We acknowledge and embrace the fact that our community is changing as more people move into the area and that they are passionate about contributing to it. We have leadership who is truly vested locally and able to establish a sound, robust framework that guides expansion and, more importantly, is adopted by the community. Lastly, it includes us, the community, who have a real passion for the Midlands and don’t want to see it fundamentally change. I may oversimplify it, but if you’ve got the macros sorted out then the micros should be easier to manage, right?

IN-HOUSE JOURNALISTS

It was good to grab a coffee this week with one of the top contributors to our magazine, and good friend, Tim Johnson. We chatted about several evolving and developing communities we work with or are involved in. The discussion got me thinking about how, at FabMags, I’ve watched some communities start to burn bright and then taper off while others have continued to shine year after year.

There is no question in my mind that the Midlands is one of those communities that is burning brighter every year. While this is great news (and we love great news!), it also presents a challenge as we’d like the growth to be both sustainable and well-managed. I know that’s easier said than done, however, we don’t want to see what is the essence of the Midlands eroded over time but rather adopted as the foundational element in its ongoing growth.

How do we know if we’re doing it right? That’s a tough question to answer but if I had to take a stab at it I think we’re doing most of it right in these areas.

What I know is that we love that our magazine plays a part in it all. Telling stories that keep the history and legacy of the Midlands alive while also sharing the new things that are happening and shaping our way forward. It’s always been our passion to tell stories that connect us all and record the amazing people, places and projects happening all around us.

Speaking of coffee and storytelling, I hope you enjoy our latest edition. We cannot thank you enough for supporting and contributing to The Midlands Magazine and hope you’ll continue to do so as we tell your stories.

God bless.

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM BURNOUT?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress. It can affect people in various professions and life circumstances and can be caused by ongoing stressful situations, such as a demanding job, financial stress or relationship problems. Unlike acute stress, which is a normal response to a short-term stressor, this can have negative impacts on your physical and mental health if left unaddressed.

Research has suggested that women tend to experience burnout more frequently than men. There are several reasons for this:

1. Women tend to take on more work and responsibilities, both at work and at home. This can lead to an overwhelming workload.

2. Women often face discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

3. They may be less likely to receive support from their partners, colleagues and employers, which can make it more difficult to manage the stressors.

4. Women are often expected to be caregivers and may feel pressure to balance work and family responsibilities.

5. Hormonal changes throughout menstrual cycles and during pregnancy can also increase susceptibility to burnout.

It's important to recognise that burnout is not caused by a weakness or failure, but rather by a combination of internal and external stressors. It's also important to acknowledge that it can affect anyone, regardless of gender, and that seeking support and self-care strategies can be effective in managing and preventing it.

Here are my tips to help women avoid burnout:

1. It's important to set clear boundaries. This can include creating a schedule that allows for time to relax.

2. Engage in activities that help you recharge, such as exercise or spending time with loved ones.

3. It's important to have a support system in place, whether it's friends, family, colleagues or professional support.

4. Learn to say no to additional responsibilities or commitments if they are causing excessive stress or overwhelm.

5. Taking short breaks throughout the day can help to reduce stress and increase productivity. This can include taking a walk, stretching, or simply taking a few deep breaths.

6. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can reduce stress and increase resilience.

7. If workplace stressors are contributing to burnout, it may be helpful to address them directly. You can do this by speaking with a supervisor, seeking additional resources or support, or reevaluating job responsibilities.

Remember, it's important to prioritise your wellbeing. By recognising the signs of burnout and implementing self-care strategies, you can protect your mental, emotional, and physical health.

The annual Hilton Arts Festival will be held at Hilton College, just outside Pietermaritzburg, from 11 to 13 August 2023. Now in its 31st year, it is the largest festival in KZN and one of the leading festivals in SA. This year’s event will take place five weeks earlier than usual, which organisers hope will result in better weather. “Our aim is to bring the pick of SA theatre to KZN over the weekend,” says artistic director Sue Clarence. “It isn’t simply a drama festival. There are dollops of comedy, music of several different genres, an extensive fine art exhibition, exciting arts-related workshops, fun activities for kids, upmarket craft, and a collection of classic cars - from a vintage Rolls Royce to

modern Ferraris. There is live music, street theatre, and a wide variety of food on sale. Naturally, there is a beer tent as well!”

