Marvelous and Interesting The Look Smithsonian Exhibit Comes to Daegu • Article and photos courtesy of the Smithsonian Photo Exhibition Translated by Yujeong Lee SPONSORED CONTENT

One of the biggest museums, 'Smithsonian', opened their photo exhibition called <LOOK SMITHSONIAN> in Daegu on April 29th. The exhibition has award-winning photos from the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest, hosted by Smithsonian Magazine every year. The magazine is one of the Smithsonian-affiliated organizations. This is their first overseas exhibition. Kim Dae-ik, the CEO of D Communication, which hosts the exhibition, said, " <LOOK SMITHSONIAN> will be hosted in Daegu after Seoul. Hopefully this will help secure more Smithsonian exhibitions in the future."

<LOOK SMITHSONIAN> is the only chance for you to see all the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest prize winners. The contest is as prestigious as the contests held by National Geographic, Life, and World Press Photo, and produces thousands of winners from over 100 countries. In the 13th contest, held in 2015, about 46,000 people from 168 countries participated and now it has become a worldwide photo contest.

The exhibition will showcase 145 pieces from the 1st to the 13th contests, which are carefully chosen. And, it reorganizes the seven original categories into new sections, so that visitors can talk about "meaningful moments" that they have in their daily lives. There are three sections; 1. Indescribable, 2. Close Up and 3. Bright as the Sun. Visitors can share in their emotions, thoughts, and memories and moreover, they can share their own story related to the images. The organizers hope that "visitors can directly experience insight into our lives by 'marvelous or interesting' moments that we run into on a daily basis." Samsung Lions Park A Sports and Entertainment Hub

• Article and photos courtesy of the Samsung Lions Translated by Yujeong Lee SPONSORED CONTENT

Samsung Lions is one of the original Korean baseball teams and was founded in 1982, when the Korean professional baseball league started, and is one of two teams that didn’t change its name from the original (this other team is Busan’s Lotte Giants). On April 16th, the Samsung Lions achieved its 2400th win and broke the the league’s record for most wins. After this massive achievement, there was only one thing that the Lions wanted, a new baseball stadium. The old baseball stadium was located in Buk-gu and opened 1948. Finally, a new Samsung Lions Park opened last year.

12

Samsung Lions Park

http://www.daegucompass.com

The new stadium accommodates 24,000 people and was built in an octahedral style. The biggest advantage of the shape is that you can see the field very well no matter where you sit. In addition, part of the stadium is directly connected with the Daegu Grand Park subway station (Green Line (no.2). Not only is the baseball stadium just for watching baseball games, but it has become a place for entertainment as well. Men, women and children alike can enjoy all the stadium has to offer, and the attendance of women and children has increased dramatically. It has been reported that that half of the visitors are women.

Lions Park has prepared a lot of things for visitors to enjoy. Their signature event is ‘Blue for Fri. and Sat.’ After the game on Fridays and Saturdays, visitors can join a big dance party, which is held at a baseball stadium with the cheerleaders. The lights are turned off, and the the party is illuminated by the huge electronic scoreboard and the long ribbon electronic scoreboard. The event takes place regardless if the team wins or loses and over 2,000 fans enjoy the party every week. On weekends, there are also events for children. ‘Ground Catch Ball‘ offers children a chance to play catch with their parents before Saturday’s game each week. After the games on Sunday, ‘Kids Run’ allows children to run around with players on the grounds. -continued on p14-

Also, the team mascot has been updated as well. Bleo still has the same name and appearance from the past, but now he has become a father and has a family. ‘Bleo Family’ has Pink Leo, the mother, Lenny, their fifteen yearold-daughter, and Laon, their three-year-old genius-pitcher son. The rest of games this year include: 10 games in June, 9 games in July, 15 games in August, and 6 games in September. From June 2nd to 4th, active US military can get a SKY Free Seat for free since June is Memorial Month in Korea. It is a great chance to enjoy Lions Park from the SKY Free Seat, which has amazing views.

Samsung Lions Park

There are many seat options at Lions Park; VIP seats behind the catcher, the largest selection of Table Seats in Korea, the ever-so-popular Blue Zone where you can enjoy cheering with cheerleaders, Grass Seats where you can set up a tent, and D First Rooftop Zone where you can enjoy a nice view and free craft beer.

