaur if you’ve ever wondered how on earth the stock market works and want that initial understanding of how you, as a woman, can claim a space for yourself in the world of finance!

Best bit of your job?

The people. I really do believe that as much as I enjoy my day-to-day role as an Investment Manager, that what makes it, is the people you work with and the clients who entrust you to manage their money for them. Rathbones takes a very collegiate approach and the relationships I have formed with my colleagues and clients have been pivotal to my career development.

Hardest bit?

Volatility comes hand in hand with investing. When markets are going through difficult periods, it involves tough conversations with clients. It’s actually steering through those times that really embeds the client relationship and reinforces the trust clients have in you with their wealth.

Career highlights so far?

Successfully passing my CISI Level 7 Chartered Wealth Manager qualification at the age of 25, and as I stepped out of my final exam I received a message from my boss at the time to say I’d been promoted!

...an active member of the Jersey Trusts Working Party (instrumental in developing Jersey trust law), a regular author of leading legal texts in the field and a frequent speaker at industry events. She has received a string of award wins over the past few years including gold winner of the Woman of the Year – Professional Services Award at the Citywealth Powerwomen Awards 2020.

Kellyann was also part of a select group constituted for the Government's working party on ESG last year - considering how Jersey should position itself when it comes to ESG, working on the trusts legislation and the trust and company codes of practice and put a consultation paper together. She was also invited by Jersey Finance to participate in a select and exclusive round the table meeting, discussing the issues that our finance industry is currently faced with and how we might overcome those issues. She’s also a mother and pioneer of positive change in the workplace, proactively championing diversity. We were very excited to meet up with Kellyann to find out more from this truly inspirational women.

What do you do day-to-day?

I am a private client lawyer and advise on Jersey succession, trusts and foundations. Being a private client lawyer makes for a diverse role, which is why I enjoy it so much. No one day is the same!

Currently, my days involve meeting private clients and tax advisers, flying to London to meet with clients and their foreign advisers, advising institutional trustees administering trusts, liaising with intermediaries (on island and abroad) and barristers on client matters, accompanying our litigation lawyers to Court, assisting with the negotiation of legal documents, providing expert opinions for foreign firms on trust matters to assist with foreign voluntary tax disclosures. The list goes on – and that’s just the client work!

I’m also a partner at my firm and so I spend time every week in partnership-related meetings, I like to get involved with projects relating to the strategy and growth of the firm.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 98 AGENDA
Kellyann Ozouf is Partner and head of International Private Client and Trusts at Collas Crill, and so much more…

What is your career highlight. so far?

Much of my work is confidential, so difficult to talk about, but generally it’s those times when I’ve helped a client overcome a truly challenging situation. This is when you know you’re making a difference.

The most rewarding and perhaps motivating thing for me, is knowing that I really am the trusted advisor for many of my clients.

Highlights so far as my career is concerned, would be being recognised as a leader in my field in legal directories and private client publications. When others speak highly of you, you know you’re doing something right! For me, though, I’m less interested in personal accolades than I am knowing that my clients are happy with me. That’s why I do my job.

Why do you champion women in the workplace?

Ultimately diversity at all levels of the firm is a good thing for everyone –colleagues, clients and the communities we work in. The legal industry has become more gender diverse over the years but, as with many professions, there are still fewer women making it to senior positions than men, and even fewer making it to equity partnership who are also mothers.

As a woman, a mother of two young children and a Partner within the firm, this matters to me on both a personal and a professional level.

I strive to be a good role model for my children and also for my female colleagues who are coming up through the ranks (three-quarters of my team are women). I want them to know that it is possible to reach these positions and be a mum, and importantly for me, a mum who is present. Part of the challenge is finding an organisation that will enable, encourage and support you. It’s not easy. It’s far from easy. I’m not sure I know a female leader who is a mum and who doesn’t constantly question whether they have the right balance, but I also know there are mothers out there who would love to work, but think it’s not possible to continue in law after giving birth. That’s a crying shame. We need this to change.

I am lucky to work in a progressive firm that champions diversity and inclusion and recognises people based on merit and talent. We are always looking at better ways to do things to ensure we continue to create a culture where brilliant people are proud to work.

Is there a female who inspires you in business and why?

In all honesty, no. Ironically, if you asked me is there a male who inspires me in business, I’d name a couple! I think, though, this is symptomatic of the majority of my supervising partners and the leaders in the businesses I know well, being male. Over time, I’m sure this will change.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

This is a difficult question to answer without unintentionally offending somebody! I personally think it’s still easier if you’re male, unfortunately.

I am, though, of the opinion that women can and do think differently to men and diversity of thought is a good thing in life and business.

Clients are at the centre of the work I do, so it is really all about people. Being a trusted advisor means more than just offering legal advice – it’s about building relationships, understanding people’s goals and helping them realise them. Speaking honestly, some of my clients (females included) instruct me, in part, because I’m female!

Thinking about our business, being a woman can make it easier for female staff to share with me some of their struggles and certain health issues in the knowledge that I’ve more than likely experienced similar and yet still progressed within the business. Likewise, I’ve had males confide in me with mental health matters. I think women can sometimes be seen as a little easier to speak to.

I am, though, a genuine advocate of diversity at all levels of any business. Men and women of all backgrounds working together can make a phenomenal partnership.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

I think now is a great time to take the opportunity to inspire other females - the landscape has massively changed since I was a graduate trainee in 2006. There is much more focus and action on inclusion and equality. Mourant has a 'one firm' ethos and nurtures a culture of inclusion and mutual respect where everyone is encouraged to be the best they can be.

What is the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part is coincidentally the part I also enjoy the most. Often we need to work as a team under pressure and to tight timeframes. While this can be challenging, I'm one of those people that thrives under pressure and enjoys the buzz of it.

Is there a female who inspires you in business?

What do you do day-to-day?

I check my emails before I get into the office and make my way into the office after the school run with a coffee in hand.  I catch up with the team about the priorities for the day ahead. Day-to-day, I attend meetings, have calls with intermediaries and clients, fulfill my role as an authorised signatory in the business, get involved in transactional matters and also the day-to-day administration of our client portfolio.

I don't think I could single one out. Honestly, I'm of the view that every woman's success should be an inspiration to one another. I have friends in all different types of businesses, some with their own businesses, and they all inspire me and I learn something from each of them.

What are your career highlights so far?

I was originally a corporate lawyer in my twenties and qualifying as an English Solicitor in 2008 was a highlight. I've had some great opportunities over the years and worked on some amazing deals with some great clients, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. More generally speaking, I feel like retaining traction in my career and juggling this with life as a busy mum over the last decade, is something that I'm proud of and I hope inspires others that they can do the same with the right support. Joining Mourant has definitely been a highlight, it's truly a great and supportive place to work with a real team spirit, and I feel fortunate to work here.

What do you get up to outside the office?

I’m a mum to two boys aged 10 and 7 years and they keep me very busy and on my toes, along with renovating my house. I enjoy boxing at Boxinbusiness and I usually try and squeeze in at least four classes a week, as even on a busy day I always feel so much better for it. I’m a social person and like going out for food and enjoying the many good restaurants Jersey has to offer.

