LETTER FROM THE EDITOR At the start of a new year, people always feel compelled to make a change. We resolve to improve ourselves by getting into better physical shape, being more verbal about our feelings, or being more committed to success in some aspect of our lives. While striving for self-improvement is definitely a good thing, change can be daunting and will often keep us from achieving our goals. And yet, changes can also feel so effortless when they are made for someone you love. All of the couples featured in this edition of North Carolina Bridal Magazine were living their own lives, walking their individual paths, when love swept in and made everything different and new. When two lives come together, there must always be room for compromise. Whether it’s figuring out whose place you will live in, how to get your cat to like his dog, or can you really live with that hideous chair that he loves so much; no relationship can stand the test of time without both parties being open to change. Even though taking these steps out of your comfort zone can be nerve-wracking, it is so rewarding to build your own happy medium in which you both feel comfortable as a couple. Though sometimes it can be challenging, it is worth it to begin building a future with the person you love and to discover that you are both truly better together than you were apart. And after all, what kind of adventure could you be on if you never moved forward into the unknown? You are in this together now! As a couple, you can rely on each other for sympathy and support as you face any challenge that life throws your way. Strengthened by the constancy of your love, you will be able to set new goals for yourself that you wouldn’t have even considered on your own. The ability to work as a team will give you the confidence to become the best possible version of yourself. What a romantic way to improve yourself for 2024!

Cassidy & Eric MAY 20, 2023 We turned our wedding into a full weekend at Brown Mountain Beach Resort. On Thursday evening, we had a cook-out with our close family, explored the venue and its onsite farm, and later enjoyed the evening on the beach. Friday brought excitement and adventure. The groom's family went on a UTV expedition through Linville Gorge, while the bride's loved ones enjoyed fishing, paddleboarding, river floating on Wilson Creek, and wood fired pizzas. In the evening, we hosted our rehearsal dinner along the beach, featuring a low-country boil, followed by a bonfire. Saturday was the big day! The groom's party hiked to Harper Creek Falls, while the bridal party spent the morning making friendship bracelets, relaxing with onsite catering from Brown Mountain Beach Resort, and getting glammed up. We exchanged vows on the beach by the river, then left the ceremony in a canoe, where we had a picnic and enjoyed a light rain shower. In the evening, we danced and savored s'mores on the beach, then closed out the night with a jump in the river and a last dance to “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” After all, you only get to wear your wedding dress once, so why not! On Sunday, we hosted a farewell brunch for our guests who had stayed onsite in the cabins and yurts, while some floated down the river before heading separate ways. We enjoyed “Camp Nelson” and the time well spent with family and friends.

Hannah & Neil DECEMBER 10, 2022

Neil and I met in our tiny hometown of Rosman, NC. We are high school sweethearts, so our family and friends were beyond excited when we finally got engaged in November of 2021, after seven years of dating. I basically had everything planned before we even set a date. Almost all of our vendors were people who have been a part of our lives over the years, and it made it that much more meaningful to be able to support their businesses and have them be such a huge part of the day. The hardest part was finding a venue that had enough space for our large wedding party to get ready while still close to our hometown. Jeter Mountain Farm ended up being the absolute perfect place for that. They had a coffee bar service that we used in place of a cocktail hour, which the guests loved in the cold of December. Our wedding morning was filled with joy and laughter as we got ready with our best friends. We had a beautiful, foggy December day surrounded by the people who are most important to us. It honestly could not have been a more perfect day!

Crafting Unforgettable Experiences: BRINGING ACCESSIBLE LUXURY TO YOUR WEDDING WITH PERSONALIZED TOUCHES AND EXQUISITE DETAILS BY AUDREY C. SPANGLER As we go full steam ahead into the 2024 wedding season, couples are more eager than ever to not only orchestrate a wedding representative of their love story, but couples are also hoping to curate an unforgettable experience for their guests. Often, however, couples find these two priorities to feel at odds with one another. As an unfortunate fact, many couples view the magical details considered to be a part of luxury weddings to be ‘outside of their means.’ Pinterest board visions seem to be just that: a distant and unattainable dream. As a seasoned luxury wedding planner, I've navigated the diverse landscape of budgets, ensuring that every couple can infuse their celebration with opulence without breaking the bank. With that, allow me to offer you a few pieces of advice on transforming luxury into an achievable reality, using personalized wedding touches and a meticulous focus on essential details that will leave your guests awestruck.

Ultimately for a successful wedding day, and just as you will find in your marriage, collaboration is key. There is invaluable significance in partnering with vendors who understand your vision and can work within your budget constraints. Taking the time to research and interview multiple vendors will allow you to find the perfect match for both your budget and vision. From florists to caterers, a cohesive team dedicated to realizing your dreams ensures that every aspect of your wedding exudes the essence of luxury and is representative of you two as a couple.

