Music Notes…

Rehearsal Recap 04-25-2022 What a great rehearsal on Monday! A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, both inperson and on Zoom. Additionally, I want to take a moment and recognize everyone who sat during some of our final songs during the end of rehearsal. As we've talked about previously, my vision for the chorus is one where we can spend our time wisely in rehearsal and focus on our artistry and how we can use our music to tell stories and impact our audiences. This is only possible if we actually know our notes and words to such an extent that we can essentially take them for granted and shift our focus elsewhere. Those who chose to sit made a conscious choice to

say "It's okay that I don't know the words and notes right now - I'll be able to contribute next week." This was half a dozen of our best singers choosing to be a 0 or a +1 by choosing not to sing that week. And the result was some of the best singing we've done since we returned in person - and I know that because of that, once those guys are ready to rejoin the risers for those songs, it will just be even better!!! Major takeaways of Monday included singing more smoothly with a larger vision of each line, rather than note-by-note. Additionally, when we choose to engage with the music, regardless of how deep our story is, it makes our singing better - full stop. When we choose to "phone it in", that's what the singing sounds like; when we instead choose to bring facial engagement, as well as emotional, it's just a better chorus sound. I look forward to continuing that in the coming weeks and months. Next week, we will continue our work on Softly, Hallelujah, and What a Wonderful World. We will also bring our smooth singing to Caroline, Irish Blessing, O Canada, and Star Spangled Banner. And finally, as we said last week, everyone is to be off-paper on Bare Necessities this week - we WILL be working on that song Monday! (And one more reminder: How High the Moon is to be off-paper two weeks after that - 05/16) Thank you all for the hard work and fun times - see you Monday! -Chris
