OK, so most of you that have read my articles or seen my blogs and blips on social media know me as a food junkie, lover of eats and restaurants, dining, trying new tastes, checking out classic as well as new stuff, and taking a million pictures of it. Food is easy, you either like it or you don’t, right? But what about art? Especially Modern Art. Heck, I’m not the kind of guy that goes out to galleries or concerts, fashion shows, trendy events, wine tasting… rather, I like to ride my Harley, laugh with friends about ridiculous stuff and eat barbecue. So, when the Compass asked for someone to head out to the Daegu Art Museum and shoot it and write an article, I became nervous at first and waited for someone to reply for the chance. After about an hour, when there was no reply, I decided, why not take myself out of the normal comfort zone of eating food and absorb some culture instead, what the heck. Well, I must say, the Gallery certainly did not disappoint.

필자의 글이나 블로그, 소셜 미디어의 포스팅을 읽어본 사람들 중의 대부분은 필자를 음식에 미쳐 있는 사람으로 알고 있을 것 이다. 먹는 것과 식당을 사랑하고, 새로운 것을 먹어보고, 새로운 맛뿐만 아니라 옛날의 맛도 확인해보고, 수백만장의 음식 사진을 찍는 사람 말이다. 음식은 쉽다. 음식을 좋아하든 좋아하지 않든 말이다. 그렇지 않은가? 그렇다면 예술은 어떠한가? 특히 현대미 술 말이다. 필자는 갤러리나 콘서트, 패션쇼, 트렌디한 행사, 와인 시음회에 가는 그런 사람이 아니다. 차라리 필자의 할리를 타고, 친구들과 함께 재미있는 주제에 대해서 이야기하며 웃고 바베큐 를 먹는 스타일이다. 그래서 컴파스에서 대구미술관에 가서 취재 를 하고 글을 쓸 기자를 구할 때 처음에는 긴장이 되었고 다른 누 군가가 나서기를 기다렸다. 한 시간이 지나도 응답이 없자 결정 을 내렸다. 에라, 모르겠다, 편안하게 음식에 관해서만 쓰는 것을 벗어나 대신에 문화적인 내용도 흡수해보는 것을 어떨까하고 말 이다. 글쎄, 미술관은 결코 실망스럽지 않았다고 해야겠다.

After hopping on line 2, the Green line, I headed out to the Lions Stadium exit, then took the free shuttle bus, right at the Stadium exit, which takes guests up to the Museum and back, throughout the day. The shuttle is about a 5-minute ride, taking the route adjacent the Lions and World Cup Stadiums, ending up at the museum, a very modern and well designed, peaceful structure, nestled against the Southeastern Daegu Hillsides. The location is off the beaten path, but perfect. It’s also why I have missed it all these years. I know, that’s a poor excuse. 지하철 2호선을 타고 대공원역에서 삼성라이온즈 파크가 있는 출구로 나와서 출구 바로 앞에 있는 정류장에서 미술관의 무료셔 틀버스를 탔다. 셔틀 버스는 하루 종일 손님을 태우고 미술관과 지하철을 오간다. 셔틀버스를 타고 약 5분 정도 걸렸는데 라이온 즈 파크와 월드컵 경기장 옆 길을 지나 미술관에 도착했다. 미술 관은 매우 현대적이고 설계가 잘 된 평화로운 느낌의 건축물이었 고, 대구의 동남쪽에 있는 산비탈을 등지고 자리잡고 있었다. 위 치는 사람들의 발길이 잘 닿지 않는 곳이었지만 완벽했다. 필자 가 삼년 동안 이 곳에 오지 못 한 이유이기도 하다. 사실 형편없는 핑계라는 것을 잘 알고 있다. The outer grounds of the Museum are so nice, you could actually spend the day hanging out without ever going inside, really, it’s very tranquil, quiet and clean. When I emerged off the shuttle, I really felt like I was somewhere else; somewhere far from all the loud horns and annoying sounds of downtown that get on my nerves. Even the air seemed cleaner. I liked it already, and I hadn’t even gone inside. The structure is new, there are pools of water and lots of trees and landscaped gardens to behold, then, at the top of the stairs, next to the main entrance, you are greeted by a herd of giant red rabbits. 미술관 주위는 매우 좋다. 건물 안으로 들어가지 않고도 정말 하 루를 보낼 수 있을 것이다. 매우 평온하고 조용하며 깨끗하다. 셔 틀버스에서 내렸을 때 어디 다른 곳에 온 듯한 기분이 들었다. 신 경에 거슬리는 시끄러운 경적소리와 시내의 짜증나는 소음에서 멀리 떨어진 곳 말이다. 공기마저도 더 깨끗한 것 같았다. 미술관 내부에 들어가지 않았지만 벌써부터 미술관이 마음에 들었다. 미 술관 건물은 새 것이었고, 분수와 많은 나무, 멋지게 조경이 잘 된 정원이 있었다. 그리고 계단 꼭대기에 있는 미술관 정문 옆에서 는 커다란 빨간 토끼 떼가 여러분을 반겨줄 것이다. Yuan Goangming. The main concept behind GHOST is the concept of intangible beings that threaten or frighten people’s life in today’s world. After coming into the exhibit, I was immediately immersed in the theme of GHOST and what was going on and what it was that I could understand and so many things I wanted to grasp that the artists were trying to portray. As Mr. Spock would have said, “fascinating”. GHOST’s layout, picture / painted shot wall, chandeliers, Ruby Slipper video wall, Ghost around You display and how each image has been hand painted is amazingly creepy and cool at the same time. One of the things you will immediately notice is the repetitive sound coming from the Dorothy “ruby slippers” exhibit. It’s a slowed down version of her saying “There’s no place like home”, almost unrecognizable, until you hear it about twelve times, and realize what it is. Moving past the Dorothy corner on through the other rooms, you will see many more surrealistic, almost Picasso and Dali like work, which I found simply amazing, as I enjoy the abstract and the wild side. The Exhibit is a bit on the dark side, so if you plan on photographing it, be sure you have a good lens that has a very wide aperture, as they do not appreciate flash photography, as you might imagine, as it is very distracting. 안으로 들어가보았다. 안젤라 딘, 빌 비올라, 김두진, 김진, 이창 원, 임민욱, 오다니 모토히코, 이수경, 위안 광밍 등의 작가가 참 여하는 “고스트” 전이 현재 전시회의 메인이다. 고스트의 주제 는 오늘날 사람들의 삶을 위협하거나 두렵게 하는 무형의 존재이 다. 전시회장에 들어서자, 그 즉시 “고스트”라는 주제, 필자가 이

