Tasting Spoon A Trendy Way to Start Your Night

Something that continues to astonish me about Korea is business turnover. It seems that clothing boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants and so on shut down and open anew overnight. Every time I go downtown I find a new restaurant that wasn’t there a few weeks ago. This makes choosing a place to eat all that harder for me, someone that tends to be afflicted by the paradox of choice— the notion that too many options can actually induce overwhelm and anxiety rather than make us happier due to the availability of variety. Thankfully, my last dining out experience dilemma was remedied by going into a familiar looking place that I’d actually never been to, Tasting Spoon. And I’m glad I did. 한국에 대해서 계속 필자를 놀라게 하는 것은 바로 가게의 변화 이다. 옷가게, 카페, 식당 등등이 문을 닫으면 그 다음날 새로운 곳이 열린다. 매번 시내를 갈 때마다 몇 주 전만 해도 없던 새로운 식당을 발견한다. 이런 점은 선택의 역설로 인해 쉽게 괴로워하

는 필자 같은 사람들이 밥 먹을 곳을 고르기가 점점 더 어려워지 게 한다. 선택의 역설이란 너무 많은 선택지가 다양성의 가능성 으로 사람들을 행복하게 해주기보다는 실제로 압도당하고 걱정 을 하게 유도한다는 것이다. 고맙게도 최근에 밥을 먹으러 나간 경험의 딜레마가 한 번도 가보지 않았지만 익숙해 보이는 그 곳, 테이스팅 스푼으로 가서 회복이 되었다. 그리고 이 곳에 가서 기 뻤다. At first, I kept wondering why the name sounded so familiar then I realized I’d seen it many times before in a different location. This is the second location of Tasting Spoon and for the newest concept they’ve partnered up with Vin Plus to develop the menu. 처음에는 왜 이름이 그렇게 익숙한 지 계속 궁금했는데 그러다가 다른 장소에서 많이 봤다는 것을 알아차렸다. 이 곳은 테이스팅 스푼의 2호점이고 새로운 컨셉을 위해 메뉴를 개발하고자 빈 플 러스와 파트너쉽을 맺고 있다.

Looks and Appearances 식당 내부와 분위기 Upon walking in, the newest location of Tasting Spoon welcomes patrons with its light and airy interior. The layout feels very homey with an open kitchen in the middle and the abundance of cabinets. Yes, cabinets! When was the last time you saw cabinets in any restaurant? This detail gives a very chic and contemporary appeal to this eatery. Overall, the decor exudes a modern take on traditional French style with its mint and beige motif. I especially appreciated that they had beautiful lockers. Utilitarian? Probably not. Très chic? Indeed. I presume they are rarely utilized by patrons, but nonetheless it’s a charming and quirky touch. My friend and I went on a Friday early evening before downtown started buzzing with the weekend energy and the restaurant was full of diners eager to get their night started. 안으로 들어서면 테이스팅 스푼의 새로운 장소가 밝고 넓은 공간 의 인테리어로 손님들을 맞이한다. 내부의 레이아웃은 가운데의 오픈 키친과 많은 락커가 있어 매우 편안한 느낌이다. 그렇다, 락 커가 있다! 그 어떠한 식당에서도 마지막으로 락커를 본 것이 언 제인지. 이러한 디테일이 이 식당에 매우 세련되고 현대적인 느 낌을 주고 있다. 전체적으로 실내장식은 민트색과 베이지색을 이 용하여 전통적인 프랑스식 스타일을 바탕으로 한 현대적인 느낌 을 물씬 풍긴다. 특히나 아름다운 개인 락커가 있어서 좋았다. 실 용적이냐고 묻는다면 아마도 아니라고 하겠지만 매우 멋있었냐 고 한다면 실제로 그랬다. 사람들이 가끔씩 사용한다고 생각하지 만 그럼에도 불구하고 매력적이고 별난 마무리였다. 친구나 필자 는 시내가 주말의 에너지로 들끓기 전, 금요일 이른 저녁에 방문 했다. 테이스팅 스푼은 밤을 시작하고자 하는 식당의 분위기로 가득했다. Eats 음식 After perusing the menu, my friend and I decided to treat ourselves to a carb feast. We opted for pizza (half sweet potato, half pepper carnivore), the truffle oriental pasta and the shrimp pilaf. We got the best of both worlds with the pizza because the pepper half was meaty and spicy with three types of pepperoni and a generous amount of cheese and pepper flakes. This pizza is a loaded pie, sure to satisfy all the meat lovers out there. The savory of the pepperoni was complemented with the decadence of the sweet potato half. This was my first time eating the infamous Korean take on pizza, and wow. At first, my brain was confused trying to make sense of the sweetness but as I ate more, I started to really like it. was topped with crispy sweet potato slices and garnished with a sweet glaze and bacon bits. In essence, sweet potato pizza is more like dessert, and while I enjoyed it, I could only eat one slice because it’s very filling. Do I recommend it? Absolutely, but go for the half. 메뉴를 탐색한 후에 친구와 나는 탄수화물 파티를 열기로 결정했 다. 우리는 피자(반은 스위트 포테이토, 반은 페퍼 카니보어), 트 러플 오리엔탈 파스타, 새우 필라프를 선택했다. 반반 모두 최고 의 경지를 보여주었는데 페퍼는 고기가 가득하고 세가지 종류의 페퍼로니, 넉넉한 치즈, 페퍼 플레이크가 있어서 매콤한 맛이 났 다. 이 피자는 토핑이 많이 올라간 피자이고, 고기를 좋아하는 모 든 사람들을 확실히 만족시킬 것이다. 페페로니의 풍미가 나머 지 반인 고구마 피자의 타락으로 보완이 되었다. 이번에 악명높 은 한국식 피자를 처음 먹어 보았는데 놀라웠다. 처음에는 단 맛 를 납득하려고 머리가 혼란스러웠지만 더 먹어볼 수록 정말 좋아 지기 시작했다. 이 피자의 반은 바삭한 고구마 슬라이스가 토핑 으로 올라가 있었고 달콤한 글레이즈와 베이컨 조각들이 뿌려져 있었다. 본질적으로 고구마 피자는 더 디저트 같았고, 피자를 먹 으면서 한 조각 밖에 못 먹었는데 왜냐하면 그것만으로 매우 포 만감을 주는 피자였다. 이 피자를 추천하냐고 묻는다면 전적으로 추천하지만 반 판으로 시키라고 해주고 싶다. Next came the pasta and shrimp pilaf. Carbs on carbs on carbs! Who’s counting calories? Not us.The truffle pasta was the most interesting dish we had because it was very East meets West. The strong truffle flavor really came through in every bite. The spaghetti had bulgogi, mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes. This was definitely one of the better takes on fusion pasta I’ve had in Daegu. By the time we got around tasting the pilaf, we 10

