A SLOW RIDE TO SHOW SOLIDARITY FOR DAR CYCLISTS

CEO OF SWISS NATIONAL PARK REACHED THE PEAK OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO

More than 400 male and female cyclists and joggers of various ethnicities, abilities and ages participated in the 18th edition of Dar Cycle Caravan that took place on Sunday 28th November 2021 at Mnazi Moja Grounds in Dar es Salaam. The event was again organized by Umma wa Wapanda Baisikeli (UWABA) in conjunction with the European Union (EU) in Tanzania as part of creating awareness on environmental protection and marking the end of a campaign, "Resilience to Climate Change''. As is customary after the caravan, there were raffle draws in which several participants won 400 reflective jackets, 400 recycled water bottles, 150 helmets, 6 normal bikes and 3 hand bikes.

Rudolf Michael Haller, the Director of the Swiss National Park successfully made it to the peak of the highest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro. Haller, who was accompanied by his wife Ms. Barbara Haller, said that he is happy that he has accomplished his lifetime dream of coming to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.” This will now be recorded in my diary and for sure I will be your goodwill ambassador in promoting Mount Kilimanjaro in Switzerland,’ said Haller. Haller, the Director of the only National Park in Switzerland, was in Tanzania for the special mission of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, which took him five days to accomplish. Assistant Conservation Commissioner and Commanding Officer of the Kilimanjaro National Park, Angela Nyaki received them at Marangu gate and exchanged ideas on how best these two parks can work together as well as encourage more mountain climbers from Switzerland.

AIR TANZANIA ORDERS NEW BOEING FREIGHTER AND PASSENGER JETS

EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY LAUNCHES NEW INTRA-REGIONAL TOURISM DRIVE

Boeing and the United Republic of Tanzania announced an order for a 787-8 Dreamliner, a 767-300 Freighter and two 737 MAX jets at the 2021 Dubai Airshow. The airplanes will be operated by Air Tanzania, the national flag-carrier of Tanzania, to expand service from the country to new markets across Africa, Asia and Europe. The order, valued at more than $726 million at list prices, was previously unidentified on the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website. Based in Dar es Salaam, the carrier will expand its current fleet of 787s, leveraging the new 737s for its regional network and the 767 Freighter to capitalize on Africa’s burgeoning cargo demand.

The East African Community (EAC) has launched the EAC Regional and Domestic Tourism Media Campaign set to publicize national and regional tourist attraction sites and services, aiming to stimulate and develop intra-regional travel. Launched this week, the “Tembea Nyumbani”, or “Visit Home” campaign seeks to attract East African citizens to travel in their own countries, then around the region, in an effort to revive domestic and regional tourism across the East African region, amid the COVID -19 pandemic. The campaign is set to run for three weeks, from December 1, 2021. It is part of the implementation of the EAC Tourism Marketing Strategy and EAC Recovery Plan supported by the German Development Agency, GIZ.

mankind in the world. Three separate tracks of a smallbrained upright- walking early hominid, Australopithecus Afarensis, a creature about 1.2 to 1.4 meters high, were found. Imprints of these are displayed in the Olduvai museum. More advanced descendants of Laetoli’s hominids were found further north, buried in the layers of the I00 metres deep Olduvai Gorge. Excavations, mainly by the archaeologists, Louis and Mary Leakey, yielded four different kinds of hominid, showing a gradual increase in brain size and in the complexity of their stone tools. The first skull of Zinjanthropus commonly known as ‘Nutcracker Man’, who lived about 1.7 million years ago, were found here. The excavation sites have been preserved for the public viewing and word continues during the dry season, coordinated by the Tanzania government's department of antiquities.

forest rim where they find the most suitable food. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dikdik and the rare mountain reedbuck. Jackals thrive in the crater and bat eared foxes live in the short grass areas. Predatory animals in the Ngorongoro Crater like leopards, lions, cheetahs, several cats, live off the abundant wildlife; large packs of hyenas roam the Ngorongoro crater, making their own kills and scavenging from others. Lions in particular are abundant in the Ngorongoro Crater. Thanks to the antipoaching patrols, the black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater are relatively safe and the numbers are increasing with time. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing the rhino in its natural environment. Birdlife in the Ngorongoro Crater is superb. The mixture of forest, canyons, grassland plains, lakes and marshes provided habitats for a wide range of birdlife.