해할 수 있었던 과거에 일어나고 있었던 일과 과거의 일, 필자가 이해하고 싶었던 작가들이 나타내고자 한 다양한 것들에 몰두하 게 되었다. 스타트랙의 스팍이 말하듯 “훌륭하군(fascinating)” 이었다. 전시회의 레이아웃, 그냥 사진과 그림을 그린 사진으로 된 벽, 샹들리에, 루비신발을 나타낸 비디오 작품, “당신 주위를 맴돕니다.”라는 비디오아트, 직접 손으로 하나하나 칠해진 사 진 등은 놀랍게 오싹했지만 동시에 정말 멋졌다. 즉시 알아볼 수 있는 것들 중 하나는 도로시의 루비 신발이 나오는 작품에서 들 려오는 반복되는 소리였다. “집보다 나은 곳은 없어(There’s no place like home.)”가 느리게 재생되는 버전인데 열두번이나 반 복해서 듣고 그게 무슨 말인지 알아차릴 때까지 거의 못 알아들 을 뻔했다. 도로시 작품을 지나 다른 공간으로 들어서면, 피카소 와 달리 같이 훨씬 더 초현실적인 작품을 만나게 될 텐데 필자는 작품의 추상적이고 거친 면이 마음에 들어서 그저 멋지다고 생각 했다. 작품이 조금 어두운 공간에 있기 때문에 만약 이 작품을 촬 영하고자 한다면 매우 넓은 조리개가 있는 고급 렌즈를 사용하길 바란다. 여러분이 생각하듯이 미술관에서는 플래시를 사용한 촬 용은 금지되어 있고 여러 작품이 매우 넓게 흩어져 있다. Another really wonderful piece of work is the tsunami simulator, center hall, called the “Inferno”, by Motohiko Odani. The simulator from a distance, looked to me like a simple projected wall art design, however, as you walk up on the exhibit, you realize quickly that this is an actual simulation, interactive work of art, with a door on the side, where you enter, walk into a floor of mirrors and experience what it feels like to be inside a wave of water all around you. I will tell you, it’s not for the faint at heart or anyone with vertigo. Fantastic.

정말 훌륭했던 또 다른 작품은 중앙홀에 있었던 쓰나미를 재현 한 시뮬레이터, 모토히코 오다니 작가의 “인페르노”라고 하는 작 품이었다. 멀리서 보니 단순히 프로젝터를 이용한 벽면예술 같아 보였다. 하지만 전시물 옆에 나 있는 문을 통해 전시물 위로 올라 서게 되면 이 작품이 실제로 시뮬레이션이며 상호작용적인 예술 작품이라는 것을 바로 깨달을 것이다. 문을 통해 작품 안으로 입 장하여 거울로 된 바닥으로 들어서면 여러분을 덮치는 파도 속에 있는 기분이 어떤지 체험하게 될 것이다. 분명히 말하건대, 심장 이 약하거나 현기증이 있는 사람들을 위한 작품이 아니다. 그러 나 환상적이다. Another helpful tool you will find before or while you are at the museum is the DAEGU ART MUSEUM APP that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play Store for Apple or Android devices. With this app, you can simply walk through the museum and scan QR codes that are hanging throughout the exhibitions and it will bring up more information about specific artwork, history, imagery, artist information, and much more. I found this application very useful as I was making my way through the many rooms and areas throughout D Art. It’s free to use and is in English as well. 미술관에 가기 전 혹은 미술관에 가서 사용할 수 있는 또 다른 유 용한 것이 하나 있는데 바로 애플 스토어나 안드로이드 사용자를