Coffee in Daegu Finding the Perfect Cup of Joe

• Written and photographed by Gwendolyn DeSilva [http://memoriesnotmaterialthings.com] Translated by Yujeong Lee

There certainly isn’t a shortage of coffee shops in Daegu. I recently counted 47 different establishments where I could grab a morning latte in the 15 minute walk between the front of my apartment building and the doorstop of my workplace. Forty-seven! Admittedly, some of these were hardly salubrious, such as 7-Eleven and the rundown looking ‘Hot Dog and Coffee’. And that’s the thing about Daegu, whilst there is a coffee shop for about every fifty paces you walk, I’ve found there are only a few that manage to have that unique combination of an inviting ambience and strong espresso that Western java connoisseurs desire. So after extensive research, and a willingness to on occasion travel 45 minutes to visit such a place, I’m sharing with you my top places in Daegu for a cuppa. Best for Downtown - Ryu Coffee Roasters Where else does your coffee come with a business card detailing tasting notes and the blend of beans used? If you are a coffee snob then Ryu Coffee Roasters is the cafe for you. In fact it is the only coffee shop I’ve ever visited where I was greeted at the door as if entering an upscale restaurant, shown to my chosen seat, and offered a bound menu of coffees to choose from. The team of baristas here are some of the best in the business, regularly winning local and national contests, and it is evident in each cup served. From espressos, to lattes, to hand-drip coffees every sip is perfectly balanced. But if the coffee doesn’t steal the show, then the ambience well. The old meets new dark, rustic interior is contrasted with industrial

Although this is now a major chain, it opened near Kyungbuk National University in 1990 and was one of the first in Korea to invent the roasting machine, arguably making it the originator of coffee fever in Daegu and perhaps South Korea. With a long history of bean roasting by one of Korea’s original coffee masters, you are guaranteed a smooth, delectable coffee. Their hand-drip ‘Dutch’ coffee is highly recommended. But the real reason to visit this cafe is for the ambience. Their wooden outdoor terrace backs up onto Apsan forest and is one of the most peaceful places in Daegu to relax and sip a latte. Best for a Strong Cup - Omnipotent New on the Daegu coffee shop scene is Omnipotent near KNU Campus’s North Gate. If you are tired of the Korean’s preference for single shot espresso lattes that taste more of warm frothy milk than coffee, then this place is worth the venture. The coffee here lives up to it’s name, serving smaller 8oz lattes with double shots. They also offer some unusual coffee options including a macadamia latte. The ambience here is laid back with cozy nooks at the back which are great for rainy days and for sunny days with a sofa looking towards picture windows onto the bustling college student-filled street ahead. Daegu Hanok Cafes and Restaurants

Iga Hanok

A bit off downtown is a Korean pub, in this beautiful hanok, just at the mouth of a small alley. Iga, or House of Lee, opens only in the evening. It invites people through its archway to come sit and enjoy and sample the various makgolli they have available. The place is a little pricey for my taste, but it would be nice for a swanky traditional night out and the sampler of makgolli is a first I’ve seen. That in itself may make it worth the trip. There is no English menu. They do have Korean beef, different types of jeon, or Korean pancakes, and hot soups as well as the random snacks like cheesy

deokbokkki. We dined on salmon and were pleasantly surprised that the dish provided two salmon recipes in one dish. It was a nice break from the usual samgyeopsal or meat you eat so often in Korea. For a summer or spring night, this place is perfect with its open courtyard. There is a private table for a bigger party right beside the makgolli fridges.

Aside from the atmosphere, what makes this place worth a visit is the magkolli selection and most of the all the sampler you can get. They have over 10 kinds of standard makgolli to choose from. The makgolli sampler is a mere 8,000 won for 3 types. For the more eccentric flavors, they have the banana favored, chestnut flavored, citron flavored and even corn flavored makgolli! The banana is a pretty sweet one to start with for those not used to the makgolli flavor. The tiger makgolli (horangi makgolli) is pretty smooth. -continued on p26-

Unlocking History’s Mysteries

NET and former EPiKer Brian M. Van Hise has recently taken this whole teaching ESL thing to the next level. This past December the man published a freaking ESL book! Well, color me green with envy. We fired off some questions to Brian to get the story straight from the Hise’s mouth.

First, tell us a bit about History's Mysteries.