had indulged quite a bit and couldn’t eat much of it, which was sad because it was so tasty. The shrimp and prawns were cooked just right. The sauce topping the dish was kind of a surprise because it was sweet upon first taste but then had a delayed kick that balanced and tied everything together perfectly. Did a food comma ensue after our eating rendezvous? Yes. Was it worth it? Of course! 다음에 나온 것은 파스타와 새우 필라프였다. 탄수화물의 끝없는 향연이었다! 누가 칼로리 따위를 계산하고 있는가? 우리는 아니 였다. 트러플 파스타는 우리가 먹은 음식 중 가장 흥미로웠는데 아주 동양적인 맛이 서양 맛을 만나게 된 것이기 때문이었다. 강 한 송로버섯의 향이 한 입 먹을 때마다 진하게 풍겨왔다. 스파게 티에는 불고기, 버섯, 가지, 애호박, 토마토가 들어가 있었다. 이 메뉴는 대구에서 먹어본 퓨전 파스타 중에 단연코 더 나은 수준 을 보여주었다. 필라프를 맛보기 시작할 때까지 꽤나 많은 양을 실컷 먹어서 필라프는 많이 먹지 못 했다. 하지만 필라프도 너무 맛있어서 슬펐다. 새우가 딱 알맞게 익었고, 위에 올라간 소스는 조금 놀라웠다. 왜냐하면 처음에 단 맛이 났지만 조금 있다가 매 운 맛이 치고 들어왔기 때문이었는데, 이 맛은 균형을 맞춰주고 완벽하게 모든 것을 다 함께 잡아주는 맛이었다. 우리가 식사를 끝내고 푸드코마에 걸렸나고 묻는다면, 그랬다. 그럴만했냐고 묻 는다면 물론이라고 답하겠다. Worth Its Salt Chill New Bar and Gallery on Daegu’s Bukseong-ro

Like most good things in life I found Sogeum Chang-go completely by accident. My cousin was in town and we were walking off dinner by taking a stroll down Bukseongro. The street is known primarily for hardware stores, workshops, and the legendary bulgogi tents, but it also has some incredibly unique architecture that speaks of times past. Whereas so much of this city seems to be torn down and rebuilt every year or so in favor of more modern architecture, several of Bukseong-ro’s buildings maintain the look and feel from decades before. Several buildings are in the style of Japanese occupation-era Korea (19101945). It was while admiring these buildings and the street’s unique vibe that we happened to peek down an alley and notice an eye-catching old building lit up from the

outside. We wandered down for a closer look and noticed it appeared to be some kind of cafe or bar, but we weren’t certain if it was open or not. We noticed a middle-aged Korean man working inside and he beckoned us in. My cousin and I looked at one another, gave a simultaneous “What the hell? Why not?” shrug and headed on in. 삶에서 찾았던 대부분의 좋았던 것들처럼, 아주 우연히 소금창고 를 알게 되었다. 사촌이 대구에 놀러 와 있었고, 북성로를 걸어 다 니며 저녁으로 부른 배를 꺼주고자 산책중이었다. 그 거리는 이 전에 철물점, 작업장, 유명한 불고기 포장마차 등으로 유명한 곳 이었지만, 또한 지나간 시간을 증명하는 믿어지지 않을 정도로 독특한 건물도 있었다. 사람들이 더 현대적인 건물을 좋아하기에 이 도시의 많은 부분이 해체되고 매년마다 새로 지어지는 반면 에, 북성로의 몇몇 건물은 수십년 전의 모습과 느낌을 간직하고

있다. 몇몇 건물은 일제강점기(1910-1945)의 형식을 띠고 있기 도 하다. 이러한 건물과 거리의 독특한 분위기를 감상하고 있는 도중에 아래쪽 거리를 살펴보다가 바깥에 불이 켜진 채로 눈길을 사로잡는 오래된 빌딩을 발견했다. 우리는 더 가까이에서 살펴보 기 위해 가보았고, 카페나 바같이 보이는 곳을 발견하게 되었지 만 그 곳이 영업 중인지 아닌지 확실하지 않았다. 안에서 일을 하 고 있는 중년의 한국 아저씨를 발견하게 되었고 그는 손짓을 우 리를 불렀다. 사촌과 필자는 서로를 쳐다보다가 동시에 “이게 뭐 지? 가보지 뭐”라는 으쓱거림을 주고 받고는 안으로 들어갔다. The man introduced himself as Mr. Kim and he was very enthusiastic to show us his bar, giving us a personal tour. The entrance had a rustic charm. Everything was made of wood and smelled freshly cut. When we entered into main bar area we were met with high ceilings, a stage, and stairs leading up to a loft with coffee tables and couches that oversaw the whole space. It looked like the inside of an old barn or warehouse. A bridge from the loft led over the entrance hall into a room with a large antique table, and a corner that acted as Mr. Kim’s office.

남자는 스스로를 김씨라고 소개했고 개인 투어를 해주며 그의 바 를 보여주는 것에 매우 열정적이었다. 입구는 투박한 매력이 있 었다. 모든 것이 나무로 만들어져 있었고 자른 지 얼마안 된 냄새 가 났다. 메인 바 구역으로 들어서자 높은 천장, 무대, 커피 테이 블과 소파, 모든 공간을 내려다 보는 위층으로 올라가는 계단을 보게 되었다. 마치 오래된 헛간이나 창고의 내부 같았다. 위층에 서 시작되는 다리는 입구의 홀 위를 지나 커다란 안티크 테이블 이 있는 방과 김씨의 사무실로 쓰이는 코너 쪽으로 이어졌다. Mr. Kim explained that he was a professional artist and had opened the space with the intention of turning it into a bar/cafe, performance space, and art gallery. Mr. Kim’s artistic sensibilities come across in the interior design and several of his paintings are on display. 김씨는 자신이 전문적인 예술가라고 소개했고 그 공간을 바나 카 페, 공연장, 전시회장으로 바꾸려는 목적으로 그 곳을 열었다. 김 씨의 예술적인 감각은 내부 디자인에 반영되었고 그의 그림이 몇 개 걸려 있었다. -continued on p14-

The building’s rustic warehouse look makes a lot of sense considering the name. “Sogeum Chang-go”, means “Salt Warehouse.” (That sentence will no doubt sound strange in the Korean translation). This style of design is also apparent in his other business, Mix Cafe, which is just up the street on the main road. The bar offers a small selection of craft beer in bottles, Max on draught, and variety of hard liquor and cocktails. It’s a bit off the beaten path (which people who know me know I see that as a selling point), and tricky to find since it’s back in an alley; however, anyone who wants to go out but has outgrown the chaos of bar street ought to add this to their list of haunts. 건물의 투박한 창고 외관은 가게의 이름인 소금창고를 생각하면 말이 되었다. 또한 이러한 스타일의 디자인은 그의 다른 가게인 ‘믹스 카페’에서도 분명히 드러 났는데, 이 곳은 위쪽 큰길가에 있 다. 바에서는 병맥주로 된 수제 맥주, 맥스 생맥주, 다양한 양주와 칵테일 등을 팔고 있었다. 사람들이 많이 다니는 길에서는 조금 떨어져 있으며(필자를 아는 사람들은 필자가 이런 점을 가게의 장점이라고 생각한다는 것을 알 것이다.) 골목 뒤쪽에 있어서 찾 기가 까다롭다. 그러나 외출은 하고 싶으니 술집이 즐비한 거리 의 카오스에 흥미를 잃은 사람이라면 누구나 이 곳을 자주 가는 곳 리스트에 올려야 한다.