위한 구글 플레이 스토어에서 다운받을 수 있는 대구미술관 앱니 다. 앱을 사용하면 미술관을 걸어다니며 전시회에 걸린 QR코드 를 스캔하면, 특정한 작품, 역사, 이미지, 작가 정보 등등의 더 많 은 정보를 불러온다. 필자는 미술관에서 많은 전시홀과 여러 곳 을 둘러봤기 때문에 이 앱이 매우 유용하다고 생각했다. 앱은 무 료이며 영어로도 되어 있다. There are many, many more exhibits to be seen at the Daegu Art Museum, in fact, I could write fifty pages, but I will not. My short article here only scratches the surface of the gems that are to be found if you take the time to come out and see for yourself. I highly recommend you jump on line 2 and head out to see GHOST while the exhibit is open, through September, it’s really something to see. You won’t regret it, and you can get a little culture for a change, like me! 대구미술관에는 더 많은 전시가 준비되어 있다. 사실 50장짜리 리뷰를 쓸 수도 있지만 그렇게 하지는 않겠다. 여기 이 짧은 기사 는 오직 여러분이 시간을 들여 직접 가서 볼 때만 찾을 수 있는 보 석의 겉면만을 살짝 이야기한 것이다. 9월 동안 전시회 ‘고스트’ 가 열려 있을 때에 지하철에 올라타서 전시회를 보러 가기를 강 력히 추천한다. 정말 볼 만하다. 결코 후회하지 않을 것이고 약간 의 문화생활로 여러분에게 변화도 생길 것이다. 필자처럼 말이 다!

You may already be familiar with the many traditional medicine shops of Yakjeon Alley, just off of the main drag downtown. The shop windows are stacked with wooden cases and woven baskets brimming with a multitude of aromatic herbs, plants and assorted, unidentified organic materials that most Westerners are probably unfamiliar with, but everything sure smells intriguing! 여러분은 시내의 중심가에서 조금 벗어난 약전골목에 있는 전통 한약방에 대해 이미 익숙할 수도 있을 것이다. 아마도 서양인들 에게는 익숙치 않은 수많은 약초와 식물, 여러가지 정체불명의 유기농 재료가 잔뜩 담긴 나무상자와 엮은 바구니가 가게의 진열 장에 쌓여 있다. 하지만 모든 것에서 흥미로운 냄새가 난다!

As I weaved my way through the narrow alleyways adjacent to Yakjeon Alley, I began to wonder where and when Korean traditional medicine originated. Fortunately, I had the jovial CEO, Mr. Park, of Jungang Hanyakbang (중앙한약방, 37 Janggwan-dong) who was a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of traditional Korean medicine to satiate my curiosity; and what better way to learn more about traditional Korean medicine than a hands-on medicine making experience? 약전 골목에 가까운 좁은 골목길을 통과하여 이리저리 돌아다니 면서, 문득 언제 어디서부터 한국의 한약이 시작되었는지 궁금해 지기 시작했다. 다행히도 필자의 호기심을 모두 해결해 주실 전 통 한약 분야의 지식과 경험이 풍부한 중앙한약방(장관동 37번 지)의 유쾌한 박선생님이 계셨다. 그리고 한약을 만들어보는 체 험보다 한약에 대해 배울 수 있는 더 좋은 방법이 있을까?

Korean medicine dates back over 400 years, and like modern medicine, was traditionally used to boost health and treat illnesses, as medicine typically does. Unfortunately, with the advent of modern pharmaceuticals, the practice of Korean traditional medicine has been dying, as has interest among Koreans and foreigners alike. Mr. Park is hoping to change that and by offering the handson experience, he is looking to revitalize Yakjeon Alley and attract more visitors with a fun and interesting experience. Mr. Park speaks English very well, which is not common for those who practice traditional medicine. 한국의 전통 한약은 400년 이상으로 거슬러 올라가며, 현대 약물 처럼 전통적으로 건강을 증진시키고 병을 치료했다. 약이 대체로 그러하듯 말이다. 안타깝게도 현대 제약회사의 등장으로 한약방 의 업무가 줄어들게 되었고, 한국인과 외국인의 관심이 모두 줄 어들었다. 박선생님은 이러한 현실에 변화가 생기길 바라며, 체 험활동을 제공함으로써 약전골목을 활성화시키고 재미있고 흥 미로운 경험으 제공하으로써 더 많은 방문객을 끌어들일 수 있기 를 기대하고 있다. 박선생님은 영어를 매우 잘 하시는데 전통의 학인들에게 흔하지 않은 점이다.

Mr. Park would be showing me how to make Hak Cho Dan, a name derived from his grandfather’s pen name. First, I was given a brief overview of the ingredients we would be using, including deer antler – to aid in blood production as well as increase energy and red ginseng – to strengthen the body’s immunity, among other ingredients. 박선생님은 학초단을 만드는 방법으로 보여주고 싶어 하셨는데, 선생님의 할아버지가 쓰시던 필명에서 유래된 이름이었다. 가장 먼저,다양한 재료들 중에서도 기를 강화시키고 피의 생성도 도와 주는 녹용과 몸의 면역력을 강화시켜주는 홍삼을 포함하여 우리 가 사용할 재료에 대해 간단한 소개를 받았다. In general, Hak Cho Dan is used to increase concentration and energy, not to mention, liver and kidney function, which is good news for the nights when you may have consumed one too many drinks from GoGo Vinyl. Natural hangover cure, anyone? 보통 학초단은 집중력과 기, 말할 것도 없이 간과 신장의 기능을 높여주는데 사용된다. 이는 고고에서 거나하게 술을 마실 수도 있는 밤을 생각한다면 희소식이나 다름없다. 천연 숙취해소제인 데 필요한 사람 있는가? -continued on p14-

