<NEGUA & VSP_The light and Sound>, the second exhibition of international exchange from the Daegu Art Museum, looks into modern art combined with scientific technology. KALYPSO (Philipp Dreber, Alessandreo De Matteis, Michael Baumann), a modern German art group, and Gwon Hyeokgyu, a media artist from Dageu, participated in this exhibition. Kalypso introduces a unique media installation work, ‘NEGUA'. It interprets the ‘eyes’, a basic medium of visual arts, in a new way through mapping technology. Gwon, who has received attention with his sound installation works, presents VSP(Virtual Sound Project). This work converts human’s subtle movement into sound, and is an interactive work completed by visitors’ participation. 소리 설치작업으로 주목받고 있는 권혁규 작가는 이번 전시에서 VSP(가상 소리 프로젝트 Virtual Sound Project) 작업을 소개한다. -continued on p10-

Social and political issues surrounding the landscape,

『La vie en rose』

Hong Soon Myung, who won the 17th Lee In-Seung Art Award in 2016, has built an original and experimental body of work, over a long time, in a wide range of areas such as installation, printing, stereoscopic, media art and sculpture. This exhibition introduces his works (3,500pieces) from a major series that he has worked on over the last 10 years. It includes 4 themes: <Side scape>, <Memory scape>, <Ordinary Monument> and <La Vie En Rose>. <Side scape> is the longest series that Hong worked on. The artist re-edits media reports collected on and offline, and then presents the surrounding scenery that excludes the information that the news wants to convey, implying that facts can generally be found elsewhere. <Memory Scape> includes sculpture and painting, combined with a canvas and contains an image, extracted from a press photograph, of objects collected at various accident sites. http://www.daegucompass.com

The series of <Ordinary Monument> includes objects wrapped in transparent wrap that were collected from Paengmok-hang Harbor, where the Sewol Ferry Sewol. The piece captures the last breath of the victims rising into air bubbles and the feeling of anger and sadness that are transparently cohesive.

Chill Out and Warm Up

Elybaden Spa’s Shinwolseong-branch

• Written and Photographed by Kyle Decker Translated by Yujeong Lee SPONSORED POST

Cue people constantly quoting Game of Thrones. You know the line I mean. The one about winter. As the temperature drops and the days get shorter our stress and anxiety increase. Oh yeah, it’s about to get gloomy up in this piece. With it being well into fall it’s time to start thinking about how to stay warm and stress free in the coming months. And that’s what Elybaden Spa in Wolseong-dong is for.

Elybaden gained some notoriety over the summer for its rooftop infinity pool, but the current daily highs make it difficult to enjoy outdoor swimming. Luckily Elybaden offers a variety of other features including men’s and women’s saunas, an indoor family pool, a jjimjilbang, fitness center, a media-room, and even a food court.

Chill Out and Warm Up

Once you check in at Elybaden and pay the ‎₩13,000 (weekend, including jimjilbang, kids pool and sauna for adults) for entrance you are given a locker key. However, this key is for a great deal more than locking up your valuables. When you check-in you can pre-pay and add credit onto your key, or have charges added as you go and pay at checkout. This key can be used to pay for things at the various snack shops, the food court, and the massage chairs in the jjimjilbang. Simply stick your key into the paypad and the charges will be added up for you to pay at checkout.

The locker rooms are clean and spacious. Ditto for the lockers themselves. There’s a snack shop where you can purchase some drinks and light food, there’s even a barber on staff. The jjimjilbang area has a very modern design. The high ceilings give the room a very open feeling, setting it apart from some of the older spas which can feel claustrophobic. There are floor-to-ceiling windows with northern exposure in the main room that let in plenty of natural light. The balconies give you you the feeling of a modern loft. If you’re the type that prefers a little more privacy there are cubby holes you can crawl into. For anyone that’s had a rough day at the office, a row of massage chairs line the wall and offer intense twentyminute rubdowns while still providing a good view of one of the large flat screen televisions.