So here’s how to find this hidden gem: -From Jungangno exit 4 head north (straight) -Take the third left (This is Bukseong-ro), Lotte Department Store is too far -Take a right down the 3rd alley. It will be on your left across from the parking lot. The building number is 81. 이 숨겨진 보물을 찾으려면 이렇게 가야한다. -중앙로 4번 출구에서 북쪽을 향해 간다.(직진) -세번째 골목에서 왼쪽으로 들어서야 하는데 (여기는 북성로이다.), 롯데 백화점까지 갔다면 너무 멀리 갔다. -그리고 난 다음 다시 세번째 골목에서 오른쪽으로 들어서면 왼쪽에 소금창고가 있는데, 주차장 맞은편이다. 건물번호는 81번이다.

I really hope this place sticks around for a good long while. Especially since it provides Daegu with something that is getting harder and harder to find these days: A nice, quiet place to grab a drink. 이 곳이 정말 오랫동안 영업을 하기를 바란다. 특히 요즘 점점 더 찾아보기 힘든 곳이 대구에 생겨났기 때문이다. 술 한 잔 하기에 조용한 좋은 장소 말이다.

Daegu has the perfect combination of expats and locals. Our city isn’t swarming with people, our traffic is acceptable and people are just nicer in Daegu. We also have really good food spots. Our summers are hot like Ibiza but one thing is missing: good brunch places. A friend of mine recommended this little restaurant located near Banwoldang called Schoron. 대구는 외국인과 한국인의 완벽한 조합을 갖고 있다. 도시는 사 람들이 득실득실하지 않고 교통량도 적당하며 대구의 사람들은 더 좋은 사람들이다. 또한 이 곳에는 맛집이 정말 많다. 여름은 이 비자같이 덥지만 하나가 빠졌다. 바로 괜찮은 브런치 가게이다. 친구 중 하나가 반월당 근처에 자리 잡은 쇼롱이라고 하는 작은 식당을 추천해주었다. To get there, get out at Banwoldang Exit 1, walk straight once you get out and turn at the first right. Keep walking into the alley and then turn on your first left, keep walking until your first right - the building has a fresh, dark blue paint. 쇼롱에 가려면 반월당 1번출구로 나와서 계속 직진을 하다가 첫 번째 골목에서 오른쪽으로 들어선다. 골목으로 들어가서 계속 걷 다가 왼쪽으로 나있는 첫번째 골목에서 왼쪽으로 간다. 그리고 처음으로 나오는 골목에서 오른쪽으로 갈 때까지 계속 걷는다. 건물은 생생한 남색 페인팅이 되어 있다. The building was originally a 60 year-old traditional Korean house and was remodeled into this new, modern look. All three floors belong to the owner of Schoron. The first and second floor (mostly for big groups) is the restaurant and the third floor is a café; the owner sort of kept the traditional touches of the building into the café when he got it. 건물은 원래 60년된 한국의 전통 가옥이었고 새로운 현대식 외관 으로 리모델링했다. 세 층 모두가 쇼롱이다. 첫번째와 두번째 층 은(대부분 단체 손님을 위한 곳) 식당이고 세번째 층은 카페이다. 쇼롱의 사장님은 건물을 샀을 때, 건물의 전통적인 느낌을 카페 내부에 남겨두었다.

The owner, before opening this amazing spot, had a normal office job. One day, he decided to quit his nineto-five job because he had an epiphany and realized that he loved food way too much. He started working in Itaewon - the Mecca of good food in Seoul, learning all sorts of cuisine from the best. Itaewon, if you didn't know, is the place to be if you’re looking for a variety of food from different cultures. Finally, he decided it was time for him to open up his very own restaurant and voila - Schoron was born. 이 멋진 공간을 열기 전에 사장님은 보통의 사무직을 직업으 로 삼고 있었다. 어느 날 회사원 생활을 그만두기로 마음 먹 었는데, 어떤 깨달음을 얻고 음식을 정말 너무너무 사랑한다 는 것을 알아차렸기 때문이었다. 그는 서울에 있는 맛있는 음식의 메카, 이태원에서 최고에게 모든 종류의 요리를 배우 며 일을 시작했다. 이태원에 대해 잘 모른다면 다양한 문화 에서 온 수많은 음식을 찾는다면 가야하는 곳이라고 하겠다. 마침내 그는 그만의 식당을 열 때라고 생각했고 짜잔! 쇼롱 이 문을 열었다. -continued on p18-

What was really impressive was the fact that they had an extensive menu. From brunch items like French Toast with bacon, pancakes, and New York omelettes to additional dishes like pasta (Basil Pesto Shrimp Fettuccini, Green Curry Pasta), Indonesian Fried Rice, Duck Breast Steak with Orange Red wine Sauce, and a Brie Cheese Plate (!!!). 가장 인상적이었던 것은 메뉴가 광범위하다는 것이었다. 베이컨, 팬케이크가 곁들여진 프렌치 토스트와 뉴욕 오믈렛같은 브런치 아이템부터 파스타(바질 페스토 쉬림프 페투치니, 그린 커리 파 스타), 인도네시아 볶음밥, 오렌지 레드 와인 소스를 곁들인 오리 가슴살 스테이크 , 브리 치즈 플레이트 등 추가적인 메뉴도 있었 다. We ordered the French Toast, the Schoron Breakfast, and a Banana Almond Smoothie. This was more than enough for two people. 우리는 프렌치 토스트, 쇼롱 브렉퍼스트, 바나나 아몬드 스무디 를 주문했다. 두 명 분보다 더 많은 양이었다. The French toast doesn’t look like your normal French toast - these are three fluffy, soft breads that are richly covered in cinnamon, topped with bacon, a side of syrup, and a side of banana covered in whipped cream (they give you more syrup if you ask). It was by far one of the best French toasts we’ve ever had. They had a soft, chewy satisfying bite to it. 18

프렌치 토스트는 여러분의 평범한 프렌치 토스트 같지 않았다. 베이컨이 올려져 있고 계피에 뒤덮인 폭신폭신하고 부드러운 빵 세 개가 시럽, 휘핑크림으로 뒤덮인 바나나를 사이드로 해서 함 께 나온다(시럽은 요청하면 더 제공된다.). 단연코 우리가 이제껏 먹어본 최고의 프렌치 토스트 중 하나였다. 부드럽고 쫀득하여 만족스러운 한입이었다. Next, The Schoron breakfast plate came with two slices of wheat bread with two eggs, bacon, a handful of salad in vinaigrette sauce, a small serving of baked beans, grilled tomato, amazing grilled and seasoned mushrooms and finally, perfectly cooked potato wedges (crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside). This was overall an excellent breakfast platter, the sunny side up was a little overcooked if I may say so, but everything else was amazing. 다음으로는 쇼롱 브렉퍼스트 플레이트가 빵 두 조각과 함께 달걀 두 개, 한 줌 정도의 비네그레트 드레싱을 뿌린 샐러드 , 베이크 드 빈즈 조금, 구운 토마토, 시즈닝이 뿌려진 잘 구운 버섯, 그리 고 마침내 완벽하게 요리된 웨지 포테이토(겉은 바삭하고, 안은 부드럽고 포슬포슬했다.)가 곁들여져 나왔다. 전체적으로 훌륭한 브렉퍼스트 플래터였고 굳이 말하자면 써니 사이드 업은 조금 많 이 익었다. 하지만 다른 모든 것은 정말 좋았다.