Lovers of theatre must make sure to book for the shows they want to see: Hansard, starring Fiona Ramsay and Graham Hopkins, which according to one reviewer “is the best piece of theatre to be seen in a decade”, along with other performances. The comedy line-up includes The Mambas with John van de Ruit and Ben Voss, the irrepressible Macbob duo, Aaron and Lisa McIlroy, and many more. From Cape Town, Aldo Brincat brings The Moon Looks Delicious From Here, about a young immigrant boy growing up in the 60s and My

Weight and Why I Carry It, a no-holds-barred look at the pertinent issue of body image. Brendon Peel, internationally renowned magician and winner of Britain’s Got Talent, jets in with two bags of illusion and mindbending tricks – Impossible and Shenanigans of the Mind

The music component of the festival has been expanded due to the stunning new facilities at the school. People can grab the opportunity to Be A Pop Star and have the experience of recording their own voice or they can Lay Down a Beat, working with cutting-edge software to create music. Ticketed music shows offer a wide variety of choices.

That’s Life, with Midlands favourite Erin Fourie, includes a wide variety of songs from Sinatra, Beyonce and Adele to Ella, Etta and Amy Winehouse.

The international birding company, Rockjumper’s exhibition, lectures, guided walks and drives on the estate offer an opportunity to enjoy the magnificent Midlands and Ed Schroeder will speak on another KZN jewel, through his photographic book on Nguni cattle. SA-made films It Has to Do with Emila and the Best of 48 Hour Film 2022, will be screened.

The 48-hour group will also make a movie at the festival over the weekend. KZN’s Greig Coetzee has given permission for the movie he made during the lockdown in London, The Water Rats, to enjoy its African premiere at the 2023 Hilton Arts Festival.

And for the very first time, Retro Rides Revival is coming! Attendees can expect to see beautifully restored vehicles and rare models from some of the world's most renowned manufacturers.

Entrance for the weekend is a once-off cost of R100, valid for three days.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

I went to boarding school in the Midlands and then started my first job at Brookdale Health Hydro in 2000. I am now living on our poultry farm in the Midlands with my husband, Keyan, and our three beautiful daughters - so I haven't ventured far! I love farm life, trail running, cooking and creating anything beautiful and purposeful. Living right next to Piggly Wiggly made it the perfect location to open Freerange Interiors & Clothing. We design and locally manufacture our ladies clothing range made up of classic clothing in quality, natural fabrics. We do limited quantities and provide once-off ranges, seldom to be repeated,

offering our customers an exclusive purchase. Our interiors are sourced from all over South Africa and abroad, focusing on unique, carefully selected pieces people have come to love from Freerange.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS?

In 2012, I opened Freerange Interiors & Clothing. It started out with an idea to provide a small range of quality ladies' clothing in neutral palates and natural fabrics that customers could build their personal style on. We have now grown to include some of our own fabric prints, bigger ranges and lots more variety including our home interiors, some of which we now

commission local artisans to manufacture exclusively for us.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS?

I absolutely thrive on the creative aspect of my shop and brand - I never stop designing! I am always challenging myself with my most important aspects which are quality, exclusivity, affordability and trends to appeal to my wide range of loyal customers.

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR IN THE MIDLANDS AREA?

My biggest challenge is familiar to us all at the moment and that is manufacturing locally with the interruptions of load shedding.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?

To be consistent in what your brand stands for. Don't be influenced by what’s going on around you - stick to what you do and do it well.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Trust your instincts and take the leap. There are no guarantees or shortcuts, but if you have an original offering, believe in yourself, and be prepared to keep re-inventing your ideas and brand to keep it exciting and fresh. It can only work!

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

I grew up in the township of Sobantu Village in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZuluNatal, and graduated with an MBA from the University of Natal, and now run The Living Collective (TLC), which is a fullservice, self-catering accommodation rental company offering guests the option of short or long-stay accommodation, furnished or unfurnished apartments, with the added value of an in-house car rental service. Our collection of homes and apartment options has been sensibly designed to provide guests with the perfect combination of convenience and luxury.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS?

The idea to start the company came when my family and I relocated from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 2017. The house we were building in Pietermaritzburg was still under construction and we had already sold the property in Durban. We faced several challenges trying to find accommodation in Pietermaritzburg that could cater to our short-term lease needs and was fully furnished. This presented the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap in the market by providing a hotel alternative with the same standards but with the space and comfort of a home at a fraction of the costs. TLC was born in 2018.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS?