Against the southern wall is a pair of attached domed brick sweat lodges. There are two sections: really hot, and extremely hot. Next to the southern windows is a row of thermotherapy lamps to bring some relief to your aching muscles. On the north wall are three small rooms: a steam room sauna, a dry heat sauna with a gravel floor, and a “media room.” The media room is set to a perfectly comfortable 24 degrees celsius and contains a tile bench circling a projector and a domed ceiling. The room acts like a mini-planetarium and displays images of deep space while soothing music plays softly in the background.

14

Chill Out and Warm Up

The spas have the usual offerings: saunas and pools of various temperatures. Massage jets focusing on numerous parts of the body, and showers. The architecture is different from that of the jjimjilbang area and combines elements of a traditional bathhouse with a more modern feel. There are columns and arches and tiles which give a more traditional feel, but things like floor to ceiling windows, and lighting fixtures bring the twenty-first century into the mix. Some more unique offerings are hot water barrel tubs, and a red ginseng tea bath, which combines the relaxing feeling of a hottub with the relaxing feeling of smelling a freshly boiled cup of tea.

http://www.daegucompass.com

The food court offers coffee, beer, fried chicken, and traditional Korean dishes at reasonable prices. An order of fried chicken will cost you about 17,000 won, a draft of Max runs 3,500, which is no more than a standard restaurant. Just next to the food court is a “multiroom.’ Which is basically like a jjimjilbang but with a projector and big screen that shows family movies. There is also a children’s playground to help make Elybaden a great way to spend the day with the family. Whatever the sources of your stress Elybaden spa is here to help offer some relief. Elybaden Spa combines both traditional and modern ways to relax and ease your tensions, and it’s easy to spend a whole day there. I can think of very few things more relaxing than a spa day with chicken and beer in one convenient location, and even fewer that are legal.

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2017

38 To get there : I went out Sangin exit 1 and took a left at the second major intersection. It’s across from the CGV, the entrance to the building has two stone elephants. GoDo Retro Lounge Bar and Café An Elegant Downtown Gem • Written by Rikus Matt Wessels Photographed by Rikus Matt Wessels and Joseph Taejin Park Translated by Yujeong Lee

Tucked away in downtown Daegu is a Lounge Bar and Café with an impeccably designed interior and a unique sense of sophistication and elegance. GoDo Retro is a Daegu gem, and an establishment with a tasteful collection of wines and champagnes, delicious food, and a classy atmosphere that is worth every Won. The exposed brick interior and retro design, combined with the atmospheric music, and the moody lighting, make GoDo Retro the perfect spot to hang out whilst savoring some of the finer flavors of life. You can enjoy some cocktails and wine with a group of friends at a dining style table, relax with a date in leather lounge chairs, or sit on the patio overlooking the street below whilst appreciating the aromas of Chilean wine and Mediterranean inspired food. The very charismatic owner of GoDo Retro, Joseph Taejin Park, is not a big drinker, but he has always had a taste for fine wine, good champagne, and an elegantly brewed cup of coffee. Joseph wanted to create a space where friends could hang out and enjoy the flavors and aromas of wines from various continents, chilled champagne, and good food, without having to go overboard with the drinking.

GoDo Retro Lounge Bar and Café

http://www.daegucompass.com

The history of GoDo Retro goes back to 1997 when Joseph’s father had a gastropub in Dongseongro named “Godot”, after the elusive character in Samuel Beckett’s novel “Waiting for Godot”. Joseph remembers this time well! People in their 40’s all knew about this unique gastropub, and it is a sentiment that he has held on to and that drove him to open his own place. After graduating High School Joseph did various part-time jobs at coffee shops, bars, and restaurants, where he learned more about the industry so that he could perfect it once he opened his own place. He decided to have a play on words and use his father’s place’s name “Godot”, but dropping the ‘t’. In Hanja 고도(GoDo) means Old City, the city, and style he remembers when people would drive up in smart cars and wear their best suits. He wanted to recreate this ambiance using a retro style. -continued on p18-