The six ingredients are mixed with honey to create the medicine “dough” or base. Mr. Park’s dexterity made the whole process of cutting, weighing and rolling the dough into balls seem easy, but it does take some practice and patience. The dough is nutty, yet sweet, thanks to the added honey. As far as medicine goes, Hak Cho Dan reigns superior in taste. 약의 반죽 혹은 베이스를만들기 위해 꿀과 함께 여섯가지의 재료 를 섞는다. 박선생님의 손재주는 자르고 계량하고 반죽을 동그랗 게 빚는 모든 과정을 매우 쉬운 듯 보이게 했다. 하지만 확실히 연 습과 인내가 필요했다. 반죽은 견과류 맛이 났지만 꿀을 첨가해 서 달콤하기도 했다. 약에 있어서 학초단이 맛의 측면에서 훨씬 더 뛰어나다. A growing number of medicine shops use machines automate the rolling process, but with Mr. Park, you have the opportunity to do it yourself, the traditional way. Spa Valley has started its summer season. It contains three main areas: ‘Water Park Spa Valley’, ‘ Nature Park’ with gardens and a small zoo, and ‘ Hotel de foRe”. In addition, the resort has been chosen as one of the “Wellness Tour 25” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization. It is also the only resort of its kind in Daegu. Last year, Dong-won Yang, a professional flyboarder, performed a flyboard show for the first time in Daegu and the sport became very popular. He won the grand slam at the Flyboard® World Championship in 2017 and other international competitions, and will perform again this summer. Since it’s a water park, you should not miss all the attractions that they offer. You’ll slide into a 15-meter-high ‘Super Bowl’ and feel the thrill of going into a blackhole. ‘Boomerang’ will make you feel the speed of flight and a boomerang effect. There are many good photo spots located within Lions Park. Samsung wanted to work with to find the best photo spots in the park, and held an Instagram event from May 24th to June 25t. From these recommendations, they made their final choices for best photo spots; the LaPark’s plaza, the middle of SKY free seats, the central ticket box, and more. On June 24th, Samsung held their first ‘Player’s Day’. The first player highlighted on the special day was Jawook Gu, who is expect to be a successor of Seungyup Lee, who announced his retirement this year. The stadium also had the highest number of visitors of this season so far, on that day. Samsung offered special t-shirts for free and held an autograph event, an auction with players’ items, and held a photo opp with players. Fans have supported Samsung despite their poor performance early this year, so the club has prepared special services for them. On July 8th, ‘Ground Catchball’ allowed fans to play catch with Pil-Jun Jang, Chang-min Shim and Seung-hyun Lee. Also, they took photos with Jeong-hyeok Kim, Choong-yeon Choi and Seong-yoon Kim after the game. They had more events after the game. The Alignment Society A Call to Local Artists, Creatives and Makers

The Alignment Society recently hosted Catharsis, the first in a series of quarterly events promoting the arts, community and culture. The Alignment Society is the collaborative effort of singer-songwriter Ami Kim and I. The intention behind the Alignment Society Project is to foster a supportive and dynamic community of artists and creatives in Daegu—inclusive and accessible to both expats and Koreans. 어라인먼트 소사이어티(Alignment Society)는 최근에 카타르시 스(Catharsis)라는 행사를 개최했는데, 미술과 공동체, 문화를 홍 보하기 위한 분기별 행사 중 첫번째였다. 어라인먼트 소사이어티 는 싱어송라이터인 아미 킴과 필자가 협동한 산물이다. 이 모임 의 의도는 대구의 예술가와 작가들의 지지적이고 역동적인 공동 체 육성하고자 함이다. 그리고 이 곳은 모두를 위한 곳이며 외국 인과 한국인 모두에게 열려있다. 24

The Alignment Society

Back in my hometown of Chicago, I relished the vibrant arts community and the fantastic events they frequently held. I loved attending the array of events hosted throughout the city because I met diverse and interesting individuals, ranging from creatives to art appreciators to those that were there to enjoy the ambiance. The old adage says that we don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone, and this expression resonated upon moving to Daegu. I quickly realized the art scene as I knew it was nonexistent, or at least not easily accessible to expats due to the language gap. Thankfully, I’ve been fortunate to meet individuals in Daegu that share a passion for creation and expression, leading to some great collaborations. One of those collaborations was with Ami Kim, the other half of this project. The interview I did of her yielded a great friendship, and I often found myself expressing a desire for a non-pretentious, welcoming art environment both of us could be part of. Ami and I decided to start the Alignment Society to fill the need for an accessible creative and cultural scene in Daegu—one promoting a DIY approach towards art, community and collaboration. http://www.daegucompass.com