An Associate Director within Mourant Governance Services, Carly Vardon has blended a life as a busy mum with her progression through a high-flying career.
I'm of the view that every woman's success should be an inspiration to one another.

A diverse Directorship

Theola Byrne is Audit Director at KPMG in the Crown Dependencies

What do you do day-to-day?

My day-to-day role varies depending on the day! In a sentence I am responsible for the delivery of audit engagements to my clients and the issuance of audit reports on their financial statements.

As part of this I work closely with my teams every day – coaching team members through their work, working with managers to ensure we are delivering high quality audit services and liaising with my clients on issues and questions as they arise. Outside of my primary role I am a member of our Real Estate business group, which focuses on delivering training to our team members, providing industry updates and insights to the department and sharing best practices across member firms.

I also chair our Diversity and Inclusion committee, which focuses on raising awareness, celebrating the diversity in our office and promoting inclusivity – so that all our people feel comfortable in bringing their whole selves to work. Collectively this keeps my days busy, varied and always interesting!

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

I think there is a benefit to having a different perspective and different life experience –whether that is due to being female or any other factors which make us unique. Sometimes it is these differences which help stimulate new ideas and practices, which ultimately leads to a better working environment for everyone.

What is the hardest part of your job?

The hardest bit of my job is probably dealing with the myriad of new and expanding regulations and standards which emerge year on year. Luckily in KPMG we have a great technical team who train us through this and great colleagues who I can consult with on a regular basis whenever I have any questions. Having a range of wonderful colleagues to consult with (both locally and across our global network) is one of the aspects of KPMG that I value the most - it helps foster coaching and mentorship and is an important part of our inclusive culture.

Is there a female who inspires you in business?

There are many! Without being too cheesy it is the women who I work with on a daily basis rather than one individual person. Whether it’s the people I work with who demonstrate quality and excellence in their work, my friends who have chosen completely different career paths

and who are thriving through delivering on their passions, or those women who perhaps have suffered bereavement, have difficult home situations, are juggling motherhood with demanding careers but who – through all their challenges – are motivated, supportive and excelling in their roles.

What is your career highlight, so far?

Most recently, my promotion to Audit Director. This was the culmination of studying for an exam (after not taking an exam in ten years!), an interview panel, and a quality review of my work. After all went well I was then promoted to director. This was a significant milestone in my career and one I am extremely proud to have taken. Prior to that it was the year I spent on secondment to KPMG in the Cayman Islands – where I took on the challenge of new clients, new colleagues and a very different culture and work environment, all while enjoying the year round sunshine and sandy beaches!

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 104 AGENDA
Christina Hall is a Dispute Resolution Partner at BCR Law LLP

What would an average working day look like?

The work in Dispute Resolution is diverse, which means no day is the same. I specialise in trust disputes, construction disputes and personal injury so not only are my cases varied, but my clients range from individuals to big corporations and each will wish to work with me in their own particular way. There is a general misconception that litigation lawyers spend their day in court but my role is to try and avoid Court unless it is absolutely necessary. This means that whilst some days I will spend my day appearing before the Court in trial or making or defending various applications, other days I am in the office, speaking with my clients, providing guidance and advice on their cases or communicating with the lawyer acting for the other party to try and resolve the case and avoid Court intervention.

What attracted you to a career in law and specifically dispute resolution?’

If I am honest, I was probably influenced by programmes such as LA Law and Ally McBeal. The reality of being a lawyer isn’t quite as glamorous as it is on television, but I enjoy the problem-solving aspects, the challenge of ensuring you advance your client’s best case and the sense of achievement and satisfaction when I manage to secure a good result for my client.

What are your most significant milestones in your career so far?

I have been involved in some significant landmark cases that have contributed to Jersey’s jurisprudence and helped develop Jersey’s law. I was also appointed a Crown Advocate in 2015, which was a real honour.

Have you had any female mentors/role models that have helped you in your role?

I have been very lucky to work with bright and inspirational woman during my career but one person who stood out is the retired Solicitor General, Stephanie Nicolle who was the first and only female to be appointed Solicitor General.  I worked with her very briefly when I was starting my career and she was kind and patient but also a formidable lawyer.

What advice would you give woman considering a career in law in Jersey?

The first female Jersey advocate was sworn in on 15th August 1968, which you may think isn’t that long ago. Whilst the number of Jersey qualified female lawyers has increased significantly, females appear to be under represented within Dispute Resolution, particularly at the more senior levels, so it would be great to see more woman excel in this area.  In terms of advice, at BCR we offer legal assistants the chance to experience different areas of law before they decide which area they want to specialise in, so I would encourage anyone who is given this opportunity to do this. Sometimes the area of law you think you will like, is not the one you are actually best suited to.

You recently joined BCR Law, what attracted you to join the firm?

I wanted to be part of a firm which was dynamic and focused on offering its clients a first class service and I have not been disappointed. BCR has established itself as a leading Jersey law firm with a local focus, which naturally appealed to me and I knew I was joining a very experienced team. I feel BCR was a good fit for me, not least because one of my specialist areas is personal injury and clinical negligence, and BCR is the leading firm in this area.

Well Resourced

Helen Borges joined Crestbridge in 2019 to set up and manage a new resourcing function.

Helen offers insights into her job Senior Manager, Resourcing, her achievements and where Crestbridge has supported her career success.

What do you do day-to-day?

I’m so lucky, my job is very varied day-to-day, and I really love that variety! In any one day, I could be interviewing a candidate, holding a briefing with our recruitment partners, discussing offers with potential employees, or working with the business to understand

their wider recruitment needs. I also regularly work on large projects across our business – these can be in our other jurisdictions which is a great way to keep in touch and work closely with colleagues across the Group. My job is non-stop, but I love the challenge!

What is the Hardest bit of your job?

Definitely declining candidates! It’s never fun when you have to tell someone they’ve been unsuccessful, especially when you can see they’ve really tried and want the role. However, I try to make the experience as positive as possible, ensuring they leave with constructive, helpful feedback that can support them going forward and hopefully help them in their next interview.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 106 AGENDA

Is there a female business role model who inspires you, and why?

There are so many amazing women in business, it’s really hard to choose just one. Right now, I think the women that inspire me the most are those who juggle busy working lives whilst also managing home life and dealing with all the other commitments that life involves these days - they are the real inspirations!

Do you have any career highlights?

Definitely being promoted in the most recent round of company promotions! This is fantastic in its own right and something I’m so proud of, but even more so as I’ve just returned from parental leave. I feel so grateful to work in a business where my hard work, planning and commitment is still recognised even though I wasn’t in plain sight. Crestbridge is a business where I can work flexibly around my family and somewhere I feel truly valued.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

There are two things I love about in-house recruitment. The first is that I take so much joy from seeing the individuals that we hire come into the business, how they take hold of their job and the opportunities we offer, and how they go from strength to strength as their career takes off, often leading to promotion. It’s so rewarding! The second is a simple one, but probably my favourite; I just never get tired of telling someone they got the job – absolutely nothing beats it!

What other opportunities have you been able to take advantage of at Crestbridge?