Joseph was basically born wearing an apron and has always been interested in cooking and trying new recipes. He frequently visited his relatives in Canada, where he was exposed to a great variety of foods ranging from Mediterranean, Middle Eastern to American-Chinese. Menu items at GoDo Retro include Canadian poutine (with the gravy sauce sent by his cousin back in Canada on a regular basis), bacon steak served with asparagus, buffalo wings and more (Ranging between 11,000 – 17,000 Won in price). Many of the items are seasonal, as some of the ingredients are not easy to acquire in Korea. One customer favorite is “Gambas al Ajillo”, a Spanish shrimp dish; the shrimp is cooked in olive oil with garlic and spices, leaving your taste buds craving for more. GoDo Retro is also home to the best chicken salad I've had in Korea. It is seasoned to perfection with the perfect balance of dressing and balsamic vinegar.

A wide selection of wine is served by the glass for 6,000 Won or by the bottle at prices ranging from 20,000 Won for an Italian bottle of ‘Agreste’, 25,000 Won for a Chilean bottle of ‘Reservado’ to 70,000 Won for a Chilean ‘Valdivieso Single Vine’. Champagne, which is perfect to celebrate a special occasion, can be purchased around 120,000 Won for a bottle of ‘Moët’, and for the very special occasions Joseph has a collection of very fine champagnes. A variety of beers are also served, ranging from 4,000 Won for a Cloud Draft, to 10,000 for a Goose IPA. Cocktails are available between 8,000 Won and 10,000+ Won per perfectly mixed drink. When Joseph is not in the kitchen or behind the bar he tries to visit new places, where he sometimes finds inspiration and gets to enjoy foods prepared by some of the other talented chefs in Korea. He is also an avid fisherman, and he is planning on inviting regular customers to go fishing with him, where he usually slices fresh sashimi on the beach to enjoy as a treat.

The Daegu Theatre Troupe Presents

“Three Views of the Same Object”

• Written and Photographed by Caitlin Semchuk Translated by Yujeong Lee

Who's in the mood for a tragic love story? For some true love is the ultimate prize in life, but how far would you be willing to go to prove your affections? It all begins with an elderly couple, Jesse and Poppy, who are struggling to pay the bills. They fell madly in love when they were in their twenties. They even have a suicide pact against the time that illness and infirmity make life impossible to continue unassisted. But what becomes of the pact if one falls ill and the other is still healthy? And how do you know when it’s just before being too late? The Daegu Theatre Troupe proudly presents Henry Murray’s tragic love story, “Three Views of the Same Object”. It is play written by the Uncle of one of Daegu's very own expats, Caitlin Ambrosia, and will feature an eclectic cast of misfit actors from South Africa, Ireland and America. 대구 씨어터 트룹은 Henry Murray의 비극적인 사랑 이야기, “Three Views of the Same Object”를 자신있게 선보인다.

Original productions of this play have received rave reviews calling it, “Sensitively written...intricate yet always accessible... it has achieved something meaningful”. As well as, “...a brilliant script that is gutwrenching as it is wryly humorous and savagely real.” This presentation of “Three Views of the Same Object” stars Kara Lairson as Jesse (a retired English Professor) who is shown in three different scenarios upon learning her husband, Poppy, (played in two separate parts by Craig Wainwright and Kevin Coyle) has cancer. Dutifully cared for by Poppy's former Academic Secretary, Mrs Widkin, the couple explore the 5 stages of grief all the while their death pact acts as a swordswinging overhead. 이번 대구 씨어터 트룹의 “Three Views of the Same Object”는 Jesse역(은퇴한 영어교수)에 Kara Lairson을 주 역으로 내세웠다. Jesse는 Poppy(두 부분으로 나눠진 부분 을 Craig Wainwright와 Kevin Coyle이 각각 연기)가 암에 걸렸다는 사실을 알게 되는 세 가지 다른 시나리오에 등장한 다. Don’t miss out on your chance to come see the hidden gems of Daegu perform live at Actor Story Theatre located near Namsan Station (on Monorail – line 3). All of the proceeds raised by “Three Views of the Same Object” will be donated to The DDing Dong LGBTQ Youth Crisis Support Center on behalf of the late author Henry Murray. -continued on p22-