필자의 고향인 시카고에 있을 때는 활기찬 예술 공동체와 그들이 자주 열었던 환상적인 행사를 매우 즐겨 찾았다. 온 도시에서 열 리는 여러 행사에 가는 것도 굉장히 좋아했는데 다양하고 흥미로 운 사람들을 만날 수 있기 때문이었다. 예술가들에서부터 그 분 위기를 즐기기 위해 있었던 예술을 감상가들까지 다양했다. 옛 속담에 이르길, 우리는 우리가 가진 것이 사라지기 전까지 그 것 에 대해 감사하지 않는다고 했다. 그리고 그 표현은 대구에 이사 를 오면서 다시 한 번 되새기게 되었다. 필자가 알고 있었던 그러 한 예술씬은 존재하지 않거나 혹은 언어의 벽으로 인해 외국인들 이 쉽게 접근할 수 없다는 것을 곧 깨달았다. 감사하게도 창작과 표현에 대한 열정을 나누는 대구사람들을 만날 수 있게 되어서 운이 좋았고, 이는 꽤 멋진 콜라보레이션을 이끌어 냈다. 그러한 콜라보 중의 하나가 이 프로젝트의 또 다른 기둥인 아미 킴과 함 께 한 것이었다. 필자가 했던 그녀의 인터뷰는 훌륭한 우정을 쌓 게해 주었고, 스스로가 종종 우리 둘 모두가 일원이 될 수 있고 가 식적이지 않고 환대하는 분위기의 예술 환경을 갖고 싶어하는 마 음을 내보인다는 것을 알게 되었다. 우리는 대구 내에서의 접근 이 쉽고 창조적이며 문화적인 씬에 대한 필요성을 충족시키기 위 해 어라인먼트 소사이어티를 시작하기로 결정했다. 미술과 공동 체, 콜라보레이션에 대해 스스로 다가갈 수 있다는 것을 홍보하 는 것이다.

Catharsis marked the launch of the Alignment Society Project. The gathering was held in Daegu’s famous Kim Kwang-Seok Music Road to showcase the work of local artists. The summer edition served as a platform to celebrate the launch of my first self-published book while featuring live music, poetry, visual art, and dance performances. Catharsis was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Approximately 70+ guests attended the occasion to soak up art, share space, and socialize over drinks. Some of the guests included Korean friends and coworkers, and their feedback was very insightful. They all said a variation of the same thing—Catharsis was a totally new and unique concept to them. They explained that attending events that proudly celebrate a DIY attitude towards creation and expression was foreign, at least in the landscape of the Daegu they know. The Korean attendees I spoke with found Catharsis refreshing. -continued on p26-

카타르시스는 어라인먼트 소사이어티 프로젝트의 시작을 기념 하는 자리였다. 모임은 지역 예술가의 작품을 보여주기 위해 유 명한 대구의 김광석 거리에서 했다. 여름 행사는 라이브 음악, 시, 시각예술, 댄스 공연 등이 함께한 가운데 필자가 자비를 들여 처 음으로 출판한 책의 발간을 축하하는 자리의 역할을 하기도 했 다. 카타르시스는 압도적으로 긍정적인 반응을 얻게 되었다. 대 략 70명이 넘는 손님들이 한잔 하며 미술에 흠뻑 젖어들고 공간 을 나누며 서로 어울리기 위해 행사에 왔다. 손님들 중 몇몇은 한 국인 친구와 동료를 데려오기도 했고, 그들의 피드백은 매우 통 찰력이 있었다. 그들 모두가 조금씩 다르지만 같은 말을 하고 있 었다. 카타르시스는 그들에게 완전히 새롭고 독특한 것이었다고 말이다. 그리고 창작과 표현에 대한 DIY적인 태도를 자랑스럽게 기념하는 이벤트에 참가한 것은 매우 이국적이라고 설명했다. 적 어도 그들이 아는 한 대구라는 풍경 안에서는 말이다. 필자와 이 야기를 나눴던 한국인 참가자들은 카타르시스가 신선하다고 했 다. Other event-goers gushed about the social, expressing how essential such events are to the Daegu community. As such, two similar events to Catharsis will follow suit, one held in the fall and the other in the winter. The Alignment Society wants to expand the programming. We believe talented individuals in Daegu and other parts of Korea can benefit from the platform offered by this project. Our goal is to feature foreign and Korean creatives along with a diverse set of art forms and mediums to establish a thriving creative community in South Korea. The Maemil

Buckwheat noodles (called maemil in Korean, or you may have heard them called soba in Japan) are a healthy alternative to wheat noodles and rice. While many people think that buckwheat is a cereal grain, it is actually a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb and sorrel making it a suitable substitute for grains for people who are sensitive to wheat or other grains that contain protein glutens. Buckwheat is a very good source of manganese and a good source of copper, magnesium, dietary fiber and phosphorus. 메밀 국수(일본에서는 소바라고 하는 국수를 들어봤을 것이다.) 는 밀가루 국수와 쌀을 대신하는 건강한 음식이다. 많은 사람들 이 메밀을 씨리얼 곡물이라고 생각하지만 사실 루바브와 소렐과 관련되어 있는 식물의 열매 씨앗이다. 그리고 글루텐 단백질을 포함하고 있는 밀가루나 다른 곡물에 민감한 사람들에게는 일반 곡물을 대신할 수 있는 알맞은 대체물이다. 메밀은 망간을 매우 풍부하게 가지고 있으며, 구리, 마그네슘, 식이섬유, 인 등도 많이 포함하고 있다. The protein in buckwheat is a high quality protein, containing all eight essential amino acids, including lysine. It also has resistant fiber. Resistant fiber is a compound shown to lower blood sugar after meals, help weight loss, reduce food cravings and improve diabetes.