Start by understanding that luxury isn't synonymous with extravagance; it's about curated refinement. When considering your wedding design and vision, begin with a thorough exploration of your love story and shared interests. Weaving these two elements into the fabric of your wedding theme will create a wedding style as unique as your love. Personalized details, from bespoke invitations to custom decor, breathe life into your celebration, making it uniquely yours. I have found that user-friendly online design platforms such as Canva and Adobe Illustrator have made it easier than ever to personalize graphic elements for your big day- whether that be save-thedates, seating place cards, or bar menus. One key piece of advice that I give to my clients is to create a simple couple's monogram that can be integrated into each piece of stationary, making the stationary design substantially more cohesive and customized.

Happy Planning & Lots of Love, Audrey C. Spangler Owner & Lead Coordinator EVER Events & Design Co.

Next, elevate your guest experience by focusing on the little things. Luxurious doesn't have to mean grandiose; it can be found in the subtleties. Consider tailored welcome gifts, thoughtfully designed seating arrangements, and exquisite table settings that reflect your style. These tailored elements can easily be crafted and printed at home. Each of these nuanced elements will collectively create an ambiance of sophistication and charm.

Remember, the magic is in the details, and by infusing your wedding with personalization and meticulous planning, you'll create an unforgettable experience that resonates with both you and your guests. So, let the journey to accessible luxury begin, where every detail tells your unique love story.

Anne & Andrew NOVEMBER 5, 2022

The theme was a very classic and sophisticated wedding, yet current and modern. The girls were dressed in champagne silk dresses with Nicola Bathie floral earrings and the guys were in tuxes with brackish bow ties to bring together the coastal southern feel. The ceremony consisted of white orchids and roses galore that took place under a tent overlooking the shore of Figure 8 Island. Huge oversized chandeliers made a big statement against the clear top tent so you could see the gorgeous blue skies. Champagne was served as the guests took their seats. The ceremony music was a string trio, but all current music to bring the theme of classic/current together. As we recessed down the aisle, white rose petals were thrown. A cocktail hour by the pool focused on a more casual vibe before we went into a formal dinner. Dinner focused on what the yacht club is known for: tons of seafood (crab, lobster, oysters, etc). A jazz trio played tunes throughout dinner until the band led the party back out to the tent to begin the reception. We wanted the first dance to feel special and romantic, so we chose “I Get to Love You” by Rouele and took dance lessons with First Dance Charlotte to ensure we felt our best. The party consisted of many oldies and classics but mixed in with plenty of current hits. The large flower arch that had been at the end of the aisle became an arch over a five-tier cake and created a romantic garden area to the side of the tent for people to sit down and relax. One important feature to Andrew was to have a beer donkey. It was a cute photo opp that brought together our love of animals and Andrew’s love of beer. We exited through the garden pathway into an antique Rolls Royce.

Kristina & Hayden OCTOBER 29, 2023

Our story is one where we truly believe it was meant to be. We have loved each other since we were 16. We were high school sweethearts. We became best friends immediately after meeting each other. We talked day and night. We never had any intent on dating and we were never interested in each other so we thought. One day we kissed and immediately that spark was there. We both felt it. We both knew it. Our relationship began that day. We ended up going our separate ways due to different plans after graduation. We kept in touch over the years. One day something changed and we decided to go out and get a drink and just like that.....here we are today. We never stopped loving each other, we kept those special things that made us think of each other. We held on to our memories. Our first kiss 11 years later felt exactly the same as the first time, that instant spark. I knew he was the man I wanted in my life. I knew it at 16 and I know it now. I didn't understand it at 16 but I know it was real. He is the love of my life. We are living the life we love and share together with our two beautiful children. Hayden proposed to me at Mills River Valley Overlook on Mt. Pisgah as a storm was rolling in. He hugged me and when he let go of me he had a ring in his hand and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said Yes!!! Then it started raining. It was like something out of a movie. 3 months later we became Mr. & Mrs. Bradley, but it was only possible with the help of my vendors who are also some truly amazing and talented friends of mine! I owe them everything for our beautiful wedding at Taylor Ranch! Katee Biggs with Salon Elle has been my stylist for many years now and is one of my closest friends! She went above and beyond on my wedding day! She is also the most talented stylist I have ever come across. Sheri Gaffney, the owner of Fab Flawless Hair & Makeup Artistry and Alyssa Patton, her lead makeup artist, did my makeup for my photoshoots and my wedding day! They are so talented! I go to Sheri for my facials and she is incredible at what she does! They have both become like family to me! I would recommend any bride to Fab Flawless. Ashley Oliver, the venue coordinator at Taylor Ranch, made my dream a reality and made my wedding day the most amazing day of my life! I can't thank her enough! She managed everything! Helped me make decisions, did the decorations, helped with all the stressful things of planning a wedding and gave me recommendations that I needed to have the style I wanted for our wedding day! We were blown away by how beautiful it all was! Jessi Turner the owner of Jessi's Cake Bake Shop and Jessi Food Truck is a new and growing business who is extremely talented and her desserts are the best I have ever had! I've purchased from her several times and used her for my wedding day and other events! My cake was perfect and so beautiful! I would recommend her for any event! For flowers, we used Lings and purchased artificial flowers; I used Amazon and Etsy for all my decorations! Tracy Reid with Tracy Waldrop Photography is a phenomenal photographer! She has been our photographer for years and there is no one else I would have wanted on my wedding day! My dress was purchased at Candler Budget Bridal and it was tailored into my dream dress by Susan Stowell Bridal Couture Services! For the Men's apparel, we rented from Men's Warehouse. All three rings were custom made at Marthalers Jewelers, my favorite jewelry store, who made my set stunning and flawless! Every experience I've had with them has been amazing! My wedding day was simple but it was made possible by all these talented people. We can't thank them enough!

