Located on the corner of 7th and Olive Street in Downtown L.A., NoMad Los Angeles, created by the Sydell Group, continues in the spirit of the New York flagship by taking residence in a historic landmark, Giannini Place. Formerly known as the original Bank of Italy, NoMad Los Angeles features 241 rooms, a casually elegant restaurant and bar, a library, an all-day Italian inspired café, a formal dining room, and a rooftop pool that offers sweeping views of the city and the Downtown Los Angeles skyline. Award-winning Chef Daniel Humm and Restaurateur Will Guidara of New York’s Eleven Madison Park, which currently tops The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, provide all food and beverage, offering a refined, yet approachable menu complemented by a distinguished wine and cocktail list. It is the culinary duo’s first project outside of New York, and they are thrilled to bring their hospitality to Los Angeles. Designed by French architect and designer Jacques Garcia, each of the 241 rooms at NoMad Los Angeles looks to Italy for inspiration – a nod to the building’s storied beginning. NoMad Los Angeles is the designer’s first project in the city. The guest rooms’ color palette is drawn from the property’s fully restored gold and blue Italianate ceiling located in the lobby. Each room is appointed with custom designed furnishings and original artwork from Paris / New York-based design studio be-poles with many also featuring freestanding pedestal bathtubs. Much of the building’s Neoclassical style, such as its Doric columns, ornate golden ceiling, and marble floors, have been preserved and incorporated into the new design. The original vault that once housed 12,000 safety deposit boxes and 50ton door have been kept intact alongside the coffered ceiling and square pilaster columns topped with Corinthian Capitals located in the lobby and restaurant areas. In the midst of a cultural renaissance, Downtown Los Angeles provides some of the city’s most interesting dining, shopping, and entertainment, all within walking distance from NoMad Los Angeles. It is conveniently situated offering easy access to Hollywood and Santa Monica. Located at the east end of the lobby, the Coffee Bar is modeled after the iconic 300-year-old Caffè Florian in Venice, Italy. In the morning, Executive Pastry Chef Mark Welker offers a variety of pastries to pair with coffee. Guests may enjoy their selections inside at standing tables, outside in café seating, or to-go. Additional menu items are available for a light lunch or casual aperitivo later in the day. Custom mirrors slide back in the evening to reveal a full bar, transitioning the room into an intimate aperitif/digestif cocktail destination by night.

Mirroring the spirit of the NoMad Library in New York, the Library features an eclectic literary collection as well as a stuffed peacock and pheasant by award-winning, downtown LA-based taxidermist Allis Markham. Tables are available to hotel guests throughout the day, while at night, it transforms into an elegant cocktail destination. Appointed in richly textured fabrics, the low-lit Parlour is located west of the Library and available for á la carte dining as well as groups. Next to the Library, the all-day Lobby restaurant features New American dishes such as the Chickpea Panisse, Cobb Salad, Lasagnette, Chicken Milanese and Milk & Honey ice cream sandwich. Located beside the main lobby, the Giannini Bar is named after Bank of Italy Founder Amadeo Giannini, who originally commissioned the building for his corporate headquarters. The seasonal bar program features a wide selection of classic and signature cocktails crafted by Bar Director Leo Robitschek that are reflective of the downtown setting and rhythm of the local markets. Robitschek also directs the beverage program at NoMad Bar in New York, which this year was ranked #3 on the World’s 50 Best Bars list and #1 in North America. Sets to open this Spring, the stunning rooftop features an outdoor café and cocktail bar with light bites and beverages for dining and drinking poolside. In addition to sweeping views of the city, the roof also features eye-catching artwork and details including a replica of the central sculpture found in the iconic Il Parco di Mostri – “Park of Monsters,” a 16th-century monumental complex located in northern Lazio in Italy. If you have not yet visited this new fantastic addition in Downtown LA, rush to enjoy a historic moment in the center of the future of LA.

This year, the construction of the highly anticipated Frank Gehry-designed Downtown Los Angeles Grand Avenue Project will start. The Related Companies announced the selection of Los Angeles-based AECOM, as construction manager for The Grand, an amazing mixed-use development across from The Broad museum and Walt Disney Concert Hall. A visionary public-private partnership, guided by the Los Angeles Grand Avenue Authority, The Grand is designed to revitalize Downtown Los Angeles’ cultural and civic core with a mix of commercial, retail, cultural and residential units featuring grand public spaces and world-class architecture. Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, The Grand will include a dynamic mix of retail, hotel, dining, entertainment and residential opportunities anchored by a central public plaza above five levels of parking. The 209,000-square foot space will include destination restaurants, and shopping spread among a series of landscaped open terraces along with a movie theater complex and a twenty-story, 314-room Equinox Hotel. After several proposed plans for the past couple of years, the residential component will now be a 436 unit, 39-story tower. Related has already invested $240 million in the success of the Grand Avenue Project, including Grand Park, Downtown Los Angeles’ iconic public, and cultural space; developed The Emerson, the first new residential building in the Bunker Hill neighborhood in decades; and helped to facilitate the acclaimed Broad museum. Bunker Hill will finally become the neighborhood it deserves to be. When completed, The Grand will be a great new addition to Downtown LA.