메밀에 들어있는 단백질은 리신을 포함한 여덟가지의 필수 아미 노산이 들어 있는 고품질의 단백질이다. 또한 저항성 식이섬유도 갖고 있는데, 식사 후에 혈당을 떨어뜨리고, 몸무게를 줄이는 데 도움을 주고, 식욕을 억제해주며 당뇨병을 개선시켜주는 화합물 이다. This downtown restaurant on Yangyeonsi herbal street is a great place to take those healthy foodie friends. The Maemil (더 메밀) sits on the second floor building near Hyundae Department Store, but closer to the medicinal street arch that welcomes you from the main road near by. The interior is simple and refreshing; similar in style and taste to the food it serves. The specialties of course are the buckwheat dishes, but they do serve duck as well as long as you order in advance (20,000won) as well as pork bossam (30,000). Owners, Jang Yangran and Yun Byeonghun, started this restaurant not even a year ago and it already is a local favorite as well as a tourist favorite. It has been featured in Japanese tourism magazines and Daegu local tourism brochures.

시내 약전골목에 있는 이 식당은 건강한 음식을 선호하는 친구들 을 데려가기에 안성맞춤인 곳이다. 더메밀은 현대백화점 근처에 있는 건물 2층에 자리하고 있는데, 근처 대로에 있는 약전골목의 대문과 더 가깝다. 실내는 단순하고 상쾌한 분위기인데, 나오는 음식의 스타일 및 맛과 비슷한 느낌이다. 주메뉴는 메밀요리이지 만, 미리 주문하면 돼지보쌈(3만원)뿐만 아니라 오리요리(2만원) 도 제공한다. 주인인 장양란씨와 윤병훈씨가 식당을 시작한 지 일 년이 채 되지 않았지만 벌써 관광객들뿐만 아니라 대구시민의 사랑도 받고 있다. 일본 관광 잡지와 대구의 지역 관광 브로슈어 에도 실렸다. Our family ordered the spicy cold buckwheat noodles (7,000 won), as the weather directed us to get something refreshing. For colder days, the menu also provides hot dishes to warm you up, and they seem to be the more popular dishes there. The icey dish did not disappoint, it was sour and cold in quite a refreshing way, and with the sweet pickled side dishes complimented the food well. Pickled lotus root and acorn jelly was also provided.

날씨가 기운을 차릴 만한 것을 주문하도록 만드는 바람에 우리 가족은 비빔묵밥(7천원)을 주문했다. 더 추운 날에는 몸을 녹일 수 있도록 따뜻한 음식도 제공하는데 식당에서는 따뜻한 메뉴가 더 인기 있는 것 같았다. 얼음같이 차가운 음식은 우리를 실망시 키지 않았다. 기운을 잘 차릴 수 있게끔 새콤하고 시원했으며, 음 식을 보완해주는 달큼한 절임 반찬이 함께 나왔다. 연근절임과 도토리묵도 나왔다. What brought it all together however was the mushroom buckwheat jeon (7,000 won) we ordered. It was superb, and offset the tanginess of the icy soup well. The meal was complete with the complimentary Dutch coffee and tea they offered. You know the food is really good when there are a few minutes of silence as the meal begins. Mouths are full to the brim and there are gratifying grunts being made as we indulge our senses. This place was a nice find and I will definitely be returning. I am not even done with my dish and I am already planning when I will try the meat dishes to compliment the noodles. -continued on p30-

그러나 식사를 완성시켜준 것은 버섯메밀전(7천원)이었다. 정말 최고의 맛이었고, 차가운 묵밥의 새큼한 맛도 상쇄시켜주었다. 식사는 식당에서 제공하는 더치커피와 차로 끝이 났다. 식사가 시작되고 몇 분간 침묵이 흐를 때면 음식이 정말 맛있다는 것을 여러분도 알 것이다. 입은 음식으로 가득하고 모든 감각이 충족 되며 ‘으음’하는 만족스러운 신음소리가 나온다. 더 메밀은 잘 찾 아낸 식당이었고 반드시 다시 방문할 것이다. 음식을 다 먹지도 않았지만 벌써 언제 다시 와서 국수를 보완해 줄 수 있는 고기를 먹어볼 것인지 계획을 세웠다. To get to this tasty place, head behind Hyundae Department store to the main medicinal street (or from the Police Station near the fountain, head east towards the Starbucks where medicinal street begins). Head east, away from downtown as if you were heading to Seomun market, and past the beautiful Jaeil church. On your right, you will eventually see an apartment building (희도아파트 Hyedo Apartments) with a parking lot in front. The small building next to it is where the restaurant is on the second floor. Artist Spotlight An Interview With Kyle Decker

Kyle Decker is the author of a novel entitled Cannon Fodder, lead singer of a punk band called Food for Worms, an advocate for LiNK (Liberty in North Korea), and English teacher in Daegu. As a graduate of writing from Drake University in Iowa, he came to Daegu four years ago and has since written articles for the Daegu Compass, Angle and bROKe in Korea. 카일 데커는 ‘캐논 포더(Cannon Fodder)’라고 하는 소설의 작 가이자 푸드 포 웜즈(Food for Worms)라는 펑크 밴드의 리드 싱 어이며 링크(LiNK, Liberty in North Korea)의 지지자이고 대구 에서 영어강사를 하고 있다. 아이오와의 드레이크 대학에서 작문 을 전공했기에 4년 전 대구에 와서 그 때부터 대구 컴퍼스, 앵글, bROKe를 위해 기사를 써 왔다.