Since joining Crestbridge, I have been given full autonomy to establish the resourcing function across the Group and I’ve loved every minute of it!  Crestbridge is such a supportive business and I’ve so much encouragement and trust from my directors and the senior leadership team. Knowing they’re behind me has given me the confidence to push myself out of my comfort zone and progress professionally – I’m very grateful for this and can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Working at Crestbridge is far more than just a job. We offer opportunity and a bright future, working with some of the best people in their field. You'II be part of our inclusive and friendly culture that values diversity, rewards integrity and emphasises fun.

Walking the talk.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a woman in your industry?

I don’t think there is, nor should there ever be a situation where gender is considered beneficial for the recruitment of a role. What I’ve learnt from academic studies on the subject of gender and leadership is that the styles of leadership of women and men leaders can be quite different. Harvard Business Review wrote a good article on the leadership lessons men could learn from women, citing that women generally would lead through transforming people’s attitudes and beliefs, aligning people with meaning and purpose, using their emotional intelligence [EQ].

How do you approach a leadership role as a woman in business?

‘Walking the talk’ or leading with EQ is certainly how I have conducted myself throughout my career, and it has proven to serve me well. Joining the IQ-EQ business in September 2022, I became responsible for almost 300 people in the Jersey office. How was I to connect with all of my new colleagues in a meaningful, engaged, and authentic way?

My response to this was to communicate in my first week with the business that I would be holding a one-toone with every member of the Jersey team. Most people thought I was crazy, and would never achieve this number

As Managing Director at IQ-EQ Jersey, Nicola Gott is responsible for around 300 colleagues, supporting them in delivering the very best standard of service in trust, corporate and fund administration to over 5000 clients and investors around the globe.

of meetings, but through balancing my day to day work with a number of one-to-one’s a day, I’ve managed to meet everyone and connect. Whilst it has certainly been a huge investment in time, it’s been so worthwhile.

Did you learn anything from getting to know everyone?

I looked to create a safe space for each colleague so they would feel relaxed and take away something positive about our interaction which would create a meaningful relationship. I asked each person what they like about working for IQ-EQ, and also what they might change if they could. I listened to the feedback and have committed to respond to each suggestion with an action.

What is the best bit of your job?

The people in IQ-EQ. We have an amazing network of people all around the world.

And the hardest bit?

Time management – it’s a busy job. I’m also a mum to triplets, and I’m training for the London Marathon in April, plus have an excitable Labrador to entertain. A machine that freezes time for a few hours to reply to emails would be great!

Is there a woman who inspires you in business?

There are many successful women who I admire. Her late majesty Queen Elizabeth was always the woman I would state as being the best role model. In terms of empathetic leadership, as evidenced through lockdown and the COVID pandemic, Jacinda Ardern (former Prime Minister of New Zealand) stands out for me as a leader who is both strong and compassionate in equal measures.

What’s your career highlight, so far?

Over my 15 years in the Channel Islands, I’ve been fortunate to support a number of businesses undertaking operational change and risk remediation. I have met, mentored, and coached a number of superstars, who will know who they are! More importantly, I work in an industry that is constantly evolving, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my new team at IQ-EQ.

At Crestbridge, we prioritise the important things, like excellent rewards and benefits, your wellbeing and work-life balance. lt's our way of empowering you to make your career journey with us.

HEALING & HELPING AT HUMAN HEALTH

What's a typical day for you?

I like to start my day with a routine that allows me to set and maintain my energy for the day ahead. I start with 20-30 minutes of breathwork and meditation followed by some gentle movement to wake myself up and get the blood flowing. I’m never far from a cup of herbal tea, so I’ll drink as many cups as possible (my favourite is vanilla Rooibos) before I’m out on the beach with my dog Babs to catch the sunrise. I’ll then head over to Human Health at either St. Helier or St. Peter and spend the day adjusting our amazing community

I like to wind down after work with a walk and some fresh air. I’ll cook dinner and either listen to music or podcasts and by then I’m ready to get a good night's sleep!

What do you enjoy most?

I moved to Jersey in December, so I’m really enjoying exploring by walking the cliff paths and hopping around the cafes and beaches. I generally enjoy being outdoors in nature with good company and delicious food, even better if all three are combined.  Professionally, I love seeing people reconnect with themselves and

prioritise their health. Witnessing a person's journey from discomfort to wellness and the recognition of their healing potential will never get old to me. An empowered person, able to trust the guidance of their body and living a happier, healthier life because of it, that’s what drives me everyday and I hope that everyone can experience that at some point in their lives.

Do you think it's a benefit to be a female in your industry?

I feel female representation in any industry has a positive impact.

How does chiropractic treatment help women specifically?

Chiropractic can support anyone through the ups and downs that life brings. It supports the body's natural healing ability by keeping the brain to body communication as clear and efficient as possible. This then allows your body and mind to function and thrive at your optimum.

Women benefit from chiropractic, particularly during hormonal transitions such as teenage years, pregnancy and menopause. With the

significant changes a woman experiences in her body during pregnancy, birth and postpartum; Chiropractic can help with pelvic alignment and pelvic floor function, not only to ease any aches and pains but to  also give the baby optimal space and position which helps with general comfort, growth and delivery. After we see Mums-to-be they often experience needing fewer interventions during labour, they feel more relaxed and emotionally prepared for birth.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

I feel it’s going to be a fun filled year with lots of new experiences to be had. In the short term I’m looking forward to establishing my exercise routine by finding a great gym and yoga class. I’m looking forward to getting to know Jersey more and hope to brave the elements by venturing into the ocean and I’m even toying with the idea of surf lessons.  I look forward to working with the Human Health team and meeting the local community, both in the offices and also when we host educational and interactive events throughout the year.

“It was fantastic to meet Ruth, I loved our appointment and we covered so much, I came out feeling truly great. It really caused me to have to think about myself and know that I now need to be putting a focus on my body to ensure it stays working well as I head into my 40s. Ruth was so impressively knowledgeable, she linked together some back, alignment and jaw issues which have been bothering me for years, and started straight away on resolving them with some gentle chiropractic movements. She really is at the forefront of her profession and so many people have confirmed that she is one of the very best in the business. My appointment left me positive and ready to tackle my back and posture issues. I’m delighted to have come across someone so talented and lovely here in Jersey. I couldn’t recommend an appointment with her more highly and have been booking all my family and friends in to see her. It’s amazing that something so simple as booking that appointment will have such a huge, positive change on my life ahead.”

Forging the way.

Rhea’s role has two sides, one being the management of investments, which requires continuous analysis of the markets, and the individual securities and funds that are invested in. Day to day Rhea will be placing trades for the portfolios and working with the team of analysts to provide the best composition for each client.

The other side of her role is relationship management. It is key to understand the financial circumstances and objectives of clients and keep them updated on changes to the portfolios or shifts in the markets. Rhea is therefore conducting daily calls, meetings, and presentations to current and prospective clients. We met up with Rhea to learn more…

The best pieces of advice you've been given?

Do not compare yourself to anyone else. You are individual and therefore you need personal goals with a timeframe suitable for you. I think this has become increasingly important given social media, as it is easy to judge yourself when you see the personal and career achievements of others.

What is the significant milestone in your career so far?

Having my daughter. I had feared that on announcing my pregnancy, my career would disintegrate. In fact, the opposite happened, and I received a promotion when I was pregnant! What has remained constant is my ambition and drive, what has changed is that I have broadened my skillset by being more empathetic and I am quicker at making decisions (I don’t have the time to mull over the trivial details!).

