eStAte MANAGer’S LETTER

Welcome to our ninth edition of the Kindlewood Estate Magazine. I have been at Kindlewood since February 2023 and it’s been an experience getting to know all staff and members of the association. As you know, evidently the estate presents itself beautifully and with prestige. A vital input and influence by the members of the associations and all contracted role players have made it possible to maintain the upkeep of our estate.

We are moving into the second quarter of the year. A lot has occurred, and we anticipate more to come. Another successful AGM was held on 4 May 2023 which was well-attended and supported by the residents. The board of directors as standing in 2022, including Dr Seelan Naidoo, Vee Kisten, Sharveen Maharaj, Brendon Ferrar and Rahul Roopanand, have had a vested interest in managing the

estate. Our goal is to give back to the Kindlewood community.

The additions of amenities for Kindlewood Estate are currently in progress. An upgraded jungle gym has been installed at the park on entering gate number 2, our amazing rock will soon be completed above dam number 1, and additional recreation seating areas are currently being created to offer residents time to spend leisurely on our estate. We are envisaging expanding our current CC and gymnasium to accommodate our residents for both private and recreational use.

Our landscaping team has really exceeded all expectations. Our gardens and wetlands are perfectly beautiful for all our residents to appreciate. We are progressing by adding additional trees, flowers, plants, and grass to our eco estate. We are proud to announce that Kindlewood Estate has won the

SALI Landscaping Award and credit should be given to Leitch Landscapes for affording our estate the privilege of being successful in this nomination.

We had loads of fun at our famous pizza evening in March this year. We had attendance by a number of 50-odd residents, who created a fantastic family and community orientation atmosphere. An Easter Family Fun Day was held in April which was attended by a large number of Kindlewood kiddies, who looked amazing in their Easter outfits. We had an Easter egg hunt, bestdressed competition and egg and spoon race which was participated by parents and kids.

Thankfully, it is cooling down nicely after a relatively hot summer. We look forward to what the rest of 2023 has to offer.

Our family is made up of Sunil, Arusha, Sunaina and Suheer. I (Sunil) am an orthopaedic surgeon who spent my youth in Chatsworth. Arusha, my wife, is an anaesthetist who comes from Reservoir Hills. We met at medical school at Wits University in 1994, the year Nelson Mandela became president!

We got married in 2002 and moved to Glenwood into a small

townhouse. In 2006, we moved into Edgeview after having our two kids. Sunaina, our daughter, is 20 years old and currently attending medical school at the University of Pretoria. She matriculated from Danville Park Girls’ High School. Our son, Suheer, is 16 years old and in Grade 11 at Crawford La Lucia.

Sadly, we lost our pet, Luna, an English cocker spaniel, in 2021.

She loved walking with us on the pathways around the estate. As a family, we enjoy travelling, going on adventures, visiting game reserves and, recently, birding.

Arusha started birding two years ago and seizes every opportunity to go to a game reserve or even have a walk around Kindlewood to view the beautiful and abundant birdlife. She wants to start a list of birds spotted in the estate.

We moved to Kindlewood in 2013 after experiencing three burglaries at our previous home. Moving into this estate makes us feel like we are living back in a time when neighbours became family and kids played on the street. My son actually learnt to ride his bike and skateboard on Umlilo Close.

The sense of community and family in Kindlewood became evident during the COVID-19 lockdown. Our neighbours showed so much support as they brought us meals, medication and groceries. This became even more evident during the unrest. We all stood together protecting our loved ones and homes. Neighbours

sent home loaves of bread, milk and even baked goods. Fresh produce was divided and shared. I can go on and on about the endless acts of selflessness.

We love Kindlewood. Our home looks out onto a greenbelt filled with lovely birdlife. It is great to be woken up by birds chirping. This reminds us of our trips to Hluhluwe and Kruger National Park.

We love going for a walk on the walkways throughout the estate and relaxing at home after a hectic day at work, without having to look over our shoulders in fear of getting robbed. The safety aspect of Kindlewood was a huge drawcard for us to move here.

On 15 April 2023, many residents came out to enjoy our Easter Family Fun Day event. Kids dressed up for the best-dressed competition and we handed out baskets to all the kids. Some even made or brought their own baskets.

The Easter egg hunt event commenced just after 10:00 a.m., and we soon had a winner for the most eggs gathered. There were also two egg surprises. The children who found the two eggs with the tiny carrots hidden inside won prizes as well. We then had an egg and spoon race in which all ages competed and, finally, the winner of each age group competed for an all-round winner. Moms and dads also competed at the end, just for some fun!

Mount Edg E co M b E Villag E car E c E ntr E

Situated in the Mount Edgecombe Village, the Mount Edgecombe Village Care Centre draws on the Blue Zone factors for health and well-being to design a care centre that incorporates natural light, calming colour and comfortable social spaces into its design, and a varied and healthy menu for residents.

Presently, South Africans 60 years or older amount to approximately 4.2 million people. In 2050, this figure will rise to 10 million people. Over 60s are increasing, which means that they need age-friendly environments to ensure quality of life, health, and social well-being.