In 2019, my husband, an Air Force service member, and I, a flight attendant, crossed paths on a plane, setting the stage for our love story. We opted for a wedding in Wilmington, NC, his home state, embracing the small-town charm and historic ambiance. Our vision was a romantic, intimate, and classic celebration, encapsulating who we are as a couple. The entire affair was a monochromatic marvel, bathed in black and white hues, adorned with roses, and surrounded by the lush greenery at our venue. With meticulous attention to detail, we curated an ambiance of elegance and warmth. A saxophonist welcomed guests, setting the tone for an evening filled with crafted cocktails and delectable food that resonated with our tastes. Our focus was on creating an immersive experience, from the music to our luxury photo booth, ensuring every attendee enjoyed the celebration as much as we did. The candle-lit setting added a touch of magic, making our wedding truly unforgettable. In the heart of Wilmington, we celebrated our union in a way that not only reflected our personalities but also created enduring memories with everyone who shared in our joy.

Every little girl dreams about her wedding day. She dresses up and pretends she is married in a castle and everything is beautiful, from the dress, to the flowers, to the cake. That is exactly what our wedding was — the dream came true! Especially with the added magic of Christmas, we were doubly blessed! The Biltmore Estate was the perfect place for us to begin our life together. The decorations were phenomenal. The colors of red and green were splendidly set in just the perfect places. The sun was shining on us as we pledged our love in front of family and friends. A hot chocolate bar and fuzzy blankets created a warm and inviting atmosphere. Winter Wonderland will always be a wonderful memory for us. Celebrating our wedding and Christmas at the same time made the season Merry and Magical.

Navigating the Wedding Maze of Budgets BY JENNIFER L. BALL, MS, MWP

Planning a wedding is a thrilling adventure, but the journey • can quickly become overwhelming without a well-thoughtout roadmap. Let’s dive into the art of wedding planning, unraveling the mysteries of budgets and decisions, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining your sanity throughout the process. Every couple is unique, and your wedding should reflect that. Consider incorporating elements that hold personal significance – be it family traditions, cultural touches, or celebrating the beauty of the area you call home. Reusing decor from the ceremony to the reception is not only ecofriendly but also budget conscious. The budget dilemma navigating the numbers… where do you even start? Setting a budget is the cornerstone of wedding planning. North Carolina, with its diverse venues and charming landscapes, provides a unique backdrop for tying the knot. Currently, the average cost of a wedding in this state is around $30,000 to $50,000. However, understanding where to allocate these funds is crucial. The best way to start thinking about your budget is to consider how soon you are trying to host the wedding. Are you able to hold off another year to save and have your dream wedding? Think about where you are having your wedding. Some cities, states and even countries cost more or less. We recommend doing a little research to see what areas may benefit your personal style and budget. Last but not least, work on that guest count. Every guest could add up $200+ to your final budget so be mindful of who you are inviting. Does your budget allow you to invite everyone you’ve ever met or connected with, or should you reconsider and host a smaller intimate affair with close family and friends?

Key Budget Components: •

34

Catering and Alcohol: Food and drink are significant aspects that leave a lasting impression. Opt for quality over quantity and explore local catering options for a personalized touch. Think about what your favorite meal is, what do you like to eat and what experiences would you like your guests to have throughout your event. Be creative when it comes to the options you deliver.

Entertainment and Decor: These elements set the tone and create the atmosphere. Allocate funds wisely to ensure a memorable experience for you and your guests. Do you want to dance the night away, or are you looking for a more chill and relaxed vibe? Neither is wrong, but throw the type of party you want to be a part of and that you want to hang out with your family and friends with for a few hours or even an entire weekend getaway.

Safety First: Don't overlook security and transportation. Ensuring the safety and comfort of your guests is paramount. Hiring professionals for these services guarantees a smooth, worry-free celebration. This is one area that couples tend to forget or think isn’t as important but we want to make sure all of your guests arrive and get home safely. Several venues are requiring security for weddings with alcohol so make sure you budget for that piece of the planning puzzle.