TANZANIA HOSTED 1st EAC REGIONAL TOURISM EXPO Promotion of Resilient Tourism for Inclusive Socio-economic Development The 1st East African Community Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) 2021 was held from 9th to 11th, at TGT grounds in Arusha, Tanzania. The United Republic of Tanzania in conjunction with the EAC Secretariat hosted a three-day Expo, which was later followed by familiarization trips for semi-hosted international buyers and media to some of the iconic tourist sites like Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi, Mafia, Zanzibar, Kilwa and Pugu Forest Hills from 12th to 16th October. As a region, East Africa is endowed with a unique combination of tourist attractions comprising tropical beaches, abundant wildlife in natural habitats, scenic beauty, mountains and a geographically diverse landscape that spark imagination."

T

he theme of the Expo was “Promotion of Resilient Tourism for Inclusive Socioeconomic Development” The theme was developed due to the need to develop the tourism sector in a sustainable manner following the devastating impact on the sector by the COVID-19 pandemic. The travel and tourism sector, globally was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic more than any other economic sector. The overarching objective of the EARTE 2021 was to promote EAC 30

as a single tourism destination, provide a platform for tourism service providers’ business to business (B2B) engagements, create awareness on tourism investment opportunities and address the challenges affecting the tourism and wildlife sectors in the region. The EARTE 2021 comprised exhibitions by the tourism service providers, speed networking and B2B meetings and seminars on tourism and wildlife sub-themes. In respect to the tourism sector,

According to the Guest of Honour the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr). Peter Mathuki, while opening the expo on 9th October, 2021 he said that, “the EAC region lost close to 70% of international tourist arrivals in 2020 coupled with massive losses in tourism earnings and tourism related jobs. Similarly, wildlife 32

conservation in the region suffered a major blow from the pandemic through loss of conservation revenue most of which is generated through tourists visiting the protected areas and wildlife conservancies across the region. The “EARTE 2021” was the perfect event in reviving the EAC tourism following the unprecedented decline caused by COVID-19. Also, EARTE will bolster intraregional tourism in addition to international tourism through promotion of the tourism product offerings for the EAC citizens. The event was closed on 11th October, 2021 by the Honourable Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Zanzibar’s President and the Chairman

of the Revolutionary Council by welcoming international buyers and media to visit and explore the natural beauty, historical heritage and investment opportunities available in Zanzibar and Tanzania at large. He added by saying that tourism has been an integral component of the Blue Economy policies that have been formulated by the Zanzibar government, by making use of ocean resources for economic growth, improve livelihood, and job creation while preserving the ocean ecosystem for the present and future generation. these sub-themes revolved around aspects such as tourism resilience and crisis management, digital tourism marketing, development of multi-destination tourism packages and tourism investment opportunities and incentives. On the other hand, wildlife related subthemes include Combating Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade and Economic value of wildlife in the region.

anzibar is the semiautonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site. Portuguese invasion and control of the Swahili Coast in the late 16th century ended the golden age of the archipelago, although the Omani Arabs returned to power less than a century later. Today, many of the winding streets

and high townhouses of old Stone Town remain unchanged and visitors can walk between the sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders, the Portuguese fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city. Day-long spice tours to working plantations offer visitors the chance to observe the cultivation of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that have made the island famous. The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast, and although the beaches of Mangapwani, where slave caves are visible at low tide and nearby Bububu are less than half an hour’s drive away, a night or two spent on the east or north cost

KNOWN AS THE SPICE ISLAND, THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR ON AFRICA’S EAST COAST IS BURSTING WITH CULTURE AND HISTORY, SEEMINGLY AT ODDS WITH ITS IDYLLIC GEOGRAPHY OF WHITE-SAND BEACHES WITH PALMS SWAYING LAZILY IN THE SEA BREEZE. TOGETHER THIS MAKES ZANZIBAR A FABULOUS PLACE TO EXPLORE AS WELL AS A DREAM TO RELAX AND UNWIND.

is well worth the extra hour it takes to drive there. That said, the Chole Island Marine Park just off Stone Town – and nearby Prison, Grave, and Snake Islands – make a refreshing day-trip and a good break from exploring the winding passageways of the old city. On the south coast of Zanzibar lies the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island. Roads to the southeast coast take visitors through the Jozani Forest, home

to Zanzibar’s rare Red Colobus monkeys and a number of other primate and small antelope species.

THE ISLANDS OF ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar has many offshore islands, which provide a stunning location for a day trip or a longer stay. Boats to any of the islands off Zanzibar or Pemba can be hired easily from local fishermen. In Stone Town, ask at the ‘big tree’ opposite Mercury’s restaurant on the seafront, or arrange a day trip with one of the tour companies listed in this guide.