My love for property and decor and interacting with people!

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR IN THE MIDLANDS AREA?

It’s not easy to be a black female in this industry. There are issues of collaboration that can be difficult due to the space we operate in as well as resistance we get over the type of business we provide. However, we have managed to deal with these challenges and continue to do what we do best, which is to offer a service that is loved and appreciated by a lot of our clients.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?

The buying process was more complicated

than I anticipated. I also underestimated the amount of work that goes into maintaining a property. I learnt the importance of focusing on marketing your business no matter how much you may think your brand is out there.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

In the words of Robert Kiyosaki, real estate investing remains the tried and true means of building individual wealth and cash flow. You don’t need to invest where you would stay but where there is a demand for rentals. Market, market, and do more marketing. Love what you do so you are able to withstand the hard times, as there will be difficult moments in your journey.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

I have lived most of my life on a farm and grew up on Benvie Farm as a child. I am the fourth generation to be looking after a property that is 770 hectares with commercial timber, a small sawmill, and a wonderful 30-hectare garden planted by my great-grandfather John Geekie after he bought the farm in 1883.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS?

I had never been involved in running a timber farm before taking over Benvie. When my father died 25 years ago, I was the only one of three sisters who could come back to the farm and continue the family heritage. Once I got here, I also decided to open a small sawmill (a facility where logs are cut into lumber) to mill and add value to the saw log timbers which have been nurtured for many years on the farm. With the help of many people and supportive staff, I have been able to achieve what I started out to do in 1997.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS?

I love what I do as well as the freedom of working outdoors, enjoying the bird life around

me, and seeing the rewards of hard work taking shape. I get out of bed with the first call of the fish eagle that nests in the garden and have all day to be involved in something I cherish. I am lucky that Benvie Garden attracts wonderful people who have all added quality to my life. That this garden still inspires and offers a place of peace to one’s soul is very rewarding.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?

Key lessons I have learnt being part of Benvie is that I believe in working as a team with my staff and careful daily planning when running the farm through various seasons, which helps me achieve my goals.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

My challenge has been being responsible for the preservation of the farm. Being a female has not been a problem for me, as women can achieve whatever they want to by being positive in their choice of life. We have one chance to go out and do what we are passionate about, so I feel it is not worth hesitating if one gets the opportunity.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

Indigo Fields Farmhouse and Spa is a unique holistic offering of a spa retreat for our guests whilst they enjoy all the luxuries of a boutique farm stay. My husband, Paul, and I have loved establishing a family business together, having enjoyed the support of three generations.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS?

We packed up our home in Johannesburg and moved to the Midlands at the end of 2003 with a dream to earn a living from a farm. It wasn’t long before Paul’s parents and my mom joined us, so we extended our offering to include an art gallery and a small coffee shop. We opened our doors to the “Midlands Meanderers” with optimism, but our enthusiasm wasn’t enough. We needed to create a place to attract guests throughout the week. So, we began the African Day Spa. We realised we had something quite special and added to our accommodation so that we could offer the all-inclusive holistic experience: spa treatments, accommodation and meals.

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR IN THE MIDLANDS AREA?

The challenges we face as women are precisely those that come from the joy of being women - being partners, wives, caregivers and moms, torn between business and personal responsibilities, and finding time to do each role well and not compromise yourself in the process! I was blessed to have both grannies

to help out in the business and with our children. Now, Kate, my daughter, has me to hustle around my grandkids when needed.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS?

I absolutely love the farm, the business, and working together with family. It has impacted so positively on so many lives, not just our own. We have an incredibly loyal staff that has pulled out all the stops. It’s not always easy and we continue to learn and grow, sometimes making many mistakes along the way.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?

It’s not all about you! When you have a ‘staff-intensive business’, it’s all about the team. They carry the vision, the ethos and your dream into the guest experience. We struggled to uphold the “hospitality”

norm - staying open seven days a week and during big holidays and school holidays. The best decision we made was to close on Sundays and Mondays, over Easter and Christmas, and for some of the school holidays. Women have something valuable to bring to the table. Our awareness and compassion towards others are needed to complement the hard-core rules of running a profit-driven business.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Don’t be scared to challenge the norm. It's only when you are prepared to break out of the box that you will create that uniqueness that becomes your degree of difference, leverage, or trademark. Engage all the help you can get, especially your family. They have your back, will work as hard as you or even harder, and will be there when you need to step back.