Charitable performances are nothing new to the Daegu Theatre Troupe. In February 2016, DTT performed the controversial and captivating Vagina Monologues by the activist writer, Eve Ensler. The show consisted of 22 actresses who came together to share unique stories of women around the world who experienced pain, love and sexual awakenings. We were so happy to have such an amazing turn out of expatriates and local Korean theatre lovers. The proceeds were donated to the local KUMFA house to the sum of 2 million won. We were so shocked and thankful for all the support of the Daegu community and were eager to get another opportunity to help in any way we could.

In addition, we were able to make yet another donation to KUMFA last November from our widely successful 2016 production of “The House of Yes” by Wendy MacLeod. In December, we will once again ask for volunteers to come out and sing on the streets of Daegu to raise money for the local orphanage. It has been a standing tradition during the Christmas holidays and we are so very excited to have the opportunity to do it again this year! Please come out and support the arts in Daegu. We promise you that you’ve never seen anything like it!

Subscription Required The Demise of Waygook? • Written by Nathan Marchand Translated by Yujeong Lee

On Sunday, September 10th, the popular lesson planning, file sharing and forum for English teachers in Korea, Waygook.org, implemented a subscription based service for access to files that had been uploaded by the vast user base that has used the website for over a decade. Waygook user, MissSA, a second year teacher in Korea shared her thoughts. “Since we do not know how much it actually costs to keep Waygook running, it currently just seems to be a bit of a money grab scheme, holding content that a lot of us have become dependent on, hostage. I, as an original content contributor, will not be remunerated for my powerpoints/games/worksheets/ lesson plans. And I have used several copyrighted images, songs, fonts, videos throughout all of my work. I am now at risk of copyright action against me, even though I am not the one making any money off of the new scheme.”

24

Subscription Required

At the time of implementing the $5/month or $20/year subscription fee, per Waygook's Terms of Service effective July 24, 2017, "All content posted is considered to be under public domain and freely available," and ,"Lesson content should be free and available for all users to access." Waygook creator and website administrator, Arsalan Lavang, edited the July 24th Terms of Service on September 14th and removed the clause stating that "Lesson content should be free and available for all users to access."

http://www.daegucompass.com

Waygook user, Mr. C, one of the more notable content creators whose materials have been downloaded close to 1 million times and who has been teaching for 30 years was a school webmaster in the US for most of the 2000s. While Mr. C is not a practicing lawyer, he knows his way around copyright law and the Berne convention. Mr. C notes, “[Lavang] can't violate the law, in that my intellectual property can't become his just because I upload it to his site, even if the Terms of Service says that is the case. Parts of a contract that violate the law are automatically invalid. In fact, for the most part, materials I have uploaded to Waygook are property of SMOE, since I created them as part of my employment and they are in intellectual property terms, "work product". This is a key reason Lavang can't charge for them.”

It appears that Waygook is hosted in the United States, Lavang lives in Canada and the intended audience of Waygook resides in South Korea, so it is unclear under which jurisdiction Waygook falls. “Intellectual property law is probably one of the most complex areas, and it is a thousandfold more thanks to the internet, file sharing and torrents. A key thing to recognize is that copyright only matters if the owner is willing to defend it. Does the Smurf guy really give two centimes if I use his images to help children learn?,” Mr. C added. “Truth is, though, that likely it is a matter of a cease and desist. But what if they download and inspect ALL my materials and suddenly it's 2,000 cease and desist letters? At that point it's not a letter or two, it's a summons and I lose money I don't even have. Will Arsalan be there to help me out? At best he'll claim ignorance, at worst he'll be in the docket with me,” Mr. C continued.

In light of the subscription implementation, KorShare (http://korshare.jcink.net), an alternative to Waygook was created. According to MaddOryxite, one of the administrators of KorShare, “...the development of KorShare has been amazing. In the three days after the paywall, we had 20+ textbooks posted. After 10 days, we had over 1,000 members. People have been kind and helpful. It's been an amazing thing to see the community come together after such a betrayal. I'm really proud of what we're doing here.”