DIY Projects: A Cost-Effective Touch: While professionals are invaluable, incorporating some DIY projects can add a personal touch without breaking the bank. Consider crafting centerpieces, invitations, or even a homemade dessert bar. The key is balance– choose projects that align with your skill set and won't add unnecessary stress. While the DIY approach might seem tempting for budget reasons, it can quickly lead to chaos. Here's why turning to the pros is a game-changer: •

Time is Money: Wedding professionals bring expertise and efficiency to the table, saving you valuable time. From researching vendors to coordinating logistics, they handle the nitty-gritty details, allowing you to focus on the joyous moments.

Budget Optimization: Contrary to common belief, hiring professionals can often save you money in the long run. Their industry connections, negotiation skills, and knowledge of costeffective alternatives can prevent budget overruns.

Stress Reduction: Wedding planners act as your guiding compass, keeping you on track and alleviating the burden of decision-making. Their experience turns the overwhelming into the manageable, allowing you to savor the excitement.

Hiring a wedding planner is like having a fairy godparent for your big day. They bring your vision to life, ensure a smooth flow of events, and most importantly, keep stress at bay. A planner can create a comprehensive budget overview tailored to your vision, preventing unexpected financial surprises.

Navigating the intricacies of wedding planning is an art that requires a delicate balance of budgeting, decision-making, and personalization. While professionals can be your guiding stars, incorporating DIY projects and staying true to your unique story ensures a wedding day that is not only memorable but authentically yours. Mimi & Alec SEPTEMBER 30, 2023

Alec and I met at North Carolina State University in 2015. Almost eight years later, he proposed on campus. Our wedding day was everything we could have hoped for and more. The weather was perfect for taking group photos at the WRAL Azalea Gardens and private couple’s shots at NC State’s belltower. Our ceremony was held at the church we attend, Providence Baptist Church. The pastor and musicians made it a peaceful and meaningful ceremony. Following the ceremony, our reception took place at an Embassy Suites hotel near the church. Between the amazing DJ and delicious dessert bar, everyone was having a great time. The highlight of the night happened at 9:00 PM. Growing up, Alec played hockey, and his favorite team is the Carolina Hurricanes. When we started dating, Alec and I would go to Hurricanes games together and I became a “Caniac” as well. Some of our favorite moments together have been at PNC Arena watching the Canes play. After our engagement, we had jerseys made at the team store with our last name and numbers “20” and “23” to commemorate the year we got married. Knowing how much we loved the Hurricanes and that we had special jerseys made, Alec’s mom arranged for Stormy, the team’s mascot, to make a surprise appearance during the reception! We were shocked and thrilled that Stormy was able to come. Thank you to all our friends, family, and vendors that helped make our wedding day something we will treasure.

Sydney & Hayden MARCH 18, 2023 Hayden and I met unconventionally through TikTok, where I showed up on his For You Page. He was located in Texas and I was in North Carolina. We spoke everyday for months on Facetime, and he visited a few times. He decided to take the leap and move to North Carolina for me. We met and were married in just a little over a year. Our unconventional love story translated a little bit into our wedding because we just wanted to have a big fun party. I am a wedding dress model and have participated in so many beautiful styled shoots. I also own my own online bridal boutique that specializes in trendy elopement and reception dresses. I knew that I wanted our wedding to be a bit edgy, colorful, and most of all, fun. We were also very much a DIY budget-friendly couple. We settled on a bohemian ethnic style that was a nod to my Indian and Portuguese heritage on my mom's side, with the primary colors being peacock blue and an orchid pink with gold accents. My dress had a peacock feather train so we used peacock feathers in the bouquets and on the guest tables. Hayden and I have a lot in common, including the fact that we are both musicians. We decided to have my former band mates come and perform live for our guests and we would sing and play guitar with them. When the band was playing, I switched outfits into a short white party dress with a pink ombre veil and bright pink rhinestone shoes. Overall, our wedding day turned out to be amazing, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

NC Wedding Story Writer Creates Wedding Books for Dancing with the Stars Couple BY MEG HALE BRUNTON In the ever-evolving world of wedding vendors, founder and creative director of Wedding Story Writer Michelle McMurray de Luces has managed the nearimpossible feat of creating a niche business that is almost entirely untapped. Wedding Story Writer creates completely unique books commemorating the entirety of your special day, as well as the one-of-a-kind love story that brought you to that date. When she was three, Michelle’s mother showed her the dress from her own wedding and after that, Michelle was hooked. “It’s probably my first memory: I remember her pulling the dress out and I fell in love with it,” she recalls. “I fell in love with weddings after that. I became obsessed, kind of.” Michelle goes on to say that her mother made her a mini bridal gown that she wore every Halloween (as well as most afternoons after school) for the next few years. Growing up, she designed wedding gowns in her sketchbooks and even planned a wedding for a school project. It only made sense for Michelle to, one day, go into the wedding industry. In 2011, Michelle created Wedding Story Writer out of her home in Cary, North Carolina. She had formed the company, in the first place, as part of a final project for a class while earning her Master’s degree in Operation Management. After making wedding story books for her brother and his wife for their wedding day, then another one for her mother when she got remarried, Michelle decided to start creating the books professionally. “I wish I would have written my love story, but I didn’t and now, I don’t remember a lot of it,” she admits. “It blows my mind; on the most important day of your life, no one remembers anything.” Wedding Story Writer offers craft custom wedding story books, vow books, invitation folios, toasting booklets for the best man and maid of honor, and the officiant’s book, as well as craft keepsake boxes for the books. When designing their books, the couples get to choose from a captivating collection of colors, fabrics and customization options, styling their books to symbolize their enduring love. The vow books are also designed to be used again, handed down to future generations so that they have the chance to cherish the same sentiments as their relatives. “Ours are designed to be heirlooms; so they’re reusable,” she says of her vow books. “They get passed along in the family- that’s my hope, at least.” PHOTO CREDIT: REBECCA YALE PHOTOGRAPHY