A New Kind of Yum

Market Originator Matt Hogarty takes us behind the scenes of The Midlands Market. We learn a bit about why it was started and meet some of the vendors who make it so special.

24 | WWW.THEMIDLANDSMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

Afew years ago, many people from our part of the world didn’t know how to pronounce the word “poke” [poh-kay] nor had they taken the risk of tucking into this Hawaiian delicacy - a bowl of raw marinated seafood expertly layered with steamed rice, cut veggies, greens, sesame seeds and delicious sauces. Even if you find yourself turning up your nose at the global food trends, it is evident that we are spoilt for choice right here in the KZN Midlands.

With some of the leading producers of craft beers, hand-crafted cheeses, signature wines and baked goods calling the

Midlands home, it was only a matter of time before someone took the step to put this tantalising culinary repertoire on display for the world to taste. Armed with a firm belief that good food needs to be shared, The Midlands Market was launched in October 2022 to share the best of the Midlands food and beverage offering.

Right from the start, the concept of a food market that had its bearings in the ‘handcrafted by locals’ mantra was a hit. This was proved with attendance peaking at 4000 people. This means that after just four markets, with an average spend of R130 per person at each market, nearly half a million

rand in revenue is being injected into our local economy.

Our bigger aim was to add to the mounting aspirations of many locals to make our home a destination of choice for tourists and investors, positively contributing towards economic growth in the region. We are hoping that when travellers decide to plan their getaways, events like these will add to the list of reasons to travel here.

The market has an equally important goal of using this platform to develop local entrepreneurs in the food scene. With 22% of vendors being first-time entrepreneurs, this

space is proving to be a great incubator for new foodie ventures.

Without further ado, let’s meet a few of the local vendors who contribute to the incredible cuisine found at The Midlands Market…

Known for coffee that sings with your soul and its delicious baked treats and light meals, Legacy Coffee Co is a regular vendor at the market. It was born with the mission and vision of “purchase with a purpose”. The kitchen runs on a Midlandsfirst supply policy, using only the finest locally sourced ingredients. Legacy is also a social-entrepreneurship enterprise that provides valuable work experience and skills transfer for graduates of the Love Howick and Meta Consulting Hospitality and Entrepreneurial courses.

N-Squared Bakery was started almost three years ago during COVID when there was no other bakery in the Midlands area. They produce top-quality food at affordable prices with ingredients from local farmers and producers. The Midlands Market's professional approach was the perfect platform to showcase their

products alongside like-minded vendors. They offer visitors a tantalising array of freshly baked goodies from artisanal bread and sourdough pizza bases to decadent pastries and handmade doughnuts.

Bringing authentic flavours, The Indian Cuisine offers home-cooked dishes using tried and trusted family recipes and lots of spices. Therusha explains that there were not many great Indian food spots in the Midlands, so she decided to start her own, fuelled by her passion for delicious, homemade food with bold tastes. What makes The Indian Cuisine unique is that they use the whole palate of flavours - spicy, sour, sweet and hot all at the same time! “It’s a complete world of taste,” says Therusha.

Sakki-Me Sushi is a mobile “business in a box” offering the freshest sushi and platters to treat yourself or for functions. After losing his job during COVID, Sakhile used his 16 years of experience in hospitality to introduce this popular food to the market, making it more accessible to locals. Sakhile chose the Midlands because he believes there are more growth opportunities here than in most places. “It’s the place to be!”

Markets like these have an irresistible charm that transports one back to the old days of trading stores and local bakeries. The Midlands Market seeks to preserve age-old recipes, showcase artisan practices, and provide an opportunity to bring a community face-to-face to enjoy out-of-thisworld food under open skies.

Health Alive

WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

Meet a family who is wholeheartedly aligned with health from the inside out and has owned and run Herba Farmacy - Natural Healing in Howick for almost a decade. The Campher and Gouws family is committed to raising awareness around health and well-being through the modality of natural remedies. The values and ideals of healthy living were instilled into Desiree Campher and her brother, Anthony Gouws, by their mom, Kathe Gouws, from a young age. Kathe was always involved in the health industry, applying it to her family’s life. She practised reflexology for almost her entire life and owned a health shop in Malvern where she offered health consultations.