Matt P shared similar sentiments as other users and said, “Even though I only have two months left in Korea, I feel as though I would happily pay $20 to access the material. On the other hand I don't like the idea that the (admittedly small - but I think occasionally pretty good) material I posted on here will not be shared for free - so part of me is inclined to remove it and post it to this new KorShare website. Ultimately, I want to go with what the majority of teachers choose, but in the chaos that followed the shock announcement it seems as though no consensus will be reached. I think Waygook, before the shock announcement, was definitely worth saving (and I'm pretty sure the goodwill was there), but, as many have said already, the announcement felt like a betrayal of the core principles of the site and, as such, it's unclear whether what we have now is worth saving - partly because it seems like a crumbling edifice or a sinking ship - and partly because the principles of free access are not there.”

http://www.daegucompass.com

Not all Waygook users are upset about the subscription fees. As first year teacher Jess O said, “Essentially, I'm not as upset about having to pay for a subscription service to Waygook as I am about how the whole situation was handled. There are many materials on the website that have helped me out so much as a first time teacher, so paying $20 a year is not that big of a deal. However, the way the fee was implemented, in my eyes, was so poorly done. I think everyone is upset that there was absolutely no notice. Is there a reason that the community couldn't have been warned at least a week ahead of time?”

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2017

Mr. C concluded, “Against all odds, I'm still hopeful that the terrible paywall decision will be reversed. As I've mentioned, I'm going to wait a bit before sorting through my materials and deciding what I must remove, but it won't be done out of ill will, since despite anything else, Waygook has legitimately helped me become a better teacher.” Lavang did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Recently, I had the privilege of having a conversation with musician and artist Greg Reynaud. He’s been in Daegu for eight years and has written and performed under the moniker of Midway in Wake, which began in 2006 in a tiny studio apartment in Masan where Greg first moved to in order to write a new chapter on life. Midway in Wake has released two albums both of which completely envelop the listener on distinct yet equally fascinating aural journeys. The latest album entitled “Heirs to the Storm” is both foreboding and appropriate considering recent hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and José among other tropical storms and earthquakes. Greg is also an accomplished visual artist and in this interview he talks about the marriage between his love of art and music, as well as the sources of his inspiration and the creative process. “Heirs to the Storm”이라는 제목을 가진 가장 마지막 앨범 28

Midway in Wake

What has it been like creating music while living overseas? It hasn’t been easy. Daegu doesn’t quite have the music community that Busan or Seoul has. It takes a lot of selfdiscipline to stay productive. One of the reasons I’ve been able to stay in Korea is my passion for the things I do…if I stopped doing them, then I’d have to leave. While I enjoy making music and painting, I feel it’s something I need to do.

The new album features songs from ten different perspectives after an apocalyptic event, where did this idea of a multi-narrative start? I think I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with a post apocalypse; what would cause it, how would human beings react to it. While writing lyrics I thought about trying to do something a little different from the mostly socio-political context I draw from. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be great to jump into the mind of fictional characters and bring out their lives or struggles? One painstaking song after another, a narrative concept album is what “Heirs to the Storm” became. -continued on p30-

How does your artwork fit into the picture? The music has always come first for me, but when I’m struggling with finishing songs, I try to fill in the cracks with something else. The art keeps me occupied and productive. As the album was near completion, my buddy from Lowatt Records came up with the idea of combining both my music and my art. While the songs share a common theme and overall mood, each song represents a different aspect of the human condition like feelings of love, loyalty, desire, loss, greed, revenge or desolation. Each song is complemented by a painting that illustrates those feelings adding yet another dimension to the music. Where did the band and the album names originate? I was painting while listening to the audio version of a novel entitled “Unbroken”. One of the characters is lost at sea in the Pacific during WWII. The narrator mentioned the Midway and Wake islands and right away it just clicked. Later on, the name evolved into something more, such as a perpetual state of sub-consciousness.

