Like many Southern Californian’s, Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA), always seemed like foreign territory to me. That is until recently when I moved here and became one of the 68,000 downtowners. Since then, I’ve realized how much there is to love. As the new editor of DTLA LIFE MAG ®, it is my mission to spread that love and inspire readers to venture into the unknown. And there is no better time than the present! SUMMER means exploring. Before you jet off on your exotic vacations, see what your city center has to offer with a staycation. Get in your cars, jump in an Uber, or if you are looking to embrace the urban lifestyle, hope on the metro and see what awaits. Hungry? Grab your foodies for a delicious meal at a new restaurant. Not full yet? Head to a downtown food festival; there is one dedicated to tacos and even donuts! Need to shake up the routine? Visit downtown’s museums and galleries for an enriching cultural adventure. Bored of your local theater? Watch your next movie on the big screen of a restored theater, or on a warm night, head to Pershing Square for an outdoor screening. Want to take the edge off? Treat yourself: visit one of Downtown’s new spas! Feeling classy? Dress to impress and enjoy the ballet! Need to get your finances in line? Talk to your banker while sipping away at a coffee shop. Downtown truly has it ALL, the only thing missing is YOU. So, for those who have yet to venture to Downtown Los Angeles (and yes I’m talking to my friends) DTLA LIFE MAG’s summer issue presents you with more than enough reasons why you should. See you soon in Downtown LA! #ilovemydtlalife

These apartment homes feature a modern twist on contemporary apartment life, offering the ultimate urban-living experience at the corner of Olympic Blvd. and Grand Ave., just steps from LA Live, Staples Center, and all the entertainment, dining and shopping experiences that Downtown LA has to offer. 1000 GRAND by WINDSOR invites you to experience Downtown Los Angeles apartment living at its finest. The building is a conversation starter featuring historical elements such as reclaimed brick and a preserved mural from the famous 1910 Myron’s Ballroom that used to occupy the site. Myrna Myron, a former chorus girl who founded Myron’s Ballroom, was an astute entrepreneur. She became a millionaire many times over by buying up parking lots, coffee shops and making other investments. “She wanted to be No.1 at anything she did,” her son said. The ballroom, though, was her proudest accomplishment. It became a magnet for Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Mae West and Rudolph Valentino, who was said to have charged $100 a dance there. Decades later in the 1908’s, Myron’s became home of Chippendale’s, the male strip joint that drew hordes of women, and Vertigo, one of the first New York-style clubs that catered to Los Angeles’ elite. Thank you again to everyone that visited us for our grand opening and all our amazing sponsors; Barcito Restaurant, LOIT Cafe, Bodvar Rosés, Gen & Bolt, Pussy & Pooch, What’s up Downtown with Hal Bastian, DripDoctors, Desuar Spa, and of course the fabulous team at 1000 Grand by Windsor. DTLA LIFE is proud to serve everyone looking to buy, lease, sell or invest in Downtown LA at their new location in South Park.

ARE YOU IN?

EVERYONE IN is a campaign focused on ending homelessness across Los Angeles County by providing critical services to those who need it most and helping transition people experiencing long-term homelessness with short-term and permanent housing solutions. Homelessness is the result of economic, social, and personal conditions shared by many of us in L.A. People experiencing homelessness represent a cross-section of our community: single mothers and families, people struggling with physical disabilities, mental illness, and addiction, the unemployed and underpaid, veterans and college graduates, victims of abuse and victims of bad luck. Homelessness has many faces and takes many forms. Ultimately, homelessness is a human-created problem with uniquely humandriven solutions. With committed resources and political and community desire, Los Angeles can end homelessness.