History's Mysteries: The Missing Years of Gutenberg is an interactive ESL novel aimed at middle school students.

Unlocking History’s Mysteries

Daegu NET publishes ESL book • Written by Kyle Decker Photos courtesy of Brian Van Hise Translated by Yujeong Lee

The story revolves around four kids, Jinu and Jimin Kim and their best friends Chris and Kate Temple. All avid bookworms, they search their local library during summer vacation for new books to read. That's when the strange librarian shows them a secret room with a book he claims no one has ever read. The book is called History's Mysteries, and as the kids begin to read it, they find themselves transported back in time with the mission of helping a key figure from history. For the first book in this series, that person happens to be Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press.

History's Mysteries is an interactive English puzzle adventure. That means, the real readers need to solve a series of fun, English puzzles in order to help propel the characters through the story and complete their mission!

that with language learning, we find uniqueness more memorable (and thus effective) than boring textbooks and vocabulary drills. So, I wanted to bring that same feeling to the Korean ESL market.

How did the idea come about?

What's your writing background?

Having taught public school English in Korea for five years, I found myself uninspired by the selection of English texts accessible to the kids. I had studied German while a high school student and now, 20 years later, cannot remember what those German textbooks even looked like. But, I do remember using an old radio drama to help our listening comprehension. It was called Dangerous Ways. I realized

I have been involved with creative writing since a middle school student myself but this is my first step into writing ESL content.

What teaching methods do you use in the book?

The book promotes fluency in reading. That means it's a short novel tailored to English learners. The sentences are simple and short. In fact, when I wrote the first draft my editor told me the English level was too high. So, to slow myself down, I started over, writing the entire novel by hand. Writing by hand forced me to slow down my thoughts and create simpler English. We want the History's Mysteries series to work as "gateway books" to inspire and excite readers into reading more English! The book also uses Teaching Proficiency through Reading Storytelling (TPRS) methods. There are nine chapters in the book. Each chapter begins with a preview of seven key words that will be in the chapter. By previewing, the readers will be familiar with the words when they appear naturally in the text. Finally, each chapter ends with a very simple three question review. The three questions are basically the same question, worded different ways, to ensure basic comprehension of the text.

The book can be easily taught at home or in English academies.

What has the publishing experience been like in Korea?

The publishing experience here has been great. I used a non-traditional approach to publishing this book. While most would prepare a book and submit samples to publishing houses, I took a different route. I arranged my concept into a printed postcard which I took to the Seoul International Book Fair. A Korean friend and I pitched it to different publishers. Many weren't interested, however one was. That was Key Publications, a very successful ESL publisher located in Gangnam. Their CEO was interested in creating something very similar to my concept, so the timing was great! He put me in touch with a great editor named Jeannie Park (박지니) and after a few months a contract was offered and signed.

http://www.daegucompass.com

What challenges did you face during the project?

The biggest challenge has been getting it seen by the right audience. We need to get middle school students and their parents aware of this awesome English tool. The publisher has been promoting it on their end, but I feel there's still more work to do.

What do you have in store for future editions?

Book Two in the series (called The Shoulders of Giants) has the kids traveling back to December 1990 to help Tim Berners-Lee upload the first webpage. It's a great follow up to The Missing Years of Gutenberg and has a lot of computer and coding-based puzzles. I wrote it last fall and it should be out, hopefully, within the next year.

My Favorite Geojado Pension • Written and photographed by Alex A-Che Translated by Yujeong Lee

I have finally found a place that feels like vacation home in some ways. The second largest island in Korea, Geojedo is a populous place near Busan with beaches, a POW museum, and a botanical island accessible by boat. Geojedo locals are friendly and have a very relaxed way about them. Geojedo foreigners are not your typical English teacher / military Daegu type. There are plenty of Europeans and other Westerners working in the shipbuilding industry among other similar occupations. There are a few must see places that make it a trip worthwhile to take, even if you aren’t into beaches.