Unfortunately, the smoothie was not very good. It tasted very watery as if they put too much ice. We could taste the banana but that was it. It just tasted like a watery, banana smoothie. 안타깝게도 스무디는 그렇게 좋지 않았다. 얼음을 너무 많이 넣 은 듯 매우 연했다. 바나나 맛이 나기는 했지만 그것뿐이었다. 물 맛이 많이 나는 바나나 스무디였다. They are open everyday, Monday to Sunday at 11:30a.m to 9p.m daily. La Salud Offering a New and Improved Food and Beer Selection

I would like to first start by saying, ”Thank you!”, to the people at the Daegu Compass, past and present. I’ve been writing off and on for the last six years with over two dozen stories ranging from Backstage with the Phantom of the Opera, the Annual Daegu Body Painting Festival, Vacationing in Guam, Diving in Daegu, or various places to find great food. I did a story a while back about such a place, LaSalud. I wrote about how they just opened and had the best burgers in all of Daegu. Not only burgers but mac and cheese, pulled pork, salads and some of the best fish I ever had. The fish was tender white fish, so light and not oily at all. I became good friends with the owner Lee Taekyu, TK and his wife Kim Jung-min. 먼저 예전과 현재 일하고 있는 대구 컴퍼스 사람들에게 “감사하 다”라고 말하며 글을 시작하고 싶다. 지난 육년 동안 팬텀 오브 더 오페라의 백스테이지, 매년 열리는 대구바디페인팅페스티벌, 괌에서의 휴가, 대구에서의 다이빙에서부터 맛있는 음식을 먹을 수 있는 다양한 식당까지 스무편이 넘는 글을 이따금씩 썼다. 그 리고 꽤 오래 전에 라살루드에 대한 글도 썼다. 어떻게 가게를 열 었는지, 어떻게 대구 최고의 버거를 만들게 되었는 지에 대해 말 이다. 버거뿐만 아니라 맥앤치즈, 풀드포크, 샐러드, 이제껏 먹어 본 생선요리 중 최고에 대해서도. 부드러운 흰살생선에 가벼운 맛이면서도 전혀 기름지지도 않았다. 라살루드의 주인인 이태규 씨(TK)와 부인인 김정민씨와도 좋은 친구가 되었다. In June, TK told me that he was going to close for about six weeks to remodel and extend the menu. Before the remodel TK went to Portland OR, Los Angeles CA, Vancouver Canada and New York City NY for a food trip. He was inspired by the way BBQ was done in smokers. He had already studied and prepared food in Spain back in 2014 with his wife. Now he wanted to do BBQ. With the help of his good friend Lim Dong-ju he made a large Texas oak wood smoker from scratch. The smoker looks professionally made, I thought he had bought it. He also built the retractable door and room that the smoker is placed in.

지난 6월에 TK는 리모델링을 하고 메뉴를 늘리기 위해 6주 정도 라살루드의 문을 닫는다고 이야기했다. 그리고 리모델 링 전에 TK는 미국의 포틀랜드, LA, 뉴욕, 캐나다의 벤쿠버 로 음식여행을 떠났고 훈제로 바베큐를 하는데 영감을 받았 다. 이미 2014년에 아내와 함께 스페인에서 요리를 공부하 고 준비했지만 이제 바베큐를 하고 싶어했다. 친구인 임동 주씨의 도움을 받아, 아무런 사전지식이 없는 데서 시작하 여 커다란 텍사스식 참나무 훈제기를 만들었다. 훈제기는 전 문적으로 잘 만들어진 듯 보였고 필자는 산 것이라고 생각했 다. 그리고 접을 수 있는 문과 훈제기가 들어갈 공간도 직접 만들었다. Now the menu at La Salud includes; Brisket that falls apart with a gorgeous smoke ring, Pork Ribs with a homemade BBQ sauce that’s delicious, and smoked Half Chicken, along with the already amazing Pulled Pork. TK has four different combo meals; 1 meat and 1 side for 15K won, 2 meats and 2 sides for 29K won, 3 meats and 3 sides for 43K won, and 4 meats and 4 sides for 58K won. TK has added more sides as well; Cheese Fries, with cheddar cheese sauce that tastes like it’s homemade sauce made with rue, Truffle fries, and Dirty fries that are covered with grated parmesan cheese. The menu also includes; Baked Beans that come with large pieces of pulled pork, Mashed Potatoes and gravy, and Coleslaw handmade fresh daily. All the bread is made by hand, double-risen yeast rolls with a perfect fluffy middle. LaSalud now has a cheese platter; a classy platter that has two types of crackers, prosciutto, peppered salami, five different cheeses, including Brie and blueberry, strawberry, apricot jelly along with honey, 3 olives and a pickle for 16K won. 이제 라살루드의 메뉴에는 다음과 같아졌는데 끝내주는 스 모크링이 있는 잘려진 브리스켓, 맛있는 홈메이드 바베큐 소 스가 곁들여진 포크 립, 훌륭한 풀드 포크와 함께 나오는 스 모크 하프 치킨이 있다. 네가지 콤보 메뉴도 있다. 15,000원 짜리 콤보는 고기 1종, 사이드 1종, 29,000원짜리 콤보는 고 기 2종, 사이드 2종, 58,000원짜리 콤보는 고기 4종, 사이드 4종이다. 사이드 메뉴 역시 추가되었다. 루를 사용하고 집에 서 직접 만든 듯한 맛이 나는 체다치즈소가 나오는 치즈후 라이, 트러플 후라이, 파마산 치즈가루로 뒤덮인 더티 후라 이가 있다. 그리고 커다란 풀드포크 덩어리와 같이 나오는 -continued on p22-

베이크드 빈즈, 매쉬 포테이토와 그레이비소스, 매일 신선하게 직접 만드는 코울슬로도 있다. 모든 빵은 직접 만드는데 빵은 가 운데가 완벽하게 부푼 더블 라이즈 이스트 롤이다. 이제 라살루 드에도 치즈 플래터가 있다. 플래터에는 두 종류의 크래커, 프로 슈터, 페퍼 살라미, 브리를 포함한 다섯 종류의 치즈 꿀과 블루베 리, 딸기, 복숭아 잼, 올리브 세 개 피클이 있고 16,000원이다.