and goes to the goal of providing services and creating supportive housing throughout Los Angeles. The campaign has already experienced great success! Opened in 2011 by owners Jeffrey Faust and Woogene Lee, fundamental LA is a beloved Westwood neighborhood institution, known for its counter service lunch, more refined full-service dinner, and eclectic wine selection. Faust and Lee have expanded their concept to Downtown Los Angeles - fundamental DTLA. The new location offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering continuous service, daily. Breakfast service offers a wide selection of pastries and baked goods on display, and all breads (except gluten free option) for sandwiches at both locations are now baked inhouse. Andy Lee, who has been executive chef for fundamental LA’s popular events and catering branch since Fall 206, helms the kitchen. He seamlessly rounds out fundamental LA’s seasonal comfort fare, with an entirely new breakfast menu and additions to lunch standards. For dinner, the menu touts flavor-driven crowd-pleasers that feature farmers market produce, sustainable seafood and modern dishes influenced by an array of international flavors. The main dining room seats 40, the bar seats 6, and the outdoor patio provides an additional 16 seats along Grand Avenue. fundamental DTLA offers guests the choice to dine-in (full-service) or take-out (counter service) for lunch; there is also a call-ahead option for quick pick-up. Breva is the brand new Mediterranean signature restaurant hotspot just opened at Hotel Figueroa’s. Chef Lane and cocktailier Dushan were inspired by their travels through the Western Mediterranean and have designed these culinary experiences to be the central heart and soul of Hotel Figueroa, making it a vibrant meeting place in DTLA. Breva is a Basque inspired brasserie with Mediterranean influences. The menu captures the flavor and conviviality of the Western Mediterranean culture while incorporating California’s finest fresh and seasonal ingredients Some of the most delicious dishes were the Broccolini served with chili vinegar, harissa, and bone marrow bread crumbs, Roasted Cauliflower served with a walnut and caper salsa, and the Flatiron Steak served with crunchy seasoned french fries. All are designed to be served individually or shared family style, in keeping with the relaxed setting that exudes an air of visiting in a friend’s home. Fine china in varying patterns add charm to the tables which are set among comfortable banquettes and nooks, and the room sparkles both day and night with lighting that bounces off an expansive, custom designed mirror with faceted glass and wood features. Another impeccable aspect of Breva’s dining experience are their Gintonicos, particularly delicious was the Maré with thyme, basil, green cardamom, mandarin, and Three Cents Tonic. To top it off, the waiters are incredibly accommodating and warm, adding to the homey environment of Breva and Hotel Figueroa. This must be at the top of your DTLA restaurant hit list!

More than just an oyster bar, at Rappahannock, chef Nick Erven is building the seafood menu of his dreams where he’s pairing an East Coast foundation with his eclectic LA flare. The casual yet vibrant restaurant is nestled in ROW DTLA’s historic produce terminal, guests are invited into a space that takes cues from the organic nature of the oyster-farming process, blending live plants, blackened steel, zinc table tops, copper accents and colorful tile, while also exhibiting the artistic energy and raw industrial design of Downtown Los Angeles. The menu and the space go hand-in-hand, with an organic yet progressive nature. Emphasizing on sustainability, locally sourced ingredients, ethically fished, and responsibly farmed ingredients - seafood is chef Nick’s natural canvas painted by the myriad of distinct ingredients and flavors that make Los Angeles unique. The end result is a masterfully articulated menu that’s ultimately balanced, familiar, comfort-driven yet uniquely it’s own.

in addition to California favorites to pair with the menu. The beers at Rappahannock Oyster Bar include local Downtown Los Angeles and Southern California craft breweries such as Boomtown, Angel City, Santa Monica Brewery and Iron Triangle. Chef Steve Samson has vivid childhood memories of Bologna’s outdoor festas that recall a spirit of conviviality and celebration around food that was lovingly made and produced by the community. The city of Bologna and its region of Emilia-Romagna serve as Samson’s inspiration. It is the region where his mother, her parents, and countless generations before were born. It is also the place where he spent his childhood summers, fomenting a passion for Italian food and cooking. After years cooking in some of Italy and Los Angeles’ finest kitchens, Samson is opening a restaurant that tells the tale of his two cities. Rossoblu showcases Emilia Romagna’s “cucina della nonna,” namely that of Samson’s mother and grandmother. He grew up eating tortellini in brodo, tagliatelle al ragu’, milk braised pork, and countless others. All of Rossoblu’s pasta are freshly made “al matterello” - by hand and with a traditional, large rolling pin in the underground, glassed-in Pasta Room. The kitchen pays homage to Samson’s grandfather with a large wood-burning hearth powered by oak coals and outfitted with a spit for roasting. Most fresh sausages and aged salumi are produced in-house. The downstairs Butcher Box, housing the butchering and preparation of the meats are on display for guests in the private dining room via a connecting glass window. Wine director Jeremy Parzen curated Rossoblu’s wine program. The list is PanItalian, including a large selection of natural wines, and a collection of eclectic California wines. The open patio, which seats 60, serves as a Lambrusco garden, featuring the city’s most complete selection of the refreshing red sparkler. The bar features craft cocktails by bar director Brynn Smith (also of Sotto) celebrating Italian spirits and seasonal ingredients, and a curated selection of beers. Architecture and design by Marwan Al Sayed, interiors by Mies Al Sayed (masastudio.com) and graphic design from J.P. Guiseppi, preserve the building’s raw, industrial feel of what was once the oldest wholesale produce market in Los Angeles and call forth a modern sensibility and understand elegance. A hearth-like open kitchen sets the stage in the center of the tall, vaulted dining room punctuated by industrial concrete columns and a sprawling, serpentine bar made of brass and marble. These details are softened by long couch-like banquettes printed with comfortably familiar “nonna” lace details and table tops that casually fit together like puzzle pieces when pushed together. A large-scale mural by CYRCLE spans the eastern wall of the dining room. CYRCLE (cyrcle.com), an LA-based street art collective, created the mural directly based upon Steve and Dina Samson’s inspiration for Rossoblu using classical imagery and unexpected composition and pops of color to represent the melding of old Italian tradition and the urbane grit of modern Los Angeles.