HOTEL FIGUEROA

Reclaiming its well-established legacy as an independent cultural hub in Downtown Los Angeles, the historic Hotel Figueroa reopened on February 19 paying tribute to its rich history and melds its original 1920s Spanish Colonial splendor with custom and contemporary accents that celebrate the hotel’s deep roots in Los Angeles. Conveniently located in the flourishing South Park district, Hotel Figueroa was re-imagined by the award-winning West Coast-based design firm Studio Collective who has skillfully captured the hotel’s fierce spirit and preserved its progressive past while seamlessly marrying it to its present glory as a glamorous retreat amid a captivating metropolis. The independently owned hotel is re-imagined to exceed the expectations of a new generation of guests, with vibrant accommodations including 268 redesigned guest rooms and suites, 10,000 square feet of event space, original artworks from Los Angeles based artists and a refurbished pool deck with a lush outdoor “living room” lounge. Guests can also discover new and exciting culinary experiences created by four-time James Beard award nominee Chef Casey Lane along with craft cocktail mastermind Dushan Zaric. Inspired by their Western Mediterranean travels, the dynamic duo has created the hotel’s signature restaurant Breva and Veranda, an al fresco poolside dining experience, as well as three alluring bars including Bar Figueroa, Rick’s and the reservations-only, Bar Alta. “The re-imagined Hotel Figueroa is an enclave that embodies the history, culture and unique personality of Downtown Los Angeles while offering a luxurious yet unpretentious location where travelers and locals can gather and unwind,” said Clay Andrews, general manager of Hotel Figueroa. Hotel Figueroa opened in 1926 as an exclusive women’s hostelry by the YWCA, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Managed by one of the industry’s first female General Managers, Maude Bouldin, this hotel initially served as a haven for female travelers.

male international leaders. The hotel evolved with the times, replacing communal bathrooms with ensuite bathrooms. In 1952, a large outdoor swimming pool and pool deck were added, establishing Hotel Figueroa as a modern hotel for business and leisure travel, as well as outdoor events. In 1978, Swede businessman, Uno Thimansson took over as the leaseholder and transformed the entire property into an exotic Moroccan-themed oasis that served as an affordable independent hotel for tourists and remained a unique hangout for locals for over 36 years. Through all of these adaptations, the strong architectural elements of grandeur, safety, and inclusiveness served to keep the hotel viable and relevant. Today, the thriving arts and dining scene, along with the growing demand for hotel rooms in DTLA, inspired the newest owners, GreenOak Real Estate and Urban Lifestyle Hotel Group to undergo a comprehensive revitalization to restore the hotel’s original Spanish Colonial splendor. Hotel Figueroa blends both old and new, creating a space that is respectful of its past and yet undoubtedly contemporary – a property that is both inspired by its history and inspiring to those who walk its halls. Hotel Figueroa offers 268 guest-rooms and suites designed to evoke a residential feel that is artistically elevated. Tapping the masterminds at the award-winning design firm Studio Collective Hotel Figueroa maintains the original floor plan of the building and offers several different room types, each with its unique charm and personality. Having worked with some of the most coveted destinations in hospitality such as The Goodland in Santa Barbara and The Bungalow at The Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, Studio Collective fitted the rooms with a combination of custom designed furnishings and hand-sourced goods, infusing the rooms with a contemporary atmosphere.

Hotel Figueroa’s 23 Artist Series Suites and thirty-three Writer Series Suites offers guests a wide array of upgraded comforts and accommodations complimented by a collection of books by an LAbased author or artists in partnership with The Last As years passed, Hotel Figueroa broadened its Bookstore, California’s largest used and new book scope and retained its progressive cultural and po- and record store located in DTLA. luxurious features such as a secret door leading to an exclusive dining/cocktail area, private terrace, insuite dining room, private stairways leading to the pool, or Juliet balconies overlooking Figueroa Street. Hotel Figueroa offers numerous services and amenities for guests to experience all that DTLA has to offer including the expanding art scene, exhilarating nightlife, professional sporting events and memorable concerts as well as dining at the most exciting restaurants in town. Hotel guests can take advantage of the hotel’s sleep program: a science-based design offering the best sleep guests can achieve away from home. The Hotel Tesla house car for complimentary transportation within DTLA, upon availability, two Tesla Charging Stations and one universal connection for EV’s on the property. Definitely a taste of the future in history.