The pension I go to is located in the southern east area of WahyeonMoraeSup Beach It is accessible by bus. The Ilban (일반 ) 60 or 60-1 bus takes you to the WahyeonHaesuYukjang stop (와현해수욕장). What I love about this place is that it is not even a block away from the beach. The beach is snuggled in a calm bay, with not a lot of people, which makes it ideal if you want to get away from the noisy beaches. Most importantly, you also have a CU on the corner and a GS25 right on the road.

http://www.daegucompass.com

Just perfect. If you have a car, the mart is a fast 7 to 10 minute drive into town, where you can also find the best pizza on the island. The best thing about Pizzaro is that it is not frozen pizza! The guy who owns Pizzaro is super friendly if you can speak a little Korean. Pizzaro (피자로) owes its praise to the cheese they use, a specialty from the cheese region in Imsil, Jeollado and to the homemade dough he makes. Highly recommended and a short cab away. by bus, but I would advise using Kakao taxi to go there then head to the mart up a few blocks to replenish your supplies and take a cab back home. Here are some tips on etiquette and getting the most out of your experience: 1) Rule of thumb: leave the place as you found it. That means cleaning dishes before you leave. Imagine it is like staying at a friend’s house or a distant relative. 2) The bedding and used towels can be left in a corner or in one place for the owners to wash.

http://www.daegucompass.com

3) Speaking of friend or relative’s house… ideally that is a bit of what it should feel like. The best part about pensions is that they can feel a bit like Bed and Breakfast places. The owners tend to be invested in their patrons and even the other people staying will interact with you. I’ve had people share a dish and cake they’ve brought during out barbeque cookout.

Jirisan Traversing South Korea's Second Tallest Mountain

• Written and photographed by Nathan Marchand Translated by Yujeong Lee

Jirisan is the second tallest mountain in South Korea after Jeju’s Hallasan. It stands at 1915m (6,283 feet for my fellow Americans.) We undertook the traverse in 3 days – although if you’re a very fit, avid hiker, it could be done over a weekend with a little planning and two very long days. There are a number of logistics that should be sorted out prior to embarking. Within the Jirisan National Park, there are a number of mountain lodges where you must stay

and you need a reservation. The Korean National Park Service website (https://reservation.knps.or.kr/foreigner/) is available in English and is very easy to navigate and includes a wealth of information. You need to create an account to make a shelter reservation and be warned – the shelters book up fast! Thankfully, I was waiting at my computer on the day when reservations were set to open and I was able to make a reservation. Consult the website to find out when the first day is that you can make reservations. Shelters have electricity, but no hot water, showers, beds or plumbing. Reservations are 9,000 won/ night. You can rent a blanket for an additional 2,000 won. We stayed at Nogodan shelter our first night and Seseok shelter our second night. Nogodan also included a sleeping mat in the price of the blanket rental, Seseok did not. I recommend bringing an eye mask and earplugs to get a good night’s sleep – the sound of a hundred Korean men snoring could easily be mistaken for a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All shelters have clean your drinking water. I carried two liters with me at all times.

Be prepared to carry three days’ worth of food, as the shelters have very limited goods for sale – not much aside from precooked rice and chocolate pies. Daiso, HomePlus and local grocery stores sell Otoggi brand instant meals, including many meat options – meatballs, sweet and sour chicken etc. They are precooked, come in a sealed plastic pouch and can be eaten cold. They are a quick, lightweight meal. Jjimjilbang eggs are another good and lightweight source of protein. I brought cans of tuna as well. In addition to my protein, I brought three bowls of precooked rice and I made a gallon sized bag of trail mix with lots of nuts and dried fruits. While we opted to bring ready-to-eat foods, nearly all Koreans had butane burners, pots, pans and an insane amount of food. It sure was a sight to see samgyeopsal being grilled at 1500m! tradeoff for eating cold food for three days and having a lighter backpack is well worth it. As it was, I carried 12kg (26 lbs) and that was heavy enough! In addition to food, water and clothes, I carried toilet paper, a headlamp (3000 won at Daiso), a camping mat (5000 won at Daiso) and my cell phone charger.