Herba Farmacy - Natural Healing was originally founded by Shelley Keith, who was inspired by the work of Dr Hulda Clark and her story of recovery from illness using natural remedies. Shelley also approved and helped formulate the business’s products. Having prior knowledge of Dr Clark’s protocols, Kathe and Desiree were

over the moon after they purchased the business in 2013. They wanted a familyowned business that would supply not only the local community, but Africa, with natural healing remedies. Kathe does the administrative work for the business and Anthony helps with the buying, costing, and running of the laboratory where natural remedy products are manufactured. Desiree manages the mainframe business in consultations, health guidance, their e-commerce website and the formulation of the natural remedies. Holistic health has always been like second nature for Desiree. She has an extensive educational background, having studied not only law and draughting, but also aromatherapy. “The only truthful joy is healing and assisting people to recover their full energetics,” she says.

Herba Farmacy - Natural Healing is primarily a manufacturing facility that produces natural remedies and specialises in Clark Detox methods. They offer a wide range of products suitable for all illnesses. Their remedies have aided healing and relief of a variety of ailments and illnesses, including

those with HIV, cancer, arthritis, and heart conditions. While the family’s speciality is in detox programmes, Desiree consults and deals with all types of illnesses. Since the family’s approach is a holistic one, they work within the understanding that everything is connected, and natural remedies are viewed as the “first step instead of a last step”.

Desiree shares that, as a society, we are on the brink of losing the choice between natural versus synthetic. “It’s important to awaken the communities countrywide to demand that natural remain relevant. We are working on a project that will allow the people to choose natural with vitamins and nutrients, but we need the public to support it.” It is the family’s dream for all health shops nationally to stock their products and make them more readily available to the public. They are passionate about educating as many people as they can in the ancient art of herbology and for families to find the value of herbs in their lives.

We start with Lucky. He is a lover of local landscapes and has found his path in life as a photographer. After he received an opportunity at CC Systems in Howick in 2012 and developed a knack for fixing gadgets, he bought a broken drone and fixed it up. Lucky saved up to buy a brand-new drone, and his passion for photography soared! His friends quickly noticed his keen eye for photography as he took beautiful images without any formal training.

“I’m not very good at expressing what I see through words, but when I take a photograph of what I see, the picture speaks more than a thousand words. Capturing the beauty of

Lucky believes the Midlands is the best place to live as a landscape photographer because everything is on our doorstep. “We have forests, waterfalls, farms, the meander, mountains, villages, a city, dams, and rivers.” Lucky’s go-to cameras are his Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Drone, Canon 90D EOS DSLR camera and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra phone. We move from landscapes to what’s on the plate. Mike Bosse enjoys different genres of photography, but his love for capturing food was sparked after a weekend at Hartford House in 2016. He had the opportunity to shoot high-end dishes at the restaurant and really engaged with the process of post-plating and interacting with the chef. He has also shot for the esteemed Jackie Cameron based in Hilton.

“Food photography is a particular art form for me. It is all about being able to create a desire in the viewer, portraying taste through the medium of photography, or perhaps stir a memory.” Mike is inspired by the variety that is presented in every aspect of the Midlands, be it the weather, people or food. Our area is an escape to another world and away from the “rigours of daily life”. When capturing plates of mouth-watering food, Mike usually uses the Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera. With the abundance of nature found in the Midlands, we can’t forget wildlife photography. Dave Macdonald has been fascinated with snapping shots of the world around him since the age of three years old, thanks to discovering his grandfather’s camera. He grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe which created a connection between him and the natural world, including regular outings to game areas. With the advent of digital cameras, Dave found a ‘watering hole’, so to say, with abundant opportunities to capture the wildlife around him, and which started his real passion for photography. Dave retired here around 12 years ago and loves our countryside. He has taken a keen interest in bird life, which is currently his main area of photographic focus, using his trusty Sony α7R IV camera. “I’ve met a fellow retiree who had also taken up photography as a retirement pursuit. So, if you encounter two grey-haired gents carrying cameras sporting bazooka-like telephoto lenses in the hides of the Karkloof Conservancy, or on the shores of Midmar's waters, the chances are it will be us!” Go to @macdonald_dave on Instagram to have a look at Dave’s work.

“I Do” With a View

Nestled in the Blue Crane Nature Reserve, and overlooking the beautiful Nottingham Road valley, Brahman Hills is the place to have this masterful team create magical and memorable moments on your wedding day, with the most incredible views and scenery that will leave you in awe.