Bavel is now open in the infamous Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The incredibly delicious Middle Eastern food is the creative work of Chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis. With family roots in Israel, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt, Menashe and Gergis have always wanted to open a restaurant that showcases the cuisine from their family lineage. Bavel brings together the flavors and dishes that Menashe and Gergis grew up with while adding a completely new perspective on the cuisine. The menu is meant to be a feast that everyone at the table partakes in. The food utilizes slow cooking with aromatic woods, spices and pickling, a lot of smoke and herbs, and clean and fresh ingredients. There are different versions of flat breads and spreads, chef’s selection of cured Middle Eastern meats, cold and hot small plates with a highlight on salads and vegetables, and large format meat and fish dishes. Gergis’s desserts take traditional flavors and ingredients found in the Middle East and builds upon their tradition with a touch of modernity. Pulling from regions all over the Middle East area, Bavel incorporates a complex and layered flavors with an authentic yet modern approach. In addition to the spectacular cuisine, the restaurant’s design by Studio UNLTD and Genevieve Gergis, is equally magnificent. The restaurant embraces the influence of the regions from which the cuisine is derived, interpreting those ideas through the lens of its Arts District location. The worn brick warehouse, soaring sawtooth skylights, spacious patio and extensive raceway of planters give Bavel a wonderful ambience that is sure to captivate visitors. Capital One Cafe

Capital One is about really empowering people to feel confident about their relationship with their money. Interesting nugget, only 36% of Los Angeles residents feel confident when thinking about their personal finances, and almost two-thirds (60%) of L.A. residents say they would like to do better when it comes to personal finances, but are not sure where to start. That’s not an uncommon sentiment as compared to other parts of the nation either. That’s why Capital One aim is to redesign the banking experience, starting with making things really simple and straightforward and creating an experience that fits naturally into their customers’ lives. The Café is a space that has been intentionally designed for how people live and bank today. Most of us prefer a digital and mobile experience, but from time to time we want a human connection, too - that’s the role of the Capital One Cafés opening everywhere in the country. Here is what to expect walking through the new Downtown Los Angeles Capital One Café: Walk in and be greeted by a Café Ambassador sporting apparel curated by former Project Runway contestant Shirin Askari. The Ambassador would order you coffee using an Apple Watch and then take you to sit on a comfortable sofa (not behind a desk) to help coach you through setting up an account, paying your bills online, applying for a credit card or any other bank related request you might have. You would also have the opportunity to learn; new digital tools through the interactive Demo Bar, challenge your financial knowledge through interactive screens that provide educational money content, utilize one of the free Nooks or Multifunction Space, deposit or withdrawal in any denomination using the Cash-Deposit ATMs available, use free Wi-Fi while enjoying a cup of coffee or local baked good from Peet’s Coffee, or enjoy sunny days on the outdoor patio. The space is also designed to continually give new experiences each time you walk through – from little messages and moments that make you feel good about what you’re doing there, to an interactive, visual-forward ethos that inspires you to do things on your own terms.

Butterflies are taking flight at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles! This seasonal exhibit — located outside on the south side of the Museum — features more flight space, more resting spots, and more natural light. The pavilion showcases hundred of butterflies and the plants that surround them, an interaction that has been refined over the course of millions of years. The Gallery Interpreters will explain how butterflies use their tubular mouthparts to obtain nectar and describe the magnificent metamorphosis that occurs as caterpillars transform into adults. In addition to the butterflies laying eggs, they regularly fill the pavilion with butterflies from across the United States, meaning that various types are present at different points during the season, making each visit different from the next! As of now they have 20 specimens of California natives such as the monarch, mourning cloak and buckeye as well as 10 species of subtropical varieties from south Florida and Texas, such as the malachite and the grey cracker.