We departed for Namwon from Seobu Bus Terminal (Seongdangmot on the red line) at 9:40. The first bus of the day departs at 7:55 and there are only a few buses each day, about every two hours. We arrived in Namwon just after 11:00 and had two hours until our second bus to Hwaeomsa (Temple). We ate lunch, hydrated and I bought a 3,000 won Jirisan map bandana complete with hike times between the mountain shelters and summits. It proved to be very helpful and not to mention, it made for a memorable souvenir! There are only five daily buses that depart Namwon for Hwaeomsa starting at 7:40 about every three hours. Our bus departed at 1:15 and we rode until the last stop where we were the only two left on the bus. Make your way to the temple just up the road from where the bus drops you off. The trail starts on the right side of the temple complex. This is the worst marked part of the entire trip and you may need to ask a monk or two for directions. You’ll need to cross over a bridge to get to the trailhead.

the highest pe ak before immediately descending 4km down one of the steepest trails I’ve ever hiked. We ended at Jungsan-ri where we took a bus to Jinju at 12:15 before continuing on to Seobu Bus Terminal in Daegu where we arrived at about 4:00 p.m. The four bus trips will be about 50,000 won total. Overall, we hiked about 20 hours over the course of the three days. The views are stunning, the hikers are nice and it’s a welcome escape from city life!

Boracay Island 5 Days in the Phillipines

• Written and photographed by Julita Ramsunder Translated by Yujeong Lee

Unsteady arrival

I was greeted by a tropical rainstorm as I landed in Kalibo Airport. It was a rocky start to my journey which still included a two-hour bus drive to the ferry port, a short ferry ride to Boracay Island and finally a shuttle to my hostel. At this point I just hoped that the Island would reward my painstaking effort to get there.

Boracay Island

The real arrival

As it turns out there was no need to worry as I woke up to sunshine, blue sky and 30 degree weather. It seemed that all was in favor of me having a perfect beach day – and it truly was. After eating a breakfast of the freshest mangoes and watermelon, available in abundance on the island, I soon hit White Beach. A convenient two-minute walk from my hostel, I was soon lounging on a sun-bed drinking coconut shakes and eating green mangoes with salt. White Beach is known for its white sands but while it has crystal clear waters the algae puts a little damper on a swimmer’s paradise. So after a few hours my friends and I decided to explore what else Boracay had to offer.

http://www.daegucompass.com

Puka Beach

After a few minutes of negotiation – essential if you don’t want to be overcharged while there - with the tuk-tuk driver we were soon on our way to Puka Beach. We soon found ourselves on a smaller beach with crystal blue waters. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon swimming, eating fresh seafood and fragrant garlic rice while sipping on more fruit shakes. I was soon floating on a giant unicorn floaty in the middle of a very calm ocean. Puka beach is a great place to unwind and relax -continued on p42-

while being the right-balance of not too crowded. I came back every day on my stay to sample more of the fresh seafood and try out some of the watersports – you can snorkel, go paddle boarding or take a kayak out. As the sun set on each day I would find myself a tuk-tuk to take me back to my hostel in time for dinner along Balabag Beach.

Boracay Island

Balabag

Balabag beach, which is a short way along the same coastline as White Beach, is the best place to spend an evening while in Boracay. All the sunbeds are packed away and are replaced with dinner tables from the multiple restaurants and resorts along the strip. The strip extends for about 1.5km along which you will find every type of cuisine, bars, hookah lounges and side-stall markets. It is where I spent most of my evenings because there is nothing quite like eating dinner while overlooking the ocean. This part of the beach remains busy until the early hours of the morning and is a great place to meet people and wind the night away.

http://www.daegucompass.com

The smooth (but sad) departure

I spent my last day exploring Ili-iligan beach which is much more private with only around 20 people on the island. While it was a little too quiet for me it is the perfect spot for people who want to escape the crowds. And after an incredible five days in Boracay, I had soon forgotten the rocky start amidst the warm ocean water, coconut shakes and fresh seafood. Boracay is the place to be for travelers who are seeking an island-experience that is just a footstep away from Korea.

Compass Connoisseur Check out these great restaurants, as recommended by The Daegu Compass’ Editor-in-Chief!

Downtown

옥상 therooftop

One of the best places to get European food in Daegu, 옥상 therooftop has made quite a name for itself. You can easily find it above What? BBQ restaurant on meat street. The owner and chef, Rose Kyunghwa Kim, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia and has a menu packed with fantastic dishes. From the cheese-stuffed meatballs, to the Caesar’s salad, not to mention the fantastic chicken schnitzel, the menu has plenty to offer at a great price. Hours: 12:00-01:00 / Break 15:30-17:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-213-7611 Address: 중구 동성로3길 32-43 3F