CHAPWANI ISLAND

A slightly more upmarket choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave island, is the site of a luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar and restaurant are permitted. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims of the World War One attack on the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg are also buried here. It’s interesting to wander around the graveyard

BAWE ISLAND

Bawe Island has some of excellent snorkeling spots. Around a 30-minute boat ride and slightly more expensive than the boat to Prison Island, it is much less visited. In 1870, the island was used to anchor the first telegraph cables to Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. A further line was run across to Stone Town, into the old Extelcoms building, now the Zanzibar Serena Inn. If complete isolation and privacy is what you are after, then Bawe Tropical Island is the perfect place to stay. There are 15 private cottages scattered along the beach front, all with breathtaking panormaic views of the ocean, and all tastefully decorated in soft colours to enhance the relaxed pace of life. The beach is excellent at low tide, with unusual stone formations, and there is some

good snorkelling to be had on the island’s reef.

PRISON ISLAND

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is one of the most popular destinations for day trips from Stone Town. Just a short boat ride away, the island offers excellent snorkeling, a nature trail, small beach and the unusual attraction of a sanctuary for giant tortoises. Despite its name, the closest the island has come to actually being used as a prison was by its first owner, a wealthy Arab who sent unruly slaves there for discipline. In 2006, many of the islands old buildings were restored, and Changuu Private Island Paradise was opened, offering 15 deluxe cottages all on the seafront, affording maximum seclusion and privacy. There are also 12 standard rooms in the old quarantine area, with fantastic views back across to Stone Town. If swimming and snorkelling in the crystal blue waters gets too much, have a paddle in the freshwater swimming pool, or hit the ball around on the floodlit tennis court. Mathews’ restaurant offers excellent seafood lunches, and 4 course dinners, all overlooking the restored prison ruins.

CHUMBE ISLAND

Six kilometres south of Stone Town, surrounded by pristine coral reef, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism projects. In 1994 the reef surrounding Chumbe Island was named Tanzania’s first Marine National Park. The island itself, covered with lush mangrove forest, is a designated forest reserve. Visitors can come for the day to snorkel over the incredible coral reef, home to over 370 species of fish, turtles and dolphins. To experience Chumbe Island properly, stay the night in one of the seven ‘ecobandas’ that nestle in the forest. Each is a two-storey, private cottage constructed out of local materials and decorated with shells, driftwood and colourful local fabrics. Water and energy on Chumbe are self-sustaining and provided by nature - the roofs of the bandas and the education centre have been designed to catch and filter rainwater, which is then heated by solar power. The magic of Zanzibar Island is that it is a multi-faceted destination, offering a unique blend of idyllic beaches, intriguing history, cultural diversity, tasty cuisine, exotic spices, and rich flora and fauna.

BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU 2021 EDITION A Celebration of a very Young fruity French Wine By Michel Lanfrey “Beaujolais nouveau is a true artisan wine experience, a Gamay that has a red dress and fruit flavor. Its main qualities reside in the exuberance of its youth and its fragrance and delicacy, which are obtained by picking the grapes at a specific time of maturity. Only experienced winemakers can choose this key moment”

ollowing our yearly French tradition of celebrating this young wine web called “Primeur”, the fourth week of November this year at the residence of The French Ambassador again on 25 November, a colorful event attended with a sum of over 510 guests prevailed. This year Chef Allankalee and his staff have specially come from Zanzibar Melia Hotel to prepare and present the special cold cuts, fromages, saucissons,pâtés, and as well prepared locally some special gastronomy dishes with the help of assistants chefs from Samantar. For this event, many delicacies were presented in an elegant way. Just to give an idea beside the traditional bread baguettes and rolls from Epi d’Or, Cold Cuts & Cheese selection with dry fruits and nuts; as well a freshly prepared avocado, tomato, orange salad, and mustard dressing, green salad, baby spinach with apple, bruschettas, pineapple and tomato chutney, aubergine caviar, beef salad … This year we don’t know how many bottles were produced and sold and transported from France toward the whole world, due to the enormous disruption of the COVID19 pandemic and transports were not made easy, but we succeeded and some 600 tickets were sold and over 510 people turned up to this fantastic yearly event. As usual this event is characterized for its very informal nature featuring traditional food directly from France with lots of varieties of French wines including Barton & Guestier wines were selected with and served after 10 am as brought to Tanzania by Red & White.