Last Remaining Seats

The Los Angeles Conservancy’s signature series of classic films in historic theatres Last Remaining Seats, returns for a thirty-second season. The Downtown Los Angeles Summer’s favorite presents films as they are meant to be seen: on the big screen, in a beautiful theatre, surrounded by fellow fans, and accompanied by vintage cartoons, special guests, and more. T he film series began in 1987 as a way to draw attention to the spectacular yet overlooked and underused historic theatres of Los Angeles. The film series has since become a summer tradition, drawing thousands of people from the region, the nation, and outside the U.S. Most of the films screened during Last Remaining Seats have spanned a range of genres, from silent gems and musical comedies to hard-boiled noir and Latin American classics. Yet most of the actors on screen (and filmmakers off-screen) haven’t reflected the vast diversity of Los Angeles. With this in mind, staff and volunteers carefully curated this year’s lineup to include a range of themes and perspectives. In addition to being particularly timely and relevant, the 2018 lineup reflects the Conservancy’s renewed commitment to diversity and inclusion. While most of the screenings will take place in the movie palaces of downtown L.A., the series will travel to San Gabriel for the very first time for a screening at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Tickets cost $22 for the general public, $18 for Conservancy members, and (new this year) $16 for youth 17 and under. Proceeds support the Conservancy’s efforts to preserve historic places throughout L.A. County. Tickets are available at laconservancy.org/last-remaining-seats. In addition to the screenings, the Conservancy will offer exclusive theatre and backstage tours, bar trivia after Saturday screenings, and free theatre Q&As.

FIRST EVER DONUT FESTIVAL Photos Courtesy of Jakob Layman

The original “rush-hour” treat and the most famous graband-go breakfast on the planet is having a renaissance, and on June 16th, Union Station was taking guests into the center of the movement with a one-day edible exploration of L.A.’s favorite pastry at the first-ever DTLA Donut Festival. The momentously mouthwatering event showcased the donut in all its many guises: plain, glazed and filled; traditional; and new wave along with “donut-adjacent” treats including churros, apple fritters and (of course) donut holes. Guests strolled through the The Whole Donut Marketplace, a baker’s dozen of donut vendors from L.A.’s old-school cult favorites to trendy “fashion-forward” pastry including: Primo’s Donuts, a classic Westside L.A. donut destination since 1956. DK’s Donuts, home of the double-decker #O-NUT featured on Food Network. The Downtown LA Donut Festival also featured third-wave coffee vendors for dunking as well as donut-compatible offerings including wood-fired pizza and craft beer to round out the edible offerings. Chef demos throughout the day taught visitors how to make their own photo-ready donuts, and hands-on coffee workshops from the Institute of Domestic Technology will offer a dive deep into the technical how-to of the perfect cup. We are looking forward to next year and enjoy again this new successfull event.

LA TACO FESTIVAL

Photos Courtesy of John Chaides

The L.A. Taco Festival is an annual event that brings our city together over a food we all love-tacos, and supports a cause that we can all get behind- helping homeless youth succeed. On August 18th, thousands of people will head to the heart of downtown Los Angeles in Grand Park to enjoy some of the most delicious tacos our city has to offer. Live music performances will be held all throughout the day, with interactive activities and vendor booths! The festival is organized and benefits Jovenes, Inc., a non-profit organization in Boyle Heights that provides housing and supportive services to homeless youth between the age of 18-24. A home and family for those without, Jovenes helps young people end their cycle of homelessness. Located in Boyle Heights and serving communities throughout Southeast LA County, Jovenes goes deep – focusing on not only their needs for housing, but also healthcare, education, employment, and trauma recovery. In addition to working with homeless youth, Jovenes is creating innovative housing solutions for homeless community college students in Los Angeles. Homelessness does not define our youth – it’s just an experience they go through. Jovenes’ housing and supportive services are tools that help youth achieve their goals and transform their lives. Homelessness impacts young people from all walks of life. In Los Angeles, there are thousands of homeless youth sleeping on our streets on any given night. No two stories are the same – some grew up in foster care, some are pushed out of their homes after they come out as LGBTQ. Some youth face economic challenges, and for others it’s a daily struggle with mental health. 1 in 5 of LA’s community college students experiences homelessness. There are over 3,000 homeless youth in Los Angeles on any given night Having a place to call home and supportive people to trust can make all the difference and help youth leave homelessness behind. Jovenes recognizes the resiliency and ambition in these individuals, and it is unacceptable to let homelessness limit their dreams. The event is open to the public and all taco lovers! It is free to attend with a $5 suggested donation to support Jovenes’ work with homeless youth.