Have you had any female mentors that have helped you?

Not necessarily for my role, but throughout my career I have been lucky to have some fantastic mentors and champions (too many to name, but they should know who they are!). These people haven’t always been formal mentors, but individuals who have taken the extra time to coach me in my role, agreed to meet me for a catch up, or to have a call at a time when I needed it.

I am a great believer in paying things forward and having truly appreciated the time people have given me in the past, so I will make the effort if someone reaches out for a chat.

You have a girls dinner party and can invite any females from any point in time, who would you have and what would you serve?

(Baroness) Helena Morrissey, Sandi Toksvig, Amelia Earhart, my mum, and Jane Fonda. If you count fictional characters, Villanelle would be an interesting guest. I would serve spaghetti alle vongole with an Italian white.

An inspiration

Prior to launching Cassidy Mason Consulting, Cassidy worked across sales and strategy in Jersey, London and Sydney. Following over a decade of working in house, she launched her own consultancy in order to provide that vital overview that is so hard to have when involved in the day to day operations. She talks to us about the ins and outs of running your own company.

Tell us about your business…

When I founded CMC, my goal was to support businesses and keep focussed on achieving objectives. The day to day running of a business can create challenges in staying on track and prioritising tasks and so my aim is to provide that vantage point to help remove the noise, keep momentum and drive efficiency.

Where do you think you got your entrepreneurial spirit from?

My dad is an entrepreneur and whilst it was never something I saw myself doing, the seed of what it was, and that way of working was planted from an early age. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do professionally until after university - I didn’t know that ‘strategy’ was an industry I could work in until a recruitment agency suggested it. When I read that first job description, I knew the industry was the one for me. I have always been a problem solver - I find great satisfaction in reaching an end goal, and finding a path to do that.

What were some of the early lessons you learnt about business and leadership?

After university, I worked in hospitality and found that the best learning experience for leadership. The key lessons I learnt early on was stakeholder management, understanding the customer and client management. Hospitality is all about the importance of the customer and it's the same for strategy - you have to value your customer above all else.

How do you juggle being a mum with being your own boss?

The key thing is communication. Everything comes down to communication - communication with myself, with my family and my clients. One of my biggest commodities is my time - so I am always clear with my clients about how much time I can give them at the offset, communicating what I can do for them and when. I am an efficient worker so it will be rare that I don’t finish a project within the allocated time but I am much stricter with myself when it comes to putting down the laptop and stepping away from it all. Now I have to put the effort in to be present. I have a huge motivator to switch off -time with my son.

What would you say is the best part of your job?

I have created a business doing what I love so it's hard to pick one area I like the most. The best thing is when you see a client have a lightbulb moment as a result of my strategizing. There’s a huge sense of achievement (and relief!) when you see a client understand your strategy and agree with it.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 114 AGENDA

And the hardest part?

Business development comes with its challenges but I think selling my business to potential clients is a role I find hardest. For over 10 years I worked in an operations role so now I am having to work in operations and sales and it's definitely outside my comfort zone!

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

My first contract. I won that in the middle of lockdownwhilst suffering terrible morning sickness- doing my pitch over zoom. I was so happy I won that contract.

Who inspires you?

I’ve learnt so much from so many people that it's hard to pinpoint one role model. I am always learning from those around me and I am constantly inspired by those I work with. Or have worked with.

Always learning

We cultivate learning. Because there are all sorts of ways to develop and grow.

It's why, whatever your role, the opportunities are endless.

Time. Tech. Resources. You'll nd it here. Be extraordinary. Be you.

What’s next for you professionally?

I am looking to expand the team this year which is really exciting and a step closer to where I’d like to see the business grow. I’d love to have a small team with a good roster of clients, whilst still offering the tailored personal service I do today.

Any advice for future female professionals wanting to start their own business?

Resilience - lots of it! And belief in yourself is so important. You have to have confidence in what you're doing. And be prepared to work really, really hard. It’ll be worth it.

Shot on location at Horizon, in an apartment interior designed by one of our creative partnerships, Landes Interiors.

Architect and Interior Design duo Tim and Naemi recently moved to Jersey having spent the last 10 years working on the design of a few Jersey farm houses from London. Their projects are routed in place and centered around the people who use them. Driven by a fascination with making sense of old buildings, Tim and Naemi enjoy introducing new ideas and purpose while sensitively working with the building's fabric.

How did the idea for your business come about and why did you decide to start something together?

Architects and interior designers are a natural match and hugely benefit from working hand in hand, right from the start of a project. Our combined skill set seemed the perfect fit for a Jersey-based practice. So when we were considering a lifestyle-turn-around, moving from London back to Jersey after 20 years, it was easy to imagine a future together, in business!

What are the best things about working together?

To build on a shared vision with the person you most trust and respect is a great thing and without doubt, the ease of communication you have as a partnership because you know each other so well.

Any downsides?

When you are going through a busy patch, you are both busy. Your partner won't be able to fill in for you at home. The trick is to know when work stops, it’s much easier said than done. We’ve been working on it a lot over the years! My advice for couples debating whether to start a business together would be to have a distinct space and time for

work. It inevitably does blur at the edges, and that can be fun, if you love what you do. But it is important to know you can turn out the light and close the door when you need to. Be realistic about each other’s strengths and weaknesses and acknowledge when things shift.

So how do you deal with disagreements?

We make a ‘com-promise’, a 'together-promise'. It doesn't ever feel so bad when you see it like that!

Would you say working together has brought you closer as a couple?

Working together gives us ultimate control over our time. We can make time for each other and our family when we need to. It’s an important part of our values. And, it is powerful to realise that together you can create something that you are both really proud of. We play to our strengths with different roles and responsibilities, but it can be very fluid too. We ask each other questions all the time, get the outside view. Luckily, our skills are very complimentary.

What’s next for your business?

Right now we are working on two multi-generational Jersey homes - one of them is our own, which is exciting. Once we are all settled in, we can turn our attention to the horse stables. They will make a great studio!

Jonathan and Manon Jones, Landes Interiors

Manon started Landes Interiors in 2016 after completing an interior design degree, working from home with the financial support of Jonathan until she built a client base. Three months later a nearby retail space was advertised for rent and presented a unique opportunity to expand the business. Jonathan stepped away from his family business after 33 years to take up the lease and work together with Manon. Having worked together running Jersey Pottery Ceramics, where Manon was the Design Director, they knew they were compatible professionally.

Tell us about your roles in the business?

Jonathan: We knew our boundaries as soon as we started working together. I would be running the admin, dealing with shipping, accounts, and implementation, where Manon would create design schemes, run our projects, guide customers and give interiors advice in the shop. Of course, we consult each other on regular basis, but we both have very different roles.

Manon: Wearing different hats is a necessity in small businesses. Jonathan has a certain affinity with spreadsheets which I have not developed, although he has a great eye for aesthetics, I am the interior designer.

What are the best things about working with each other?

Manon: The travelling is great, at trade shows it feels more like a holiday than work, we also bounce back ideas all the time.