When beginning her creative process, Michelle meets with the couple to begin learning the details of how they met, dated, and fell in love. Michelle also offers research into the couples’ genealogy, as well as custom illustrations by professional artists. From there, she interviews friends and family members of the bride and groom, gathering stories for the book. Often, she will even attend bridal showers and bachelorette parties for content. On the day of the wedding, Michelle remains with the couple all day, using multiple recording devices to capture all the sights, sounds, smells, and other senses of the wedding itself. “I really get the scoop. They really get a true wedding story,” she says of her clients. Once the wedding is over, Michelle points out that there are very few wedding details that the couple take with them into their new lives together. She hopes that her pieces will remain with them forever.

An international success and leader in the luxury wedding vow book market, Wedding Story Writer has now been patronized by celebrity couples as well. Last year, the business designed and created custom vow books, toast books, and other items for the wedding of Dancing with the Stars couple Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert. On a tight deadline, Michelle and her husband even flew out to California to personally deliver their creations to the couple at their home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. “They opened all of their items right there at the kitchen counter. They were super nice and happy,” she says of her meeting with the couple, acknowledging that people don’t always realize the hard work, time, and craftsmanship that goes into every piece she creates. “We don’t send anything out unless it’s perfect.” Today, Michelle travels worldwide, memorializing the once-in-alifetime romance of each of her clients for all eternity with her handcrafted books. Her favorite aspects of her job are getting to be creative, and hearing the stories of the couples she works with. “I think it helps people to strengthen that bond. It makes them remember why they’re getting married. It’s very sweet when I start seeing that look of love in their eyes,” she says, of listening to them tell their love story. “I love making the actual item they’re going to have with them on their wedding day. It’s like I’m with them in spirit.” For more information on Wedding Story Writer, check out their website: weddingstorywriter.com

Amber & Ethan OCTOBER 14, 2023

Our love story began by chance 8 years ago in Wilmington, NC when we found the best kind of love at the most unexpected time. We found a best friend in each other and our bond still deepens with every day. Our wedding was at The Rumbling Bald resort in Lake Lure, NC on October 14th 2023. We found the perfect venue and had the perfect day to celebrate the love of a lifetime. Everything came together so nicely. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day with the leaves changing, comfortable weather, and a gorgeous lake and mountain view. We chose wedding colors like terracotta, cream, and dusty blue to compliment the fall view. Rumbling Bald staff were very accommodating and we’re so thankful for “Precious Times”, our wedding planner, to help the day be just what we were wanting. We wanted a day filled with love, family, food, dancing, and memories. The day was everything we wanted and more! We still have people months later coming up to us and telling us that our wedding was the best they’ve ever been to. It was a wedding everyone will remember, and thanks to Xylvia at Diamond Edge Photography, we have amazing pictures to look back on.

Robia & Mark MAY 6, 2023

It was an absolutely perfect day! Despite calling for rain for 2 weeks leading up to the wedding, there was not a cloud in the sky. Surrounded by about 150 of our closest friends and family, Mark and I got married in the mountains surrounding Asheville. Blending both of our families in the town that we have newly called “home.” Our wedding party consisted of all our siblings and one of my closest friends, since we are both one of 5. Family is most important to us so it was crucial to have them stand beside us. Every detail in the wedding was thought through. Both of my parents walked me down the aisle because it's what I had always wanted. Our signature cocktails were each of our parents’ favorite drinks, named after them. The main color/ theme was lavender because it's my favorite color. And to add a little caffeine kick for our late-night celebration, we had a coffee cart that served drinks aligned with the theme of the wedding. Which, of course, stayed on theme and included lavender simple syrup. Celebrating our love with everyone we love was a dream come true. Beyond lucky to have Mark by my side for the rest of my life!