American ntemporary Ballet

Audiences have come to expect the unexpected from ACB’s original ballets. This August, ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones premieres two ballets which are as different as night and day. Candide Overture celebrates Leonard Bernstein’s centennial with a tribute to his sunny, ebullient, rhythmic dance music. Transfigured Night explores the haunting yet radiant inward world of two lovers as the woman confesses a secret. The music, written by Arnold Schoenberg before he developed his twelve-tone system, reveals a young composer of the deepest feeling and stunning melodic and harmonic gifts. This exceptional representation starts on Thursday, August 2nd with several performances until August 11th. ART SPOTLIGHT Bill Sherwood by

Petra Wright

Mixed Media artist Bill Sherwood returns to the GDCA Gallery with his second solo exhibition at GDCA Gallery - “MY TOWN”. Sherwood is hardly a stranger to DTLA. For many, the artist’s bold, multi-layered and textured paintings strike the opening notes of their Downtown experience. Two of his colorful abstracts welcome visitors in the lobby of the Historic Core BID offices, while a custom 3-panel shadow-painting graces their conference room, representing the energy and architectural structures of Downtown. “MY TOWN” exhibits the artist latest work, broadening his exploration to Los Angeles as a whole. Using his signature style and medium – reverse mixed media on Plexiglas – Sherwood aptly layers energy (gesture), psychology (depth) and emotion (color), to recreate this complex cocktail of agony and ecstasy, we call home. We are all seekers – transplanted from various corners of the world - having made our journeys here in search of our individual dreams. Sherwood’s compositions examine the glitz and the glamour, the hopes and aspirations, the disappointments, capitulations, silences and heartbreaks - and the re-birthing of one’s purpose and identity that must follow. “MY TOWN” is a love letter to Los Angeles, written by the artist with fearlessness, sensitivity, honesty and joie de vivre. Los Angeles is Sherwood’s Town, and to our pleasure, he is here to stay. “MY TOWN” is on display at GDCA Gallery through June 30th. For more information, please contact the gallery directly at (323) 309-2875 or email Petra at petra@GDCAgallery.com

A Journey That Wasn’t is a free exhibition that explores complex representations of time and its passage. The exhibition includes more than 50 works drawn from The Broad Museum’s collection of postwar and contemporary art, and features more than 20 artists including Bernd and Hilla Becher, Gregory Crewdson, Andreas Gursky, Elliott Hundley, Pierre Huyghe, Anselm Kiefer, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sherrie Levine, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Paul Pfeiffer and Ed Ruscha. a barn and photographed the children whenever they wanted — without sentimentality or nostalgia. Both a series of portraits and an ethnographic study, the installation slowly exposes the area’s characteristics and aspirations. Pierre Huyghe’s A Journey That Wasn’t, 2006, the work that gives the exhibition its title, is one of many artworks in the show that follow subjective changes of time, perceived through emotion imagination and the distortions of memory. Huyghe took a trip to Antarctica in search of an elusive and rare albino penguin, later restaging the search as a performance of music and light in New York’s Central Park. His journey, both real and simulated, offers a baseline for time in this exhibition. Still other artworks imply movement or narrative within single images; in these, historical styles and events are ruptured, collaged and re-contextualized, becoming portals into other worlds. Goshka Macuga’s tapestry, Death of Marxism, Women of All Lands Unite, 2013, weaves voyeuristic pictures of women with an image of Karl Marx’s grave, transforming the women from passive objects to active — albeit fictional — political participants in a history that usually excludes them. The title of the work invokes the famous communist rallying cry engraved on Marx’s tombstone, “Workers of all

lands unite,” and replaces the word “workers” with “women.” Macuga thus shifts the slogan from a communist call to action to end class struggle to a feminist one calling for the end of sexist oppression. The works in A Journey That Wasn’t share a sense of slowness, depicting forms and images evolving within narrow sets of conditions. By isolating and manipulating individual moments, the artworks included provide space for contemplation offering questions rather than answers about how we assemble meaning in our world. A Journey That Wasn’t will be on view in The Broad’s first floor galleries through early 2019 and is accessible with free general admission tickets. Public programs associated with the collection exhibition will be announced at a later date. The museum’s third floor galleries will continue to show a robust and changing selection of works from the Broad collection.