They have two ceremony venues, both offering phenomenal scenery. Starting with the chapels and then the respective venue, with enough distance apart that no two weddings will ever overlap.

OPTION ONE

CHAPEL: The Lake House - seating up to 260 guests - is suspended over the lake and, beyond the altar, the large glass windows look out onto uninterrupted views of the Midlands hills. Adding to its charm is the decorative fireplace. The venue has underfloor heating for those winter weddings and aircon for the summer, so it covers all seasons.

RECEPTION VENUE: The Glass House is polished with neutral decor, high beam ceiling with fairy lights, and gorgeous lighting, and overlooks the magnificent sculpture gardens. This venue can seat up to

350 guests, with a dancefloor, and 400 without a dancefloor.

OPTION TWO

CHAPEL: Valley View is an ‘underground’ chapel with herringbone brick floors and a wood-clad back wall decorated with foliage. The curved mason walls and ceiling are light and soft, with a rustic feel. Stunning views overlook the Blue Crane valley and a water feature directly in front of the chapel with fabulous stonework. The setting just leads to you watching the mist rolling in as you say your vows. How romantic!

RECEPTION VENUE: The Stables can seat up to 100 people or less. This venue is very contemporary with dark walls and screed flooring. It is just so unique with gardens and a fabulous outside area with a built-in firepit.

They are ready to spin your dreams into reality. A beautiful Midlands wedding is just the beginning: from their on-site accommodation and your pick of stunning reception venues all the way down to the perfectly folded napkin, they have your nuptials covered.

Going to the Chapel…

The Groves offers destination wedding packages for up to 200 guests. Their wedding offering includes indoor and outdoor spaces for couples to host their unforgettable ceremony.

With clean lines and minimalistic decor, you do not have to spend huge amounts decorating their gorgeous chapel. The space has a stone alcove as you arrive and large, light wooden doors open up into the chapel. Guests are seated on modern wood and metal benches where they are able to witness the couple’s union

A Little Bit More Intimate

KirstenVale Wedding Venue is a rustic yet elegant bush wedding venue just outside Pietermaritzburg, KZN. It’s not just a venue for the night of your wedding, but an entire game farm for you and your guests to enjoy over a weekend of celebration.

Along with their versatile reception venue, they offer four spectacular ceremony settings to choose from –the viewing deck (weathersafe), the acacia site, the fig tree and the river boma.

The farm boasts panoramic views of the mountains and Albert Falls Dam, while the iconic acacias and bushveld

give you that “miles away from reality” feel and, of course, the most gorgeous photos to remember your wedding day!

Their reception venue veranda is an obvious choice for a more intimate setting for up to 50 guests. This space has been transformed into multiple unique visions, with breathtaking views over the Karkloof Valley and the sunset over the mountains. The KirstenVale team is dedicated to making every wedding special and goes the extra mile for every wedding they host.

as well as enjoy the scenery through the large windows out over the farmlands.

The venue supplies a choice of arches that can be used, which their staff will happily move for you after the ceremony so that it can be repurposed in their elegant and contemporary reception venue. Huge blackframed, Tuscan mirrors adorn the main reception wall and an exquisite crystal chandelier hangs over the dance floor. The signing table, DJ table and guest seating are all included in the venue hire.

Under the Forest’s Veil

Haycroft Farm is an exclusive forest wedding venue set in the heart of the Midlands. Their outdoor option for your wedding ceremony is certainly something to gush over!

This magical forest chapel is nestled within the enchanted pine plantation and has witnessed many love stories.

An elevated wooden walkway leads you and your guests into the forest. Their wooden benches are nestled in between the tree trunks, and a wooden deck

overlooking the dam will be where you stand and say “I do”. The space can accommodate up to 180 guests.

Also available is their reception venue, which has been built on the edge of the woodland, surrounded by magnificent trees. The front of the venue opens up onto a terraced lawn that rolls down to the water's edge, and the subtle lighting and neutral walls are the perfect blank canvas to create the wedding of your dreams.