Midway in Wake

‘Heirs to the Storm’ refers to us as inheritors of the apocalypse. In the album, it’s not clearly stated what is causing this problem in the world. It could be war or environmental catastrophes. It’s not really important what causes it; how the people deal with these circumstances is what fuels these narratives. ‘Heirs to the Storm’은 세계종말 상속자로써의 우리와 관련이 있다. If this album becomes more popular and you meet the right group of musicians, might you consider playing live? If you listen to the songs, you realize that there’d need to be at least five (if not more) musicians. It’s layered and to fully realize it live, you would want all those pieces in there, with some improvisation, of course. Having been in bands in the past, it’s all about chemistry. If the chemistry isn’t there, it’s not worth it in the end. I’ve played live shows quite a bit and it’s not something I’m yearning to get back to. If it happens, fine, but it’s not the main focus. It’s building the songs, amassing the pieces and then putting them altogether.

http://www.daegucompass.com

Lastly, what does the future hold? I want to continue writing songs, maybe explore this concept a bit further, in more of a positive light. In the near future, handwritten lyric sheets written by 10 different people will be available as PDF downloads. A few more videos will be released as well. Other than that, who knows?

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2017

Visit Gimhae Take a Ride at the Nakdonggang River Rail Park

If you are in need of an adventurous day trip this autumn, drop a pin on Gimhae, a city located west of Busan in the province of South Gyeongsang. The city is often overlooked as the location for the Gimhae International Airport but, dig a little deeper, and you will find attractions and activities not offered everywhere in the country including the Gimhae Nakdonggang River Rail Park. This fall, leisurely pedal 3km across a rustic bridge with a bird’s eye view of the Nakdong River and capture the swell of gradient leaves on the surrounding mountains. Sounds pretty romantic, huh?

When it comes to getting around Gimhae, it can be a little less whimsical as it requires a bit of research. My friend and I arrived in the city around 11:30 on a Sunday morning. We waited for the No. 60 bus that goes from the Pungnyudong Terminal to Nakdong-gang Railpark but quickly learned the next bus was not operating again until 13:00. Before you go, double-check the time you will be arriving to make sure it coordinates with the Gimhae bus schedule, or else you will end up taking a 15-minute taxi ride to the location, which is not a bad idea either.

http://www.daegucompass.com

We arrived at the rail park around noon and were greeted by food stalls as well as a wide pathway that lead up to the rail bikes. As you walk up the path, you’re surrounded by lush scenery with rail bikes trolleying across the tall, rustic bridge in front of you. As we got to the ticket counter, we realized that tickets were sold out until 13:30. I highly recommend reserving them online but if you end up being stuck with an hour to kill like we did, go ahead and explore the Raspberry Wine Cave, adjacent to the rail bikes. -continued on p34-

Did you know 70 percent of the raspberries sold within Korea grow in Gimhae? The city is famous for them! As you walk through the remodeled wine cave (bring a sweater as it can be a little chilly) and take in the luminous, colorful lights and lanterns on display. As you make your way down the wine cave, you will end up at a mini bar. The wine sold here is special to Gimhae and can be purchased by the glass or bottle. If you are feeling a little peckish, go ahead and indulge in a cheese platter or share a savory raspberry cheesecake. You deserve it. If raspberry wine is not for you, there is an old train car that has been renovated into a café in front of the wine cave that also sells refreshments and yummy treats. 34

Visit Gimhae

Finally, it came time to board our rail bike and I was filled with so much anticipation I could have burst! My friend and I excitedly buckled in at the front of the four-seater bike but note that if there is a group of you, only the two front seats have pedals. The people in the back can simply relax and enjoy the scenery. You do not need to know how to ride a bike to participate, simply step on the pedals for speed and use the hand brake to stop. You can go as fast or as slow as you wish, but it is advised to keep a 10m distance between you and the rail bike in front. The sound of rail bikes along the tracks gave me a sense of nostalgia; it was like being on an old-school wooden rollercoaster. The exhilarating mix of feeling the wind in your hair and the smell of the outdoors was refreshing, not to mention the surrounding scenery was absolutely stunning and perfect for a fall foliage Insta-snap.