But why has eloping become day that truly reflects their values and desires. It can be a so popular? Let's explore some of the reasons behind this liberating choice for couples who want to celebrate their growing trend. love in a way that feels authentic and true to themselves. Firstly, eloping offers couples a sense of freedom and flexibility. Traditional weddings often come with a long list of expectations, traditions, and obligations. From the guest list to the venue, the decorations to the catering, planning a traditional wedding can be overwhelming and stressful. Eloping allows couples to escape the pressure and focus solely on their love and commitment to each other. Sarah & Joshua JUNE 1, 2023

June 01, 2023 was hands down the best day of our lives. Joshua and I planned every detail of the wedding down to the individual drawings and colors in our custom invitation suite. Our wedding was an intimate Southern experience, surrounded by 65 of our closest friends and family. Guests travel from as far away as Washington State and Long Island, NY to celebrate with us. We had our ceremony at The Little Chapel, a gorgeous family-owned venue. The history, significance, and attention to detail of the chapel can be seen in our photos. It is a truly magical place. Surrounding the chapel are the most beautiful grounds offering a variety of scenic backgrounds. We chose to take our first look photos in “The Grove” which offers a majestic forest setting. Following the ceremony, we had our reception at Spring House Restaurant, a beautiful estate in downtown WinstonSalem. Live music filled the air as guests were served fine Southern cuisine and a curated wine offering. One of the most special moments of the evening was looking around the dining room and seeing all of our guests not only having a great time, but having a great time with one another. To think that we orchestrated a room full of our favorite people, some of them only having met just hours ago, and they were all enjoying each other’s company–that moment brought us true joy. We received so many compliments on the vibe of our reception–that it was an intimate, upscale house party. The venue and size of our wedding were a perfect match. To this day, we still have guests praise our food selection as the best they’ve ever had at a wedding!

Samantha & James OCTOBER 28, 2023

James and I can only describe our wedding day as absolutely magical! Our wedding was held at The Pond at Laurel Cove in Old Fort, NC at the end of October. We got married in the thick of fall foliage with temperatures in the 70s and sunshine peeking through the clouds- I think it’s safe to say it was a perfect fall day! We felt so blessed to be surrounded by all of our loved ones as we said our vows overlooking the water. The setting of the venue was romantic and secluded so it gave our day a warm and quaint feel. All of our vendors worked tirelessly to make this day our dream, and they all knocked it out of the park. Sarah Siak Photography and Blue Ridge Film Productions were able to capture our day perfectly! We are so grateful for a day we will never forget, sharing our love with those who mean the most to us. I don’t think there is any better place to get married than in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

Old, New, Borrowed & Blue A FEW NEW IDEAS ON AN AGE-OLD TRADITION BY MEG HALE BRUNTON Maybe we don’t believe in all the old superstitions associated with weddings… but who wants to take the chance, right? So, play it safe- Brides, don’t let your groom see you before the ceremony. Never wear black to a wedding. And always include the four pre-prescribed bridal accoutrements on your special day. Here are a few new takes on something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue: 1.

Old - A family heirloom is the go-to for this tradition, but what if you don’t have a lot of great hand-me-downs in your family? What about a car? No, not like your uncle’s old beat-up truck. What about renting a fancy vintage car for the day of your wedding to take you to and from the ceremony? Another idea is to make a patch with a photo printed on it of a loved one who’s passed on and sew that into the lining of your gown. Instead of some knick-knack from the family member, you actually have a picture of them to keep with you.

2. New - How about new perfume? Often, women overlook perfume since it isn’t clothing, but one does wear it. And what could be more personal? It is literally sprayed on your skin and will be surrounding you all day long. You’ll probably be trying out some new makeup in preparation for your big bridal reveal as you walk down the aisle. It’s a perfect time to find your own signature scent, or change to a new scent that represents you as a married woman. Or, you could do something clever with your initials. They’re new, right? Maybe order some cute panties with your new initials on them, or sew them into the fabric of your dress. You could even have them painted on your toenails! 3. Borrowed - If you and your fiance enjoy cooking, I love the idea of asking all of your wedding guests to bring a favorite recipe with them for you to ‘borrow’ in your new lives together. These can be collected into a recipe book that will forever remind you of both your friends and of your wedding. You could also ask your best friend, or closest relative, to surprise you with something on the day of your wedding that symbolizes the special bond you share. This is a nice way to remember that you’re still connected to them, even after you’ve become someone’s spouse. 4. Blue - Everyone does a garter. Why not a whole lingerie set in your favorite shade of blue? Underwear is crucial to keeping everything looking perfect and in-place beneath the gown. Don’t throw on your old bra and panties on the day of the wedding, expecting everything to work with the neckline and to not show through the fabric. The underwear should get nearly as much forethought as the dress itself. Keep in mind that it is responsible for keeping you feeling comfortable, beautiful, and sexy on the day of the wedding.