When LaSalud originally opened it had only one beer, Miller. After taking a tour to the Brooklyn Brewery New York City, TK was inspired to bring it back to Daegu. LaSalud now has two Korean beers Kabrew pilsner and Kabrew weizen and four from Brooklyn, Brooklyn Lager, Brooklyn American Ale, Brooklyn East IPA, and my favorite Brooklyn Sorachi Ace. TK told me that that this beer is famous and is ranked as one of the top 25 beers in the world. TK also added red, white and rose wine to the menu. During the remodel, TK added a walk-in refrigerator for the beer, which he also built. He also has a hamburger patty maker he’s proud of that he bought from Spain. He removed the TVs and added more speakers for music. This will probably be my last story for the Daegu Compass and I’m glad I got a chance to write about so many different things. The pace of life in Chengdu is considerably slower compared to other major Chinese cities. Whether leisurely slurping up noodles at the outdoor restaurant, or playing an enticing game of mahjong at the teahouse or the park, the locals here seem to have mastered the art of relaxation. A few tips gleaned from my lovely stay. 청두 안에서의 삶의 속도는 중국의 다른 주요 도시와 비교해서 상당히 더 느리다. 야외식당에서 여유롭게 국수를 후루룩 먹든, 티 하우스나 공원에서 사람을 유혹하는 마작 게임을 하든, 이 곳 의 지역주민들은 여유로움이라는 관해서 예술의 경지를 통달한 듯 하다. 필자가 머물렀던 좋은 시간 동안 얻은 몇 가지 팁을 소개 한다. STAY 숙박 Chengdu Mix Hostel Backpackers 청두 믹스 호스텔 백패커스 This is one of those hostels that upon walking in you are greeted by smiling and friendly staff who speak superb English and are eager to provide you with a handy drawn map of the area in which they have highlighted what to do, see and eat within the vicinity. Now, that’s what I call service. I can’t rave enough about how helpful, informative and overall warm the staff was. To boot, the decor and 28

vibe of the place was quirky, cozy and youthful. And, they had a restaurant in which lovely aunties and grandmas cooked up some delicious [and very affordable] local grub. Probably one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in. 들어서면 미소를 지으며 친절히 대해주는 스탭이 맞이하는 그런 호스텔 중 하나이다. 스탭들은 영어를 매우 잘하고, 유용하고 직 접 그린 그 지역의 지도를 손님에게 주고자 열과 성의를 다하며, 지도에는 근처에서 뭘 하고 보고 먹을 지 표시를 해 놓았다. 자, 그 것이 바로 필자가 말하는 서비스이다. 스탭들이 얼마나 도움 이 되었고 유익한 정보를 많이 주었으며 전체적으로 상냥했는지 아무리 칭찬을 해도 모자라다. 거기에 덧붙여, 호스텔의 장식과 분위기는 독특했고 안락했으며 젊음이 넘쳤다. 그리고 사랑스러 운 이모님과 할머니가 맛있는(그리고 가격도 매우 괜찮은) 지역 음식을 요리하는 식당도 있었다. 아마도 지내봤던 최고의 호스텔 중 하나였다. Breeding to learn about the history of pandas, the work they do at the base, and obviously to fall in love with pandas. Make sure you get there early to avoid the crowds. 청두는 판다왕국이며 청두에 왔다는 것은 나무 꼭대기에서 느긋하게 시간을 보내고 하루종일 대나무를 우적우적 먹는 사랑스럽고 북실북실한 동물을 보러왔다는 것이 분명하다. 청두 판다 생태공원에서 몇 시간을 보내며 판다의 역사와 생 태기지에서 사람들이 하는 일에 대해 배워보며 판다에 홀딱 빠져보길 바란다. 일찍 가서 구름떼같은 사람들을 피해라. Wangjiang Pavilion Park 왕지앙 공원 Glimpse into the laid-back Chengdu lifestyle at this park. Here, you will find plenty of people spending endless hours at the teahouse playing mahjong, a traditional Chinese board game made up tiles, or cards. You may also stumble upon people practicing tai chi or kung fu. 이 공원에서 여유로운 청두의 라이프 스타일을 들여다 볼 수 있다. 많은 사람들이 티하우스에서 타일로 만든 중국식 전통 보드 게임인 마작이나 카드를 하며 한없이 시간을 보내는 모 습을 보게 된다. 그리고 태극권이나 쿵푸를 하는 사람들을 만나게 될 수도 있다. Wukuaishi Tea Market 우쿠아이쉬 차 시장 If you’re in need of souvenirs, head over to this market for high quality tea. I bought some here and had the intention of gifting it, but after tasting it, I decided to gift it to myself. I recommend getting a couple bags, just in case. 만약 기념품이 필요하다면 고품질의 차를 사러 이 시장으로 가 봐라. 필자는 여기에서 차를 좀 사서 남에게 선물로 주려 고 했으나 맛을 보고 난 후에 스스로에게 선물하기로 마음먹 었다. 만약을 위해 커플가방을 사라고 추천한다. SEE 볼것 Wenshu Monastery 웬슈 수도원 This monastery is conveniently located five minutes away from Mix Hostel. I found the architecture of the structures to be more dramatic than Korean temples. My favorite part was the garden, boasting ponds full of koi, pagodas and sculpted rocks. -continued on p30-

수도원은 편리하게도 믹스 호스텔에서 도보로 5분 정도 떨어진 자리에 있다. 한국의 절보다 수도원의 건물이 훨씬 더 드라마틱 하다고 생각했다. 가장 좋았던 곳은 비단잉어가 가득한 연못, 파 고다, 바위조각상을 뽐내는 정원이었다. Jinli Folk Street 진리 민속거리 Go here at night to appreciate the plethora of lanterns lighting up the street and architecture of the buildings, in the style of the Qing Dynasty. If you can resist the temptation, avoid shopping for souvenirs or drinking at the bars. Mostly everything is overpriced as this is a very popular - rightly so - destination for tourists. 이 곳은 거리와 촉나라 왕조 풍의 건물을 밝히는 등불의 향연을 보기 위해 밤에 가보도록 해라. 만약 유혹에 저항할 수 없다면 기 념품 쇼핑이나 술집에서 한 잔하지 않도록 해라. 이 곳이 관광객 들에게 매우 인기있는 장소이다 보니 당연히도 대부분 모든 것들 이 너무 비싸다. EAT 먹어볼 것 Hot Pot 핫팟 (역주 : 훠궈) This lesser Chinese metropolis is located in the Western province of Sichuan, known for its spicy cuisine. If you make it to Chengdu, you must try hot pot—a simmering hot soup where ingredients (sliced meat, seafood, vegetables, etc.) are cooked by dunking into the broth. Do yourself a favor and order the mild version. From personal experience, the ‘spicy’ level isn’t apt for human consumption. 이 중국의 작은 도시, 청두는 서쪽의 쓰촨(역주 : 사천)성 안에 자 리잡고 있으며 매운 음식으로 유명하다. 만약 청두에 가게 된다 면 반드시 핫팟을 먹어봐야 한다. 핫팟은 재료(얇게 썬 고기, 해 물, 야채 등)을 육수에 담궈서 익혀 먹는 뜨거운 탕이다.입맛에 맞 는대로 하고 덜 매운 맛으로 주문해라. 개인적인 경험에 따르면 ‘매운 맛’ 레벨은 사람이 먹는데 적합하지 않다.