The committee has become so acquainted with preparing this event and all the cumbersome administrative endeavors that this time it has really delivered beyond expectations! Of course, with the help of the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise. The Committee is very proud of the outcome. GROWING AND NURTURING YOUR BUSINESS 5 Tips Every Entrepreneur Ought To Know By Forbes Writers

B

usinesses have no formula, but you can’t deny that there are some things that every entrepreneur should be keen about if they want to succeed in the long run. As hard and rough as the business road is, following these tips is crucial. HERE I BRING TO YOU 5 TIPS THAT EVERY ENTREPRENEUR OUGHT TO KNOW: 1. RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET Take the time to do market research and really listen 64

2. REALLY LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS Truly listen and empathize with your clients. Everyone is so interested in getting their own personal message across, that no one pauses for a moment to actually listen and hear the root of the problem or pain. Believe in listening 80% of the time, clarifying 10% of the time, and responding wholeheartedly and intentionally, is the remaining 10% of the time. 3. LEARN WITH A TEAM Most leaders settle for learning by themselves. They read a book or attend a conference by themselves. Good leaders learn with the help of a mentor. A coach can come alongside a leader and help the leader see things from a different perspective. The best leaders learn with a team. An old proverb teaches that where there are many advisors, there is much success.

THE RIGHT APPROACH CAN MEAN A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN BUSINESS. PART OF SETTING UP A LONGTERM PLAN IS KNOWING WHERE THE PROBLEM SPOTS ARE, AS WELL AS WHICH BUSINESS PHILOSOPHIES WORK BETTER FOR WHICH INDUSTRIES. 4. FOCUS ON WHAT MAKES YOU THRIVE Be unapologetic and relentless with what makes you thrive. Many times, we are influenced from the outside world, and cloud our own desires for the sake of those around us. The sooner you are able to grasp this nugget, the sooner it will drastically change your world. 5. NETWORK WITH EXPERIENCED EXECS Take any opportunity to network and learn from more experienced executives, as well as to be mentored and coached by some of them. Further, exposure to specific meetings, boardroom discussion, and strategic planning would be utterly beneficial.

This gives you not only the opportunity to plunge into the Indian Ocean straight after your safari, but also to be submerged in a unique display of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a naturally fascinating setting. Saadani is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the Indian Ocean. Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a well-preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. Many villages are dotted around the boundaries of the park. Saadani village itself once was an important harbour-town and slave-trading centre in East Africa. Nowadays it is a small Swahili village of about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing.

Bird watchers will be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore The coastal vegetation zones range from seashore full of palm trees, through the tidal mangrove forest that form a buffer between ocean and land, to the Wami River shore where the huge sycamore fig is found. Its semi open woodlands closely resemble Selous GR, while the vast grassy area close to the tourism office is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations.

Saadani is where crab meets elephant and the roar of a lion might interrupt your tanning. All the usual suspects, such as zebra, buffalo, elephant, warthog, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbuck are present. But you also stand a high chance of capturing different types of hartebeest, the big-eyed Rondo Galago and the elusive sable antelope on camera during your jeep or walking safari. Lion, leopard and spotted hyena might be harder to find, but this makes a sighting an even greater joy.

The vast grassy area is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations Taking a boat on the Wami River will definitely add to the fun; here you are as close as one likes to get to hippo, crocodile and flamingo. Bird watchers will also be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore, such as different kinds of sandpiper, Eurasian oystercatcher and the common greenshank. On the beach you get to enjoy even more special sightings: breeding green turtles – Saadani’s beaches are one of Tanzania’s best breeding sites – with dolphins and humpback whales putting on their show in the Indian Ocean beyond. • Starting as a Game Reserve in 1962, Saadani became the 13th National Park in Tanzania in 2005. • Since the nineties several new areas have been added to the park, resulting in the Saadani ecosystem that covers 1,100 km2 (around 15 km shoreline). From south to north it stretches 69 km. • Height: the majority of the park is at sea level. Although the highest point is 350 m, most elevations don’t go beyond 40 m. • Tides: spring tides of up to 1,5 m can flow inland. • Saadani has a tropical, hot climate with an average temperature of 25-27 °C all year round (30 °C daytime, 20-24 °C night-time).

• Dry season: July – September, wet season: November – May (less rainy in December – February). • Best time to visit: June – September. • The park is accessible by road or air. • By road: 1) Dar es Salaam – Chalinze – village of Mandera (good tarmac road, 160 km/2-3 hours) then village of Mandera – Mvave Gate – Saadani National Park tourism office (rough road, 65 km/2 hours). 2) Town of Tanga – Pangani – Mkwaja Gate (earth road, 120 km/3-5 hours. 3) Dar es Salaam – Bagamoyo – Saadani • By air: several safari companies organise private flights from Dar es Salaam Zanzibar and other major Cities.

Accommodation Inside the park: one private lodge, bandas, rest house and campsites. Booking for bandas, rest house and campsites contact the Park. Outside the park: one lodge (close to the border).

What to do Game drives, boat trips, guided hiking, bird watching, sun bathing and visiting the Saadani fishing village which used to be a buzzing trading centre. Park contacts: saadani@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 346 / +255 767 536 133