La Luce

One of the best places for a date, birthday, or special meal, La Luce delivers high quality mediterranean meals for the midrange foodie. Their menu includes a wide variety of Western dishes, my personal favorites being the flatbread and mousakka. The ambiance is slightly upscale, the menu is diverse, and their set meals are to die for. La Luce is my go-to place for my birthday celebrations and it has never disappointed. Hours: 12:00-22:00 / Break 15:30-17:30 / Closed Sundays & Holidays Tel: 053-606-0733 Address: 대구시 중구 동덕로 141 2F

Brewer Bros

The best fish and chips in Daegu can be found at Brewer Bros, and the portion sizes are massive. You can get a medium size portion for 12,000 or a large for 15,000. If you’re not in the mood for fish, there are a few other tasty options to choose from, including sausages and chips or fried shrimp and chips - both are solid dishes as well. Brewer Bros also offers a good selection of craft beers on tap, at a very reasonable price. Hours: Sun-Thurs 17:00-01:00 / Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 Tel: 010-3268-4269 Address: 대구 중구 종로 29

EtOH’s Drafthouse EtOH’s is your one-stop-shop for American-style pizza and a wide selection of craft beer. The owner works very hard to deliver great food and welcoming atmosphere - and he’s succeeded in making EtOH’s one of the most popular places to grab a bite and a pint on the weekends. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu 16:00-01:00 / Fri 16:00-02:00 / Sat 15:00-02:00 / Sun 15:00-01:00 / Closed Tuesdays Tel: 053-211-9385 Address: 대구시 중구 동성로3길 12-3 2F

I'm Paul

Hands-down my favorite dessert cafe in Daegu. The owner of this lovely cafe fell in love with New York style desserts while studying at Parson’s School of Design. The coffee, aide, and tea on offer perfectly complement the gorgeous desserts she makes. You can even order entire cakes for special occasions. There’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend, though I personally lean towards the Profiterole cake and anything she makes with chocolate!

Schoron

My favorite spot for brunch in Daegu. The menu includes around 10 different options for breakfast, and a number of lunch/dinner dishes. I always tell myself that I’ll try something different when I go, but I never do - you just can’t beat the avocado and roasted vegetable sandwich!! But, to be fair, my friends have ordered the smoked salmon omelette and the pancakes, and were swimmingly happy. The place is small, so you might have to wait, but it is my favorite place to go for brunch downtown.

Compass Connoisseur

http://www.daegucompass.com

Beomeo G’Day Cafe

I’m partial to the Sydney brunch at G’Day Cafe, and so are my friends. If you go, definitely try that first! The dish includes a sunnyside-up egg, two lovely pieces of toast, a small salad, and mushrooms in a cheese-cream sauce - to die for! I love to head to G’Day on a Saturday or Sunday, with my laptop in-tow. I can enjoy a great brunch, wonderful coffee (and tea), and get some writing done in a great, relaxed atmosphere.

Sinmae Taj Mahal

One of the best Indian restaurants in Daegu, Taj Mahal is worth the trek out to Sinmae. To find the restaurant, take exit 5 from Sinmae station and go straight until you see Dunkin Donuts (it’s on the 2nd floor of that building). The restaurant is foreigner-friendly and they will cater the spice level to your needs. The dishes are well-priced and there are plenty of vegetarian and halal options as well.

Nam-gu HamiMami

The best American-style brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami’s has been in the area since 2008 and is quite popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. They serve western-style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort foods. HamiMami’s homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, and sausages are among the best in the city and their bread is delivered fresh daily. Head to HamiMami’s when you’re feeling a little homesick and let them spoil you! Hours: 08:00-21:00 / Weekday break 15:00-17:00 / Closed Mondays Tel: 053-475-5242 Address: 대구시 남구 삼정길 87

Sangin and Jincheon

This is my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant in Daegu. The place is tiny, but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very welcoming. You can just order the red pork and # of rice you’d like and they’ll take care of the rest! The marinades and side dishes are made inhouse and with love - definitely worth the trek out to Sangin! Oh - I’ve never seen anyone pay by card, so it’d be best to take cash with you.

Suseong Lake La Salud

I’ve tried almost every burger joint in Daegu, and La Salud is still my favorite, based on flavor, price, and ambiance. I usually go for the house burger, but you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on the menu! Definitely go for the set, which includes a drink and side. The restaurant is easy to find and the staff is super-friendly!

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.