Thirty-seven ways to see Downtown LA is the premise of DTLA/37, a book from the ongoing series by En Ville Publishing. Each book features 37 pieces on its neighborhood’s residents, oddities, public places and local artists. While 37 may sound like a curious, random number, it is also the temperature, in Celsius, of the human body. On a countdown from 37 to 1, each section revolves around a single number and is accompanied by stunning photography and meaningful statistics, all presented in a unique design. The book offers a fascinating way to discover the neighborhood, combining poetic prose encounters with local residents, photography, and numbers.

On March 9th, The Music Center welcomed the return of The Joffrey Ballet to Los Angeles for a contemporary rendition of Shakespeare’s timeless classic with the West Coast premiere of Romeo & Juliet. Part of the 15th season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center (Dance at The Music Center), this critically acclaimed retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic tale is set amid the tumult of 20th century Italy, beginning with Mussolini-era 1930s and spanning three decades of political strife. Choreographed by Krzysztof Pastor, The Joffrey Ballet dancers will be accompanied by Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic 1935 score, performed live by the Dance at The Music Center orchestra, with modern costumes and set design by Tatyana Van Walsum. A story relevant to generations past and present, Shakespeare’s cautionary tale of love serves as a modern metaphor for the influence of society on individual freedom. Although the personal journeys of Romeo & Juliet are integral to the tale, this is a love story within a definite social and political context the collective identity of the group is considered more important, and the lovers are destined for tragedy. The performances used a multimedia video backdrop to depict three different political eras of 20th century Italy, mapping the journey through a contemporary lens, as the

DONNA ISHAM AN ODE TO FEMINITY by

Petra Wright

In honor of International Women’s Month, GDCA Gallery is proud to feature figurative artist Donna Isham. Isham’s textural and evocative series of female nudes seeks to celebrate the “beauty, power and emotion” of the female form. Using oil, acrylic, charcoal, and pastel, resulting in a study in contrast that combines to sublime harmony. Her paintings are fearless and raw while being classic and sophisticated. They are alluring and seductive, yet delicate, timeless and pure. Isham’s ‘Ode to femininity.’ Drawing inspiration from the Impressionist, Expressionist and early Cubist art movements, Isham intends to present an authentic natural beauty, and intrinsic power that the artist attributes to women’s “inherent courage and compassion for humanity.” Donna Isham’s paintings will be on display at GDCA Gallery through March 31st. An Artist reception will be held at the gallery Saturday, March 24th from 6-10pm. For more information on the artist, please contact GDCA at (323) 309-2875 or email Petra@GDCAgallery.com

MEDMEN

Everybody was excited when California became one of the nine states allowing recreational marijuana. We got more excited when MedMen opened its doors in Downtown LA. MedMen started with a simple vision; cannabis as a consumer product. It is a simple idea with profound consequences for how marijuana is cultivated, produced and marketed. Quality standards matter, best practices matter, brand reputation matters. Today, MedMen is the most dominant cannabis enterprise in the emerging legal marijuana industry. Their professionals are retail experts, marketing experts, financing experts, regulatory affairs experts, agricultural and operations experts, and yes cannabis experts. What distinguishes their team is that they are hyper-focused on running a successful business that serves consumers and communities. MedMen operates scalable, highly-efficient growing facilities using the latest in agronomic technology and sustainable techniques, and our manufacturing facilities use standards comparable to those in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. They do not run pot shops; they manage class-leading retail stores that happen to sell marijuana and marijuana products. MedMen operates several dispensaries in the most strategic markets in the country, and they continue to grow. Most dispensaries have an underground shack vibe, MedMen is modern, urban, and friendly.

On Saturday, March 24, thousands of runners, walkers, and dogs (but no cars!) will fill the streets of downtown Los Angeles in support of an essential community resource, California Hospital Medical Center. This fun family event welcomes social dogs at no extra cost! The race features “one of the best 5K courses” in LA, passing by the Staples Center, L.A. LIVE, FIGat7th, The Bloc, and more. The 5K concludes with a post-race festival (at 1401 S. Grand Ave.) featuring free Zumba, adult health screenings, children’s activities, and a doggie costume contest. Festival entrance and events are free. And come hungry! Our favorite breakfast features pancakes or burritos for only $5-$7, and this year we’re adding a coffee garden where for a small donation, you can get your caffeine fix, too! This year, 100% of the funds raised from the 5K will help us reach our goal to help the hospital build a state-of-the-art, four-story patient care tower. As DTLA grows, we need space to expand critical departments, including the only full-service trauma and emergency center in downtown and our neonatal intensive care unit, which cares for the tiniest, most fragile newborns. For more information, please visit www.HeartoftheCity5K. org. #LAHeart5K Whether you are a walker, runner, or just stopping by for the food and fun, you’ll have a great time!