Kyle, could you briefly tell us what brought you here to Daegu, Korea? 카일, 이 곳 한국의 대구에 어떻게 오게 되었는지 간단하게 설명 해 줄 수 있는가? I’m from the South suburbs of Chicago, was living in the city for a while and coming up on 30. I’d always wanted to live in Asia…I researched and compared a number of countries and wound up in Korea. 나는 시카고의 남부 외곽지역에서 왔고, 도시 지역에서 한동안 살다가 30살이 되었다. 항상 아시아에서 살아보고 싶었기에 조사 를 하며 수많은 나라를 비교해봤고 한국을 고르게 되었다.

When did you write Cannon Fodder and what were you trying to say? 캐논 포더는 언제 썼으며 무엇을 말하고 싶었나? I wrote it right after I finished college when I was working at a Marriott Hotel and so much of the corporate jargon/logic was really strange to me. I was kind of a factotum in the food service department. The novel is a satire of corporate culture more so than the capitalist system. It hits on the idea that we all give up a piece of our soul when we take certain jobs and that everyone, even these underling villain types, has a story to tell. I’ve spent the last couple years working on a hardboiled mystery novel set in 1981 Los Angeles amid the burgeoning hardcore punk scene. When I started working on it, there was not a lot of material researchwise on that time and place…but within the last year or two, a lot of key people from that scene have released memoirs and now with so much more material, I’ve taken the book back to the research phase. 1981년 LA의 급증하는 하드코어 펑크씬를 배경으로 하드보 일드한 미스테리 소설을 쓰는데 지난 몇 년을 보냈다. 그 소 설을 쓰기 시작했을 때, 그 당시와 장소들에 대한 자료 조사 같은 것들이 별로 없었다. 그러나 지난 몇 년 동안 그 분야의 많은 주요 인물들이 회고록을 냈고 이제는 훨씬 더 많은 자 료가 있어서 조사단계로 돌아갔다.

You’re the lead singer of a punk band; do you ever find that people don’t know how to take your music? 당신은 펑크 밴드의 리드싱어이기도 하다. 당신의 음악을 어떻게 받아들여야 할 지 모르는 사람을 본 적이 있는가? Well, when we started Food for Worms (https:// foodforworms.bandcamp.com) three years ago, there were a lot more punk bands in Daegu than there are now. When we started, there were a lot more issues with people not knowing how to take our music, particularly when we were playing with other expat bands who were very far removed genre-wise from us. Lately though we’ve been playing in Seoul at a club called GBN up in Mullae, which is a designated punk rock club…everyone going in there knows what to expect. In Daegu, we’ve been playing at Club Rad a lot…and they put on shows of the hardcore, punk and metal variety. 글쎄, 우리가 푸드 포 웜즈(https://foodforworms.bandcamp. com)를 3년 전에 시작했을 때, 지금보다 대구에는 훨씬 더 많은 펑크 밴드가 있었다. 그리고 우리 음악을 어떻게 받아들여야할 지 모르는 사람들과 더 많은 문제가 있었다. 특히, 우리가 하는 장 르의 방향과는 완전히 다른 외국인 밴드와 함께 연주를 할 때 말 이다. 하지만 최근에는 서울의 문래에 있는 GBN 클럽에서 연주 를 해 왔다. 이 곳은 펑크락 클럽으로 만들어진 곳이라서 이 곳에 오는 모든 사람들은 무엇을 기대해야할 지 알고 있다. 대구에서 는 클럽 래드에서 많이 연주했으며 여기서는 하드코어, 펑크, 메 탈 종류의 음악을 공연한다. Concerning the specific Food for Worms’ song "Bite the Pillow" what are you aiming at? 푸드 포 웜즈의 노래인 ‘바이트 더 필로우’를 대해서 말인데, 무 엇을 목적으로 한 것인가?