Dan Buettner identified areas around the globe, referred to as ‘Blue Zones’,

where people live to 100, and the reasons why. These Blue Zones include Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy and Okinawa in Japan. They identified nine denominators that contribute to the longevity of these centenarians: move naturally, have a purpose, downshift, eat until you are 80% full, eat more plants, drink some wine, belong to a community, enjoy family and social interaction. By applying these principles at TOTALCARE, we aim to create a healthy environment with a safe and caring community to ensure happy longevity for our residents.

TOTALCARE Founder and Director Cornel Nieuwenhuizen explains, “Our philosophy is linked to the Blue Zones approach that identifies factors for healthy ageing, and one key factor is social interaction

with your community. When we begin conceptualising a care centre, we marry practicality, regional context, the emotional impact of space, and ways to foster greater community interaction.”

With a deliberate move away from the typical ‘old age homes’, and with fostering social interaction central to the design of the Mount Edgecombe Village Care Centre, social spaces and rest areas are thoughtfully designed and positioned.

The Mount Edgecombe Village Care Centre is proactive about the physical safety of residents with spaces cleverly designed to minimise the use of steps and no loose carpets or rugs are used as they present a tripping hazard. Soft-edged furniture is used, and hard structural elements have a

20 | Kindlewood

soft finish. Furniture below hip level, like coffee tables, is replaced with ottomans in soft materials to make movement through a space less hazardous. Furniture is specifically designed for the comfort of elderly residents. Chairs are sturdy to provide adequate physical support, and seating is not too deep and low in consideration of residents with compromised mobility. The communal social and rest areas at the Mount Edgecombe Village Care Centre have been designed to invite natural light in through glass doors and windows while covered patios also provide the opportunity for residents to sit outside. TOTALCARE offers the comfort and sophistication of a hotel, with the care and attention

of private, specialised nursing. We implement a preventative strategy where the resident remains healthy through care, nutrition, and social interaction. We believe in a caring community to ensure happy longevity.

The Mount Edgecombe Village Care Centre adopts a holistic approach to well-being that covers both the practical and intangible aspects that make a care centre inviting for the elderly. Being part of a safe residential area with access to social, physical and mental activities may establish a sense of belonging. The synergy between the Care Centre and village is an important and beneficial attribute that encourages

multi-generational living and ensures interdependence between residents.

The Care Centre is the heartbeat of the village and as Jonathan Shutte, our facility manager, rightly acknowledges: “We dedicate the success of our excellent service delivery to our passionate staff. None of what we do would be possible without them. In four short years, we have grown a team of experienced leaders who are pioneering the way in elderly care in KZN. ’’

We currently manage eight frail care and assisted living facilities in South Africa where we provide the needed functions to enhance the resident’s health through comprehensive service delivery including holistic, multidisciplinary care, medication administration, acts of daily living assistance, security, nutritious meals, housekeeping, social interaction, and peace of mind. Through observation, engagement, and implementation we can meet individual needs that range from enhancing a resident’s lifestyle to ensuring peace of mind for the loved ones.

In conclusion, we borrow the words of Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner: “To make it to age 100, you have to have won the genetic lottery. But most of us have the capacity to make it well into our early 90s and largely without chronic disease. The average person’s life expectancy could increase by 10 to 12 years by adopting a Blue Zones lifestyle.’’

Here’s the air fryer version of South Africa’s favourite tea-time treat.

Preparation time: 30 minutes, plus refrigeration time

Air fryer temperature: 160°C

Cooking time: approximately 60 minutes

Serves: 6 to 8

INGREDIENTS

• 1 roll ready-made shortcrust pastry

Filling

• 600ml full-cream milk

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 6 cardamom pods

• 90g (100ml) castor sugar

• 35g (65ml) cake flour

• 20ml cornflour

• Pinch of salt

• 40g (45ml) butter

• 3 large eggs

• 5ml vanilla essence

• Ground cinnamon or cinnamon sugar, to serve

METHOD

1. Grease a 15cm pie tin. Unroll the pastry onto a lightly floured surface and roll out lightly so it is a little thinner. Cut out a circle to line the pie tin. Make sure it is large enough to allow a little excess pastry to hang over the sides slightly. Place the pastry into the pie dish and prick the base a few times with a fork. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the air fryer to 160°C. Put the pie tin into the basket and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the pastry is firm and a light golden colour. Remove from the air fryer and cool. Use a sharp, serrated knife to trim off the excess pastry to leave a neat edge.

3. To make the filling, heat the milk with the cinnamon sticks and cardamom pods. In a bowl, stir the sugar, flour, cornflour and a pinch of salt together and set aside. Bring the milk to the boil, then reduce the heat and add the sugar and flour mixture, whisking well to prevent lumps. Cook, stirring, for 10 minutes until thickened. Remove the cinnamon sticks and cardamom pods. Add the butter.

4. Whisk in the eggs and vanilla.

5. Pour the filling into the prepared crust and cook in the preheated air fryer at 160°C for 25 to 30 minutes or until the filling is set, but still slightly wobbly. Set aside to cool.

6. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve sprinkled with cinnamon or cinnamon sugar.