Such is South Korea, there will be many photo opportunities so remember to charge your phone or bring a camera along for the ride. Visiting Osaka and Kyoto The Best of my Solo Trip to Japan

Japan was everything I hoped for and more. I split my week-long holiday between Osaka and Kyoto, choosing to spend the majority of my time in the latter. I went with high expectations for this country and left with them easily exceeded and already scheming my return. In an ode to what we share on social media, here are the highlights of my vacation.

Visiting Osaka and Kyoto

Food 음식

Japan is a haven for culinary enthusiasts like myself. Ramen, sushi, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, green tea everything, convenience food, it’s all amazing. I could seriously taste the commitment to quality and excellence that Japanese seem to put into their food. I especially loved Osaka, often called ‘the kitchen of Japan,’ because the food there was on a level unbeknownst to me. The coolest part about eating in Japan is that not once did I feel uncomfortably stuffed after a meal. Somehow I’d end up feeling light despite the copious amounts of food ingested. The Japanese surely have the art of cooking and eating figured out.

Landmarks

Shrines, temples, castles and gardens, Japan has it all. From the marvelous all-white Osaka Castle to the Instagrammable red pillars of Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto, Japan is the place that keeps on giving. I must confess that after consecutive days of temple hopping, they did start to blend in. I recommend choosing a few to truly appreciate their intricacy and beauty.

Aesthetics 미학

Japan gets design. Its architecture was visually pleasing, a welcome contrast to Korea’s lackluster exteriors. The effortless harmony of the modern buildings with the traditional facades of other structures is nothing short of fascinating. -continued on p42-

Zen gardens

Kyoto is a serene city so I made sure to set time aside to take it all in. I avoided breezing through it in a haste. Instead, I slowed down at these sublime traditional gardens to contemplate and marvel at their simplicity. My mindfulness reached peak levels at Ginkaku-ji Temple (Silver Pavilion) and Honen-in.

Going solo

Traveling to Japan on my own offered a little taste of what’s to come during my post-Korea backpacking trip. I relished having the freedom to tailor my days to my whims and wishes while socializing with fellow travelers at the

hostel over drinks in the evenings. While there were days that sightseeing solo got a little boring and lonely, it made for later interactions all the more pleasant. I left Japan with more friends than I ever expected to make in a week’s time.

Orderliness and cleanliness

Japan is a blissfully quiet and an orderly oasis. Somehow the county manages to feel peaceful even in big cities like Osaka and Kyoto. I was astounded at how efficiently everything runs, from the buses to the trains to big tourist attractions. People line up in straight lines and wait

patiently. There is no cutting the queues or frenzy of any kind. Japan is also ridiculously clean! Is it obvious just how smitten I am with this country?!

Locals

What’s a country without its people? The Japanese locals I interacted with were some of the most polite, friendly and lovely bunch I’ve ever come across.

Geisha

Kyoto is geisha central. Geisha are akin to performing artists or hostesses that entertain clientele—both men and women—through music, dance and conversation. They live in the Gion district and while elusive, can be caught during the weekends in the early evenings as they make their way to appointments. I had the luck and pleasure to see a few of these ladies in all their elaborate makeup, ornate hair and graceful glory.

Visiting Osaka and Kyoto

Nara 나라

I made a pit stop in Nara on my way from Osaka to Kyoto to hang out with the deer roaming free at Nara Park. What adorable little creatures! They love tourists because they get fed these special deer cookies. They’re so friendly, they go up to any person extending their hand but quickly walk away if empty-handed. I petted these lovely animals, took more selfies than I care to admit and teased a few with my ice cream. Nara is a great place to spend a day. I surely hope to see more of Japan before it’s time to depart Korea.

Compass Connoisseur Check out these great restaurants, as recommended by The Daegu Compass’ Editor-in-Chief!