A GRAND ADVENTURE

TREVERTON COLLEGE STUDENTS TAKE ON THE TRAVERSE

It’s incredible what people can achieve when they really put their minds to it. This can be said for the Treverton College students and staff who hiked the 250-kilometre Drakensberg Grand Traverse in 13 days, summiting the five highest peaks. Two female students (Karijn Kooy and Georgina Thompson), three male students (Alexander Giokos, Konstantino Giokos and Daniel Jonck),

Headmaster Kean Broom, and three other staff members (Derek Brown, Channelle Oosthuizen and Shaun Robertson), as well as film graduate Ethan Lundy (who documented the hike), made up the team. What made the expedition even more special is that Karijn and Georgina are the first school girls to finish the traverse as part of a school group! After extensive planning and training, the Treverton hikers

set off on 25 March from Sentinel Car Park.

“On the trip, we were immersed in a world of big mountains, deep valleys, fresh crystal clear water, inclement weather, constant companionship, and the satisfaction of completing the day's walk before settling down into our tents for the night,” says Shaun. “Wide open spaces, physical effort,

44 | WWW.THEMIDLANDSMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

and the simplicity of living in this foreign environment have a magnetic effect on the hearts of those who choose to wander into them.” Overall, the weather was on their side, allowing for phenomenal views of the KZN Midlands and Lesotho. However, storms and strong winds hit on their way to, and the night after summiting, Thabana Ntlenyana. Respite soon came when they stopped at Sani Pass pub, the highest pub in Africa, for a hot meal after travelling across frozen ground.

On top of carrying their heavy bags filled with their provisions (as well as filming equipment!), the students overcame many challenges to finish their journey. After dropping hot water on his foot, Daniel continued hiking with second and third-degree burns, earning him the title “Dan the Man”. Alexander struggled with his stomach, resulting in him feeling very weak. Derek fixed him right up by creating an ‘elixir’ with ash and water. Karijn spent

many nights coughing due to a respiratory tract infection, which concerned the whole team. However, she persevered without complaint or struggle. Shaun adds, “While these troubles may seem somewhat trivial in our modern world, small problems become big problems in the mountains very quickly if not dealt with. The students worked through their individual struggles bravely and finished well.”

There were many others who helped this 10-person team along their journey. On day five, another group of Treverton College students hiked up Organ Pipes Pass to drop off much-needed food and other supplies. The second restock was driven to Sani Pass pub on day 11. Companies and individuals also lent a hand by sponsoring food, clothing, first aid kits and camera equipment. On day 13, the hikers ended their expedition at Bushman's Neck Border Post, feeling incredibly proud of their achievement. “The trip was a great success.

This would not be the case if it wasn’t for the perseverance and determination of the students and staff on the trip, and I am so pleased with the character that they displayed throughout. I am also so thankful to those who helped and supported us,” says Shaun.

If you would like to experience just a nugget of their hike of the Drakensberg Grand Traverse, you’re in luck. Barry Smit has used Ethan’s footage to put together a documentary that follows the adventure, filled to the brim with out-of-this-world views and the hikers’ smiling faces. We are in awe of what these Treverton students and staff have accomplished!

Hair Care

for Any Occasion

Leah Jackson, the owner of Sleek Avenue Hair Salon in Nottingham Road at the Sherwood Centre, has had a blast sharing her passion and talent as a hairdresser with the local community. She established the salon in December 2020 and strives to offer the best personal hair care service at affordable pricing for a range of clients. “I aim to leave my customers feeling unique and authentic,” she says.

Leah started her hairdressing journey when she was 19 years old. She moved to Pietermaritzburg and enrolled at a beauty training school that taught her all the required skills such as cutting, styling, and colouring. She has worked at

various salons in the Midlands where she gained confidence and eventually had the opportunity to freelance on her own, which attracted returning clients. “The continued support I had received inspired me to open up my own hair salon to expand my talents and passion for hair.”

The salon space sports tranquil green and grey walls, which fit well with the minimalistic style of the interior, whilst not taking away from its cosy and inviting ambience. Whilst sitting on the couch as you wait for your haircut, you can also enjoy the greenery of the view outside. It has the perfect atmosphere for when you need to escape the world for an hour or two to take some quality care of yourself.

Many of Leah and her team’s services cater to special occasions such as weddings and matric dances, which can be done at the salon or right at the venue for your convenience. They always make sure you leave you feeling elegant and well taken care of before the function, including nails and make-up on request. The salon also offers everyday cuts, colours and stylings, if you are wanting to just treat yourself or upgrade your look.

Along with its salon-approved luxury hair care range, Sleek Avenue Hair Salon stocks a variety of hair care treatments for all the different types of hair that will walk through its doors. The Importance of Healthy Hearing

The association between untreated hearing loss, Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia is an area of intense research. Studies suggest that people with hearing loss are more likely to develop cognitive problems because hearing loss causes brain changes that raise the risk for dementia.