Aidao Nunnery 아이다오 수녀원 Make sure you make it to this donation-based vegan lunch (5RMB is acceptable) cooked by the nuns living at the facility. It’s like Korean temple food, but a lot better. It’s served every day at 11:40 am, don’t be late. 시설에 있는 수녀님들이 정해진 가격없이 기부금을 받아(5위안 정도가 적당하다.) 만드는 채식 점심을 꼭 먹어봐라. 한국의 사찰 음식 같지만 훨씬 낫다. 매일 11시 40분에 나오니 늦지 말라. Street Food 거리 음식 Eat the buns, the noodles, the soups, the pastries. It’s all amazing and so affordable! 만두, 국수, 국물, 패스트리를 먹어봐라. 모두 정말 맛있고 가격도 좋다! DRINK 음료 Tea 차 It’s no secrete China produces top notch green tea. Go into one of the many teahouses to enjoy a jasmine blend, or any other you fancy. 중국이 최고의 녹차를 생산한다는 것은 비밀이 아니다. 수없이 많은 찻집 중 한 군데에 들러 자스민 블렌드나 끌리는 차를 즐겨 보길 바란다. Baiju 바이주 This is a traditional Chinese liquor made from grain with a range of alcohol between 40% and 60%. It’s clear and usually made from sorghum, but the ingredients vary from region to region. Use moderation when drinking, it’s very strong. 바이주는 알콜도수가 40도에서부터 60도까지 있으며 곡식으로 만든 중국 전통주이다. 맑은 술이며 보통 수수로 만들지만 지방 에 따라 재료는 다양하다. 마실 때는 적절히 마시는 것이 좋다. 매 우 독한 술이다.

Bookworm 북웜 This posh bar full of books serves some mean cocktails. It also has a great selection of wine and beers. This hip establishment is perfect for a date or to start off the night. It is conveniently located in one of Chengdu’s best nightlife districts. 책으로 가득 하고 화려한 분위기의 북웜은 기막힌 칵테일은 내온 다. 그리고 갖추고 있는 와인과 맥주도 훌륭하다. 힙한 칵테일바 로 데이트나 제대로 밤을 시작하기 전에 가기에 완벽하다. 편리 하게도 청두 최고의 밤나들이 구역 중 한 곳에 자리잡고 있다.

Little Bar 리틀 바 If you’re looking for good craft beer and some live music, Little Bar is for you. We headed here after spending a bit too much time at Bookworm, which made us miss the music. As the name suggests, the place is little and cozy. For more space, head over to their second location—New Little Bar—which is larger in size and music programming. 좋은 수제 맥주나 라이브 음악을 찾고 있다면 리틀 바가 제격이 다. 우리는 북웜에서 조금 지나치게 긴 시간을 보내고 이 곳으로 향했고, 그래서 라이브 공연을 놓쳤다. 이름이 말해주듯이 바의 크기가 작고 아늑하다. 좀 더 넓은 공간이 필요하다면 2호점인 뉴 리틀 바로 가면 된다. 이 곳이 조금 더 크고 음악도 더 다양하다.

A Weekend Guide Namhae, South Korea

Namhae Island, South Korea’s 5th largest island, lies along the southern coast of the country. About a 2.5 hour drive from Daegu, we picked up our rental car and embarked on our journey. Touted as one of Korea’s grandest landscapes, we were pretty excited to see if the hype was true for ourselves! 한국에서 다섯번째로 큰 섬인 남해는 한국의 남해안을 따라 자리 잡고 있다. 대구에서 약 2시간 반 정도 운전하는 거리로, 렌터카 를 픽업해서 우리의 여행을 시작했다. 한국에서 가장 웅장한 자 연풍경을 내세우고 있어서 우리는 그러한 말이 사실인지 직접 볼 수 있게 되어 매우 신이 났다. Armed with cheap tents and all of the supplies for an epic grill out, we had our hearts set on finding a secluded beach and setting up camp. We’d read numerous blogs detailing amazing experiences on the secluded beaches of Namhae and we were excited to have the same experience. 32

저렴한 텐트와 끝내주는 그릴아웃(역주 : 친구인 남자들끼리 모 여 야외 바베큐를 하며 시간을 보내는 것)을 위한 모든 준비물을 챙겨서, 고립된 해변가를 찾고 캠프를 세우는 데 온 마음을 집중 했다. 우리는 남해의 외따로 떨어진 해변에서의 멋진 경험에 대 해 자세히 나와 있는 수많은 블로그를 읽었고 같은 경험을 하게 될 것이라서 기대에 들떴다. Unfortunately, after hours of driving and searching, we were unable to find any such thing. The island seems to be fairly well developed and any coastline that isn’t cliff seems to be public or inaccessible. A little disappointed but not totally discouraged, we decided to camp on Namhae’s popular beach campground Sangju Silver Sand Beach instead.

Camping in Korea is a popular past-time, so, during the peak summer months, make sure to arrive early enough to grab a spot! If camping isn’t your thing, there were plenty of cute seaside pensions around the island as well. 한국에서 캠핑은 인기있는 여가시간 활용방법이다. 그러니 여름 피크 시즌에는 자리를 잡을 수 있도록 일찍 도착하도록 해야 한다. 만약 캠핑에 흥미가 없다면 섬의 해안가에 있는 예쁜 펜션도 많다. Beach drama aside, we had a fabulous weekend exploring Namhae Island. It truly is one of the most beautiful landscapes in South Korea. Rolling green mountains, ocean coastline dotted with small islands, and overall spectacular views make Namhae easy to love! 해변에서의 꿈같은 시간 이 외에도 우리는 남해섬을 돌아보 는 멋진 주말을 보냈다. 남해는 진정으로 한국에서 가장 아 름다운 풍경 중 하나였다. 뻗어져 나간 푸른 산맥, 작은 섬들 이 점점이 박힌 해안가, 전체적으로 스펙터클한 풍경은 쉽게 남해와 사랑에 빠지게 만들었다.

What to do in Namhae 남해에서 해 봐야 할 것들 Drive along the coast. 해안가 따라 드라이브 하기 Cruising the coast and taking in the beautiful landscape was one of the highlights of Namhae. Take a road less traveled and see the agricultural side of Korea that isn’t obvious in cities like Daegu. 해안을 따라 돌아다니며 아름다운 풍경 속으로 빠져드는 것 은 남해의 하이라이트 중 하나였다. 사람들이 많지 않은 도 로를 고르고 대구같은 도시에서 보기 힘든 한국의 농업적인 면을 보길 바란다. -continued on p34-

Go to a Beach. 해변가 가 보기 No seaside weekend is complete without a trip to the beach! We went near the end of spring so the weather wasn’t right for swimming, but we still enjoyed waking up to views of Sangju Silver Sand Beach and walking along others. 모래사장으로 가지 않고서는 해변과 함께 하는 주말이 되지 않는 다. 우리는 봄의 마지막 무렵에 가서 수영할만 할 날씨가 아니었 다. 그래도 상주은모래해변의 풍경을 보고 다른 곳을 걸으며 즐 거운 시간을 보냈다.

Visit Boriam Temple. 보리암 암자 가 보기 The temple is situated up in Geumsan Mountain on a cliff's edge overlooking stunning views. From the top, you can see Namhae City, the ocean, green forested mountainside and the numerous islands along the coast. Definitely my favorite Korean temple visit yet, and I’ve been to quite a few! 보리암은 멋진 풍경을 내려다 보는 절벽 가장자리 위, 금산에 자 리잡고 있다. 정상에서 남해시와 바다, 푸른 숲이 우거진 산등성 이, 해안가를 따라 있는 수 많은 섬을 볼 수 있다. 여러 절을 가 보 았지만 이제까지 가 본 절 중 확실히 가장 좋아하는 곳이었다.