Jonathan: I sometimes have to reel Manon in… she can get very enthusiastic about new sourcing and design, but our home market is not always ready for the next big thing, I’m generally more conservative. If we were not a couple, it would be more delicate to tell her. But the very best thing about being working as husband and wife is being able to celebrate our gradual gains together.

Are there any downsides?

Manon: We are passionate about Landes and have an all-in attitude which means very little time for our personal life. When you both rely on the success of the same business financially, there isn’t a fence between free time and work time. So, when Jonathan storms in the bedroom at 6am with action plans, because he’s already been working for a few hours, I’m not impressed!

Jonathan: I think if you run your own business, it is always hard to switch off!

Manon: We are obviously on holiday together on most occasions and it isn’t ideal to be off island at the same time. I was also worried that our conversations would become mundane if we spent too much time together, but I’m mostly working in the shop on the creative side and customer facing, and Jonathan is at home dealing with imports, deliveries, accounts and admin so we still have plenty to catch up after a day’s work.

Would you say that working together has brought you closer as a couple?

Manon: It has certainly deepened our understanding of each other, I can identify what Jonathan is good at – organisation and figures, what makes him tick – he is very square and honest and expects a reciprocal attitude from everyone.

Jonathan: We’ve also learnt to disagree constructively. Business decisions have to be made rationally rather than emotionally; this has bought a more relaxed approached to our rare personal clashes. We agree to disagree and compromise fast.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 118 AGENDA

Manon: But the best thing is that working together is like working with our biggest fan. We do cheer on each other. It is particularly meaningful when we traverse difficult seasons and fantastic when we have successful designs to celebrate.

So how do you deal with disagreements, when they arise?

Manon: This sounds cliché but our relationship is based on great communication and mutual respect, plus, Jonathan and I have the same work ethic and most importantly the same life goals so we rarely disagree.

Jonathan: For the anecdote, in the main we have the same taste but if we disagree on buying for the shop, we have one “Joker” each at trade shows and we have mini competitions to see which of our “jokers” will sell first.

What advice would you give to couples who are debating whether to start a business together?

Jonathan: It is very easy to get excited about a new venture with your other half but don’t go in both at the same time. Keep a minimum income until the wheel is turning. This will avoid unnecessary financial stress. Build a robust business plan and be prepared to work long hours.

Manon: I’d like to add “complete each other not compete with each other”. Once you’ve found out your strengths and weaknesses work in your area of expertise and let your other half work in theirs.

For couples that are already in business together, what advice would you give them?

Manon: The most important thing is why are you working together in the first place. It’s because you love each other. Don’t take it for granted and let the business get in the way.

So what’s next for your business?

Jonathan: Our biggest challenge is to keep innovating and bringing environmentally friendly furniture to the island, we go a long way to source sustainable products. It’s not just about what it looks like but where does it come from and who made it.

Manon: So we are often trotting around Europe to bring you novelties, we are super excited about this year’s new spring summer collections in outdoor furniture and soft furnishing. We are always up to date with fabric and wallpaper books too. I want people to come in the shop and ask questions about their interiors and browse our books as much as they like. As for projects, we are always on the go. We are currently finishing a beautiful home in North London and tackling three other interior design projects locally.

Jonathan: I’m also brushing up on digital marketing, with a few courses. We need to get a few key messages out there, such as our sustainable sourcing but also we do give free project estimates and you might find that we are a lot more affordable than you think and in the long run we can even save you money.

There is a lot of overlap though, Richard also being very creative…we are interchangeable to an extent and customers often muddle our names up!

Richard: We both work very closely together, and we are both very creative. I am good at coming up with an original concept or idea, but I leave it to Martyn to transform it into a creative campaign. Martyn's strength lies in developing an original concept and then seeing it all the way through to the final artwork stages. I will also focus on strategic objectives to make sure that any creative work does the job it is supposed to do, i.e. "Advertise the right product or service to the right people at the right time." After all, the client wants to see a return on their investment.

What are the best things about working with a friend?

Richard: We can constantly bounce ideas off each other however weird and left centre they are. Some of them are shot down in flames straight away, but some of them get through to the client who runs with our mad creative ideas. One such idea was for a well-known hotel group. To boost publicity to UK residents for a holiday in Jersey, we ran a "Win a Jersey Cow" competition. Don't worry, you didn't actually win a cow, but you won a holiday to visit Jersey and a trip to a local farm to see a Jersey Calf born that year, and you could name it. It was a fantastic success and saw a considerable increase in bookings.

Martyn: We’ve always had a similar sense of humour and shared cryptic jokes that I honestly don’t think anyone else would find remotely funny. We’ve both been on the journey together I guess.

Any downsides?

Martyn: I don’t think there are a lot of downsides. I think we compliment each other and drive things forward when one or other is flagging or less motivated. Taking holidays at the same time is difficult as you can imagine, but we’ve still had a few joint family weekends in France over the years.

Richard: Business and social occasions can merge together when ideally, you want to leave the company business behind.

How do you deal with disagreements?

Martyn: We are both fairly non-confrontational and when either of us does get heated or disagreeable, I think the other generally can see that issue is probably valid. I don’t recall ever falling out or really arguing other than a heated discussion that is always resolved positively.

Richard: Although we do sometimes have a cycle race around St Helier to settle a disagreement, with the winner winning the argument - it's usually Martyn!

What advice would you give to friends who are debating whether to start a business together?

Martyn: Definitely go for it. It might be hard at times, but it’s certainly going to be easier than being in business with someone you don’t get on with.

Richard: Starting a new business is not easy; you never know how the company will go, so you need all the help you can. Working with friends will give you support when you need it, and you will also be there when you need to support your friends.

For friends that are already in business together, what advice would you give them?

Richard: I think the two biggest things are communication between each other and don't forget to leave your egos at home.

Martyn: It’s a bit like a marriage, you need to respect each other, respect each other's opinion, work as a team, be honest and admit your mistakes when you make them and of course you will. Then find a way to work through any issues.

Has working together brought you closer as friends?

Richard: Yes, we are both a similar age, and we had our children at a similar time, so both went through the trials and tribulations of bringing up children whilst running a business. I think it was easier to know that somebody else was in the same situation as you, and when you were off on holiday, you could relax knowing the business was in safe hands and you weren't going to get a phone call.

Martyn: Obviously we’ve got to know each other fairly well over the years, having been in business for so long. We still try and go out together with our wives now and then and we still share a lot of interests, in particular a love of cycling and rugby. In some respects we now share a history, we’ve met a lot of the same people and had the same experiences to reminisce over.

Do you have any rules to stop your work encroaching on your friendship?

Martyn: Never mention rugby if Wales have lost at the weekend!!

Richard: Plenty of coffee breaks, a sense of humour, 15 minutes of talking nonsense at least once a day, discussing rugby and not forgetting Friday afternoon treats!

What’s next for your business?

Martyn: The ever changing face of the creative media world is a challenge in itself and we’re not getting any younger. For me it’s just about maintaining a work-life balance, I think we’ve done the big agency thing and now enjoy being a more manageable sized business. We have some great clients and we’re able to be very hands-on, which suits me perfectly.

Richard: We have learnt that business does not stand still; you must react and realign your business to market forces constantly. We are always on the next project and new venture; it is a rollercoaster ride, but I never get tired or bored working in this environment!