One of the changes caused by hearing loss is “brain shrinkage”. When the auditory cortex of the brain grows inactive, it results in tissue loss and changes in brain structure. The second link between hearing loss and dementia is “brain overload”. When it’s difficult to hear, the brain must work overtime just to understand what people are saying. Straining to hear all day depletes a person’s mental energy and steals brain power needed for other crucial functions like remembering, thinking and acting.

The third link between hearing loss and Alzheimer’s is social isolation. A study by the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) found that people with untreated hearing loss are more likely to experience loneliness, depression and anxiety and are less likely to engage in social activities. When a person withdraws from life, their risk for dementia intensifies. In short, the less we stimulate our brains by using it to hear and listen, the quicker our brain function declines, putting us at greater risk for dementia.

Why Are Hearing Tests So Important?

If a loved one is having trouble understanding speech

and finding simple conversations exhausting, help them to get their hearing checked sooner rather than later. Hearing loss has some of the same symptoms as cognitive impairment. Sometimes, undiagnosed hearing loss symptoms are mistakenly thought to be indicators of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

A hearing test is the only way to confirm hearing loss, and, once confirmed, it is important to know that the person is at a higher risk of developing dementia. The earlier hearing loss is identified the sooner one is able to engage in treatment plans to help minimise the risk of cognitive decline.

A treatment plan may include taking medications as recommended, staying active and socially engaged, and wearing hearing aids. Numerous studies have shown that hearing aids not only improve a person’s hearing but also help preserve a person’s independence, mental abilities, and emotional and physical health, and encourage social interaction. A hearing impairment escalates feelings of confusion, disorientation and isolation. Hearing aids can help relieve Alzheimer’s symptoms by making communication easier and slowing the rate of memory decline by keeping your brain active.

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT PETS AND PROPERTY?

Okay, so before I kick off this article, I have a confession to make. I’m not a journalist and therefore am unapologetically biased when it comes to this subject. I do however have plenty of professional experience and insight on the subject and my own personal pet journey. My stance is simple. More often than not, pets are one of the biggest deciding factors when purchasing a residential property. This means that estates and sectional title developments that limit the number or species of pets, or prohibit them altogether, generally reduce their buyer pool significantly and in certain markets can compromise property values. Right, so now that I’ve made my position clear, let me provide some insight.

There is a mountain of evidence to back up the theory that pets, specifically dogs and cats, provide their pet parents with various mental and physical benefits, including a sense of belonging, connection and contentment. It’s been found that sitting quietly and stroking your pet’s coat can trigger the release of oxytocin, the so-called ‘love hormone’. To be honest, this is a relief to me as I often question whether my love for our family dogs is at all normal or healthy.

The bottom line is that despite the chaos and expense they often bring to our lives, pets are an integral part of family life and are often unwitting decision-makers in the home-buying process. Moreover, in a market such as the Midlands, the buyer profile clearly points to young families and retirees, many of whom enjoy the companionship of a family pet.

We work across a number of premier lifestyle estates and markets and have witnessed first-hand the impact

pets have on property values and decision-making. I’ve also sat on various homeowners associations and debated pet policies that in many cases are arbitrarily constituted and cut and pasted from a neighbouring estate without so much as a second thought or discussion. I’ve heard all the arguments, for and against, but ultimately I’m a firm believer in taking a more reasonable, common-sense approach. Why should we restrict ownership to two dogs and not three? Why only dogs and no cats? Why only dogs under 20 kilograms? (That would rule out my robust chocolate labrador by the way).

An argument by some eco and wildlife estates in KZN, including our area, is that dogs shouldn’t be allowed due to the impact on wild game, whereas some of the top residential wildlife estates in Hoedspruit, for example (including the one that Tom Cruise lived in for a few months), allow dogs, and simply ensure some basic rules and behaviours are enforced. This has opened up their product to a far wider buyer pool and created a well-balanced resident profile.

Whilst rules and restrictions, not just about pets, have their place in order to manage and maintain a degree of consistency and harmony in gated estates or complexes, they can also lead to management headaches, unnecessary tensions and restrictive buyer pools. With so many other considerations and areas to concern oneself with, I think we should give the family pet a break and become a bit more understanding of their value and impact on our lives.