Hike Geumsan Mountain. 금산 등산하기 Not only is the view from Boriam Temple breathtaking, but the views all along the ridge of Geumsan are as well. If you have the time and energy, follow one of the hiking trails behind the temple. There is one that takes you past a small Korean restaurant that came recommended from locals on the trail (cash only), and on through to a rocky edge. We made the most of the epic view and couldn’t resist the photo op. 보리암에서 보는 풍경만이 숨이 멎을 듯 아름다운 것은 아니다.

금산의 능선을 따르는 풍경 역시 그러하다. 만약 시간과 체력이 된다면 보리암 뒤로 나 있는 등산길을 따라가 보길 바란다. 길에 서 만난 지역 주민들이 추천하는 작은 식당(현금 결제만 가능)을 지나는 길이 있는데, 바위로 된 가장자리로 가기도 한다. 우리는 그 멋진 풍경이 누릴 수 있을 만큼 누렸고, 자연스레 사진을 찍게 되었다.

See the Rice Terrace Fields in Daraengi Village. 다랭이 마을의 계단식 논 감상하기 Daraengi Village’s claim to fame is their picturesque rice terrace fields that scale Mt. Seolheul to a height of nearly 500m. Sloping up the mountainside, the terraces have 108 total steps overlooking the ocean. From an observation deck, you can see the agricultural gem in its entirety. 다랭이 마을의 명성은 마을의 그림과도 같은 계단식 논 덕분이 다. 이 논은 설흘산을 거의 500m로 바꾸어 놓았다. 산비탈을 깎 아서 만든 계단식 논에는 바다를 내려다 보는 총 108개의 단이 있다. 전망대 데크에서는 농업적 성격을 지는 명소의 전체를 볼 수 있다.

Visit the American and German Villages. 미국마을과 독일마을 가 보기 The American and German Villages offer an interesting look into South Korea’s history. Built to welcome back Koreans who had left the country in the 60’s and 70’s in search of jobs abroad during tough economic times, these villages boast the vibes of their respective countries. If I could recommend one over the other, the German village had a bit more to do. It has many cute cafes, beer gardens and unique restaurants with the same stunning view all of Namhae seems to share. 미국마을과 독일마을은 한국역사를 들여다볼 수 있는 흥미로운 시각을 제공한다. 이 마을은 60년대와 70년대에 어려운 경제적 시기에 일을 찾아 외국으로 한국을 떠났던 한국인들을 환영하기 위해 지어졌으며, 그들이 있었던 나라의 분위기를 자랑하고 있 다. 만약 그 중 하나를 추천해야 한다면 독일 마을에 해 볼 만한 것들이 조금 더 있다. 남해의 멋진 풍경을 감상할 수 있는 아기자 기한 카페, 비어 가든, 독특한 식당들이 많이 있다.

How to get there 가는 방법 1. Rent a car from Lotte - The best way to experience the island and actually get there, is to rent a car. Lotte offers cheap prices for car rentals in Korea, usually about 130,000 won for a compact car for the weekend. They have two locations in Daegu, one near Dongdaegu Station and the other near Sangin Station. You can visit their site at www.lotterentacar.net. Don’t forget your International Driver’s Permit! 롯데렌터카에서 차량 렌트 - 섬을 여행하고 섬에 갈 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법을 자동차를 빌리는 것이다. 롯데렌터카에서 는 저렴한 가격으로 차를 빌릴 수 있는데 보통 주말 동안 약 13만원에 중형차를 대여할 수 있다. 대구에는 지점이 두 군 데 있는데 하나는 동대구역 근처이고 다른 하나는 지하철 상 인역 근처이다. 웹사이트 www.lotterentacar.net에서 확 인해 볼 수 있다. 국제운전면허증을 잊지말고 가져가기 바란 다. 2. Get a GPS in English - Make sure you request an English GPS system from the car rental company. Since Google Maps doesn’t work here for road navigation, having one that does and that’s in English came in handy. It’s all about the Ginseng

Ok, so, I love to eat, everyone knows that by now, but I also love to travel (and eat). When I was at the Camp Walker travel office the other day, Peace Tour, they were offering a free trip for a small group of foreigners to have a “sneak peek” at the upcoming World Ginseng Expo being held in Geumsan from the 22nd of September through the 23rd of October, 2017. Now, I have been using Korean Red Ginseng for many years, from the store, but I have always wondered “where does this stuff come from”? Now is my chance to find out, I’m thinking, so I quickly signed up the whole family. 36

그래서 말인데, 필자는 먹는 것을 매우 좋아한다. 지금쯤이면 모 두가 그 사실을 안다. 하지만 여행하는 것도(라고 썼지만 여행하 면서 먹는 것도) 매우 좋아한다. 몇일 전에 캠프 워커의 여행사인 피스 투어의 사무실에 있었을 때 여행사에서 소수의 외국인들에 게 9월 22일부터 23일까지, 곧 열릴 금산세계인삼엑스포를 살짝 볼 수 있는 무료 투어를 제공한다는 소식을 알게 되었다. 자, 가 게에서 구입한 한국의 홍삼을 수년 동안 먹어왔지만 항상 “이 건 대체 어디서 온 거지?”라며 궁금했다. 이제 궁금증을 해결할 기 회가 왔다고 생각했고 재빨리 온가족을 여행에 등록시켰다. The morning of the trip, several of us boarded the bus at Camp Walker, headed to Geumsan. After a short rest stop along the way for a drink and a snack, then a buffet lunch with a very nice hot water foot soaking experience and arrival the festival area, about a 2-3 hours later. We were greeted by an English speaking guide and brought to a room, where we watched a short, English video about the expo and its history, along with some facts about ginseng and its production. Immediately following the video, we were taken by the guide through the different levels of the expo center and the exhibits, although not all completed, were explained in detail to us. I can say, it was fascinating

to me and I felt very privileged to get a VIP view of the expo almost a month ahead of the World. After traversing the expo itself, we spent about an hour outside in the traditional ginseng market, where we were able to try and taste raw ginseng light brown, red and black. After the raw tasting, we sat down and had deep fried ginseng root, with a special honey dipping sauce and ginseng makgeolli (ginseng wine). I had no idea deep fried ginseng was that good. Finally, after the traditional ginseng market, the bus took us to a ginseng soju factory, where we were given a short class, then allowed to make raw ginseng flower petals, attach them to roots, set them into special decanters, then pour 25% clear Korean Soju over our creations. Once the decanters were made, we had a small judging of which flower was most realistic and we were allowed to keep them as souvenirs. It was a fantastic learning experience that I think everyone should try. You really get to know more about Korean culture and the history of ginseng and how it is produced. -continued on p38-