“The one significant advantage of running a business with a friend is that you can deal with those challenges together.”

Opposite Land Productions was established by husband and wife duo Becky and Sam during the Covid pandemic after a family member requested help filming a portfolio of commercial properties for an international client. The films were picked up by other property developers - more film requests were made and before long Opposite Land Productions was born. Three years on, OLP has relocated to Jersey and now specialises in creating captivating video content for every industry wishing to engage with their customer or audience via film.

Tell us about your business, how did it all begin?

Sam: We are a classic lockdown business in that both of us were significantly quieter on the work front during lockdown - I worked for ITV’s This Morning show as a Producer Director and our shoot and production team was effectively grounded by the stay at home measures. Normally I’d be out travelling the country and shooting but we weren’t allowed to operate in lock down which gave me the time and headspace to start thinking of the future.

Becky: I was actually on furlough from my job at Sheerluxe as Deputy Editor at the time when Sam asked me if I wanted to start a business with him. Seeing as I had zero experience in television, or video, or production I can’t say I was particularly keen! But we had a rare opportunity where we had the time to sit and discuss how we could create this new business together - what it might look like, what our roles would be etc. It was always my dream to work for myself - and now I had the opportunity to do it with Sam. I couldn’t say no!

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 122 AGENDA
Becky and Sam Palmano Opposite Land Productions

Do you and your partner have different roles or do you do a lot of work together?

Becky: We each have our strengths, and recognised these early on making sure our roles complemented our skill sets. My previous roles at Harrods and Sheerluxe as Fashion Editor and Deputy Editor consecutively gave me great experience overseeing photo shoots, producing marketing campaigns, writing magazine columns and liaising with brands on their creative visions. This means my role at OLP is more tailored towards client acquisition, communicating our creative briefs to clients and making sure their vision marries with our own and is executed successfully. Sam is super creative too; however his role is much more production-focused. He is the action man and goes on all the shoots, coordinates the crew, captures the content and oversees all post production.

Sam: We used to divide the jobs up as they came in, with Becky overseeing one shoot and me another but over time it’s become much more effective for us to apply our own talents to each project so clients get to interact with us both. I love the creative side of things and love chatting to clients about how we are going to deliver their video but Becky is great at reining me in as I can get a little over excited especially if there are drones involved!

What are the best things about working with your partner?

Sam: The business is both ours and we are both passionate about it and enjoy running it so it becomes less like work and more of a hobby and part of our lives. We can be taking the dogs for a walk and talking about what to have for dinner that night and by the end of the conversation, we are discussing our new marketing strategy to get into the home rental market. We have lost the dogs a few times from getting too deep into the conversation! Another huge advantage is the support. We know each other so well that we can be very direct with each other, when a good idea comes you can discuss it and brainstorm it really well because you are on the same wavelength.

Becky: You have an ever-present cheerleader at work which is pretty amazing! It’s very easy when you're self-employed to be hard on yourself- especially during the quieter periods. Sam and I are like yin and yang and whilst that can create tension every now and again it also means when one is down, the other is usually up.

Any downsides?

Sam: If a project or a pitch hasn’t worked out, it gets to us both and trying to keep positive can be difficult. That said, having Becky there to share the disappointment is incredibly helpful and we always manage to work our way through it.

Becky: I think the positives to working together can also be the negatives- we both get really passionate about our projects so much so that it’s hard to not let them seep into our weekends

or downtime. We’ll often spend date nights discussing the next filming project or client pitch which is not in any way romantic!

What has been the biggest challenge about running a business with your partner?

Sam: Around two months in, we both decided to leave our full-time jobs. We were busy enough and our current roles were interfering with projects to the point we were turning work down. Not long after that we found out that Becky was pregnant. Initially, we were

Becky: Be prepared to work hard. It’s easy to look at working together with rose tinted glasses - but the reality is, if the business fails there’s nowhere to hide! You’ve got to put the graft in to reap the reward and sometimes that means sacrificing your evenings together, your weekends or a trip away with friends. It’s worth it though. There is nothing better than coming up with an idea, and seeing it through to the end. That feeling of accomplishment is so elating - and the fact you’ve done it together is awesome.

terrified about how it was all going to work but over the next 9 months we were both so motivated to make the company work not only for ourselves but for our soon to be son that we worked doubly hard at finding new clients and building the business. The struggle really came when our son was born. Our office was our flat at this stage so it all got a little on top of both of us!

Becky: Having a newborn in your office is not the most productive of environments. It was hard, and a real test of not just our relationship but the business too. I kept thinking, if we can make it through this we can really make it through anything!

How do you deal with disagreements?

Becky: We know each other so well, we can almost sense a disagreement before it happens. Sam is much more patient than I am and is able to listen and discuss ideas with me even if he doesn’t agree with them, meaning we rarely argue. He just diffuses the situation before it gets heightened - a skill I don’t even think he’s aware he has!

What advice would you give to couples who are debating whether to start a business together?

Sam: Don't rush into anything. Start by using your spare time together like weekends or holidays to really begin thinking about the business and brainstorming ideas. If you get a good workflow going, you could well be onto something but if you can't agree on anything it might just be best to leave it before you have committed anything financially. Have a very honest conversation about what happens if it doesn’t work out.

For couples that are already in business together, what advice would you give them?

Sam: When it gets tough, remember why you decided to do it together in the first place and not with anyone else. Communication is also a key skill for working together. I’ll often only ever explain half of an idea to Becky expecting her to fill in the other half - it drives her mad and is probably the only time we properly argue.

How do you separate your relationship from work and at home?

Sam: We don't really, we love what we do so we will always be talking about the company and upcoming projects, next steps to grow the company etc. That said, once we have made a decision on anything work-related we don't dwell, we move on and enjoy talking about other things.

Becky: It is definitely hard to put a stop to work chat after working hours. Especially when we have a really exciting project underway. Having a kid helps - he’s a constant source of amusement to Sam and I, and he provides plenty to talk about!

What’s next for your business?

Sam: An app! I can't say too much about it as we are still very early in the development stage, but it’s fantastic to be working on it with Becky. As is always the case, I can get overly enthusiastic and Becky has a great way of asking the right questions to keep me and the direction of the app development in check. Having only recently moved back to Jersey we are also looking to build our client base over here and grow our OLP filming business. It’s going to be an exciting year! oppositelandproductions.com

The Human Health team are celebrating the opening of their second location at 16 Charing Cross. Started in 2016 by Tom Faulkner, clients have been heading out to St Peter’s to benefit from the brilliant chiropractic, craniopathy and functional health care on offer.

This additional St Helier location will be great for all their east based clients as well as many of their dedicated corporate clients who can now easily see them before, during or after work. ‘While we already work with a lot of people in the corporate sector, we realised that a town address would make it much easier for individuals and businesses based in St Helier to work with us,’ Tom said. ‘In the UK in 2021, more than 150 million working days were lost through ill health, with the average person having six days off sick during the year. Of those absences, 30% related to musculoskeletal conditions. These statistics highlight the importance of looking after ourselves and giving people access to hands-on care.’