Autumn &Justin AUGUST 20, 2023

Justin and I met 15 years ago on Sesame Street in Rock Hill, SC. We moved in together within two weeks, were married, and had a baby within one year. Justin and I were planning our 15 year vow renewal for October 2023, when we were given the news of me having Stage 3 Endometrial Cancer. At that moment everything stopped for us and the renewal was put on the back burner. One day I came across Wish Upon a Wedding. They offer weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illnesses. I reached out, and after our interview, we were granted our wish. Charming the Carolinas Event Planning reached out to me and got my ideas. I didn’t know what anything would look like until I showed up the day of the renewal. It was all a surprise. They would reach out for clarification, but their vision was my surprise. They found vendors who volunteered their time to put everything together. The attention to detail was everything I could have hoped for. Our vow renewal took place at YMCA Pretty Place in Cleveland, SC at 2 pm on August 20, 2023. The backdrop was breathtaking and the weather was perfect. Pretty Place is a beautiful venue. You don’t need many decorations–the view alone is the décor. We had our two daughters and my niece as bridesmaids, my nephew as ring security, and even a Ring Guy who was a hit with the guests. Our written vows were exchanged and reaffirmed in front of our closest friends and family. As we finished our ceremony the clouds came in and we were able to get some great photos on the rocks of the mountain. After photos we were whisked away in a 1947 Cadillac to The Barn at Tall Oaks for our reception. The venue was amazing. We even had white squirrels that joined in for the celebration. The owner of The Barn was our tour guide as we drove around on their golf cart for our photos. Inside, the barn was beautiful. Everything–the flowers, vases, food, and cake–was perfect. Everyone involved went above and beyond for us and our special day. Once everyone was gone, Justin and I had a private dance before departing to start our journey of many more years to come.

Katie & Benjamin MAY 24, 2023

Our wedding day was a fairytale come to life! When I began planning, I quickly became overwhelmed. Luckily, once we found our venue, everything fell into place. I came across Nantahala Wedding and Events online and immediately knew I’d found our venue! I reached out, and Jody gave me everything I needed to get started, including a thoughtful list of preferred vendors. Using her list, I found Avail Weddings. After one conversation, we knew Ashley would make our wedding everything we were imagining! She and her team took care of all our needs and brought our vision to life, all within our budget. We chose Wildwood Media for our photos and video, and the results are jaw-dropping! Our flowers were handled by Rachel, owner of Sun Dragon Florals. The flowers were beautiful, and Rachel was so detailed and helpful. She even helped when the groom realized he forgot his tie! Caterer Tracey Passmore saved the day after our original caterer had to cancel. She catered the rehearsal dinner, reception, and a day-after brunch, all of which was amazing, and she is the sweetest! DJ Steven with Sound Extreme Entertainment made all my dreams come true musically. He let me sing at the top of my lungs, even after I accidently threw his mic on the ground. He played every request and had a great variety of music that kept the party going all night long! I enjoyed 4 straight hours of dancing to his work, and we didn’t leave the dance floor all night. It was the most fun we’ve ever had, and a memory we’ll cherish for the rest of our lives! We’re bursting with gratitude for the vendors who made it happen and for our family and friends who traveled to be there with us: We love you all! Our wedding was truly a dream come true!

The First Steps:

8 Post-Engagement Activities to Start Your Wedding Planning! BY REBEKAH MCCUBINS So you just got engaged. Now what? Here are 8 first steps to help you get started on planning your big day! 1: Announce Your Engagement You’re engaged! Spend a little time enjoying just being engaged. And most importantly, tell your loved ones! Be sure to call your closest family and friends to tell them personally before announcing on social media or sending out engagement announcements.

2: Look at the Big Picture Formulate a broad idea of what you and your partner want in a wedding. Do you want a big party, or a small gathering of only your closest loved ones? Are you interested in eloping? Do you want an indoor or outdoor ceremony? Destination or local? Have a conversation to talk through these big-picture questions before you do anything else. You don’t have to have all the answers right now, but you should at least have an idea of what you want!

3: Get Inspired Have some fun with the wedding planning process! Before you dig into the details, find some inspiration. Look online and in bridal magazines. Create a Pinterest board! Just figure out what you like, and what you don’t.

4: Choose Your Budget Do you know how much you can afford to spend on your wedding? Spend some time figuring out what you’re willing to invest in your big day, and write that number down! This will inform your choices as you get into the details of planning.

5: Hire a Wedding Planner (if your budget allows) A wedding planner is a real life-saver! They’ll take the stress out of planning so you can focus on the joy of the

68

North Carolina Bridal Magazine Winter-Spring 2024

occasion. Your wedding planner will also ensure that you get your dream wedding without going over your budget! If you choose not to hire a planner, consider designating a trusted friend to sit in on your planning sessions and serve as your day-of coordinator.

6: Choose Your Date Picking the right wedding date is important. It will be a day that you celebrate for the rest of your lives. Consider any other big life events that may happen during your wedding year. Will you be finishing a degree at the end of May? That may mean you don’t want to choose the first week of June. Are the holidays an especially busy or stressful time for you? Keep that in mind while picking the date. Consider the weather. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony here in North Carolina, you may want to avoid the height of summer!

