Downeasters Chorus 2023

We have talked about Everyone In Harmony (EIH) as the path that your Board and Music Team wants for The Downeasters. I'd like to make it official. Your current Board voted this past Wednesday to become a mixed chorus! The Downeasters are embarking on a journey to allow all genders and all (auditioned) voices to sing with us. One cannot say for sure what challenges lie ahead. But we know a future without change is not bright. I can tell you, when I

Notes… ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

was at the International Convention in Charlotte this summer, I spoke with the leadership of several mixed choruses. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and they were the rock stars of the convention. Energy followed them wherever they went.

Personally, I am very excited about our EIH agenda. In many ways it is an extension of the culture we know today, embracing all walks of life, befriending anyone who walks through the door. I ask, is EIH not "brotherhood" at its core, just with fewer limitations and more inclusivity? A few weeks ago I was sitting at a restaurant next to a family. A young woman (30s?) was in a wheelchair; a small person from birth with mobility challenges and a high voice. Highly functional notwithstanding her handicaps. I daydreamed she had qualified to perform with us, and showed up every week, fulfilled that she had found a home to express her musical talent. All persons, all genders, no judgement other than that classic barbershop question "what part do you sing?"

We will need to be more open-minded. We will need to become comfortable with new terminology. In return, I believe The Downeasters will learn and thrive, in both membership and in music. If you are on-board with EIH, invite a new guest! If you are unsure of EIH, give us a year to craft an impression. If you are not an active member, come back and help us fulfill this vision.

Downeasters Chorus 2023

Thank you Mike, our Administration, and the Music Leadership team for supporting EIH.

Will this change the character of the Chapter? – maybe – but if so, I truly believe from my experiences with The Maine Idea that it will be in a positive way.

One thing I can attest to, having been in an all-male top ten District quartet and now being in a mixed quartet with similar success, is that this change will in no way diminish but instead will absolutely enhance our ability to make beautiful (barbershop) music.

Thank You Marshall and Glenn

On behalf of those who attended Saturday night's excellent installation dinner at Rachel's on the Green I'd like to thank Marshal and Glenn for organizing the event! I've heard rumors that Marshall was so busy making sure that things went well that he forgot to eat! (I did see a beer in his hand at one point...)

We say this a lot but that doesn't make it any less true -- there is an incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make the chapter operate. Like it or not, it doesn't go unnoticed!

Thanks Marshall and Glenn!