Grandeur GRANITE

Space, privacy and location are surely the most requested requirements for any family searching for their forever home. La Vielle Fontaine has these qualities in abundance. From the five well appointed bedrooms to the superb walk-in dressing room, the vast kitchen / family room to the spacious gym and swimming pool, all set within three vergees of its own private land - this house has space (and privacy) in spades. Whilst you might think this amount of space would comprise location, La Vielle Fontaine has other ideas.

LIFE & STYLE IN JERSEY 128
Words: Becky Palmano

The rural position benefits from great walks thanks to its proximity to the coastal paths at Grosnez and the racecourse as well as the rolling dunes and sandy beach of St Ouen’s Bay. Perfect for a family of active children or parents wanting to spend plenty of time outdoors.

Yet despite all of this countryside tranquility, the property is still within a short distance of village shops and amenities, with La Moye Golf course and the airport only ten minutes away meaning you can dip your toe into civilization as conveniently as you can hunker down and get away from it all. Most importantly for any family the local primary schools have an excellent reputation plus there are superb private preparatory and secondary schools within a short drive.

First impressions certainly count and entry to Vielle Fontaine is via a bespoke electric wooden gate into an impressive courtyard with parking for approximately 10 cars along with a double garage. Ample space for when you invite friends and family over, which you’ll certainly want to do, given the generous entertaining and living spaces. Not to mention the spacious outdoor area - a perfect party patio.

The ground floor has plenty of south facing windows which flood the well laid out living areas with sunlight. A large lounge which features a magnificent 14th century granite fireplace equipped with a wood burner ideal for winter months sits beside an additional reception room. This is currently used as a games room but the room's simple and roomy dimensions make it a perfect blank canvas for the next homeowners, a home office perhaps. There is a large utility and boot room, a must-have for any family home and a downstairs shower room and separate cloakroom.

The hero and heart of the ground floor is undoubtedly the enormous open kitchen family room with dining area and snug. Complete with a large modern range cooker, the kitchen area is tastefully finished in a modern airy style with large ungainly appliances hidden behind country style cupboards. It is easy to imagine lazy weekend mornings spent in this room, the snug fire lit and the kids camped at the breakfast bar amongst mounds of tea and toast.

Despite its generous size, this impressive family home really does feel like a, well, a home. This is reflected in the good flow upstairs. The first floor has four bedroom suites, all of which were recently renovated yet they still cleverley capture the charm of

the original farmhouse. Whether this is through a granite fireplace or an eaved ceiling, the rooms tread the line perfectly between rustic and modern. The bathrooms too appear to have been recently redone so will not need updating for a while. The enormous principal bedroom has a superb walk in dressing room leading to the equally as large ensuite bathroom. There is also another room off the principle suite currently used as a sewing room but this could be used as a playroom or morning room with a staircase down to the family room. The fifth bedroom suite is on the 2nd floor making it perfect for guests or teenagers.

Outside there is a stable that has been turned into a fully insulated fitted office, a professionally fitted gym, garden store, bike store and wood stores. The swimming pool and entertainment courtyard face south and have been designed with raised planters for minimal maintenance. It’s the perfect sun trap and easy to imagine hot summer days spent enjoying a BBQ with friends. There is a large flat garden lawn, veggie

INTERIORS TRENDS 2023 PART ONE.

Jersey’s covid care might have wound down but it seems we will be perpetually discussing the pandemics influence on our lifestyles, and 2023 is no different. This season’s home trends are a direct result of all those things we wished we had when we were locked down in our living rooms. Joyful colour abounds headrests and sofa sets, and comforting fabrics like boucle and sink-in shearling would have made the stay-at-home message much easier to endure. From seventies inspired shapes harking back to a simpler time to interiors influenced by what’s on our screens (read on for more) these are the five trends influencing our interiors this season…

Dopamine Decor

In other words, decorating your home to make you feel happier. For the brave this might mean a whole room painted in the brightest of hues, or even investing in a beautifully bright sofa set. For those only wanting to dip their toe in the colour pool, try injecting some brights through accessories like a lamp, or a rug.

Modern Mediterranean

If you haven’t watched the much talked about TV series The White Lotus you’d be forgiven for not understanding the noise around the locations. Season 2 in particular provides much to discuss when it comes to interiors. Set in the Sicilien hills, the programme's characters are often overshadowed by the wow decor of their incredible setting which has all the glamour of old school mediterranean interiors but has been given a twist of the contemporary. Think bold stripes, extravagant marble surfaces, jaw dropping light fittings and beautifully hand painted ceramic vases. These are the pieces we’re

Earth Tones

Terracotta, once a material reserved for plant pots, has become the colour of the season. Best teamed with other earthy tones like sand, pale stone, deep olive, and light clay it’s a colour palette that’ll look lovely come summer. A great way to introduce the trend is across your tableware- look out for linen napkins and tablecloths in toffee brown or even a lighter caramel. When styled with white serveware and a vase of fresh rosemary and eucalyptus you’ll be bang on trend.

HERE’S GALLERY’S GUIDE ON WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR WORKOUT

With every new year comes a new wave of fitness frenzy - self confessed over indulgers hell bent on winding back the endless mince pies and tins upon tins of Quality Streets. And whilst we don’t disagree with fitness resolutions and aspirations of five gym classes a week, we believe healthy living should be a year long affair rather than something clutched at in the first months of the year but quickly forgotten by Easter. So if you’re in the camp of long term fitness doers, here are our picks on what to wear for your workout. From pilates to pushups and post-class smoothies, these are the gym garms to buy now.

BJÖRN BORG

Shortly after retiring from his successful tennis career, Björn Borg transitioned from sportsman to fashion designer creating a clothing collection focused on tech fabrics that are as eye-catching as his tennis records. Often coined as a rock’n’roll star draped in tennis clothes, it’s no surprise that Björn’s collection is great. Think retro-inspired patterns and colours applied to modern fits. Take the Borg Crop tank, the navy and white stripes are reminiscent of the American varsity style clothing Borg wore on court in the 1970s but its been modernised with a handy phone pocket designed into the racerback.

Prices of pieces pictured:

Borg crop tank blue - £30

Loose tank grey- £30

Seemless crop top black- £33 High waist swipe tights - £41

VARLEY

Varley is the cool girl brand when it comes to fashion fitness. Think contemporary and chic activewear you could get away with wearing outside of gym hours. The current collection hits all the right fashion notes in this season's colour palette of cream, caramel and chocolate brown. Pick up a muted animal print crop top and team with a heavy cable knit sweater, the perfect after class layer.

Prices of pieces pictured:

Ellis Reversible Gilet- £143.00

Mentone Knit- £107.00

Always Surrey Bra- £45.00

Let’s Go Super High Rise 25 Leggings£80.00

Foster Quilt Jacket- £179.00 (main image)

SWEATY BETTY

The brand's biggest marketing message is to empower women through fitnesswhat’s not to love about that. One of the first UK fitness brands to produce plus size clothing for curvy gym-goers, Sweaty Betty's most sold product is their Power Leggings, with one pair sold every 60 seconds. Get your hands on a pair, or for something a bit snazzier take a gander at the huge range of colours and patterned bottoms on offer in Voisins now. We love the navy sparkling seamless gym leggings, which come with a matching crop top and would look great with the Pathfinder Jacket.