It’s definitely a shot at rising student loan costs. The title of the song comes from my old college roommate. My mother was asking him if he’d have any loans to repay and he said ‘yeah, I got a letter from my bank which said, bite the pillow, it’s going in dry.’ I thought about that for years…seven years later I worked that into a song. 분명히 그 노래는 학생들의 대출 융자금이 상승하는 것에 향한 한 방이다. 노래의 제목은 나의 옛날 대학 룸메이트에게서 유래 된 것이다. 나의 어머니는 그 친구에게 갚아야 할 대출있냐고 물 었고 친구는 이렇게 말했다. “네, 은행에서 편지가 왔는데 이렇게 되어 있었어요. ‘베개를 단단히 물어. 엄청 고생하고 고통스러울 테니까.’” 이 것에 대해 몇 년이나 생각을 했어요. 7년이 지나서 노래로 만들었네요.” As your time in Korea begins to wind down, what’s your next step? 한국에서의 시간이 서서히 끝나가고 있는데, 다음 계획은 어떻게 되는가? Soon, I’ll head up to Seoul to take the Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency…I’m in the process of applying for a Masters degree in Special Education at the University of Illinois in Chicago. My parents still live in Illinois so I can still apply and get in-state tuition but [they’re] one year out from moving to Tennessee so I need to act now if I want to take advantage of that. I will be leaving by the end of the year if I get accepted. 곧 있으면 일리노이주의 수학능력시험을 치기 위해 서울로 올라 갈 것이다. 지금은 시카고 일리노이 대학교의 특수교육 석사과정 에 지원 과정에 있다. 부모님이 여전히 일리노이에 계셔서 그 곳 대학에 지원을 하고 ‘주내 거주민’ 수준의 학비를 낼 수 있다. 하 지만 부모님이 1년 후 쯤에 테네시로 이사를 가실 거라서 그 혜택 을 받으려면 지금 움직여야 한다. 만약 입학허가가 난다면 올해 말쯤 한국을 떠날 것이다.

What are some of the things you like and/or dislike about living in Daegu? 대구에 살면서 좋았던 것과 좋지 않았던 점은 무엇인가? One thing I like about Daegu is that it’s centrally located so you can travel to just about anywhere in Korea from here. I also like that I can go hiking on a whim. It’s quieter than Seoul where it’s a constant sensory overload. Daegu is a little conservative for my tastes and getting people to come to a show one subway stop away from downtown is almost like pulling teeth. 대구에 대해 좋아하는 것들 중 하나는 한국의 가운데쯤 위치 해 있다는 것이다. 그래서 대구에서 한국의 어디든 가 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 즉흥적으로 등산을 갈 수 있는 것도 좋았다. 그리고 계속해서 감각에 과부하가 걸리는 서울보다 조용하 다. 내게 대구는 조금 보수적이고 시내에서 한 정거장 떨어진 곳에서 하는 공연에도 사람들을 오게하는 것을 매우 어려운 일다. Lastly, what are you reading right now and what music are you listening to? 마지막으로 최근 읽고 있는 책과 듣고 있는 음악은 무엇인가? I am reading Kafka on the Shore. There’s also the local Korean hardcore band from Seoul called the Kitsches. They just put out their first full-length album a couple months ago (https://thekitsches.bandcamp.com/ album/the-kitsches) and I like listening to a lot of Ska music in the summer. The author of the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home, tackles the critical question: How do we change? Gretchen Rubin's answer: through habits. It's sitting (actually, it's more like looming) on my shelf, daring me to dip a toe in. It's 1266 pages of closely spaced 12pt font with zero illustrations. Given that its author is best known for his graphic novels, that's no small deal. It has a larger word count than the bible, and it features a 400 odd page sequence of a young boy choking on a cough lozenge. It's Alan Moore's Jerusalem. - Richard 이 책은 내게 자기를 읽어보라며 책장에 앉아있다. The Alchemist, originally written in 1988, it became an international best seller a few years back. I'm currently reading Human Acts by Han Kang. It's a novel about a young boy who was killed during the uprising of Gwangju after Park Chung-Hee's assassination in 1979. It takes place in 1980 when martial law, pushed by ChungHee during his reign, suppressed the city. The author is also a resident of Gwangju which makes the novel feel more close to home. There is a cemetery and a memorial park in Gwangju to commemorate the lives lost, 5.18 Memorial Park. - Devon 지금 한강의 ‘소년이 온다’를 읽고 있다. 이 소설은 1979년 박정 희 전 대통령이 암살 당한 후에 일어난 광주민주화운동 중에 살 해당한 어린 소년에 관한 것이다. 광주민주화운동은 계엄령이 광주를 억압하던 1980년에 일어났는데, 그 계엄령은 박정희 대 통령이 통치하던 때에 강제로 통과가 되었다. 작가 역시 광주시 민이라서 소설이 더 가까이 느껴진다. 광주에는 민주화운동 동안 돌아가신 분들을 추모하기 위해 공동묘지와 기념공원이 있다. 바 로 5.18기념공원이다. - 데본 I’ve been taking advantage of my Amazon Prime Reading account, which acts like a free lending library. The Fantastic Fable of Peter Able is a fantasy novel - with a twist. Peter is a Boy Wizard. Or rather, Peter is an adult Boy Wizard who lives in the land of Fiction. His Real World author has abruptly concluded his series, and Peter is suddenly free to explore his world, liberated from the almighty Plotline. Of course the transition into free will isn't exactly an easy one, and there are plenty of Twists and Turns to keep our Protagonist guessing along the way. After all, this is Fiction. It has been compared to Toy Story but for book lovers. Muju Firefly Festival

Visitors can enjoy traditional craft culture, trout fishing with bare hands, dance troupes, and a variety of music and street theatre. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Things to remember while shopping

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat.
