Notes of Interest‌. AL PHILLIPS REMEMBERED by Dick Wheeler Alan "Al" Phillips passed away a few days ago. His body was found in his Yarmouth home on the morning of February 8. At the time of this writing there has been no obituary in the paper. Al who sang tenor joined the chapter in the sixties with his quartet whose members were Tom Booth, Mahlon "Mick" Lary, and Elford Messer. all worked at Fairchild. The called themselves the Atlantic Clippers. His next quartet was the Northern Lights which included Dick Green, John Mygatt, and Wally Trask. Next came several versions of the "infamous" Sandpipers. Al and Greenie kept this quartet going from the mid sixties well into the seventies. The baris were Mygatt and Hermie Lovendale. The basses were Dick Miller and Wally Trask. One of these combinations won a Division Novice Quartet contest. Al served a term as chapter president, but his most famous contribution was chairing six "MUSICAL BEAN SUPPERS'". All were held at the Woodfords Congregational Church. Al would stand up a business meeting with a yellow legal pad and spend half an hour designating assignments even down to the guys who were washing pots and pans. Those unfortunate guys who drew that assignment were called "The Pearl Fishers" I believe Al was born in England. He never lost his accent. During the last two years he attended many of the Old Timers Luncheons at Pat's.

Treasurer Needed By Larry Bean Downeasters, I am announcing my intention to retire as Treasurer at the close of this calendar year. I will not be submitting my name for the officer's slate for the 2012 calendar year. I believe it would be better for you as the new treasurer to have a thorough understanding of how things work before you are asked to assume the duties, rather than to be thrust into the role. If you step up to the plate now to be the new treasurer for next year, you will get a year's worth of training and will feel completely comfortable by the time it becomes officially yours. Your training will start by spending a day with me (soon) doing the 2010 calendar year taxes, which will give you a thorough understanding of the scope of the Downeasters income and expenditures and how to fill out the forms. It will continue by setting up an environment where you will be able to track all finances in Quicken for the remainder of the year, simply by mirroring what I do and asking clarifying questions when needed. At Clam Festival time you will meet with me and each of the officers to go through the fiscal year budget creation process, learn how to set up the new budget year in Quicken, and continue to mirror the inflows and outflows. By next January it should be second nature. I will do the 2011 taxes with you, and still be available as a resource when help or guidance is needed. Please do not hesitate, reply directly to me (lbean@rsu1.org) with your interest. Thank you!