7: Choose Your Venue Your venue will set the vibe for your wedding! Take your time on this step. Research online and read lots of reviews. Schedule tours of the venues that stand out to you. Ask a lot of questions. Do they allow you to choose your own vendors, or are they all-inclusive? Will they allow outside catering or alcohol? How late will they allow you to stay? How early can you set up? What amenities do they provide? Do they have any discounts that may apply to you?

8: Choose Your Wedding Party The wedding party is a special part of your big day. They’ll be by your side through the rehearsal, bachelorette/ bachelor celebrations, as you get ready on your wedding day, as you say your vows, and as you celebrate at your reception. So choose the people you love most!

Rhianna & Johnny NOVEMBER 2, 2023 It was very important that our wedding day was a celebration of our love, no unnecessary thrills, and resonated with our character. For those reasons, we chose the simplistic barn and beautiful mountain drop of The Fields of Blackberry Cove. When asking my husband what he wanted out of a venue, he only noted, "views." Johnny and I funded our wedding ourselves, with a relatively low budget. I didn't think views were on the table for us. However, when Doug, the venue owner, showed us around, we were eager to book immediately. After choosing our venue, we knew we had to secure a planner we could trust. I’ve worked with Sierra from Plain With Sprinkles in the past. As a bride with a vision and likely control issues, I knew there were very few people I could put in charge of my Big Day. Sierra was an incredible resource for ideas, and proved trustworthy with managing the flow and pressures of wedding day. If I had to describe the Plain With Sprinkles company in two words, it would be love and integrity. We had an intimate wedding, which really means we didn't invite people we didn't really want to. Next we hired Kipper Shauer with Remix Weddings as our DJ. Just like Sierra, I’ve worked with Kipper in the past, danced while he DJ'ed, and watched how he can direct a crowd. His taste in music and ability to have fun while being uber professional is unmatched. I had one special request for him… My husband's favorite WWE wrestler is John Cena. "Could you switch from my ceremony track to John Cena's intro song right as I hit the aisle?" He enthusiastically said yes, and executed it perfectly. Everyone was surprised, laughed loudly, and it took the pressure away. Because of Sierra and Kipper, our day went seamlessly. As a bride who works in the event industry, it was important that I hire vendors that let me take a huge step back. Sierra flawlessly handled the flow of the wedding, decorated the tablescapes, wrangled the wedding party, and packed up our belongings. After stuffing our faces with Blackberry Cove's delicious blackberry meatballs, mac 'n cheese, and rotisserie chicken, my husband and I danced the night away to DJ Kipper! Our last song being, "All The Small Things."

Miranda & Marty MAY 13, 2023

We moved to Asheville from Ohio in the winter of 2022. It only seemed right to have our wedding take place in our new state. We almost eloped, but decided to have a small, intimate wedding with about sixty guests instead. Looking back, we definitely made the right decision. The Pond at Laurel Cove could not have been a more perfect venue. The beautiful farmhouse overlooking the idyllic pond, surrounded by nature, was exactly what we envisioned. All of our vendors went above and beyond to make our day special. We could not have done it without all their help. They brought all of our ideas to life. Our day played out better than anticipated. We had a short, but very heartfelt ceremony, surrounded by our families and closest friends. Later, our favorite ice cream shop was on site, scooping and serving up dessert. We also had a cigar bar, which was a huge hit with our guests. Our After The Tone guestbook was the icing on the cake. The recordings we received are very special messages from our favorite people that we will hold onto forever. The rest of the night consisted of dancing, laughing, talking and being with our most loved people. It was a culmination of months and months of preparation and planning. All of the hard work paid off in a way that is beyond words. We will never forget this day. It will forever be one of the best days of our lives.

Ashley & Kevin AUGUST 1, 2023

Our dreamy tropical-mountain wedding was the perfect representation of who we are as a couple. We learned early on that we are completely opposite, yet somehow perfect together. Kevin is calm, steady, and easygoing, while I am energetic, ambitious, and talkative. Because we love traveling to warmer destinations, for our wedding vision, we wanted to bring tropical paradise home to the mountains in a uniquely personal way. One of my favorite childhood memories is cutting dahlias from rows of bold colorful plants on my grandparents’ farm every summer. We lost my grandfather the year before our wedding, so the idea of growing our dahlias on his farm felt like the perfect way to have him “with” us to celebrate the joining of our families. When the wedding day arrived in August, the dahlias were cut and beautifully blended with an array of bright pink tropical blooms. We enjoyed a peaceful morning at Running Cedar Springs before an intimate ceremony with our favorite people. We danced, laughed, and soaked up every moment of what we can only describe as the best day ever! Our honeymoon cruise departed from Vancouver and included various Hawaiian islands before our extended stay in Honolulu. We are thankful for every vendor and friend who made the day unforgettable. The venue exceeded our expectations, and Kristi truly brought our floral vision to life. Most notably, our planner Teresa was the glue that held everything together! She carefully studied and contributed to every detail, and I am forever grateful for her friendship.