Prices of pieces pictured:

Spark Seamless 7/8 Gym Leggings- £68

Foundation Seamless Padded Yoga Bra- £36

Super Soft Strappy Back Workout Vest- £50

Pathfinder Packable Jacket- £140

UNDER ARMOUR

Founded in the late 1990’s, Under Armour was initially focused on engineering underlayers that would help keep athletes cool and dry during their sporting endeavors. Fast forward 20 odd years and the tech behind those underlayers remains but the collection has expanded to include everything you’d need to wear to workout. Technicality meets trendy for this season's collection, with neon shades of orange and pink slashing across shorts and tees. There’s plenty of black and navy on offer too for those wanting something a little less loud.

Prices of pieces pictured: Compression bike shorts- £30.60

Pink tee- £20.70

Crop top- £27.00

Play Up Shorts 3.0 (pink)- £19.80

FOR THE LOVE OF SPORT

Chris and Laura Riley met in America, but now back in Jersey, happy married couple with two children. Our roving sports reporter, Daniel Andrade caught up with them about how important sport is in their relationship as both work for Jersey Sport and involved with the same football club in St Lawrence FC.

Where did two of you meet?

We met in America, I had been living in Chicago, Illinois for the past 3 years working as a football coach at a Club and Laura had just arrived to work for the same company.  The entire group of coaches (44 boys and Laura) went out for some team bonding, and we hit it off straight away. We worked for the same company but lived an hour apart so there was a lot of driving back and forth, but we made it work. We moved back to Jersey together at the end of 2015 and here we are today, married with 2 children.

How important is sport in both your lives?

Sport has been a key part in both our lives since we were very little. Both our parents are sport mad too, so I think it’s a just a family thing. Chris came from a rugby background, with his dad, uncle and grandad being coaches, so Chris was a waterboy and cone collector from a toddler. He played football at semi pro level before getting injured so moved into coaching from there. I have an older brother, so I was always outside playing football and any other sports we could. Sport is just part of our lives. I used to play sport competitively, but since having children, its more about being around my friends and having fun which I feel is just as important. Our children are now taking part in a variety of sports clubs so it’s all about them.

Do you enjoy both working at Jersey Sport together?

Yes, we don’t let it bother us to be honest. We worked together in America, so it isn’t the first time. We both manage different areas but are part of the same larger team. We just get on with it, a lot of our outcomes are the same and we work well together.

You also both are part of St Lawrence FC – is it good you share the same passion in football? (Laura)

Yes, I think it is a good thing, we both understand each other’s roles within St Lawrence FC and work together on various aspects. It makes it a lot easier as we are both on the same page.

Who’s the most competitive when it comes to Sport?

That’s a hard one as we are both competitive, but I think probably me.

How much are you looking forward to seeing your kids grow up in sport too?

We are lucky because both children have taken an interest in Sporting activity. Hudson is three now and is absolutely obsessed with football (and any other sport to be honest) but we always wanted it to be their choice, we would never force our children to do sport if they didn’t want too, but luckily they both seem really interested right now, so if that does continue then we can't wait to be the crazy supportive parents cheering from the side in the future.

MULTIPLE PARTNERS

The dancers of Ballet d’Jèrri, Jersey’s startup professional dance company, have arrived on the island from Copenhagen, London, Singapore, Germany, Poland, Dublin, Chile (and one apprentice from Jersey) to put Jersey on the map of the world of contemporary dance. From left to right, Miriam Oliver, Ohad Caspi, Elsa Le Breton, Donovan Delis McCarthy, Anna Daly, Hanna Szychowicz, Reece Hudson, Ombline Noyer and Kamal Singh comprise Jersey’s cuttingedge company.

Miriam

17-year-old Jersey dancer Miriam Oliver has previously called the opportunity to be an apprentice alongside professional dancers in a professional company “a golden ticket.” She says that it’s “a nice change going from after-school training to full day training, but it can be exhausting. The stamina you need is immense. The movement quality is so precise, and there is a lot of mindwork.” She is treated as a part of the company, and she is looking forward to learning from the varied and talented individuals surrounding her.

Ohad

Ohad Caspi loves Jersey. “It’s such an adventure being here. The mix between being so close to nature and doing my art. Living by the sea,” he says. He finds it very different than working in Germany and Austria where

he formerly danced. The idea of being a part of a new company is very appealing to Ohad. “We came here as individuals, but everyone who took the ride came here knowing that we are building this thing together. We are here to establish something.”

Elsa

French dancer Elsa Le Breton loves that of Ballet d’Jèrri are starting something new. “Everyone is in the same boat,” she says, “and it’ so nice, and so unique to be the part of the beginning of a new company. It’s going to be lovely to look back in a few years.” Elsa previously danced with the National Ballet of Ireland. Though she is from the South of France, her father’s family comes from Normandy, and she’s topographically closer to them now in Jersey than she was in Marseille, France.

Donovan

Donovan Delis McCarthy performed in Copenhagen and Paris before being selected to dance for Ballet d’Jèrri. Donovan says about the move to Jersey, “I am half English and half French, so I feel like Jersey is perfect for me. Before I came here, I had a good feeling about the island.” He also adds that he had great feeling about Carolyn Rose Ramsay, and he was enthusiastic about coming to work with her.

Anna

Anna Daly, from Southwest London, says having a female who is the director of a ballet company is inspiring. Ballet d’Jèrri artistic director Carolyn Rose Ramsay, Anna says, “is a role model to me.” She adds, “That’s why we are so on board, because of what she’s made. We have a responsibility to push it to make sure it lasts.” She seconds Ohad’s sentiments about Jersey. “In a city,” she says, “everything feels like it’s constantly on the go and like you are always working because it weaves into everything you do, but here, you can finish dancing and breathe, take a break.”

Hanna

Since her arrival from Poland, Hanna Szychowicz has been enjoying our Jersey climate. “It’s beautiful here,” she says, “but the weather is crazy. Sunny, rainbow and dreamy then seconds later, it’s hailing and wild storms.” Also a model, yoga teacher and “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist, Hanna’s social media following is about one quarter the population of Jersey.

Reece

Before coming to Jersey, Reece Hudson lived and worked in Asia. “After dancing in Singapore,” he says, “I was excited to be closer to Bucks” (his home in Buckinghamshire). He says that he is excited by the small size of the group at Ballet d’Jèrri. “Many other companies treat you like a mannequin—you’re interchangeable, but Carolyn made me feel like an actual person.”

Ombline

Ombline Noyer has lived all over the world, including a length of time in Cyprus, so she says, “I know what it is to live on an island,” and she’s found a lot of Cypriot connections here. The range of pieces that the company is learning with Ballet d’Jèrri vary from traditional to contemporary, and Ombline is excited about working with three different choreographers. Of the contemporary piece they are currently working on, she says, “It goes to the floor! It’s animalistic.”

Kamal

Kamal Singh calls Jersey “very welcoming” even though “we have to carry umbrellas.” Kamal is from New Delhi, and he studied in London at the English National Ballet School but calls his successful audition at Ballet d’Jèrri “a dream come true.” He’s thrilled about the challenges of the “dynamic and expressive” pieces that Carolyn has chosen, and he hopes that Ballet d’Jèrri will find the support that it needs to continue.