Downtown

옥상 therooftop

One of the best places to get European food in Daegu, 옥상 therooftop has made quite a name for itself. You can easily find it above What? BBQ restaurant on meat street. The owner and chef, Rose Kyunghwa Kim, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia and has a menu packed with fantastic dishes. From the cheese-stuffed meatballs, to the Caesar’s salad, not to mention the fantastic chicken schnitzel, the menu has plenty to offer at a great price. Hours: 12:00-01:00 / Break 15:30-17:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-213-7611 Address: 중구 동성로3길 32-43 3F

La Luce

One of the best places for a date, birthday, or special meal, La Luce delivers high quality mediterranean meals for the midrange foodie. Their menu includes a wide variety of Western dishes, my personal favorites being the flatbread and mousakka. The ambiance is slightly upscale, the menu is diverse, and their set meals are to die for. La Luce is my go-to place for my birthday celebrations and it has never disappointed. Hours: 12:00-22:00 / Break 15:30-17:30 / Closed Sundays & Holidays Tel: 053-606-0733 Address: 대구시 중구 동덕로 141 2F

Brewer Bros

The best fish and chips in Daegu can be found at Brewer Bros, and the portion sizes are massive. You can get a medium size portion for 12,000 or a large for 15,000. If you’re not in the mood for fish, there are a few other tasty options to choose from, including sausages and chips or fried shrimp and chips - both are solid dishes as well. Brewer Bros also offers a good selection of craft beers on tap, at a very reasonable price. Hours: Sun-Thurs 17:00-01:00 / Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 Tel: 010-3268-4269 Address: 대구 중구 종로 29

EtOH’s Drafthouse EtOH’s is your one-stop-shop for American-style pizza and a wide selection of craft beer. The owner works very hard to deliver great food and welcoming atmosphere - and he’s succeeded in making EtOH’s one of the most popular places to grab a bite and a pint on the weekends. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu 16:00-01:00 / Fri 16:00-02:00 / Sat 15:00-02:00 / Sun 15:00-01:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-211-9385 Address: 대구시 중구 동성로3길 12-3 2F

I'm Paul

Hands-down my favorite dessert cafe in Daegu. The owner of this lovely cafe fell in love with New York style desserts while studying at Parson’s School of Design. The coffee, aide, and tea on offer perfectly complement the gorgeous desserts she makes. You can even order entire cakes for special occasions. There’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend, though I personally lean towards the Profiterole cake and anything she makes with chocolate!

Schoron

My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. The place is small, so you might have to wait, but it is my favorite place to go for brunch downtown.

Beomeo G’Day Cafe

I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! The dish includes a sunnyside-up egg, two lovely pieces of toast, a small salad, and mushrooms in a cheese-cream sauce - to die for! I love to head to G’Day on a Saturday or Sunday, with my laptop in-tow. I can enjoy a great brunch, wonderful coffee (and tea), and get some writing done in a great, relaxed atmosphere.

Sinmae Taj Mahal

One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. To find the restaurant, take exit 5 from Sinmae station and go straight until you see Dunkin Donuts (it’s on the 2nd floor of that building). The restaurant is foreigner-friendly and they will cater the spice level to your needs. The dishes are well-priced and there are plenty of vegetarian and halal options as well.

Nam-gu HamiMami

The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. They serve western-style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort foods. HamiMami’s homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, and sausages are among the best in the city and their bread is delivered fresh daily. Head to HamiMami’s when you’re feeling a little homesick and let them spoil you! Hours: 08:00-21:00 / Weekday break 15:00-17:00 / Closed Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Address: 대구시 남구 삼정길 87

Sangin and Jincheon

This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! Oh - I’ve never seen anyone pay by card, so it’d be best to take cash with you.

Suseong Lake La Salud

I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. I usually go for the house burger, but you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu! Definitely go for the set, which includes a drink and side. The restaurant is easy to find and the staff is super-friendly!

Bongsan Cultural Street

77, Bongsanmunhwa-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2017

Bangcheon Market & Kim Kwang-suk Memorial Mural Road

Dalgubeol-daero 450-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu, Korea

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

DAEGU COMPASS NOVEMBER 2017

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