여행 당일 아침, 여러명의 사람들이 캠프워커에서 버스를 타고 금산으로 향했다. 휴게소에서 잠시 먹고 마시며 쉰 후에 매우 좋 았던 족욕과 함께 점심으로 뷔페를 먹고 대략 출발한 지 두세시 간 후에 축제 장소에 도착했다. 영어를 할 줄 아는 가이드가 우리 를 반겨주었고 어떤 방으로 안내해주었는데, 여기서 인삼 및 인 삼가공품에 대한 내용와 더불어 인삼엑스포와 엑스포의 역사에 대해서 영어로 된 짧은 영상을 보았다. 영상을 보고 난 후에 바로 가이드가 다른 층의 엑스포 센터로 데려갔고 비록 전시회가 완전 히 준비가 되지는 않았지만 내용을 자세하게 설명해 주었다. 필 자에게는 매우 흥미로웠고 전세계보다 거의 한 달이나 앞서서 VIP로 엑스포를 볼 수 있게 되어 큰 특혜를 받은 느낌이 들었다고 이야기할 수 있다. 엑스포장을 가로질러서 바깥의 전통인삼시장 에서 약 한 시간 정도를 보냈는데, 옅은 갈색의 생 인삼, 홍삼, 흑 삼 등을 맛 볼 수 있었다. 생인삼을 맛보고 나서는 앉아서 특별한 꿀 소스, 인삼막걸리와 함께 인삼튀김을 먹었다. 인삼튀김을 그 렇게 맛있을 줄은 전혀 몰랐다. 전통인삼시장 다음으로는 마지막 으로 버스를 타고 인삼소주공장으로 갔다. 여기서는 짧은 수업 을 듣고난 다음에 생인삼으로 꽃잎을 만들어서 뿌리에 붙이고 만 든 것을 특별한 술병에 넣고 25도짜리 한국 소주를 그 위로 부어 보았다. 술병이 만들고 나자 어느 꽃이 가장 진짜 같은지 잠시 품 평을 했고 기념품으로 가지고 올 수 있다. 정말 환상적인 배움의 기회였고 모든 사람이 가봐야 한다고 생각했다. 여러분은 한국의 문화와 인삼의 역사, 인삼이 어떻게 만들어지는지에 더 배워봐야 한다.

It’s all about the Ginseng

For those of you that don’t know it, Korea is considered the largest producer and worldwide distributor of ginseng and ginseng processed products in the world. The market is staggering and ginseng is used worldwide by millions for its medicinal and physical effects ranging from energy boosts, blood sugar reduction for diabetes, cholesterol reduction, stress, relaxation, even sexual dysfunction in men. Rigoletto (by Daegu Opera House) Oct. 12(Thu.) - 13(Fri.) 7:30pm, 14(Sat.) 3pm Rigoletto, a hunch-back, is the court jester for the Duke of Mantova. He's good at humiliating the courtiers for the amusement of the Duke. Later, the courtiers discover that Rigoletto is secretly living with Gilda, whom they believe to

be his mistress. In an attempt to humiliate Rigoletto, they kidnap Gilda and deliver her to the Duke. Consumed with the desire for revenge, Rigoletto contacts a murderous thief named Sparafucile, to kill the Duke. But Gilda, who fell in love with Duke, overheard the plot, and was severely injured by Sparafucile. The thief wraps her in a rug and gives it to Rigoletto. Thinking he has won vengeance at last on the Duke, Rigoletto paddles onto the river to dispose a rug. Then he hears the Duke singing in the distance, opens the rug, and to his horror he discovers his almost-dead daughter. Gilda dies, and the wretched Rigoletto wails that the curse has come to pass. Il trittico (The Triptych) (by Daegu Opera House/ National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan) Oct. 26(Thu.) 7:30pm / 28(Sat.) 3pm Il Tabarro (the Cloak) Michele, captain of a barge, lost his son in an unfortunate accident and grew apart from his younger wife, Giorgetta. Desperately holding down the fact that his wife does not love him anymore, Michele begins to spy on her, and

realized that his wife is having an affair. Luigi, the janitor of the barge, has enjoyed a secret love affair with Giorgetta every night; their signal being the lighting of a matchstick. When Luigi mistook Michele’s cigarette for a signal from Giorgetta, Michele murdered him. Covering the body with a cloak that wrapped the shoulders of the previously happy couple on a cold day, Michele reveals the body to his wife, who came out to meet Luigi. The terrible scream of Giorgetta resounds throughout the whole stage and the opera comes to an end. Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) Sister Angelica was shuttled off to the convent seven years earlier for having an illegitimate child. She has never been able to hold her child, but has eagerly waited for the day when she can see her child again. One day Angelica’s aunt, the Duchess, visits her to get a signature for a memorandum of miscarriage. The Duchess could not easily answer Angelica’s questions about her son, whom she hadn’t seen in seven years, but tells Angelica that he died two years ago. Devastated by regret and despair, Angelica said goodbye to her colleagues and killed herself

Rinuccio suggested to the discouraged relatives that Gianni Schicchi can find a solution to their problem. Disguising himself as Donati, Gianni Schicchi calls a notary and creates a new will. However, in this new will, Gianni Schicchi states that Donati will leave all his belongings to his “good friend, Gianni Schicchi”, who promptly kicks the family out of the house. Aida (by Daegu Opera House) Nov. 3(Fri.) 7:30pm – 4(Sat.) 3pm In Egypt, during the time of the pharaohs, there is war with Ethiopia. The Ethiopian King's daughter, Aida, has been captured and is now a slave in the service of the pharaoh’ daughter, Amneris. Radames loves Aida but is loved by Amneris. He is appointed general of the Egyptian army and returns in triumph, to be rewarded by the unwelcome hand of Amneris in marriage. Aida's father, Amonasro, has been taken prisoner, his life spared by the intercession of Radames. In the third act he entices his daughter to help him discover the plans of the Egyptian army, which she does in a meeting with Radames, whose conversation is overheard by Amonasro. Aida and Amonasro try to escape but Radames’ treachery is discovered and he condemned to death, to the dismay of Amneris. In the final scene he is immured in a stone tomb, where he is joined by Aida. As they die, Amneris, above the tomb, prays for peace for her beloved Radames. Korean Opera Immortal love (by Daegu Opera House) Nov. 10(Fri.) 7:30pm – 11(Sat.) 3pm Monk Haun comes to the house of Lee Yosin, who has recently given birth to Eungtae. He tells him that he must remove all of the trumpet creeper around the house and marry Eungtae to an ugly woman in order to keep Palmonksura, a sky garden keeper, from poisoning him.

Many years passed, and young Eungtae was attracted to the beauty of some trumpet creeper in full bloom along the Yeoni family’s wall, and fell in love with Yeoni at first sight. Yosin was surprised to see Eungtae holding the trumpet creeper in his hand that he received from Yeoni, and promptly asked the matchmaker to marry them quickly. Soon after, Palmoksura appeared and tried to attack Yeoni, because in a past life, she had stolen a flower from her sky garden. Eungtae tried to save Yeoni from Palmoksura’s attack, but the curse finally caught up with him and he died. In her sorrow, Yeoni plants trumpet creepers, eagerly looking forward to meeting her husband again. If enjoy opera, you may also like ‘Opera Concertante (a Concert)’ which is shorter than a traditional opera. Famous European singers will gather at the Daegu Opera House to perform. My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Things to remember while shopping

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
